Loches in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Loches, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Loches is a remarkably well-preserved medieval town dominated by its hilltop citadel and imposing château, which once served as a royal residence and state prison. Within its fortified walls you’ll find narrow stone streets, half-timbered houses, and the Collegiate Church of Saint-Ours, known for its distinctive Romanesque architecture. The town is quieter and less crowded than many Loire Valley sites, yet still close to famous châteaux and vineyards, making it a good base for exploring the region. Regular markets, small museums, and riverside walks along the Indre add to its relaxed, historic atmosphere.
With favorites like Musée Lansyer, Loches Jardin Public, and Camping La Citadelle - MAEVA, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Le Vicariat-Cité royale and The Originals Boutique, Hôtel Le George, Loches so you can get the best taste of Loches while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Château de Loches is a captivating castle museum that boasts an impressive collection of medieval armor and holds centuries of royal history within its walls. The castle complex includes the Donjon Fortress and the Logis Royal Castle, both accessible with a single ticket. Visitors can also freely wander through the medieval-style city and garden surrounding the château.
Stunning views and scary dungeons, although some of the stairways were challenging if you've got vertigo. Beautiful grounds and gardens, lots of sunny or shady spots for a picnic.
Dave R — Google review
This castle is absolutely worth a visit. Grab a tablet at the entrance to get some extra information on the rooms and locations. It wil give a nice twist to your visit, including a treasure hunt for childeren. Great view over Loches from the tower. Mind your step though! Some of the old staircases are very narrow. Fair price which also includes acces to the kings lodges up ahead.
Wim J — Google review
Phenomenal castle, old city, and royal residence. Just an hour away from Tours on the Rémi bus, a must see for people in the area. You navigate with the histopad, are exposed to helpful signs and guides to direct you, and feel like you're living back in time. Combined best with some reading on mideaval French history.
Dory A — Google review
Nice medical city to visit for a couple of hours. The donjon is beautiful and you can walk around easily. Highly recommend the place
Aurelien G — Google review
Beautiful castle complex. You have to pay 1 ticket to be able to enter both the Donjon Fortress and the Logis Royal Castle, other than that you can roam around for free around the medieval styled city and garden. The ticket is definitely worth to pay, while exploring the Donjon Fortress they'll give you a tablet called Histopad intstalled with a very interactive application to help you explore the fortress, with Histopad your experience feels like a treasure hunt (good for kids and adventurous people!) Prepare to take a lot of staircases and to walk a lot.

Fabulous castle and grounds! A lot of climbing around inside. A must see

Nestled in the Loire Valley, the Royal City of Loches is a charming destination with a rich history. The cobbled streets lead to ancient dwellings and fortified gates like Porte des Cordeliers and Porte Royale, evoking a sense of time travel. Despite its small population, this town boasts a medieval castle, royal Renaissance love nest, and stunning skyline. The Chateau and Royal Lodge overlook the town from atop a hill, accessible through an imposing gatehouse.
It was my third time, and I am still amaze everytime. The architectural design, the view the entrance. I still love going back when I have time. And it's free, you just need to pay if you want to go inside the Logis Royale. Have fun and enjoy the view. And the staffs are very kind and welcoming.

Chateau and Royal Lodge set on a hill top overlooking the town of Loches. Access to the city is through an imposing gatehouse and narrow streets wind their way to the Logis Royale and Donjon. A joint ticket gives access to both at a reasonable price. The keep was closed for safety reasons.

Without a doubt, one of the most unique hotels I have stayed in. Super friendly staff. Fascinating town. We ate at the restaurant and really enjoyed it. What a treat to find something like this.

Lovely old city, very well preserved, and lots to see. Plenty of restaurants and cafes, and a lovely park.

We paid 12 Euros each to visit the castle and the dungeon. It is very pretty and beautifully kept. I would not spend to see inside again as there isn't really a lot to see. A pretty town, great for a 2/3 hour stop off.

Beautiful fortress, was kind of disappointed tho to see the emptiness of the rooms. The jail and caves were preserved in good conditions .

Just great traditional French cuisine in a historic setting with a view. Staff was friendly, options were interesting and diversified, and most importantly, food was delicious.

