Carlingford in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Carlingford, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Carlingford is a well-preserved medieval village on the shores of Carlingford Lough in County Louth, with views across to the Mourne Mountains. Visitors can explore historic sites such as King John’s Castle, the old Tholsel gate, and ruined abbeys tucked among narrow lanes. The surrounding Cooley Peninsula offers hiking, cycling, and water activities, along with scenic drives. Traditional pubs, seafood (including locally farmed oysters), and small independent shops give the town a lively yet compact atmosphere.
With favorites like Irish Folklore Park, Ghan House, and Carlingford Arms Pub & Restaurant, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Riina's and Carlingford Arms Pub & Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Carlingford while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Gastropub

Disco club
PJ O'Hare's Carlingford, also known as The Anchor Bar, is a legendary gastropub exuding Irish charm with its warm open fire and fascinating folklore relics. It's a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike, offering a cozy atmosphere, beer garden, and fantastic food and drink. The menu features familiar dishes alongside delightful culinary surprises like extraordinary fish tacos bursting with fresh flavors.
The oysters were amazing! Best ones I had in Ireland so far. We also had crab, prawn and Ribs. Food was delicious!
Antonia A — Google review
The food itself was tasty and service was quick, but my experience was spoiled by undercooked fish and chips. The cod came out cold inside with raw batter still clinging to it not just unappetizing, but unsafe. It completely ruined my meal. I wasn’t after a refund, just hoping the kitchen pays more attention, because no restaurant should serve fish in that condition.
Binachos — Google review
I wanted to sit by the fire and sink pints all day here. Perfect Winter boozer with the fire going and great guinness. Staff were amazing, so quick and were great with the kids. The seafood is great. Fish Tacos were average and a bit bland but the mussels were amazing. Will deffo come back and without the car.
Ronan C — Google review
Was in Carlingford at the beginning of May and this place was recommended to us. Pil Pil Prawns are out of this world and the seafood tacos are banging… Epic.
Tango M — Google review
Such good fun with the team working here Everybody was so friendly and made us feel very welcome Nice pint enjoyed in a dog friendly beer garden

Great early evening drop in. Staff do friendly. Had fish & chips and they didn't disappoint! Oh and one of the nicest espresso Martinis!
Clarissa C — Google review
What a fun, wonderful place this establishment is. Always good craic, music, and conversations. The food's top notch, the service is always spot on, and the atmosphere's second to none. Stayed at Carlingford a few days and my only complaint was that the music didn't go longer each night! Miss ya guys already.
Nerris N — Google review
What I picture when someone says “gastropub” the food was excellent. Highly recommend the carb claws and fish tacos. The Oysters are also a must in here! Staff were so friendly, great spot, great craic.

Outstanding cafe in the heart of a beautiful little seaside town. The food was great! We had the omelet and the smashed avocado egg toast with a pancake on the side. The staff is friendly even in comparison to the always friendly Irish. Great place!! Add it to your list!!

Lovely experience in this great little cafe, sitting outside in glorious sunshine. A gorgeous street, steeped in history. Cakes, tea & coffee all delicious, & gluten free Carrott cake a welcome delight. Value for money. Friendly staff. One toilet upstairs, very clean.
Angela C — Google review
Tasty food with big portions and plenty of choice on the menu Unfortunately slow enough to serve and then bring out food even though it is not busy (only thing maybe then the food is cooked fresh) Coleslaw was lovely, but could do with mixed salad rather than crisps Recommended

Had lovely food here today. Staff very friendly and quick service. Food was delicious 😋

What a lovely place the Liberty Cafe is! The staff here were so warm and friendly (much like everyone in Carlingford seemed to be during our stay) and the food and coffee were great. A great place to have a sit and watch the world go by. Margo had quiche- great value, the portion was massive, and delicious.

The decor is an eclectic mix of vintage china, lace tablecloths, and quirky wall hangings, creating a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere. It's not just about the afternoon tea; they also offer delectable handmade sandwiches and cream tea. Visitors rave about the quaint ambiance, friendly staff, and delicious cake and tea selections.
Love this colourful, quirky, airy, bright spot with an ocean view and a dog friendly area. The toasties are very satisfying, and the cakes are incredibly delicious with a variety to choose from such as pavalova, strawberry gateau, lemon drizzle etc.. Staff are welcoming and chatty, with good customer service. The only 'down' side is it's cash only. Have always had a pleasant experience and recommend you try it out.

This is the second time I’m here, first with my wife and second because of the positive experience the first time with a group of friends and family. Both times we had a splendid experience here. Marie is awesome, and witty. The food is amazing - the effort they put in is commendable, the staff are friendly, neat and clean facilities, great ambiance. All in all, a great place to be spend time with your group, indulging in the food and ambiance. A sunny day is essential to enjoy the outdoor space - it’s Ireland.

You will enjoy this quaint, colourful place. Had a ham, cheess, tomato and onion toastie which includes cole slaw and a salad. All was wonderful. Be aware: CASH ONLY (they accepted Pounds Sterling, although located in the Republic of Ireland where Euros are expected).

