Specialty Museums
Eldheimar is a museum located in Westman Island, Iceland, showcasing the complex nature of the business environment. The museum features more than 400 buildings buried under lava from the 1973 eruption, with a special focus on one house excavated from 50m of pumice.
Lovely museum and very informative about volcanoes and the tragedy that they can cause. Such an interesting island, definitely worth visiting!!!
Kay W — Google review
We're not usually museum people, but we had some time to kill on the island before our ferry departed so we went here. It was great actually. Loved how the museum is built around a house that was mostly destroyed by the eruption and there were lots of great videos and displays. Spent a little less than an hour there as the place was closing and it was about the right amount of time to see it.
Stephen L — Google review
Excellent museum. It was aesthetically beautiful and well laid out. The headset guided tour was very good and available in many languages, not just English and Icelandic. We learned so much about the island from this museum, and it provided greater context to everywhere we went on the island. My 6 year old was a little scared once we started getting into the sections about the eruption itself (because the storytelling in the audio tour really is compelling) but there was an inactive sand thing for him to play with, and that occupied him. Don't forget to check out the upstairs section about the Surtsey explosion too--- that was also fascinating :)
Kathryn H — Google review
This museum is built on the site of the 1973 eruption of the Eldfell volcano. The remains of a home destroyed by the volcano is at its center. It provides audio and an immersive, multimedia experience to convey the volcano's horrific impact on the community. It also celebrates how the island worked together to rebuild. There are special exhibits on the second floor.
Barb ( — Google review
We were really amazed by the detailed depiction of the eruption and how the people of the island fought against it.
Marko K — Google review
Interesting subject matter and the display of the excavated home was cool to see. But the displays were flashy but lacked clarity. Lots of noisy displays that really did not add to the information. Overall I would rate this as a "meh" experience as it was pricey. More impactful to us were the ash poles sprinkled around town and the partially buried house just outside of the museum.

Heimaey, the main inhabited island in the Westman Islands archipelago of Iceland, offers striking scenery and unique activities. The 1973 lava flow created a Mars-like landscape known as Eldfellshraun, with otherworldly hiking tracks leading to Skansinn fort and the area where the lava meets the town's houses.
The ferry ride approaching this island was spectacular, and it was only a short 40 minute ride and you are able to take your car with you. Heimaey is the largest island in the Westman Islands, and the only one that is inhabited. We drove the entire island a few times with many stops with so many photo opportunity. Stunning and unique landscape. We hiked Eldfell volcano, and walked along the paths by elephant rock that is right next to a beautiful golf course, and we visited a lighthouse. We also enjoyed a few beers at the local brewery and ate at a local restaurant. Great experience that we will always remember.
Maria P — Google review
Such a beautiful, quaint island. The puffins are incredible! It is a 9 minute ride from the ferry terminal to see them. Drive up to the top, and walk along the fence. Enjoy. Remember to go early in the morningZ

Amazing little island to visit!! Really worth the detour! There are amazing restaurants and breweries and the ferry ride to get there is really beautiful!!

Amber D — Google review
Beautiful and stark island. Hiked the volcano, and rode ATVs on it, literally over part of the town that was covered in lava 50 years ago. Amazing to see lava that rises above a neighborhood where it stopped in the backyards of some homes.

Short visit at Vestmannaeyjar oktober 24/25th. If you plan this right than you can make the most of the island in only one day. The town on this small island i hidden between rocks and vulcano's🌋 On the island you can see what happend to the town Heimaey when the dramatic volcanic eruption in 1973 happend. Part of the houses have ben covered with ash since the eruption. Some of the excavated houses you can see at the museum Eldheimar. The museum is build around the houses. You can take a guided audio tour and listen to the story about what happened during the eruption. It's a amazing story. Not boring at all. In the museum are a lot of interactive displays and photos. Eldheimar is the Pompei of the north. It's a time capsule of the seventies during the twentieth century. Further more you can see the puffin colony. Those little puffns are something to see. On the island is also a Sealife trust being the world's first Beluga Whale sanctuary. They have a puffin rescue center where you can come up close with puffin's. If you are in for some more action you can take a world famous rip boat trip around the island. Explore the stunning untouched nature. One of the highlights is the elephant rock formation. #westmanislands #Vestmannaeyjabær! #Vestmannaeyjar #IJsland #iceland #Heimaey #island #eiland #vulcano #vulkaan #helgafell #vuurberg #travel #travelphotography #photography #vacation #shorttrip #boattrip #eldheimar #eruption #puffincolony #puffin #sealife #belugawhale #ripboat #untochednature #highlights #elephantrock #wanderlust

Woke up to full on rain at Vatnajökull National Park on day six in Iceland. Quickly came up with plan B while eating breakfast in the car and drove to the south coast to catch a ferry to Heimaey Island. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), an archipelago formed by underwater volcanic eruptions. So glad we did. Heimaey has such beauty, history, and puffin sightings!

Gott is a popular restaurant in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, known for its amazing vibes and great food. The eatery offers a hipster atmosphere with fast and friendly service. Specializing in healthy, organic fare, the menu at Gott changes with the seasons and features fish sourced from local catches daily.
So, afternoon, too early for dinner, distant to fill up but wanted some senses-appealing tastes! No better place! Wowza! We had nachos and the cheese appetizer that was more like a salad, but packed with flavorful bits of delight. Ordered drinks and was advised our waiter was the best at making a coffee flavored martini… why not! So glad we did, this place excels in food, staff, decor and lively vibe. Get there, NOW!!!
David K — Google review
I enjoyed the atmosphere and decorations. It has the option of sitting outside in good weather which is great. The service was very professional and kind. The menu has a good variety from hamburgers to very good fish pan. It has good illumination from the windows and lights. I ordered the fish pan and it was delicious and well served. Another person in my group ordered a hamburger that was good quality. The price was normal for Iceland.

Stopped in while visiting the town. What a pleasant surprise! Great food, large portions and good cocktails too! We especially loved the burrata salad (pictured). Anyone in Vestmannaeyjabaer should definitely eat there!

Excellent meal and very accommodating with dietary restrictions, and also kid-friendly, with good options for our 4 and 6 year old (a chicken wrap and homemade chicken nuggets, with a side of broccoli and cucumber). I had the honeybaked cheese, which seems like an Icelandic staple and was delicious, and the grilled chicken. The vegan peanut butter chocolate bar was amazing. It’s a great choice in a walkable part of town.

