Valenca in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Valenca, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Valença is a fortified hilltop town overlooking the Minho River, known for its extensive star-shaped walls and well-preserved historic center. Walking the ramparts offers wide views across the river to the Spanish town of Tui, linked by an iconic iron bridge. The old town inside the fort is filled with traditional shops, local textiles, and regional food specialties. Valença also lies on a popular route of the Camino de Santiago, making it a frequent stop for pilgrims and walkers.
With favorites like Solar do Bacalhau, Monumento aos Combatentes da Grande Guerra, and Igreja St Maria dos Anjos, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Bom Jesus and Rocha Grill - Restaurante so you can get the best taste of Valenca while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Intermarché is a conventional grocery store that offers a diverse range of fresh and preserved food items. Additionally, it also houses a deli section where customers can find ready-to-eat options. Customers have expressed satisfaction with the products available in this particular area of the store. While Intermarché may be considered a small supermarket, it still manages to provide shoppers with an impressive assortment of goods. However, some individuals searching for Latin American products may not have found them here.

Not impressed. Usually I like intermarche, but this one was not good for fruit and vegetables. The tomatoes were old and a lot of them were green. The carrots were dirty and not fresh. No guacamole. Not a good selection for vegetarians.

Upon entering the Fortress in Valenca, one encounters an open space housing the initial sculpture of Saint Teotonio. This exquisite location brims with historical significance and boasts aesthetic splendor.

(Translated by Google) The sculpture is the work of Vasco Pereira da Conceição, made in 1966, in honor of Saint Teotónio, born in 1082 in the parish of Ganfei, near Valença. Prior of the cathedral chapter of Viseu, Saint Teotónio was one of the founders of Santa Cruz de Coimbra, in 1131, and its first prior. He died in 1162, and was canonized the following year, becoming the first Portuguese saint. In the work he appears – anachronistically – with a miter and crosier, symbols of the episcopate, which the priors of Santa Cruz managed to wear, by papal privilege, decades after his death. Pereira has placed in his right hand a starry globe, an exclusive attribute of the saint, which refers to a miraculous phenomenon that occurred in Coimbra the day before his death, when a large, glowing globe with stars descended on the cloister of Santa Cruz. thus miraculously announcing the death of Theotonius.

Rude staff! The lady in charge in the lobby was a bit brutal, she pretended to give to the visitors a technical lesson about how to wear the mask, although she did not know herself how to wear it properly. She behaved like a bad primary school teacher. And, shockingly, she TOUCHED her own mask with both hands, which is strictly not recommended, for obvious health and safety reasons! This authoritarian behaviour spoiled a little bit the visit.

The Fortaleza of Valença pretty much closes in the evening and this is one of the few places open. Luckily the staff were friendly and happy for us to.have a few snacks rather than a full meal. Good music if a bit loud at times. The manager kept coming out to turn it down. Samosas and cod croquettes both tasty as was the seafood soup and the corn bread was incredibly moreish. Last weekend we were looking for a place to eat inside the Fortaleza but to be quite honest the prices were quite steep so I decided to look outside the Fortress which by luck we found Rocha Grill Restaurant. Y fauna number crackly de Ivon heart bigger o vegetal in food but only if you reserve before. You can park outside the restaurant or on the streets close to it. The staff were very polite and attempt to make sure that the food was to our liking. As always if I were to complain about something would be about the small plates with Brad's and olives and cheese which they charge you even though you didn't ask for them but in their defense all the restaurants in Portugal do that which I'm not a big fan of other than that it's a great place to eat and the guy who attended us was very funny we had a great laugh so big thumbs up for me👍

The brazilian churrasco was good and the cod fish. Only the rice was a bit off. The single portions are enough and bring a bug apetite. Overall the total experience was nice.

