Ancient Ruins
Nestled in the picturesque region of Laconia, the Archaeological Site of Mystras is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that transports visitors back to the Byzantine era. This remarkable destination boasts an array of well-preserved ruins, including stunning churches adorned with centuries-old frescoes and remnants of palatial structures. As you wander through its cobblestone streets, you'll encounter a small museum showcasing artifacts like pottery, coins, and jewelry from this historical site.
The archeological site is made up of 2 sections; an upper and a lower. If you have a vehicle drive up to the very top car park and do the upper section first. You’ll need to be fit as it’s a steep 800m climb but it’s well worth the stupendous views! We started out at 8am to beat the heat and the groups. After finishing the top section we drove to the lower car park and walked that section. It’s quite steep as well and you’ll do lots of steps. It’s well worth it and highly recommended.

What a gem.
A walk through a medieval historic castle -settlement with ancient churches and glorious views of the Spartan valley.
A challenging walk ,at some spots through steep stone paths.
At normal pace it takes 1 h 50 minutes (including stops to admire the different churches and the small museum) to reach the mountaintop acropolis.
The fully renovated palace was closed due to final touches and is opening officially April 2026.
Very helpful and knowledgeable staff .
Tip :You can drive up to the second entrance ,which is closer to the mountain top and then drive back to enter via the main entrance to see the museum and the larger monuments and areas.

It would be a nice place to see if it were taken care of better. It’s like actual ruins. No signs of making it place.. lots of grass. Looks like still abandon place. The entrance fee of €20 seems too much for it. The place had its glory times and the history behind is fascinating, however, nowadays it’s just a place for making money and not restoring such a nice place. Such a shame.
The views from the top are just stunning. It’s quite a walk uphill but it definitely worth it.
Worth visiting. Great views, nice walks and a donkey with his dog pal are some of the few things you might encounter. Of course the odd old geezer who can’t gather the energy to climb up but that’s life. Bring a bit of water. Quite a climb in the burning heat! We didn’t even pay entree. Not sure if that was supposed to be like this?
Beyond awesome! A huge open air museum of a Byzantine town with loads of intact churches, a ruined castle and lots of other ruins. Lots of walking uphill and down dale so you need to be reasonably fit and wear good shoes. You need all day!!!!
One of the most impressive and intriguing archeological sites in the Peloponnese from the historical and christianity point of view! There are 2 gates one at the lower part and one at the upper end! You can park the car down and go up the hill and then descend on another path. You need at least 2 hours to really enjoy the place. In the evening is less crowded. The staff is wellcoming and helpful!
Beautiful churches and ruins of the original town. Not all the churches are open though. The town is against a hill and people with difficulty walking will not be able to manage all the stairs.
Wonderful place, you can walk around here for hours and feel the energy of past times

Acropolis & Fortification Castle of Mystras is a must-visit in the region of Messenia, offering a fantastic historical and cultural experience. The site features ancient ruins, including medieval castles, churches with faded yet remarkable iconography, and the Mycenaean Palace of King Nestor. Visitors can explore the vast area on foot, navigating steep hills and stone pathways. It's important to wear comfortable shoes and bring water for the journey.
Impressive and extensive ruins. For the best experience follow the yellow Taygetus Trail (yellow) markers from the northern edge of Mystras which in around 45 minutes of following a pitched stone path will bring you to the Fortress Entrance near the top of site. From here you enter the site and have a further 15 minutes ascent to the castle. You can then spend several hours gradually descending to the main entrance via various semi- ruined churches, monasteries and civic buildings.

Hate saying this but have to .
If you’re short on time to visit historic and ancient sites SKIP this and see other sites.
If you’re unable to walk steep inclines out of shape or not sure footed over rough paths it will take a very long time and the scant reward is not worth it.
This old city was built on the side of a very steep hill , paths are rubble strewn footing is poor worse , on at time a steep slope.
The old tumbled walls and rubble and empty buildings with one old intact working church and simply NOT worth a few hours.
I have no issues with the paths but many will, I did it bottom to top and back it took quite some time.
Alternatively take a look from the bottom and just hit the museum .

