Vernasca in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Vernasca, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Vernasca is a quiet hilltop village in the Piacenza Apennines, known for its stone houses, Romanesque church remains, and wide views over the Val d’Arda. Its territory includes Vigoleno, a remarkably preserved medieval fortified hamlet recognized among Italy’s most beautiful villages. The area offers access to countryside walking routes, local food-and-wine traditions of Emilia-Romagna, and small cultural events such as the Vernasca Silver Flag historic car hill climb.
With favorites like Pizzeria Griglieria Aldopolavoro, Taverna Al Castello, and Azienda Agricola Il Casello, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Castello di Vigoleno and Pizzeria Griglieria Aldopolavoro so you can get the best taste of Vernasca while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Beautiful little Medieval castle with outstanding views on the surrounding valleys... not to mention that you can get a flavorful lunch right inside the castle itself.
Gio C — Google review
Vigoleno rises in the heart of the Piacenza countryside, where the deep blue sky mingles with lush forests and endless vineyards, dotted here and there with rustic stone houses. The winding road leads you gently uphill until, at the last turn, you must leave your car behind and continue on foot. Step by step, the castle slowly reveals itself, like a vision drawn out of time. From the outside, its medieval walls already inspire awe, but once you pass within, the sight becomes truly enchanting. Through narrow openings in the fortress walls, the mountains unfold before your eyes like a painted canvas. Standing there, you feel the calm of the village below and the generosity of nature all around. As you descend towards the village, you see how people live surrounded by such beauty—an experience that urges you to pause, reflect, and perhaps reimagine your own life.

What an experience to stay in a castle. We were treated like royalty. The food was amazing. A must experience for everyone.

Very nice, well maintained, little castle and borghetto on the top of a hill. Most of its open for browsing. Its about 4€ to climb the tower, see a couple displays on a couple floors and walk a little portion of the wall for some great views of the surrounding valleys and countryside. Large open courtyard in front of the walls entrance, water closet is available right by the entrance as well. There's a winery (i think) tucked in at the base of the walls as well. Restaurant across the street from the entrance as well that looked popular, but we didnt fo in. The store inside the walls had some really tasty sausage! There's a few smaller parking areas off the side of the road on the way up that are free and within a minute or 2 walk up to the walls.

We wanted to go see this place because it was part of the Borghi più belli d'Italia, but we didn't stay for very long. It was mid day and hot but the worst part was the mosquitos. I felt like I was getting eaten left and right. My children left with so many bites. Not sure why there is such a problem here when we didn't experience this in other borghi. Anyhow, it wasn't a pleasant visit. I did give it 3 star though because without the mosquitos it was a beautiful place. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Museo Gli Orsanti is a stunning and distinctive museum that vividly illustrates the world of street artists, specifically jugglers and animal trainers. It provides a clear depiction of their origins and development, showcasing how they evolved alongside the economic and social context of their time. This fascinating museum beautifully captures the essence of these professions, highlighting their connection to the historical backdrop in an engaging manner.

Winery
The enchanting journey of Marino Barani & Figli began in the 1950s when Marino and Gina Barani acquired land near the historic Vigoleno Castle. Initially a nursery focused on cultivating native vine cuttings, their passion for winemaking blossomed as they recognized the land's exceptional potential. Today, under the stewardship of Stefano Barani, Marino's grandson, this family-run winery continues to honor its rich heritage.
This winery is a real treasure! The host was incredibly warm and welcoming, setting the perfect tone for our visit. After a quick climb to the top of the vineyard, we sat down for a tasting with a view that felt like something out of a postcard – vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see on one side, a castle on the other. The wines were so good we couldn’t resist leaving with three bottles. The food was just as great – hot torta fritta, a salami board, and pies for dessert. A fantastic experience all around!

The Santa Maria, passito on the plant, the still white with truly special hints of flowers and rosemary. Stop, taste and take home very good wine and a story of love for your land that makes you meditate.

(Translated by Google) We had the pleasure of participating in a tasting at the Marino Barani & Figli winery in Vigoleno. The company is located a couple of kilometers from the village and parking is very simple thanks to the presence of a small car park along the road. We were welcomed by one of the owners, who made us sit in their small shop, simple but welcoming and well looked after. After a short wait, we were accompanied to the tasting station, walking through various rows of vines and climbing a small hill. Here there is a tasting station with umbrella, a small table and stools. We were immediately served the first wine, followed by a generous basket of fried pie and an extraordinary tray of mixed local cured meats. The fried pie was really excellent, with a thin and well cooked dough, without excess oil. The cured meats were fresh and traditional from the area. We tasted a total of four types of wine, among which the organic Ortrugo refermented in the bottle and an extraordinary still white Monterosso DOC stand out. At the end of the tasting we were also served two tarts to finish the snack. The price of the tasting was €20 each, which I consider a more than good price for the offer received. If you are passing through the area, I highly recommend you stop at this farm, which makes the most of the gastronomic qualities of the area.