When visiting Vestmannaeyjar, make sure to stop by The Brothers Brewery, a small craft beer brewery that has received numerous awards for its exceptional beer. You don't have to be in the capital to enjoy great Icelandic beer. The brewery offers tastings where you can sample a variety of brews and explore their new Ale House. It's a must-visit destination for beer enthusiasts looking to experience the local craft beer scene outside of Reykjavik.
Great Beers at The Brothers Brewery! I tried DIPA (#9) and IPA (#11), and both were really fresh and tasty. The DIPA had a nice strong flavor without being too heavy, and the IPA was crisp and smooth. Today there was a festival going on(I guess), which added a lively and fun atmosphere to the visit. The brewery was buzzing with energy—definitely a great spot to enjoy quality Icelandic craft beer and good vibes! Plus, you can order delicious pizza to go along with your drinks, making it an even better experience. Definitely recommend stopping by if you want to taste some top-quality, fresh brews!

A lovely place for a pint – just a few minutes away from the main port of Heimaey. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Help yourself to some deliciously fresh popcorn. A variety of beer styles and collaborations we encountered. A cold taster flight of 4 beers runs about 3.000 kr. Check ‘em out!

Was looking for a local micro-brewery to try and found this very nice place with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The beer was good and the service as well. They have free popcorn and a QR code on the table to order wood fired pizza from another local establishment as a food option. Also have free wifi.

Eyjatours in Iceland offers a puffin and volcano tour that provides a great overview of the island. The tour guide, Ebbi, is passionate about the island and its history. He not only runs the tour but also works on converting a Viking stone house into an educational venue for children. The tour is recommended for solo travelers as well and provides insights into historical and cultural aspects of the island while offering sightings of puffins from a distance.
The Puffin & Volcano Tour with Ebbi is a must-do 2-hour tour in Vestmannaeyjar! Ebbi is so friendly, fun, entertaining & knowledgeable while taking you through his entire hometown. We got to enjoy the natural beauty & culture of Iceland including a tour into the Viking history. Super fun & unforgettable. Thank you Ebbi!

Did the puffin and volcano tour, Ebbi was a great guide, took us to all placers to see on the small island, had a lot of jokes. Visited the puffins, so cute! Would take another tour with Ebbi any given time. Visited some real 'viking' houses, learned what 'sprangan' means, wnet to 'thez most windy place in Europe' Great tour!
Ju P — Google review
Amazing tour! Highly recommend. Our tour guide was so much fun and humorous and entertained even my kids age 11 and 13. I learned so much on the tour and got to see all the great spots on the island. We saw lots of puffin, so that was definitely the highlight, but really the whole tour was a perfect thing to complete our trip to the island.
Catherine B — Google review
My family of four thoroughly enjoyed Ebbi’s tour. His sense of humor, local roots, and easy style were greatly appreciated. My elementary school aged daughters loved learning about puffins and volcanos. Well worth the time and money, highly recommend for your consideration.
John M — Google review
Thank you, Ebbi, for a world-class, two hour tour of the island your family has called "home" for hundreds of years. I really appreciated both your humor, and your local knowledge, from the Viking houses to the "Puffling Patrol."
Chad K — Google review
Wonderful tour! Worth doing if you come to Iceland! Learned a lot from Ebbi! He was quite funny and entertaining! Got to see so much of the island! And the puffins were so fun to see. Also wanted to mention that we miss-estimated the time it would take to get to the island (based on the ferry times) and arrived 20 mins late due to this. They were kind enough to take us in another van to join the tour (that had already started), and we were so appreciative of that. We would have been so sad if we had missed it! Thank you for accommodating us! Had some amazing pizza and beer after the tour, while we waited for our return ferry. Be sure to check ferry timings before you book tour so you don’t make the same mistake we did!
Viraj C — Google review
This short tour was absolutely worth it, packed with interesting stops and great information throughout. The group size was just right, making for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The real highlight, however, was Ebbi. He’s a true character (in the best way!) and his passion for his town truly brought the tour to life. He made all the difference. We would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area.
Jocelyn T — Google review
The Puffin and Volcano tour was an excellent way to explore Heimaey's many sites. Ebbi was an excellent guide and so very knowledgeable as an actual 'Islander'. His demonstration of the cliff climbing for eggs was impressive (particularly in the rain). Even in inclement weather, the tour was amazing and a definite 'must do' for anyone visiting the Vestmannaeyjar!

Great service y nice ambiance to sit down have have lunch or dinner

I tried whale steak here for the first time, and it was perfect — very flavorful with a rich, slightly fatty taste that was surprisingly delicious. For dessert, I had the apple cake with caramel, which was also excellent. A great dining experience overall

Delicious soup on the soup and salad bar :) it's very nice to have the dairy-free things clearly labeled. The people working there were all incredibly friendly. Great view of the harbour, too :)

Truly enjoyed the excellent soups and salad bar ( 3 soups, bread with 4 types of butter, and salad/wrap ingredients). 2,390 Kr per person, no drinks. We tried the cauliflower soup and the sweet potato soup, both delicious. We saw some orders of ribs at another table and they looked great! Right on the harbor in Heimaey.

the resturant looks welcoming at first but when its your turn to order and the staff come to take your order they start cooking your order immediatle and force you to pay and rip you off with sky high prices and are EXTREMELY rude and kick you out. I was literally in tears when I walked out. NEVER EAT HERE. Absoloutly miserable😔
Emil J — Google review
Came here for lunch when we get off from the ferry, I ordered bacon burger and it comes with curly fries which was very tasty ( hot & crispy), the burger also tasted delicious, however I feel it had bit too much mayonnaise. The service was very good. I also came here for the a cup of coffee in the end of our trip ( waiting for the ferry). The coffee was very strong, I like it especially during the very chilly windy day. The cheesecake tasted ok, bit too sweet for me. I think it’s still a pretty good restaurant in general.