If you're looking for breathtaking views - visit this place. It has a great blend of historical buildings and nature. You will do hiking at this location in order to walk around ancient ruins once you enter. Make sure to have the right footwear, hats/caps, water and fully charged phone for photography :) Entrance fee is 20 euro per person.
This is an amazing place however it is really hard work The pants are very uneven very rocky so if you're unsteady on your feet you definitely need to have walking sticks. It is also a lot of up and down walking so very tiring how did you split into two sections which you can walk to but the car is very handy to go to the upper castle section which to be honest does not offer as much as the lower sections.
It Still seems to be I work in progress and it's more like goes village than in the well intact Byzantine site.
Breathtaking views. One of the most beuatiful places I ever visited, no joke. We’ve been up there all alone! Absolutely worth the short hike.

The citadel (acropolis) was built in 1249 by Geoffrey II Villehardouin and is the only Frankish construct of the city and its surrounding walls, which were built in the course of the following 3 centuries.
The Franks wished to control the rich farming lands of the Laconian plain, and also to symbolically display their control over Sparta, a huge political statement when the history of the great city is taken into account.
Hardly a decade later, this hubris was remedied, as the Franks were devastated in the battle of Pelagonia in northern Greece, and most of the Knights were taken captive, including the prince himself. The Byzantines demanded, and acquired, this fortress along with many others, in order to release the prince.
Soon the city developed around it, a series of new enclosures were built, and the castle served as the acropolis.
The ascent may be somewhat tiring but the view and the architectural remains of the fortifications are very well worth it. All the way up there is a multitude of interesting and impressive other spots to enjoy while pausing to catch your breath. Water and hat are highly suggested in the summer.
Great views. Sensible footwear recommended. Need a good couple of hours to take it all in.

It was informative, well organized and interesting. English text was available.
Staff were nice and friendly.
The whole place was stylish and well taken care of.

Family-owned for over 5 generations, Liokareas produces award-winning extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods in the mountains of the Mani region. Cold-pressed within hours of harvest, their oils are known for purity, bold flavor, and exceptional quality. Visit their groves or shop online to experience authentic Greek olive oil at its finest.
Great museum that walks you through the history of olive growing and has model presses and mills. They had a spot of all the local oils, but no one was staffing it when we went (early October, Thursday morning) and a small gift shop.

This museum has really cool stuff: amphorae, large stirrup jars, equipment used to press oil. Plus a comprehensive story of the olive tree, the history of & culture around olive oil, and a nice gift shop. Don’t miss the outdoor display! The building is also mobility-accessible. Beautiful natural lighting and a lovely film about Greek olives round out the experience. Definitely worth the drive to Sparta.
This is an OK museum, a lot of replica so it's a bit disappointing, but it's great to learn about olive and oil.
This was a great visit to the ruins of this historical city. Well worth the visit. There is an abby halfway up. She has been there for 57 years. The best part was the gift shop where a wonderful old nun was handing out homemade sweets. She was selling handmade items that the nuns make. She was so thankful that we stopped by and made a purchase. She could not have been more thankful. Great visit, great purchase!
We drove a bit out of our way to stop here and glad we did. What a fascinating museum. A lot to learn with a nice presentation of everything. Across the street is a little shop you can sample and purchase Greek Olive Oil.

The Archaeological Site of Sparta, located north of the Leonidas statue, offers a glimpse into the ancient city's history. Of all the ruins we visited, the ones at Sparta were the least vast and impressive. We don’t regret walking through (it was free to enter when we were there, and the walk through the trees and wildflowers was lovely), but I’m not sure I would go well out of my way just for this site. They were in the process of doing restoration work when we visited, and the view over the theatre, with the olive grove, modern city, and mountains in the background was absolutely lovely.
It is to much underestimate this site, including the local administration. It is to little excavation even the place have enormous potential. I saw a beautiful amfiteatre, little like dimensions but nice conservation. In time, with attention, could be an important attraction point. I recommend to go there.
We were disappointed that there was little posted information about the history of the ancient city - nothing about its significance in Homer's Iliad, the Persian Wars, or during the Peloponnesian War. The structures that have been uncovered are OK, but only the theatre is truly noteworthy. It seems much still needs to be excavated. However, entry was free so it's hard to complain too much.

