Distillery
Food & Drink
Situated on the southern edge of Islay, overlooking a picturesque bay with a forest backdrop, Laphroaig Distillery is renowned for producing one of the most famous single malts in the world. The distillery offers a range of guided tours, from brief overviews to extensive four-and-a-half-hour excursions that provide insight into both the distilling process and the surrounding landscape.
One of the more famous islay distillerys with a very distinct taste. Their entire collection has a red thread that is very recognizable be that their younger expressed or older. Location is set direct at the shoreline with a nice small Cafe with a good selection of house intern whiskies.
David M — Google review
Enjoyed its grain to glass experience, a tour that demonstrates how whisky is made and ends with 3 samples direct from barrels. Laphroaig, not only a great producer, but still one who does malting onsite. So get to see and understand the tradition way of turning grain into whisky. Ace our guide is energetic, witty, and friendly, making the tour fun, insightful and memorable. Laphroaig offer driver takeaway bottles, making sure a safe experience for all.
Beatrice W — Google review
We did a tasting experience which was good. I feel like our host knew the script and information but I am not sure she was really steeped in scotch as well as others. She was very young, which probably explains that. Still, very friendly and responsive to questions. Laphroaig has some passionate followers so the fact that there are more knowledgeable visitors than hosts doesn't totally surprise me. The visitor's center/gift shop is nice. I wish the tasting room in the back had been larger. There were several bottles I would have tried if I felt invited to stay and try more. The staff there explained anything and let you try what you want but didn't really engage in conversation and offer bottles you didn't already know or ask about. Maybe some people prefer that. I would have preferred recommendations. Beautiful location. Right on a little bay on the east side. A very pleasant e-bike ride from Port Ellen.

Unforgettable Uisage Tour – 10/10! This tour was everything we hoped for and more: phenomenal whiskies, hilarious and fascinating stories, a scenic walk to the Kilbride stream, and a tasty lunch to top it all off. Our guide was an absolute gem—funny, attentive, and totally in sync with the unpredictable Islay weather. The 4½ hours flew by, and every minute was worth it. Whether you're a whisky nerd or just curious, this experience is pure gold. We’ll definitely be back!
Sebastian P — Google review
We did the Laphroaig Distillery Past and Present Tasting, and it was well worth it. The lineup was impressive, with the Chapter 5 34-year-old as the clear highlight, alongside several other excellent drams. The blind tasting format made it even more fun and engaging, adding to the overall experience. A must-do for any Laphroaig fan.
Alexander K — Google review
Absolutely stunning location, operation, and staff. My wife and I did the hiking tour and our guide, Richard, did a phenomenal job. Not only was he a wealth of knowledge on whisky and very personable, but as an Islay local he knew a remarkable amount of detail on the island's flora and fauna. My wife is not even a whisky fan and he was able to find an expression that she liked! The shop is beautiful with a good tasting room, and the museum is a very nice touch and presents information well and really endears you to the distillery. I will admit that Laphroig was not my #1 favorite Scotch before the tour but after seeing how its run, meeting the awesome people that work there, and trying a broad selection of whisky- I will always check for Laphroaig bottles first when I hit the whisky aisle!
Ethan — Google review
A big fan of Laphroaig, the tour was unique because they really go into the history of the ownership and how it changed hands so many times, that was interesting. They also have a tour you can pair with a 2 mile hike for the more adventurous. The only reason I’m giving this tour 4 stars instead of 5 is they are the only distillery that uses measuring tops and dram clips to make sure you get your three samples and no more. This is simply not in the spirit of Islay, and felt more like I was at a London pub.
Natty S — Google review
We had a flying visit just to see the shop and have a dram. Laphroaig has long been one of our favourites. The bar did not disappoint. Lovely to be greated with a complimentary dram and then have a multitude of further whisky choices of which was an expensive range. We can highly recommend the 10 sherry cask. Lovely stuff.

