History Museums
The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society, established in 1963, is dedicated to preserving the culture of Hammerfest. It showcases exhibits on Arctic hunting and local history and shares space with the tourist office. For a fee of 200kr, visitors can become life members and receive a certificate, ID card, sticker, and pin.
Worthwhile stop off. There are of course no polar bears in Hammerfest but if in Arctic Norway, please swing by this excellent exhibit and museum and join this Society! Membership is only possible if you sign up in person. You have to stop in and learn about the significance of this to fully understand, but in any case, it was a memorable visit.
Nate L — Google review
It's a pleasant place to learn about polar bears and the town's brief history. While not large, it's a worthwhile visit, conveniently located in town. The stuffed polar bear makes for a nice photo opportunity, and there's even a souvenir shop if you'd like to purchase some items during your stay in Hammerfest.
Tony C — Google review
Good wee museum. I wouldn’t bother with the rip off society fee…unless that is why you visited. Lots of exhibits and history for a small place. Don’t stroke the polar bear! Gift shop too. One of the best things to do in Hammerfest on a rainy day. Wander around the back of Hammerfest near a lake for wild reindeer.
Jill B — Google review
It's a very small (but free) museum with some interesting historical items and pictures. But it looks like most people come for the kitschy membership to the Society (that's what we and the next 5 people after us came for) that gives you a certificate, a sticker and a small polar bear pin. Docked one star because it used to be about $20, which seemed reasonable for something kind of touristy but fun, but it's now double that (402 NOK), which feels right on the edge of tourist rip off.
Alexandra S — Google review
The organization was founded since 1963. You will see the history and artic animal.
Pitakchai T — Google review
Small place. Just 2 rooms. Showcases arctic animals and hunting equipment used. This was how they survived I that harsh environment before modern times. They also have a nice souvenir shop attached.
Danish P — Google review
What a fun little idea, the membership. Sure, it is a gimmick, but it is super cute and simply a must when you visit Hammerfest! The museum is interesting and the gift shop very good. A recommended attraction for sure!
Poli H — Google review
If you are in town it is worth a visit. They have a well displayed collection of interesting animals and artifacts. Free entry is a bonus. Kids will enjoy seeing this place too.

A proper brown pub with pan American pizza. Probably the best pizza in town, the prices are reasonable.
Ingve M — Google review
Pizza was really delicious. Very nice interior but during my stay only few customers.
Riku M — Google review
Be wary that the pizza is not an italian style pizza but some kind of local style? You have to order at the bar, no table service A tad too dark, more light would be pleasant
Adrian J — Google review
American Pizza, full with meat and Chillisauce. As promised on the menu. Friendly Service and maritime interior. Pizza is not our style-personal taste. Not too expensive.
Carsten F — Google review
Nice place with very helpful staff. You can mix two different pizzas baked in an oven with american style dough. You can chose been six different raft beers. Prices are reasonable.
Mateja K — Google review
Really good pizza. You can mix different flavours on 1 pizza (we did that)The friendly waitress helped us with choosing the pizza. The wine combined with the XXL pizza was really cheap!! Price/quality 👌🏻

