Sisteron Citadel is a historic hilltop fortress that spans 10 hectares and has origins dating back to the 12th century. The town's survival through the Black Plague and religious wars, as well as its role in imprisoning Prince Jean-Casimir Vasa of Poland, are part of its rich history. Visitors can explore three notable museums within the citadel grounds: the Citadel Museum, Baden-Powell Scout Museum, and Musee Terre & Temps.
Very much Game of Thrones vibes, worth hiking up the hill. For families, be aware that you cannot bring a stroller up to the Citadel (lot’s of stairs). The guides are available in many different languages and the architecture is impressive. Overall it feels less touristic than you would expect. Parking around Sisteron available but will fill up quickly. Also the city itself has unfortunately not much to offer, most of the shops and restaurants wer closed (even during their official opening times).
Chris B — Google review
Quite impressive as far as the fortress itself is concerned, but on the other hand the settlement seems quite chaotic. Street closures, detours, intolerance (probably the effect of high temperatures).
Jože H — Google review
Impressive walled city with narrow rampart, church and well maintained walls and structures. Affordable tickets and long opening hours. I recommend

Walked up from carpark quite busy. Didn't actually go in, because husband won't pay! Raised eyebrows expression! But Great walk to the top and a lovely town to visit
Sarah H — Google review
Beautiful monument, breathtaking views. However, I would recommend to follow a guided tour. We didn’t take this option and regretted afterwards as we didn’t learn as much history as we wanted. The posters with information are rather few and old and some of the audio stations didn’t work at all :(
Kristina G — Google review
A beautiful piece of historical mountain, it dose presents natural beauty pictures.

Amazing! Worth everything single step and stairs you have to climb. No need to buy tickets in advance during the week. Service was excellent and very helpful.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Talk about awesomeness, this is one of it. Put on your walking/hiking shoes then work up a bit of sweat but well worth it. Entrance per adult is €7.10, which is a steal with the views that this citadel presents. “A picture speaks a thousand words”.

Notre Dame du Chateau

Notre Dame du Chateau is a historical site with a museum that recalls Napoleon's return from Elba, featuring a keep with a jail and an exhibition of horse-drawn vehicles. The 15th-century Chapel Notre-Dame du Chateau is also located here, along with temporary exhibitions. Although the citadel was closed during the visit, it is set to open on March 21st. Visitors have reported seeing vultures in the area, adding to the allure of this picturesque location.
Best Castel I've seen. I could even bring my dog😜

(Translated by Google) The Notre-Dame-du-Château is an important pilgrimage chapel in the town of Sisteron in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Located above the city on the site of the Sisteron citadel, it offers both spiritual significance and stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The chapel is located in the immediate vicinity of the Citadel of Sisteron, an imposing fortress that towers over the city. Its elevated position allows for wide panoramic views of the Durance Valley, the town of Sisteron and the surrounding mountains. The chapel can be reached via hiking trails that lead through the fortress. The origins of the chapel go back to the Middle Ages. It was built in the 12th century and has a long tradition as a place of pilgrimage. The chapel was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and played an important role in the spiritual life of the region. Over the centuries the chapel has been renovated and restored several times. The chapel is characterized by a simple but impressive Romanesque architecture, typical of religious buildings in Provence. The interior is simple but has a deep spiritual atmosphere. The chapel houses a statue of the Virgin Mary, which is particularly revered. Notre-Dame-du-Château is a popular place of pilgrimage, especially for believers who ask the Virgin Mary for protection and help. Processions and religious festivals take place here every year, especially on August 15, the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. As of: October 10, 2023 *Most people are afraid of death because they haven't done enough with their life.* (Original) Die Notre-Dame-du-Château ist eine bedeutende Wallfahrtskapelle in der Stadt Sisteron in der Region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Festival
Les Nuits De La Citadelle is a mesmerizing event that takes place in the stunning town of Sisteron, perched at an elevation of 485 meters. The old town and its citadel offer breathtaking views of the Durance River and the majestic Rocher de la Sainte-Baume. This enchanting location on the border of the Alps and Provence is bathed in the warm southern sun.