Dunyvaig Castle, situated on the shores of Lagavulin Bay in Islay, is a centuries-old ruin with a rich history. Built on an Iron Age fort, it was once a naval base for the Lords of the Isles and was occupied by various clans through numerous sieges. Despite its current state of decay, the castle still exudes a sense of power and history.
The castle was once a naval base of the Lord of the Isles, chiefs of Clan Donald. You will see the ruins of the sixteenth-century castle, although the site includes a thirteenth-century courtyard, and a fifteenth-century keep. Climb at your own risk: there's no guardrails.
Vadim S — Google review
Mind the gap! Worth the walk before your Lagavulin tour. We went after the tour (and extra samplings) and the descent out of the ruins was a bit uncomfortable on less stable legs. There's a gap to step over with a long-ish drop to the rocks and the sea. Not 5 stars because it's not really anything more than the photos show ... remnants of an old fort. Great place for photos back to the distillery even if you don't make the climb.
Roger O — Google review
Nice ruins, not a lot to do, but just gazing at it and walking inside is nice! Try not to plunge on the rocks, though! There's a little tricky part when going up there.
Roberto A — Google review
Easy to get to while seeing the distilleries. It's cool to be able to walk around and explore it
Cole H — Google review
Went here for the views, a bit of a climb and the picture of Lagavulin. It was super picturesque and ticked a lot of boxes for the evening! A very easy and quick stop to take in the beauty and history of Islay. Worth a detour!
Lisa B — Google review
OMG, this place is gorgeous! Our group went to Lagavulin distillery while we decided to walk to these ruins instead! What a treat! The views are absolutely stunning, and it is a phenomenally beautiful ruin, almost as if all its history intended it to be this thoughtful place to stop and appreciate it all. The colors of the moss around the castle are so magical. You could spend just a little time here, or just relax and wander for a bit longer. We climbed up the ruins. I didn't see any signage to give more information, so encourage you to look it up before or after your visit. It's free to visit. Totally worth it!
Anonymous A — Google review
A charming old rustic castle! It’s a short walk getting here, and you may have to not have a fear of heights to actually get to the castle ruins themselves as there are some sharp drop offs right next to the path. Provides an excellent view of the Lagavulin distillery! Definitely worth visiting if you like old castle ruins, smelling the fresh ocean air, and living a little dangerously. :D
Matthew T — Google review
There is not too much left of the castle, but it's a short walk from the distillery car park and the views across the bay and over to Kintyre are beautiful .

Islay Wines is a rare gem on the Whisky Coast, offering a delightful alternative to the abundance of single malt whisky in Islay. Located in Port Ellen, this winery boasts an impressive selection of wines, ranging from sweet whites to deep reds. Visitors can expect a wonderful atmosphere and an enjoyable evening at Islay Wines. Guests have raved about their experiences, from meeting the owner and enjoying her stories to touring the gardens and tasting exceptional wines.
This is a wonderful experience not to be missed if you’d like to experience homemade wines, created with love by Helen from her traditional family’s recipes. A very heart-filled Islay experience of genuine welcome and charming hospitality in a cosy cabin, just a few minutes from the ferry in Port Ellen
Lorna — Google review
One of the highlights of Islay Helen is hilarious and the whole experience was fantastic. Along with her husband Kenneth (who apparently works harder than her...) they have been producing fruit wines in an upstairs bedroom for over 5 years. Next to the house is a wee marquee where you are invited to try the wines. A 'try' basically means a full glass of every single flavour coupled with exceptional banter. Loved it. The Barley wine is totally unique and would be my recommendation, they do smaller bottles too which are brilliant gifts to take home for friends etc.
L E — Google review
My wife and I stumbled upon this hidden gem of Islay while waiting to take the ferry back from Islay. Prior to this trip, we had not known about Islay wines, but we are beyond happy that we found this spot. The owner was welcoming and excited to share her passion with us at her beautiful property. It was such a fun environment as I willingly got to play with her pups while tasting some unique wine that she personally makes 100% herself. This was such a fun experience, and we left with a bottle of wine that we had no clue we'd find on the island. This is a must go and deserves far more attention - do yourself a favor and swing up for some tasty wine, a good laugh, and a memorable experience. Even the deer on the mainland approve!
Eric — Google review
We came by Helen's winery during out sailing trip. The way she talked about her 100% home-made wines is incredible. Passion and hapinnes just glows from her. It's really wonderful place and even better than destilerry viewing trip because it's very honest. Plus the wines are great! 180 degrees different from what you can buy in shop. I strongly recommend for everyone while visiting Isla
P W — Google review
Lovely host and delicious wine! Helen was a great support when we stranded on Islay. Definitely worth a visit and a couple of glasses!
Meike A — Google review
Stopped here after a bunch of distilleries and it was certainly the highlight of my day! Was greeted at the front by a bunch of wonderful spaniels, tasted 4 wonderful wines and left with wine to take home. I was expecting very sweet wine by the looks of them but was pleasantly surprised with how dry and earthy they were! I have not quite tasted anything similar, especially the barley wine. Definitely stop here if you are on Islay!
Lisa G — Google review
What a delightful experience! Helen was so warm and welcoming, as were her four generations of spaniels. Thank you, Helen, for a true personal look into Scottish life. And for making superior wines! Can’t wait to share them with friends at home in the states!
June J — Google review
Helen was lovely and welcoming. She gave me and my partner tastings of all the wines. They were amazing, not overly sweet like a lot of fruit wines. Full flavoured but dry and she had great paring ideas. Would highly recommend! A gem just like the rest of Islay!

