Historic Sites
Lavenham Guildhall, also known as the Guildhall of Corpus Christi, is a stunning timber-framed building dating back to around 1530. It was once a meeting place for medieval guilds and now operates as a National Trust site. The town of Lavenham was prosperous during the early 16th century but saw a decline in its wool industry towards the end of the century due to various factors.
I recently visited Lavenham Hall, a National Trust property, and it was a fascinating experience. The hall, which is over 400 years old, is steeped in history and filled with a wide array of artefacts. Walking through the building, you can see various equipment from the past centuries, as it once served as a prison. This unique aspect adds a layer of intrigue to the visit. The hall itself is beautifully preserved, and the historical significance is palpable in every room. After exploring, I enjoyed a delightful break at the on-site café. The food and drinks were excellent, making it a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the visit. Overall, Lavenham Hall is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in exploring a well-preserved piece of the past. Highly recommended!

Fascinating Tudor building now housing museum showing history of this town which thrived on the woollen industry in Suffolk. The town still has an array of beautiful classic Tudor houses.

The most magical place I've been to. If you like your history this is the place for you. I just love how they have preserved so many places around here. The biggest bonus is that they are truly proud of being a British town who celebrate their country. Which is unfortunately becoming so very rare thanks to Starmer. What a wonderful place.

An interesting and informative place to visit giving a real sense of its history and its place in history. There is plenty to see, (the cellar is closed at the moment due to flooding), with lots of information boards explaining all the various rooms and their uses in days gone by. It is maybe not for younger children. The staff are helpful and friendly, the cafe is nice and serves hot and cold snacks and the usual selection of hot and cold beverages, again the staff are really nice. Toilets are fresh and clean, there is plenty of parking around the village just a short walk from the building.

The Guildhall was a very unique and interesting building full of quirky facts and features. Tom was an exceptional guide and truly brought the building to life, filling us in with loads of interesting facts and my partner and I both learnt a lot. Also, it's only a short drive to Melford Hall, another National Trust property, so you can tick off both in one day. Be sure to wander Lavenham as well, lots of very old unique buildings.
Time A — Google review
Wonderful displays and very informative. A real insight into the lives of the many people who have used this beautiful old building over the years. Great tea room, beautiful gardens and a nice little bookshop.
Robert G — Google review
An interesting venue, well worth a visit. It details the history of Lavenham in general and the lives of the owners of the building in particular.
Paul E — Google review
Great afternoon spent here. Good place to come when weather is foul. Has a bookshop and tearoom within the same building. Toilets are also here. Especially impressed with staff who were happy to inform us of the local history of the building and characters associated with it, a very good rapour with us. A surprising variety of artefacts found in each room, images taken. Was particularly interested in the train information associated with Lavenham and surrounding area. Great place to take pictures of such interesting things. The small tearoom is located to the left of the building and you can eat in or out. Do take time to look at the tearoom gardens as a nice place to sit and eat in. Have included some images of the gardens. Yes definitely a place l will revisit again. As regards parking there is some street parking, but it is a popular location and is often busy with tourists. Small car park can also be found further down the road. Guess what it is actually free!!! Well done for NOT cashing in on your visitors Lavenham.

Nestled in the heart of Lavenham, the Little Hall Museum is a captivating 14th-century timber-framed house that showcases the rich history of this charming village. Once owned by the affluent Causton family, who thrived during the wool trade, this historic gem has been lovingly restored since its derelict days in 1920.
Love everything about this place. Staff and volunteers were super friendly and passionate about the places. Robin was very informative and passionate about communicating the history of Lavenham and little hall and answered all my questions in detail. The place is well laid out and structured and very authentic. The gardens is also lovely. Just £6 for entry and you're transported into a whole new world. Lovely place

