Gharb in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Gharb, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Gharb is one of Gozo’s oldest villages, known for its quiet rural setting, traditional stone houses, and views over terraced fields. Visitors can see important religious sites like the Basilica of Ta’ Pinu, a national shrine just outside the village, and several historic chapels. The area offers easy access to coastal walks, cliffs, and countryside trails, making it a good base for hiking and exploring western Gozo. A small folklore museum and local craft workshops give a glimpse into traditional Gozitan life.
With favorites like Wied il-Mielaħ Window, Azure Window (collapsed natural arch), and Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Ic-Centru Bar and Restaurant and Ta' Dbiegi cafettaria so you can get the best taste of Gharb while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Nestled in the charming village of Gharb, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu is a stunning example of Neo-Romantic architecture that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding sea. This revered site has been a pilgrimage destination since 1883 when a local woman reported hearing the voice of the Virgin Mary.
A truly special and peaceful place. The Ta’ Pinu Basilica is not only beautiful from the outside with its stunning architecture, but the inside has a calming, spiritual atmosphere. The story behind it — of a local woman hearing the Virgin Mary’s voice in the 1880s — makes the place feel even more meaningful. There are rooms full of heartfelt messages and thank-yous from people all over the world. If you have time, walk up the nearby hill with the Stations of the Cross — the views are amazing. Definitely worth a visit whether you’re religious or just appreciate history and quiet places.

Beautiful Basilica. Take the time to walk around. Sad to see all of the items in the shrine rooms. Walk up the hill opposite to see marble statues and get a great view if you ignore the crane 😊
Julie F — Google review
Very nice enormous basilica with a touching story emblematic of the history and culture of Malta. Eminently walkable area and along many tour bus routes for a 10-minute photo stop. Highly recommend walking around outside and inside to catch all the gems of this wonderful place!
Danielle O — Google review
This a beautiful Catholic Shrine of Blessed irgin Mary. The story of the church and Shrine is uniquely beautiful. The church has been build out of small Chapel where the picture of Mother Mary of TA' PINU is located. Inside is the gallery with pictures and letters of all miracles and healing that took place as of Mother Mary and Frances. The basilica is very peaceful inside. The church is not open at all times. Modesty is necessary when coming to holy space like Shrine.
Viola M — Google review
Must visit place Mosaic work is awesome at entrance. Church is quite different to all others in terms of interior architecture and design.
Chalapathi M — Google review
Another amazing architectural wonder. Such a scared site and a blessing to experience this powerful space. So cool to check out even though I am not religious but rather spiritual.
Luke L — Google review
A truly breathtaking church in Gozo. The architecture is stunning inside and out, with incredible attention to detail. You can really feel the history and spirituality as soon as you walk in – it has such a peaceful and moving atmosphere. A must-visit if you’re exploring Gozo, whether for faith, history, or just to admire its beauty.
Sofie S — Google review
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu, nestled in the peaceful Gozitan countryside, is undoubtedly an impressive neo-Romanesque structure. I enjoyed visiting the site, and its architectural grandeur, particularly the towering bell tower and the beautiful mosaics outside, certainly make for a visually striking destination. It has a compelling history rooted in local tradition, dating back to a 19th-century peasant who allegedly heard the voice of the Virgin Mary in the original, much smaller chapel, which now sits behind the main altar. While the atmosphere is serene and it holds immense religious importance for the Maltese, beyond the stunning facade and the interesting back story, the visit itself wasn't a supremely unforgettable experience compared to some other world-class pilgrimage sites. Nevertheless, it is a significant cultural and spiritual landmark on the island of Gozo.