Jim provided excellent customer service and offered high-quality bicycles at a reasonable price. The bikes were perfect for traveling between the distilleries in Port Ellen, including Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg. Renting the bikes allowed for efficient transportation and ensured that appointments were met on time. Islay Cycles also provided essential accessories such as bike locks and bags, making it convenient for visitors to purchase bottles after their distillery visits.
Biking is the best way to travel between the distilleries. We were able to reach our visit appointments on time. We were offered all essentials like bike lock (you don't need it here tho) or bike bag: really handy if you want to purchase some bottles after your visits :) Highly recommend!

By far the best way to experience the Three Distilleries Pathway - get some commuter bikes from a very friendly Jim and enjoy a really fun day out. You'll get all you need at a very reasonable price.
Bernhard T — Google review
Jim fitted my friend and I with nice bikes and had ya on our way in no time. Friendly and a very fair price for a full day rental. Bikes were a great choice to go from Port Ellen out to Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg distilleries. We made it back to Laphroaig just before they closed the tasting room for the day. Never would have covered the ground we did had we not rented the bikes. Top notch.
Dan C — Google review
Every review talks about how amazing Jim is, and they are all correct. He was friendly and helpful, even gave us a "rainy day" discount, which probably happens frequently in the fall! It was very easy to ride our bikes to distilleries, and we could have gone to some amazing hiking spots of we had the time. Will definitely rent again if we make it back to the island.
Kyle M — Google review
Just fantastic. We arrived on Islay with only 45 minutes to get to Lagavulin for a tour. So after dropping our luggage at our room, we rushed to Islay Cycles and lo and behold Jim was ready to get us on our way! He quickly measured us, offered a few options, made sure we were comfortable, provided a pannier ("just in case you want to do a bit of shopping!" he said with a wink), and sent us on our way. The bikes were in great condition and we made our tour with time to spare. I was blown away by the hospitality of everyone on Islay, but Jim certainly stands out. Don't drive on Islay. Bike. And get bikes from Jim.
Caleb S — Google review
Great place. Got a lovely bike, also hired a trailer for kids which was seemed brand new and was fantastic quality. There’s a nice off road cycle track from near the bike hire to 3 distilleries. Was given loads of extras (pannier, inner tubes, tools etc to make things safe). On the day I was due to return the bike the weather forecast was awful. I spoke to Jim and he was lovely - said better to be safe and it was no problem to return the bike the next day. Would definitely recommend and go back.

This is the 3rd time in four years my pal and I have hired Jim's Raleigh Tourers to cycle for a few days around Islay. Great value in terms of prices, and the bikes are fantastic, well maintained and comfortable. We will certainly use Jim's Raleigh Tourers again
Duncan A — Google review
Jim kindly set my partner and I up on a couple of well maintained and suitable bikes for us both. He also loaned us some gloves and a map, pointed us in the right direction to explore quieter parts of Islay which was fantastic. Would highly recommend, friendly and generous!

SeaSalt Bistro & Takeaway, located in Port Ellen, is a popular dining spot offering diverse lunch and dinner menus as well as a takeaway service. The restaurant prides itself on its contemporary cuisine, featuring freshly made pizza, pasta dishes, seafood, steaks, and daily specials using locally sourced ingredients such as Islay-landed lobster, langoustines, scallops, and Argyll beef.
We stayed in Lagavulin Bay just a few minutes down the road from this sweet spot. There were no other diners in the restaurant while we dined but frequent take-aways. Our server was so sweet and fun to chat with, which made the experience that much nicer. Good scotch selection and the seafood was super fresh. Cranachan was the ultimate little treat to finish out the plentiful meal as well!