Beautiful tea room. You feel like you’re at the Mad Hatters tea party. Service was exceptional. Huge selection of cakes and tea. Skip the pubs and have tea instead when you visit Carlingford 🫖

Nestled in the heart of Carlingford, Ma Bakers is a beloved pub that captures the essence of local charm and hospitality. Guests rave about their traditional Irish offerings, particularly the hearty beef and Guinness pie and some of the best fish and chips around—crispy, fresh, and utterly satisfying.
Had a family holiday in Carlingford and went here a few times. I love the place. Had good music and it. Just a good old school pub

Lovely small local pub. Good guinness and good music. The football was on but good that only one small TV left on and the volume turned down.
Stephen — Google review
Owner turned a blind eye to SEXUAL HARASSMENT. I was having the best time with my friends which turned sour when I noticed a man taking inappropriate videos of me. I gave him a dirty look and he began to video the rest of the room to make it look like that’s what he had been doing. My friend and myself confronted the man and asked to see it and it was indeed a weird video focusing on me and my lower half. I reported him to the bouncer who said he doubted that he did that as he’s a regular despite me seeing the video. He agreed to speak to him and after making him delete the video, he let him back in to sit in the same spot beside us. I said that I didn’t feel comfortable and would prefer if he left. The bouncer then got the owner of the bar who said that he knows he wouldn’t do something like (despite the video existing) I asked how he would know for certain and he replied that they were friends. He said “We got him to delete it, what else do you want me to do?” I asked to remove him and he said “no I’m not going to do that”. I was shocked at what I was hearing and that this behaviour was being enabled and allowed. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before and I was genuinely horrified at how ma bakers handled the situation. The man should have been removed immediately and it is obvious they do not prioritise the safety of their female customers. I will absolutely never be back and will be telling anyone I know to avoid it.
Celene B — Google review
Back again, august 2024 and had one pint of Guinness and left, terrible pint compared to the last time (and a few drinking it so no excuses about flow) Also the staff barely talk unless you're a regular ............. Super friendly and chatty staff Good pint of Guinness Free music Highly recommend
Jeffrey K — Google review
Irish lads, middle of the day, in an empty pub, trying to have a bit of craic. But apparently that’s a crime now. God forbid there be noise in a pub at 2 in the afternoon—what were we thinking? Thank heavens the barman was there, swooping in every five minutes to make sure our laughter levels didn’t exceed the approved tourist-friendly decibel limit. Because clearly, Ireland isn’t for Irish people anymore—it’s for wide-eyed visitors who need their “authentic” pint-and-shamrock experience in total library silence. Wouldn’t want to ruin the theme park vibe with actual Irish voices, would we? So lads, take note: Carlingford—where you can pay Irish prices to feel completely unwelcome in your own country. Never again will I bother holidaying here, since clearly the message is loud and clear: Irish people not wanted
Ral J — Google review
Beautiful interior, excellent food and very friendly service
R K — Google review
Rude staff, expensive pints, no food served despite signs so such. Came back later for a night cap and a bouncer wouldn't leave us in saying "locals only".
Jay — Google review
Not only are their pints €7 but they don't serve food anymore and get mad if you bring food in from a local store. We were eating food outside on benches in their courtyard with nobody around and we had bought a couple expensive pints, we were then told food isnt allowed... But they don't serve food ... But they advertise they have food... But they don't serve food. Terrible. Just go to PJ O'Rourkes next door.

The park features enchanting decorations of leprechauns, mythical creatures, and other folklore elements, making it a perfect attraction for both kids and adults. This was my 6th time visiting the park and I keep coming back to show my friends and family who visit Ireland. All of the small and funny details are sure to put a smile on your face and leave a lasting memory! I’d recommend a visit to anyone.

This is small but it's free to visit and very well done. Well worth the stop if you're close by, and not just for children. The stories are interesting for everyone- it's a mixed of jokes and actual irish folklore.

Good place to visit if in the area. Parked on the road and enjoyed the various sculptures and funny information signs. Also took the tour with the Leprechaun Whisperer which was great craic.
Claire M — Google review
A nice park at a walkable distance from Carlingford town. They have these unique installments with folklore stories written next to them. The admission to the park is free. There are some picnic tables as well. The view of the mountains is fantastic. It can get a little windy during the evenings.
Veda M — Google review
So sweet. Children would love it. Maybe a few things could do with a bit of a revamp but it's privately owned and they give all monies collected to charity
Nora T — Google review
Fun place to be, lovely way to waste an hour and also young kids will love it, right at a beach so the view is fantastic also.
Patrick S — Google review
Great little experience. Folklore with a twist. Enjoyable for both adults and children. No entrance fee. There is an honesty box at the house for donations to The Marie Gorretti respite care centre for children with severe disabilities. The experience and work put into making the park is to be applauded and well worth a decent donation.