Wied il-Mielaħ is a scenic rock formation by the sea resembling a window that can be reached through a long stairway with handrails. While it's challenging to access, visitors can enjoy the stunning view of the crystal-clear water reflecting the sunshine through the blue window. The best time to visit is in the morning or at noon before shadows form due to westward sunsets. The high cliffs and deep blue waters offer an incredible view that one must experience for an extended period.
It may remind a bit of Azure Window, but in any case another beautiful place in Gozo that you should not miss. The road by car is a bit narrower, but not stressful, at the end you will also find a parking space 😁. You can enjoy breathtaking views, this is definitely worth it. I am more worried that climbers and turists will gradually disturb this place and it will collapse like its more famous brother in 2017, which would be a shame.
Peter S — Google review
Beautiful! Haven't got a chance to see Azure Window when it was still above the ground, but I think Wied il-Mielah is a nice "replacement". It's amazing, the view made me breathtakingly calm ❤️ You can make a lunch break there as well! ☀️☺️☀️ I recommend walking in Gozo, in general, but especially to this place. It's nice to go with the bus to Zebbug and from there walk to Wied il-Gharsi (amazing) and then to wied il-mielah and from there to Gharb or San Lawrenz to take a bus back. And for those who really like to walk It's nice to go from wied il-mielah to the "sunsets cliffs" (probably through Gharb) most beautiful spot and by the cliffs It's a nice walk down to Dwejra Bay, but this route is for Island explorers, highly recommended for everyone tho. Cheers, see you at the cliffs 💃 (Video is from a really windy day, don't be scared 😅)
Maja G — Google review
...I can’t find a word good enough to describe Malta’s stunning nature. Wied il-Mielah stands out with its beautiful coastal cliffs… a true rest for the soul and body…
Tanja B — Google review
Spectacular stone arch that you can walk out across on the left side of the valley (best to do this first, if you don't like heights), with a narrow staircase on the right side leading down to a great view of what's beneath where you were just standing (or not). It's an easy walk and there's parking nearby. If you go past the top of the stairs instead, out to the edge, then follow the clifftop around to the right, there's a ledge a couple of meters wide that you can walk along to see a huge cave a little further along the coast. Back at the car park, there's a road to the east that takes you along the cliffs to Wied il-Għasri, which is also well worth a visit.
John B — Google review
It was an interesting drive to get there. It's a really fun one :)) The place itself is beautiful, easy to get to. There are stairs that go down, they're well made and safe.
Aurėja M — Google review
Walk the trail down the side of the cliff. You are limited in view as it is blocked off towards the end Because it has become eroded, but still a wonderful view.
Jonesphoto_91 P — Google review
A fantastic geological experience, a truly wonderful visit to this rock formation that 30 million years ago was the seabed, if you look carefully you will find millions of fossils buried in the rock on which you walk. You can also take a walk down a staircase to view the Weid IL Mielah window

Very beautiful landscape and veiw over the sea and surounding cliffs. The Window looks like on the end of the world. It is also good for climbing. In that part of the island you can see a lot of cliffs over 50m heigh.

Dwejra Bay is a stunning natural attraction located in San Lawrenz, a picturesque village in western Gozo. Although the famous Azure Window rock formation has collapsed, the area still boasts remarkable beauty and historical significance. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking sunset views, explore diving sites suitable for various skill levels such as the blue hole and inland sea, and marvel at Fungus Rock.
Dwjera is wonderful. Great to explore for fossils or take a boat trip is weather permits. One of the top diving sites as well. Take time to visit the Dwejra Tower and the maritime museum. Very beautiful views and information.
Pierre D — Google review
We had a fantastic time visiting Dwejra Bay! The panoramic views are absolutely breathtaking — a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers. You can enjoy the Inland Sea, unique rock formations, and even take a short boat ride through sea caves. There’s a convenient car park nearby, which made access easy even with kids. Toilets are available, and the area feels clean and well-kept. There’s also a small café (Getaria) where we grabbed some snacks and drinks — very handy!
Kabir A — Google review
Actually, we don’t go to Dwejra Bay, we went to The Inland Sea and the Blue Hole Dive site. The inland sea is a lovely place to visit, it is hot with little or no breeze down there. There is not much shade around except at the cafe. The Blue Hole dive site is impressive. We only spent about an hour there which was long enough. The Zip line looks great as well.
Glenn H — Google review
A stunning place to visit, It has everything, caves in the sea of which you can swim to or take a small boat trip through. Massive impressive cliffs surrounding this bay , lots of walking and magnificent sea views including views of the historic remains of the Azure window.

If you’re staying in Malta, Well worth taking the ferry over to Gozo and visiting this unique place where you can take a short boat ride for €5 per person (cash only)… then take a swim in the shallow clear water next to the boat trips ! Overall amazing experience !!!

