Wakehurst, previously known as Wakehurst Palace, is a stunning National Trust-owned estate featuring a wild botanic garden and the renowned Millennium Seed Bank. Spanning over 500 acres, this West Sussex gem showcases diverse landscapes from around the world, such as Coates Wood with trees from Australasia and South America. As the sister site to Kew's Royal Botanic Gardens, Wakehurst offers free entry for National Trust members and boasts attractions like mazes and hammocks for kids.
Wakehurst botanical garden is a great place to take your dog(s) for a walk. There are several routes you can choose from, we usually take the long round trip. There are some no dog zones but there is plenty to explore where you can take your dog. There is a big field which is an off lead area for doggies, full of smells to sniff. If you come without dogs, I recommend visiting the mansion, the water gardens and the wetland walk around the lake. We have been here in different seasons but there is always something to see or a different route to explore. Highly recommended. Great facilities as well, plenty of parking, toilets in different places and two cafes to choose from.

A stunning wild botanical garden. Really awe inspiring and thoughtfully planted. Fun for children and adults, my daughter enjoyed the mud kitchen and having fun amongst the trees. Cafe was quite expensive so will bear that in mind for our next visit. Plenty of spaces to have a picnic.

Gorgeous site, especially in autumn. Lovely for walks, they have a nice gift shop too. Cafe serves delicious vegetarian and vegan options. The mud kitchen is fantastic for kids.

My daughter & I hadn't been to Wakehurst for quite a long time. I had forgotten just how beautiful it is here. We walked farther than usual and got to enjoy some of the most beautiful parts. Although be warned, when the map says it's a steep hill, it's truly steep 🤣 We certainly got out workout in!! The staff are lovely too, very helpful. It was reasonably busy for a Sunday but not overcrowded at all. We'll definitely return soon no doubt.
Clair H — Google review
Hello everybody. Very nice place to visit . Beautiful gardens and views and very relaxing quiet. The tea rooms were open and all stocked well. I recommend you pay a visit.
Susan I — Google review
Great botanical garden with a variety of views. I would highly recommend visiting the Himalayan glade and pond. Do be aware that the blooms vary quite a lot between seasons, so you may not get to see the same as my images. Good restaurant with reasonable options and prices on site. Ice cream van with good selection too.
Milboy R — Google review
Probably the most amazing gardens I have ever been to! It was very impressive and large and every single part was beautiful. We spent hours looking around in the sunshine and had a great day! So much to see!
Teri-Mai D — Google review
This sister to Kew Gardens is a fine place to spend a few hours wandering around the wooded estate and the attractive small mansion house. Notwithstanding the importance of the scientific and conservation carried out by the Millenium Seedbank, for many visitors the main attractions are the walking trails through the over 500 acre wooded countryside, featuring some of the world's most magnificent trees. These include a substantial number of the world's most massive tree, the giant Californian Redwood, which, despite their relative youth, have already ready reached an impressive 36 meters, and, not to be missed, are the weirdly drooping freaks of the same species. Children up to 16yoa have free entry, adults are £18.50 and young people are 50% of the adult rate. Car parking additional. Hot and cold food at the Stables Kitchen Restaurant and cafes. It is not cheap, but it is a great day out for the whole family.

Borde Hill Garden is a stunning 200-acre garden located in Sussex, offering a mix of formal gardens, parkland, and woodland. The garden features an array of plants from the Himalayas, China, and the Andes dating back to the 1900s. Visitors can explore various themed gardens including rhododendrons, woodland garden, roses, water garden, and enjoy vibrant autumn colors. The location is dog-friendly with ample walking paths and open meadows to explore.
Went today for the jazz on the lawn which was lovely. No extra fee, normal ticket price. Small beautiful gardens, we got round it in an hour tbh but enjoyed a picnic and the music. Kids park is good. X2 ice creams £5. Free parking. A lovely sunny Sunday afternoon.