Very interesting visit to Little Hall House in Lavenham, the history was well explained and clear. Very beautiful small garden, well tended and looked after.
Hazel S — Google review
I absolutely adored this place! First up you get a fairly comprehensive story of the history of the building from one of the volunteers, which is pretty essential as it builds a real picture of why it is like it is. The story and layered history of its historical uses is fascinating and the building is very beautiful, with some of Gayer Anderson's art collection from around the world. The garden is also beautiful. The smokey smell of the wooden beams upstairs is wonderful. Thanks to all the volunteers who keep this beauty open 7 days a week! £6 for a year's access to this place is great value. A very special place.
Philip J — Google review
The Little Hall in Lavenham is a minute's walk away from the famous Guildhall in the Market Square. It is run by volunteers and is both an incredible old building and an eclectic mix of curious from the Middle East, collected by two brothers before the decline of the Empire. We had a passionate introduction to the building and its history from one of the volunteer ladies and were then free to explore on our own. The rooms are generally small but they have plenty of items in them and a board in each room details the history, if known. The house itself shouldn't be neglected as over it's life it went from a prosperous merchant home to being split into 6 dwellings for the poor and then finally being united in a single home again in the 1920's. There is a pretty garden at the back too and a small knot garden. I'm not sure on the colouring of the building exterior but it does stand out!

Fascinating and remarkable history, in an exceptionally old and historic property. Undergoing some improvements and creative input to give it the greater attention it deserves, definitely go see. There's a fascinating link with the British Museum and Fitzwilliam Museum, but discover it for yourselves;)

The Parlour Lavenham is an ideal destination to escape the scorching temperatures. This charming establishment offers a delightful array of frozen treats, such as mango lime sorbet and raspberry/chocolate ice-cream, which are both exquisite. The menu is uncomplicated yet bursting with incredible flavors. In addition to their delectable ice cream, this café also provides exceptional customer service.
Hands down, one of the best hot chocolates I’ve ever had! The chocolate orange marshmallows on the side were the perfect touch. The service was incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy and laid-back. Highly recommend!

While visiting Lavenham I popped in here for a Takeaway coffee, it serves a well known artisan coffee roasters for its coffee and it did not disappoint. Included at the time of writing was a chocolate 2p piece, I thought that was a nice touch. It sells Pump street chocolate which is well regarded on a side note.

A MUST TRY when stopping in Lavenham. Visited the village to go to the Guildhall and stopped in while walking on High St. We didn’t expect to find such an incredible ice cream shop! ‘Delicious’ doesn’t adequately describe this ice cream. Got the salted caramel, which was thick, velvety, rich, and had a wonderful flavor. Very affordable too. Will be back for sure!
C S — Google review
Ice cream was amazing. We tried quite a few different flavours and they all were rich in flavour, creamy and the cone was filled til the bottom, which often doesn’t happen. Very clean, cute shop and delicious ice cream.
Inese — Google review
The best ice cream I’ve had in a while. Gooseberry and Elderberry was a great flavour and lovely texture but the damson was my absolute favourite. Nice to have waffle cones too.
Hazel B — Google review
Popped in while visiting the area and grabbed an ice cream. I shouldn't really even eat dairy but the flavours were amazing and I didn't get the usual reaction I've had from store bought ice cream, so this place comes highly recommended!
Rob D — Google review
Lovely welcome and lovely patience when serving. 3 generations, orders changing as we went as so much great and different flavours. Eg. I had Damson flavour. Nice touch of free chilled infused water on the counter to help yourself, and Aircon taking the heat out of the store.

Our dinner for 5 on a Saturday night was outstanding. The food was perfectly balanced and the service from Jamie was excellent. They went out of their way to accommodate the dairy intolerance of one of our party and overall created a really comfortable and memorable dining experience.

Wow, this hotel definitely lived up to all expectations and more. We stayed here for my husband's special Birthda., We booked the Rolls Royce pick up and Gavin picked us promptly and we felt very spoiled on our journey to The Great House. Yann greeted us very warmly on our arrival and showed us to our amazing room; number 3. The decoration and attention detail are superb. Nothing is too much trouble at this Hotel, we met Jamie later on in evening, who I liaised with previously to help me plan our trip. All the staff are extremely professional, friendly and kind. Thank you to you all for making our trip perfect.