The Museum of Reconstruction in Finnmark and Northern Troms offers a compelling look into the region's recovery after World War II. Through original film, photographs, and town artifacts, visitors can learn about the destruction caused by the war and the subsequent rebuilding efforts that led to the construction of thousands of new homes. The museum also showcases how this reconstruction influenced Norwegian design trends beyond the region. With engaging displays, architectural plans, and a viewing gallery offering panoramic views, it provides an immersive experience for all ages.
Excellent museum, kids enjoyed it. Much more engaging than I imagined and happy to highly recommend it! Fantastic room reconstructions, and architectural plans and views from the tower viewing gallery. A highlight of our trip.
Greg S — Google review
One of the best small museums in Norway. The exhibit is about the reconstruction time after WW2 Make sure you go to the 4 th floor for the view
Andrea W — Google review
Very interesting museum, dealing largely with what happened in Northern Norway during WW2, and how it was rebuilt afterwards. I could have spent longer there if I'd had the time. The view over the town of Hammerfest from the 4th floor of the tower is well worth it. Tickets were very reasonable in price also.
Carl M — Google review
The main exhibition was very interesting, exhibits have info in Norwegian and English, and we heard a guide giving a talk in German and English. Lots of photos, plus other exhibits (clothing, furniture etc) and mock-ups of rooms in a standard post-war house. Cafe also good; basic coffee and cakes. There were a couple of other rooms with text only in Norwegian, and a viewing tower which offers good views of the town and surrounds.
Steve G — Google review
Unexpectedly interesting, with the bonus that you get to go to the tower and have a great 360 view of the town. I am very happy I visited it and highly recommend it!
Poli H — Google review
Absolutely fantastic museum showing one of the not so well known aspects of WW2 - the "scorched earth" burning of entire towns along the Norwegian coast by the retreating Germans, and the massive reconstruction that was necessary after the war ended.
Marc S — Google review
An amazing display of occupation and evacuation hardships in northern Norway in WWII. Everything was burned in the later part of the wat, when German army was retreating. Then followed the Reconstruction, the building of 10,000 or so new homes to bring people back. These were used to 'norwegianise' Finnmark by introducing uniform dwellings, but also brought new designs in furniture and homewares which became popular far beyond the region. Area around this museum in Hammerfest is full of Reconstruction homes and has a protected architectural status
Olga T — Google review
A very important and well done museum explaining an important time of norwegian history. Very moving. Highly recommended.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Struve Geodetic Arc in Norway is a UNESCO-listed project dating back to 1816, aimed at accurately measuring the Earth's size and shape. This geodetic arc spans from Norway to the Black Sea and comprises triangulation points used in the 19th century for these calculations. The monument, inscribed in Norwegian and Latin, sits atop a mound with wheelchair-friendly access. Visitors can enjoy English information about the arc and area, as well as stunning views of the harbor.
Very interesting. If you have an interest in science, navigation or charts this is well worth a visit. A monument to the truly remarkable accomplishments of humans before our modern technology. These guys were made of tougher stuff. It’s worth visiting and reading about. Gives you an appreciation for our easy technology and transport.
‘Talie W — Google review
I noticed that there was a UNESCO site here, but really had no idea what it was all about. after a bit of research, it appears that the Struve Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, traversing 10 countries and over 2,820 km. These survey points were carried out from 1816-1855 by astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve. They represented the first accurate measuring of a long segment of a meridian which helped to establish the exact size and shape of the planet and marked an important step in the development of earth sciences and topographic mapping. The 'monument' itself then is a placeholder for a survey point and represents this mathematical and engineering historical event.
Graham T — Google review
This point is historical and interest to see. But be careful, if Hurtigruten arrives same time and lot of travelers comes to see this. Then it is difficult to take pictures etc.. Generally Hammerfest is nice north place, where most of places are easy to reach by walking. But route between Skaidi - Hammerfest have lot constructions in summer 2024. Next summer can be better to drive there.

We "only" had cocktails and they were so good. Just told the bartender what we liked and he created on scratch - explained what he was doing, very skillful and the result was amazing every time. Thanks for a great experience. Can highly recommend for a fine Drink.

Been there for a little lunch on our roadtrip. Nice, cosy and friendly place with a good view. Mostly important fresh quality food focused on burgers, but more for every taste. Compined my vegan Patty with a regular Jalapenoburger. No problems speaking English as always in Norway. Would love to see the drinks listed and an english menue in future. Would stay there again already.

Popped in for a couple of beers and had some "finger food" great service and food. The bartender was helpful and very knowledgeable about the bar and surrounding area.
John B — Google review
I had the omelette, it was perfect. Waiting time was a little long (I'm waiting for a bus), other than that I really like this place 😊
Anders A — Google review
Bad service and that's why we left there before ordering food. We chose the table ourselves and they gave us the menus but didn't say anything about ordering food from the cash desk. So we waited service for a long time and when we went to ask for it the answer was "we don't take orders from the tables". I told her we didn't know that and she said "it's okay" like it was customer's mistake... Seriously: there were two free waiters talking to each others and they didn't think to come to us and explain about their systems? They definitely heard that we were tourists. We also saw one other group walking away without service.

