Ajnella

4.6
(586)
Historical landmark
Ajnella is a stunning beach located in the small town of Scalea, which is one of the oldest towns on the upper Tyrrhenian coast. The beach stretches for about 8 kilometers from Ajnella to Cirella and features a long, wide, and sandy shoreline interrupted only by an impressive rock with the Talao Tower standing on it, symbolizing Scalea Beach. It's known as the only safe place in Scalea for swimming due to its calm waters.
The only place in Scalea where you can safely bathe in the sea - no big waves! On other beaches you can either drown 5 metres from the seashore or just sunbathe. But unfortunately you aren't allowed to use a parasol here - the police oficer (carabinieri) is watching you... and you may get a ticket!

This place is pure magic. When I was there the waves were hitting in the rocks and the sun was setting on. Incredible.

Calabria wild beauty at its best. The scenic path, over rocks, steep steps (and a narrow section without a gandrail due to the path falling in) leading to grey pebbled uncrowded beaches.

Chiesa dello Spedale - Affreschi Bizantini

3.6
(8)
Chiesa dello Spedale is a small chapel with stunning Byzantine frescoes dating back to before the year 1000. The church features an apse and two niches depicting Jesus and the saints, along with some discovered bones from what was likely a crypt. Visitors must contact the Proloco of Scalea for access. The church is in need of renovation but still holds the remains of its beautiful Byzantine frescoes.
(Translated by Google) Spectacular! When I went I had to knock on the doorbell of the family who lives there, it belongs to them through generations. You can leave a donation. There are still the remains of the Byzantine frescoes but the church is very decadent and needs to be renovated. (Original) Spettacolare!

(Translated by Google) We did not have the opportunity to visit this church because being private you have to knock on the door of the owners who were not present at that moment. From what we heard, from the lucky ones who managed to see them, the Byzantine frescoes are very beautiful, but in poor condition. So we ask ourselves: Why doesn't the superintendency intervene by somehow taking this church away from the owners and making these beauties visible to everyone.
Giudes — Google review
(Translated by Google) I was unable to visit the frescoes. Once we reached the place, after climbing a long staircase, we found this inappropriate sign without any telephone indication. Unfortunately the area is quite deserted and we were unable to ask anyone for information. Having returned to the central area of the town and told us what had happened, they told us that the chapel where the frescoes are located is private and that we need to contact a family who lives opposite the place.

The Ruderi del Castello Normanno is a captivating historical site that promises breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As you explore the remnants of this ancient castle, you'll be transported back in time, feeling the echoes of its Norman past. While reaching the top involves navigating numerous steps, every bit of effort is rewarded with stunning vistas that are perfect for photography enthusiasts. However, it's important to note that due to steep cliffs and a lack of guardrails, caution is advised for families with young children.

Italian restaurant
Antica Trattoria A' Taverna is a hidden gem nestled in the charming old town of Scalea, offering an authentic Calabrian dining experience that you won't want to miss. The atmosphere exudes romance and history, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely meal. Guests rave about the generous portions of traditional homemade dishes, with highlights like the sublime Fusilli With N'duja and tender pork chops that leave diners craving more.
We love this hidden gem, the food is amazing and really brings you back to the local classical Italian flavors. We can’t get enough of their eggplant Parmesan. The restaurant is a bit of a hike through the historical district but it is well worth it. For those with restricted mobility we recommend parking near the top and walking down from the castle ruins (not wheelchair acceptance). Truly a great location for amazing Italian cuisine.

Very cute and lovely atmosphere! After reading the reviews saying the food is amazing but the waiting time is long we (two people) were prepared for a long sit, but we just had to wait a few minutes for a table (they put up a new table for us although it was full) and for antipasti we waited maybe 30 mins and the other food came straight after we finished it, so no bad waiting at all! Very good prices for wine and lovely attitude from the staff! Great experience and rich flavours, best we have tried in Scalea! Extra plus that they arranged a vegetarian version of the antipasti!
Julia S — Google review
Incredible food and service. If you are looking for a real authentic experience in Scalea, this is it. It is worth the walk up the old historic streets.
Magnus S — Google review
The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, but the service and food were really disappointing. We were first served by a waitress who didn’t speak English – she took our drink order and brought the drinks. About three minutes later, another waitress who spoke English came and told us that the kitchen wouldn’t start cooking for another hour. So we already had drinks on the table but couldn’t order food unless we waited an hour. Leaving wasn’t really an option because we would still have to pay the coperto. We decided to order a starter, but the bread that came with it was at least a week old. After an hour, our main dishes arrived – the pasta was bland, and the ribs were very rubbery. Overall, quite a disappointment. I wouldn’t recommend this place
Tomas T — Google review
The staff is the lowlight. The main waiter ostentatiously ignored us and looked down at us when we decided not to go for what he had suggested. The rest of staff was trying but disorganised. The food is authentic and the place is beautiful but the staff made us leave as soon as we could, within less than an hour.

