Mercado Les Halles de St Jean de Luz is a lively and traditional market offering a fantastic selection of fresh produce, cheese, wines, seafood, and regional specialties. The impeccably clean venue features stalls selling local delicacies like Gateau Basque and gourmet foods such as foie gras. Visitors can find an array of products from fresh meats to seafood, baked goods, and honey-based cosmetics.
What an amazing market. Fresh local food everywhere. Anything you may want is here. Fresh stawberries were delicious. Highly recommend.

It was very busy. Lots of fresh produce and tempting, waistline increasing delicacies. If you want to get something for lunch, do it well before 1 pm.
Motorhome Q — Google review
A nice indoor market with vegetables, meat, fish and various other stalls. Open until lunch time. Very busy on the Friday when all the stalls are open. Not so busy on other days where some of the stalls are not open. On the Friday additional stalls open up outside. We ate some oysters at the Buvette de La Halle with a glass of wine. They were very tasty

Great central market with lots to see. Make sure to have a meal at Buvette de la Halle. It's located in one of the corners. Some of the freshest shellfish and seafood that you will ever taste.
Jeffrey B — Google review
It's not a big market but what a fabulous selection they have! Beautiful place, impeccably clean with a good choice of excellent local products. From fresh meats to seafood, freshly baked cakes, pastries and other local delicacies all under one roof. What a great way to shop! Not to forget cheese and wine. I highly recommend.

Right in the center of Saint Jean de Luz, this typical French market has all the local delicacies and traditional food you can find in such places: fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, meat, fish, cold cuts, aperitifs and so on! It's both indoor and outdoor, with plenty of food stall outside.

Fine dining restaurant
Le Kaiku, located at 17 Rue de la Republique, is a top choice for food enthusiasts seeking contemporary Basque cuisine. Chef Nicolas Borombo's background includes experience at prestigious Parisian establishments before opening this Michelin-starred restaurant in Saint Jean-de-Luz. The menu offers a modern fusion of Basque and Japanese influences, featuring a Discovery Menu priced at 78. Additionally, the restaurant boasts an elegant timber-beamed dining room that complements the artfully styled dishes.
My parents took me here for my birthday lunch and it was incredible! We had the set menu for 59euros, and it was amazing. Portions were good sized, and we left feeling full. There was a good wine selection as well, and helpful sommelier. The plates were so beautiful and it we spend a fantastic moment.
Eva — Google review
Food, Service, Ambiance, Wine were exceptional. This restaurant definitely deserves its Michelin star rating.
Justin S — Google review
Wonderful experience. Staff were so accommodating. I cannot speak a lick of French and they were gracious in helping my family through the process of enjoying lunch.
Trevor C — Google review
Fantastic food and service, dogs are welcome even for dinner , price / quality as expected with the kind of the restaurant. I loved the dessert ( sufle lemoncello) but my partner didn’t like it (he is French) I usually eat meat medium + but they served something else still delicious and was able to eat it. Recommend.
Paola L — Google review
Beautiful setting for delicious food. We had the 120 euro menu and were not disappointed. I think we had 8 courses overall and each one was interesting, a work of art on the plate and a delight for the senses. I couldn't fault it at all. My only comment would be that they need to offer better steak knives, I saw that other tables, like us, struggled a little but that really is being picky. We went for a romantic meal for two and were not disappointed. No dress code either which for a Michelin star in a hot destination was welcomed. Thank you. Service was 10/10. Our bill was 300 for 2 x 120 evening meal menus, a bottle of wine and coffee.
Joanne A — Google review
A really brilliant place with inventive recipes mixed with the traditional. The veal starter was delicious but the best dish of all was the langoustines, a real show stopper.
J T — Google review
Le Kaiku was a wonderful experience in Saint Jean de Luz. The lunch menu was an exquisite choice, beginning with the complimentary starters and following with proper and tasty starters composed ok mackerel and caramelized tomatoes. Main courses were excellent, specially the risotto. Desserts were baked in heaven. All was cooked to make us return.

