Appleby Castle is a charming hotel located within an 11th-century castle, offering complimentary breakfast and guided tours. Guests can also enjoy dining options and afternoon tea on the premises. The castle provides a unique accommodation experience with its historic ambiance and picturesque surroundings in Appleby-in-Westmorland, England. With its rich history and elegant setting, it's an ideal destination for travelers seeking a distinctive stay.
All I can say is wow, I'm 28 and my Fiancée is 26. I booked a stay in Appleby primarily for the spa and link to Edinburgh. I am so glad I booked with the castle, the moment we arrived we were greeted with open arms. We wished to drop a bag off while our room was prepared. But we was told not only was our room upgraded to a private cottage, but we could go in 4 hours early. We was offered a tour, given history to our cottage and shown everything. Our evening meal was astronomical, we first got taken to a private bar area where two other couples were, and waited on every whim. We was then taken to a banqueting room which looked as if we were in Buckingham Palace. Our host lit candle lights for us and made every little moment matter. To then top it off, the host then played the piano for the entire room, of modern and classical songs. I cannot give Appleby Castle 5 stars as it deserves far more, if you are contemplating staying here then book it straight away. Every moment was captures perfectly here and it made our entire year.

My husband and I stayed in the castle for two nights. Our experience was wonderful! This place is full of history in every corner , I couldn’t believe I was reading my book in the great hall where Lady Ann Clifford used to walk. Our room had 17th century beds as well as tapestries! Of course it has uneven floors and old features, but it is the charmed of this place. You are not buying a luxury stay, you are buying the experience of staying in a real medieval castle. We have stayed in other castles in the past , but this one is definitely the most authentic one. The food was very good , the staff very friendly, Craig in the restaurant/bar was great. We also highly recommend to visit the Norman tower , it is a very interesting museum where you learn more about the history of the castle. The owner of the hotel , Sally is wonderful! Full of energy and a great hostess. We really enjoyed our chats with her and we wish her all the best! We recommend this charming place if you want to be back in history!

A Magical Night in History My family and I had the incredible opportunity to spend a night in the State Suite at Appleby Castle, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the warm hospitality - meeting the owner personally made our stay feel even more special and welcoming. The castle itself is absolutely stunning and impeccably maintained. Staying in the State Suite felt like stepping back in time, yet with all the modern comforts needed for a comfortable night’s rest. The historical atmosphere was perfectly preserved, giving our children an amazing chance to experience living history firsthand. What made the experience even more memorable was exploring the castle grounds and wandering through the charming village nearby. The kids were fascinated by every corner, and as parents, we loved watching them discover and engage with the rich history surrounding us. The attention to detail in maintaining both the castle and the rooms is evident throughout. It’s clear that great care is taken to preserve this magnificent piece of history while ensuring guests have a wonderful stay. We’re incredibly grateful to the owner for this unique experience. Thank you ☺️

Stayed in 1 of the cottages for 2 nights with family. The staff were amazing and went above and beyond to ensure my mum had a wonderful birthday. Nothing was too much trouble. The view from the Norman Keep was stunning and lovely walks around the grounds. Thank you Mrs Nightingale!

I visited Appleby Castle to see the tower grounds and tearooms. On arrival at the gate there was no one on duty at the cabin to pay. Only a QR code to pay we did this and were charged £10 each. Walking up into the Castle area it was totally devoid of any staff. We went to the tower to gain access everything was locked. We searched around and couldn't see any signage or anyone to ask for help. After 40mins we saw someone who we asked and told him we had paid our £10. He asked for our proof and openness the tower, he just sent us in no real explanation other than be careful the steps are steep. We noticed as we went around the exhibition there were signs for an audio tour something we were not offered. The exhibition was good and the views were great. When we came down we wanted to enjoy the tearoom as advertised when we booked online. However yet again no signage, no staff when we tried the hotel reception to ask the doors were locked. A very very disappointing venue to visit.

St Anne’s Hospital, founded in 1653 by Lady Anne Clifford, is a historic building that has provided housing for spinsters and widows for centuries. The stone arch at the entrance and the courtyard transport visitors to a bygone era. The almshouses are reminiscent of those in Bruges and offer a peaceful atmosphere with a quaint chapel and beautiful gardens. Visitors can admire the well-kept cottages, vibrant flowers, and serene surroundings while experiencing the hospitality of the residents.
I live here at St.Anne"s, just love it. So happy x

Beautiful - well kept and flowers in abundance with the chapel open for you to see and take pictures
Carole P — Google review
It was well worth the walk to the top of Appleby's steep main street to see these delightful 17th century almshouses enclosing a cobbled courtyard. The cottages are so neat and beautifully kept by their current residents and there's a profusion of lovely flowers. The quiet little chapel was open, was welcome to go inside and take a look.
Valerie H — Google review
Whenever I go to Appleby I always pop in through the gates to view the almshouses. They are historic and incredibly peaceful and remind me of the almshouses in Bruges. There is a calm quiet peace to be found in the little chapel in the corner which is lovely and often open. Then walk across the courtyard and see the beautiful garden and orchard through the gates.

