Robin Hoods Bay in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Robin Hoods Bay, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Robin Hood’s Bay is a striking old fishing village where steep cobbled lanes wind down to a broad, tidal beach backed by dramatic cliffs. It’s popular for coastal walks along the Cleveland Way and for exploring rock pools and fossils on the shoreline. The village itself offers traditional pubs, small galleries and independent shops housed in centuries‑old cottages. Its setting within the North York Moors National Park also makes it a good base for visiting nearby Whitby and the surrounding moorland.
With favorites like Yorkshire Coast Dinosaur and Fossil Museum, The Old Coastguard Station, and Wayfarer Guest House, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Brambles Bistro and Smugglers Ale House so you can get the best taste of Robin Hoods Bay while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Beaches
Robin Hood's Bay and Beach is a picturesque destination located in Yorkshire, offering a sweeping section of dog-friendly beach where pets can roam freely year-round. The area boasts stunning views and a beautiful backdrop of North York Moors cliffs. Visitors can enjoy activities such as dipping their toes in the sea, exploring rock pools with children, or taking leisurely walks along the sand. The village itself is bustling with charming shops, restaurants, pubs, and B&Bs.
Its timeless beauty explains its endearing popularity. However to become part of it all you must go down a very steep road (but never in your car) then depending on the tide walk along the beach or through the market woodland footpath perhaps to Boggle Hole. Don't forget at some point you must walk back up that very very steep hill. Nevertheless It's worth the effort.
Peter S — Google review
A small, beautiful fishing village just south of Whitby with a pub, hotel restaurants and cafes. The approach to the village is very steep and there is no parking, other than at the top of the bay from which you must walk down. We stayed for a week in the village and the cottage came with parking but it’s quite tricky to navigate, especially if there’s something coming the other way as the road is a narrow, single lane. When we first arrived, I had to reverse part way back up the steep road to let a van out - not for the faint-hearted. From here you can easily access some stunning coastal walks and explore some of the nearby towns such as Whitby and Staithes. If you fancy a beer after a walk, I recommend the Laurel which does a great pint of Timothy Taylor.
Garrie F — Google review
It is a truly delightful village, perfect for a visit, with opportunities to enjoy scenic walks and explore the beach. There are charming shops to browse and a variety of coffee shops where one can relax. Furthermore, the area boasts beautiful cottages to admire, and for those who appreciate a refreshing beer, there are several inviting pubs offering drinks and meals.
Michael B — Google review
Lovely little seaside town. Very steep hill down through the old village to the beach. Pub, cafe and a few small shops. Very picturesque and a fairly long beach where if you are lucky you might discover some fossils. Plenty of parking at the top, however it does get busy, so arrive early in the day.
Steve G — Google review
A really nice village by the sea with an array of shops, the top car park was busy but we're on motorbikes so managed to squeeze in... There is a steep slope down to the bay but it's very picturesque with sea cliffs and old buildings, the chip shop part way down was nice, it was also reasonably priced, and grabbed an ice cream down near the sea, there were also a few gift shops, etc. but didn't go in those. The tide was in however there is a nice area over some steps where you can see the bay. If your infirm it wouldn't be ideal however.
Gary S — Google review
What an amazing, awesome place to visit. There's not much to do because Robin Hoods Bay isn't that big. There's your normal little gift shops where you can pick up a bucket and spade for the kids. The beach is beautiful, but mostly rockie so be careful they are slippery ( that's if the tide is out). Some nice places to sit and take in the spectacular views and rest your feet ready for the walk back up the extremely steep hill!!... Not many places to eat and the fish and chip shop at the top of the bank stops serving at 7.45pm. There's two public car parks the one closest to the town isn't massive and fills up quite quickly, the other one is only a short walk away so isn't to bad. The walk into Robin Hoods Bay is really steep so anyone with mobility issues might struggle because it's even harder coming back up and there's no public transport. It's well worth a visit and you won't be disappointed but you can't make a full day out of it, there's just not enough to do unless you spend all day beach combing. Saying that, we're returning next year with our two grandchildren who will love it
Gill B — Google review
Our favourite place to stay, no cars - just old winding allies, tea shops and plenty of beach walking with a spectacular dawn - provided you get up at 05.30. Great for the dog to run and run.
Paul B — Google review
Fantastic beach and town. Ideal for rock pooling, fossil hunting. Wilik picking. Or just even chilling on the beach doing regular activities building sand castles or sunbathing. Some great places to visit museums. Quirky gift shops and a fossil shop also jewellery made with Whitby jet amongst other items. We have been a few times now. Would definitely be going back when in the area.

