Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the charming town of Chaves, the Castelo de Chaves is a delightful historical gem that offers visitors a glimpse into Portugal's rich past. This well-preserved castle, which dates back to around 1160 when it was conquered by knights Rui and Garcia Lopes for the Portuguese Crown, stands proudly on a hill overlooking the picturesque cityscape and surrounding landscapes.
A beautiful small castle that is still intact from its origin, one of the many castles that still stand in Portugal. There is a garden and easy to park on street paid parking. This castle on a hill it overlooks the city scapes of chaves and the landscape that surrounds the city. I also recommend to visit the old downtown that is near the castle where you can still feel the architecture from medieval era.
Sergio B — Google review
Cute small castle with french garden and nice views to the river and downtown. Entrance not well signaled. You need to enter - one big medieval stair - to know prices and all.
Priscilla D — Google review
Castelo de Chaves Type: castle/museum Time spent: 30-40 min. Parking: available Bike parking: not available Path for disabled: not available Price: 1 EUR Local tradition states, that around 1160 the brothers Rui and Garcia Lopes, knights of D. Afonso Henriques, conquered Chaves for the Portuguese Crown. For this feat, they would have been rewarded by the sovereign with the domains of the town and its castle. The bodies of the brothers are buried in the Church of Santa Maria Maior. Some authors state that the construction of this keep was a response to the construction of Monterey Castle, on the opposite side of the border, in the kingdom of Galicia. The castle would return to action during the Restoration Period, and its defenses were modernized, and adapted to then-modern artillery fire. To this end, between 1658 and 1662 the town's lower walls were rebuilt.

Ig - @oursceneos Perched on a high vantage point overlooking the city, the medieval castle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Adjacent to the castle lies a beautifully landscaped garden, perfect for leisurely strolls, and a well-preserved fortress from the modern era, adding layers of historical richness to the experience. As one of the city's top tourist attractions, this area invites visitors to immerse themselves in centuries of history while enjoying the serene beauty of its surroundings. Whether you're an avid history enthusiast or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, the castle and its surroundings promise a memorable and enriching visit.

Castle quite compact. A military museum as they seem to be. Very reasonable admission and you have access to the roof for the views. In the town so easy to get to
Roger T — Google review
It's more of a tower than a full-on castle. Inside however is a nice little military museum going up several flights with eventual access to the roof area, giving great panoramic vies of Chaves. Museum good value at 1e per person.

Museums
Nestled along the picturesque banks of the Tamega River in Chaves, Portugal, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea Nadir Afonso stands as a tribute to one of the country's most celebrated artists. Opened in July 2016 and designed by renowned architect Alvaro Siza Vieira, this sleek museum is dedicated exclusively to showcasing Nadir Afonso's artistic journey.
A beautiful museum with great pictures. Free to enter and definitely worth visiting for an hour or so. The short path on the gorgeous river side of the building is also beautiful. You should also at least put your head into the Roman Baths museum (also free) and perhaps walk along the river past the stunning ancient bridge to find the very hot running tap from the natural spring. Chaves is a relaxing and beautiful town to visit: the Ibis hotel is good and the Biclaque Trajano and Carvalho Restaurants. Go!
Ben M — Google review
Beautiful architecture of the building! The exhibition is, in my opinion not worth of 10€, it’s really small, only 4 or 5 rooms and not so much about the artist, Nadir Afonso. I would like to see some info about him and his work… Some exhibition rooms were close.
Bárbara V — Google review
I really like the works of Nardir Afonso. He combines Geometric Abstraction, architecture with Kinetic art. Moreover, the artworks of Ema Berta are quite impressive since the sharp colors and animation.
Jing W — Google review
What makes a place is the quality of the people. I can bear with a less comfortable space or with an exhibition that is not so interesting and even with the fact that this place doesn't represent Nadir Afonso at all. But what I can't handle is with people that doesn't reflect the values of the artist and person they represent. Besides that I could also refer that the library is a joke and the building itself is a "white elephant" with great potential but with no use. Good luck for handling that, you will need it!
Bruno D — Google review
Ticket 5€ . Nadir Afonso, the greatest portuguese artist of all times. Ema Berta is also an excelent artist

Building with bright spaces from award winning architect Siza Vieira that showcases a very beautiful collection of paintings from Nadir Afonso. Highly recommended.
Hugo P — Google review
Worth a visit to learn about the life and times of Nardir Afonso a local but much travelled architect who later concentrated on his abstract art. 5€ entrance fee no discounts for pilgrims which is a shame. Covid-19 compliant including temperature checks.