We were a group of nine and had a diverse range of dishes from the menu at Ranya Kebab. The food was excellent, with generous portions that contained ample amounts of meat. However, the fries were slightly disappointing as they were overly saturated with sauce from the chef, which some of us did not enjoy. Despite the grand Viking sign outside, it's important to note that there is no beer available for purchase here.
We were warmly welcomed and didn't feel rushed to make a choice. We got the Ranya platti and the Pitu Platti. Both were fabulous and generous with their meat. I loved the pita bread with lamb plate. They grilled the pita so it was crisp when you bite into it. Tastes a bit like thin pizza crust. Sooo good. And I loved the creamy garlic sauce and hot sauce on my fries. Perfect amount. Not drowning in it, just enough. It was the perfect ending to our trip around the island. I have to say this kebab place is even better than the places we have at home in the US. I hope this establishment stays and continues to do well. Really solid, delicious food and affordable for Iceland prices.

Great experience. My wife failed to say she’s dairy free when we ordered and so her order came with yogurt based garlic sauce. When the order was brought to our table, she saw the sauce and asked what was in it. When she explained that she couldn’t eat it, the server immediately said they’d remake it. Since the error was entirely ours, their response was especially gracious and much appreciated.

We were a group of 9 and had a wide selection of the menu. All dishes were great and portions were quite big with a large amount of meat in them. The fries was a little disappointment. Einsi Kaldi is a top choice for those seeking a luxurious dining experience on the Westman Islands. The restaurant offers delicious food made from fresh local produce, with the chef's innovative touch evident in every dish. Signature items like monkfish and lobster showcase modern Icelandic cuisine. Visitors can indulge in delightful dishes such as duck bao bun and reindeer carpaccio with langoustine, all served in a friendly, modern, and cozy atmosphere.
Before this restaurant my experience of food in Iceland wasn’t too good. Although it pricey, the food and drinks were amazing! We tried course A and B and liked everything. Mojitos were very tasty too. Special thank you to the male server for taking order earlier and super quick service since we had to leave for the boat. If I was back to this beautiful island I would definitely be back to eat here!!!

We had been on the island for a week getting to know everyone and was saving Einsi Kaldi for our last night. We made a reservation for 8 and showed up promptly. We were seated and given a bottle of water, but no glasses. We then sat for almost half an hour with no one even making eye contact with us. No one came by to take an order or even bring us glasses. We eventually left.

Einsi Kaldi is the best restaurant on the Westman Islands. The duck bao bun and reindeer carpaccio with langoustine (pictured below) were delightful. The ingredients were clearly all quality and above that the service and atmosphere was friendly, modern, and cozy. This is THE place to go if you’re looking to enjoy good Icelandic food with a twist after looking at the puffins.

If you know me, you know I can be lured just about anywhere with the promise of a good dessert. We finished off the day with easily our best meal in Iceland. They let us make a last minute reservation for a three course meal...I wish we would have time for the full 5 course meal. What got us there was this: ‘New Style Skyr Panna Cotta and Blueberry...blueberry merengue, buttermilk cream, blueberry sorbet and white chocolate.’ Needless to say it did not disappoint. The rest of the meal was just as good. It was a three-course meal and I tried things that I wouldn’t have normally tried. I guess it made me have a greater appreciation for the art of food preparation. It also helped that we had a cute table in the corner near the window. Anyway, with each course the chef came out to explain what we would be eating and then returned to the table to make sure we liked it and was even generous enough to take a picture with us at the end of our meal. For those curious here is what the appetizers and main courses were: Vennison Carpaccio w/Langoustine wrap garnished with roasted garlic, dill, walnuts and mango; Shrimp and Scallops garnished with cauliflower, lotus root, chioggia beet, and yuzu mayo; Beef Tenderloin w/ small potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, parsnip, zucchini and served with a mushroom sauce; Roasted Lamb Hip with asparagus, small potatoes, carrots, kale, and cauliflower purée; finally, the second dessert was a Creme Brûlée Doughnut with vanilla cream and topped with chocolate sauce, salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. If you ever find yourself on the Westman Island stop by and give this place a try.

Day 2

Center of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the center side of town. Start the day off with Beluga Whale Sanctuary, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Herjólfsdalur. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

The Beluga Whale Sanctuary, located in the Westman Islands archipelago, is a must-visit for marine life enthusiasts. It is the world's first whale sanctuary and also houses a puffin rescue center. The sanctuary is home to two 12-year-old Beluga Whales named Little White and Little Grey. Visitors can explore the Saeheimar Aquarium, which features live fish, enormous crabs, and an array of marine animals including puffins and seals.
The Beluga whales were the highlight of my whole trip. The sanctuary is quite small with a few interesting exhibitions (fish, star fish, puffens), but I was all about the whales. Spent a few hours just watching and even playing with them. They seem to love people and to show off. We had a chat with a staff member who told us lots of interesting facts about them and allowed us to pop out for lunch and come back again. Unforgettable experience. I can't wait to see updates in the future.

Sea life trust is not a sea life where animals are used to amuse humans. The two beluga whales have been rescued and this is there home. You won't see them everytime, we were lucky. The puffins which are there are also rescued. Don't expect something like a zoo. You support something good.
Sofi G — Google review
This was a fantastic expeirence and definitely a highlight for the Westman Islands. I am a vegan and all about animal ethics. I did extensive research ahead of time and felt very comfortable and assured with the conditions and care the animals receive. The beluga whales have been rescued from a water park in China and while they cannot be released due to living in captivity, they are no longer used for entertainment. They are actively working on rereading them to a bigger bay in the islands, that can still be monitored. We got to see both of then coming up to the window while there. We saw the 6 puffins and 1 other bird. We went around 3pm and saw them feed and swim! It was very cool we got to see all the action happen. These puffins have certain injuries, so they cannot be released, but we're very well taken care of. The rest of the area is an aquarium with other sea life. I asked about this and they said they had taken over the space that was previously an aquarium, so they care for all the animals that were there before. You may question the price, but the proceeds go to support the conservation and care of the animals, so it's all worth it! Highly recommend!

Two whales, watched through one not so big wall. Do your thinking of worth the price (3750 isk for an adult). Puffin sector was under renovation so it isnt available. Nice stuff in the gift shop.