The National Trust - The Old Coastguard Station is a captivating site situated on the Robin Hoods Bay slipway. It has been transformed into an exhibition space showcasing marine life, featuring interactive models and a special seawater tank with rockpool creatures. The location offers stunning views and is conveniently accessible from the village, with nearby amenities such as shops, bars, and restaurants. Visitors can also enjoy pastries and coffee at the on-site cafe while taking in the picturesque sea view from the sea wall.
Upstairs you can find a really lovely interactive one room museum. I definitely recommend checking it out. There is no entry fee. If you enjoy the museum the can support it by having a drink or meal in the café downstairs or donate some money to the staff.

Good place to stop for a coffee fight on the sea wall. Plenty if history. The loft is let it by the national Trust and is a great base for exploring the area in just to relax and enjoy the view

Today, whilst it was pouring we were welcomed in the Old Coastguard building. Our dog was allowed in, the coffee and scones were delicious. Plenty of very friendly staff gave us a homely feeling during our stay here.

Perfect for a brew with a view! A little pricey but also the best place to just sit and watch the waves roll in. Dog friendly, lovely helpful service, always like to pop in if I need to do a bit of work (no WiFi but if you can get signal you can hotspot).

Visited here after hearing good things about it, can't believe this is the same place we found it nothing special expensive carpark £4.40 for 2hours for what a steep hill couple of shops a bay you could find anywhere in this wonderful country of ours, we must also have gone on a everyone is in a rude and unfriendly mood day especially the tea shop at the bottom of the hill it costs nothing to be friendly and polite. Won't return wouldn't recommend

The Yorkshire Coast Dinosaur and Fossil Museum is a popular stop for dinosaur enthusiasts, offering a variety of fossils and replica dinosaur skeletons for purchase. Visitors can find affordable crystals and a large selection of rocks, making it an ideal destination for rock collectors. The friendly staff are always ready to assist, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.
Such a fantastic shop with museum. We've bought several fossils and gem stones to expand our collection. Lovely place.
Mayako J — Google review
Fun to look around, also sell crystals and books Look UP !! when in the shop 🦕🦖
Country D — Google review
Museum??? Quite a stretch to call this a museum. Nothing more than a shop selling fossil replicas, rocks, crystals, minerals & gemstones.
Adrian J — Google review
The name is quite misleading. This is a shop and not a museum. Was very crowded when we visited. Entering the store with a backpack was nearly impossible, so we went after each other. The shop has a similar offer as the other fossil shops in Scarborough and Whitby. Worth a quick visit if in Robin Hood's Bay but not recommend to be the main purpose of visiting the town, since as mentioned it is not a museum.
Brynja K — Google review
Bought a fossil here for £18. Later saw a similar sized fossil at a shop elsewhere for like half the price. What a rip off. Also I don't know why it's called a museum, it's a small shop where the only staff is some teen behind a till and all the fossils have price tags.
A U — Google review
Great place! Most affordable crystals I've ever seen and good quality too! The place was, for good reason, very busy so I can see why the staff would have a lot to deal with but they were still all lovely?
Annie O — Google review
Drove 2 hours to go to Whitby & this was on the list so decided to come here first on the way. Needn't have bothered as it was shut, on a Friday, in the half term holidays. There's no website. No number. No social media. No posted hours on Google. So disappointed.
Adele T — Google review
It is an amazing fossil shop - have gone every year for the past few years and every year have come out with a new fossil or shiny gemstone. Highly recommend going there for better prices for better fossils. Very friendly staff always ready to help out where they can