Azienda Agricola Il Casello is a winery that offers an excellent selection of local wines. Despite a small language barrier, the staff went out of their way to provide a great tour and allow visitors to sample their delicious wines. The winery is known for its fabulous Bonarda, which offers great value for money. Located in a lovely setting, Azienda Agricola Il Casello is definitely worth a visit for wine enthusiasts looking to explore the flavors of Italy.
We stopped very late on Sunday afternoon just as they were closing but they very kindly opened up the winery and gave us a very good tour about the different wines that are produced locally and allowed us to try some of the wines they make. We tried a selection of 4 wines and all were absolutely delicious, we bought a selection of wines to take home and enjoy back in England. There was a small language barrier but that is mostly down to us for not speaking Italian. Thank you Franco and your son in particular (we think Marco - sorry if this is incorrect!) for doing the tour. Lovely place to visit, well worth it! Tom & Laura (Oxford, UK)

The others to meet once again and enjoy the exquisite hospitality of Luigina and Franco. More than a cellar, a circle of sincere and friendly friends with an added value that is almost impossible to find today. The wine they produce according to traditional methods is a very high quality product. Those who love full-bodied and structured reds, taste their Gutturnio Superiore, or the Gutturnio Riserva, and derive full satisfaction from it. I challenge even the most trained winemaker to distinguish these surprising and austere wines from Piacenza from the great reds of Langhe and Monferrato. For me they are equal! Castello di Vigoleno is a medieval castle that has been transformed into a hotel, offering elegant rooms and suites, as well as a refined restaurant and event space. Originally built in the tenth century as a fortified village, it was later restored and turned into a residence for social gatherings by Princess Ruspoli Gramont. The castle features museum rooms displaying historical and photographic documents. The surrounding town is described as one of the most beautiful places to visit, with charming streets and rich history.
I visited Castello di Vigoleno last November, and it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. This enchanting castle is truly a magical place that transports you to another era. The breathtaking architecture, surrounded by picturesque countryside views, makes you feel like royalty—like a princess in a storybook. The atmosphere was serene and absolutely captivating. Every corner of the castle and its surroundings is steeped in history, and walking through it felt like an unforgettable journey into the past. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in the beauty of history and nature. Although the little restaurant inside wasn’t open during my visit, the hosts were incredibly kind and welcoming. They treated us to a delightful spread of local specialties—prosciutto, Parmesan cheese, fresh bread, and a glass of exquisite wine. This simple yet elegant offering felt like a royal feast, and the warmth of their hospitality made the experience even more special. It’s hard to put into words how emotional and unique this moment was—it’s something I’ll treasure forever. Castello di Vigoleno is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the area. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a lover of stunning landscapes, or someone looking for a peaceful escape, this castle will capture your heart. I highly recommend taking the time to explore this hidden gem—you won’t regret it!

One of the most beautiful little town to visit, rich in history & heritage place. It little streets are very charming. There is big car park at the bottom of the Borgo then a few steps on you find yourself submerged in this beautiful place. We went in a day out and had our picnic of panino and sat on the small peaceful corner with a view to have lunch, it truly was nice and relaxing.

The castle is well preserved it is a romantic place where to spend time with your partner , all around is surrounded by nature , the host it is one of the best I have ever met

What could be more romantic than staying in an 11th century castle. The rooms are completely modernized. Continental breakfast is included. A memory to be cherished.

The castle village was extremely interesting to walk through and explore. The room that you stayed in wasn’t in a castle per-say, it’s in a building inside the castle village within the walls. The hosts were unfriendly when we arrived, my wife and I felt as though we were interrupting their smoke break to try and check in. The breakfast was very minimal and the worst breakfast we had in all of Europe. The coffee was made in a single serve Keurig machine.

Mediaval castle is very well preserved. You can enjoy a great view of the castle and the hill from the top of the tower. The small beautiful village bring you back to the middle age.
Sofia V — Google review
Perfect room, nice views, but too simple breakfast, not so much to see from the castle and the hosts can be more polite.

A little town on top of a hill with splendid view and beautiful places, such as churches, restaurants and little houses. The view and the place itself is quite inviting, with fair prices and good atmosphere.

Nestled in the charming town of Vernasca, Pizzeria Griglieria Aldopolavoro is a delightful culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. From the moment you make a reservation over the phone with their friendly staff, you know you're in for something special. The warm welcome and attention to detail create a wonderful atmosphere that sets the stage for an exceptional meal. The highlight here is undoubtedly their pizzas, particularly praised for their unique dough available from Wednesday to Friday.

It's hidden away in Vernasca. It's a great place. The pizzas are really good, especially the dough. One of the best I've eaten. I also had there special burger. I'm difficult with my burgers. This one was delicious. The buns were made with the same dough as the pizzas. Truly delicious. Hard to eat but delicious. Prices are reasonable.

