The Petrifying Fountains of Saint-Nectaire offer a unique experience, allowing visitors to explore a petrifying cave and witness the process of petrification through volcanic springs and manufacturing workshops. The tour provides insights into the craftsmanship that has been passed down through seven generations for over 200 years. Visitors can learn about the techniques used to create sculptures and artwork, with informative explanations available in multiple languages. The visit is described as quick but allows for leisurely exploration of the caves and fountains.
Fascinating experience, so clever and so much history, very friendly staff..well worth a visit.

The pictures don't do it justice, it is a truly unique form of art combing the use of mother nature, technique and patience.
Megue R — Google review
Very interesting site. However there are too many people in each tour and the explanations take too much time.
André — Google review
Interesting to see how sculptures were made through petrifying. Not to mention this has been done for over 200 years through 7 generations! Explanation was clear and available in booklet form in English, Dutch, German, etc. Be aware the first film is only in French and theres not much explanation about it in the multilingual booklet. Overal, learned a lot from this visit. 10/10 would recommend this unique place.
Bella S — Google review
Amazing place fot.an amazing art/technology I never knee existed. Check the opening hours to make sure you have enough time to take the entire site.
Sophie T — Google review
We did not expect much from the petrifying fountains of Saint-Nectaire and we have been stunned by the tour. The visit is relatively quick but you can spend time at your pace to admire the caves and the fountains. It was very informative and we learnt a lot about the techniques used to create the art work. It could be a pricey and expect to buy something at the end in the gift soft. Recommended for everyone
José C — Google review
A really interesting visit with a lot of information in English and the multi lingual guide answered all our questions. Fascinating and unique; worth every cent!
Janet B — Google review
I need to say that we were welcomed with very inappropiate behaviors towards our children. The set up is appreciable and it is obvious that lots of hard work has been put into the building, though the exhibition is very much about art. The productions are amazing but I was more about the caves themselves and geological formation which are a very minor part of the visit, despite the advertisement.

Small, but pleasant casino where the local community often offers shows, plays and concerts in a comfortable, cosy theatre. This is very popular with the people living around the village.

(Translated by Google) We came for a mussels and fries evening with 80s music. We made a reservation for 8:30 p.m. There was no atmosphere; the couple in charge of entertainment only played soft music on their sound system. I hope the service was free for the casino. As for the restaurant, we waited 45 minutes before being served after our complaint. The staff was very nice but overwhelmed because only two people were there to serve. The mussels weren't cooked. Only cooked in their own water. Not a shallot, an onion, aromatic herbs, or even a little white wine. They were bland, and the mussels, which weren't in their own juices, were dry. It was a real shame because the teaspoon of ratatouille was well seasoned. So they do have herbs in the kitchen. The plate of fries was sparse. In the end, for a meal costing 14 euros, not including drinks, and normally with entertainment, you could be really disappointed 😞. Service at 9:30 p.m., and by 10:15 p.m. we were home.

Initially it's accessible (road) but there are two sections (stony forest path++ and meadow with tall grass) which are absolutely not passable. My partner had to carry the stroller in his arms for 800m and I had to carry the baby in my arms. For that I'm only giving 2 stars because it's unacceptable to say that it's passable! Too bad because the dolmen is pretty and the walk too but I really didn't appreciate that we could emphasize the fact that it's passable when it's NOT.

A classic turn off experience: no communication (do they want you to leave or actually have dinner, since it is called a restaurant) rudeness(Non, no service at the terrace, except for ALL other tables), lazyness (ditching the cutlery at the table, so arrange it yourself). Conclusion: If you need to channel your anger do go there otherwise be sure to reserve at the restaurant accros the street.

Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Grottes du Cornadore, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Les Mystères de Farges. All together, your day would be filled with about 6 hours of non-stop fun.

Tucked away in the lush surroundings of Saint-Nectaire, the Grottes du Cornadore offer a fascinating glimpse into history and nature. Discovered in the early 19th century, these caves are carved from ancient granite that dates back an astonishing 340 million years. The organized chambers and warm springs suggest they may have once served as Roman baths, adding to their allure.
What a wonderful educational visit. The chap running it was friendly and, though he did not give the tour in English, provided us with a cheat sheet so we could follow anything we didn't understand in French. He spoke very clearly and not too fast however so I was able to follow with only a little use of the cheat sheet. The tour itself is fascinating. Well worth a visit, but mind your head!

A bit disappointing tbh. Small and tired looking. You get imprisoned at the end in the pokey shop for a while, while the guide tells you how long it takes to make the junk they sell.. a poor man's version of the things on sale at the Fontaines Petrifiantes down the road.

If you are in this area is worthy, but not worthy to do a trip to see the Grottes. They are small and they seem to had been a small Roman bath only. Not guide in English. They only speak in French. We got a paper in Spanish with the info to do the visit.

Boring as all hell. Just short 30 meter tunnel, followed by a room, accompanied by 40 minutes of French babbeling with the tour guide speaking not even a single word English. Do NOT go as a non-French person. Actually, just don't go at all.

The Church of Saint-Nectaire is a stunning example of Romanesque art in the Auvergne region of southern France. Perched on Mont Cornadore, it offers breathtaking views and perfectly balanced architecture made of beautiful lava stone. This 12th-century church is part of the five important churches in Auvergne and features a fine set of Romanesque capitals and medieval art.