Portuguese restaurant
If you're looking for a culinary gem in Valença, look no further than O Limoeiro. This charming restaurant is renowned for its incredible leg of lamb, which is so tender it practically falls off the bone. Served alongside flavorful potatoes, rice, and greens, it's a dish that can easily satisfy multiple diners. Although I arrived after lunchtime when some grill options were unavailable, sharing the lamb was an absolute win!
AMAZING leg of lamb, delicious fall-off-the-bone tender meat served with potatoes, rice and greens. We arrived after lunchtime was pretty much over and anything from the barbecue/grill was off the menu. But boy did we strike lucky sharing the lamb. We had enough for 3. They gave us cheese, olives, bread and cheese when we day down without asking....you do get charged for this, so be clear if you don't want this. We enjoyed them as they were tasty and happily paid, but it was a surprise to see them on the bill, Added about €10 to the bill. We had extremely well cooked prawns in garlic as a starter. All washed down with 2 bottles of wine. Staff were pleasant and accommodating. The outside seating has a view of the city walls and you can see where part of the wall has collapsed. One of the only restaurants in Valença to have an external view to the surrounding area. As far as I know all other restaurants are inside the walled citadel with no views. The restaurant is tucked away slightly away from the busy central streets for shopping and easy to miss. Home made There are a couple of clothes boutiques selling one of sample pieces which are more unusual than the majority of the samey clothes sold on the main shopping streets. Also worth a visit.

Fantastic food. Pre-order the lamb, it is delicious. Great service too.

I've wanted to eat here for a long time because the vibe and food always looked nice as we passed by. On Sunday, my husband, friend, and I came for lunch and had a lovely lunch. My husband had the goat, which he enjoyed thoroughly. My friend and I both had the solomillo steak, served with grelos and potatoes. My steak had a stringy texture but sill tasted good, both steaks tasted good and we enjoyed the food and wine very much. Until a few hours later, when both my friend and I were struck down with food poisoning. As we had had no other food before lunch, it could only have come from the food we ate there, and since my husband was unaffected, I strongly suspect the steaks were the culprit. Such a shame to have such a horrible end to a good lunch. The service was very good and loved the setting on the fort walls. The kitchen let the team down, though.
Carin K — Google review
The servings of grilled cod are big and tasty but the service is too slow. We found it too expensive. Liquor shots at 6.50 € each!! Total bill for five people people: 142€. When we asked the waiter to check if everything was correct, he apologised, took a pen and rewrote a new price, applying a discount which sounded "strange" as it sounded the explanation in which he recognized that it eas too expensive...

Fatum is an outstanding eatery situated within the walls of a historical fortress, providing a one-of-a-kind dining experience. The cuisine offered is truly remarkable, and the portions are of average size. On select Saturday nights, patrons can enjoy live Portuguese fado music, which adds to the enchanting atmosphere. It comes highly recommended and offers reasonable prices. The service provided by the staff is exceptional – friendly and outgoing.

This is a fantastic restaurant. We had dinner there just by chance but local people consider this as one of the best restaurants in the area. The menu peregrino is a bargain at 20 euros for soup, main dish (only 2 choices, but the rice with seafood is a feast), dessert and a drink, which includes house wine, a bottle if you have 2 menus. I could not recommend more this place.

This place is amazing, I can’t remember having ever had better service than we got here. The owner’s cook and serve and they know what they are doing. Here you will find both very traditional food from Portugal, and not as traditional. Ask for advice and they will offer it, and can even show you pictures of the food if you are unsure. Huge portions, great prices, amazing taste. And you will be dining inside the fortress in a beautiful setting. Can’t recommend enough.

The Monastery of Sanfins, with its rich history and charm, exudes a rustic and genuine ambience. The approach road, particularly when coming from the Atlantic Ocean, holds its own unique allure. On April 28, 2023, it was open but undergoing restoration; thus, only the stones that comprise the structure were present inside. The ruins of this monastery offer an authentic and tranquil experience that is highly recommended for those exploring the region.

It is in ruins, but the height of the wall alone is surprising and makes clear the importance it must have had in its times of splendor in the past. The church is in good condition, although it is empty inside. The rest of the complex is in a state of abandonment, but you can tour all the rooms and get an idea of what it was like. It is worth a visit, it will not leave you indifferent. If you go by car or motorcycle you can park very close to the door. The day I was there, a Saturday morning in December, there was no one there. The Marco Miliário Romano is a fascinating relic from the 1st century AD, commissioned by Emperor Claudius. This ancient milestone not only signifies the distance between Braga and Tui but also reflects the rich history of Roman infrastructure in the region. Over time, it has taken on various roles, even serving as a pillory at one point. As you explore this remarkable site, you'll appreciate how these milestones once guided travelers along Roman roads while marking significant distances between destinations.
Constructed under the patronage of Emperor Cláudio during the 1st century AD, this historical edifice stands as a testament to the connectivity between Braga and Tui during antiquity. Evolving in function over the years, it also served a penal role as a pillory. These milestones not only delineated the Roman thoroughfares upon which they were strategically positioned, but also effectively communicated the interstitial distances separating them.