Nestled in the heart of Robin Hood's Bay, the museum offers a glimpse into the area's rich history and natural heritage. Run by local volunteers, this compact yet informative museum showcases exhibits on fishing, shipping, geology, and local history. Visitors can explore displays on cliff erosion, smuggling, ships in bottles, shipwrecks, coastal life, and more. The quaint village with its winding streets and seasonal shops adds to the charm of this picturesque seaside destination.
A wonderfully thoughtful community-funded museum! The interpretive signs and models are incredibly clear and easy to understand.

Such a cool little find tucked away.a bit like Dr Who's Tardis, small looking but cramed with so much information. Ran by volunteers, it's deserving of support as it's free entry but you can make a donation.

Absolutely gorgeous. We went on a March Sunday morning. Weather was cloudy but still lovely to walk around. We stopped for coffee and cake. It was quiet with a few people out walking their dogs. It was oldy worldy picturesque and nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of some larger seaside places. However I can think that it is busy during the sunny and summer periods.
Loubee S — Google review
A great example of a small quirky British museum. Loads of interesting displays, one showing where sunken U-boats are out in the bay. Part of it was a mortuary where drowned sailors were brought- shows the harsh and dangerous lives they had.
Brian L — Google review
A well deserved 5 ⭐ This is fantastic, so steeped in history and fine tradition, all run by volunteers You an spend a good while reading looking and learning We shall revisit next time

Very interesting small museum on Robin Hoods Bay beachfront. You can buy fossils from the area and find local information about the fossils on those beaches. Robin Hoods Bay is a quaint little seaside place but it's incredibly steep. You really need to be fairly fit and I'm not sure about wheelchairs. There are buses from whitby I think hourly.

Lovely, quirky village with it's warren-like streets, seasonal shops (not many open in early March when we visited, hence 4⭐) and gorgeous vast beach. Rockpools, geology and glorious fresh air. It's VERY steep with lots of steps and hills, bring your walking legs with you!

Fish and chips takeaway
I frequently visit Fish Box - Robin Hoods Bay and it never fails to impress with its satisfying food and beverages. On my recent visit, I indulged in their fish and chips dish accompanied by a carton of gravy. The fish was impeccably cooked, retaining its freshness. They served the drinks, including a Latte and tea, in disposable cups while the food came in convenient trays.
Really tasty homemade fish cakes! Chips also fab. Only complaint is that the curry sauce wasn't the most tasty I've ever had but still enjoyed the overall meal. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and incredible views.

Best fish and chips we ever had! COD was so fresh and juicy, cooked to order. Great seating and with toilet facility and baby change table too. Lady behind cook really good fish to perfection! Will come back all the way just for this fish and chip
Leon T — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Decent Food, Great Location We recently ordered from Fishbox — two fish (Scampi and Haddock), one fish cake, and a portion of fries. The Scampi was tasty and cooked well, definitely the highlight of the meal. However, the Haddock didn’t quite meet expectations. It was supposed to be grilled, but it lacked that distinct grilled flavor — no char or smoky taste. It could’ve used a bit more seasoning or even a mild spicy kick to make it more enjoyable. The fish cake and fries were average — nothing special but not bad either. Where Fishbox really shines is the location — absolutely top-notch! The setting and atmosphere were perfect, so I’d give a solid 5 stars for the location. Overall, the food was okay — not amazing, but not terrible either. A 3-star experience for the food, but I might come back just for the view and the Scampi!
Jv T — Google review
Avoid this place. If you walk by it, you'll find better nice little cafes down the hill in the village, or far better at the hotel just up the hill. We had multiple fish and chips, scampi and a grilled fish. The grilled fish was coated in a residue like they'd just peeled the batter off a fried fish, the scampi were still half frozen and the fish clearly wasn't fresh and covered in far too much better. The price is far too high for what it is, and clearly relies on the high number of tourists and the convenience. I hope you fewer people fall for their nonsense and cause them to hand the place over to somebody who has interest to make nice food and give a nice atmosphere.
Maxim C — Google review
Lovely fish and chip shop with indoor and outdoor seating good choice of food and drinks. I got a jumbo sausage and chips and gravy and the chips were great and a perfect location by the top of the hill to the bay! Would recommend before or after a visit to the beach
Megan A — Google review
Way more food than I needed. It was rather expensive in the end. I had to pay £2.90 to park for an hour. Run to the fish box...placed my order for fish chips mushy peas and tartar sauce. Which was over £16. Gutted I couldn't finish it. Seriously would be a share portion. The view is lovely but is very popular as you can imagine.