French restaurant
Mediterranean restaurant
CHEZ MATTIN, located in the fishing port of Ciboure, offers a seasonal menu featuring creative Basque dishes with a focus on seafood. The rustic and traditional ambiance of the restaurant takes diners back to simpler times. The daily chalkboard menu showcases the best products from both the green hills of Payes Basques and the day's catch from Ciboure, France's second most important fishing port.
Dinner at Chez Mattin near the harbor in St Jean de Luz. Anthony Bourdain said "if you only have time for one meal, this is probably the one" and we couldnt agree more. A small family restaurant run by Chef Michel in the kitchen and his wife Céline in the front of house. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood near the harbor, a small unassuming entrance leads you into a comfortable dining room that feels like you could be in someone's home. As the evening progressed the restaurant filled mainly with locals, repeat guests we assumed due to their greeting by the owners. The food was exceptional with seafood as the focus. the scallops and sole were were perfectly cooked, and their famous Ttoro (a traditional Basque fish soup) was outstanding.
Bondiamo — Google review
We really enjoyed the food and service at this authentic restaurant. The fish was absolutely fresh and delicious. The chocolate desert was to die for. The service was exceptionally friendly. Easy 5 stars.
Bieke H — Google review
Hidden culinary gem for those seeking to try authentic French Basque cuisine. My partner and I went without a reservation on a Thursday afternoon at around 1pm (this was our fault as we decided to do a spontaneous road trip and explore the French Basque region) and it was completely packed. However, instead of turning us down, our host Céline explained that while they were extremely busy at the moment, a table could be arranged for us if we were open to the idea of waiting. We were then offered a couple of seats outside the establishment and Céline followed up with a couple of menus and some refreshments.snacks. The latter was a really nice gesture as we were both pretty hungry and had no idea how long the wait would be. After a 30-45 minute wait, we were ushered into our seats. From beginning to end, the staff was extremely attentive and friendly. The restaurant was nicely decorated with Basque artefacts and most importantly. the food was very delicious (specially the ttoro and tripes). A neat selection of Basque wines was also available to order. We finished the meal with the riz au lait and a cup of coffee. Upon asking for our bill, we discovered that Céline had decided to comp the refreshments and snacks to compensate for the wait. Overall, we were simply amazed at the team at Chez Mattin for all the steps taken to provide amazing service and spectacular food to two total walk-in strangers in the middle of a weekday. Establishments like these are the entire package and a warm reminder that good hospitality still exists in the food industry. My partner and I can't recommend this place highly enough and we both look forward to the day we get to taste their menu again. PS. Make sure to make a reservation!
Jason W — Google review
Chez Mattin feels like one of those places you just stumble upon and instantly know you’re in for something special. There's no fixed menu here, it’s all about what’s fresh from the market that day. This means every visit is a little different, with dishes that are both locally rooted and adventurous. We tried some truly unforgettable plates, from fresh seafood to creative spins on classic Basque flavors. If you're in Ciboure and looking for something real, unpretentious, and delicious, Chez Mattin is the spot.
S T — Google review
This is the reason I came to France. All the food has been really good, but this was next level. My wife and I shared each course and it was plated individually knowing we were going to share.

The most amazing experience and lunch at Chez MATTIN! I discovered it on a tourism video and it did not disappoint! We went with the intention of having their famous specialty fish stew and wow was it delicious and packed full of seafood! We were also served a complimentary amuse bouche that was very good ! The host and I’m guessing owner was incredibly friendly, great sense of humour and absolutely on top of everything! She was already to attempt to explain the menu to us in English when we said we wanted the fish stew! A huge smile and relief came over her face ! Haha! She suggested the soufflé for dessert which was delicious ! A very friendly restaurant ! Reservations are a must! It was incredible to see the flock to the restaurant and see it absolutely full with minutes of open! Everyone was taken care of by a fabulous group of staff! We also enjoyed a glass of white wine and were pleased to see it was €5.00.

This is my new favorite restaurant in France. It's just a 35-minute drive from the center of San Sebastian (about 15 minutes from Biarritz) and is well worth whatever effort you have to make to visit. Each dish is a feast for the senses, beautiful, flavorful, and well textured. And the sauces were exquisite! To top it all off, the service was excellent. I felt at home from the minute I arrived. A huge thank you to Chef David from Bistro Ondaretta in San Sebastian for the recommendation. I feel positively spoiled to live so close to such wonderful restaurants!

While it is not open for visitation, visitors can still walk up to the fort and admire the Breakwaters and panoramic views of the bay, including sights such as Rhune Hill and Port of Socoa.
One of the best spots in Ciboure, south-west France. We stopped at Fort de Socoa on our way from Biarritz to Hendaye and San Sebastian. There is plenty of parking very close to the fort.