Very small, hardly any fish in the aquariums. Tank is small for the two belugas. Wonder why they are not permanently in Klettsvik
Hulda2002 — Google review
The idea and work at the sanctuary is great. Pufflings and puffins which need help are being treated. Only those with physical impairments stay in the sanctuary. You can also see the belugas little grey and little white. They even seem to have a small bay but it’s unclear when they are there and not in the pool. You can support the sanctuary by adopting either a puffin or a beluga.
Jenny P — Google review
The tour was £20 a head and tells the story of how the money is for charity and is used to save the beluga whales from a life in captivity. A story is told about how whales aren’t supposed to live in captivity and that it is horrible for an animal. Around the corner from this is the two whales living in captivity in a pool with a window that you can observe them. Seems a lot like an aquarium to me not a sanctuary.
Jake B — Google review
I'm generally not a fan of seeing animals in captivity. But on a trip to the island too early to see Puffins nesting, we decided to check out the few being rehabbed at this spot in the harbor. They were sweet and pleasant. It was great to see how well they were taken care of and to read about all the sea life on display. The whales were playful this day, hamming it up for our cameras. We had a great time.

Restaurant
Slippurinn is a popular restaurant located in an original workshop factory by the harbor, drawing both locals and tourists due to its high-quality cuisine. The restaurant prides itself on celebrating Icelandic cuisine and locally sourced ingredients. Housed in the oldest concrete building in town, it offers a fine dining experience with a warm and comfortable ambiance. The menu features dishes prepared with passion using a variety of local ingredients, including gluten-free options.
If you don’t like lamb or fish, I’d skip but otherwise it was great. The three course menu was just enough food. It may seem small but it was more than enough. Comes with bread as well. Good summer cocktails. 5/5

Wow!! Best meal in Iceland! The food was perfect!! So delicious! We had the fish soup, cod wings, panfish of the day, fish of the day, and lamb at our table. Every single thing was amazing. This is their last summer in business, so get there quick!!

One of the best dining experiences I ever had. Very creative dishes from local ingredients and great cocktails. Amazing vegetarian options too. Very much worth the price, we will be back before they close for good.

Truly we just visited the island of Heimaey because of the Slippurinn. We had an amazing 8 course dinner with local dishes and ingredients & each course had its maximum of taste explosions. As a starter we had some really good cocktails with local herbs from the island which were so special and extraordinary in their tastes. We definitely enjoyed the kitchen and recommend everybody to go for a visit when you’re traveling to Iceland - experience this journey of new tastes. Also the staff was very kind and courteous. We’re looking forward to come back again! :-)

Had a really great 9 course meal with fish. Each dish carefully prepared. Very great dinner and staff was friendly. Nice atmosphere.

Best lamb I've ever had - such wonderful combination of different tastes. The different fish dishes were also great. One service star removed for giving us alcoholic beer instead of non-alcoholic beer, although they had the same name. Overall it was still amazing. Just be very clear about your allergy.

Absolutely stunning food. One of the best you can find in lceland. Although restaurant is not the cheapest one, it's worth all the money. Probably the best is to take there set of 8 dishes where you can try different tastes all composed from the local food. Service in this restaurant is very professional and super friendly. It's highly recommended to book table in advance. It gets really busy in the evening hours.

The monkfish and the lamb were delicious, and cocktail menu very creative. Hard to have anything less than amazing atmosphere on this island in the summer. Definitely go for the whipped skyr dessert.

Natural history museum
Sagnheimar Natural History Museum is a small but fascinating place with an interesting collection of stuffed birds and animals, videos on puffins and catfish, and fish tanks showcasing Icelandic fish. It's a great spot for families as there are often puffins to be seen wobbling about. The museum also serves as an informal bird hospital. Visitors have the opportunity to meet rescued puffins up close and personal, although holding them is no longer allowed due to their waterproofing.
A nice little aquarium. 3 rooms total with displays of the wildlife in the local area. Most of the displays consist of stuffed birds and fishes. One room with live tanks and a touching pool. The stars of this Museum are the rescue puffins. Unfortunately you are no longer allowed to hold our power the puffins as they lose their waterproofing. :( still worth a visit.

not a whole lot of fish, but super fun! There were two puffins and a baby puffin that were rescued. We got to meet them and pet them.
Igobyzoe — Google review
We left Los Angeles and travelled all the way to Iceland, in large part to come here. To see puffins. And we did. And it was so worth it. We had been following on the internet the adventures of Toti for some time, but he was taking 5 so we met Hafdis. She was just magnificent. We just sat down on the floor and watched her play with her receipt. I could've stayed all day. And the docent overseeing Hafdis was a most knowledgeable and interesting woman. She answered all of our questions with such ease and obvious care (her English, btw, was so good you might mistake her for a native speaker). Anyone in the area must stop here. Oh, upon returning home we read the sad news about Toti's very recent passing. RIP, Toti.
James S — Google review
Interesting aquarium, even if it is quite small. But hands down amazing to meet a little puffin up close and personal!! If you have time to visit the island it's worth the trip here!
Laurie H — Google review
A great little museum with sea creatures and birds from all over the world. The real attraction is the little puffin Toti that walked around like he owned the place. You can't pet him but he's right there in front of you. You don't need more than an hour here.
Cam H — Google review
Like everyone here is saying, you have to meet Totí! He was so adorable, you can take pictures with him, and then he followed us around the museum because he was lonely on his table. Can't say much for the museum because all I could pay attention to was him!
Morgen W — Google review
Awesome little museum for such a small island. Interesting aquariums and lots of information on the puffins. For $13CAD ea, it gives you the chance to see some live rescued puffins. If in the area it's a must see, especially in the winter, as there is no other way to see the Puffins!
Brian F — Google review
This is a small aquarium, and might feel a little disappointing if you are expecting something big. The main attraction is Tođi the puffin, and his nee friend. It is the easiest way to get to see a puffin up close and personal. There is a 3 museum pass that gives admission to the other two museums on the island. I really enjoyed all 3 and was glad I got the pass.

Herjólfsdalur is a hidden gem located near the popular Elephant Rock. The hike starts from the golf course and leads steeply up the nearby hills, offering stunning views of the natural amphitheater with impressive rock formations. The walk along the top ridge provides breathtaking scenery and opportunities for great photos. This challenging hike rewards hikers with majestic landscapes and a chance to spot puffins along the way. The area also offers clean camping facilities, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts.
The scenery is majestic as all these other posts have stated. This hike is pretty challenging as it's high elevation. I went around 9 am. Protip: If you didn't see any puffins at Storhofoi, there is a medium sized colony about 15 mins up along this hike. The nest is near the walking path. I got some great shots at 4x zoom on my phone.