Absolutely amazing!! If you have an interest in ancient history this is an absolute must. Ignore the reviews saying there isn't much here,if you don't like or have any knowledge of ancient history go and walk around Mystras. These ruins are everything I hoped they would be. Sparta was a society built for war not for grand buildings like Pericles Athens so for there to be this much left is amazing. The new excavations at the theatre removing to the Roman one to uncover the Spartan one are spectacular, such an absolutely huge place! If they can uncover it all it will rival any ancient theatre anywhere! The view across the new city to mountains is worth it on its own. Free entry too which is unbelievable.
Was open even that say closed. Not much to see, somehow we want to be there.
Very little restored, poor description boards, most of the boards in the hot sun. I reckon it's actually a waste of time to visit this place. A history of Sparta is so interesting, but was not presented at all. What a pitty. I do not reccomend visiting this place.
The entance was free. There is no toilet inside. Bring lots of water as it is very hot, and very lttle shade near boards.

Their fillet with fig, gnocchi, and cream sauce is absolutely killer! It's a cool spot, right next to the statue of Leonidas and away from the noise of the town square.
I have eaten here many times and the food has always been delicious and generous portions. Good service, relaxing music, nearby street parking. But there is one thing I must add - soooooo clean! Lovely white linen tablecloths and toilets also very clean. Good value for money. One of my favourite restaurants in Sparta.

(I would understand that if it would be in the village in the middle of Greece, but Sparta has a many tourists coming and I think it is not that hard to translate the menu’s at least to English, not all of us speak Greek 🙂)

Marmara Restaurant is an exceptional establishment with incredibly welcoming and amiable staff. The ambiance offers breathtaking views of the valley. Their menu boasts traditional Greek dishes such as gemista and dolmadakia, which are simply scrumptious. In addition, they graciously served a complimentary dessert consisting of fresh grapes and figs. A standout dish is the lamb with potato, which is truly delectable.
Very lovely place to stop after visiting the fortress. Very friendly family that owns the place. The food was very tasty. I had grill chicken fille with fries and meatballs in vine. Very affordable prices.

Very pleasant taverna. Many vegetarian options. Feels like home cooking for you. Very nice sitting area, outside and with view over valley. Thank you! We liked everything, including summer vegetables, spinach pie, tsatsiki, eggplant salad, and Greek coffee.
Dusty place with creepy caged parrot : run !
After visiting the archeological Park, we wanted to have diner at this place but chose to leave after our drink : the place looks filthy (stains on the table sheets, dusty chairs, menus in shambles and barely readable..).
But most of all, the PARROT's presence is what convinced us to leave : the animal is going nuts in a cage so small it cannot even spread its wings and is constantly crying for attention. To the owner's own admission, the bird never gets to go out of its cage.
It feels like animal abuse and the overall vibe of the restaurant is thus pretty creepy, with prices on the menu more expensive than the average in Mystras.
People, even if you think it's cute, stop cautioning with your money this kind of practice. There are enough suffering stray animals in Greece to add the exotic caged birds to the list.
Very relaxing atmosphere. Owner was super friendly and accommodating. Be sure to buy his homemade olive oil! Is olives were some of the best we’ve ever tasted. Really enjoyed our experience on the patio overlooking the beauty of the region.
Marmara is a hidden gem with a soul
One of the most heartwarming dining experiences in all of Greece, it feels like stepping into your aunt's home, where food is made with love and authenticity. Nona and Leonidas pour their heart into every detail from the cozy ambiance and comfortable seating to the homemade dishes and their signature olive oil, which you can also purchase to take home
Every bite was a celebration from the freshly baked bread and pita to the perfectly grilled, spiced fish. We came to celebrate a birthday, and the owners surprised us with a dessert and a candle a truly touching gesture that made the evening even more special & unforgettable
If you’re anywhere nearby, do yourself a favor and visit Marmara for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They serve delicious vegetarian, fish, and meat options, plus great coffee and desserts all made with heart!

Food was okay, view was great...but when we got the bill it was almost TWICE as high as we thought. He charged everything inc the offered coffee and 'free' desert, 'free' bread etc etc...in total we paid 30 euros extra with 4 persons.