The Azure Window is a magnificent sight that captivates all who visit, making it an ideal place to spend time soaking in the wonders of the world.
visited with family on 13.7.2025 in the early evening. Restaurant in a strategic location with a beautiful view of the local nature and the sea. Upon entering, the attentive staff immediately noticed us and seated us. The restaurant is clean and cozy. I had fresh fish for dinner, my girlfriend had spaghetti with seafood, and my child had chicken nuggets. Rating? I was very pleasantly surprised by the professional approach of the staff, who were very helpful. The food was very tasty and aesthetically at a high level. As a traveler, I recommend this restaurant and thank you very much for a great experience. Salut from Czech republic 🇨🇿

Great place! Delicious, fresh dishes – the grilled fish was perfectly seasoned and juicy, and the tomato bruschetta tasted just like in Italy. Friendly service and a pleasant atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit!
Tomasz K — Google review
I've been in Gozo for two weeks now and have tried most of the island's top restaurants — some fancy, some expensive, and some with just average food. But this place truly stands out. The service is absolutely fantastic, the food is incredibly tasty, and the prices are very reasonable. It’s rare to find a place that hits all the marks so well. During our visit, we also had a great conversation with the owner, who has been running this restaurant for over 40 years. He spoke with genuine passion about keeping things simple and honest — no unnecessary twists, no over-seasoning, just real, traditional cooking done right. They use fresh fish from local suppliers, which makes a huge difference in flavor and quality. You can feel that this place has soul. After all the places we’ve tried, this is by far the best. I can’t recommend it enough.
Lukasz M — Google review
Very good food for such a commercial place. I recommend the chicken with almond sauce. On the menu, you’ll find classic beers, as well as a wide selection of cocktails and wines. The prices are pretty much the same as in Valletta, Malta.

Best restaurant what we have discovered while staying in Gozo! Place with devoted attention to the slightest detail - good quality food, exceptional service, friendly and welcoming staff, nice atmosphere and of course affordable prices. We even enjoyed eating at this place two times for dinner - just because one time experience here wasn’t enough! And of course wonderful sunset!👍
Ervīns S — Google review
Exceptional service from Irmine, and this is with the lens of spending years working in top restaurants. Just perfect balance of attention and meaningful, not upselling type of advice. Thank you to chefs too, the food was made with taste, fresh and wonderful flavours. The breathtaking sunset is just round a corner, so worth visiting before or after to enjoy that. In daylight you get slightly distanced Dwejra bay view. Chill out background music makes it a definitely a relaxing meal during quieter time. Lovely experience to carry. Thank you. 🐟🐙🍅🫒

Great restaurant, we had a fresh fish of the day (Merluzzo), made with garlic and herbs and super delicious sides like veggies, french fries, potatoes and salad.
A. V — Google review
Amazing place with excellent view. Clean and people working there are very nice, smiling and helpful. Sea bass grilled very tasty. Only one dish was not good, french fries. Fried in deep oil and it was like potato drunk oil. So the feeling was to eat oil in shape of french fries. Beside that, perfect.

Azure Window, the collapsed natural arch on Gozo, was a breathtaking sight until it succumbed to the forces of nature in 2017. Despite its absence, the area still holds much allure. Adjacent to the Inland Sea and Blue Hole diving spot, it remains a popular tourist destination. The surrounding cliffs and rocky beaches offer picturesque views and opportunities for boating and snorkeling. Although the iconic arch is no more, visitors can still appreciate this unique geological wonder that stood for millennia.
It was a sad day when this beautiful rock arch on gozo was reclaimed by a stormy sea. Adjacent to the Inland sea and blue hole diving spot. on gozo, this arch featured in many historical movies. It was wonderful to catch the small bus from Vittorio Rabat out to Dwerja. Although the arch has gone the area still has much to offer. There is a lovely little rustic tumbledown cafe on the cobbles at Inland sea which is also still a favoured diving spot.It has very dangerous undercurrents so great care must be exercised.Fungus Rock is only a short walk across the salt pans which requires sturdy shoes. The whole area is overlooked by the 16th century Knights watchtower A terrific Viewpoint you can easily walk up to Still worth a visit to this beautiful area.

Unfortunately, Azure window does not exist. However, you can watch cliffs and caves with gorgeous water colors, and nearby is an amazing blue hole in which you can dive. A wonderful depth and lots of fish. Wonderful experience. I recommend.