🚢 The ferry to this island was one of the highlights of my trip! It’s like a discounted boating experience - but walking around was beautiful. The little town is super quaint, and kind of felt like a Black Mirror episode because no one was in the streets 😆 so it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves (we took the 6pm ferry to the island on a Saturday). We didn’t get to do the volcano hike but walked here instead and had a great time!
Kevin M — Google review
Beautiful views all around from here. We stopped to use the restrooms here (which were surprisingly large and clean). Very nice spot to relax for a bit. We saw trash cans, picnic tables, hiking paths, and a small playground there.
Sam K — Google review
Area has great views but so do a lot of other areas in the world. The people on the ferry and the Island itself act like they don’t want tourists. No puffins, just a lot of cold wind. Some views are the same but warmer in New Zealand (also a lot less expensive).
SAM A — Google review
The views are amazing but getting up there can't be done by everyone. Signage on top and a good map of the area in the parking space mentioning all the different sights and how to reach them would be very helpful.
Daniela B — Google review
An absolutely stunning landscape! I giggled most of the time there because it was just so unbelievable. Amazing hiking, a very cool golf course, and incredible views of the ocean are only part of the charm. You have to see it to believe it.
Nicholas W — Google review
Nice attraction... a little bit of history, very cool replica of the first stone home, and several wax characters depicting life in Iceland at about the 10th century.
David H — Google review
I've never been to a campsite before this one and this had to be one of the cleanest places I've ever been to (and I'm germaphobic!) The communal house was CLEAN and WARM. Even the bathrooms were super clean, warm and didn't smell at all. They actually smelled good since they had some essential oils in there. I can't express how clean this place was and am still in shock, I'd camp again just for this place. In terms of payment, I tried calling via wifi and it didn't work but eventually a guy came knocking on my door at night and we were able to pay him with a card so don't worry if you can't figure it out when you get there.

One of the best meals we had during our trip to Iceland. Located in Vestmannaeyjar, it is a true gem. The fish is as fresh as it gets—wild caught and prepared with real care. Each dish felt thoughtfully balanced, perfectly seasoned, and never overdone. You can tell the chef knows what they’re doing. Simple, honest, delicious food. If you're in the area, this is definitely worth a stop. Staff was super friendly and inviting. PS: give their Kombucha a try, won't let ya down
Marc — Google review
Recommended by our ATV tour guide Mar, it was a tough call between several really great options for dinner in Vestmannaeyjar on Heimaey Island. Tasting menus always reel us in, and this was a no-brainer (the næs experience). Næs literally means 'nice' in Icelandic (slang, borrowed from English)... From their website: "Næs means nice --- food made from scratch from great produce, ideal to share" I can't help but think Borat would be proud of a place as niiiiiice as næs. The catch of the day was cod, and the summer beet and white fish crudo was crazy good. I had never tried dukkah before, but I'm hooked. So much flavor in the traditional Middle Eastern nut, seed and spice dip, but spiced, not spicy; we saw many menus with hazelnuts sprinkled throughout in Iceland, and this was no different. The hanger steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and must have rested because that sucker was juicy. Helga (raspberry sour ale produced by Borg Brugghús in Iceland) and Viking lager (regular beer) helped us wash down our healthy helpings and no dessert pictured because the entrees had us walking the plank. Doggy bags for the sweets.

Best gastronomical experience in our 10-day trip in Iceland. The food, “Fish of the Day” was simply delicious and very well presented. They have a very smart idea to keep kids entertained. All in all 100% experience!

LOVED this place! We came early, without a reservation and it paid off. Seated by the window with a glass of wine, watching the tasting menu starters being prepared in the open kitchen meters away within 5mins of arriving. The tomato burrata salad was the best I've ever had in my life (!!) and the romesco with flat bread was jaw dropping. Everything was fresh, prepared thoughtfully and singing with flavour. But it was our waitress Embla who made our experience unforgettable - taking the time to chat to us, recommend wines and even share top restaurants/food in stockholm (our next destination) while being the only service staff scheduled in a full restaurant. She is a queen!!! Thank you thank you thank you, I cannot wait to come back.
Cat C — Google review
This was the best meal I've had in Iceland! We all had the full course service which includes 4 appetizers a main course and a dessert, all of which were phenomenal. The arinchini were perfectly crispy balls of cheesey gooey deliciousness. Our next course was an incredibly refreshing bowl of smooth creamy stratechella and crisp cherry tomatoes finished with basil olive oil. Next was the crown jewel of the menu, the lamb kofta, soft crispy and incredibly well spiced served on a flat wrap with pickled onions and a savory orange sauce. We were then served a very light dish of finely diced fish in mayo sauce under a refreshing layer of thinly sliced radish. Our main courses were a fish of the day and hangar steak. The fish was served in large portions, perfectly seared, served in another delicious savory orange sauce. The steak was also well seared, served in strips medium rare seasoned with another delicious house steak sauce. The steak was served alongside these incredibly creativly prepared square fries composed of layered crispy thinly sliced potatoes. Finally we were treated to a warmed slice of perfectly ripe pear served with a phenomenal homemade vanilla ice cream toppped with finely ground sweet breadcrumbs. A truly excellent dining experience, I would love to come back someday!

By far the best food we had during our one-week trip to Iceland! We had the fish of the day and it was amazing. I’m so glad that we chose to dine in at this restaurant! Highly recommend if you visit Vestmannaeyjabær.
Nana N — Google review
Not a lot of places that can bring a whole trifecta of experiences. Staff were friendly, beer was excellent (we had the Viking beer), and the food was exactly what the doctor ordered. We had an almost hummus type dipping sauce with the flatbread that had Dukkah which is apparently a mix of herbs and nuts. Finished off with the Fish (catch) of the day -pan fried monkfish topped with shredded green apple and paired with a salad and fried celery root, all on a bed of a celery cream/tahini sauce. Cannot recommend this enough!