Very nice walk from saint jean to here. Takes roughly an hour. The castle is worn down and you can’t access, but you do get amazing views of the sea wall. The big waves crashing against the wall is well worth a visit and look at. Lots of space and lots of amenities nearby.

It's in ruins and no one is allowed inside. But we can walk upto to the fort and see the Breakwaters. Off the edge, looking into the ocean, you can see the rocks at an angle because of the fault line. There is an amazing view of the bay from here. You see the Rhune Hill and Port of Socoa.

You can't enter. Signs telling you to keep out. Even gates and fences to stop you walking onto the harbour wall. Though there is a way around the fences to save you clinmb over. Views of the town are good. Views of the coast and the interesting rock formation are good.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Hôtel Txoko is a delightful boutique hotel that perfectly captures the essence of Basque charm. With just nine cozy rooms adorned with modern decor and equipped with all the essentials, including air conditioning and complimentary snacks, it offers a warm and inviting atmosphere for guests. Just steps away from the main beach and surrounded by lively streets filled with restaurants, this charming townhouse provides an ideal base for exploring the area.
Lovely charming boutique hotel. Lots of local flavour and charm. Perfectly located on a popular street (but no issues with noise thanks to double glazed windows which also provided a beautiful view!). A stones throw from the beach and nestled in the heart if the city. Also walkable from the train station and free public parking. Looking forward to returning soon.

Nice hotel with friendly staff. A bit hard to park your car (park in the underground parking at the harbour and walk 300 metres). Surrounded by good restaurants and only 50 metres away from the beach.

Lovely boutique hotel in central location right in middle of restaurant area next to beach. Rooms are fantastic-ask for back one as it has a generous balcony to enjoy breakfast served to your room. High tech TV has casting from your mobile iPad or iPhone.

This hotel is very well run by its energetic and most helpful owner Claudette. We loved our room with its large terrace and Basque textiles. The bed was comfortable and we were provided with snacks and water daily during our three night stay. The hotel location is perfect - on “restaurant row” (but quiet at night) and just steps from the beach. Claudette provided great assistance for our car return at Biarritz airport and even booked us a taxi. We definitely hope to return!

Excellent hotel at reasonable price. We stayed there a night, very comfortable beds and super staff. Pierre was very kind and helpful. We could rent surfboards from the place. I would totally recommend and come back!
Arno R — Google review
Excellent! Best real life definition for a cozy room: small, but comfortable, modern decoration, fully equipped. Coffee machine and snacks as compliment. Great bathroom. Air conditioning. On top, staff is so nice and hospitable. I stayed here 18 years ago. Everything has been fully renovated since. So, now it's even better. And all this for a fair price. I will come back. Sooner than in 18 years time! The hotel consists of 9 bedrooms in total. Not sure if all would be double. Location on a pedestrian street, makes it impossible to provide parking service. No kitchen service, but you can pre-order it at a reasonable price (do it before 19h the day before, or you'll miss it, like we did!).

Guests praise the carefully prepared surprise lunch menu and the clear communication between staff and kitchen. With a particular atmosphere close to the sea, Ekaitza stands out for its admirable dishes and honest approach, making it one of the best dining options in Ciboure.
Absolutely delicious and creative work by the chef and his team. We did the suggested wine pairings for each plate, and the complimentary notes hit the mark regardless of the varied ingredients. Professional and still warm, the place runs like a well oiled machine. It’s an excellent treat for a romantic date, or if you have a foodie partner who wants to have his mind blown and his standards raised.

Day 2

Northwest side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with Wowpark, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Château d'Urtubie, visite, parc et activités pour familles au Pays Basque. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

The amusement center Parc d'aventure et paintball Oihana, located in the beautiful Pays Basque region, offers a fantastic tree climbing experience. With friendly and helpful staff, it provides a safe environment for climbers of all levels with its secure hooks. The facility is well-organized and suitable for families, ensuring the safety of children. Although there were some minor issues with a grumpy instructor and a complicated token system for purchasing drinks, overall it was an enjoyable experience.
Our visit to the park was fantastic. The facilities and the equipment are in great condition, and the staff was welcoming and attentive. It’s the perfect spot for friends and family to spend a weekend together. Be sure to join in on the fun!

We had a good time here, well organised and safe for the kids. Instructor was a bit grumpy on the day. Wanted a beer but the token system was way too convoluted.