Borde Hill Garden is a beautiful and peaceful place to wander — not huge, but thoughtfully designed with a lovely variety of themed areas, flower beds, and open lawns. Each section feels different, and there’s plenty of charm to take in if you enjoy a relaxed stroll surrounded by nature. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great during my visit, which made it harder to appreciate the views fully, but it’s easy to imagine how stunning it must be on a sunny day. The grounds are well kept, and there’s a café and plant shop nearby to round off the visit.
Rania M — Google review
Spent an enjoyable two hours. Had a cider in the garden cafe, wandered through the diverse gardens and woodland, and found a couple of interesting books at the secondhand cabin. Cycled here and there are plenty of stands at the end of the car park close to the entrance. Note that the only route is along Borde Hill Lane, which might be a challenge for less confident cyclists.
Marques — Google review
Beautiful garden to explore. Easier than you think to get there by foot. Cafe had delicious scones and the shop was excellent with good value plants.
Rupert D — Google review
A garden of rooms, many of which embrace the landscape beyond which is lovely. There is a fantastic woodland walk and I imagine lots of flowers in the summer. It’s not what I would call a destination garden more one to revisit during different months if you live near by. The Halloween decorations felt very intrusive but I imagine it’s a money spinner. The cafe is pretty but very limited food options. We had a 15 minute wait to get in as someone was buying a membership. They were having to loudly annunciate all their personal details which took ages and a problem easily resolved by filling in a form.
Alison M — Google review
Lovely visit today!!! Weather was just right. We had lovely coffee to take away and enjoyed a walk and used the map we were given. Helpful staff and gardens so beautiful and suggest a visit to anyone who hasn't yet visited. Child friendly so good for families.

Lunch was delicious. Staff really friendly. Save room for cake! We had crustless quiche with salad, that was dressed sublimely. Plus a mix of the potato salad and the spelt salad. The charred vegetables were delicious. Tea, coffee and plum and custard cake to follow. Ate it too quickly for a photo.

Visitors can enjoy coffee at The Bay Tree or explore the market that occasionally takes place there. A fair assortment of shops and very near the car parks. There is a small but well stocked M&S, and when I was there, there was a market running with verg fresh looking fruit and veg. Also, a delightful tea shop called the Bay Tree which is definitely worth a visit

Cafe
Peckish Cafe is a typical greasy spoon cafe located right opposite Haywards Heath Station. It offers the usual fare for a cafe at reasonable prices, with pleasant and quick service. The menu is varied, catering to most requirements, and the staff are friendly and provide fast service. The place is recommended for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with freshly cooked food in good surroundings.
Peckish Cafe is my go-to breakfast or lunch venue in Haywards Heath. Really close to the station and opposite Waitrose. I recommend the Full English, I often have an omelette and salad. Service and food are excellent. Friendly and welcoming. Down to earth vibe which I like.

This is my favourite place when off to work. They have amazing wraps and lovely coffees. My favourite is oat milk cappuccino. Chef is brilliant and super friendly to everyone. Other staff members are courteous as well. It’s always buzzing with people even in the odd hours of the day. I would definitely recommend this cafe👆.

A very clean and nice restaurant. The location is central and great. We started the day with a delicious breakfast and Mr. Hakan's nice and warm conversation and wonderful hospitality. Thank you very much. It has become our favorite place in Haywards Heath.
Arzu T — Google review
Had the breakfast special with a flat white. Coffee huge and milky (so not a flat white). Everything adequate but nothing very good. Why can’t a British cafe aspire to something marginally better? Like decent bread instead of minimal standard industrial and good coffee? And god forbid real butter? Bacon and sausage were fine, beans out of some gigantic bread Sub-Heinz can. Depressing sub-par food.

If you're looking for a comforting breakfast experience, this place really stands out. The food is absolutely fantastic, and the staff goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome and cared for