Tvisturinn is a popular establishment in Iceland that has been providing islanders with delicious hot dogs and an assortment of treats since 1988. This authentic corner store offers a variety of fast food options such as burgers, pizza, fish, fries, and more. While the food may not be considered the best on the island, it is still a convenient place to grab a quick meal. Tvisturinn also serves ice cream that is highly recommended by many patrons.
Top notch hot dog 🌭. Not sure why this place doesn't have at least 4.4 stars minimum. The hot dog was delicious, budget-friendly, and one of the best I've had in quite awhile (and I'm from Chicago, where we eat a lot of hot dogs)

This local eatery is celebrated for its delicious and satisfying fare, featuring a variety of options such as meatballs, fish stew, and the iconic Icelandic lamb. For those craving something quick yet flavorful, Krain offers an array of burgers, fried chicken, and long sandwiches known as Eyjabatar (Island Boats). Our waiter was super friendly and grew up on the island. He even helped us to plan how to spend our afternoon on the island and recommended a hike that we all loved. Day 3

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Sundhöll Vestmanneyja. Not quite as popular as Heimaey, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Swimming pool
Sundhöll Vestmanneyja is a popular destination on the volcanic island of Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland. The town swimming pool offers both indoor and outdoor facilities, including shallow and deep areas for swimming, diving boards, hot tubs, a cold tub, water slides, a climbing wall, and more. Visitors can also explore other attractions on the island such as the lava museum, lava tubes, boat tours, local brewery, and great restaurants.
Incredible pool, so far one of my favourites in Iceland. The music on the 16th & 17th of April was so nice. Takk fyrir to the DJ 🤙
Elisa C — Google review
The staff were super lovely here. They helped me in English as I didn’t speak Icelandic which I really appreciated. However I was a disappointed with the facilities. The head/back massagers didn’t turn on, the slides were all out of order, there didn’t seem to be any water circulation in the pools so there was debris floating on the surface. There was rubbish around the kids pool and there were only about 10 ppl total there while I visited for 2 hours so it was hardly busy. The cold plunge wasn’t in action ie just empty. I get it, winter is a good time to repair stuff but would have been good to know before going in. The showers in the changing rooms were only luke warm and the entire outside area was so slippery and most pool entrances covered in ice! It’s my 12th time in Iceland but haven’t come across this before? Would give it another chance but can’t say this visit was up to scratch.
Anna S — Google review
Fantastic pool, especially for families with kids. Several water slides, an over-water climbing wall! This pool was my 8-yr old's favorite and great for adults too. Outstanding steam room.
Cory C — Google review
Visited this pool for the first time and for the most part it was very nice. This is until I was yelled at by one of the lifeguards for having my phone at the pool. I am an avid traveler, I always try to adhere to the cultural and religious norms of the locale. The signs were ONLY in Icelandic. As you can see, not even visually depicting "No". The whole pool got quiet. After he left, several strangers asked what happened and why he did that. If you don't want Non-Icelanders, Black people, or for the public to be there....then say so. Iceland (my 2nd visit) is amazing and I've never felt any different, very welcoming. I was the only person of color there and I'm assuming why now. The manager was emailed and notified of this incident, acknowledged, apologized, and stated it should not have happened that way. He stated Atli№ Rafn№ Hreinsson* should have been more respectful and they have been notified of the graffiti. I'm not assuming the whole Vestmannaeyjar is this way, but here's my review of the pool.

Great swimming pool with nice temperature and possible to low dives. Water slides and other playing possibilities. Two hot tubs outside: 40-41 degrees Celsius and 42-43. All fresh water are coming through water pipes in the sea from the mainland.

Beautifull volcanic island with a lot of attractions like the lava museum, lava tubes, boat tours, local brewery and great restaurants. It is a must see destination if you are in that part of the country. Just make sure you book the ferry in advance in the high seasson. The prices are a bit higher but worrth every penny.
Petar S — Google review
Best pool in iceland. There's no competition. Inside pool: shallow area for swimming and a lane reserved for playing deep area has a diving board and space enough to play around in. Outside area: couple hottubs, cold tub, shallow pool with a little island and waterfall, climbing wall next to a small waterslide, 3 Lane waterslide and last but not close to least is the trampoline waterslide!

Elephant Rock is a stunning natural formation located on Heimaey Island in the Westman Islands archipelago of Iceland. The rock was formed from basalt during the eruption of Eldfell and is situated at the end of the island's coast near the sea. The area surrounding Elephant Rock, known as Eldfellshraun, offers numerous hiking trails amidst vibrant blue and purple blooms in the summer.
Elephant rock is a unique basalt rock formation on the island of Heimaey that is shaped like an elephant surrounded by other sea cliffs and it is amazing to see. It is very easy to view and to capture that perfect picture. It is located by a beautiful golf course. There is a place to turn off the road and park with a path to walk safe away from the golf course. If you are in Heimaey you need to make the time to see this unique rock formation.

Beautiful scenery. Watch out for golfers

Elephant Rock was a stop on our afternoon bus tour around Heimaey. It's close to a challenging golf course by the cliffs. Our guide explained that this basalt rock formation was created by a volcanic eruption of Mt Eldfell over 15,000 years ago. The rock looks like a wrinkly elephant head dipping its trunk into the ocean.

Had the trip here a few months ago. Definitely one of the most memorable moments of my life. Took the boat tour to see the Elephant rock. It was an amazing ride, awesome staff and amazing music! We took a small detour to see some orcas, such an amazing experience. Definitely recommend this as one of your places to check out while in Iceland.

Giagantic as the name suggests. Turquoise blue waters that you could stare at for hours, unswimmable though. Be careful while walking over the rocks as they may get slippery while it rains

Golfklúbbur Vestmannaeyja

Golf club
Golfklúbbur Vestmannaeyja offers a unique links-style course with stunning ocean views, including sights of Elephant Rock and nesting puffins. The layout is challenging, with longer holes than the stated yardage and a front 9 set in the remnants of a volcano. During nesting season, golfers may encounter aggressive birds but can easily navigate around them. The course is well-maintained, providing a great experience for players.
Had an incredible experience at this course. The course itself is stunning and so unique. The person who helped us was so friendly and helpful. Made it so these 2 canadians could have the best experience possible and we absolutely did! Unfortunately we can't remember the persons name who helped us but we are very grateful for their hospitality, and cannot recommend this course enough!

