Corbridge in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Corbridge, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Corbridge is a handsome historic village on the River Tyne, known for its stone houses, independent shops and inviting pubs and cafés. Just outside the village lies Corbridge Roman Town, one of the key sites on Hadrian’s Wall, with excavated streets, granaries and a museum of Roman finds. St Andrew’s Church and other medieval buildings add to its historic character, while riverside walks and nearby countryside make it a pleasant base for exploring Northumberland.
With favorites like Hexham Abbey, Corbridge Roman Town - Hadrian's Wall, and The Pele, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Casa Rosso Corbridge and Little Mexico so you can get the best taste of Corbridge while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Hexham Abbey, located in the historic market town of Hexham, is a must-visit with its long history and captivating architecture. Founded as a Benedictine Abbey in AD 674 by St Wilfred, it has endured periods of turmoil and change. The current building dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, incorporating stone from the nearby Roman fort at Corbridge. Visitors can explore the Anglo-Saxon crypt and climb the worn stone 'night stairs' for panoramic views.
I was impressed by the beauty of the building and its surroundings. The historic architecture and peaceful atmosphere made for a lovely experience. The staff were also very pleasant and welcoming, adding to the charm of my visit.

Visited in August while in Hexham. A surprisingly beautiful and ancient abbey. It was freezing to enter but a donation is requested, but not mandatory. You can also pay £3.50 to down into the crypt. Well worth a visit if you in the area.
Michael M — Google review
Lovely Abbey Church in a town also worth visiting. Very beautiful building with lots of interesting things to see( view photos). No entrance fee but you can give a donation either by card machine or cash. Very peaceful place with seperate chapel for private prayer.
Reg — Google review
Absolutely fantastic abbey that is vibrant, active & well worth the entry fee. We paid the extra to go down the steep steps to the original crypt from 673/4...the crypt itself was built from recycled stone from a Roman bridge at Corbridge. Roman carving & inscriptions are clear to see in the stonework. When we visited GAIA (a revolving globe art installation) was in the abbey. It looked fantastic. As a bonus the café was lovely & on a sunny day sitting in the courtyard would be bliss.
Howard H — Google review
Lovely place to look at. Unfortunately we arrived late in the day so only got to enjoy the exterior of the building. They were ringing the bells which was nice. Next to the abbey is a park and the railings of the park are covered in knitted/crocheted poppies which was beautiful to see. Well done to those who made the poppies.
Sharon R — Google review
So beautiful. We have English Heritage card but if you don't, I would still recommend buying a ticket to look round
Rachel — Google review
Beautiful welcoming Abbey. We were warmly greeted and welcomed into the Abbey. Beautiful building, free entry but you are able to donate (which I recommend). They also have a shop, cafe and toilets. I found this a very accessible please with on street disc parking nearby. Worth the visit.

A lovely Abbey. Friendly receptionist at the entrance taking tickets to see the massive Earth display. Take a moment to reflect on one's life through our planet Earth and our fragile ecosystem.

Ancient Ruins
Corbridge Roman Town, located on Hadrian's Wall, offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman life. This ancient garrison town was once a bustling hub for legionary soldiers and civilians to stock up on provisions. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins of granaries, workshops, and temples while imagining the vibrant Roman high street that once thrived here.
This was the second Hadrians wall venue we visited in one day (making use of the English Heritage membership!) It was surprising how different it was to the previous one. The kids had a little activity trail and it was really interesting to see the layout of the roman town! There is the option of getting a guide device (talks to you about elements of what you are looking at). The site has a parking area, although the lane running up to it is only wide enough for one vehicle, so you have to be a little careful. The site also has visitor toilets which was a must with the small people.
Andrew C — Google review
Absolutely amazing place to visit. 10th of whole site uncovered. Brilliant audio to go with the site. Free car park. Toilets in the car park. Lovely informative museum. Friendly staff.
Jackie R — Google review
Excellent place to visit. We arrived just in time for a free guided tour, 2.30pm. Paul, the guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the site and the areas Roman history in general.
Reg — Google review
Well worth a visit. The free audio tour enhances the outdoor experience and the timeline and indoor museum certainly helped with wider context. Helpful staff too.
Anna S — Google review
A fantastic visual display of story telling around Corbridge's Roman history. The exhibition to start with was very interesting and the remains of the Roman town are easy to relate to with the audio tour which is included. Take an audio jack for headphones to best take it in.
Allie P — Google review
A splendid museum, full of artefacts and very informative displays . The town itself is extensive. To best understand it and its history and evolution over time, use the free audio guides provided. They are excellent.
Duncan P — Google review
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The audio sets were great and explained everything in detail. And the museum part was fantastic, showing just how advanced the Romans were
Wilma M — Google review
Well worth the visit! The free audio guide is excellent and adds to the outside experience. The Museum timeline and exhibits provide a great overview of the Roman habitation in the area.