We've been to many of these parks. And this is definitely one of the better ones. Great gear, friendly people. Nice build up to the more exciting parts. But it's not technical. If you can get over the fear of heights. And in shape, everything is climbing for a bit and another zip line. There are better ones in that regard. But that is not to say it is boring. Just not difficult.

Chateau d'Urtubie is a medieval fortress near the Spanish border, offering traditional rooms with complimentary Wi-Fi. The castle boasts a 6-hectare park, an outdoor pool and is located just 3 km from Saint-Jean-de-Luz beaches. With a rich historical past, the hotel features artifacts passed down through generations of its owner's family. The breakfast in the classic dining room accompanied by classical music is highly recommended.
Excellent combination of history, gardens, folk games. For people who are looking for a change in activities besides going to the beach or shopping. And visiting the place helps paying for the maintenance of this piece of history.

We received a warm welcome from the hosts. The written guide to the charming small chateau was available in many languages as well as online, giving a comprehensive explanation of the history of the chateau and its owners. Highly recommended. The gardens are beautiful and the traditional games were fun for both children and adults.

We had a great dining experience. We drove up from Spain for the day... just to eat some French food. This was exactly the experience I was looking for... Great food in the French countryside. I had a Scotch aperitif, trout starter, lamb main course, and french toast dessert. A couple of more courses and a local french wine were also part of the meal. The staff were very graceful towards us although we could not speak french. Thank you for being so kind to the American tourists!

One of the best restaurants I’ve ever eaten in. I’m from San Sebastián, so I want to think we know food. The food experience of dining at La Ferme Lizarraga was an allrounder, in all senses, the presentation was beautiful, the setting calm and well and the food….the food was exceptional. If I had to be super super picky and comment on something “negative” to compensate, I’d add another couple of hooks to the walls to hang your coat, there were a couple, but not accessible to every table. Otherwise, this is a place where I’ll be sending my friend, family and business partners/clients when they are in the area.

Friendly welcome in a tastefully equipped restaurant. Food was perfect in presentation, taste and originality. The strawberry desert was unbelievably light and good. (Translated by Google) What a shame that the work of the kitchen to enhance each dish is not served by people worthy of a starred restaurant. In terms of cuisine, quality products, a marriage of subtle flavors, mastery of sauces, perfect cooking and a feast for the eyes and taste buds. Room side, not enough staff: no one to welcome us and 30 minutes before we got the menu card; why then postpone reservations? Strange also, no half bottle of red wine on the menu so we opt for glasses of wine: my glass is chipped and I am entitled to the bottom of the bottle with the deposit that goes with it (6 cl sold for €8)! To continue the lack of professionalism, the waiter arrives with his arms full of dirty plates from the next table to come and clear us before dessert: apparently, for them, the service of a starred restaurant and that of a banquet is similar. But that's not all, a classy restaurant so we "make the crumbs"! With his crumb catcher, with a gesture he sweeps them to the ground: it's the first time I've seen that... I also skip over the familiar language of "yeah" instead of "yes". For me, a starred restaurant is the alliance between refined cuisine and professional service, unfortunately, here, only the cuisine is exceptional!

We wanted to get something to drink and we ordered a few cokes. At the begging everything was great. Food was very good. Prices were decent too. Unfortunately it took way too long to be served... 2 hours and 20 minutes to eat main and desserts for 3 people and there were not many tables to be looked after. So sadly quite disappointing.

(Translated by Google) We were disappointed because this restaurant was well rated. We ordered a charcuterie board and the sheep's milk cheese plate to share. They couldn't tell us what the cheeses were. Then, I chose the scallop casserole. The scallops were cooked well. However, the side dishes (gratin dauphinois, leeks and mushrooms) were frozen and the beetroot strips with lamb's lettuce leaves were packaged in a bag. Finally, I find it a shame when they advertise desserts to omit the Basque cake.

(Translated by Google) 18 euros for a very simple salad... sold as a meal salad, it's actually 3 lettuce leaves, 4 radish pieces, 2 peppers, a little guacamole, and a slice of ham... it's for an anorexic's meal! It's worth 10 euros or even 12, but definitely not 18! The pepper pearls? If I mentioned them, they were just two ordinary pieces of pepper. The feta didn't make an impression on me, maybe because there was very little of it, like the rest... I forgot to mention the coffee... I was served a long coffee in a large cup, but they put the same amount in it as in the cup of my tablemate, who had an espresso. On the table, the coffees were listed at 1.40 or 1.50 euros... I paid 1.70 euros! In short, 3 lettuce leaves and 1 slice of serrano cheese...18 euros! There's a new Michelin-starred restaurant in Urrugne! Run away! Definitely head to Buffalo Grill! The bar’s beautiful art deco bas relief is sculpted in a dark wood, creating a warm and familiar atmosphere. The typical basque cuisine is served in charming french bistrot crockery by a professional and friendly staff. We’ve been here everyday and will miss it when our holiday ends.