Located in a pleasant spot near the square, ΚΑΠΑΡΗ is a welcoming establishment with amiable staff and delectable cuisine. The green lettuce salad, while simple, was satisfactory. Their biftekaki stuffed with cheese from Naxos was truly delightful, and the tigania surpassed expectations. The French fries were commendable as well; they were genuine and not frozen - a rare find when dining outdoors.
Delicious, friendly and a very fair price. Huge portions in general. We were very happy with our visit!

Excellent place to dine in the evening near the neoclassical government building in the Central square of Sparta. Outside seating and indoor seating. The meat platter was humongous and more than enough for our party of nine. The house wine both red and white was delicious. They home-cooked dolmades were prepared in the classic Greek style.
Food was somehow ok but not very impressive. Menu was extensive but unfortunately some of the dishes listed in the menu were not available to order. Staff were nice and polite.
We were served fast. Menu was available in English. It was clean and organized.
Meal size was logical but it was a bit expensive for the quality of the experience we received.
Been going to kapari for about 15 years now. Was back there last night. Food is always great. Staff is great George the owner is the best the mousaka is the best I’ve ever had. Ate here twice while in Sparta. Each time the food was incredibly delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly and efficient. Would definitely eat there again when visiting Sparta.

South side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the south side side of town. Start the day off with Statue of Leonidas, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Sparti. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Historical landmark
The Statue of Leonidas, located at the top of Paleologou, pays tribute to the heroic king who led the Spartans in battle against the Persians in 480 BCE. The statue stands in front of a modern stadium and overlooks ancient landmarks such as an immense theater built into the hillside and fragments of a temple. The Spartan warriors were known for their military prowess rather than architectural achievements, but this impressive statue ensures that visitors can capture a memorable image of this legendary figure.
What fun! The statue is beautiful. It’s a little out of the way but not too far from the Tomb of Leonidas. There are plenty of shops near by and great food. Check out The History Cafe, huge portions at a great price and ice cold Sparta Beer.

Simple to access and impressive.
Parking right at the statue.
Nice cafes and restaurants nearby to check out and have a snack.
Nice statue of Leonidas. Fans of the movie 300 need to go there and take a picture. FYI - we found some pictures of a helmet, but we’re not able to find it until we asked a local, who told us, that this is located at the other side of this Main Street - running south-east. The distance is around 1.5km and the helmet is located in the middle of a traffic circle.
Interesting place, interesting piece of history. The statue is great and worthy to visit. It is in front of the football stadium so be careful not to get caught in the football match. There is a limited parking area, however right behind the corner there are plenty of space. What’s more important at the end of the driveway there is very interesting archeological site. It was opened when we were there without any fee. I fully recommend to see the statue and then walk around the that site.

Historical landmark
Located north of the city, the Tomb of Leonidas, also known as "Leonideion," is a temple-shaped building with historical significance. According to tradition and local beliefs, it is said to house the remains of the legendary king Leonidas. Although there is no concrete evidence linking the temple to King Leonidas, it has been ingrained in popular consciousness as his tomb.

Nice cafe on the square , I wouldn’t go out my way come here, it was a bit of an anti climax to my road trip around the Peloponnese! But on the other hand happy to say I’ve been here

A building of uncertain purpose that has been misinterpreted as the tomb built to host the remains of the great king, fallen gloriously in battle in Thermopylae. In truth, the building was more likely a temple.
Visit it if you feel inclined to honor the great hero as he deserves. It doesn't really matter if this is the actual site of the final resting place of his remains. He deserves it nonetheless.
If you need a spectacular, breathtaking monument to back up your visit with a great set of photos, you have not understood a thing about the Spartans, and probably never will.
The 5 stars is strictly for the historical aspect and really nothing else. The area is fenced off and if you didn't know what you were looking at, it would look like a pile of blocks... no plaque or marker explaining anything.
A very interesting ruin, called the Tomb of Leonidas but it isn't,our guide said it was probably be a temple from the 8th/7th bce. The masonry is megalithic,huge precisely cut blocks,made me wonder if it's even older. Definitely worth a walk around if you are in the city
The site has the form of a temple, probably dating back to the late 5th century BC. It was made of massive limestone blocks and was divided in two connecting chambers.
Many researchers share the opinion that it is the temple of Karneios Apollo. However, according to local tradition and the travel writer Pausanias, the remains of Leonidas were transferred and buried there. Either way, the site deserves to be preserved better and a plaque should be added explaining the historical background.
Just a couple of walls, but easy to park nearby
The tomb of King Leonidas is situated in a large square with plenty of open spaces and benches. There is a very nice Grill and Coffee house just opposite of the walking street.
Grab a delicious ice coffee and watch the tomb or take pictures.
The whole scene is very "Spartan" no information plaques or anything fancy.
All in line with the spartan culture.
Worth a visit and a quick rest or a bite to eat
We stopped in Sparta on our way to Mystras. Sadly, there really isn't much here, I couldn't find any souvenirs, we did have lunch before going on to Mystras which is definitely worth a visit! It's amazing!