Tops. Lovely location, exquisitely finished with a great team who made us feel valued and ensured we enjoyed our stay. The chef was so helpful with dietary requirements (celiac and onion family)
Craig S — Google review
Dreadful disinterested unfriendly service from the barman, 3 generations popped in after viewing the vintage cars in the square and wanting to book a table for Sunday lunch, the door was invitingly open and it is very hot! Checked space out the back, as intended to get out of the sun ☀️ have a drink and sit down, plenty of space. The barman was obviously struggling to cope (in his head as no customers appeared in a rush and at most 2 in the queue), although there was no reason to be, no customers were giving any hassle. I was told that "there are lots of coffee shop in the village" we ordered a Mango juice, 2 pints orange and lemonade 🍋 and a coffee latte; alot of establishments provide a biscuit or piece of shortbread etc with a morning coffee drink. I.e. the hotel at ickworth give a proper piece of shortbread with a morning coffee. So I asked if they did anything like that, I was informed that: "there is a bakers across the road and you can't get something there but you can't bring it back here!" I feel sorry if you are a resident if there's zero option to have a nice biscuit or cake? with your coffee ☕. The chap who served me was a sweaty bloke with a strange partially shaved head and long hair on top. A lovely male colleague (with french? accent) apologised on his behalf. Shame the barman struggles to cope. Before I said anything in reply our exchange concluded by him thrusting the card machine in my direction saying nothing, no "anything else?", or "paying by card or cash?" or even "sorry for the wait" or "wow it's hot today, sorry if I appear hassled, it's the heat". At this point I said to him, "you didn't really want us to come in here did you?", no apologies, just rude reply. Definitely we all know that in this business front of house is a most important skill, he had no idea that we were wanting to book a table for Sunday lunch and thought we would get a drink at the same time. Well, we didn't bother to book, he was far too busy to enter into any conversation, even when no-one was waiting to be served after me!

I have had the privilege to host two wine dinners in 2024 and 2025, and Château Lestrille and the Great House have teamed up to produce an own label Bordeaux rosé which looks and tastes amazing! Guests can indulge in exquisite dining experiences and unwind at the spa, which is housed in a sleek modern extension.
WOW! The Swan is incredible & our wedding reception was PERFECT! All of our guests commented on how fantastic the venue is & we had lots of guests who stayed overnight & all of them loved the accommodation. From the moment we chose The Swan for our wedding we were looked after by Bethany the Events Manager who was absolutely incredible. I was stressed & nervous & Bethany made everything better. Communication was brilliant & she did everything she can to make things as seamless as possible - & they were. I had a very specific idea on how I wanted the room, decor & tables to look & it was all beautiful - I could not have wished for a better person to take care of us. We were back n forth to the venue arranging things & all the staff are always incredibly polite & helpful, nothing is too much trouble. Freddie & Annabel also deserve a mention but everyone is great. The food for our reception was amazing - to be able to produce meals of that quality on that scale cannot be easy but everyone loved the wedding breakfast & the evening buffet was equally delicious. Lots of vegan & vegetarian options too. So many good things to say so I'll finish with that I could not recommend The Swan enough, venue, service, food & rooms - PERFECTION! & once again - THANK YOU BETHANY - you are AMAZING! Our day was perfect because of you! xxx

A beautiful building, location and attentive staff. We came for afternoon tea but we were very disappointed. To start with the savoury afternoon tea option was no longer available even though the chef had been made aware that a lot of people had been asking for it.to be back on the menu again, . The presentation of the food was lovely but it lacked flavour and was not seasoned. The scones were the best part of the afternoon tea. The cakes on the top layer were bland and we didn’t eat them. I know this is all down to personal taste but having tried several afternoon teas this was very disappointing and especially for the money.