Pirate Ship Playground, located at the top of the village, offers stunning views and a range of play equipment including a pirate ship, swings, and climbing frames. The park is perfect for kids aged 1.5 to 10 and provides a lovely sea view for parents to enjoy while their children play. It is well-maintained by volunteers and features public toilets nearby. Visitors can also contribute to its upkeep through a donation box on site.
Lovely playground with the sea view. Few beaches for parents to watch kids play. Close to the public toilets (£0.20 charge). My son played there for couple of hours!

Big range of play equipment, in a small park, tucked nicely at the top of the hill. Great to entertain the kids if they’ve had enough of the quirky shops in Robin Hoods Bay or as a reward for making it back up the bank.

We visited this playpark in autumn 2022. My husband and myself still talk about how amazing the views from this playpark are. The only thing missing was a good coffee shop next door as I would have gladly stayed all day. It was also perfect for our kids who were 1.5 and almost 4 at the time.

Fantastic play area for kids, but spoiled by the fact that due to the weather it was one large muddy bog. Could do with making all of the surface 'all weather' as the climbing frame/ship weren't accessible due to the sheer volume of mud.

10/10 in every way. The owners & staff were warm & welcoming, making us feel like special guests. Our room was perfectly clean with a surprising amount of storage space! The view from our room was of The Bay which was simply beautiful. The breakfast choice was amazing - full English, American pancakes cereals & even smoked kippers! The quality of the food was second to none. Their home-made hash browns were exquisite so always make sure you order them! I cannot make a single fault with our stay & would like thank Heather & her family & staff for a perfect stay! ♥️♥️♥️

Highly recommended. Lovely B&B with fantastic views overlooking the bay. Phil, Heather and Jo certainly made our stay memorable and we will definitely be booking in at Raven House again. Warm and welcoming, super breakfast that really sets you up for the day, the welcome tray in the bedroom contains everything you need - the best bit for me was the decent sized cups to make a brew when you wake up. Stayed in November 2019. Heather who runs Raven House is super sweet and helpful. She was great to talk to about Robin Hood's Bay and full of good recommendations. Phil cooks up a delicious full English Breakfast. My only regret was that I was too hungover to eat breakfast my final morning there. What a magical and charming place. The view from Raven House down to the Village and beach can't be beat. My friend and I each took a bath which was so luxurious to warm up after walking in the chilly rain. I cannot recommend this BnB enough and I truly hope I can return!

A fabulous evening. This was our second time here (last time May 2023) while holidaying in the area. This visit was for my birthday. From the moment we walked in the staff were just lovely and we had a laugh with them too which we love. We both had the sharing special board of Nachos, Château Briand, a lovely bottle of Rosé wine, and some cheesecake shared. Absolutely delicious! The staff sang happy birthday to me as well which topped the night. Thank you guys, we will be back next time we are in the area.