When exploring the charming town of Chaves, one cannot overlook the stunning Trajano Bridge, an ancient Roman stone pedestrian bridge that gracefully spans the Tâmega River. This architectural marvel features elegant arches and inscribed columns, serving as a testament to its historical significance since Roman times. As you stroll across this iconic structure, especially during sunset, you'll be captivated by how it beautifully reflects warm hues against the river and surrounding buildings.

Ig: @oursceneos Epigraphy provides valuable insights into the diverse peoples who once inhabited the region of Aquae Flaviae, a former Roman municipality that served as the regional capital of the ancient Conventus Bracaraugustanus and later the Province of Gallaecia. These inscriptions offer a fascinating glimpse into the social and cultural fabric of this important historical area. The remnants of these ancient writings, carved in stone, reveal the rich mosaic of ethnicities and communities that coexisted in Aquae Flaviae, painting a vivid picture of life during the Roman Empire. Whether marking significant events, honoring notable figures, or commemorating local traditions, these epigraphic records are a testament to the region’s vibrant past. Exploring these inscriptions not only allows one to step back in time but also deepens the understanding of how Aquae Flaviae played a pivotal role in the broader structure of Roman administration and its transition into the later periods of Gallaecia. Visitors and scholars alike are drawn to these relics of antiquity, as they continue to offer endless discoveries about the lives, beliefs, and governance of those who shaped this historic landscape. Whether you’re passionate about Roman history or simply curious to learn more, the epigraphy of Aquae Flaviae opens a window to a bygone era, inviting you to explore the fascinating stories etched in stone.

(Translated by Google) Of Romanesque origin, it is believed to have been built over a Roman temple during the reign of Bishop Hydatius. The first historical reference dates back to 1259, and the tower and portico remain from this period. It was restored during the reign of King John III (16th century), imitating the Renaissance models of the time, and underwent further renovations in the 18th century. Its interior consists of three naves, raised on thick columns and covered by a chestnut wood ceiling. A vault rises above the main altar, and a lantern crowns the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. In a square next to the church stands a Manueline-style pillory, where sentences were carried out in medieval times.

With its friendly and efficient staff, patrons are treated to an enjoyable time while relishing their superbly crafted burgers. I arrived at just after noon on a great afternoon. Staff was great, basic cheeseburger was great, seating was right next to river, and espresso was very smooth. House red wine went well with the burger.

We waited for an hour in a dining area with multiple screaming children, for a burger & salad with chicken. Then we were told they were out of chicken. So we left without eating. In response to the owners response: Our order may have been taken at 1:45 but we waited a long time for our order to be taken. You seated us at the opposite end of a communal table from a family of 3, which we agreed to. You did not offer to pay for our food, and we were not looking for that regardless. Finally, we left because we now knew that after waiting more than an hour you had not even begun to prepare our food. You did pay for the sodas and apologize, which we appreciate, but we did not have confidence in how much longer it would take and we were out of time.

One of the best burgers I have had lately. My wife had the Tropical and I had the Classic. The Passionflower sangria is incredible. Our Portuguese is not good but the waiter spoke English too and the menu has English. The restaurant is right on the river next to the Roman bridge so the view is perfect. Highly recommend.

Food was good, had to wait way to long for the food arrive, we were like 6 tables on the terrace and all had, the same situación. Next time i Will choose other place.

We were quite disappointed because of bad, even somewhat unfriendly service. We ordered cocktails to be followed later by the food - this was explicitly asked for. Unfortunately the food came just seconds after our first sip of poor cocktails. Not a word of apology so we refused to keep the rather expensive cocktails. The food was ok.

Adega Faustino is a charming restaurant located in the old town of Chaves, offering traditional local cuisine in a rustic setting that recreates an ancient wine cellar with wine barrels. The restaurant is known for serving the best of Tras-os-Montes regional cuisine and has received praise for its delicious house red carafe and mouthwatering lamb chops.
Delicious tapas! Amazing desserts! Superb service! In our opinion a little pricey !

It feels like it's set up for big scale/volume and strange tablet ordering - which didn't help the vibe. However the food was good (simple regional dishes) and was quick. In addition it has a great atmosphere of sitting in an old Adega.