(Translated by Google) The milestone is a large stone column that served as a milestone or milestone on ancient Roman roads and marked the distances in Roman miles from one town to another. This milestone marked the Roman road IX Antonina that linked the cities of Braga (Bracara Augusta) with Lugo (Lucus Augusti) and specifically marks the number of miles between Braga and Tuy, 42 miles (about 62 kilometers). The milestone is from the middle of the 1st century and belongs to the time of Emperor Tiberius Claudius. In it you can read an inscription in Latin with the full name of Emperor Claudius and the titles he held of Emperor and Pontiff Maximus. This milestone was moved to Valença from its original location in 1680, just 12 years after the end of the Restoration War that pitted Portugal and Spain from 1640 to 1668. For years the milestone served as a pillory for ridicule and punishment of prisoners and criminals. A column with enormous historical value.

(Translated by Google) Such a simple neoclassical façade hides incredible secrets. It's right in the heart of the Fortress and is the main temple of the complex. Although it was rebuilt in the 18th century, its origins are much older (medieval, 13th century), and this gives it an air of historical weight that is evident as soon as you walk through the door. The great gem and curiosity: Inside the church is a very particular painting, known as the Virgin of Milk (Nossa Senhora do Leite), which depicts the Virgin Mary breastfeeding the Child Jesus. Why is it special? It's the only painting of its kind in all of Portugal that survived the Inquisition! Just to see this unique piece is worth the visit. Also, take a look at the Episcopal Chair, a 15th-century chair in a beautiful Gothic-Mudejar style, and the panels that narrate the life of Saint Stephen. My quick tip: Take a break from shopping, step inside, and enjoy the peace and stories within its walls. It's a perfect contrast to the comings and goings of outsiders.

The floor is made of wood delimited by granite guides, as is its interior. The ceiling is also made of wood. At this time, fortunately, it is being restored, but in any case it is open to the public.

Solar do Bacalhau is a traditional eatery where one can enjoy delectable chicken and ribs. The service is known for its exceptional amiability and efficiency. When it comes to desserts, patrons are advised to explore the assortment of homemade pastries rather than solely relying on the menu. It's worth mentioning that condiments like ketchup and mayonnaise are readily available.
It's a remarkable place after losing myself in the rain over two hours. The food with drinks was amazing and friendly staff made my day healing my tiredness coming from too much walking in the bda weather. Definitely highly recommend for finishing your meal with a blanco porto wine.

Ate chicken and ribs here with my family. The service was friendly and quite fast. When asking for a desert, go look for the home made pastry, don't use the menu card. By the way, they also serve ketchup and mayonaise 😁

This place is big and if you eat dinner early it can feel a bit cavernous and empty. However, the staff are absolutely lovely, the food was very good and it was great value.

My family and I dined at this resturant, enjoying dishes of chicken and ribs. We found the service to be notably amiable and efficient. For dessert selections, I recommend seeking out their homemade pastries rather than relying solely on the menu. It's worth noting that condiments such as ketchup and mayonnaise are also available.

Very good cod of Solar but watch out for the ham they put on top if you don't eat meat. Nevertheless, the cod is very expensive (35 euros for 2 ppl). Chocolate mousse was Excellent! But the top part of the restaurant was very full.

Very nice and attentive service. All employees were very efficient, nice and friendly. Food was good, well presented and in big portions. Also has dishes for vegetarians.
Luis M — Google review
Massive portions, no vegetarian options. The codfish was drowned in mayonnaise and ham. Food did not taste good. Lots of oil and fat.

Nestled in the heart of the local dining scene, Restaurante O Cozinheiro Nuno offers a delightful experience for those seeking authentic cuisine. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with a friendly waiter who may not speak English but certainly knows how to make guests feel at home. Diners rave about the fantastic food, including standout dishes like their fried sole, which is both delicious and incredibly affordable at just 6.50!
Excellent food. Had a fried sole absolutely delicious at only € 6,50!

If you are going there for ( o prato do dia), It is good, but we went on Sunday ordered our food. Took awhile when it arrived tasted like it was reheated not fresh. Very disappointed.

This restaurant pushes what they call their daily specials for quick service... I had the lamb .. overcooked.. booked potatoes made the entire dish soggy ... other dish was shy on bacalhau.. nephew's steak was a Prego no prato.... tough tough meat .... Will wait a long time prior to going back