Lovely restaurant in Port Ellen that offers a variety of delicious food - including several seafood specials. The service was amazing - the staff simply cannot do enough for you - and the food arrived in a timely manner. Very impressed with this one. 🦑🦀🦞🦐

Excellent service. I got a bit nervous when 7 parties were seated at the same time. Was this dinner gonna be some nightmare episode of The Bear?? Nah, the server definitely knew what he was doing and had his system in place. Front and back of house were in sync. Food came out in a timely manner. Very friendly server who used to live in Malaysia. Oysters were solid. Scallops really stood out to me for taste and how they used all parts of the scallop. I got the mussels. Portions justified the price! Dessert, Cranachan, was heavenly.

Food & Drink
Located at the southern tip of Islay, Ardbeg Distillery offers guided tours with tasting sessions and water source walks. The Old Kiln Cafe on-site serves generous portions of reasonably priced food. The distillery provides the most generous whisky samples on the island and offers discounts on gifts purchased after the tour. The remote location offers stunning coastal walks and elevated views from Ardmore Point.
Of all the distilleries on Islay, this one is my favorite. A fan of the 10 for many years I was so excited to take the tour and experience the culture in real life. Nestled so beautifully on the water, the tour is laid back and informative, with real big pours, and the only tour that let us try the new spirit (tastes like schnapps). The tasting room and store are so funky and we enjoyed lunch in the restaurant, had the famous fish chowder, and it didn’t disappoint. Could have spent hours here!
Natty S — Google review
I came here fresh from an early morning visit to Kidalton so whisky tasting wasn't really on my radar but rather to see if either the food truck or the visitor's centre were open. I had to wait a while for the centre to open in order to grab a coffee and I have to salute the extremely friendly staff of the centre who even gave me a free "driver's dram" for later consumption. The Distillery itself is delightfully quirky and worth the visit (including for the whisky).
Bernard S — Google review
The distillery is very easy to reach and has a well set out courtyard. The gift shop/visitor experience is lovely too. We booked the Weekend Whisky Wander with Emma. This was a thoroughly enjoyable gentle walk. Emma had time to talk about Ardbeg and island life. We had a pack lunch in the sun on the small hill. Can't think of anything more perfect. We also sampled several generous expensive drams on the way round. Best of our 3 tours all down to Emma

Stopped in for lunch...and what a lunch it was. (1) The food was amazing. Smoked haddock chowder and scallops entree. The absolute best lunch I have ever eaten. The soup was decadent with large fish pieces. The scallops were seared perfectly and the sauce has a very small amount of yellow mustard taste. I was stunned. Yellow mustard! But it was shockingly perfect. (2) The gift shop is nice and combines with the tasting area. The welcome dram turned into a few "just a taste" pours. The variety of expressions here is almost overwhelming. I highly recommend talking with the staff about your preferences and letting them make recommendations. Our hostess was very knowledgeable, even about past releases and how their expressions compared to other Islay distilleries. Had we simply ordered a flight and sat down we would have truly missed out. (3) Size and setting. This place looks like they are ready to host a very large party outside. A food truck and plenty of patio tables. I wish I could be here when that area fills up.
Joshua W — Google review
Established in 1815. The name means "The Small Promontory". Fun fact: in July 2022, the distillery sold a 1975 cask to a private collector for £16 million, beating Macallan's record for the highest cask selling price. I recommend a tour with a tasting. If you're lucky they will show you custom made Ardbeg tractor and a chopper.

The most UNPLEASANT experience in Islay!!! My friends and I were visiting all the single malt distilleries on Islay, because we are whisky fans and collectors. The past October 6, 2025 at 16:00 hours we visit ARDBEG distillery. The place is nice, well maintained, a lot of parking spaces and the merchandise interesting and from excellent quality. Let's not talk about the whisky that is liked by us and millions of people. The place had many visitors, in a bit chaotic movement but well... That's how it supposed to be... BUT THE ATTENTION OF THE PERSONAL WAST THE WORST WE HAD IN ALL ISLAY!! Terrible mood, no manners, disrespectful, diminishing, hostile attitude, no information, no tasting drams, they really make our visit TOTALLY UNPLEASANT. Before that attitude of the personal I did not buy NOTHING and we left from the place immediately. I don't pretend to be back in there to be mistreated again. If you take the risk and visit the place RUN AWAY FROM THE EMPLOYEE NAMED 👉🏻 MATTHEW👈🏻 not a nice person...