I was so happy to visit very beautiful place. I like it so much. Goo thing is before taking boat we enter to the musium where the lady explained us very well about the place. It helped us alot and during boat trip we could understand what we see. Moreover, The guide who accompanied with boat also explwined and showed the famous places.

Very beautiful place, but unfortunately, the arch was destroyed about 6 years ago. Use the boat trip. It is not expensive - 5€ per person.
Vakhtang J — Google review
Even though the Azur window collapsed a couple of years ago, it remains a top touristic spot to visit in Gozo. Definitely once in a lifetime opportunity to see a collapsed nature phenomenon that has been there for thousands and thousands of years. The surrounding cliffs and rocky beaches are perfect Instaworthy locations and you can take a boat to go on the sea or go snorkeling. Top location in Gozo even getting a bit too touristic for my liking.

The Azure Window doesn't exist anymore. Doesn't matter. It's absolutely beautiful. Take a 4 euro boat trip and discover the caves and take a closer look. We definitely enjoyed it. Must go if you are in Gozo. It can be very very hot tho in summer, don't expect to find a nice relaxing place in the shadow!
Belgin S — Google review
So the arch has collapsed but it's still worth the time and effort. The Mediterranean Sea is incredibly beautiful. Insanely blue! The cliff walls were beautiful. I loved it 😍. The blue in my pictures IS how blue it was that day. I have not altered my photos in any way.

This was the best rabbit I've ever eaten, except for the one my wife makes. Moderate prices, very friendly service. Highly recommended.

We ordered a Gorgonzola burger & seafood pasta. The burger was dry & over cooked, good size but burned bun & not much of Gorgonzola or bacon made it very ordinary & not worth its €11 price. However the fries were hot & good. The seafood pasta was good with clams & mussels but not much else of seafood. Good sauce but didn’t seem homemade sauce.

We had a fantastic time at this restaurant. The pizza was absolutely delicious — perfectly baked, with fresh ingredients and a rich, authentic flavor that really stood out. You can tell they put care into every detail. What truly made our visit special was the warm and welcoming service. George, the host, was outstanding — incredibly friendly, funny, attentive, and made us feel right at home. He gave great recommendations and ensured we had everything we needed throughout our meal. If you're looking for a place with great food and even better hospitality, this is the spot. Highly recommended — we’ll definitely be coming back!

I only came the once which is a shame as I did think I would have liked to visit more. There was a lovely welcome and I was shown through the (noisy) bar into the restaurant. I chose not to sit facing the enormous TV with football playing! I had the mushroom pizza, which was excellent and a good price and a glass of wine. The service was without fault. The menu had many meals I would have liked so I do hope to go again.

What a gem of a spot! The pizza is absolutely amazing — especially the Margherita. Fresh, flavorful, and just hits the spot. Easily one of the best we had on the island. But what really made the evening unforgettable was George, our waiter. Not only was he super friendly and welcoming, but when he noticed we wanted to take a group photo with our friends, he didn’t just offer to help — he went above and beyond. George found us the perfect photo spots near the cathedral and made sure we got a beautiful memory to take home. It’s rare to meet someone so genuine and thoughtful — he truly made us feel like locals for the night. The place itself has such a relaxed, authentic vibe. Mostly locals, great energy, and that calm, peaceful Maltese atmosphere you instantly fall in love with. And being right next to the stunning cathedral just adds to the magic. Can’t recommend this place enough — will definitely be back!

Great little find in the craft village. Just wanted a little bite to eat, at risk of sounding like a snob didn't look like anything special, but the food and service were great! Try the bruschetta and paprika chips. The salmon ciabatta was lovely. Greek salad and chicken caesar salad were great too. Service was good. Would recommend - it may be overlooked due to the larger pastry cafe on site, but worth a visit! Lots of the photos on Google reviews are of the pastry place and not of this little cafe!

The worst place I have ever been too on Gozo. Was here recently with friends as was told the new chef was amazing. Lets just talk about poor personal hygiene first of all and when I asked for my food I was rudely met my Andrew or Andy asking me to leave as the place was owned by police and he was well connected. We stopped in tonight after noticing the great reviews online - and we certainly weren’t disappointed! We had the fresh whole fish of the day, which was sea bass, and it was *chef’s kiss* to die for. Even the sides, roasted veg and tomato sauce, were amazing. My son had the penne carbonara, and it was also very tasty. If you’re looking for fresh fish, this is the place to go!