We had a fantastic stay at The Swan Inn in Lavenham. The service throughout was excellent and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. Dinner was truly five-star, especially impressive given it was a busy Saturday night. The spa was a real highlight, relaxing and beautifully kept. Overall, a wonderful hotel that I would highly recommend.
Sam T — Google review
While the Swan is a handsome property and the staff are well-meaning, we did not enjoy staying or eating at the hotel. We stayed in a garden room with our dog on the first floor (# 24) for two nights and found the room hot and stuffy with only one small window, the decoration was a bit sterile with no art on the walls, pillows and linens were not good quality, and the shower over the bath was hard to navigate. After a day of walking around beautiful Lavenham, we were looking forward to a nice afternoon nap -- but there was live music in the bar from 3:00 to 5:30 which reverberated throughout the hotel. The restaurants were disappointing. The servers are young and friendly but not very professional and competent. We had drinks in the garden and had to chase someone to place our drinks order -- and then they brought the wrong order. We had one dinner in the Brasserie and had to chase someone to seat us and place our dinner order. We had two breakfasts in the main dining room and there were delays and confusion about our coffee/tea order on both days. The food was fine, but the poor service made dining at the hotel not very enjoyable. Overall, the dining side seems to lack good management -- someone to oversee that the servers are working smartly, dirty tables are cleared, etc. We like the historical architecture and appreciate that the staff were friendly -- but the overall experience, value for money, and comfort of the visit were all below the standard we have enjoyed at other Pride of Britain hotels.

Lovely traditional hotel in great location. We enjoyed the facilities at the spa during our stay. Food was excellent. Service 10/10. Overall everything was just perfect. Would 100% definitely stay there again.

Normally I stay in a hotel, even if its amazing and think, "it would be perfect if..." I could not think of one thing I would have asked for over what I had. Whoever is in charge had thought of everything I could possibly want to make my stay wonderful. Friendly, but not pompous or obsequious, team. Coffee bags for real coffee in the rooms, extra large rooves for bigger guests in the spa, gorgeous toiletries in public loos and rooms, amazing choice of fresh cooked breakfast. The hotel is beautiful, clean with modern fittings and furnishings, but not at odds with the age of the building. I cannot wait to return, my whole stay was delightful and brought me intense joy.

Called ahead for a table for Sunday lunch. Waited in the bar way past the time of our booking and had to ask staff if our table was ready as they didn’t come and get us. We finally sat down nearly half an hour after our booked time with no explanation or apology for the wait although we had phoned through only 20 minutes prior to arriving. Restaurant was not overly busy. My husband and I both ordered a beef roast. Vegetables and Yorkshire pudding were nice but roast beef was grisly and inedible. My husband asked for steak knives as we couldn’t cut through the beef which he mentioned to a member of staff who seemed unconcerned when it was mentioned. There was no usual check that everything was ok. Husband struggled on with his beef and ate it but I couldn’t eat mine even though by then we were both very hungry. When our meal was collected and we reported again that it wasn’t ok the staff member apologised but queried why my husband had eaten his. A staff discount was taken off as I couldn’t eat mine but honestly for the price it was a complete letdown. A staff member also dropped some cutlery on the floor and picked it up and wiped it on his sleeve! Large cobweb across the window where we were sitting as well. Very disappointed and would definitely avoid at all costs!

Attentive, super polite waiting and bar staff. Well portioned mains. This is more a restaurant than a pub, choice of beer limited. Our food; Caesar Salad with added chicken - breast preferred over the thigh meat served, Ploughman’s pickles, pie and scotch egg all very good, bread slightly stale and cheddar nothing special. 2 fish and chips went down well, fat chips and good quality fish Better beer pubs nearby but this has a spacious dining room and a variety of outdoor spaces

Lovely pub, very clean and tidy and new looking. Nicely decorated and laid out, good menu, fair price and good quality. Like the outside area particularly, nice big round tables and excellent resin floor surface. Staff well trained in customer service and very presentable. Well done 👍
Paul P — Google review
Only popped in for a drink, so can't comment on the food. Plus points are there's plenty of parking spaces and outdoor tables. Interior has been "modernised", which in this case means lots of cheap feeling, easy to clean furnishings and a distinct lack of atmosphere. Only one cask ale available. It's a pity that Lavenham has no really decent pubs. I guess they must do decent food here.
Jon G — Google review
Recommended by the Daily Telegraph as the place to eat in Lavenham. A traditional looking place from the outside, but inside it's had a designer makeover. Some will like it, others not. Service was pleasant, food was good. Big carpark next door. The village and the church are well worth wandering around.