We are 2.5 weeks in to our Italy adventure and we have had a lot of good good, but this place takes the cake. The service, the room, the wine, the gnocchi, the Dolci de la casa…..I cannot even begin to explain how good this was. And we went to Michelin star places in Milan, top rated pizzerias in Caserta and Naples…yet this restaurant is now our favorite meal and experience! In fact our whole trip this is the only place I feel the need to write a review lol. Grazie Mille!!!!
Alexandra S — Google review
Worst service. Visited two times as place is just around the corner from our house. First time we didn’t have a reservation, so I thought that it might be the case of long wait. Second time even with reservation - again were seated 50min AFTER RESERVATION. Both times - no interaction from staff, you have to start cathing them and asking what’s happening, otherwise they’ll simply ignore you. They never apologise or advise how long you’ll need to wait. No explanation of why our reservation was missing - NOTHING. Waste of time. Food was OK.

Seafood restaurant
La Scogliera, a restaurant situated by the sea, offers a wide range of fresh fish and seafood dishes. Although slightly pricey for Calabria, the seafood antipasti are generous in portion size and feature delectable octopus, prawns, and marinated anchovies. Their pasta options include traditional linguine with clams or mussels at a reasonable price.
It's a good, elegant restaurant with a great view on the horizon (especially good during sunset). The prices are okay, the food is delicious. Didn't notice anything concerning.

This is the worst places where we ate in Italy. If your are expecting to try a good seafood plate it’s definitely not the right place to go, fish is dry as everything else, the smell of food also unpleasant . The waiting time is super long and they even can’t remember what you order. The prices are too high you definitely can find a better place for a better price!

Some car exited from the internal parking of this restorant, at a crazy speed without looking and almost killed me on my little electric scooter. I told him: "don't drive like crazy. be more attentive, please". After a few minutes, the waiter of this place ran after me, very angry and told me I shouldn't talk like this to their clients. What was this??.. Crazy planet.

A charming little place for wine and cheese. The cheese board was beautiful - a selection of cheeses, vegetables, olives, Tropea onions pickled, jams, grapes and tomato bruschetta. Went perfectly with our chilled white wine. Great atmosphere in Old Scalea.

I saw that somebody wrote that this place was a tourist trap. It is an absolutely unfair comment. This restaurant is a gem in Scalea. The ingredients of each and every meal were authentic and very high quality. Whatever we ate was up to the promise written on the menu. The service and the atmosphere were very elegant. Moreover, I haven’t seen such a clean and very well maintained local restaurant in Europe. The atmosphere was also very romantic and unique. I also have to mention their contemporary interpretation of Tiramisu. It was delicious and adequate for summer. I highly recommend it!

My wife and I arrived at our lodging in Scalea and were delighted to find this place just around the corner as we were wandering to find an interesting place to eat, and what a great experience! The food was outstanding, the service was excellent, and the outdoor patio seating provided an intimate setting in the small piazza along with a terrific view in the distance. We ordered the cheese plate, a salad with fresh tomatoes and burratta, and the red tuna. All were fantastic! Highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) Hello everyone, I am writing with a heavy heart because last weekend, during a short vacation in Scalea with my boyfriend, we experienced a very unpleasant episode... Someone broke into the trunk of our motorbike and stole our jackets that were inside. A truly sad gesture that left us shocked. For me it is not just a holiday destination, I was born in Calabria and I always return with affection and nostalgia. It is a land that I love deeply, and every time I return I do so with a heart full of emotions. But this time, unfortunately, I take away a bitter memory. The theft occurred between Saturday and Sunday, in the area of "le terrazze". If by chance anyone has seen something or finds themselves having to deal with the suspicious sale of these jackets, I ask you to contact me privately: they are both black with white details, Acerbis brand, male and female model and for us they also have an emotional value. I am also writing to warn those who, like us, love this beautiful place, to be more careful. I hope that Scalea can remain a safe and welcoming place for everyone. A heartfelt thank you to anyone who can help us or even just share this message. 🙏❤️ (I have tried several times to share this post on the Scalea page here on fb but they keep removing it) (Original) Ciao a tutti, scrivo con tanta amarezza nel cuore perché lo scorso weekend, durante una breve vacanza a Scalea con il mio fidanzato, abbiamo vissuto un episodio molto spiacevole... The town of Scalea, where the tower is situated, also boasts beautiful churches such as Santa Maria de Episcopio and San Nicola in Plateis. The beach in Scalea stretches for about 8 kilometers and features a long sandy coastline interrupted only by the impressive rock on which Torre Talao stands.
You can only enter the tower with a guide - Mr Franco sitting by the info point or call him to set up a date and hour - see phone number I attach on a photo. You pay by donation. He is very professional, talks about history of the place, as well as nature around and oh boy best views of Scalea are from this tower!