After a long and winding road from the opposite side of Malta, Marsaskala, to Gharb, we decided to have dinner at the nearest place possible, Salvina’s. Didn’t regret it, felt immediately welcome, taken care of, and the woodburning stove did the rest. As starters I had smoked fish with salad, for mains a salmon done just the way I like it, a couple of Cisk's to go along, and an especially custom made cortado (mini cappuccino, sort of) to finish of the chocolate gateaux with cream. Of course, there's always room for improvement: the fish fingers should be replaced by Dutch "vis sticks", kids will love it!

I was looking a place to eat dinner, during my first night in Gozo. So, I found that Salvina was still open and entered. The waiter, welcomed me really friendly and took me to the available table. After I checked the menu, I decided to try the local dish of rabbit stew and a beer. I received the beer and some really nice grilled bread. After 15-20 minutes, from the moment I placed the order, I received a big dish with hot stew and three fresh made side dishes. I really enjoyed. The meat was so good cooked that you didn't need the use of the knife. The side dishes, great. I really enjoyed the vegetables. I really recommend that place. Just one thing. Please update the menu that you got at the entrance. The prices were different with the one that I received at the table :)

Lovely local restaurant with local foods. Had a perfect swordfish steak and octopus as well. All served very quickly with a sweet man running the place. Would recommend if staying in Gharb.

We had two really nice meals here. Service was prompt and very friendly - the food was really nice, with a slightly 'nostalgic' twist to the menu - prawn cocktail, chicken Kiev and beef stroganoff taking pride of place alongside the more usual items. We also had rib eye and prawns, both of which were expertly grilled. Lovely end of town to boot. Not the cheapest, but definitely worth a visit or two.

Great little restaurant in the heart of Gharb. The Maltese sharing platter (with local sausage, cheese and rabbit, fried ravioli and Mediterranean veg) was delicious, the pasta dishes were really tasty too, and we had another local speciality (imqaret - a fried pastry filled with dates) for dessert. Prices are very reasonable, and there's also a good selection of wines, including local ones.

Our first time here was very good. Friendly & good service. We ordered the Pomegranate salad which was tasty, tangy and fresh though it had a bit too much dressing. The beef cheek pasta was absolutely delicious. Pasta cooked perfectly, the meat was very tender & full of taste. Lastly the mushroom beef burger was cooked right, medium, nice grill taste. Happy with our first time dinner here.

Delicious food and great service. The skate fish was tender and juicy melts in your mouth. Paccheri with beef cheek and truffle amazing and for the deserts all freshly prepared. Must try the cannoli, they are worth it! Decent prices and most importantly all food was good!!!

Everything we had at il-Kunvent was delicious, from the complimentary beet soup to start to the incredible mains (burrata pizza and spaghetti rabbit) and a perfect dessert to finish, chocolate fondant and date fritter. They also very kindly let us eat outside despite being fully booked for the indoor area- highly recommended to anyone who wants a truly superb meal on Gozo!

My first time here and I can’t wait to be back! The food is so good, atmosphere is great and the staff are so lovely and welcoming. I’m sensitive to gluten and had a plate of pasta with beef cheeks and truffle which was divine.. my family also enjoyed their meals a lot - really recommend this place :)

Il-Kunvent Restaurant in Gharb is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, the staff greeted us with genuine warmth and professionalism — their smiles instantly made us feel at home. The service throughout the evening was flawless: attentive without being intrusive, and always with a personal touch. The food was nothing short of exceptional. The sea bass ceviche was a true highlight — a perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavours, with fish so fresh it literally melted on the tongue. The beef cheek pasta was equally impressive: rich, hearty, and cooked to perfection, offering comfort and sophistication in every bite. Everything from the presentation to the atmosphere was spot-on. You can tell that everyone at Il-Kunvent truly cares about creating an unforgettable dining experience. If you’re visiting Gozo, don’t miss this place. It’s easily one of the best meals we’ve had on the island — a perfect blend of warmth, flavour, and genuine hospitality.