I love this place. It has a tiny chapel, lovely gardens and borders and we met a very friendly resident. Well worth stopping for.

Popped in for a look around and got some cards and prints. Spotted something I wanted to get for my partners birthday but she was with me at the time. I emailed the gallery and Andrew very kindly helped me identify what I was after and sent it to me first class. Really lovely place, with brilliant staff!

Great shop and super friendly, helpful owner. We left with some lovely art. Highly recommend you check this gallery out. Great looking cafe, good prices and great service. 10/10.

Gorgeous little gallery and cafe in the heart of Appleby. Lots of affordable, original works by local artists, plus books, cards and more. Definitely worth a visit!
Tim H — Google review
Sadly it’s the worst coffee we have ever had. Could not even drink it all. In hindsight should have complained on the day but the guy serving was very rude regarding our dogs, and just wanted to make a quick exit.
Mariana M — Google review
Make sure to visit the Gallery if you're ever in Appleby! There's a great selection of locally produced art and gifts available, as well as a brilliant spot for tea/coffee and a slice of cake. They stock gluten free cake too so that's always a bonus! Andrew is super helpful and can also do some digging into your family tree if you'd like! Will definitely be returning. Plenty of parking on the road outside, or a good selection of car parks a short walk away. There is a short flight of stairs to get in.
Badger — Google review
The man serving in the shop wasn't very friendly. While we were there, my husband had to take a call from the cancer clinic at our hospital. Whoever was serving wasn't happy about us taking the call on the balcony of the cafe/shop despite the fact that there was nobody else there. He said we would have to move if somebody wanted to sit there for coffee. It just didn't feel nice being there. It's a beautiful little place though, probably delightful for art lovers!
Hazel S — Google review
What an absolute fine, just go through the passage into a small courtyard. Up the outdoor stairs to the small cafe andgallery/shop. Best and cheapest tea we purchased £1.90, presented in beautiful teapots etc. Home baking was spot on. Dog friendly. Please note they do not appear to have toilet facilities.

Alison, at the Appleby Tourist Information Centre (TIC), is an incredibly charming and helpful individual. The TIC provides a wealth of information on the Eden Valley and its surrounding areas, including various trips and activities. Additionally, there are numerous gifts and souvenirs available for purchase. The TIC itself is housed in the ancient Moot Hall building, which holds historical significance and is worth visiting.

Conveniently located in the historic Moot Hall right in the middle of the main street. The two ladies were very friendly and knowledgeable and gave me all the information I needed to enjoy my short visit to Appleby. Plenty of leaflets about local events and places of interest, plus a little gallery with some nice pottery, glassware, scarves and other gifts/souvenirs.

Alison, in the TIC, is the most charismatic and helpful person you could ever wish to meet 😊 There were 3 of us, all visiting Appleby because our name is Appleby, and she couldn't have been more helpful. She made our trip very special. There's lots of information to be had about Eden Valley and surrounding areas, trips, days out etc. Lots of gifts and souvenirs on sale too. The little building that houses the TIC, Moot Hall, is also a very ancient building and worth a visit. If you're lucky and the Mayor of Appleby is there, you can sometimes get a guided visit of Moot Hall if your name's Appleby, and you also get to sign the Visitors' Book along with Applebys from all over the world. Thank you Alison 😍

An unplanned visit to Mark at The Colour Makers House resulted in us purchasing some of his amazing art work. He is a friendly chap who was easy to talk to about his art and the traditional paint / pigment making he does on the premises. These paint sets would make ideal and unique gifts. Thanks Mark.