The menu for lunch was so good! Although it’s full house, the speed of serving is fast and good service.

When you feel let down, it’s often a sign that your expectations were simply too high—and that’s exactly how I feel about this restaurant. To be fair, the food was very good, and the service was pleasant. That said, we personally found the dishes a bit too salty, and the overall pacing of the meal felt quite slow. It took two full hours from the time we were seated to finish the entire course. Interestingly, the local diners—madames and messieurs around us—seemed perfectly at ease, chatting and enjoying their time without any sign of impatience. So perhaps this relaxed tempo is just the norm here. As travelers on a day trip to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, we would have appreciated being able to make better use of our time. But again, none of this is meant as criticism. It all comes down to the fact that we had let our expectations get a bit too high.

Amazing experience. Michelin star quality for a fantastic value. Went for lunch on a Saturday and had the entree+Plat for 23€ which was honestly the best meal I have ever had at a restaurant for this price point. 100% recommend!!!

Lunch is an excellent value for the quality of food we received. Everything was delicious. I think when going in with unrealistic expectations you could be disappointed the ambiance and service but for the dessert alone lunch was worth it but the fish was delicious and so was our starter.

I recently had lunch at this restaurant, and it was not a good experience. The food and service were both very disappointing, especially for a "tasting menu". The problems started early. We were given a very small amount of wine, and the bread came with no butter or oil. Olives were served, but then, without asking, they were taken away before we even got to finish them. The food itself was not good. The starter tasted like mushy cookies, which was strange and not tasty. The fish was bland, and the vegetables that came with it were not seasoned or prepared well. The duck dish was also poor. The duck had no seasoning, the cube of rice was dry and had no salt, and the acidic vegetables on the side didn’t match the rest of the dish. There was also a random piece of fried cheese on the plate that didn’t make sense. There was no sauce to bring the dish together, making everything feel like a mix of random ingredients. The service was another big issue. The waiter wore low-rise jeans with the bottom buttons of his shirt open, and we could clearly see his 'healthy stomach' - this is not something I want to see, especially not while eating. The waitress explained the dishes very quickly in French, which makes sense because it is a restaurant in France. But I heard her speaking English to other customers, and she knew I didn’t speak French, so I don’t understand why she didn’t bother explaining the dishes in English to us. She was in such a hurry that she didn’t give us a chance to ask any questions. Also, not once did anyone ask if I wanted more wine or if they could take my empty glass away. Dessert was the final letdown. It was just chocolate on top of more chocolate, and it was far too sweet with no balance in flavour. It just made me nauseous. The lunch took two hours for just four courses, which would be fine if the food and service were great, but they weren’t. Overall, this "tasting menu" was a total waste of money. The food was badly made, and the service was poor. I would rather burn my money, than eat here again.

Restaurant Arotzenia is a charming and cozy rustic restaurant and bar located in a guesthouse. It offers a warm and typical Basque atmosphere where guests can enjoy a variety of Basque and regional specialties made with fresh ingredients and homemade desserts. The restaurant prides itself on offering great value for the quality of food served. Visitors can expect to savor natural, seasonal products prepared by the owner, along with an excellent selection of wines curated by the staff.
My host at B&B/Hotel/Hostel Amama Baita recommended this restaurant to me. Wonderful place. The hostess Bianca is so friendly and speaks excellent English. I got to try 3 wines before picking one (and they were all very nice!). The food is great. Good fresh products from the region. Would definitely come back here.

This restaurant is precious, and still a bit secret, between Biarritz and Spain. The food is 100% local, often organic, the chef, Antoine, is a genius who cooks fish, meat and vegetables in such a perfect timing that it is a miracle. The ambiance is very friendly, one can get his own plate or help the waiter with the glasses. The wine is all natural or "vin sain" and Bianca, at the bar, helps you choose with a smile and endless patience. The price is right, for they pay the farmers fairly, but also honest considering the quality of the food. Lovely place.