(Translated by Google) Restaurant offering a beautiful view next to the Logis Royal de Loches. The offerings may be limited and the desserts may seem a little small but the dishes are delicious. The homemade lasagna and the stuffed eggplant arrive in dishes and we can see that they have had time to brown and that they have just come out of the oven. It feels like home. The salads are well garnished and the price is right. Dogs are allowed on the terrace and the waiter even brought us a bowl of water when he seated us, thank you for this kind attention. Very nice hotel. View to river is special. Location is right in the middle of town. Room clean and well equipped but a bit on the small side. Wasn't sure about parking before we arrived and so was disappointed that despite a Booking App message and an e mail I only got an answer when I ask asked the hotel reception.

Not the best stay... Room was cold and shower had large temperature swings. On a more positive note: the breakfast had plenty of choice.

This venue has a new owner since a few years. We had an excellent lunch on a Saturday afternoon with beautiful view on the Indre river. Delicious meal, comfortable seats and attentive service. Reservations recommended.
H S — Google review
Excellent cuisine and service. After booking a river view room 4 weeks earlier, we got an attic room on the main street. A higher priority client must have supplanted us. I was initially refused a discount, but then given a small reduction as an afterthought. But being sidelined still rankles.

Restaurant
Le Presbytère-Cité royale Chambres d’hôtes & restaurant offers a delightful dining experience with superb views of the old church and surrounding countryside. The salads are generously portioned and delicious, while the service is excellent. Although the toilets could use some improvement, it's still a highly recommended spot for a delicious lunch of cheese and charcuterie in a beautiful, quiet location near the castle.
Breathtaking view of Loches Fabulous food and service What a find! A unique restaurant within the historic walled city of Loches where you dine under a shady ivy covered terrace. Fresh, well cooked and presented cuisine that is perfect for summer. Excellent service and an overall enjoyable experience We will be back

Very nice place to sit in the shade and eat a small meal with superb views over the old church and the surrounding countryside of Loches. Salads are big and taste good. Service is excellent. The toilets however are very basic and can be improved upon, therefore 4 stars instead of 5.
Cees W — Google review
Awful service. I asked for a lemonade and they brought me some soda in a bottle, nothing to do with a lemonade. I would have appreciated just to be told in advance and let me decide what I wanted. Not to mention that they say their restaurant is opened all day long and when we went for lunch at 15:00 we were told that we can only have desert because the restaurant is opened, but the kitchen is closed. How DOES THIS make any sense, people? Are you really thinking about the people reading your website? When you say "restaurant opened" means you can eat there, right? Well, it seems not. Restaurant opened and kitchen opened are 2 different things. At least change the description if you don't want to mislead clients. So my recommendation is to avoid them. They are taking advantage of the idyllic location just to scam the tourists. If you like the spot, there are benches there in the garden where you can only seat.
Apetrei R — Google review
Super low service, I don’t think it’s normal that two menus out of 6 which are not available after sitting 20mins, and I still don’t have my knife when typing this comment here. Pls don’t come here again