Restaurant
Francisco Lounge is a delightful spot that caters to a variety of tastes and preferences, making it an ideal destination for families, couples, or groups. During my first visit, I enjoyed breakfast options that were both plentiful and delicious. The ordering process was convenient through a phone app at the table, although special dietary needs must be addressed directly at the bar.
My first visit here. Food is to me somewhat subjective, what appeals to me may not be to you so this is a very general review. We just had breakfasts both the large and ordinary plus an 'allergy free' one for our celiac family member. Our breakfasts were ordered and paid for using the phone app at the table however the allergy free one has to be ordered at the bar and paid for there so be aware. The quality of the food and quantity were good in all cases. My large breakfast was 2 eggs, 3 back bacon, grilled Tomato, black pudding, 3 hash browns, mushrooms, beans (I declined these as they are the food of the devil), two sausages and 2 toast. Tea etc was taken at a separate cost. My only slight annoyance was the sausage it was a very fine cut and I prefer a more coarse cut traditional style . Otherwise all was good the hash browns were crispy and the food was warm. Service was wonderful, polite, friendly and helpful and a real credit to the place! Perfect for a working breakfast meet up, early meet after the school run or just a morning social. I will return but try a later visit and sample the beer !
Ray B — Google review
Beautiful decor, very clean and tidy, lovely atmosphere and very attentive staff. Food was delivered quickly and was very good value for money. Will definitely be returning
Iain M — Google review
Super lovely staff, food was great & they were more than helpful with a special request to help with our pregnancy gender reveal. Lovely atmosphere & great service too. Thank you!
Bethany J — Google review
I am very disappointed in having to write this review about Francisco Lounge. This is my second time eating here. Upon ordering a Burger and Fries (Lounge Burger) to takeaway, I started eating the burger and noticed a black insect on the lettuce. When I took the lettuce out and looked closer, I found even more tiny flies dotted around the lettuce. This obviously raises a serious concern for the food preparation undertaken by the chefs and the measures taken by the restaurant to ensure customers receive food that isn’t contaminated. I requested a full refund from the staff which they had provided. That will be my last time coming to Francisco Lounge.
C H — Google review
If you’re used to a food in London, don’t go here. Food is on par with what is expected at Wetherspoons (without being cheap). Lots of children and no atmosphere. Personally wouldn’t bother to spend money here…. The food would be offsenive to native cuisines (see patas bravas for reference)
Emma B — Google review
After being shown our table we then cleaned it for the staff as it was not looking very healthy…. The table was still sticky which made for a unpleasant feeling anything that came into contact stuck to the table we then asked another server to run a clean cloth over the table but instead of a sorry about that I’ll sort it out attitude we were met with just attitude … the guy who bought over the food was very pleasant and the food was enjoyable… never forget times are hard and in the service industry it’s so easy to get it right and it’s the little things that pertain People remember … if it was up to me I’d walked out but I was with family members and we had two young kids with us.
Jeff M — Google review
I can't fault the Lounges across the UK. How they make them the same but different is genius. Again how they recruit such great teams is a credit. Food always reliable, atmosphere is all about real people enjoying themselves, Francisco Lounge today was superb.
Gary P — Google review
Thought I'd give this place a go as its local and looked interesting. I liked the decor and the atmosphere of the place. I used the app to order a burger meal and a small soft drink. The chips were cooked and seasoned to perfection, I just wish there were more of them! The burger patty was tasty, and I liked the fact that the vegetables and brioche bun tasted fresh. My only minor complaint would be the squeezy ketchup bottle was messy and not closed properly and one of the waiters appeared to be a little messy looking & too loud (no need to shout across the room). I'm looking forward to coming back to try out the other dishes. Glad to have another great place to eat out in Haywards Heath. 17/06/23 - Tried the Full English and it was divine! Best FE breakfast I've had in a while.

Pub
Restaurant
Nestled in a charming village, The Green Man pub is a delightful stop for anyone exploring the area. After an early morning drive to Sussex for Paws in the Park, we stumbled upon this traditional gem. The moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped by its warm atmosphere and friendly staff who made us feel right at home. Despite not having a reservation, they graciously found us a table. Our first visit was memorable; the staff exuded warmth and genuine interest in our experience.
We spotted The Green Man pub on the way to our airbnb as we were in the area for Paws in the Park. We left for Sussex at 3am and we’d had a really long day, the takeaway options weren’t for us so we came to this pub. From the moment we walked in the atmosphere was just perfect. A proper traditional pub with such a warm feeling and the staff were so happy, friendly and polite, as well as really helpful. We hadn’t booked so we walked in on the off chance that they may have a table available and they managed to seat us. Nothing was too much trouble and they went above and beyond for us. The only sauce that my mum likes with steak is Diane sauce and they managed to provide this for her. The staff are attentive and genuinely nice people. If I’m in the area again I’ll definitely be coming to this pub again. Thank you all again for a lovely evening.