A fine neoclassic building houses a quite interesting collection, paying tribute to the shipping magnate and art lover Ioannis Koumantaros, uncle of Stavros Niarchos, another shipping tycoon. On just two levels you'll enjoy the eclecticism of that collection that became part of the National Gallery of Greece.

Pretty nice building, interesting, beautiful and classic architecture. The exhibition was closed for maintenance during my visit.
It was a lovely surprise my visit to Koumantarios Gallery! The collections were amazing as they have many famous paintings. It is housed in a wonderful two storey neoclassical building in the city center. It is the first branch of the National Gallery. Definitely worth a visit!

This restaurant, Diethnes, provides a pleasant dining experience. Upon entering with my spouse, we were greeted by the owner who proceeded to describe their menu offerings. After some conversation, he suggested a lamb dish consisting of eggplant and potatoes. From the very first bite to the last, it proved to be incredibly delicious! The establishment also boasts a beautiful garden at its rear where one can enjoy the sight of citrus trees and appreciate the refreshing breeze.
Authenthic greek food, with a very nice terrace garden in the back. The owner/staff were very friendly and the highlight of this place, including the turtles!

TOURIST TRAP
Here is a restaurant trying to hold on to it's former glory that does not want to move forward.
Four of us went for a late lunch and ordered mains and salads.
After a while the salads and three mains were brought to us with the bread basket and no cutlery.
After waiting 10 minutes one of us went inside and informed them.
Finally our last meal was brought out with cutlery for one person.
Waited for 5 minutes and informed them again that we needed cutlery.
Got the cutlery and started eating a what can only be described as a very very poor meal..
Mate, let me give you the news. We are locals to Greece and know what good Greek food is. Pity yours isn't.
Just in case you forgot which I doubt it, Briam is made up of an equal percentage of vegetables, not 90% potatoes. Also is is in the lathera group of dishes because it is supposed to have a big dose of olive oil in it.
The oil was minimal and most likely mixed with some sort of vegetable oil. I know it mate because I've been eating good quality olive oil from my families groves for decades.
Shame on you for trying to stooge us.
Tourist trap.
A nice, informal place to go for a quiet lunch. You see what's available in a display case, you make your selections, and they bring it to your table. I watched two tortoises casually strolling through the garden as I ate.
This is important. I went here a few years ago on my first day in Greece. The moussaka here is the best in Greece. My wife and I traveled around Greece for two weeks and I had moussaka for every dinner, trying to find some place that compared to this restaurant. None of them do. Best moussaka in Greece.

Seems a little underrated traditional Greek restaurant. If you are fed up with souvlaki and gyros and want to taste real Greek food just get into... to taste Greek cousin sitting in the garden under some lemon trees. The owner made a plate with good selection of food, I really enjoyed every moment in this restaurant.
This is a delightful place to eat. My wife and I walked in not knowing what to expect. A man (who turned out to be the owner) started talking with us and explaining what food they had. After a little conversation, he said he would make us a lamb dish with eggplant and potatoes. All I can say is that, from first bite to last, it was delicious!
We enjoyed sitting in the beautiful garden behind the restaurant looking at the citrus trees and relishing the cool breeze. The owner served us himself and talked with us for a while.
I already told some friends about this place and they enjoyed it too. I'll only be in Sparti for a week, but I'll eat here again before we leave.
The food was amazing and they were pretty patient and nice people!