Just an all around amazing experience. Pro shop took the time to squeeze me in as a single with a limited timeline for the ferry. Rented some clubs and got to experience a gorgeous course that was in good condition. Visiting Westman islands for the day? Play some golf. You won’t regret it. Plus maybe they will give you a puffin to throw off the cliff.
Kirk B — Google review
A stunning, challenging and tight golf course. And it's worth every penny. A 40 minute, one-way ferry to the island is pleasurable and the course is a gem in such an unsuspecting place. Karl's hospitality was great. Do not pass this up if you are in the area. I hope to one day go back.

Played may 2023. Got there around 7p, played till 10:30. Views, backdrop were 10/10! Clubhouse was under going renovation. Was alone on the course and enjoyed the setting sun around holes 12-14. Only issue is the tee box and slamming in hole 17? I think, par 3. Completely worth the drive and ferry ride!!
Ben S — Google review
Biggest golf course in Iceland. You can see Elephant Rock and Puffins! The view is incredible. The staff was so friendly and gave us directions on where to go to have even better views.
Kerstin B — Google review
This was the most beautiful golf course I have have ever played, or will play for that matter. I can't say enough good things about it's beauty. As for the course layout, it was quite challenging. The holes seemed to be longer than the stated yardage. The front 9 was fun because it was mainly in the remnants of the volcano. The back 9 was jaw dripping with several holes skirting the rocks and ocean. 17 was challenging par 3 with ocean and lava rocks between you and the green. I managed to land my shot just short of the green. The staff was very friendly and prices were quite reasonable. Was lucky enough to play a round with my family. Hope I can play here again someday.
Evan T — Google review
Great experience, greens were in good shape and layout was a lot of fun. We played during nesting season and had to dodge a few aggressive birds who were nesting but that was fun in itself. You apparently hold your driver over your head and the birds think that’s your head and charge that instead of your actual head. We learned to just move shots away until the birds settled down. The holes along the ocean are really spectacular. Well worth the time.

Incredibly windy (but it’s Iceland, what are you going to do) incredibly scenic course! Seemed like they were renovating the club house. Very helpful to an American noobie golfer who needed to rent clubs.

Church
Stafkirkjan, also known as the Stave Church, is a remarkable black wooden church located on Heimaey Island in Iceland. Situated along the waterside with imposing cliffs in the backdrop, this secluded church offers a picturesque setting for visitors. Although it was closed to visitors during a recent visit, it still provided an incredible photo opportunity. The church is constructed with vertical timber walls and adorned with vertical planks, reminiscent of early Christian churches in Northern Europe.
Just a neat experience. The church is amazing and the interior rivals the exterior. There is a hall you can walk all around the interior of the church.

Stafkirkjan (Viking Stave Church): What a cool little history lesson stopping by the Viking Stave Church near the Vestmannaeyjar harbor on Haimaey Island. A gift from Norway celebrating 1,000 years of Christianity in Iceland, this church is a replica of the Holtdalen stave church built in 1170, now residing at a museum in Norway. The original settlers brought wood with them to establish Christianity in Iceland, making their plea to the world's first parliament (Althing) and landing first in the Westman Islands. Stunning views of the sheer cliffs skirt the harbor, lava flow from the 1973 Eldfell eruption blankets the landscape, and you'll leave feeling like you stepped back in time a bit. SKOL!

Sagnheimar Folk Museum is a must-visit attraction in Vestmannaeyjar, offering a unique insight into the island's history and culture. The museum showcases various intriguing episodes, such as the annual festival's significance, the 1627 invasion by Ottoman pirates, and the migration of residents to Utah after converting to Mormonism.
Pleasantly surprised with this museum. Not what I was expecting. Make sure you purchase the tickets for all 3 museums on the island as it gets you a discount and all museums are worth visiting. Each one should take about 30 minutes to an hour or more. Exhibits about the way of life on the islands and some stories of historical events. Very well assembled and excellent, knowledgeable staff. Highly recommend this museum.

Some of the things in the museum don't have English translations, but they're just a few. There are many things to be seen here: a list of people who moved to Utah with pictures and their old and new American names; an illustrated story about a Turkish pirate pillaging; fisher's rooms and equipment; boat replicas

A little strange when we entered at 19:30 h and it was completely empty. Nevertheless we were greeted by a very friendly waiter who is blind (kudos to his skills or my ignorance that I only realized that after the main course was served). We ordered Pizzas and my wife and the kids loved it, mine (C4- a spicy one) was overloaded with cream cheese. So all in all a little bit of a mixed bag but the friendly staff saved it.

We'll, what started off as a seemingly good night, turned into a nightmare. Me and my good friend originally went in there to get a pizza pie. We were advised that the Cook had called in sick for the evening. No biggie. It turns out, the owner and another patron were able to make a connection and have a few drinks together and enjoy our time. Until we found out that the owner, kept bringing us heineken would end up charging us for all do them, including the ones that he drank. Let it be known, I had gone down to the street to bring back some food, probably $100 worth, which the owner had no problem gorging on. Everything was fine, until he dropped the random bill on is. So yeah, buyer beware, what seemed like good people, turned into a walk down a Mexican time share run in the airport. Pretty sketch place. Slick move though, pretend to be your friend, bring rounds out, then charge people for those rounds. Careful, not a lot people roll thru there in the winter. And watch out for predators

Food was fair compared to the price level. The restaurant is nice and clean and with good bathroom facilities. But the service the day we visited was unacceptable. There was barely any other guests at the time, and still we waited a long time just for the menu. I took nearly 27 minutes to get the drinks and the rest of the order arrived 25 minutes after the drinks, acceptable, but compared to the waiting time from the time we ordered until we got the food I took nearly one hour.

The restaurant, Canton- Chinese, offers excellent cuisine that is both delicious and speedy. The service provided is satisfactory, although there may be some initial confusion regarding seating arrangements. Compared to nearby establishments, the prices are reasonable considering the generous portions served. If given the opportunity to return to Vestmannaeyjar, one should definitely explore their extensive menu. This establishment stands out even though it operates in a remote location on an Icelandic island with a small population.
This was the first time we went to Heimaey. After a busy day sightseeing we were hungry for Chinese food. We followed google but ended up at a restaurant called Sealand fish restaurant. . We almost didn’t go in. BUT we decided to look at the menu. The food was fantastic! Yes we had Chinese food. The wolf fish kung pao was the best! We wish we could eat it again. I think it is post summer tourist season so the hours are short. If you find yourself visiting this was a great place to eat! They have more options than Chinese food. The owner was friendly and interesting. Definitely will visit again.