Awesome experience. Great service, friendly staff. Amazing food, proper portions, great taste. Definitely recommend the ice tea!

This was exactly what we needed on a wet and cold day on the motorcycles. We came through Hammerfest and needed a place for lunch, and luckily enough there was enough space for the two of us. The area for seating is small, and during the day this can lead to issues at busy times, but it was comfortable and we had enough space for out food and drinks. The staff was friendly and the owner was happy to engage with all guests. For those looking for something sweet or something savoury it is well worth a stop in Hammerfest.
Carl C — Google review
Most of the menu options were sweet waffles and crepes etc. Not my thing but was very happy with the omelette. My partner on crime had the maple bacon waffle. Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere.
Raelene A — Google review
We visited today on a day trip (cruise stopover) and it was perfect. Cheese crepe came with Philadelphia, cream, strawberries and blueberries - and it worked! They were also able to cater for a gluten-free, vegetarian diet. Coffees also good (Costa) and staff were friendly and efficient. Well worth it.

Friendly, quick. Delicious food and good coffee. Slightly less sweet would be great. How about a sweetness order option? Music should be less obtrusive.

Located by the boardwalk at the harbor, Du Verden Matbar offers a stunning view from its large windows on both floors. The restaurant is praised for its lovely decor and is considered the best place to hang out in Hammerfest. Guests recommend trying Norwegian dishes like whale meat with salad and lemon for starters, reindeer with potatoes and carrots as a main course, or the delicious fish soup.
First of all, the placement next to the boardwalk at the harbour is wonderful. Nice big Windows on both floors in restaurant so you can enjoy the view while eating. I chose the whale Meat with salat and lemon for appetizer and reindeer with potato and carrots as the main course. The only bad thing i can say about the place, is that the waiter couldnt tell me what kind of whale it was. All in all, a very pleasent visit

This place is right at the cruise port (walking distance if in town on cruise). Our family of 6 (from US) stopped in for lunch after walking the town for a few hours. The staff was very friendly as we entered and said menus will have English. Highly recommend the reindeer pizza (#1 on menu) for a local flair of pizza! Two pizzas was perfect for our 6 adults. We also had a “meat lovers” type pizza that had some local type sausage, ham, pepperoni, and beef. Great doors and great staff!

Very good Sushi, among the best I've had. Good wine and cakes as well. They also have a few no fish dishes.

Really great sushi and amazing whale carpaccio! Worth a visit. However, the beers on tap were spoiled - most likely as they don't have enough customers to empty the draft within a few days. The design of the place is very outdated and could benefit from some renovation.

First of all the food is great, get a Miso and any of the maki and you can't go wrong. However the place itself feels a bit cold and empty, feeling almost lost in the big empty space.
Erik N — Google review
Very tasty sushi, with both common and very exotic ingredients. Relaxed atmosphere. Parking outside is relatively expensive, parking at the nearby church ~200m away) is much cheaper. Being in Norway, they do serve whale meat sushi. Tasty, but not to everyone's liking, so consider who you bring with you.

(Translated by Google) In the area of "The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society," there's absolutely no one to help you. We went there with the intention of becoming members, but the tablets weren't working and no one was there, so 400KON less for the bears. At the tourist office, we were lucky enough to be served by the least clever and least intelligent guy on the planet. It's not worth transcribing the conversation here, but because of him, they gave me a huge fine. Due to scheduling and transportation issues, we could only pay by bank transfer, and adding expenses and everything else they can invent, it doubled. Thanks for nothing, smart guy.

