Viveiro in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Viveiro, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Viveiro is a small coastal town on Spain’s rugged northern coast, known for its scenic ría (estuary), sheltered beaches, and green Galician hills. Its historic center preserves medieval walls, stone archways, and churches such as Santa María do Campo, giving the town an intimate, old-world feel. Visitors come for relaxed seaside promenades, fresh seafood, and local festivals, including one of Spain’s most notable Holy Week processions. Nearby viewpoints and hiking routes along the Cantabrian coast make it a good base for exploring the Rías Altas region.
With favorites like Poza da Ferida, O Asador, and Porta do Valado, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Mesón Imperial and Restaurante Bar A Praza so you can get the best taste of Viveiro while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Gigantic eucalyptus trees, some dating to 1880, give this forest preserve & hiking area its name.
Amazing place with beautiful nature and old eucalyptus trees, I would come back. It’s for free as well and the little hike is great for getting some fresh air in the lounges.
Alex K — Google review
You can’t access anymore the oldest biggest tree. The original pathway following the river is currently closed and lot of trees are marked up (hoping they won’t cut them out). There’s a parallel path in the forest much less scenic. Parking is small and extremely busy. The forest smell was heaven !

A really lovely walk along a mill race, under the shade of huge trees. All very relaxing, and impressive. Take a picnic it's a beautiful place to stay for a while. Not sure on fishing rules but that stream probably has some nice trout in it.
Tom W — Google review
Beautiful eucalyptus trees in a small forest, surrounded by villages. It won't give you that true forrest feeling, but worth a visit. Some beautiful reptiles and insects, like butterflies and dragonflies can be seen.
Paul G — Google review
No problem parking. Easy to follow route on very well maintained paths. Just breathe in the aroma of the eucalyptus and pine. This lovely walk doesn't need a destination, but Galicia's tallest tree "the Grandfather" is a nice bonus. Make sure you carry on upstream to the little hydro power station and weir.

Beautiful green forest. There are no services.
M S — Google review
A hardly visited place that lures you into the sphere of an enchanted forest. It's incredibly beautiful wherever you look. If you don't become quiet here and feel a connection with nature and our earth and life as a whole it will probably never happen. These wonderful majestic trees form a natural architecture -- as a cathedral of trees. I loved it.
HH S — Google review
The tree itself is not that nice but the walk to get there is beautiful.

Excellent tumbling waterfalls, but it also provided private space to enjoy it. You do need to be able to climb up and down very narrow paths to get to some spots though. There is parking at the top, where you leave the main road, but there is also some space down the lane by an abandoned house. Right at the bottom of the lane, where the asphalt ends, there is space for four or five carefully parked cars, but there is limited passing space should you meet something coming in the other direction.

The charming town square in Viveiro, Lugo is a picturesque spot featuring the town hall, several delightful cafes ideal for a lunch or coffee break, local shops, and traditional architecture. From this central hub, one can explore the narrow streets that lead to the older part of town where a mix of dilapidated and refurbished buildings can be found. If you have an appreciation for quaint alleyways and historic houses, this place will surely captivate you.
The lovely town square in Viveiro, Lugo. Here you'll find the town hall, a couple of cafés worthy of stop for lunch or a coffee stop, a few local shops and views of the typical local architecture. From the square, you can follow the small streets up into the older part of the town, find run down old properties next to smarter renovated ones. If you like little old streets and houses, you won't be disappointed.

Restaurante Bar La Plaza is a beloved cafe in Viveiro. They always provide something to accompany their delicious coffee, which has a fantastic flavor. It is a perfect spot to stop and enjoy a cup of coffee when visiting Viveiro. The service at Restaurante Bar La Plaza is excellent, with friendly and fast staff members who cater to your needs. The food was disgusting. Going to the bathroom the kitchen looks dirty. The waiter saw we only took 3 bites from the food and didn’t say anything, it’s almost like he knew their food is rubbish. These people don’t deserve a food handling license and should be only allowed to do what’s in their limited capacity: pouring wine and beers. Not feeding people and charging them money for it.

(Translated by Google) The octopus portion was the best, very tender. The calamari came with too many potatoes; fewer potatoes and more calamari would have been more presentable. The shrimp and octopus pizza was a bit sparse in ingredients; they weren't very kind with the portion. The location is very central, right in the square. The worst thing is that the waiters argue a lot. The best waiter is the youngest guy, very attentive to serving you, picking you up, etc. (Original) La ración de pulpo lo mejor, muy blandito, los calamares vienen con demasiadas patatas, menos patatas y más calamares estaría más presentable. I was going with my daughter and grandson for breakfast, and he brought us coffee with milk and churros, but he forgot my two-year-old grandson's glass of milk. It was taking too long, so my daughter went in to get it. Politely, when she saw the tray on the counter, she asked him if the glass of milk was ours and if she could take it, to which he responded very rudely that it would unsettle the tray. He said he would take it out, but he waited until the tray was full to take it out, so we had to drink cold coffee and the child cried for his milk. The next day, it was more of the same. O Asador is a charming restaurant located in Viveiro's old town, specializing in chargrilled steaks, roast lamb, Iberico pork, and local fish like hake, turbot, and monkfish. The menu features highlights such as cocido de cerdo celta and lechal a la brasa. Known for its intimate and friendly atmosphere, it's the perfect place for a special night out.

Great food with very friendly people. Lunch for two with shared salad with ventresca de bonito and then pulpo. Excellent quality.

Really lovely restaurant every time I've visited. I haven't found anything better in Viveiro, the fish soup was an excellent starter. The service was just right.

Be careful if you bring kids. He cooked up four huge steaks which no 10 year olds would ever finish. I rarely come across a restaurant owner knowingly misleading his guests. My dish was hearty and tasty but definitely wont be going back. Also would only sell us 1/2l bottles of water and wouldn't sell us 1l bottles of although I could clearly see them in the fridge.

Had a great steak here. Nice music and decor too

The food was not bad: I enjoyed my octopus (pulpo), but the service was extremely slow: we were waiting for our order to be taken for about 20 minutes and then we were waiting for our bill for 25 minutes. Also they don't speak any English, however to be fair, most of the people in the region don't.