Eldfell, a 200-meter-high volcano, unexpectedly erupted in 1973 on the Westman Islands, causing a major crisis. The eruption led to the evacuation of Heimaey and resulted in the expansion of the island's size by one-fifth. Mount Eldfell was formed during this event, and hiking to its peak is a must-do activity on the Westman Islands. Visitors can explore walking trails that showcase original streets and buildings buried by lava flows.
We had a fantastic hike with breathtaking views. It took us about an hour to complete, and I highly recommend it.

Andrew D — Google review
A not-insignificant hike, not that long but given the small volcanic gravel and the fact that it’s very steep, it’s easy to slip. Very worth it for the most amazing views in Vestmannaeyjar though, and best paired with a visit to Eldheimar to learn the history of the volcano and the island! In fact, best trail head is right behind Eldheimar.

The hike to the top is short but not quite as "easy" as I expected based on reviews. The path is quite steep and eroded in spots, so hiking boots with a good grip are recommended. But anyone in decent shape can make it up, and it is totally worth it for the amazing panoramic views atop some of the newest land on Earth.

A well marked moderate hike with a bit of a steep climb. A good pair of hiking shoes with a grip would be helpful. Many loose volcanic rocks, and the winds can be strong. When you make it to the top you will have an amazing panoramic view with a great look at the town, sea and volcano all amazing colors with the lava rocks. So many great photo opportunities, it is well worth the effort of the climb. This hike can take up to one hour or more.

We went here for breakfast and coffee while waiting for our ferry back to the mainland at 11. We tried savoury and sweet things and everything was great. The Cinnabons were particularly nice. The bakery is frequent more by locals (eating both in and out) than tourists, which is a positive sign in my book. There are two spacious toilets which were very clean and provided paper towels. Of course there is also free Wifi.

We ordered several items and had mixed results. Cinnamon scone, chocolate coconut ball and swiss mocha coffee were very good. There were also clean bathrooms and spotty WiFi. A warning to vegetarians, they add ham to many of the savory pastries so be sure to ask about contents for even the most innocent looking pastries. We're considering returning for the soup and and bread lunch special which sounds very good.

Urðaviti Lighthouse

4.5
(53)
Observation deck
Urðaviti Lighthouse is a must-visit spot in Westman Islands, offering a unique and beautiful experience. The lighthouse stands on a huge rock formation, providing a suggestive and quiet atmosphere. Despite not being the most popular lighthouse in Iceland, it offers a magnificent scenic view that includes waves crashing against an arch and stunning island vistas. Accessible via a gravel route, this location is especially captivating when windy. It's definitely worth exploring for those who appreciate natural beauty and tranquility.
Google took me past this lighthouse, but I saw a path to drive up to it so I didn't follow Google. They are doing a lot of road work on this island and that may be the reason for Google not sending me to the right area. It was pretty cool to climb up to the top for amazing views and to get some great pictures. This lighthouse is so different from the many that I have seen in Iceland. I enjoyed being able to park right up to it and to climb to the top. I enjoyed that experience.

Fairly cool lighthouse. There is a lot of contruction/heavy machinery work going on nearby which made it a little eerie to get here. Really nice views.

Really great spot to watch the sunrise. Went in mid September so the sunrise was still over the mainland. Great views of the rock cliffs and ocean below. Road was a little rough from construction and road maintenance.

I found an alternate route to Urðaviti Lighthouse that isn't marked on standard maps. This path is a bit off the beaten track and requires a 4x4 vehicle to navigate successfully, but it's completely worth the effort. The usual road access is currently blocked due to construction activities for a salmon farm, which can be a bit of a surprise for first-time visitors. If you're up for an adventure and have a suitable vehicle, this alternative route provides a fantastic opportunity to experience the scenic beauty en route to the lighthouse, bypassing the construction disruptions.

Scenic view at the lighthouse . Need to go thru abit of gravel route

They are building some kind of fish farm and the road is gated off so you can no longer access it.

Vöruhúsið is a family-owned restaurant that focuses on using fresh ingredients to create a diverse menu. While their specialty is pizzas, they also offer pasta, various starters, burgers, tacos, wild mushroom risotto, chicken salad, and the fish of the day. The restaurant has received top ratings for its affordable and delicious food. It's known for being kid-friendly with a designated play area.
We had a great meal here, whilst waiting for a later ferry than hoped. The prawn tacos were great and my husband had the prawn pasta, which looked delicious too. A nice kids menu as well. Very good value for money.

I hardly ever write reviews but this was the best meal I had in three weeks in Iceland. I traveled the Ring Road and plenty of spots along the way but this meal and place stands out. I got the corn ribs and chicken salad. The “ribs” were the best corn I’ve had in my life. So inventive and so much flavor. You HAVE to get them. The chicken salad was a mouth party. This is what salad is supposed to be. So flavorful. Phenomenal. Pics are of the corn ribs and salad before and after the presentations you can see how yummy it looks under the topping.

My husband and I concluded that it was the best fish and chips we ever had in our lives and we live in the UK. Give these guys a Michelin star so people would come here to try it! The tacos were also delicious and well balanced.

I was there last weekend with my children. Pizza was so good. Then I had beef salad, very tasty and my oldest daughter had mini tacos. The price was lower then I expected.

We were short on time for lunch, but arriving at 2 PM worked in our favor—the restaurant was quiet and uncrowded. I ordered the fish of the day, a beautifully prepared cod, and it arrived almost instantly. The first bite was unforgettable: tender, flaky, and so fresh it practically melted in my mouth. As Iceland’s most iconic wild catch, cod holds a special place in the country’s culinary heritage—and this restaurant delivered it at its absolute best.

When you have had your fill of Cod, Hamburgers, and pizza head here. While they have those items and I am sure they are amazing, the Beef Cheeks are out of this world and a welcome change from typical fare.

Delicious food! The fish of the day and the burgers were both amazing – fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Very good prices considering Icelandic prices!😄Highly recommend!