We had a fantastic experience going out kayaking with Dave, he was knowledgeable, friendly and pitched the morning to our level of experience really well!

Nestled in the charming town of Port Ellen, Port Ellen Marina offers a serene escape for those seeking a peaceful waterfront experience. As you stroll along the marina, you'll be captivated by the sight of fishing boats bobbing gently on the water, all framed by stunning coastal views. Great facilities at the Port Ellen Harbor Association building just across the street and up the road a 100 meters

Spend three days here, marina facilities are good, despite there is only one toilet and a lot of people not on a boat in the marina are using this facilities also its often crowded
Leon D — Google review
Arrived last Monday on the Kintyre Express, had to dock at pontoon which had timber decking covered in green slime. Deck hand almost fell into the water, serious H&S risk. Hope you can replace with suitable non slip surface.
James H — Google review
Easily accessible from sea and very sheltered. No facilities in marina but right next to town with hotel, shops and pubs. Short distance to three excellent distilleries; Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg.

New fantastic facilities. New showers and toilets in a converted terrace house, 1 minute walk from the marina. brand new in 2018. unequaled in cleanliness and quality fittings. just brilliant

The Kildalton Cross is a monolithic high cross located in the churchyard of the former parish church of Kildalton. Dating back to the early 8th century AD, it is considered one of the finest surviving Celtic crosses in Scotland and a remarkable monument from that era in Western Europe.
This evidently sacred space was the unexpected highlight of my trip to Islay. I have never seen anything so old in such good condition outside of a museum and subjected to the elements. Bring a token of your faith to leave behind when you go.
Jesse E — Google review
This is an incredibly well preserved example of an early medieval Celtic cross dating from the 8th C. Situated in the now ruined Church of the Foster Son in Kidalton not too far from the Ardbeg Distillery along a single track road. There are also a couple of later medieval warrior's tombs in the churchyard. When I visited early morning it was just the midges and me and it was a peaceful if slightly wet experience
Bernard S — Google review
Tranquil site with amazing history to just soak in when you are there. Drive from port ellen also quite scenic do well worth the trip
Gordon F — Google review
Stopped in to see the Kildalton Chapel and Kildalton Cross. The high cross was carved in the 700's and erected in Kildalton around 1200 years ago. "A sculptural masterpiece and one of the finest carved stones of medieval Scotland." Beautiful views from the cemetery surrounding the chapel.
Lynn P — Google review
A monolithic high cross from the churchyard of the former parish "Church of the Foster Son" (i.e. St John the Evangelist.) Created probably in the second half of the 8th century AD and considered the finest surviving Celtic cross in Scotland. Our stop there was a part of a tour: our awesome guide played on a bagpipe which added to the ambience of the place.
Vadim S — Google review
At the end of the road past the Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Lagavulin distilleries is the old Kildalton Chapel and the Kildalton Cross, a fine example of 8th century stone carving. Aside from the celtic cross itself, the ruins of the old church has some interesting aspects. One is steps in the stone wall so that riders could mount their horses. Another are the markings on the graves. One has a picture of a musket showing that the person buried there was a musketeer (as in wielded a musket, not a French swordsman)... Or is that a really strange handled axe or scythe?
Graham T — Google review
I absolutely loved these ruins. The energy here was tremendous and beautiful. You felt the peace and tranquility in the sanctuary. The grounds and paths around are also so lovely to be around. I would definitely recommend going here and connecting with this sacred place.

Lovely peaceful setting with an important historical cross. As Americans it's impactful to see these ancient spaces. We drove up after visiting a couple distilleries outside Port Ellen. Free. Secluded. Beautiful vistas. Worth the trip.

we had the open crab sandwich and it was delicious, very cosy bar area which is dog friendly. our kids enjoyed their meals as well. many thanks

My review is only for the restaurant. I did not stay that the Islay Hotel. The food was fantastic! We tried the trout, halibut, burger, and various side dishes. Our favorite choice was the Smoked Haddock Soup! You have to try it! We also had local beer on tap, which was perfect with the food. The staff was good, but sometimes, it took a bit longer than it should have to receive the bill. Don't let that stop you from visiting the Islay Hotel restaurant!