I only had a pizza, but it’s not a traditional Pizza one would expect. I am sure people are used to this pizza, but unfortunately, I am not.
The crust is an oily based sweeter bread. And the cheese is not mozzarella. It’s very salty and a heavy, rough texture.
Overall, the pizza did not have a good taste. Heavy salt is the flavor that stays with you all night.
A limited menu but they do make a pretty good pizza. Fantastic prices. They remade an order that was messed up with no complaints, which was very kind.

I found the restaurant y.k μεατ + εατ while searching for gyros, and I wasn't disappointed. The food was delicious, with generous portions. The staff was friendly and accommodating. They had a pleasant outdoor eating area located behind the restaurant near the town square. The prices were very reasonable, and they even offered an English version of the menu. Additionally, there was an adorable feline companion that added to the overall charm of the place.

Big thanks for the waitress, who served us. Apparently she was the only one who took real care of us. The food we received (sausages, cheeseburger, caesar salad and tomahawk steak) were fine, but nothing stands out from the other places offering grilled meals.
Sadly, due to the rain we were forced to sit inside, what was barely comfortable, the interior is not prepared for guests, the main focus is on the patio where there are numerous tables and seating opportunities.
I bet there are some better venues in Sparta than Meat + Eat, but to be fair, this place is not bad either.
I was looking for gyros and was not disappointed that I ended up in this restaurant. The food was great with very nice portions. The staff was friendly and helpful. There was a nice covered area for eating outside behind the restaurant next to the town square.
The price was very affordable and they had an English version of the menu.

YiaYia's (grand-mother's) kitchen is nicely situated on the big square to enjoy a late afternoon drink or some scrummy food at reasonable prices. Also the service was very friendly.The name says it all. YiaYia, which means Grandma in Greek, handed down all the family recipeswhich are proudly listed on the menu, along with some less traditional entrees. Food was absolutely delicious.
Accessable from the main square it has indoor and outdoor seating. Reccommend the Kinoa salad. Portiin sizes are not large so is excellent to sample multiple dishes the greek way.

Menelaion is a modern hotel situated outside the city, providing stylish rooms and suites. It offers complimentary breakfast and a pool area for guests to enjoy. On the hill of the Prophet Elias, one can find the Menelaion shrine, constructed in ancient times to honor King Menelaus and Helen of Troy. Although most of it now lies in ruins, it is still worth visiting for those with extra time in Sparta. There is no entrance fee to explore this historical site.
I was in Greece for a Spartan race and stayed at the Menelaion for a week. The hotel is located such that I could walk anywhere in town easily and there were numerous local restaurants and cafes.
The entrance to the hotel is on the main street and is very welcoming. The staff are also very helpful and friendly. I was amazed by the free breakfast that the hotel provided. The buffet had a huge selection of delicious food.
I would definitely stay there again.

The hotel is located in the center of Sparta, the staff is super friendly and ready to assist, the establishment is super clean with very nice comfortable rooms with great sound insulation blocking outside city noise, the breakfast buffet is luxurious and the pool is a lifesaver to cool you off during the summer heat.

Very small but very full museum. A visit is a must if you are in the city even if its to only see the world famous bust of Leonidas. Lots of items on display but not a lot of information. A new museum is being built which hopefully brings all the exhibits to life.