Friendly, cosy village pub with a warm welcome, a lovely open fire and a large garden for the summer time. Great for walking groups and cycling tours or for a meal after a trip on the nearby Bluebell Railway. A good selection of beers and fabulous food with a great menu and regularly changing specials.
Paddy H — Google review
A genuine pub. The chicken burger was excellent - for a burger. The fish was massive, which impressed initially. Unfortunately it wasn't that tasty and seemed a bit watery. I personally would prefer a smaller portion of a better quality fish. I have given it the same overall score as over the road... but I would come here again, but not so much over the road.
Greg H — Google review
This was a stop over location on our cycle ride from London to Brighton. Its a slight detour from the route, but we'll worth it. We sat outside with the good weather, service was busy and they have a small bar area. We ordered 2 baguettes and a pie, all came out relatively quite. The fries served with the baguettes were delicious and the baguettes itself was very delicious and filling. The pie was absolutely fabulous, good pastry and a lovely filling, a proper pie cut and not a single individual one. Overall it's a good stop point to make if you are cycling, specially since it's not far from Ditching Beacon.
Justin C — Google review
Mixed feelings, as I report. I assume that someone on the staff didn't like the look of me; or my tone at some point. Who-knows? The first time I went in (6 weeks ago. mid July) the staff who served me were really friendly, chatting warmly and generally interested in sharing a moment. I ordered dinner. It was fine. After around 40 trips to the bar in the last 30 days, they know exactly what I'll order: Same local Ale. 1 pint. Just me and my dog. I haven't seen those chaps much since - on my daily, dog-walking pint in the village - but when I did, they were always warm. The rest of the staff not so much; distant and downright unfriendly generally: Most of the time they don't even acknowledge having ever seen me before - and always seem to determine that everyone else needs serving before I do: I chuckle to myself about that. Only once was the ale poor, which was efficiently changed to an alternate. I arrived one time to find the pub shut (earlier than normal for a Sunday) yet as I contemplated continuing my walk the main misery fetched me a pint outside (no smile; 'pay next time' - I did): Kindness itself seemed to have broken out. I was so pleased and warmed at the generosity and empathy - staggered, really. It seemed a corner had been turned. Then it was back to looking straight through me for the next 3 weeks. Goodness only knows what I did that was so offensive... I have stopped going there now.
Gary R — Google review
I ate here with my family for an impromptu, late lunch. My teenagers chose adult burgers, which the loved and looked delicious. The server quickly dealt with the error in one of our meals. Service throughout was excellent, friendly yet professional. Spot on! I’d definitely recommend this pub for food quality, choice and service.
Emma H — Google review
We came to The Green Man for a Sunday roast with our 4-year-old and were really disappointed. The table was dirty when we arrived, and there were several dead flies around, not exactly the setting you hope for when dining out, especially with a child. Staff didn’t seem particularly friendly or welcoming, which made the experience feel even less inviting. The food was just ok. Edible, but nowhere near the quality you’d expect for the price. Definitely not somewhere we’ll be returning.

Curry Inn is a charming Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant nestled in Haywards Heath, offering a delightful dining experience. The ambiance is relaxed and intimate, featuring modern decor with striking red accents and comfortable white-upholstered chairs that create an inviting atmosphere. This spacious eatery serves a variety of authentic Indian dishes, some infused with contemporary twists, making it a perfect spot for both traditional flavors and innovative cuisine lovers.
I have been coming here since I was very young and the food and service has never disappointed. I cannot recommend this place enough. The food is delicious and very good value and the service as always extremely nice and friendly. I have visited lots other curry houses and I would easily say this is the best one in Haywards Heath.

A very odd taste. Like a Chinese curry sort of flavour. Not what I expected. As a Indian food critic I can say that the dhansak I had wasn’t traditional with no sweet and sour taste and very few lentils. Mutter paneer means paneer with peas - mine had no peas at all and was in a very very sweet korma like masala with other mixed veg. Not very nice at all. Naan was good. Sorry guys - poor. I would not recommend.

We booked a table last minute and quite late in the evening! The staff was happy to help, friendly and they have all delivered a great customer service. Kudos to the chef for cooking such delicious dishes. Onion baaji were done to perfection, crispy and light. Curry was beautiful and it will take you on a journey of flavours. I must admit we were a bit greedy with ordering the food, but the staff was happy to pack what was left as a take away and now we enjoyed their food on our lazy Sunday !!!! Thank you very much for everything and for delivering such a great food and customer service that late in the evening! Definitely coming back soon xx.

Small place but had good food. Food not so expensive. Food is worth for what you pay for.