A truly excellent pub, dog friendly - allowed in the bar and lounge but not the restaurant. Recently refurbished and very swanky, we were the first to arrive on a Monday lunch, but it quickly filled up, and that is always a good sign. Peas soup was lovely, as was the roasted onion sandwich, wish we could have stayed for a bigger meal, but just passing through. The car park at the side is the council run honesty pay scheme, great to explore Lavenham from and then come back to the Cock Horse for a bit of sustenance. The two hot chocolates we had were a little on the tepid side, not what you'd want on cold February Monday, but this was the only gripe, otherwise a place to recommend to all. A little bit pricey, but worth it!

Beautiful countryside village in Sudbury, Colchester. Later I drove to another beautiful village called Clare. It's worth driving along the countryside during the summer time to discover many beautiful villages.

So beautiful to visit. If you come close or travelling around Suffolk you have to stop by and have a walk into Lavenheim village. Houses, buildings, restaurants, cafés and shops are just amazing. It's a typical village with colourful and historical building and houses. Craft shops, Nice Restaurant. You also have to stop by one of the most famous house in the Harry Potter's movies. Just enjoy and have a walk.

Churches & Cathedrals
St Peter and St Paul's Church in Lavenham has a rich history, with a place of worship on the site since the Anglo Saxon era. The current building dates back to the 16th century and was funded by wealthy wool merchants, including support from the influential De Vere family. The church is known for its impressive medieval architecture and stunning stained glass windows, making it one of Lavenham's top attractions.
It's much more interesting to approach from the back. Stained glass windows are vibrant, some are so good that they feel almost 3D! The space doubles as a gallery showcasing the local artists' work for sale. Tiles are interesting too

Absolutely stunning building. A very poignant memorial to Lance Corporal Jonathan Woodgate and also very interesting and touching tributes to those who fell during WW1 and WW2. A beautiful building for reflection and memories!

What a night, what a show! Seeing the ultimate Coldplay inside this amazing church last night was, for me one of the finest live band shows I think I've ever seen. The acoustics, and I wear hearing aids, was superb, I could hear nearly every word of the lyrics...which is unusual for me. The performance by the whole band was nothing less than superb breathtakingly good. If you haven't seen these guys, go on their website and make sure you book to see them... A big thank you to the band, all the teams behind the scenes and of course the Church for allowing such an event.

This is a beautiful church full of architectural details, lovely stained glass and amazing stone carvings on the exterior, it should not have been too much of a surprise as it is situated in the historic village of Lavenham The church is a very peaceful and meditative place with plenty of history on show including a small memorial area to the USAAF 487 Bomber Group that was stationed in the area during WWII. If you are in Lavenham please visit this Church, it leaves you with a powerful sense of place.

Beautiful church, inside and outside, in the pitoresk medieval village Lavenham. The church is large and exceptionally grand. Rebuilt in the late 15th century by a consortium of local families.

Day spa
After a day filled with exploration and indulgence, there's no better way to unwind than at Weavers' House Spa, located within the historic Swan Hotel. This contemporary boutique spa is nestled in a serene courtyard, offering guests a perfect blend of modern luxury and historical charm. With its thermal heat suite and an inviting outdoor heated vitality pool, Weavers' House Spa promises rejuvenation through exceptional holistic treatments that leave you feeling refreshed.
This place is easily my favorite spa in all Suffolk! I recommend it to everyone, and regularly go there myself my own 'me time'. The massages are amazing. The staff is always so professional and sweet. The facility is beautiful. And all the little treats and experiences that come with the visit (water bed massage-table topper, mini sorbets, fnishing an already amazing treatment off with a pot of tea and gourmet macaroons, etc.) really help to make it a whole experience, and set it above the rest. 10/10 recommend.

I've been having various treatments for over 20 years, expensive places, not expensive places - this was 100% the BEST massage and facial I've ever had, without a doubt. Had a guy called Reece, I highly recommend this spa.