Nestled in a charming corner, Riina's is a delightful Italian eatery that exudes warmth and character. With its friendly staff and inviting atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot for both casual dining and special occasions. Guests rave about the authentic cuisine, particularly the pizza and seafood risotto, which are standout dishes. Many patrons have enjoyed multiple visits, consistently praising the high-quality food that reflects true Italian flavors—especially those who have experienced Tuscany firsthand.
Highly recommended! Best italian food we had in a long time. We had pizza, scallops and mussels and everything was just so delicious. The prices are absolutely fair and the two waitresses were nice and attentive. The restaurant is very cozy and atmospheric. I would almost say romantic :) You can only pay with cash and i think a reservation beforehand makes sence since there a not that many tables. I believe there is an outdoor gastronomy in the warmer month.

Happy friendly atmosphere with friendly staff. Nice choice of food, Pizza very good, Seafood risotto very good. Choclate Pizza dessert was a surprise. Very lovely.

Nice little Italian restaurant. They don't take bookings, walk in only. Ring the bell to get in. We had starter and main, Husbands was lovely my main was bland and the chicken was not good in the dish. I had Polio Romano, wouldn't recommend it. Overall though staff are very friendly and the restaurant is nice.
Jacqui T — Google review
We were the first to arrive (2 adults and 4 kids) at the restaurant. Order pizzas for the kids and starters and mains for the adults Waited 45+ minutes to get the starters. When asked how long for the mains and kids pizzas they said 40 min more... By this time the kids were starving. Paid for the starters and drinks and left. Plus they dont accept card payments...in 2025... We are really looking forward to try this restaurant but after this very bad experience we will not being going back.

Avoid the Pappadelle Steak Pasta dish - this was beyond disappointing the meat in it was grisly and tasted of nothing - and not at all the same steak my brother in law had with his roasted potatoes which looked good. My sister in law, who had ordered the same as me probably had a few mouthfuls and discretely covered the plate with her napkin. Normally I might have said something but when you are being taken out that seems ungrateful - so I am warning others for future visits! Pizzas looked nice - I obviously mis-ordered. Did not go a bundle on the service which not in any way attentive and this was a Wednesday night when they had just opened, so not busy. It's cute inside though. I found having to ring to go and and door being unlocked to get out rather annoying. We won't be going back.
Toni M — Google review
was told it was cash only at the door , then had to be let in and out of the restraunt by a gate only staff could open , then proceeded to wait 2hours ,yes 2 hours for our food everyone in the restaurant was also waiting for the same period of time , two of us had ordered the same dish and was served with mix matched pasta as a seems of a last result overall very disappointing experiance
Aimee M — Google review
I’ve been to the restaurant twice now, and once for take away. All three times the food was to the highest standard. The cuisine is authentic Italian and absolutely delicious (I lived in Tuscany for a while, might be different to other regions). Price you pay and what you get is more than worth it, and very competitive for Irish standards. Highly recommendable, especially the seafood. Music was loud enough to hear but not too loud to be unable to have a conversation. Atmosphere cozy with opportunities to sit without direct light shining in your face, if that’s something important to you.

I absolutely recommend trying their mushroom and chicken vol-au-vent for starters; it's a delicious choice. We had a brilliant dinner here 2 weeks ago as a family of 7, the food came pipping hot staff were very pleasant couldn't do enough definitely a place to go back too, we went back today just 3 of us, I really wished we hadn't bothered, we waited half an hour on food which when it came was barely warm, we were given a bowl of veg between 3 of us last time it was a bowl of veg between 2 Yorkshire pudding was tiny and definitely not made from scratch , they were the first time we went cos they were soft and massive, my son wouldn't eat is ham cos it was so dried up, the staff had time to chat to other customers but not us, not even to ask us was everything ok, and other customers came in and had their food way before us and there was 4 adults and 2 children, my husband said we have been forgotten about and I think we had with the food been luke warm, and another customer got his dinner and a bowl of veg to himself. Don't understand this , not a consistent place and staff not friendly the owner friendly the first time we went but never spoke at all this place, definitely will not go back .

Just returned from GH after a 2-night birthday celebration & it was just perfect from start to finish. The house itself, the staff, service, rooms..everything was just wonderful. But the food needs a special mention, every morsel was delicious. We were lucky to be there for the Christmas Candlelight dinner (tasting menu) with carols & songs from the musicals by soprano Sarah McCourt. Thank you Paul & team for a memorable stay. Wishing you all a happy & peaceful Christmas 🎄

We had an amazing time at Ghan house beautifully situated in the heart of Carlingford on its own private grounds. an oasis in an already beautiful spot. The staff were fantastic friendly and efficient. Nothing was too much work. The breakfast is possibly one of the best I’ve ever had you have to try the pears with turmeric. The dining room was so elegant. It had beautiful antique China.. we had an excellent four course meal the scallops were a highlight five stars an amazing place for a short break.

I had heard so much about Ghana House, Ghana House this & Ghana House that but I have to say that it was Ghana House everything. What a beautiful place to stay. From the moment we opened the front door to the time we left, our stay is just perfect. We were given Room 2 in the main house, which was really a family room with 2 doubles & a quirky bunk bed. The bed was probably the most comfortably bed I have slept in. Dinner was excellent with amazing flavours. Each course seemed to be better than the previous one. The hotel has 2 AA rosettes for food, it deserves a 3rd. Staff were so pleasant & we were made to feel that we were their most important guest. Definitely a place to return to.