Good stop for a very brief visit of Greek artifacts from Sparta. We maybe spent 20-30 minutes here. Interesting plaques and informative signs for the mosaics and statues. Well worth 2€ each for the small size of the museum. We visited in early November.
A small and tidy museum. Too boring for teenagers actually. However I like it.
Be aware that the parking places around are limited and not secure becase of the local Romans. Best to leave your car in the nearest secured parking 1 minte away from the museum - i.e. Σταθμευσις Α.Ε.
Also the museum doesn't have WC be aware if you visit it after a long trip.
The Archaeological Museum of Sparta is worth a stop for its central location, pleasant grounds, and collection of interesting local artifacts that give a glimpse into the city’s ancient past. However, the museum itself feels a bit underwhelming compared to other Greek museums—it’s small, not climate-controlled, and could benefit from better upkeep. While we enjoyed the visit, the entry price seemed a little high for what is offered.
Small museum and not much to see (other than the Spartan statue) and not worth going out of your way. For me Sparta itself does not require a stop. If time is short save it. Also, for a 10 euro entrance fee to the museum, WC should be included. Nearby Mystra definitely worth half a day.
We came here after visiting the archaeological site and the statue, and since there were nowhere any restrooms we expected them here. No. Museum ladies strictly denied them and told to look around in the restaurants around. There was heavy rain outside, and we cut short our visit, quickly looking around two rooms, one with older exposition and another with newer addition about Leonidas. The collection is nice though and well structured.
While there, I heard two other groups of people asking staff about the restrooms and also being denied. This was also the only place, staff had problems understanding the disability document we provided for our kid to get a ticket. In all other tourist locations around Greece, staff immediately recognised the disability ID (coz they all issued following the same EU standard).
Would expect a better maintained museum in such historical place.
Any way, worth to go, if you're around.
Well worth a visit. First walk around the archeologiavl site of Sparta, then visit this measure trove of mosaics, busts, engravings and bronze weapons. Not big, and hour to 1.5 hrs well spent if you love history

The Acropolis of Ancient Sparta, located on the tallest of the Spartan hills, offers a fascinating journey through history. First thing: do not compare it with that other Acropolis in Athens… then you are in for a disappointment. Although in ancient times it could compete with its rival on equal footing nowadays it does not attract the same funds for archeological research when I go by on what is displayed. That said it is free to enter and at each point of interest there is an info board. There is no dedicated parking lot but just outside there is ample parking space. The toilets I saw were of porta-poti style, were all locked and with no cafes or tavernas in the vicinity that was the biggest bummer. Visit it when you are inspired by all things Spartan otherwise worth a detour when you happen to be in the vicinity
Not much left to see but a great spot to visit and enjoy the beautiful views of the mountains. There is still plenty to discover in this site. I am sure this place was beautiful when it was established. Free parking.
First things first - do your bathroom before coming to Sparta:) Coz gods forbid to see that on-site portables and even come near them if you don't want to throw up. And there are no any other restrooms nearby. Not even in the museum! Don't understand why it's so difficult to maintain a basic infrastructure at location such popular by tourists? But other than that it's a beautiful place free to walk and explore history.

Ancient Ruins
Located on the Tripoli road, just past the junction with Orthias Artemidhos, lies the ancient Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia. This site dates back to the 9th century BC and was where Spartan boys underwent rigorous tests involving flogging as part of their education. The goddess worshipped here was Orthia, associated with fertility and salvation. Visitors can explore stone remains from a temple and learn about the intense rituals that took place there.

Be aware, this place is dangerous and by the gods don't make the same mistake I did and go here alone!!
I was beset by Gypsies that started to push me and ask for money. I got away by firmly walking away and telling them again and again that I don't have any money. Eventually I raised my voice when they pushed me for the second time, They backed off a little bit and luckily an older man appeared and they disappeared... Maybe this old man was Zeus in disguise 🙏🤗
And I plead now to the local authorities, clear up this place of this rabble and restore some order🙏
You can't see much of the sanctuary and, as another recent reviewer noted, there's currently a camp of Roma nearby that tried to stop our car and make us pay money to drive away. It's not worth the stop.
It's actually a pretty cool historic site to see. As other reviewers noted there are signs of vagrants hanging around. We went very early on a weekday morning, and didn't encounter anyone. It's also not maintained anymore, which is very sad.
It's pretty easy to get inside though. It looks like it's closed, but there's a big whole in the fence on the other side of the gravel road that you can just walk through.
I gave it 4 stars because there are some pillars with ancient writing on them, that was a super cool discovery. If you've explored a lot of these historic ruins in Greece, you'll know it's very rare to see any with writing on them. I just wish I knew what they said.
So definitely be very careful when you go, but I would still recommend you do.
The gate is locked and the area is overgrown with weeds and neglected. It's down a crummy dirt road lined with garbage.