It's one of the highlights to try in nearby villages, offering a delightful dining experience. With its picturesque setting and delicious menu featuring local and international dishes, Crown & Cushion Inn is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a warm welcome and an unforgettable culinary journey.
My family and I recently had the pleasure of dining at Crown & Cushion Inn, and it exceeded our expectations in every way. This charming establishment delivered exactly what you’d hope for from a quality pub restaurant. The star of our meal was undoubtedly the fish and chips - absolutely amazing and cooked to perfection. The fish was flaky and fresh with a golden, crispy batter that had just the right amount of crunch. The chips were equally impressive, perfectly seasoned and with that ideal balance of fluffy interior and crispy exterior that’s so hard to achieve. We also tried the burger, which was another standout dish. The patty was juicy and flavorful, cooked exactly as requested, and served with fresh accompaniments that complemented rather than overwhelmed the main event. It’s clear the kitchen takes pride in their craft. What really rounded out the experience was the decent, attentive staff who made us feel welcome throughout our visit. They were professional without being intrusive, and you could tell they genuinely cared about ensuring we had a good time. Thank you

A busy pub on a Friday night. Lovely old building well sited at the bottom of the high street. The menu has a huge choice of foid to suit all tastes. Service was quick considering the number of people already there. The food was very good and portions generous. We didn't make desserts.

Cushion Burger is the best burger I have had for years. Meat was perfectly cooked, bun was perfectly toasted so was crisp while staying soft and light, the cheese was amazing and the chips were crispy while fluffy. Amazing service as well we had a wonderful experience would highly recommend

This is a Gem in Appleby, we will return soon , and fully recommend.

This restaurant manages to produce beautiful food with a modern twist on traditional recipes. Flavours are perfectly balanced, meaning that even spicy dishes are not overwhelmed. Presentation of each dish is really professional and standards are high. The team members were incredibly friendly - attentive without being obtrusive. Appleby is lucky to have a restaurant of this standard, and we’d love to visit again!

Really great atmosphere, really good food, lovely service. We tried four different curries that were adapted to our taste and other than mine being a tad too sweet (I should have asked about it initially, it's not their fault) it was all honestly really marvellous. I actually liked my partner's and my mom's dishes more than my own, but I'll just know what to order next time :) We'll be coming back.

Tucked away in the quiet charm of Appleby-in-Westmorland, this unassuming Indian restaurant proved to be a true hidden gem. With no grand expectations upon arrival—just a casual dinner during a short countryside stay—we left thoroughly impressed. The service was warm and attentive from the outset, setting the tone for what would become a genuinely memorable meal. The menu included the classics as well as a refreshing departure from the usual fare - a thoughtful mix of house specials and creative fusion dishes that hinted at the passion and confidence of the respective chefs. Each dish arrived beautifully plated and unmistakably fresh, with vibrant spices and carefully balanced flavours that spoke of quality ingredients and skillful preparation. It was clear that nothing had been rushed or reheated—the food had been freshly prepared to order. Throughout the evening, the waiting staff and owner checked in with genuine care, striking the balance of attentiveness without intrusion. If you find yourself in the area, this restaurant is well worth seeking out. We’ll certainly be returning on our next visit.

A great place to stay! We booked here for a wedding in the weekend. The rooms were really spacious and the bed was super comfortable. Everything you needed was supplied in the rooms and the breakfast in the morning was really lovely too- you could tell it was all local and good quality produce. Staff were fab and welcoming. If you ever visit Appleby in Westmorland, for the night, long weekend or week, you have to stay at the Royal Oak Hotel. We stayed a week and the food was delicious, drink was reasonably priced as was the great food. Staff couldn’t have been anymore helpful and courteous. Our dog even had a back garden to run in if required and it was next to our room if we needed to let him out during the night. Loads of different locations to visit within easy driving of the hotel. Couldn’t recommend the place highly enough. We’ll definitely be back. Lewis & Susan from Hamilton, Scotland.

The hike is filled with beautiful scenery including small streams, waterfalls, and rocky paths.
Brilliant walk. Long steady climb, then walking along the edge of the valley to the end. Fantastic views.

Been wanting to walk this route for over 2 years with my 3 mates, finally we walked it and boy was it worth the wait I’d highly recommend you do this walk, 9.66miles for the car park 10/10

High cup nick was a super day out for us. We parked in dufton and walked from there. We went through all weathers: sun rain and wind. The climb was quite steep in parts and we had three small breaks on the way up. We didn't quite make it to the end because it seemed a bit too steep and rocky for our mad dog. We still had wonderful views from the top. It took us about 3 hours up and 1,5 back down. (We are not professional hikers and we're getting on a bit). We met a few people on the way but not many so it was a very peaceful walk. I can highly recommend it.