i really dont recomend this restaurant. Sorry!! Too big price for the food without taste and soo small plates. You get little part of meat, two potatoes and half leave of salad with vinegret. Rental Camping La Citadelle is situated in a beautifully landscaped garden near the medieval city of Loches. It's an ideal spot for a family holiday, with its perfect location within walking distance to the town and easy access to the stunning sights of the Loire Valley. The campsite offers a great pool for both adults and children, as well as clean facilities. Guests appreciate the spacious and sunny pitches, while also noting that the place becomes very quiet after 10 pm.
Great family holiday. We stayed for 10 nights at this campsite which suited us perfectly. Location was perfect within walking distance to the town and easy access to beautiful loire valley sightseeing. The pool was perfect for our small children and while we didn't need to use it there was a large indoor pool also. Pitch no 27 was perfect, spacious and sunny. Places goes very quite from 10pm onwards which was also fine for us but may not suit everyone. Toilets and showers spotlessly clean. All in all we had a lovely holiday and would highly recommend this campsite. We will return.
Fiona W — Google review
Pros: This is a great location, within the actual town. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The bar is great with good food at reasonable prices. Cons: Some pitches are small in the premium area (on pitch shower and kitchen). Multiple instances of people not being able to fit their tent on. Main issue and why I wouldn't stay again: Absolutely riddled with mosquitos. Day and night!
Timothy G — Google review
We stayed in an Executive 3 berth with a hot tub which was new and very well equipped, however the site itself was very disappointing and I think we would have left it we had been in any other of the accommodation types. Everything like looked very tired and run down and it looked nothing like the pictures on the website. It is definitely not a 4 star site, it's probably closer to a 2 star. The general store consisted of around 15 items in reception. The restaurant on site requires you to collect your own cutlery and return the plates after, I have never seen this at a 4 star site especially when the restaurant had 5 staff working, and spent most of the time stood around. We paid nearly €1800 for our weeks stay which is incredibly overpriced for the services that were offered, the main pool was out of action for the first few days and nobody bothered to reach out and tell us.
Shaun D — Google review
Ah what a shame. We loved the town of Loches, with its beautiful architecture, independent bars, restaurants and shops, and an amazing market on the Saturday! However, the campsite isn’t good enough to warrant a paid return visit. Well use a local free aire instead. We’ve stayed at dozens of campsites and pitches across France and this is one of the most disappointing. The cost is relatively high (but perhaps appropriately high given the location) yet the campsite is let down by poor communication and toilet block cleanliness. There are lots of little issues too (listed below) that let the whole campsite down and mean we wouldn’t return. Despite feeling uncomfortable doing so, I felt they deserved to know so I gave feedback to reception and was told it wasn’t their fault! An apology and further questions to help them improve things would have been nice! Regarding the toilet blocks they said they “clean them three times a day but people are just dirty”. Most campsites don’t struggle with this! They need a change in attitude, or possibly the team. Pros: Walking distance to beautiful town of Loches Quiet Big pitches if you pay for premium pitch Pool Water slide good (when working) Bouncy castle and play area Lovely bar staff Decent beers and wines at reasonable prices Home made pizza - we didn’t eat any but saw the dough being made(!) Cons: Very poor communication from reception on multiple issues - locations and availability of facilities, not telling us things weren’t working until we complained about them, when given feedback saying “it’s not our fault” etc… Dirty shower and toilet facilities that are not cleaned deeply or regularly enough Cold showers Washing machines not working (only one was, which we only found out after complaining at reception that it wasn’t working… yet no sign had been put on machine, nor were we told which machines worked when buying the tokens(!) Water slide wasn’t working first day (no information about it though), but was working second day Quite a lot of mosquitoes so we got a lot of bites Kids Karts are 5 EUR per hour making them nearly pointless as it’s rare my kids want to use it solidly for an hour - other campsites provide these free Relatively high cost of washing machine (5 EUR per wash is double paid elsewhere) Non-premium plots look small and lack privacy Entertainment board perhaps a bit sparse(!)
Alexis K — Google review
Stayed at this site on the way up through France. Had been warned that it had gone downhill since being taken over but it was worse than expected. When we turned up we asked if there was a serviced pitch available. Was told no so they gave us a pitch number. When we found it it was under water and you would not have put animals on it. Went back to reception who then came up with a better pitch and when we got to it it was serviced.!!!!. The best pitches on the site have now been taken over by a Dutch tent company. Overall the site looked very neglected. The only bright spot were the Pizzas in the restaurant which were superb.
Andrew S — Google review
We stayed here in 2020 amidst the pandemic and it seemed far better then. The staff were really welcoming and very helpful as before but the facilities, other than the swimming pool area, felt rundown and in need of some repair and upgrading. The WiFi which was available across the whole site before is now limited to the reception area. However, our pitch was lovely, very spacious and with the requested shade. The saddest part is that despite it being quite busy for June, the takeaway/café remains closed until the 1st July, even at weekends which is a real shame and lets it down.
Chris H — Google review
This site could be so much better . There’s no doubt it’s location is the overriding factor being a 10 min walk into beautiful Loches but that’s where it ends We booked a premium emplacement to give us a private toilet n shower as we’ve been on the road a while . While the actual facilities were spotless and I think new the pitch was appalling- a muddy small corner , infact pitches 7-15 are tiny . Pitches 2-6 are so much better and with a lovely view but facilities are older so not sure why the site doesn’t spruce these up . I hate to think how crammed 7-15 would be when full The whole site is scruffy with overgrown weedy pitches , and needs a good mowing and weeding A shame as it could be lovely it just looks and feels unloved . Lady on reception was lovely This has been the worst site of our trip so far

