Arouca in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Arouca, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Arouca attracts visitors with its dramatic mountain scenery and the Arouca Geopark, recognized by UNESCO for its unique geological formations and hiking opportunities. The famous Passadiços do Paiva (Paiva Walkways) and the 516 Arouca suspension bridge offer striking views over the river gorge. In town, the historic Arouca Monastery anchors a compact center with museums and traditional granite architecture. The area is also known for regional cuisine, including Arouquesa beef and rich convent sweets tied to the monastery’s heritage.
With favorites like Praça Brandão de Vasconcelos, Tasquinha da Quinta, and Tasquinho do Parque, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Café Arouquense and Tasquinha da Quinta so you can get the best taste of Arouca while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Lookouts
Passadiços do Paiva Trailhead (Areinho) offers a stunning 5.5-mile wooden walkway along the Paiva River, providing breathtaking views of the valley. The well-maintained 8km trail allows for side-by-side walking and leads to the Arouca 516m suspension bridge, although reservations are necessary due to limited availability. This picturesque route showcases untouched landscapes, crystal-clear river waters, and endangered European species.
Phenomenal views, even during rainy weather! The main drag of the trail - including the suspension bridges - is ticketed requiring purchase online. Well worth the experience. Can make a full day out of the hike and surrounding local cafes. Highly recommended.

This place is amazing, absolutely spectacular. There is a small restaurant next to the car park. You can find everything you need there. Excellent food and very helpful staff. The trail is steep, long and challenging. Especially if you're doing it in 30°C. Tho well worth it. The bridge has to be booked separately. Otherwise, the trail up to the bridge is free if you want to carry on, it costs 4euros per person. Well worth it tho.
Sheislikea W — Google review
Unique experience, but an absolute must do in the region of Arouca. Totally worth to spend some time in nature. Well signed trail, parking and information on how to buy tickets. The wooden path was 2€ per person, crossing the bridge an extra 12€, but totally worth it.
Afonso G — Google review
This trail was beautiful but absolutely terrifying, if you do not like heights, I do not recommend. The pathway is mostly stairs, hanging off the cliff, high above the river. Not an easy stroll along the river.
Cassandra W — Google review
A must visit place! Get yourself comfy shoes, a bottle of/for water (they have tap water on the top), a swimsuit to swim in the river after the hike, something for picknik and enjoy stunning Portuguese nature. Loved this place soo much!
Sandra Z — Google review
Nice view from any part of the trail. Bridge is very impressive 1 km uphill from the Trailhead. Easy way to start from opposite side, but no parking on that side. You can go 4 km and back 4 km. Or take taxi back to the Trailhead. Or pickup with second car if you have.
Arie O — Google review
Really nice plan. Better go before 8 or 9 am. You gave to buy you entrance 2€ on line before . Bring comfortable shoes, tennis shoes are enough. Amazing views. Very well maintained wooden paths. Bring bath suit. You can take a taxi or a 4x4 jeep for the same price 20€ to go back to the starting point, so you don’t have to go back 9 km again .
Sonia G — Google review
It’s a really nice trail. If you book the suspension bridge you have to be at the bridge at that time because it’s a guided tour. We thought it was a time slot so we couldn’t go on there anymore. There are some nice spots to go for a swim in the river. You might want to bring water shoes because there are some sharp stones. There is a restroom about halfway. You should go there in the morning when there is still some shade (we got there at around 8:30 am).

An extremely great walkway we had ever experienced. Well maintained. We started and parked at another end. My strategy was the hard walkway should be done when we still fresh 😀. We enjoyed every moment along the way, recommend 👍👍👍👍👍

It is fantastic! Remember to bring swimwear! There are spots possible to swim and space for picnic. In the end of the route there is a prize an ice cold beer, soft drinks or ice creams!

Beautiful hike in the Arouca Geopark, UNESCO geological park. You can walk only one way if you wan, there are taxis at each end. You can start the hike in Areinho or Espiuca, but if you start from Areinho it's easier so you only go down the famous stairs. If you want (but not mandatory for the hike) you can cross the 516 Arouca bridge, which is the second longest suspended footbridge in the world (definitely worth it!). At the middle of the hike there are some toilets you can use, if you go during summer you can take a swim at certain points in the river and you might be able to see some free animals around. I loved it, I hope you'll do as well!
Veronica — Google review
Beautiful walk along the Paiva River valley. Most of the 5 mile walk is boarded with just a few short stretches of stone and soil. I started at Espiunca and walked both directions. There is a short suspension bridge as shown in my photos near 'Vau'. Not to be mistaken for the Arouca Bridge which is spectacular. Unfortunately the walk isn't accessible by wheelchair as there are several sets of steps even if you don't go all the way to Areinho. The walk up the steps to Areinho is hard going so you might to rest a couple of times going up, particularly on hot days.

I have visited this place 4 times in total, and every time I enjoyed. Difficulty level: moderate to hard Length: 8.5 km Parking: yes and free Entrance: yes, depends on time of year. Buy online to pay less. Normal start to start time: at least 4 hours Dog friendly: no please, Swimming facilities: hmmm, no facilities but possible in the river Coffee: one in the middle and two on both ends PAY attention to dehydration on sunny days Pay attention on ho

It’s a wonderful hiking trail 3 miles long. It goes along the river and high hills. You enjoy the spectacular views and nature. It’s possible in some places to go down to the river. You can meet the goats herded by dogs. There are beaches in the beginning and end of a trail. It’s better to take enough water with you. You will find a stairs with many steps. There is a taxi service in the end of the trail, so for 15€ per car you can come back to the beginning of the trail.
Alexius K — Google review
Well, this is one to repeat soon. There is a lot to enjoy and I only go through half the course, In part because of a "wardrobe malfunction" (my sneakers were destroyed - make sure yours are in good working conditions as the course can be rough at times). There aren't many support areas so, be sure to bring plenty water, food and go to the bathroom before starting. Plan your course ahead as you may want to park in one end and take a cab and start at other - the course is around 8.5km/2:30min for each side. There are plenty of shade (depending time of day/year, I guess), but take into account your heat endurance!
Nuno L — Google review
Number one trail in Portugal and probably in the world as it's a global winner for a lot years. Better start from up and go down to Espiunca, because upstairs it's harder. Not busy during off season. No restrooms during trail, couple small beaches during walk, few panorama stops, SOS phones periodically.