Great easy circular 4 hour hike here from Dufton car park with some amazing views. Few boggy places and temperamental weather but safe paths as long as dont go right to the edge if windy or wet.
Chris G — Google review
Absolutely stunning place to walk. We headed over to High Cup Nick. Headed up the middle, bit of a slog over wet moorland, then a great scramble over boulders to the top. Amazing views from the top. Fantastic scenery all day. We added Murton Pike onto the walk too. Long walk but worth it.
Donna W — Google review
Always a stunner, no matter the time of year. The best view of the Lake District is from the Pennines!
Nicola G — Google review
Absolutely fantastic views. Quite a walk to get there. We parked in Dufton but you can knock a couple of miles off by parking at the end of the lane instead
Paul A — Google review
Had a lovely hike during Easter weekend with a gorgeous weather. Scenery was amazing on the way and mesmerising views in front of you when close to the valley. Lovely small streams and waterfalls along the way with rocky paths, would recommend comfortable footwear and warm cloths as it might get colder closer to the valley. We parked the car at public car park but limited spaces but can park along the road as well. Highly recommended for a great stroll with a lovely views of Yorkshire dales.

Just visited H&H this weekend for a couple of nights on our way home from Glasgow. Great, great little pub. Staff and I presume the landlady so friendly, atmosphere was fantastic. As for the locals, like been in my local, funny friendly people that were having a drink and making us laugh. Thank you for having such a great boozer, I’ll be back for more!

We were in Appleby on a coach trip so couldn't spend too long in a pub. I like good cask beers and it didn't look great. The lady behind the bar put a good one on for me specially and made us feel so welcome. Wish all pubs could be so friendly and welcoming. Well done, this pub is the best in Appleby. John and Theresa.

A lovely, friendly little pub in which the excellent, welcoming staff really know how to keep and serve cask-conditioned ale.

Had the steak pie 🥧 chips & veg. It was delicious, loads of steak in the homemade pie & fresh veg (not frozen). Will definitely be returning on my next visit to Cumbria. The lady on the bar was lovely too. 10 out of 10. Thank-you.

Lovely little local pub, fabulous service, wonderful seats in the sunshine. Definitely worthwhile stopping for a beer or 3 or maybe 4 😉. Not many like this about these days.

Fantastic friendly staff who care about all those who are using the gym and pool. They are so encouraging and I can't recommend the swim teachers highly enough.

Always super clean, helpful staff and fantastic swimming teachers. This is a gem of a pool.

Daughter has swimming lessons here. Staff are attentive, great with the kids. Never had a negative experience always willing to help and answer questions. I will always remember the pool when it was an open air pool when I was my daughter's age! Along time ago. Gym is well equipped for the size of the center and it's rural location. Well done. Keep up the hard work. 👌🏻💪🏻

Nice clean pool with helpful staff. Only negative was trying to book online would not let me . Went to reception and payed and went straight in no problem. Might be different if really busy.

This is a lovely pool: simple, clean, well thought out facilities run by a thoughtful, lovely team. I visited for the first time and was given a little tour so that I knew where everything was. Thanks!
Julie S — Google review
Great to have in such a small location staff were really friendly and helpful, their lockers don't take the new pounds but they lent me one of those tokens that did the job, there is individual changing blocks rather than male and female, it loses a star as I couldn't have a proper shower as they are pool side, good for a rinse.
Neil N — Google review
Just finished a 2pm swim session. My first since last March 2020 and my first at Appleby. Lovely pool, nice and clean. Very poor welcome. Young msn sitting in office behind counter chatting to young female staff. No one on counter. I walked past and he noticed me. I said I have a 2 pm booking which he confirmed and I booked in. He then went back to the office to continue his chat. It would have been more welcoming had he asked if I'd bern here before, as then perhaps, he may have quickly covered Covid rules in the pool and changing rooms, one way systems, take all belongings to the poolside, location of changing rooms, locker routine etc. Ha.......aybe I'm expecting too much?

St. Lawrence's Church, located in Appleby, is an active Anglican parish church with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The church features stunning Norman and English gothic architecture and is home to striking tombs honoring Lady Anne and her mother, Lady Margaret. The building itself is a sight to behold, with notable features such as the 'Frosterley marble' displaying fossils and an old organ worth exploring.
St Lawrence Church is such an amazing place. The welcome you receive is priceless, honest, and warm. You're met as soon as you enter this peaceful place. You are warmly invited to take a seat and enjoy a cuppa with the parishioners and vicar. Pop in the welcome is amazing.
Alex W — Google review
A fine, solid and characterful ancient church. It has kept so much of its original features that get a real sense of place. It poses history. It is also a vibrant community hub by the looks of things. I would certainly worship here. 🙏
Vince — Google review
St. Lawrence's is a wonderful Anglican church with a history dating as far back as the 12th century. While the building itself is worthy of study, there are many other aspects of interest, including the "Frosterley marble" (actually black limestone...) which holds many fossils in its polished surface. The old organ is well worth a closer look too, and the stained glass windows are too good to miss.