We dined in the restaurant for lunch with a large group of 10 including small children. We were able to walk in without a reservation and we seated straight away. Restaurant staff were super friendly and patient with kids. Menu was creative and had options for dietary requirements/allergies including gluten free and dairy free. Portions were large and food high quality and delicious. Cosy atmosphere. Plenty of free street parking. Dog friendly. Definitely recommend.

We can not recommend this hotel highly enough. The staff, led by Nigel, make it an incredibly special place. Andy, the chef, is superb and we were pleased to eat there most nights! Nothing was too much trouble, including adding sticky toffee pudding to the dessert menu on request (it was outstanding!) Our room was beautiful and the extra touches, such as the fresh coffee and cafetiere in the room, were much appreciated. Thank you to the whole team for making our holiday extra special.

We stayed here 7 months ago & had a fantastic experience. The rooms were so comfortable and perfect for our needs with an 11 month old. The location was perfect for walking to many places. The restaurant for breakfast every morning was amazing & so delicious, as was our dinner there one evening. The bar was so nice & we enjoyed listening to the music one evening with the locals. Our first visit to Islay was made perfect by staying here! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
Lori K — Google review
Was here one year ago and was impressed by both the service and the whiskey selection. This visit, however, proved underwhelming. (1) the bar didn’t even have a whiskey list and the vast majority of interesting / rare whiskeys that were available last year were no longer available; (2) my table ordered chicken wings as an appetizer, fish and chips, and a fish special. Food took more than 40 minutes to come out. Absolutely will not be returning on subsequent visits to Islay.
Andrew R — Google review
Lovely dinner with a inch of creativity with the traditional local staples. I would highly recommend the crab and peat smoked mussels entree which was delicious and the venison fruit pie with peat smoked mash and a whisky sauce. Also they feature décents wines (I know we are in whisky territory but we all need a break now and then!) offerings are typical and appropriate with reasonable prices. Service is fast and friendly but booking are essential to get in.
CM — Google review
We ate at the restaurant, BEST meal in a week! We wish we'd gotten 4 of the scallop appetizer, it was sweet, buttery, and perfectly cooked. I LOVED the salmon entree, juicy with a perfect crispness on top, and the pesto/parmesan potatoes and arugula were delicious. The crab bisque was sublime, not overly creamy like so many are. Great wine and whiskey menus. Make a reservation, you'll be so glad you experienced this restaurant.

Day 3

Northwest side of town
For day 3, we recommend exploring the northwest side side of town. Start the day off with Carraig Fhada Lighthouse, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to The Singing Sands. All together, your day would be filled with about 2 hours of non-stop fun.

Lighthouses
When visiting Islay, make sure to include a stop at the remarkable Carraig Fhada Lighthouse near Port Ellen harbor. This unique square-shaped lighthouse was constructed in 1832 by Walter Frederick Campbell, the Laird of Islay, in honor of his wife Lady Eleanor Campbell. It is the only square lighthouse in Scotland and stands as a picturesque coastal landmark.
Carraig Fhada Lighthouse on Islay Island is a hidden gem for those who appreciate both maritime history and stunning coastal landscapes. Perched on a rugged promontory, the lighthouse offers a striking view of the surrounding seascape and is a testament to the island’s maritime heritage. The lighthouse itself, with its classic white and black stripes, stands tall and proud against the backdrop of the crashing waves and rocky coastline. Its remote location adds to its charm, providing a sense of solitude and a connection with the untamed beauty of the natural environment. The journey to reach the lighthouse is equally rewarding, with scenic paths that lead you through picturesque terrain and offer spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. During my visit, the lighthouse exuded a serene and timeless quality, enhanced by the gentle sounds of the sea and the occasional call of seabirds. The historical significance of Carraig Fhada, combined with its dramatic setting, makes it a must-visit for anyone exploring Islay. The lighthouse serves as a poignant reminder of the island’s maritime past while offering a perfect spot for reflection and photography.