Breweries
Located in Corbridge, The Pele is a historic fortified tower that once served as the residence of the Vicar from the 14th to the early 17th century. Today, it has been transformed into a charming micro pub with a small bar offering craft beer, ales (including The Pele ale brewed exclusively for the pub), wine, spirits, and filter coffee/tea. The setting is reminiscent of scenes from Game of Thrones or The Last Kingdom.
Visited about a week ago on a pub crawl. Amazing converted Peel Tower - possibly the only one that's been converted to a pub ? Owners have certainly done a fantastic job on the conversion. Set over 3 floors (see pics), couple of keg ales on (possibly key keg real ale but it doesn't really matter). Not sure of the food offering (if any). There's a single unisex toilet. Just noting if you have mobility issues the upper levels won't be accessible due to the historic nature of the building. Recommended 5🌟 from Matty 💛

Fantastic place!!!! The history behind the place, the drinks, the atmosphere - can't ask for more. Cocktails have a generous amount of alcohol. Seasonal mead is absolutely delicious. Upstairs, there is a beautiful seating near the fireplace. And the stuff is so lovely and friendly! We've been back many times. Thank you for keeping this historic building alive 🙏
Елисавета С — Google review
We didn't eat, but the tea was grand, and my beer was superb. They have a massive selection of bottled beers. It is a joy to sit in a still functional building that was built in 1318! Not the best place for tall people, and I doubt the stairways would be great for fat folk either. Great atmosphere, lovely staff, and a German radio station for background music.
Paul S — Google review
My wife and I visited yesterday where we we were very well looked after by Alex. I tried the 2 on draft beers which were excellent, as well as their expresso martinis. Finally I bought 3 of their local beers (mix and match) for £13.50 which is very good value. I would definitely recommend a visit.
Jonathan S — Google review
What a wonderful place to sit and have a coffee, in my case, but plenty of others having an alcoholic drink from their vast selection and Craft/ Guest beers too! The building has 3 floors within the old Pele (Peel) Tower. Very creatively decorated too. Do visit if you’re around the area. Nice chap running it too btw.
G F — Google review
There's nowhere quite like this... quite possibly the most atmospheric pub I've ever visited. It's not the biggest inside but there are plenty of nooks and crannies so it's not hard to find a place - with seating across three floors. Almost feels like if an English heritage or National Trust site became a wee bar... very special.
Patrick C — Google review
Really unusual and unique but also so friendly and genuinely welcoming. Many thanks especially to amazing Ashley and regular Mark who made us laugh so much. Beware the stairs but well worth it for a weird and wonderful climb back into history and wee nook of comfort and cookieness
Hazel G — Google review
Wow! What an incredible place. It really is unique. It's on several floors, with a mezzanine level. Steep, tight, concrete, original stairways leading to different floors and rooms. So we'll decorated. Live music, on certain evenings and times. A selection of wines for sale on the groundfloor, as well as a lovely bar area. Barman was welcome and friendly. Loved every bit of it !!