Quiet Fun Place for Kids in a Great Location. We arrived around 3 and had pick of several great tent locations. We settled down by the playground and pool area and the kids had a blast (covered pool is nice and warm). Good mix of French and English so our kids had a little language training and everyone was quite friendly. The town is very picturesque and it's a great spot to hit up local vineyards- DEFINITELY worth going to the Monmousseau Caves with the kids- the light show is fantastic and free wine tasting! The sanitary blocks were all outdoors, but kept clean and never too busy. We even enjoyed an Irish Band night with dancing! It quieted down at night so it was just perfect for a family trip to the Loire Valley.

Already disappointed that the confectionery is only made during the week because when we work, it's not possible to go there during the week and the young saleswoman is not friendly and cold, she makes me pay an extra €2 and no response to my email. to that. (Translated by Google) A very pleasant visit to an artisanal confectionery in Loches. It's quick but efficient, and ideal for young children. We visited with our 5-year-old granddaughter, who thoroughly enjoyed it! We begin with a film about the origin and preparation of the sugar used, then move on to the workshop, where the young owner clearly and playfully explains how the lollipops and other sweets are made. He then invites adult volunteers and children to make their own lollipops, which they are then happy to take home! And finally, a visit to the shop is a pleasant end to the visit! Note: the staff, just like the owner, are warm and friendly. We've already planned to return with our 6-year-old grandson this week.

Monument
The Porte Royale is a significant gateway that grants access to various historical sites such as the collegiate church, the keep, the royal residence, and the Lansyer house museum. This city holds a remarkable heritage that has been well-preserved, evoking deep emotions and offering valuable insights. Notably, this door was once used by Joan of Arc herself. Having visited in 2017, there are plans to return in 2020 to further explore this magnificent monument.
(Translated by Google) This defensive gate is currently the only access to the medieval fortress. A first door from the 11th century was replaced at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century by the monumental gate formed by two round towers pierced with arrow slits. In the 15th century, the appearance of gunpowder artillery necessitated a redevelopment: the roof and gangway were removed in favor of a fire terrace, surrounded by battlements on consoles. (Terrace open during the opening hours of the Lansyer Museum, free entry) (Original) Aquesta porta defensiva és actualment l'únic accés a la fortalesa medieval. We who love nature and animals could not help but be seduced by his paintings which gave us the impression of meeting someone who was familiar to us. It was a very pleasant and relaxing visit. It should be noted that the explanations and educational materials are very well done, including a short summary in simple language that is easy to understand for children or people learning French. The surroundings of the museum are charming with a magnificent view of the city. And to top it all off, we appreciated the warm and professional welcome. Everything was perfect! I was not informed before paying, or before entering the closed pool area. I was in a stupid position and they were kind of strict and... We managed somehow but I felt ashamed and got very stressed

Pizzeria Trattoria mauvieres

Italian restaurant
I have no hesitation in proclaiming that the pizza at La Trattoria Mauvières is truly the finest I have ever tasted. The dough is exceptional, with a delectable tomato sauce and high-quality Italian ingredients. The proprietors of this establishment are both affable and proficient in their craft. Additionally, the dessert, specifically the mascarpone mousse, is absolutely delightful.
This place is a very unassuming spot. A hole in the wall that you may blink and miss if driving by, but a gem if you take the time to visit. I ordered and received my meal within what felt like 5 minutes. Very fast service. The house special pizza is excellent though I wish I had distributed the gorgonzola from the centre a bit. I eat my pizza from the outside in so my last two bites were overwhelmingly strong. The dessert special was also very tasty. The space is extremely well utilized to give a rustic ambience around its stone structure. The bathroom is well maintained and has a quaint old-world charm. I especially like the use of hand towels, makes it very classy and saves on paper waste.
