Arucas in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Arucas, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Arucas is known for its striking neo-Gothic Church of San Juan Bautista, built from local blue stone and dominating a compact historic center of traditional Canarian houses and plazas. The town has a long stone-carving tradition visible in its architecture, as well as surrounding landscapes of banana plantations and volcanic hills. Visitors often tour the Arehucas rum distillery, one of the oldest in the Canary Islands, and head up to Montaña de Arucas for panoramic views over the north coast and Las Palmas.
With favorites like la choza del papeo, Casa De La Cultura De Tamaraceite, and Mirador de Arucas, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Emblemática Rooftop and la choza del papeo so you can get the best taste of Arucas while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Las Canteras Beach

Beach
Las Canteras Beach is renowned for its vibrant assortment of wooden boats that embellish the golden coastline, serving as an idyllic site for snorkeling. While it possesses remarkable qualities, such as its sandy terrain and inviting waters, the beach can become crowded at times. It is essential to exercise caution when choosing a spot for your towel, as unexpected tides can potentially drench you. The sea offers ample opportunities to indulge in swimming; however, certain areas are adorned with numerous rocks.
Absolutely amazing sandy beach. It is miles long. Well kept, clean and life guards on duty. Perfect for families as it's really shallow. Also a best location to enjoy the sunset view Lovely Palm trees around and a beautiful promenade is behind of it.
Anna J — Google review
Playa de Las Canteras is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The wide, sandy beach with a gentle slope into the ocean is perfect for long walks along the shore. A natural reef protects against waves, making swimming safe. In the evening, the promenade comes alive, with charming cafés and the sound of the waves creating a unique atmosphere. ..
Tomasz S — Google review
Beautiful beach with golden sand, calm clear water, and a lively promenade full of cafes and shops. Perfect spot to swim, relax, or watch the sunset. Loved it!
Hicham A — Google review
Maybe one of the most iconic beaches on Gran Canaria! But definitely worth visiting! A few km long but very clean, sand is perfect, plenty of space to place your own beach towel, or you can rent a sunbed and umbrella! Amazing promenade, you could walk for hours and discover all amazing restaurants along the beach! Amazing views of the Ocean as well!
Ioan M — Google review
I fell in love with this beach and the entire long promenade. Early in the morning, when there are no people yet, and in the afternoon, when everything is full of life. The cafes invite you to sit down and enjoy. And the ocean is just worth looking at...
Lina G — Google review
I don’t see anything particularly beautiful about this beach. It’s nice to walk along the promenade with cafes and bars, but I’ve seen prettier city beaches. The ones in the southern part of the island are definitely nicer, even though they’re not right in the city. It’s not terrible, but it didn’t really impress me.
J. K — Google review
It's stunning. The sand is fine and easy to walk on. Short cut to Las Arenas shopping mall. Good parking near by.

Parroquia de San Juan Bautista de Arucas, also known as the Arucas Cathedral, is a stunning neo-Gothic cathedral in Gran Canaria. Construction began in 1909 and was completed in 1977. The church features a carved cedar altar and rose windows, making it an iconic landmark of the area. Visitors praise its imposing presence and recommend exploring the beautiful surrounding area, which includes coffee shops, sweet shops, botanical gardens, and rich history.
The cathedral is magnificent, so detailed and made of beautiful stone. The area around it is also very beautiful with benches you can relax on and admire the building. We couldnt find the entrance, it seemed closed when we visited. On the other side there was a stage set up so you cant view the cathedral well from all sides. There's a large free parking right next to it so its really easy to visit. Easily the most impressive piece of architecture in Gran Canaria. The surrounding streets also very charming.
Spela K — Google review
What a surprise to see this in a little town. You can see why people visit there. The streets around it are nice little safe walking streets. With a garden at one end. The church it's self costs 5 euros to enter but is worth it. Go have a look
Phillip M — Google review
Beautiful church which is not as old as you think. The stained glass windows are amazing. There are many statues of saints and Jesus. You can also go up to the second floor to see the rest of holy statues. You get an amazing view of the stained glass windows from close on the second floor too which was a really rare.
Ava ( — Google review
Free parking nearby, lovely park and plants everywhere around. There's a cathouse also for stray cats :') If you arrive at noon you can hear the bells playing, that was really nice.
Fanni S — Google review
Impressive cathedral even it is in a very small but beautiful town. Pay attention to the schedule. It is closed in the afternoon until 4 PM.
Radu H — Google review
Lovely cathedral. Amazing structure and architecture. Church of St. John the Baptist in Arucas. Construction began on 19 March 1909, and took over 68 years. The church was opened for public worship in 1917, but the construction continued until 1977, when the church was completed. Due to the large dimensions, it is usually referred to as The Arucas Cathedral even though it is not a cathedral. Rose window is often used as a generic term applied to a circular window, but is especially used for those found in Gothic cathedrals and churches. The windows are divided into segments by stone mullions and tracery. The term rose window was not used before the 17th century and comes from the English flower name rose.
John M — Google review
Even just seeing it from outside (closed because of a holiday), the trip is definitely worth it. Beautiful architecture and interesting history. It is for sure a sight to behold. Many great spots to grab a drink and enjoy the view.