Pub
Restaurant
The Black Bull is a charming 18th-century inn located in the heart of Corbridge, Northumberland. Housed in a traditional building dating back to 1755, it exudes a cozy atmosphere with blooming flower baskets in summer and warm coal fires in winter. This rustic establishment offers traditional British pub dishes and real ales, including special curry nights. It's also known for being dog-friendly, making it an ideal spot for families and pet owners to enjoy delicious food and welcoming ambiance.
My husband booked lunch here to meet our friends, and we had a lovely round table. The interior of the pub is really nice, and both the food and service were excellent. The staff were attentive, quick to clear empty glasses, and always checked if we wanted more drinks. Highly recommended if you’re in the area!
Ian D — Google review
So the beer garden and staff were lovely. One dish however spoiled what would have been a lovely lunch. We’d had the risotto here before and it was lovely. This time it was awful. Dry fried rice with peas, overcooked fish and bouncy scallops. The issue is once you have to send food back a lunch is ruined as one person has to wait whilst the others feel guilty eating. Refunded the plate no problem but should have been better. Waiter did try to say that the chef may not have used cream to explain why it was drier than the Sahara. My wife mentioned that it did say “creamy risotto” on the specials menu….. Was a shame.
Nick S — Google review
Have been here a few times on our holiday here - both for a drink and to eat - and I have to say that it’s been a consistently good quality. Service is friendly and efficient and food is definitely at the superior end of the pub food spectrum. Sunday lunch was great (and HUGE) and the lamb shank shepherds pie and toad in the hole were both super. Nice selection of cask ale and a decent wine list. I’ve been disillusioned with Greene King since they destroyed Loch Fyne (an annoying tragedy) and a couple of poor pubs. This place suggests it is all about who owns/manages the individual establishment. And these folks are good. Highly recommended
Michael C — Google review
After reading the reviews on the Black Bull regarding the food on offer we decided to go here for our lunch probably wasn't the wisest decision we have made lately...🙄🙄. On entering we were approached by a very welcoming, polite member of staff who asked where we would like to sit then handed us the menus we sat at a table then choose Toad 🐸🐸 in the hole 🕳 & chicken🐓, leek and cheese 🧀 pie. That's were the description and reality separated. The sausages in the toad in the hole were hot and tasty but the skin was a bit on the thick chewy side the Yorkshire pudding batter was more like tough shoe 👞 leather and totally inedible. The chicken 🐔 leek & cheese 🧀 pie was extremely dry with the chicken being dry and tough the leeks were burnt and bitter overall again inedible. Now, before the manager decides to offer his/her apologies for our disastrous lunch & that we should have discussed our issues with the staff, I'd ask him/her to consider that the problem started in the kitchen hence this review. Definitely not our best experience in a Green King establishment. I've given the ⭐️⭐️⭐️ that's one more than I'd usually give but the staff made up for the food experience.

Everything was brilliant. Prompt, friendly service. Burger was the best chicken burger I’ve ever had! Gorgeous food. Will definitely be back.

A regular visitor to the black bull when in corbridge, we never knew there was a pretty lil beer garden at the back all this time 😂 food and drinks usually spot on, prices fairly mid-high range, but generally always good service and friendly staff. Can be very busy at weekends so worth booking online for that.
Hannah W — Google review
Black Bull has always been a reliable watering hole with a decent reputation for food. Sadly, the food is not what it used to be. The standard and offerings have all gone down, no doubt fuelled by owners Greene King tightening the purse strings and offering less for more. My 2 slices of roast pork were dry, and one was coated with a gloop of gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was flat and chewy, and the accompanying veg portion came straight from the school dinner playbook. See pic. I will not be eating there in the future, but I will pop by for a relaxing drink.
Kevin P — Google review
Love this pub. Food is top notch and the service staff are a real good bunch. We take the family once a month and are never disappointed. The Wellington down in riding mill has the same menu but is inferior in service amd food for some reason. The Wellington is not a bad pub...just the bull pulls it off better. Lovely clients, historic building, Sunday runners are sound, recommend the chicken and bacon burger with all the trimmings. Even the bairns do not finish it up....and a nice pint!

Known as the prettiest racecourse, I would agree. We went hospitality for my husband's birthday and the staff couldn't have been more helpful, both leading up to the day and on the day itself. It is a small hospitality compliment, so would suggest booking ahead of time. We were successful from a waiting list. They even put a birthday message in the racecard. Would certainly recommend!
Rita M — Google review
I attended Hexham as an owner for the first time today. Most picturesque track I’ve been at and I loved the grass slopes and the amazing views of the track and the scenery beyond the track. On the downside, I waited in the queue for around 30 minutes for my entry badge, was going to miss my race (the first race). There were still a lot of people ahead of me so I had to brass it and managed to get in without a badge and managed to catch the race. Really not good and I’ve never experienced this at any of the tracks I’ve been to before, and there have been many. I managed to go pick up my badge after the race but if security had been tight I would not have made it in time for my race. Also, the gentleman managing the barrier at the entry to the parade ring physically pushed me back to lower the barrier. Very very disappointing experience and something the track management need to review, specifically the entry process.

Fabulous chilled atmosphere, I was also over the moon to see so many people arrived with their dogs. I wasn't aware that you could bring your dog to the racing. I was very impressed with the amount of vets around to help if any horse had any problems before or after. Happily they were not needed. I enjoyed using my camera for the first time In a long time, building up my confidence again.

