Rjukan in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Rjukan, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Rjukan combines dramatic industrial history with striking mountain scenery. Visitors can explore the Vemork power plant and Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum, linked to the famous WWII heavy water sabotage, and see parts of the Rjukan–Notodden UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearby Gaustatoppen offers one of Norway’s widest panoramas, accessible by hiking or the Gaustabanen funicular inside the mountain. The town is also known for the Krossobanen cable car, outdoor activities in all seasons, and innovative sun mirrors that brighten the valley during the dark winter months.
With favorites like Krossobanen nedre, Kjakan, statue av Gunnar Sønsteby, and Krossobanen, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Dong fang resturant and Kinokafeen AS so you can get the best taste of Rjukan while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum is located 7km west of Rjukan, inside the Vemork power station. Initially the world's largest when completed in 1911, it now pays tribute to the Socialist Workers' Party and its peak activities in the 1950s. The museum features an intriguing exhibition on the race to develop an atom bomb during the 1930s and '40s, as well as a remarkable miniature power station in its main hall.
Interesting power plant with lots of history! And of course the famous stories about the sabotage actions during WW2! Worth a visit when you are around! Nice guide tours in English and multiple exhibitions about the construction, usage and sabotage.
Tjeerd V — Google review
Stopped in the gorgeous town for a little window shopping and a break. On my way out on the heavy serpentine saw this interesting power station. Seen some of them with those scary pipes in my youth in West Virginia under construction and I stopped for a photo. I knew that must be a piece of my beloved Norway's hydropower history. Way to go Vikings, go and get even richer on free hydro power electricity! I envy you so much, all Norwegians, I wish I could've been born in your wonderland! God bless you all!

Very impressive and interesting historical monument. Really spectacular building and the nature around is breathtaking. Worth the visit.

Great museum, where you can feel atmosphere from WW2 period. There are also some interactive devices that allows to learn facts in an interesting way.

Really worth a visit. The story is historically important, facinating and moving. I spent several hours here and in the surrounding area.

Fabulous museum with some very interesting history of Norway. Well worth a visit particularly if you are interested in world war 2 history.

For me this is importent historical place where the norwegian saboteurs prevented germany from making uranium from heavy water produced at Vemork. Importent fir whole world. Recomend buying tickets online, a bit cheaper.😊😊🇳🇴🇳🇴.
Eirik O — Google review
Wouldn’t bother. You’ll spend half the time on the tourist bus from Rjuken. Poorly signed and little information on the website. Staff could not care less, a very underwhelming experience and this should not be a UNESCO world heritage site.

Bus stop
Nestled in the heart of Rjukan, Krossobanen is a remarkable cable car that has been serving both locals and visitors since its inception in 1928. Originally built by Norsk Hydro to help workers escape the town's six-month-long winter darkness, this iconic lift now offers breathtaking views as it transports you up to Gvepseborg.
Great little tour, you should go for a hike on the topp!
Emma K — Google review
If you are in Rjukan definitely go here and take this cableway. Even if you would just ride to the upper station and back it is worth it. The view from the top station to the surrounding mountains is overwhelming. However, if you have time you can go and take some beautiful hiking trips around starting from upper station. For example, the trail called "Solstien", which was built over Rjukan by Nepalese Sherpas who were invited here by the National Park Administration. It leads through a magnificent fjell, with stunning views of Gaustatoppen, from the upper station of the Krossobanen cable car to an anti-aircraft artillery position from World War II, when fierce fighting over the Rjukan area and over Norsk Hydro concern where Germany work on the plan to complete the atomic bomb. Or Haddelandsveien - a steep and challenging trail from the upper station of the Krossobane cable car to the center of Rjukan. It is recommended only for experienced hikers and only in dry conditions. The route is only 8 km short, but it is very steep. On the way, you can stop at the famous Solspeilet or Ryukan mirrors.

Rjukan Square is a unique destination, particularly known for its remarkable Solspeilet mirrors that reflect sunlight onto the square. This innovative feature brightens up what is often considered one of the darkest places on Earth during winter months, where direct sunlight is scarce. The experience of visiting Rjukan Square in this setting is truly magical, as the giant mirrors create an enchanting atmosphere that transforms the space into a vibrant hub even amidst the cold and darkness.
Awsome, especially in the winter with the giant mirrors pointing at it 😃