Mirador De La Montaña De Arucas offers a stunning bird's-eye view of Arucas' cathedral and the lush greenery of north Gran Canaria's banana plantations. Despite being officially closed, visitors can still access the viewpoint and enjoy the panoramic sweep of the area. The comfortable walk on a paved road leads to beautiful views, although urban decay is evident in some areas. While there may be some restrictions in place, many visitors find ways to enter and appreciate the picturesque scenery.
Very comfortable walk on a paved road. The top is officially closed but the barricade is destroyed so you can access the top and the wonderful view. About 35 min walk from the cathedral.

Although very far away, it is very nice to see, a bit abandoned since there wasn't even a cafeteria, but the town is very pretty.
Yolanda G — Google review
Unfortunately, officially closed, as the bar is closed and even the mirador area is cut off - wire, boards... I assume the land is state-owned - the mirador should be open. Now with everything "closed", the place is destroyed - people always find ways to enter.

Mirador de Arucas, located on the cone-shaped Montana de Arucas just north of the town, offers a spectacular view of the surrounding area including the town of Arucas and other parts in the north of Gran Canaria. While the restaurant at the top is closed, visitors can still stop at the parking lot to admire breathtaking views. Accessible by car with ample parking available, it's recommended to visit on a clear day for stunning vistas over Las Palmas and the ocean.
Amazing views and if you go in the afternoon, you will enjoy the sunset.
Brian I — Google review
I walked all the way to the view point from the town centre. Don't be surprised if you find yourself walking on the road after some point as there is no pedestrian route to the top. The views along the way was much better than the view from the top. There was a restaurant on the top, but it was closed when I visited.

Amazing sea and mountain views over the town of arucas with its massive cathedral and over to las palmas and the ocean when it's clear
Ahmad B — Google review
. The Montaña de Arucas with its Mirador is well worth a visit for the spectacular view. It's a cone-shaped mountain just to the north of the town. If you have a satnav it is easy-peasy to get there. it is actually listed on the Garmin satnavs and programmed in, but if you have another make, just look for the spiral road whirling round and round - that's it! Otherwise, you follow the signs to La Montaña de Arucas (or sometimes just to La Montaña) through the scary one-way system of the town, and then climb up and round, and up and round, until you come out on the hill-top with 360 degree views over Las Palmas, the North Coast, and the Central mountainous area La Cumbre. Well worth the nail-biting drive through the narrow streets. .

Great view. Unfortunally the restaurant were closed, but the way up here (by car) and the view is definitly an adventure and worth it!

Hacienda La ReKompensa is a tropical paradise located just a short drive from the rum distillery in Arucas. This stunning Canarian hacienda offers its facilities for weddings and upscale events, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a unique and picturesque setting. Visitors can explore the flourishing banana plantation, where they can witness the daily care required to sustain these tropical trees and taste the freshest bananas.
Highly recommended. Tours available in English. Mr. Steve is an excellent tour guide if you happen to catch his tour. Grounds and facilities are kept really nice and clean. Views are fantastic. Very informative tour of their working Banana Farm. Thank you.

Excellent tour if you want to find interesting things about the world of bananas (species, the growth’s process, etc.). Daniela, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and provided an unforgettable memory. I recommend the visit, in a guided tour, even you can see the plantation on your own.

Lovely experience. (They have parking spaces inside). Juan was a nice guide, he told us about the story of the bananas and the varieties. Tasting was also a great idea. We bought the banana that tasted like citrus. Excellent! I highly recommend.

Very nice! The plantation is very big, lots of varieties. We had Maria as our guide. She is very knowledgeable, passionate and friendly. At the end of the tour there is also a tasting. A very nice experience and definitely must see in Gran Canaria

We had an amazing experience on the banana plantation tour! Our guide, Fatima, was absolutely wonderful – kind, funny, and full of interesting knowledge. We ended up having a “private” tour since we were the only ones requesting it in English, which made it even more special. Highly recommended to everyone!
Nata Z — Google review
We visited the plantations today . We were in Las Palmas for one day and we took a taxi that was waiting for us-> such a tip if someone does not know how to get there . Our tour was led by Lidia very friendly. :)The tour was short but at the same time interesting. Perfect. In the store I would recomend for the future the possibility of buying banana ice cream in different variants - good gellato always would be welcome :)
Paulina J — Google review
Visited this wonderful plantation for the tour! Loved learning about this fruit, exploring the plantation and taste testing so many delicious local treats.
Sara N — Google review
We really liked the tour, it's well thought out and just the right length to include all the interesting information and answer all questions you may have about bananas and the plantation. Our guide John was knowledgeable and engaging. The property itself is very nicely looked after and there's workers all around making improvements, everyone is very kind. The gift shop also includes many interesting items and banana products. The tasting featured jams and alcoholic beverages, but none of them had a distinct or overpowering taste of banana. I liked the banan/passionfruit wine the most. My only wish would be that they would offer the tasting of the actual bananas shown on the tour (red and blue variants).