Fantastic....if you need to unwind I reccomend this spa. We were greeted and shown around the lovely surroundings by a lovely member of staff. Our robes so fluffy, slippers and towel..jewelry bag and a bag for wet clothes were all in our locker. We sat and relaxed in the lounge looking out onto the patio where the hot spa pool was. We had drinks and Danish pastries (plenty) we could enjoy fruit and lemon water also. Then we had our treatment....the best I've ever had by Sarah Beth... Followed by sorbet..tea and macaron in the quiet lounge....no hard sell on products but they were amazing!!!! We had the mama's pamper spa

Had the pleasure of visiting here for a massage. I had been meaning to make the journey for a while but finally found some time for myself, which I recommend anyone thinking of trying here, to do, its very much worth travelling for. It's the little touches that make the difference and they know how to do this here. Welcome smoothies, fluffy robe & slippers, sorbet and tea to complete my visit. My massage with Ellie was lovely, room and bed toasty warm and her pressure was spot on. I left feeling relaxed and muscles eased. Thankyou!

Had such a lovely experience, the spa is wonderful! My beauty therapist Sophie was very good! Everyone was friendly, lovely little touches, receives a nice welcome smoothie and sorbet as well as herbal tea after my treatment! Will definitely be returning!

I cannot recommend Weaver’s spa highly enough. If you are looking for 5 star luxury and to feel like a million dollars this is the place to go. From my initial email inquiry, through to walking in, getting changed, receiving my treatment and spending time in the spa I felt like I had won the lottery for how you are made to feel. The building, staff, products finishing touches all are above and beyond expectation. I came for the day to enjoy some time to unwind and relax which after Fiona asked me what I wanted to achieve from and then what it would involve and how she would tailor for me, she definitely delivered better than I had ever hoped in giving me the best massage I’ve ever had! The only negative is having to leave, I’m already looking at when I can come back and know what will now always be on my birthday and Christmas list.
Zoe J — Google review
My husband and I spent time at Weavers Spa whilst staying at the Swan Hotel. There were nice touches throughout our experience and the staff were friendly and welcoming. However I have given 4 stars rather than five as maintenance of the facilities lets it down. The outside cold shower was out of order and the aircon was also not working. The sunken spa bath outside was very hot and with no way to cool down there were a lot of very red faces walking around. I also felt the massage bed was positioned to0 high for the lady giving the massage, it meant there was uneven pressure applied when she was using both hands across my body and must have been awkward for her too. I would visit again as I enjoyed my treatments and the ambience and proximity to the hotel. Just hope everything is working next time!

The Crooked House, Lavenham

Historical landmark
The Crooked House in Lavenham is a bright orange building on High Street, dating back to 1395 and originally part of a medieval hall. It reflects the wealth of rich merchants from Lavenham's flourishing wool trade. The current owners have transformed it into a unique venue, emphasizing the area's 600-year history.
This was our absolute highlight of lavenham! The house front is amazing and to our delight, a scroll with a red ribbon magically wiggle out the front mail slot with details and the rhyme. Thank you new owners for bringing even more magic to this interesting village !
Natalie F — Google review
The house is located on the high street with lots of traffic. Its a very beautiful building like many others in the town. Its a bit wonky and often photographed or painted. There is almost all the time a car parked in front of it as you can see in 4 out of 5 pictures, that's a bit annoying for me as a photographer. Ido think this house has some touristic value and the car stands there on purpose, which ruins the picture.
Kart O — Google review
If you wish to go back to Victorian England then life as a rich wool merchant could be for you. What an immersive experience from start to finish. Not for the larger person due to narrow staircase and small doorways.
Melanie F — Google review
Super confused with what it is. Was told initially that it now houses a tea room but apparently it's no longer the case. Be that as it may, it's a beautiful structure architecturally and also rooted in one of the many sights that was CGI-ed into Harry Potter. Worth a quick stop for the gram. Would appreciate if better communication could be had regarding what the building is and what its use for so visitors can get some information / history about it

Nestled in a quaint town known for its cream teas, Memsaab stands out as an exceptional Indian restaurant that surprises visitors with its vibrant flavors and diverse menu. While it offers beloved classics like mild kormas and spicy jalfrezis, the real stars are the unique specialties such as Nizami chicken—an exciting blend of yogurt and fresh ginger—and tiger prawn bhuna, infused with garlic and spring onion.
Went here for my birthday. We have been here several times in the past. Always good food, pleasant staff, good service. Always best to phone in advance to book a table. Roadside parking, this is a village location.