Kafe Nordvest is a closed café in Hammerfest, Troms og Finnmark. It was known for its delicious and affordable food, as well as good coffee and cake. While it's no longer open, it received positive reviews for its offerings. The area also features other dining options like Enjoy Cafe & Thai Take Away, which serves Thai cuisine and a good burger menu. Additionally, there are restaurants such as Stakeriet Nordisk Gourmet Tapas Restaurant in Alta and clinics nearby.
Everyone is so friendly and the food is delicious. It’s a wonderful place to have lunch and a bonus to know you are supporting a business that provides opportunities to women settling in the community. Love it here ❤️
Linnea S — Google review
Dropped in for coffee and leaned it is community project to support integration of women into society through training and working with them in the cafe. Each woman prepares her special dish for the menu. The day we were there, there was green curry chicken, sweet sour chicken, chicken tikka, samosas & falefal. It was a pity we had lunch and could not taste the food - but the dishes were all prepared fresh on site. We did get a chance to taste the freshly baked cookie with chocolate and was buttery and melts in the mouth. Oatmilk is available as a milk alternative. Tammy shared the concept of the place and was friendly and kind. Despite a short hour break, we were happy to have visited the cafe and hope for others to enjoy the variety of dishes on offer.

Lookouts
Toke Hammerfest offers a stunning panoramic view of the small city of Hammerfest and its surrounding areas. Visitors can reach this vantage point either by car or by taking a hiking trail up the hill from the city. The view is particularly breathtaking, especially when the city and harbor are illuminated at night. It's recommended to drive there for an easier journey, but if taking the bus, it's advisable to confirm with the driver which stop to get off at.
Google maps will show you the road walk up - that clocks in at 3.2km and 47 minutes but there is a walking path up from the city center - a bit of a steep climb but very doable at about 15 minutes. We had 1.25 hours of free time from our ship and we had plenty of time to get there and back plus relaxing time at the top and a little window shopping in town: 50 minutes round trip. Would have stopped for a beer in town but the lines were long at lunch time.
David W — Google review
A great place to take a look at the city from the top of the hill. It's some 15 minutes walk up the hill, but at the top you will relax walking around, taking pictures, and looking at the city. Some went there to see see the "sunset".
Piotr K — Google review
Went here in winter time around afternoon, beautiful view, but it’s much easier to drive there. If you decided to take the bus, ask the driver which bus stop you should get off. Sometimes the stop it says on the monitor is different from the actual bus stop!

A view point on the top of the hill near the Sami Experience. A great way to see all of Hammerfest Below. When we were there, the summer square (Torket) was going and the square was full of food trucks.

Worth the walk, great view over Hammerfest. Sadly, no bar or restaurant - would have loved to drink or eat there.

Beautiful spot to take a look over the long but small city if Hammerfest. You can either get here by foot from the city up the hill, or by car. I slept there a night in my car in december 2018 and to wake up seeing the illuminated city and harbour, with no one around, was a wonderful experience!

Very nice experience at this place, we came with a shore excursion from a cruise ship and it was very interesting to listen to the Sami way of life and customs. We tasted some food too.

Qa spiseri, located in Hammerfest, Norway's northernmost city, offers a fresh and diverse dining experience. The town's desolate climate and surroundings make it an ideal place to witness the midnight sun from May 14th to July 29th. Hammerfest boasts an active nightlife scene with opportunities to enjoy delicious food, live music, and engaging conversations.
Nice café-style restaurant. Really enjoyed the food — had the beef with stripes and vegetables in a creamy sauce, which was excellent. Prices are about normal for Norway. Staff were friendly; they didn’t speak English, but it wasn’t an issue since they have an English menu. Overall, a great experience. 388 NOK food +drink

A cozy place with a very large menu. The food is mediocre, and prices are reasonable.

I felt bad for not finding an Indian restaurant. But I was very glad to the taste of the food here. Rullakylling is my favourite and sufficient enough to fill you with rice.

I was in Hammerfest for a business trip. Went out for dinner but clueless where to eat. Saw this place, seemed like there were many locals eating here. The menu was quite large.Ordered the fish roullade, since I was craving for rice. Took a bit a while to arrive, but was very pleased. It was worth the wait as the food was made fresh and delicious. The fish was stuffed with cheese and spinach, moist and seasoned well. The yellow rice was fluffy and flavourful. And the bed of peas and greens satistied my fiber intake. Pricewise, it was ok for 210 NOK; I'd say it is within the value for money range. Would surely recommend this place.

Good, informal restaurant with decent food. The employees had positive attitudes and were helpful. Great place for locals to meet and for tourists to enjoy a reasonable meal. There is a good menu selection that includes a variety of Norwegian specialties.