Nestled in the picturesque village of Corbridge, Casa Rosso is a delightful Italian restaurant that promises an authentic culinary experience. This charming eatery offers a diverse menu featuring traditional Italian dishes, complemented by an impressive selection of fine wines and delectable desserts. Open daily from noon, guests can indulge in seasonal specials or enjoy lunchtime offerings. For those who prefer to savor their meals at home, Casa Rosso also provides a convenient delivery service through Just Eat.
This restaurant offers an exceptional blend of authentic Italian cuisine and high-quality steakhouse dining in the UK countryside. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a strong focus on food quality, variety, and attention to detail. Service is efficient and professional, with main courses served within 20 minutes during regular dinner hours. The staff is attentive, friendly, and accommodating. Having a strong background in Italian cuisine and visiting based on a recommendation, expectations were high—and they were fully met. Highly recommended are the generously portioned seafood starters, as well as the expertly prepared tomahawk or rib-eye steak. For dessert, the lemon ice cream served in a frozen lemon is a standout choice. This restaurant is more than just a dining spot—it could be considered a local attraction. Suitable for couples, families with children, and even pet owners, thanks to a designated pet-friendly area. A must-visit for those in the region.

This restaurant never train or educate their staff for sure. Male Waiter so rude and unfriendly! We booked a table on Sunday night for my Birthday dinner. Waitress (female) she was friendly and warm welcome. Then another waiter (Male) come around asked for drink- we order just a large still water. He give me some ice and I don't want it. No ice please, I said Next time tell me first if you don't want, Waiter said How do I know will you served me ice , you need to asked your customers! I am there for first time! and 2-3 min ago he went back and ask for order but we are not ready yet, so we said give us couple minutes please. Our restaurant closed at 8pm , waiter said We already know that, that is reason why we booked table 6.45pm! Unbelievable! If you are not happy to do your work so go back to sleep! We will never go back to this restaurant again and will not recommend to our friends and family!

Lovely appetizers but service was chaotic with multiple servers, also asking for missing drinks, and the waitress refusing parmesan cheese for pizza, just spent £180 on bills and tight on cheese.. pizza wasn't for me, nice but not for me needed beer well-done, more bread and tomato sauce was missing flavour.. only one draught larger over £6 and pint of coke wasn't a pint but a large glass... We enjoyed it but overall it was not for us... Oh the special cordon blue is very delish, but £22, one off. We also for a large bill got no free shots or comp drinks like other Italians, and .services we go to.

Fabulous stringy cheese that went everywhere! Not too keen on the ham on mine tho

Fantastic wee place, I went in for dinner while on a work trip for a quick dinner and loved the food. Chose the Aztec soup and tacos which were both incredibly tasty with a great spice and deep flavour. Staff were friendly and was perfect for a quick, tasty dinner on my own.
Sam S — Google review
The food was delicious! And the service was wonderful. At first we were reluctant to pay extra for vegan cheese (massive pet hate of ours when you're charged extra for vegan products, or if you have the dairy products removed and they charge you the same), however, the extra £2 for the vegan cheese was well worth it after the owner came and spoke to us and explained that it's homemade with a special recipe. Honestly one of the best vegan cheeses we've had. He could easily make a business making this alone! We had the vegan nachos to share for a starter, then a quesadilla and burrito. Very tasty and I love how they ask your required spice level. The staff were friendly and attentive. The owner was incredibly helpful and I loved his passion for his food. 100% recommend and I can't wait to return!!!
Katherine G — Google review
Visited here today with my mam as we were on a day trip to Hexham, and it was absolutely outstanding. From the moment we walked in the door, the service was welcoming, and we knew that the food was going to be good. We both ordered naked burritos, with my mam ordering the fajita chicken and me getting the beef brisket, and the portion sizes were just right. I also ordered the horchata as I had heard many good things, and rightly so, because it was delicious. Overall, a 5 star experience from start to finish, and somewhere that I would come back to Hexham for just to have the food again.
Milo C — Google review
Outstanding dishes, decor and experience at this brilliant independent restaurant. This wonderful place would be a jewel in the crown of any city in the world; Hexham is incredibly lucky to have it, spicing up its night life and town centre. After a terrifically tasty burrito, I selfishly ordered their Tuesday Taco offer. I simply couldn’t get enough! Thank you and congratulations on your wonderful restaurant.

Great find whilst on holiday. Super friendly staff and brilliant service. Lovely food and drinks and so helpful we tried and tested all their chocolate samples and took some home. So good we have booked a table for tomorrow.
Steve G — Google review
This is one of those places that doesn't look like much from the outside, but as soon as you walk in you would swear you're in Mexico. The smells, music, people, and general vibe are great, and the food is easily the best Mexican food we've had. It tastes so authentic, down to the flavour of the maize flour they use, but is a tiny bit expensive, e.g. £2 for a 30ml(ish) tub of guacamole. The churros are a MUST. Honestly, just trust me and order them, you won't be sorry!
Beth M — Google review
We were only in town for the day so popped in for lunch having seen the award winning notice on the restaurant window. Food was very good and the staff are really enthusiastic about there product, the young lad making up the food was really helpful with advice on what was available, heat levels and even showed us how the nacho/tortilla machine worked as they make them from scratch on site. Wish you were nearer to where we live.