Beautiful church. So peaceful
Marion M — Google review
St Lawrence Church is well worth a visit and a walk about. There are interesting memorial plaques and the seating is in family pews rather than open seats. Enjoy the stain glass widows presentations and have a look at some of the well caved tombstones. Also be informed that George Washington the first President of USA’s father and brothers worshiped in the church

Very friendly. Great that they allow dogs to attend too.

A lovely calm and quiet place to get away from the pressures of life. Friendly and helpful staff. Wheelchair access. Toilets, including disabled. Very pleasant to relax and chill down out of the hot summer sun.

St Lawrence's is an amazing place of peace with a warm welcoming feel much has been done to bring the church into the 21 century And it's all credit to the PCC and church wardens who strive hard to keep this beautiful church alive For generations to come to enjoy Please Support your local church Because when there gone ! So is the soul of the place they represent ! Long live St Lawrence's

Exellent authentic halal Pakistani and Indian food , owners are Originally from Bradford , Top service by staff , food served on warm plates and very reasonably priced. Almost better then most London restaurants I’ve been too. Worth the journey 👍🏼

It's ok. But being from London I am used to very different types of indian food. It is never as good up north, not sure if it's to cater for the local taste of if they just do it different. Service was friendly and the food was well cooked and hot.

Food was spot on should book a table if you thinking off going we had to wait 2 hours for a table but was well worth the wait. Staff was very friendly and welcoming

Excellent 'Authentic' Indian food. This was our second trip to Appleby, and dinner here was a must, same good friendly and helpful service. Good value, we had Starters and Mains with extras and still just over £30 for two. Very busy with delivery orders so locals are obviously impressed too. Restaurant opens at 5. No alcohol sold but plenty choice of soft drinks.
Pamela D — Google review
Visited on a Friday evening, the place was very quiet with only 3 other diners, however there was a steady stream of takeaway customers. The decor and atmosphere is welcoming and the staff are very nice and efficient. The food was great and very tasty with plenty of choice, I would definitely return.
John V — Google review
The food was average. Service was poor- the staff were shouting in the kitchen and were not attentive.
Nimalan R — Google review
Quality food and friendly service. Very flavourful dishes that were of a good size and price. I’ve eaten at quite a few Indian restaurants and this is up there with the best I’ve been to. Will certainly be returning.

This was our first and we will definitely go back. The bistro is well set out with plenty of space around the tables and nice decor. There are accessible restroom facilties and changing facilities. The menus is varied and the food freshly prepared. Very nice coffee and a selection of homemade cakes. Thw lady that served us was very pleasant.

Staff great and nice tidy place. Worst cup of tea I have ever had. 1 teabag in a giant pot asked for another teabag, but must have been cheap quality tea. All cakes and scones are very dry. Visited as a group of six, and only one of us were happy with their meal.

Very nice sandwich, home made chips and creamy coleslaw. Quick friendly service. Thanks

No space outside but loads inside. We all got bacon and egg butties and they were great. Coffee were good. Bikes leaned up against the window! Friendly and helpful staff.... what more do you want to know!

Food was lovely and a standard price. Atmosphere was good and it was in a good location near the bridge and Eden river. However, the service was pretty poor. No choices were offered regarding people with specific diet needs and only through overhearing conversations at the table, a waiter made some comments.. just not the best way to go about hospitality and customer service.

2 visits during our few days in the area . Great service and excellent food. Sunday roast is a must 👍
Stewart R — Google review
Really lovely friendly cafe. Excellent value for money. I had jacket potato and beans and my husband had toasted BLT. Both were really yummy and came with side salad and chips. Personally the coffee wasn’t to my liking, but would definitely come here again. Excellent pit stop on a long journey from Nottingham to Glasgow
Megan R — Google review
We booked a table for lunch which was a good idea as it was pretty busy. They took a long time to take our order and bring the food, but there was only one lady dealing with the tables and was run ragged so I can't complain as she was working really hard. The food was good, except I asked for the chips to be well done and crispy (I hate soggy chips) but sadly everyone's chips were very pale and soggy including mine which was a bit disappointing. It's a sweet little cafe with a small garden sitting area, and the range of food is great, ranging from snacks to full meals (pies, burgers, scampi etc), There were a few veggie options, and fish choices as well as a kids menu. There is no parking but the town centre parking is nearby so there shouldn't be too much of an issue if visiting by car.