Accs Versant Nord Citadelle

Historical landmark
Nestled in the heart of Sisteron, "Accs Versant Nord Citadelle" offers a stunning approach to the historic citadel that towers over the Durance Valley. This picturesque route winds through steep rocky slopes, providing breathtaking views as you ascend. For those who prefer a more leisurely journey, there's a charming tractor service that transports visitors from the town square up to this majestic landmark.
(Translated by Google) Accès Versant Nord Citadelle refers to the access to the citadel of Sisteron from the north side. This approach is particularly picturesque and leads through the northern area of the citadel, which is located on the steep rocky outcrop. The northern entrance leads through the steep slopes of the rock on which the citadel sits. This access is more difficult than the main entrance from the city side, but it offers an impressive perspective of the fortress and the surrounding landscape. There are well-developed paths leading up from the north side of the citadel. These trails offer visitors the opportunity to experience the region's scenic beauty as they ascend to the citadel. The climb is challenging but suitable for hikers. The path on the north side offers spectacular views of the Durance Valley and the surrounding mountains. Many visitors choose this route to enjoy the views and natural beauty of the area before entering the citadel. In the past, the northern entrance to the citadel was a less used route as the fortress was mainly defended from the city side. Today it is used more as a scenic hiking trail. The northern entrance is mainly used by tourists who want to explore the citadel via an alternative route. It is also ideal for nature and history lovers who enjoy the climb as part of their visit. As of: September 10, 2023 *The people who postpone something from today to tomorrow are the same people who already postponed it from yesterday to today.* (Original) Accès Versant Nord Citadelle bezieht sich auf den Zugang zur Zitadelle von Sisteron von der Nordseite.

Art gallery
Sisteron has several art galleries but this is the best. I have visited this small gallery in Sisteron several times over the past two years and bought four engravings made by Colin and a couple of paintings by other artists during that time. The gallery sells engravings and paintings by Colin, a locally well respected artist but also stocks ceramics and paintings by other local artists. Cécile who manages the gallery is very knowledgeable about what and whose art she sells. She is very friendly, patient and never pressurises you to buy anything. Compared to the UK the prices are also very reasonable and most of the works are between 90 and 200 euros. This gallery is a real pleasure to visit!

The museum is housed in a private mansion, featuring temporary exhibitions and Gallo-Roman rooms. (Translated by Google) The Gallo-Roman museum of Sisteron is a real cultural gem that is worth the detour. Situated in a picturesque setting, this museum, although modest, offers a rich and varied experience. By exploring the basement, we discover a fascinating collection of artifacts that take us to the heart of the Gallo-Roman era. These vestiges, witnesses of a bygone era, allow us to better understand local history and connect with the ancient roots of the region. What makes this museum even more appreciable is its accessibility: entry is free, which is rare these days. This allows everyone, whether you are a history enthusiast or simply curious, to enjoy an enriching cultural break. On the ground floor, the contemporary painting exhibition provides a nice complement to the visit. It demonstrates the museum's commitment to offering a harmonious blend between past and present, history and modernity. The works on display are varied and provide an interesting artistic perspective, adding an additional dimension to the visit. In short, the Gallo-Roman museum of Sisteron is a nice cultural stop, where you can soak up history while appreciating contemporary art. It is a place where the past meets the present, in a friendly atmosphere accessible to all. At L'Akène, the culinary experience is a delightful journey through the world of crepes and galettes. Guests rave about the savory options, particularly a standout galette featuring ham, eggs, and mozzarella drizzled with garlic vinaigrette that elevates its flavor profile. The sweet offerings are equally tempting; one visitor enjoyed a decadent Chocolate Orange flambe crepe infused with Grand Marnier.
Visited twice in two days! Very hard working couple making delicious crepes and food. Tonight I had a Chocolate Orange flambe crepe with Grand Marnier and it was absolutely Delicious. If we weren't leaving tomorrow I would go again!

This would have been 1 star if not for the waiter trying his best. The place is heavily under staffed. It took 15 minutes to get a menu. We booked in advance a table outside and they tried to put us inside. Then we got the worst table outside there was. The food took ages to arrive and was just average. Dry crepes. We cancelled our dessert after 20 minutes of waiting. It's a place to avoid at all costs!
Nishan M — Google review
Unbelievably rude and/or racist. We were with friends, a quiet Turkish family of four - 2 adults and 2 children (non-French speaking) who were refused a table, which was then given to a French speaking group who turned up immediately afterwards.

Really good galettes and crepes. For the savoury galettes, I got one with jambon, eggs, and mozzarella. The game changer was the garlic vinaigrette on top ! I also had the salted caramel for sweets. Staffs were very friendly. Highly recommend to check out.

VERY BAD ATTENTION, NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE First they seated us in a table for 4 people outside because it was raining and nobody wanted that table (it was wet). 15min later the rain stopped and the owner came and told us to leave because another family had a reservation, wich wasn't true because unfortunately I understand french. I told him that it wasn't true and he said "I'm sorry I don't speak English" - another lie because he first spoke to us in English when we came -. And he finally said "I have priorities" while he was doing some gestures to the other costumers as if I was crazy. The other costumers couldn't believe what he did. So, if you value not only the food, also the good people, never go to this place. About the food, nothing to say because we had no chance to taste it (and we will never). If you want to go to a much better restaurant walk 50 meters, we finally had lunch in La Voûte, better attention and nice food!