Amazing temple ruins, amphiteatre remains, the altar also survives somewhat.
The garbage around the place however should be cleaned up.
One for those with a knowledge of history to visit and imagine the scenes where the somewhat excessive and violent whipping ceremonies took place, particularly in Roman times for Roman tourists.
Imagination is vital as little remains and it is poorly looked after as it has become a site for the modern ceremonies of excessive alcohol drinking by the young, judging by the litter.

A must if you like archeology and the Iliad. Beautiful view on the Taygetus and Sparta plain. You can get up pretty far with the car but might need to leave it at some point. Maybe by the North is more accessible via car.

Rough unpaved road to the top from either direction (we took the northern one by the church), but passable (carefully, when dry). A truly fantastic view on the Taygetus and the Eurotas plain of Sparta--worth visiting for those who know what they are seeking.
The Menelaion is a fascinating site to visit, offering sweeping views over Sparta and the surrounding valley, with ruins that are easy to walk among and parking that’s conveniently close. The drive up is a bit challenging on narrow roads, and once there you won’t find any plaques or explanations, so it’s best to do a little research beforehand to fully appreciate the significance of the site. Despite those drawbacks, it’s well worth the trip for the history and the breathtaking scenery.
I don't care if it's not the original palace of Helen & Menelaus; it's a spectacular place to visit, with great views over the Spartan plain, & across to the mountains behind. Well worth the lengthy hike up from the road.

Up a steep singletrack paved roadway from north. Walk last 400 m. or continue up dirt track.
The Menelaion is not far from Sparta, but the road up is very narrow and only partially paved. We ended up parking about a half a mile away, by an old church and walking the rest of the way. It’s a bit steep here and there, but the road is fine and it’s a beautiful walk amidst olive groves. There is nothing at the site to inform the visitor, but the remains of the fortress there are clearly Mycenaean in style. The area provides a gorgeous 300 degree view with no problem, so it probably served as a stronghold, lookout or perhaps a summer retreat since the airs is nice and fresh up here. We watched two hawks in flight while we were there, so if you want to just get out on your own, this is a a lovely place. Plus great photo ops for Sparta from above and afar.
Do NOT park at the church! We just parked there to walk up to the site and in the 30 minutes we were gone, our car was broken into, and everything was stolen. They got almost nothing of value, but all of our clothes and everything we packed for the trip. This is apparently VERY common. Be cautious as this site. Thieves watch the parking lot all day long.
Definitely worth to came here. Very nice view from up there. We decided to leave our car 1km from this place and make last 1000m on foot because road was too dangerous for car. I do not know how road looks like from the north side but we arrived by car from the south side and it was almost impossible to get up there.

Charged us for an extra burger, tried to say we actually did receive the extra burger and/or received one type of burger versus another. Then gave us the bill with no total and we had to manually do the math.

To add to owner’s response: You did not ask for more time to clarify the issue. Instead, the server argued with us multiple times as to why we were wrong, rather than just removing the charge for the extra burger. As customers we should not have to argue with staff over which food we did or did not receive.

I know greek people like their burgers different than american people do, but i dont understand why every one of them has tomato on it. Great place for traditional Greek cooking and made to order grilled items. They run out of most oven made dishes by 4pm like every other restaurant, so make sure you go early if you want to partake of the special dishes. Also, for whatever reason, they have the best pastichio in Sparta. Literally next to "empty tomb" of the famous King Leonidas of ancient Sparta.
Amazing tzatziki and gyros (only €3,50!)
The staff is super helpful and ready to accomodate your needs. The food is very tasty and cheap! I definitely recommend stopping here if you want a quick meal in Sparta.

We got there after a long day. I was a bit worried due to some reviews. We ordered stuffed pita small portion with greek salad. It is so big that we barely ate half of it.
The service was great. We received mineral water without asking. Also they gave us an extra Spartan bear. The restaurant is frequently used by the local people so the taste is adapted to them.
We stopped at this wonderful spot before our long visit to Mystras. We ordered the pork skewers—so tasty and juicy—and paired them with a local Sparta beer that had a unique flavor and a cool label featuring a mask symbolizing a local mythological monster. The staff were incredibly friendly and took the time to explain the story behind it, which we really appreciated. Their warmth and hospitality made the experience even more special.