Such a really cool bar/restaurant! I came 20 minutes before closing the kitchen but still was possible to order. I tried octopus and I wanted some chocolate dessert which they didn’t have it but it was recommended me a Canarian dessert with banana and I have to say I was really glad that the chocolate dessert run out because the banana dessert was delicious! Great wine, nice view and staff who speaks English. I had there really nice afternoon. If I am in Arucas again it will be my first choice for meal.

I had no expectations when I visited La Choza del Papeo, but the staff greeted me warmly. The owner recommended their delicious goat meat, which was tender and flavorful - it felt like a homemade dish passed down through generations. The bread from a local bakery was exceptional too, with a crispy exterior and soft inside. I highly recommend this place for its welcoming service, polite staff, and great value for money. It's definitely a must-visit during your trip to the city!
Went to this cafe without any expectation, we've been received by the staff which were very welcoming. The owner suggested us the goat meat which was the best meal I've had on the island, very tender meat and super tasty, it was like eating at my grandma, surely the same recipe it's been cooked for many years. Also the bread was amazing, from a local bakery using a wood fire oven, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, I proper recommend this place.

Tapas bar
Bochinche El Chato is a popular tapas bar in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with a comfortable atmosphere and traditional Spanish dishes. The chefs here pride themselves on serving up dishes their mothers made them, and the small but friendly space always feels welcoming. However, due to the popularity of the restaurant, it can be quite busy in peak times so be prepared to wait awhile for a table. The food is predominantly fried but nonetheless delicious, and the desert is especially wonderful.
The tapas place is one of the best ones we’ve had in Gran Canaria. Every dish was amazing and fairly-priced, cheaper than the restaurants by the sea and tastes better and more local. The wine was also great. We recommend the octopus and potato. Service was quicks and friendly, and interior decor was intimate and cozy.
Amber W — Google review
I will start with the positive aspects. Overall, the food was flavorful. The goat meat as well as the ropa vieja had an incredible taste. The papas arugadas that came with the meat were great, too. However, we found the huevos rotos to be very much underwhelming. The ropa vieja, while excellent in taste, arrived cold. We also found the polvito uruguayo to be average, we've had much better ones
Damien S — Google review
It was a really nice restaurant to stopby for some tapas and glass of a wine. The traffic there is quite big, sometimes You need to wait for a table, but people are changing tables quite quickly. The food was cery good, we enjoyed it, portions were quite big. We really enjoyed the place, recommend.
Otishone — Google review
Greate atmosphere, nice place to eat. The food was really good, I gave only 4 because there is always room for improvements when it comes to food. The Canadian potatoes were brilliant. In our opinion, when we get calmari and fridge pork, the chips are not needed.

Great meal and drinks here. Brilliant vegetarian options especially if you’re a group. Lovely service and top quality food. Ordered everything we wanted and still very cheap per person.
Elizabeth W — Google review
Great atmosphere, great staff. Even talked us down from ordering too much food, and we still ended leaving full. Food was amazing, portions were large, and decently priced. If you're looking for an authentic spanish tapas venue. I'd definitely give this a go. Make sure you go early, or book, otherwise you will be waiting for a table, surrounded by locals (which is always a great sign!)
Nicholas T — Google review
Small tapas bar, amazing food and hosts were really attentive. Highlight for me was the servers sisters cheesecake... unreal!
Mark M — Google review
Ate here for lunch on a Thursday (I think they're closed for lunch other weekdays) as I've heard and seen good comments. Didnt have a reservation but got there early. We ordered 1/2 papas arrugadas, 1/2 puntillitas, 1/2 octopus ropa vieja. Everything tasted great, fresh, made with love. Waited a bit for the food, not sure if it's because they had just opened, or if it's always slow. Service was correct, but nothing special in our case. I do wish all food came at once, since we didnt order a lot and they were tapas, so eating one at a time was a bit weird. I was a bit sad they were out of the goat meat, I would like to go back and try it!

The food was good only for that I give two stars, we would never go there again because of the poor service!! We felt like not welcome at all, we had two kids with us I think because of that, the waiter acted annoyed everytime he passed us. We ordered steak but we had to give it back to the kitchen 2 times, when we got back the meat at the 3rd time, most of the meat was fat. By paying the bill we asked for a discount or a free dessert because of this problems but they refused telling us that sometimes this happens with meat with to much fat but we have to pay full for it. I would recommend the restaurant to provide also an english menu, so ordering will be faster for tourists not speaking Spanish.

The waiter was really slowly and was not able to handle 3 tables at once. We order chicken with cous cous ,which was extremely dry, and a burger. We especially pointed out with no cheese and no milk Produkts and they brought us a cheese burger with brioche bun. After pointing that out he brought us a new burger which took over 30 min. The first burger came with salad, Tomate, bacon and onions the new requested burger just came with bread and a patty, no sauce no salad. I would definitely would not recommend this restaurant at all.

Surprisingly good kitchen! The cevice was a 10 out of 10, the Bautista ensaladilla a 9 out of 10. Beaitiful terrace right in front of the church. Friendly service.