The Blue Bell is a delightful pub that truly embraces the spirit of hospitality, especially for dog owners. During a recent visit to Corbridge, I discovered this charming spot where my furry friend was welcomed with open arms. The staff went above and beyond, offering water and treats for my pup while creating a warm atmosphere that made us feel right at home. With its friendly locals and inviting vibe, The Blue Bell quickly became our go-to place during our stay.

Great dog friendly pub in the center of Corbridge. Large sunny beer garden out back. Great value Sunday lunch, £12.50, which included cauliflower cheese & pigs in blankets perfectly cooked meats. Service was perfect and quick.

Arrived without a booking on a busy Sunday afternoon in Corbridge but this wasn't a problem. All the staff and manger were friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The Sunday carvery was plentiful and tasty at a great price for the offering. Well worth a visit.

Had a Sunday dinner here about a year ago and it was nice. Went this week and the chicken curry and rice was terrible. The chips were also burnt and the only saving grace was that the portion sizes were very small. The atmosphere was also terrible as all that was playing on the TV screens was Who wants to be a millionaire - I think from the 80s with Chris Tarrant!!! Sorry, will not be back.

Collected 2 Sunday Lunch’s as gift for in laws on Father’s Day. Short wait for the order but staff kept me updated. Dinners (pork) were delicious, hot and plentiful (in fact they struggled to eat it all) Really good value too.

Nestled in the heart of Hexham, Danielle's Bistro is a long-standing family-run restaurant that has been a local favorite since 1996. This comfortable eatery offers a blend of Mediterranean and British cuisine, featuring homestyle steak and potato dishes alongside elegant desserts. With its unpretentious and traditional ambiance, Danielle's Bistro provides set menus, lunchtime and early evening specials, as well as an à la carte menu.
My favorite place to eat in Hexham by a landslide, I've been here for my birthday a fair few times and they easily accommodate a group of around ten just by pushing the tables together I usually get the prawn and melon starter. Pork belly main & brandy snap basket dessert off the blackboard. I have also had the lamb & duck mains which are also really nice but I find the duck isn't big enough for my greedy belly 😆 The sticky toffee pudding dessert is also excellent, my partner who hates most sticky toffee puddings enjoys this one because it doesn't taste of dates Also kinda random but the ladies toilet is delightfully luxurious, so much nicer using a flannel to dry hands than paper towels or blowers & the carpet is a bold choice but purples my fave colour so I like that too

We did not booked and arrived 19:00 for a table for two. Lovely meal and staff very pleasant. However, the resteraunt is rather dark inside. Staircase too and from toilet is rather steep.... we felt we were rushed from our table.

Danielle's Bistro - the kind of place you think about telling everyone, but secretly want to keep for yourself. My favourites are firmly established: honey-roasted beetroot with feta to start and cheesecake to finish (because why change perfection?) In between, the sea bass with prawns was a reminder that some kitchens don't just cook, they care. A bistro where routines become rituals and where returning feels less like repetition and more like reward ❤️

This is a lovely find in Hexham. It is an 'old fashioned' bistro serving beautifully cooked and prepared meals. The decor was quaint in a way but perfectly suited the feel of the place. The proprietor was welcoming, his staff friendly and their attention to detail first class. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was melt in the mouth.

Called in here after rhe races on the off chance they had a table and luckily they squeezed us in as we were early. It got really busy so would reccomend booking. Really good value fixed price menus good choice and a good wine selection too.

Danielle's is the perfect place for a cozy, suitably priced, and delicious meal for anyone looking for both filling and delicious portions. The menu offers a wide selection of pub/bistro classics, slightly fancier dishes and some knockout signatures, all for a comfortable price and all executed to near-perfection. You can tell that whoever designed the menu has a real understanding and appreciation for flavour combinations and textures, as well as the kitchen being able to cook them wonderfully. The drinks menu is great, with a good selection of soft and hard beverages that can accompany your meal, ask any of the very helpful, smiley and professional staff for help with drinks or anything really! The (I presume weekly or daily) blackboard dessert specials are brilliant too with dishes such as truly, melt in your mouth sticky toffee pudding or a healthy selection of ice cream and sorbet flavours. The setting and serving was brilliant with a nice wait time before the meal arrived, and a wonderful calming ambient hub-bub of chatter and music. I also noticed that they cater to the younger ones among us too and didn't see any issues with them serving kids as young as 3/4! Currently their coronavirus measures are excellent and appropriate, with face screens, disinfectants and social distancing.