The Gaustabanen is a remarkable cable car that takes visitors deep into the heart of Gausta mountain before climbing 1040m at a steep angle alongside 3500 steps to reach an elevation of 1800m, just shy of the summit. Originally constructed by NATO in 1958 for $1 million, it was designed to provide all-weather access to its radio tower.
Great to be at the top, worth the 1 1/2 hour in line to catch the train up to the top. Walked back down. Some waiting time during high season. Easter and Summer Holidays. On a clear day you can see 1/6 of Norway, and all the way to Sweden. Nice views. Recommend purchasing tickets online to save some on the ticket price. 530 NOK for adult and 300 NOK for child 4-16 if bying at the kiosk. A bit cheaper bying online.
Arnstein E — Google review
Super nice view one of the tops,, the tickets are super expensive: You can take the train up, and walk down but never do it in winter without proper shoes, They dont tell you while buying a ticket so that you will need to buy a new ticket from top to down, So if you want to take the train down as well than buy a 2 - way ticket. If you want to walk all the way up then i recommend walking up from the other parking since its less steeper than from here. We took the train up and It took us about 1.5 hours to only get down as we are used to hiking, it usally takes 2-3 hours up/down
Sandesh A — Google review
Very nice view (if clear) on the surroundings. Have a delicious waffle on top 😀
Lore S — Google review
Worst thing I tried in Norway by far.. no info about that you have to wait for an hour and half in fridge temp to get down again with the train. Nice view but walk. And when you get down and ask why there’s is no info about the wait time no meet by the worst people possible. A big scam
Andreas G — Google review
Death defiying ride on a little train into the mountain, then changing to an almost vertical funicular to the top. We were told you could see for miles around d on a clear day, check the weather before you go!!
Colin M — Google review
This was an amazing opportunity for me as a disabled person. You can catch a train up and inside the mountain which is a fun and exciting experience on it's own. This gives you a chance to experience the amazing view of so much of Norway from the top of the mountain. Which I otherwise would not have been able to experience. There is also a very good waffle house up there too.
Karla ( — Google review
For those who doesn’t want to hike up to the top, this is an alternative way. Easier and faster. You must book tickets in advance and remember that they are closing earlier than usual if there’s no tourist. So its better to book in advance.
Meriam D — Google review
Awesome and unique experience to enjoy a train inside the mountain which goes 850m inside straight into the mountain and then 1030m (vertical) to the top of the mountain. Takes 15min to reach to the top point and you can enjoy hot waffles in the cafe there. Do check the weather before you go there as it can change rapidly.

Chinese restaurant
Dong Fang Restaurant is a delightful spot that captures the essence of authentic Chinese cuisine. Nestled in Rjukan, this eatery boasts a warm and inviting atmosphere, beautifully decorated to enhance your dining experience. Guests have praised the swift service and friendly staff, who are quick to rectify any mix-ups with orders. The menu offers a variety of dishes, though it features just one vegetarian option humorously named 'Vegetarian Food,' which surprisingly delights diners with its flavor.
As an Asian, I would say this is a really authentic Chinese restaurant serving really great Chinese food! The food was so good we wiped it out before we could take pictures…Ordered the oriental temptation, sichuan beef, hot plate chicken, Peking soup and fried rice and they were all a hit!!! Owner was also super sweet and welcoming, really felt like home❤️
Samace C — Google review
They have one vegetarian/ vegan dish with veggies and rice. It tastes good, the portion could have been a bit bigger and it was missing tofu. Overall, fine indoors and outdoors sitting areas.
Anastasia — Google review
Only one vegetarian/vegan item that they could not confirm had/had not got oyster sauce in. Staff were very reluctant to answer polite questions. Mid level for the meat eaters, at best. Probably the best place in Ryuken though as it was busy!
Emma W — Google review
Nice Chinese restaurant with good food. Nice owners.
Tjeerd V — Google review
We had a very good time here. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the place is very nicely decorated. Service was fast and everyone was very nice. They brought me a different dish than the one I ordered at first, but the mistake was promptly corrected. The food was good, fresh and hot. Nicely served as well. There is only one vegetarian dish in the whole (pretty sizable) menu and it's literally called 'Vegetarian Food'. That made me laugh out loud. But my 'Vegetarian Food' was tasty, so I didn't mind.
Siekierezada — Google review
didn’t have high expectations initially but all the dishes took me by a pleasant surprise :). all dishes were very yummy and the customer service was excellent as well. will recommend especially if you are craving chinese asian dishes! :)

Got multiple dishes here today. Got the shrimp, duck, and honey marinated pig. All the dishes were good and serving was very fair. Prices were fair at 165kr per main course. Nothing to really complain about at all. Good experience.
Viking A — Google review
After reading the reviews, we were very skeptical to visit the restaurant. But, had a surprising experience. 3 dishes that we ordered was served in less than 10mins!!!.Food taste is not surprising, just same as other Chinese restaurants in Norway but fair enough. Cleanliness and the ambience is much better compared to other restaurants in the area. Large portion size, reasonable price. What else to expect from a highly touristic place like this? Our entire dinner including dessert was over in 30 mins.... Deserves MUCH better review.

Nestled in the charming town of Rjukan, Kinokafeen AS is a delightful spot that captures the essence of local dining. This cozy café offers a warm atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a variety of dishes made with fresh ingredients. The menu features an array of options, catering to different tastes and preferences, making it an ideal choice for both casual meals and special occasions.
We loved the service by the new owner. It was a pleasure to sit in that big room that was close for way too long. We will come multiple times a month.

Cafeteria is based in very special heritage house. The house was build by workers unions hundred years ago like “Temple of Socialism”. Temple of socialism not survived. Maybe because of lacking the priests. Now it look more like temple of cinema.

Deilicious coffee. Friendly staff. Nice and spacious outdoor seating. Haven't tried the food. Update: The food comes in big portions and is delicious. We were three people who ordered different meals.

Went here for dinner and didn’t know what to expect, but was surprised by how well our experience was. The dinner was delicious, with locally sourced ingredients and proportional portions. The dessert was fantastic, Especially the homemade sorbet. The prices were fair, and it was well worth the food and service.
MH G — Google review
Good, local food (which means a bit heavy on meat, potatoes and root vegetables), friendly service and a nice, old-school ambience. Considering that this is the only proper European restaurant outside the hotels in this town, Kinokafeen is doing a pretty good job. Popular with the locals.

Norwegian styled italian resturant in the middle of Rjukan center. Decent food, seasonal resturant. Serves pilsner beer. You can also sit outside in summer and enjoy the sun. Right next door to the cinema Good parking spots nearby. And the local pub just across the road if you want to continue the evening.
