Beaumont-Hamel in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Beaumont-Hamel, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Beaumont-Hamel is one of the most evocative World War I sites on the Somme, best known for the Newfoundland Memorial Park with its preserved front-line trenches and shell-scarred landscape. The park honors the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s devastating losses on July 1, 1916, and offers clear interpretation of the Battle of the Somme. Marked walking paths, cemeteries, and viewpoints help visitors understand the scale of the fighting and pay their respects in a quiet, rural setting. Nearby villages and other Somme memorials make it easy to include Beaumont-Hamel in a broader remembrance-focused itinerary.
With favorites like Newfoundland Park Visitors Centre, La Signy Farm, and Sunken Lane, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees.0 To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Historic Sites
At the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, visitors can walk through the original grass green trenches of war and experience the terror and loss endured by brave soldiers. The memorial also includes a visit to the Sir John Monash Center and the impressive Lochnagar mine crater. Additionally, visitors pay their respects at other significant sites such as Pozieres, Villers-Bretonneux, and the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
Here you can actually experience the trenches on both sides. I highly recommend using the tour guides available. There is a lot of info, Ali’s a lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes. Expect to spend at least 90 min here.

Thank you to the Canadian Government for ensuring this monument to those who gave their all stays open and allows us to be reminded of the horrors of war. Kept amazingly, the grounds are pristine where they need to be, and the trenches are kept in a manner that allows us to see their original layout, and understand how small no man's land really was - just a couple of hundred metres. The staff are fantastic and the visitor centre gives further insight. Thank you to those from Newfoundland that remain here to this day.

This was a beautiful memorial with the remains of trenches, no man's land and cemetary. There is a free tour available with a Canadian guide to explain the significance of the site. The caribou memorial is very distinctive
Vicki E — Google review
A very moving place with an incredible history of loss. Scarred earth is still visible where the trenches were dug and collapsed. A beautiful memorial to men who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their countries.

The battle site and museum are excellently kept and very evocative, sad and interesting. The young people who are volunteers there are a cheerful credit to their nation, even if they can't distinguish an Australian accent from an English one😆

Excellent place to visit so peaceful now but was hell in the war really great memorial

Very moving. beautiful place . Just wish there were somewhere we could have got a drink as it was a long drive and a hot day.

Humbling experience. Free tour guides are available and recommended. They provided indept knowledge of the July 1st massacre of allied forces including a significant high number of Nfld troops wiping out most of the Nfld regiment assigned there.

Newfoundland Park Visitors Centre

Visitor center
The Newfoundland Park Visitors Centre is a well-maintained memorial dedicated to the fallen Canadians who fought in the First World War. The center, which belongs to the Government of Canada, offers free admission and provides insight into the battles that occurred in Beaumont Hamel. The staff, comprised of Canadian university students working for the commonwealth, are friendly and knowledgeable. Visitors can explore souvenirs and access restroom facilities at this small museum.
The operation of this memorial is just outstanding, starting with the friendly welcome on arrival and suggestions how to get the best from the visit. The whole site is beautifully kept and really makes you think. The exhibitions in the low key visitor centre are well chosen, loos are clean, parking is easy. A big thank you to the Newfoundlanders for what they did in 1918, and to the Canadians for designing and running such a brilliant memorial.
Nigel B — Google review
Wonderful historical site highlighting the sacrifices of Newfoundland soldiers during the First World War. Pascale, who was one of the staff was very helpful and nice. We had a wonderful visit. Thank you!
Susan R — Google review
It was nice going to the park and seeing how locals are living. The park is pretty big, free parking, toilets, you can go inside of the building to see ww1 items and read more about people and know more about the war. Staff speak English really well. There's also a book where people can put their country, name and an opinion with a signature which is a pretty cool small touch
Ignas — Google review
Visited several times and always leaves me without words at what when on here all those years ago. The tour guides are terrific, all Canadian volunteers and the visitors centre is a must.

A very well organised memorial to the Newfoundland soldiers that took part in the Great War. I'd recommend signing up for the free guide around the Memorial Park given by Canadian students . It's very interesting. There's a small shop, toilets and museum in the visitors centre. Definitely recommend a visit here.

Monument
The 51st (Highland) Division Memorial, located near Hunters Cemetery at the rear of the park, is an impressive structure made of rough blocks of Rubislaw granite assembled in a pyramid form. It holds historical significance as it was seized by the 51st division on November 13, 1916. The memorial serves as a continuing reminder of the thousands who lost their lives in World War I and has strong links to Scottish soldiers.

Hawthorn Ridge Crater is a significant site near Newfoundland Memorial Park, formed by the explosion of two mines during the Battle of the Somme. It holds historical importance as it was one of 17 German fortifications undermined that morning. Visiting this impressive crater offers a poignant experience, with reminders of the war all around, including old trenches and numerous cemeteries and war memorials. The area's respectful atmosphere is enhanced by beautiful scattered poppies.
Blown up at the 1st july 1916, fought over for the rest of the day Bombed and blown up a second time at november 13th and captured Recaptuerd by the germans in march 1918 Bombed from april to august 1918 Recaptured in august 1918 Very interesting site

Awesome if you are interested in the Great War, WW1. Together with the story of the Sunken Lane.

First time I'd visited since it's upkeep had been taken over by a charitable trust. It's been beautifully cleaned up and all the dumped rubbish removed. Absolutely silent on a Wednesday morning apart from a few chirping birds. A true Blackadder 4 moment.

The Hawthorn Ridge Crater is an absolute must whether the avid history buff or casual tourist to the Somme Battlefield. Situated on the highest point of Hawthorn Ridge with commanding views of the Sunken Lane, Beaumont Hamel miltary cemetery. The Canadian/Newfoundland memorial Park is also just a short distance away. To the memory of the fallen Lest we forget ❤️ 🌹

We were staying at an Airbnb in Auchenvillers with our children whilst travelling through France, not our first trip to the Somme, we walked up to Hawthorn ridge, it was very sad and moving, there are reminders of the war everywhere around, old trenches that aren't ploughed and an unbelievable amount of cemeteries and war memorials, just so, so sad and a good lesson in humanity and empathy for the children. The poppies scattered around the fields are beautiful and add to the respectful feeling of the area.
Elizabeth M — Google review
Awe inspiring just walking round the crater. We had a guide with us who was able to explain in detail the events that took place.

Very worth the visit although it is overgrown. There is very little information there but there are QR codes so that you can download a guide. Opposite is a British cemetery.

This is a very moving and important piece of the story of WW1. Easy to access and very well preserved, surrounded by memorials and cemeteries from WW1. A must see.

Sunken Lane is a significant site for anyone interested in the Battle of the Somme. It's where the Lancashire Fusiliers went over the top, famously captured on film by Geoffrey Malins. The lane holds historical importance as it was a trench during World War I. Visitors are encouraged to also visit Hawthorn Ridge craters across the road to fully comprehend the events that transpired there.
A touching place if you've seen the 1916 video and know what happened here.

WW1 battlefield. It is an essential place to visit with regard to the Somme battlefield. Geoffrey Malin filmed this place and it is readily available to see on YouTube and other platforms. Very moving. Hawthorn crater is within walking distance. Well worth visiting as well.

If you’re a history lover it’s nice to see for a comparison otherwise it’s just a farm road. You can park here and walk to the cemetery as well as the hawthorn hill crater across the road