I give it a 3 because the family team is just so sweet, because we ate everything and commented on the high quality of the ingredients, and because the price is unbeatable. The thorn in this establishment’s side is that its food is geared to a French audience (who obviously loves it), so if you’re looking for an authentic experience, this won’t be the one.

Located in the picturesque medieval village of Sisteron, La Voute is a charming restaurant with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Situated on a serene, car-free street, the restaurant features spacious terraces on either side. The staff are friendly and provide top-notch service. While some visitors found the food to be average, others praised the delicious pizza and lamb dishes. With its delightful ambiance and tasty cuisine, La Voute offers a memorable dining experience in Hautes Provence.
By far the best restaurant in Sisteron. The quality of the food and wine is exceptional. I have stayed in Sisteron for a week and I have visited La Voute 8 times! They have a beautiful range of salads as an entree of plat. The meats are excellent, I tried the entrecôte and the lamb and both were superb. At lunchtime they offer at Plat du Jours - I wouldn’t even ask what it was, just order it! Why? - because the chef buys a fresh ingredient each day and therefore it is always fresh and delicious. If you need an energy boost then the pizzas are out of this world, very fresh and cooked in an ancient iron oven. The drinks are all of a very high standard and the prices across the board are extremely good value. The family who own this bistro restaurant and their faithful staff are so helpful and friendly that I feel like I’ve made some friends there for a long time to come. I will return to Sisteron regularly and I will always eat at La Voute… no question about it

Nestled in the enchanting medieval village of Sisteron, in the heart of Hautes Provence, lies the charming restaurant, La Voûte. As you enter the village, you are greeted by a serene, car-free street adorned with a delightful array of dining establishments. At the forefront stands La Voûte, boasting a spacious terrace on either side of the street, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The first thing that catches your eye upon entering La Voûte is their extensive menu, which revolves around Italian-inspired cuisine. From a tempting selection of diverse pasta dishes to mouthwatering pizzas straight from a wood-fired oven. Additionally, their creative flair is showcased through a selection of daily specials on an inviting chalkboard. The friendly staff adds to the overall pleasant experience at La Voûte, with one member even fluently speaking Dutch, a delightful coincidence for those who might find comfort in their native language. However, it is worth mentioning that we encountered a minor hiccup during our visit. Regrettably, the charcuterie, a shared appetizer, was overlooked and not brought to our table, causing us to jump straight to our main courses. Nevertheless, the main dishes were truly delightful. The bavette, accompanied by a delectable mushroom sauce, proved to be a succulent and well-cooked choice, while the pasta with walnuts and creamy sauce offered a delectable fusion of flavors. The chocolate fondant melted in our mouths, an exquisite sensation for any chocolate lover, and the pannacotta was smooth and creamy. La Voûte is a location that epitomizes simplicity and quality. The restaurant strikes an impressive balance between offering a wide variety of delectable dishes while maintaining an excellent price-to-quality ratio.

Out of all the pizza places I’ve been to, this is one of the 3 best. Better than New York pizza. With the thin crust and the amazing cheese I don’t think you can judge this place by the looks. Overall, amazing pizza.

Pizza is good but everything else need proper improvement. The restaurant is nicely located and it’s beautiful inside, service is good but food definitely needs some work. Also wine selection was quite disappointing for a restaurant in a country of wine.

Very nice place to visit, I recommend going in the beginning of summer so it is hot and you can get in the water. The water is quite cold, but the place really beautiful with some very interesting hike areas. Parking might be limited if there a lot of people, prepare to walk a bit.

Amazing walks, met some Park Rangers, they were super friendly, the river is great to cool off in during the walk so bring a swimsuit and towel :-) Also, please don't build dams/barrages as it influences the waterflow and this is very bad for the fishes further down the stream!

Very nice! You need to go via shuttles as you may not park at site itself.

Important! Parking is not possible at all in July and August. It is illegal and the only option is to take bus from the parking at the base.

Very nice place! You can find great swimming spots and the walk around is very nice, but high so no access to water during your walk. Only when you actually cross the river.