(Translated by Google) A charming place. I came here to eat because I had read good reviews and I can only confirm that everything was excellent! We started off very well when I booked by phone and a really kind lady answered me. When we arrived they welcomed us with a smile in a place with attention to small details. Wonderful atmosphere and I am happy to say that the dishes were also really good. I recommend trying their special dough available from Wednesday to Friday. We ate pizza and it is one of the best in the province!! The desserts of their production are truly exquisite (special tiramisu). We will definitely return and next time we will try a meat dish. We also appreciated the background music which was not at all invasive. (Original) Un posto incantevole.

Nestled in the heart of Piacenza, Ristorante Da Rino offers a delightful journey back to the 1970s with its charming decor and warm ambiance. This family-run trattoria is a treasure trove of authentic local cuisine, serving up generous portions of traditional dishes that will leave your taste buds dancing. The star attractions include their superb tripe with beans and an impressive platter of cured meats paired perfectly with hot fried cake.
Fantastic food bat a very reasonable price

We called in yesterday while waiting for la cantina İl Casello to open. We only wanted a snack so opted for pasta fritta, salumi e formaggio. No complaints at all. The host was helpful and friendly. Can't comment on the full menu but what we had was very enjoyable.

(Translated by Google) Family-run restaurant "like it used to be", the authenticity of the food is truly exciting. Platter of cured meats and excellent fried pie, delicious anolini in broth, a visit is really recommended if you are in these parts 💯 (Original) Ristorante a gestione familiare "come una volta" davvero emozionante la genuinità del cibo. (Translated by Google) Enchanting place, facing the hills, terrace with hanging flowers, exquisite food, all the pasta is homemade, non-greasy and soft fried cake, sublime cured meats, delicious pisarei! 'Casual' environment, the opposite of cool, very kind staff! Not only will we return but we will become loyal customers! Perfect quality/price ratio!

(Translated by Google) Genuine food, excellent cured meats, view of the cultivated hills. A restaurant where we came the first time with the Fork but where we have returned other times and will return again. The cured meats appetizer is really good and plentiful, accompanied then by the hot fried cake would be almost enough. A first or second course however can help to satiate and return home satisfied. Congratulations! (Original) Cibo genuino, salumi eccellenti, vista sulle colline coltivate. Complimenti!

(Translated by Google) A trattoria with 1970s-style decor, but excellent traditional Piacenza dishes. The tripe with beans is superb, and the cured meats with chisolini are excellent. Well-prepared first courses with generous portions. The dessert menu offers three options... and your taste buds will thank you! The owners are welcoming and always available to satisfy their guests' requests.

(Translated by Google) I went yesterday for lunch with my family, but unfortunately, a lot has changed and the prices have gone up too much. The place is in disrepair, the paint on the ceiling is peeling, and the light cords are exposed, revealing mammoths. We ordered three portions of cured meat, which were poor, something that wasn't the case until eight months ago. We had a portion of pisarei e Faso, and two portions of tortellini with potatoes. They arrived with five tortellini counted on the plate, topped with only a little melted butter and two mushrooms. We had three desserts, three scoops of vanilla ice cream with a little black cherry syrup on top and three blueberries. Two bottles of water and a very normal bottle of Ortrugo. We paid 98 euros. Absurd. We will never return.

Taverna Al Castello offers a delightful culinary journey steeped in history, having welcomed guests for over five generations. Nestled in a charming medieval village just outside Piacenza, this tavern exudes an inviting ambiance reminiscent of days gone by. Diners can savor exquisite local flavors while enjoying the stunning views of the fondo valley.
Exquisite spot with a simple but delicious menu in a breathtaking setting overlooking the fondo valley. The Pisarie e faso was exceptional! Wonderful deserts and local wine. Kind staff. Highly recommended!

Very plain food, only few dishes available, the wine options that let you down poor service.

58 euros for a mezzo litro of wine and a plate of salame and cheese. Never paid so much ANYWHERE in Italy Yes the cheese and charcuterie was good but it is theft. We were not aware of the price before they gave us the bill. We arrived when the kitchen was closed but they said they could offer a plate of mixed cheese and meat. We were clearly not expecting to pay so much and would have never agreed on this. Maybe it's our fault because we didn't ask before for the price We tried to play cards like we do in all the places we go but the owner told us we couldn't play 🤷🏻‍♂️ Overall a disappointing experience

Simple but exquisite local flavours in a relaxed environment. The Pisarei e faso, tortellini with sage and gutturnio wine were memorable experiences.

An amazing experience in a place with a lifespan of more than 5 generations. An ambiance as an old tavern, great wine and food in the heart of a medieval village in the hills just outside of Piacenza. I reccomend the wine in the traditional "scodelle", small porcelain bowls in the place of traditional wine glasses.