Zélia G — Google review
Dominating the small village of St-Nectaire-le-Haut in the Auvergne region of southern France, Saint-Nectaire Church dates from the 12th century. It contains a fine set of Romanesque capitals and a treasury of medieval art. Located on high ground and surrounded by lush forests, the stately church of Saint-Nectaire towers over the small village of St-Nectaire-le-Haut. Its situation is somewhat less attractive from close-up, as it is now surrounded by a small lawn and paved parking lot. The church is constructed of local trachyte stone in various shades of grey, arranged in attractive patterns. On the apse, the stone is cut into a fine inlaid pattern of stars inside circles. Similar decorations can be seen on each end of the transept. The church's highest point is the octagonal crossing tower, topped with a pyramid-shaped roof. This dates from the 19th century, as do the twin square towers on the west facade. From the east, there is a fine view of the flat "lantern" transept, the semicircular apse with inlaid stars, three radiating chapels, and an apsidal chapel on each transept arm. Overall, it is a striking and impressive sight. The interior is an attractive space with many details of interest. The nave is supported by round columns with carved capitals, some retaining traces of original paint. Among the subjects depicted on the capitals are the Temptation of Christ; Moses being saved from crocodile-infested water by Pharaoh's daugher; a donkey playing a lyre and a man riding a goat; and St. Baudime slaying a wild bear.
Joao E — Google review
A very well-preserved example of an Auvergnat church, and unusual because it is a pure example of the unique style of Roman architecture in the region. Built in 1146, a feature is the large numbers of stone "chapiteaux" decorating the tops of the columns in the church

The Educational Park of Saint Nectaire offers a range of activities for families, including the Thermadore pool in Saint-Nectaire, the zoo in Ardes-sur-Couze, and hot-air balloon flights nearby. Visitors can enjoy interacting with animals such as kangaroos, wallabies, and coypu while also having the opportunity to learn about them. The friendly staff provides informative tours in English and ensures that the animals are well taken care of.
I really like the concept of this little wild park. There is first an area that you can explore for yourself, with goats, marmots, a wolf, ... It's not large, but the animals have a lot of space, look healthy and you can feed them with snacks bought at the entrance. At the end there is an area with wallabys and nutrias for which you get a guided tour first with a lot of information. Since my husband and I do not speak French, the keepers where so kind to give us an extra introduction in English and answered all our questions. They were very kind and very caring about the animals. You can pet the nutrias and the wallabys. It was great fun for the kids around but also for adults and I learned a few new animal facts 😀

Love it! Saint-Nectaire Educational Park. 🫠Come and discover, feed and touch some of the animals. 👍Also attend two immersive activities with the myocastors and the wallabies. 👍Created by enthusiasts, this park offers an immersive experience where visitors can observe and interact with myocastors, which are semi-aquatic rodents native to South America, and Bennett's wallabies native to Australia. 👍This park aims to educate the public about these often misunderstood animals through guided tours and explanatory panels. 👍Visitors can feed the animals while learning about their habitat and behavior. 🌟The park makes a point of raising awareness about protecting biodiversity and respecting animals. 👍A shop and a sweet snack bar are available for visitors. 🌟A large part of the park is accessible to people with reduced mobility. 🌟A “Caregiver for a Day” pass allows you to immerse yourself among the animals and take part, for a morning, in the profession of animal carer (by reservation only). Further information) : Snacks (ice cream, waffles, drinks) available at the end of the visit 👏They speak English! 👋Location details - In the countryside From 11 € / adult. The location is really fantastic in a grove in the middle of a grassy field. I walked from Verrieres, about 2 km one way. You can park at the end of the village, where the dirt road starts. The road is not suitable for normal cars, and anyway the last 400 meters are a small path. The walk is very pleasant under the trees. (Translated by Google) I received a very warm welcome, even before 5 p.m. ;) (I'm a hiker and I had given advance notice). The building is old, but it's very well maintained, and the rooms are very clean and have quality bedding. Breakfast was a sweet and savory buffet. Finally, the owner kindly gave me recommendations for dinner. A great stopover to get back on the GR this morning. Thank you. Merci.

(Translated by Google) A very nice hotel with more than adequate rooms. Basically, it has everything you need for comfort. The breakfasts are really nice and the owners are fantastic people. It's clear that if I return to Saint-Nectaire, this is the hotel I'll stay at again.

(Translated by Google) Everything was perfect! Unfortunately, it's located quite far from the GR30, so we went there on the advice of locals and we weren't disappointed. The staff was absolutely lovely, the room was clean, and the breakfast buffet was perfect for a great day of hiking. All this at an affordable price, of course!

(Translated by Google) We only spent one night there... And fortunately!! The hotel is out of time!! Everything is very dark and the room and corridors smell musty The slightest step and everything creaks, the TV is as big as an A4 sheet...the carpet everywhere...the colors yuck The breakfast is not worth the price!! Nothing!! it's a real shame because if a real renovation and real motivation were undertaken this hotel would have great potential. In any case we will not come back!!

(Translated by Google) Following our visit to the town of Saint-Nectaire, we decided to visit this tea room/regional produce store. As for the food, we were delighted with the drinks and desserts: very good, not too sweet (for the cappuccino and pastries), and reasonably priced. Being able to enjoy coffee on the terrace with a view of the Saint-Nectaire church is a significant plus. As for the regional produce store, we also found what we were looking for and were able to leave with products at very reasonable prices. The location is unique (and beautiful), the furniture and terrace decor are very tasteful, and the owners are very warm and friendly. In short, a place that ticks all the boxes: 100% recommended!