The "cozido à Portuguesa" is a terrible choice: no flavour, served cold and with bad quality pork and cow meat. The beans were undercooked and wine of the house is also of bad quality. I have been charged 15.80 for the "cozido" and the "wine of the house". Expensive and terrible quality!

Absolutely spectacular service… Obrigado Elisabete!! Absolutely delicious food… from starters to dessert! Absolutely delightful place!! An amazing experience! Muito obrigado!
José M — Google review
A cheap place asking for expensive prices and a below average service. Food was ok but nothing special. Almost everything is charged separately , e.g., you order a steak and you are overcharged with rice, chips, or whatever you want as a side dish. An exception to this is a meager steak which was tasteless, dry, and salty. House red wine was acceptable but too expensive for its real value. The atmosphere is not very pleasant either, and location is horrible for car parking. Overall, it’s not an experience to repeat.
Joao S — Google review
It appears to be more of a place created to attract tourists rather than serve foods for locals and it shows in the quality. Dishes are okay in taste, but it's not as satisfying as the type of food they serve(more comforting) should've been. Service is good though, but it looks like their kitchen can't keep up with the flow of tourist this place attracts. We waited around 40min for our order to come. I think that the most outstanding thing in here was the interior itself, you can feel the energy of wine in the air ahaha However, as for me it was too empty, I felt somehow "exposed" and felt like I couldn't speak louder than whispering. All of that aside, the thing that irritated me the most was the prices, because you aren't paying for the whole dish in here, instead you choose main course which is protein of some sort and then pick the side dishes apart. It results in overpaying on basic things you find cheaper in other places, like salads and rice. So in the end you end up with mediocre meal, but got to pay up to 15-20€ for it.

Monumento do Amor is a beautiful space with views of the river, providing a fantastic idea for lovers to hang their padlocks without causing any damage. It serves as a lovely tribute to love, offering couples the opportunity to add their padlock and capture romantic moments. The area also features benches for resting or dating, along with good shading, making it an ideal spot for a photo with your loved one.

Poldras de Chaves

Poldras de Chaves, preserved for centuries, were strategically placed by the Flavians to enable crossing the Tamega River and reduce long distances. The stones are generally stable, offering a unique experience in the middle of the river. Despite potential crowds in summer, it's worth the wait for this beautiful and historically significant site. Walking on these ancient stones may be a bit intimidating but provides great fun and stunning scenic views of the stone bridge from a distance.
We have booked a personalized treatment. Everything very clean and exquisite treatment.
A T — Google review
It's exciting to have a go at crossing the river like this but not for the faint-hearted! If you start on the southern side, you'll come across a few loose and wobbly stones at the beginning, which will test your balance. But the worst thing is that currently in three places some stones have moved and are leaning to one side, creating greater distance between them in those three places. You really have to jump in those places to get across. This should really be fixed..as well as the wobbly stones! It could be made safer.. but I don't know, maybe it's supposed to be dangerous!
Nat F — Google review
Felt a little scared to walk on the stones but it was great fun. And the scenery of the stone bridge is quite beautiful from the distance. A must go!

Restaurant
Maxi Leitão, located near the Castel of Chaves, offers a picturesque ambiance that is highly recommended for those seeking a warm and well-presented atmosphere. The staff is exceptionally friendly and one of the female servers provided enticing menu recommendations. The gambas com alho (garlic shrimp) and esferinhas crocantes (crispy spheres) were delightful starters with impeccable flavors.
We enjoyed a delicious, and delightful Sunday lunch of baby pig and cod -- both dishes well-prepared and full of flavor. If we were to return, however, we would probably take advantage of the large pork offering. The restaurant is small with seating inside for 20 so reservations might be needed.

Very tiny cozy place. Tables for 2 or 4. Cute. Menu super small. 2-4 options for “meat” and “fish” and another 2-4 for small side dish like bread and cheese. Kinda forces your hand to choose between the cheapest option “prego no Prato” (small thin steak with rice & egg) and something around 35 euros for leitao. I got the prego no Prato. Steak was fine. Rice and potato chips had zero seasoning. Opens at 7pm.

Industrialist ice cream. Typical taste. Service manager lacks respect, first demanding 4 elderly to leave the table for other customers, then telling them they misunderstood him, as he was just asking if they’d like to have anything more. Clearly a disrespectful lie as they were not finished with their drinks. Full house with a lot of tables constantly in rotation. No reason to agitate elder local people having a good time. This site won’t see me again.