I had the fish and fries which were utterly beautiful!!! The batter was different to other places, but equally as sumptuous! My partner had the surf and turf special with sliced steak and proper batteres scampi which were heavenly. My partner had a local Bay pale ale, and I had a Black Sheep cider, both of which were lovely. The place, atmosphere, and staff were delightful! Highly recommend!!

Having a meal in Brambles Bistro is one of the best experience I had when visiting the Durham moor coast. Since I didn't feel eating something fancy, I ordered the good'ole fish'n chips and it came out to be one of the best fish I had throughout my whole journey. Also the interior designs fit the bay vibe so well and the staffs are extremely nice. (Shh 🤫 Don't tell them but I think the staffs are all so cute (/// 0 w 0///))

Excellent food excellent staff and a wonderful setting, not much more you could say. We had the Nachos with pulled beef and the Calamari to start, followed by what can only be described as the best chateaubriand either of us as ever had, it just melted in your mouth you could of eaten it with a plastic spoon. The Forge Stout in particular is a delight, it’s hands down better than Guinness or Murphy’s by a country mile! The pizza’s and fries (we had the tiger fries) are delicious and really topped off our experience at this first class establishment. We will 100% be back next time we visit Robin Hoods Bay as it’s simply wonderful! It’s a must if you’re visiting.

Stopped by the smugglers inn pub today as I had seen it on a YouTube video and the pizza looked good, walked in to be greeted by friendly staff, got our drinks and ordered our pizza and a short while later our pizza was bought out to us. It was one of the best pizza's I've had and my partner agreed it was lovely too! Highly recommend stopping by if you can!!!

After finishing the seven bloody mile walk from Whitby, arriving at Robin Hood’s Bay felt like reaching the end of a hero’s journey. I wandered into the village around twilight (8:30ish), weary but buzzing and when I saw someone with a pizza box, I had to ask where it came from. They pointed me toward Smugglers, and I’m so glad they did. The place had a cozy, inviting vibe, everyone seemed to be ordering pizza, and for good reason. Later that night in my hostel, someone else recommended it too, which just confirmed it’s the go-to food spot in Robin Hood’s Bay. Now, the pizza... honestly, one of the best I’ve ever had. I’ve travelled a fair bit around the world chasing good pizza, so that’s saying something. Incredibly fresh ingredients, perfectly crisp toppings, you could tell they cared about quality. It hit the spot after a long day on foot. The guys working the front were top-notch, super friendly, welcoming, and made me feel right at home. One of those rare places you’d happily travel hours to return to. Just a heads up: last orders are at 9PM, so don’t rock up too late!

Love this quirky place. Great pizza, or just stopping by for a drink. Cozy interior, always see something new in there, dog friendly. As a frequent solo traveller I never feel uncomfortable about going in on my own.

Seems like a place set up to fleece the tourists knowing that few will return whether good or not. Charged over £13 for one pint and one medium wine. Could be really good but seemed to be catering for a few locals and fleecing anyone who wasn't a local.

Great little pub. Very quirky and old but in a nice nostalgic way! Different ales and beers on! They also have an upstairs bar and seating area too. Had a young live band on which was good! Very friendly atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit. Try the Irish stout. Would recommend! 😍

Stayed here at the end of my coast to coast walk in Robin Hood Bay, England. The service is quite remarkable, and the breakfast was the very best omelet I’ve ever had This is a place I wish I could’ve stayed longer at. There are other restaurants really close by for lunch and dinner.

Perfect! Neil and Michelle were so welcoming, generous and hospitable, the room (4) was big, warm and had a massive really comfy bed. The shower was great. The breakfast was yummy and done very professionally. Just a note that it’s not a bistro now- just a brilliant B and B!

The best place to stay. The hosts are unbelievably helpful, friendly and accommodating. We kept noticing little things that should how much thought and effort had gone into the preparation for the rooms. It was comfy, aesthetically pleasing, modern. The breakfast was wonderful. The location great. I would definitely both return and recommend.