We were passing by with a family and a guy he is responsible for that tower) came to us and started offering to visit this tower. He used auto-translate since english is not his best part and he was very pushy. We discussed a little and decided we will not go right now, because our baby is sleeping in a stroller and rain is coming. Then this guys started to shout at us and called us some bad words in Italian. We definitely remove this tower from our visit list and he doesn’t help for Scalea image for sure. If you work with people - you should know how to communicate. It doesn’t matter if you know a lot if you have communication issues…

Nestled in the heart of Scalea, the Palazzo dei Principi Spinelli is a stunning historical palace that dates back to 1302. With its Romanesque roots intertwined with Gothic and Renaissance features, this elegant structure once served as the residence for the illustrious Spinelli Princes. Today, it stands as a cultural hub, housing the town library and hosting various events throughout the summer months.

Scalea centro storico is a charming medieval village located in the Cosenza area, with its historic center offering a step back in time experience. The historic center of Scalea is full of sick and sad cats, everywhere. Cats covered with flies and itchy of fleas, and with runny noses and sticky eyes and drooping heads. It is both an issue of animal cruelty, as well as a sanitary problem. And totally heartbreaking 💔

The Ristorante Tarì in the old city offers a stunning, picturesque view and a serene square. The wine selection is delightful, and the octopus salad is truly outstanding. However, the fried fish with vegetables falls short due to being overcooked and lacking variety, mainly comprising of potatoes. Additionally, they only serve stale bread upon request and charge for water, which leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.
A great spot in the old town of Scalea, great food that you can pair with all sorts of wines as the owner has a great selection. Everything is always fresh, loved the oysters. Francesco and his partner are amazing people that know how to make customers feel right at home. It’s been 3 years now that I always go back with pleasure.

Nice but specific taste of fish dishes with tomato sauce in Calabrese style. Very slow service. Poor comunication. Servants just going around tables and looking above. Nice place on square with excelent view on the city and sea.

Place in the historical center of the city, there is a rich selection of fish and wine. Very professional staff will help you choose and tell you which wine is better to choose with the dishes. If you don't eat meat, they can prepare a dish without meat for you, that's what I did, it was very tasty. There are also very tasty desserts, a very nice restaurant that I will visit again.

It’s located at a cute square but that was the most positive thing with our experience here, unfortunately. Service was bad, it felt like they were all annoyed and in a bad mood. The staff is what gives this 3 stars. After dining there 3 times, we've decided to not go back sadly. The seafood was always overcooked, the pasta extremely undercooked, and the food was bland. It's too bad, because the location is lovely and the staff is very attentive and friendly.

Seafood restaurant
Nautica Lo Scoglio is a seafood restaurant that attracts visitors during their siesta hours, seeking a bottle of prosecco. Despite heavy rain, the staff warmly welcomed customers, creating a clear and inviting atmosphere near the beach. This establishment stands in stark contrast to larger hotels like S. Caterina, where patrons may experience frustration and disappointment.
Excellent! Expensive but worth it, quality of food is insane, fair price for this amount. One of the best desserts ever, especially the one with cedro. Service was really friendly and welcoming. Astonishing (!) view, highly recommended for special occasions. Thanks and see you again!

Nice place, beautiful view. We were informed of getting some fireworks on top of the sky. Therefore, we asked for our food but they decided to deliver while the fireworks were still going on. Which means: we didn't even taste the food yet because no one were helping us- I asked help for 3 guys that worked there, they said "wait a moment" and never returned with a answer. The owner/ A guy from the restaurant asked us for new plates, but again, the service was too late to deliver our food.. we lost appetite. I'm not sure if I'd like to recommend this, please pay attention to fireworks and if there's any fireworks in the future, please DO NOT deliver the food while the fireworks are still working on.