Fantastic scenery there. Will need a car to gain access to the lighthouse area.
Bryan T — Google review
Early 19C lighthouse which unusually is not the classic cylindrical shape. You can park quite close but there is a short walk to get closer. There used to be a bridge allowing access to the skerry on which the lighthouse is built but this is now closed. The lighthouse has been adopted by a fairly large group of wild goats that you have to walk past - the alpha male is cautious but not too aggressive 😉
Bernard S — Google review
Gorgeous lighthouse, I believe it's the only square lighthouse in Scotland. To park you can either park near cemetery, at the beginning of the road, where car park is quite big or try your luck and drive closer to the lighthouse and try to park there not obstructing access for the locals. While you are here I would recommend taking a short walk to Singing Sands beach, take a path behind last house.
Anna H — Google review
The lighthouse was built in 1832 by Walter Frederick Campbell in memory of Lady Ellenor Campbell. The lighthouse is 17 metres tall (three stories high), with the main section measuring 5.5 metre square. The smaller section has a 3.4 metre square tower. You can walk up to the bridge that leads to the lighthouse, though the bridge itself is closed.
Vadim S — Google review
Scenic place to visit. What’s not to like. A iconic lighthouse, Singing Sands a short walk away and peace and quiet. Seals can be spotted and the goats which roam around the Singing sands area.

The Singing Sands in Islay is a unique beach near the Oa Nature Reserve where the sands produce a humming sound when walked upon. The composition and size of the sands create this unusual phenomenon, making it an intriguing experience for visitors. Although not as remote as other beaches on Islay, it offers a peaceful atmosphere with opportunities to spot wildlife such as feral goats.
Very nice sandy beach, swimming is possible. Compared to most other beaches on Islay this beach is rather small, but when we were there we didn't encounter anyone else. Also one can watch the ferries passing by. There are goats nearby so one has to watch out not to step onto their manure.
Victoria T — Google review
Beautiful beach. Sadly the sand didn't sing for us, but it was a nice place to visit.
Livvy — Google review
A gorgeous but short walk from where you can park. Amazing to have the whole beach to yourself most of the time. Plenty of wildlife around too, theres a band of about 25 feral goats that live around here so you can usually see them. Just one to watch if you are bringing a dog.
Cameron H — Google review
Really really nice beach! Kinda small, but it compensates by its great looks!
Roberto A — Google review
Beautiful secluded beach to visit while you are here - definately worth the walk
Wtfomg 1 — Google review
Great little beach. Anywhere else 5 stars but on Islay there are many other more remote beaches. To get the sand to "sing" you need to look for the patches of greyer sand and kind of scuff your feet along. That should work but it isn't quite as obvious as, for example, the singing sands on the west coast of Eigg. Worth a trip though. You can park near the cemetery and walk but if you drive in towards the lighthouse you can actually park a lot closer if you're feeling lazy just don't block access as a few people have holiday houses along here.
Darren M — Google review

Restaurant
The Balaclava Byre is an impressive establishment that offers a fantastic culinary experience in the vicinity of Port Ellen on Islay. This restaurant provides an excellent addition to the local food scene, with its exceptional menu being among the best on the entire island. Although their Sunday roast tends to sell out quickly, there are plenty of other outstanding options available. The staff is both friendly and accommodating, as evidenced by their responsiveness to email bookings.
We arrived and were instantly impressed by the wooden chairs and tables there’s a cool story behind them, but I won’t ruin the surprise. Make sure to ask your waiter about it! We started with the tomato soup, and wow, it was amazing. It came with this caramelised butter that was honestly out of this world. For mains, we had the sole with warm potato salad, which was absolutely delicious, and the tagliatelle with mussels, which was fantastic. We also tried the beef burger with some amazing chips. Not gonna lie, the chips were great, but the burger was pretty average. The kids had beef burgers too, and they were just okay. To wrap it up, we had the lemon panna cotta super fresh and tasty and the brownie, which was next-level good. It was made with whiskey, and it was honestly the highlight of the meal. This place is definitely worth a visit, and I’d totally recommend it!

An absolute stunning lunch with really lovely staff. Everything we had was delicious but the crispy squid starter was the surprise discovery - so light and fresh, just perfection. The restaurant Annex is stunning, would be nice for formal celebrations too.

Amazing dinner at the Byre - staff all really friendly and gave us great recommendations. Smoked mussel gnocchi was possibly one of the best main courses I have ever had! Highly recommended

A unique little restaurant just outside of Port Ellen. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the food was overall good although I can't quite agree with other reviewrs about the smoked mussel gnocchi - but that is personal taste. Otherwise everything else was great both food and wine. If you are staying in Port Ellen and don't have a volunteer designated driver you can arrange a taxi at the No1 Pub in town