A private museum built and run by the family who owns the quarry where the biggest trilobites in the world have been found. They have championed the preservation of this heritage and paved the way for the recognition of the importance of the geological treasures of Arouca. Mother and son welcome you to the place and guide you through a small but amazing collection of fossils, very well presented in a clear, educational and scientifically accurate way. 5€ admittance fee, well worth the visit!

Maria gave us an excellent tour of this remarkable museum. The trilobites and related geologic and historical displays are very informative and well done.

Excellent private museum very well explained by the founders son. The trilobites here are huge compared to the normal.
Hamish L — Google review
Overall this is an incredible piece of scientific importance. This site has found a high concentration of large to very large trilobites (up to 90 cm). Admissions are 5 euros and parking is free. You watch a 23 minute English subtitled video and get to wander the museum (which is small but also the perfect size considering the content).
Ken W — Google review
Excellent. The museum is simple but full with treasures and their explanation is excellent. The architecture of the building are fabulous - build with slate. There is a query next door and also a Roman gold mine. Overall they try very hard and provide excellent value for money. It was our highlight of the day during that trip to aroca.
Pinaki G — Google review
A fortunate geological event made it possible for a small village in Portugal - Arouca -, to have some of the biggest trilobite fossils known to man. You must Visit to learn the story of a family that transformed a working quarry into an open air museum. Manuel Valério Jr. carries the torch of his late father's vision and life's work in a brilliant and passionate manner. Will visit again soon to make a trail overseeing the quarry that culminates in an ancient Roman gold mine. Absolutely recommend the visit!

At first look it was a simple restaurant, with absolutely no expectations. We got it, the waiter in one second made a table of 10 persons. Oh, about the waiter, he is absolutely character, so charismatic and so on point with the food. He told us “you will eat here the best beef in the region!” He was so WRONG! For me was the best beef that I have eat in my life, until now. The portions, huge! The red house wine absolutely delicious, perfect for the beef. I came here as part of a tour, and this restaurant saved the tour! We had goat meat with potatoes and spinach, along with homemade bread. The bread was unlike anything I've ever tasted before—so good! The goat meat was incredibly fresh and tender; I was genuinely sad when I got full because I wanted to eat more. Requinte do Paiva is a highly recommended restaurant located in an area with limited dining options. The portions are generous, with a meat dish for two being more than enough. It's conveniently situated near the start or end of Passadicos do Paiva, making it a great place to stay overnight and visit the restaurant.
In this area you can't find much good places to dinner eat but this place is really good and our portion of meat for 17€ was for 2 people even too much. Pizzas for kids was normal size. They are open all day that is quite comfortable. Next to start or end of Passadiços do Paiva so good place to stay orvernight and visit this restaurant.

FAKE REVIEWS, HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. After our experience at this place where we were served probably some of the worst food in our lives we were very surprised how is it possible this place has such high reviews. This confusion was cleared out when the staff of this establishment added three five star reviews to cover our one star (maybe don’t have your picture in google profile if you are goong to rate your own place, pathetic). Probably most of these reviews are completely fake judging on how they are written. HORRIBLE food, the meat smelled FOUL, they charged me more than was stated price in the menu and wanted to argue with me that the higher price is written on a different menu. Stay away.

Well, unfortunately we did not have possibility to experience what are good reviews describing, as we were there on a regular Tuesday (yesterday) when no week-end menu available: no nice oven meat and potato which we saw on the pictures both in Google and on the website (and the website info is old, old, old, as the prices are now doubled). We choose positions with nice names for our kids: "burger on bread", "burger on plate", "chicken salad". All dishes were super basic, I would say, worth the gas station cafeteria. Kids can eat almost anything, but I am not Okey with the prices for that basic dishes, which are not corresponding the 5 stars reviews and €5-10 rating. The chicken salad! You imagine the good dish with this name and the price of €9.50. It was extremely basic on a flat plate and not a bowl with few little peaces of some chicken (you can not even see it on a photo), and it would be Okey, but it was heavily seasoned with vinegar. which made it impossible for 10 y.o. kid to eat. All fresh vegetables on a table were seasoned by vinegar too much. Why? When the young girl waitress asked if everything is good, I said "since you asked, it's not - too much vinegar, it's not okey". I really expected she would suggest to change it. But not... Why ask then? What else... we ordered the steak for parents (first one on a menu) for share, (thanks for the comment from the waitress that the size is for two). We had no choice but only have it with the mountain of french fries, as another type of side dish only available during weekends. The steak was really huge. Third part of it was impossible to chew, but when we came to the middle, it was good enough. PS No olives, no butter to accompany the bread, no personal attending of the chief, as the ladies by the next table received (I saw their review, they put 5 stars without any commenting on food). Not even a farewell candy for kids after I was not quite happy with the food and answered truthfully on the question to give a chance to make our experience better. Nope, only €90 bill. Sad.

A beautiful restaurant with a wonderful view in the heart of nature, with excellent service, and all of this at very reasonable or low prices. I highly recommend it