No need for menu if there's a sustainable approach: offering a limited choice of dishes, pure fresh ingredients of the day. You can taste there's passion in the kitchen and in the way you are welcomed in this restaurant. I love the human approach, the "We could fix you some...as a vegetarian variant if you'd like?" Seated in a peaceful, quiet spot just on the edge of the old town, you're avoiding crowd and can enjoy some quality dining on your own. Come, try and get satisfied.

(Translated by Google) Located on the outskirts of Scalea it allows you to get rid of some of the traffic in August. Ideal beach for families with small children. Very quiet and well attended. 0 music with summer hits or annoying animation like in nearby Paradise where it's a torment ☆ Compared to the average of the other beaches I have seen, the umbrellas are further apart, which is very important for privacy. The beach is clean and tidy. There is a play area for the little ones and inflatable storage with free compressor packaging ☆ There are cold and hot showers for a fee, the cold one costs 20 cents but the great idea is that the colored water pipes pass over the pergola, preventing the ice water from arriving ☆ Under the pergola made with bamboo canes it is always cool. There are masonry tables where you can have a picnic/lunch prepared by yourself and also plastic tables and chairs; this prevents the neighbor from the umbrella from bringing out baked pasta, croquettes, coffee and coffee killer ☆ Ideal for families as it lacks the group of 16/23 year olds who are usually noisier and more disrespectful. There is a solarium with sun loungers overlooking the sea. Each umbrella is associated with a covered parking space included in the price which, given the Calabrian sun, is much appreciated. The staff who manage the lido are very helpful and friendly, in particular the girl, I think the owner, very smart and capable of her job also in enforcing the rules of common coexistence ☆ Prices from 13 to 20 Euros depending on the queue. Lower prices with monthly subscription. Only the foot shower needs improvement. Next year definitely same Lido.

Torre Cimalonga, a striking round structure built in the 1400s, stands as a testament to the region's rich history and defensive architecture. Once part of the city's fortifications, it now serves as an archaeological museum showcasing fascinating ancient artifacts that tell stories of bygone eras. As you stroll towards this historical gem, don’t miss the Gio Pub nearby—though often closed, it’s rumored to offer delicious food and breathtaking views for those lucky enough to catch it open.

The White Club Scalea lido is simply flawless. The staff members are highly professional, welcoming, and attentive to the needs of their customers. The establishment offers relaxation areas, even in shaded spots, where patrons can enjoy delicious beverages. The cuisine is commendable, with a wide variety of delectable options for both first and second courses as well as desserts. The bathrooms are impeccably clean at all times of the day. Furthermore, the prices are reasonable and honest.
(Translated by Google) Excellent experience, from the beach service to the restaurant. Very kind staff, welcoming environment, music and large space in which to eat. I recommend the spaghetti with three tomatoes. Every day on the menu there are also the offers of the day and the pinsas. Fair prices. Very clean and well-stocked bathrooms. Parking in the shade. (Translated by Google) It's a small beach resort, very clean, tidy, and well-organized. There's a parking space with some shade at the entrance, and the ever-present beach bar, which also serves as a restaurant at lunchtime. There are also restrooms, showers, and a changing room. Most importantly, it's dog-friendly! We'll definitely be back next year. E poi: toilette, docce e spogliatoio. Importantissimo: dog friendly!! Torneremo sicuramente il prossimo anno.

I was extremely impressed by the appearance and cleanliness of Giò Pub, located in Scalea. It boasts the cleanest restroom in all of southern Italy. The ambiance is stunning, with a beautiful setting that offers great views while enjoying your meal. The staff at this pub is superb, providing excellent service to their customers. The owner himself personally attends to the tables, showcasing his exceptional skills and attention to detail.
I ended up at Giò’s pub after walking around Scalia a bit trying to find something for dinner. In Italy, everything Seems to fall into two categories, street food or fine dining. As soon as you walk into Giò’s, you notice the casual atmosphere. Families and young people enjoying time together with burgers and food free of pretense. I had the jalapeño poppers and a burger that I almost couldn’t finish. The topper? Ice. I got a glass of ice for my Coke. Lol, as an Americano it’s the small things in Italy that matter. I really enjoyed the energy of the customers and the service kept up with a full house. Bravo!

Strange service. Was told that cannot sit inside because staff (who included 8 people) did not have the capacity to serve people both inside and outside (was rather empty).

I was very impressed with the appearance and cleanliness of the pub. The cleanest bathroom in southern Italy. We all had the Gioburger, excellent. I thought the service was good, the owner came to the table and he was very good. The waiter was okay, we wanted the AC on and the wife didn’t like his attitude. The experience was positive and I recommend it and will return.
