Santa Caterina del Sasso is a 14th-century Catholic monastery situated above Lake Maggiore. Accessible by stairs, an elevator, or boat, this hermitage offers spectacular views of the lake. Legend has it that the hermitage was founded when a local merchant prayed to Saint Caterina during a storm in 1170. The area also offers hiking trails and mountain resorts such as Sasso del Ferro with its old cableway providing stunning panoramic views.
The most beautiful spot in lake Maggiore. It takes a bit of time to get there from stressa but it's so incredible that it certainly justified the effort. Plenty of parking. Lift to go up and down lake level. The ferry boat is below. Toilets. Ticket for the hermit pays off and it is a living religious place that has been growing over the centuries
Georginamgo — Google review
The visit of santa Caterina was a bit underwhelming for me, but with great views. Boat tickets were fairly cheap circa 7€ adult and 5€ senior. The boat trip was 5-10 minutes and the boats depart pretty often with clearly stated times. Unfortunately we forgot to establish our returning time and closely missed our trip back to Stresa and there was a lunch break and we had to wait for the next boat for 2 hours. Overall, great, just plan when you want to board.
Michal Ž — Google review
Not worth the 5€ honestly. There's nothing to see except the beautiful panorama which should be free anyway. If you want to take the elevator back up and not do the 100 stairs, you need to pay extra and if you arrived at the elevator, since the machine that sells the tickets is broken, you have to go back to the church and buy from the lady in the shop. This really annoyed us, so we took the stairs.
Anca A — Google review
We drove there. They have a huge free parking. You have 200 something stone stairs to the monastery . Very well maintained and for people with disabilities there Is also an elevator available for a small fee. The place it's worth a visit for the location and the efforts of building and maintaining such a monastery built and carved in stone.
Sergiu A — Google review
Amazing place to visit. Enjoy the church and the story. There is an elevator to go up and down if you wish to use it. Only for 1 EUR.
Yuni S — Google review
Absolutely breathtaking place, remember to wear your track shoes unless you prefer to take the lift down.
Christina C — Google review
It was a nice sightseeing place, photogenic. You can also opt to take the evaluator up and down instead of taking the stairs.

Beautiful. Entry for an adult is 5€. Worth a visit!

Grotta del Beato Alberto, a stunning destination on the picturesque Lake Maggiore, offers visitors an exclusive haven of tranquility and natural splendor. Nestled amidst breathtaking mountains and overlooking the glistening lake, this enchanting tourist attraction captivates with its unparalleled beauty. The serene ambiance is complemented by the soothing melodies of church music softly playing through a speaker, creating an atmosphere that is truly captivating.
I say it’s worth the €5,- .. stunning monastery with beautiful views and a beautiful chapel with mommy
Sabine B — Google review
I still don’t understand what I paid €5 for… I arrived there by boat, which I had already paid for, and then when I got there I went up the stairs for like 5 minutes to see the view. and when I wanted to go back down, and they asked me to pay €5? For using the stairs? I didn’t even want to go to the church, just wanted to walk around. Even if you go to the church, which is just a tiny room, it’s not worth €5. Ridiculous. And the staff and ticketing people were extremely rude, unhelpful and hostile.

(Translated by Google) Not recommended for families. We took the ferry from Stresa. The ride is beautiful. But the monastery, or rather the accessible area, is very small. With children (under 10) who aren't interested, it takes 15 minutes to walk everywhere. It's definitely a very beautiful place, steeped in history for believers or those interested in history. We went there because the tourist information office had recommended it as a day trip destination.

Beautiful place regarding the lake and the surroundings , the bar Kactus cafe near the lake also a good place to have some coffe or soft drinks, the problem are the locals they seem to be block on the community only as our entire stay was filled with whispering and strange looks towards me and my family, I’m not saying that they are racist I’m saying they seem like they don’t like outsiders that are not part of their community, if the spaces are privately own their should a least a sign. The restaurant Bistrot Laguna Blu offers amazing food, particularly their seafood Spaghetti that are truly impressive. The portions are generous, packed with a variety of seafood, and the overall quality is outstanding. It surpasses some fancy places we've been to. We have returned multiple times and thoroughly enjoyed both the food and drinks. One possible drawback is that depending on the number of people present, the service may be average. However, the stunning view of Lago compensates for it.
The food is delicious. The view is amazing. The staff is very friendly and satisfied all our whims. I fully recommend this restaurant!

Good location with lake view. Pasta was alright. Pizza was good thin crust. They serve pizza bread while you waiting for food. This popular place can get busy though they only have 2 waitress working when we there but okay as we did not have to wait long time for food and bill.

We spent a very nice evening here, two adults and three kids. Food, service and seating was outstanding. We loved the atmosphere at the small boat harbor, and the sunset over the lake. The only small minus is the toilet, woukd have needed a thorough cleaning.

Not exactly sure how to rate here, the Pizza was actually really good and the location very beautiful. How ever there was a slight mix up which let to us waiting for about 45 Minutes, at the end we left happy. The beautiful view and small harbour helped with the waiting time. We would most likely come back.

Off season dinner became unexpected very nice and authentic :) dining with the lake view and locals was a fantastic experience. Food was good, homemade pasta, fresh salmon and tasteful vegetables. Unfortunately, we were not lucky in this place. My first review with a rating of 2. I put 2 stars only because the food was brought quickly. But due to the fact that we did not order drinks (we never take them for dinner), the staff treated us with no respect, with an arrogant look. We ordered a branded pizza (12€) - it was brought almost cold with a raw egg (seen in the photo) and frozen asparagus. My seafood pasta was ok. Now it becomes clear why in other places there is a full booking in the evening, but here there are empty seats. I do not recommend! It is better to book a table in advance at restaurants nearby.

A rainy day in off-season allowed us to visit Santa Caterina hermitage. Very nice. And we had lunch at La Vecchia Fontana. It was just great in every sense. Inside features a comfortable and cosy rustic dining. We receieved a warm welcome from the staff and the chef. The food was grandiose from misto fritta to mushroom tagliatelle and veal in red wine and pollenta. Just marvelous. To continue on this high note, we finished with chocolate mousse (fondant au chocolat noir), icecream in Grand Marnier and a frozen icegream meringue. The bill was sweetly low for this fantastic lunch and wine. Should you be so lucky to be around this part of the lake: do not hesitate one second, it will make up your memory for fine eating.

So far I have eaten there only once but I can say food is great. I had braised beef with grilled polenta and porcini mushrooms with some Barbera and strudel as dessert. Everything delicious and genuinely home made. Cozy atmosphere where staff is very warm yet professional. Plenty of seats inside and some tables oustide too. Between the restaurant and the street there's the parking so if you choose to take seat on the terrace you won't be bothered by cars noise. Highly recommended. I will go back for sure :).