Sad and I admit that I don't understand why a church and even more so a cathedral is closed to the public.... tourists won't have much to visit as a result.. and for believers who want and need to go and pray, they must go to Gap!! I can understand it from our little chapels in our villages but not there! Rocher de la Baume, located in Sisteron, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, is a massive rock formation that offers stunning views and exciting outdoor adventures. This majestic site is a favorite for rock climbers and has been claimed to be a place where some locals and visitors have seen visions of the Virgin Mary. The simplicity of the exterior of Saint Marcel church near the Dominican convent contrasts with its rich interior decor.
Situated opposite the Citadel we stopped here and spent a good hour wandering through the streets and lanes. The setting was lovely and very historic and it was interesting to see. 🏞️🏞️🏞️

MUST-SEE PLACE: The Rock of La Baume is a true hidden gem in Provence. As with any gem, legends say this millions-of-years-old UNESCO site hides treasures within. For the best views, stay on the opposite side of the Durance River, where there’s a good-sized car park. From there, and from the nearby viewing platforms, you get the most stunning panoramas of this natural monument. Apparently, the views at sunset in summer are breathtaking, though we couldn’t stay that long. Still, this is a place of tranquillity where time seems to slow down and you appreciate every moment. I’ll definitely plan my route through the little town of Sisteron again just to see this beauty once again.

Le Braséro is a warm and welcoming restaurant located in the heart of Sisteron, offering a variety of Italian-inspired cuisine and their famous Braserade. The menu, curated by Chef Samuel Lesassier, caters to all tastes, including meat lovers, vegetarians, and families with children. The cozy interior features an exotic decor with abundant light and wood elements. Guests can enjoy fresh homemade pasta while taking in the original view of the citadel from one of the three dining rooms.
First of all, if one is in Sisteron in Nov (or this period) one should make reservation for dinner. We stop by this town for a night on route up north, and put up in the B&B next door. We are lucky to be advised and helped by the B&B owner to make a dinner reservation. We have the rump steak and swordfish steak, and both are really great. The rump steak is excellent, as well as the baked potato that comes with the fish. Nice and cosy ambient too.

The charming Hôtel Restaurant de La Citadelle offers modest accommodations, some of which come with scenic river vistas. The on-site eatery boasts a terrace and serves delicious cuisine. I recently enjoyed a satisfying lunch there, particularly relishing the excellent tartare. The service was prompt, and the dish itself was presented in a way that allowed me to select my preferred ingredients for mixing.
This hotel restaurant has a cute terrace from which you have the best view, directly at the river and the famous rocks. There are some parking spaces behind/ in front of the hotel. The staff is very kind and helpful! We didn't stay for the night, so no rating for the rooms, but totally recommend even for short break, it's very nice :)

The review is about restaurant as I didn’t stay at hotel. We were family of 2 adults and 3 kids entering the restaurant to have a dinner. We were met by absolutely rude old guy. The table we were about to occupy happened to be reserved as well as other 5+ tables. He offered us a table for 4 and after my argument that we are actually 5 I was told that I can go and search for another chair and plates somewhere else. I suspect he doesn’t like people who don’t speak French. As he served others (French speakers) absolutely differently
Yevgeniy S — Google review
I believe we got a great rate for this location and service. Rooms are decently sized. Great views! (I think that is what you mostly pay for) Beware! Parking is subject to availability. And there is only a public parking in front of hotel. Not very handy. Restaurant was good. We had good service and enjoyed the scenic atmosphere.
Lou-Rika P — Google review
The hotel has a nice building from the outside and is located in a good area, but once inside it doesn’t feel professionally managed—more like a small family-run place. Unfortunately, there were a lot of flies in the dining room and bar, which made the atmosphere unpleasant. Another big downside is the strong presence of cigarette smoke that you can feel almost everywhere inside. The property would really benefit from proper maintenance and some repairs to make it more inviting. Without these improvements, it’s hard to feel like coming back or recommending this hotel to others.
Aki K — Google review
The dirtiest room I have ever stayed in.
The moment we entered, there was a strong smell of mold. Black mold was all over the walls and in the bathroom. The room was extremely dirty — with random dead bugs in the corners and someone else’s body hairs left around. Absolutely do not recommend staying here. The only positive was the staff — although they didn’t speak English, they were polite and gave us a different room when we asked. Unfortunately, the new room wasn’t any better.
Irene K — Google review
Service was top. Was struggling to find a hotel last minute, but the website said to call and ask for last minute cancellation. We called and got a room. They didn't ask for payment details for the booking, so we were abit concerned whether it will be honoured. We called again the morning we were arriving to confirm and it was all good. Room was really basic. Bed was abit soft but we had a good rest. Location was top. That said, the village is super small, so everywhere is walking distance.