So after quite some time we returned to Lavenham for a few days. Decided to take a trip down memory lane and go to Memsaab with our friends for dinner. The greeting was extremely poor and genuinely got worse for the foreseeable ! Absolutely no respect for customers which I find disgraceful ! Customers pay your wages, pay your rent, pay your utility bills, pay your suppliers and that list goes on. Never have I had an experience like this when choosing one restaurant over the many others on offer. I really suggest that the two staff/owners or whatever they were working front of house yesterday evening, seriously invest in customer service skills before people don’t return. A person above described it as a moment from faulty towers !!! I was also about to say this. But without the humour. It seemed that we were making a nuisance of ourselves for being there. We found the whole experience laughable and only saved by the amazing food we ate, once they took all the dishes back because it wasn’t our order. And made us feel it was our fault. Nothing about the experience would make me return, the food was another matter. The food was delicious so compliments to the chef ! I hope Memsaab is still there when we return, but I seriously doubt that unless there’s some customer service training ! No manners, no smiles, no thank yous, just the coldest experience I’ve ever experienced, from 2 couples wouldn’t let it spoil their evening ! In the words of Basil ….. I need a lie down 😂

Consistently Superb Cuisine We come to Memsaab relatively regularly, and have been doing so for some years now. We usually buy takeaways, but occasionally eat in the restaurant too. The food has always been delicious and cooked well, and the service is polite, friendly, and efficient. After having tried other Indian restaurants in the locality, I would elect Memsaab as the best Indian restaurant in the area. Lately, I have seen and been quite concerned by a few disappointing online reviews from other diners written during the earlier months of 2023, interestingly being submitted on mobile. We dined at Memsaab for New Year’s Eve 2023, and as well as having a very good meal, we observed other diners, and the waiting times for a few customers collecting takeaways, and noted precisely none of the problems described in the aforementioned reviews. Our meal worked out at roughly £25 each, including drinks and service (at 10%) – this restaurant offers great food at good value! We had a very good evening with excellent food, promptly and politely served. When we arrived, we were promptly shown to our table, noticing the manager was absent from his usual spot. The kitchen and front of house operated smoothly, and he later appeared in chef's whites, explaining he had assisted in the kitchen due to a surge in orders. Our drinks and papadoms came very quickly, with generous quantities of four relishes. For our meal, we ordered eight dishes, which we shared between us. The time from ordering to serving at the table was around 25 minutes (the order was freshly cooked). We ordered a range of dishes, starting with the chicken dhansak, which was very tasty, coming with freshly cooked pilao rice. To join this, we ordered: a vegetable korma (delicious creamy sauce, with a good variety of vegetables, all gently and subtly spiced, and plenty of coconut); a chana masala (gently spicy, well-balanced flavours); onion bhajis (generously portioned, freshly cooked and pleasantly moist and crisp); saag paneer (deliciously creamy, very vegetarian friendly); brinjal bhaji (not actually on the menu, but the chef made a very decent effort, considering it was only cooked in less than half an hour). We also ordered peshwari naan, which had generous quantities of ground almonds and coconut. As we were there, the restaurant was reasonably busy, with multiple people collecting takeaways, and many restaurant tables being occupied. There were no apparent delays in service, and people around us were notably satisfied, especially the group opposite our table. In light of potential concerns delineated in a few reviews from earlier in the year, our visits during 2023 serve to validate Memsaab’s sterling standards in quality, service, and ambience. I hereby warmly express my continued recommendation for Memsaab of Lavenham. PS: a (belated) Happy New Year! As we embark on 2024, let's appreciate the hard work of restaurants and ensure that our critiques are constructive and fair.

Stopped here on a Monday night and it was outstanding so felt compelled to leave a glowing review. Best curry I have had in some time. Wonderful flavour and superb side dishes also. Thoroughly recommended. Given it was a Monday food was ready very fast and we did not have to wait as other reviews suggested. Chicken shashlik Bhuna highly recommended.

We honestly thought we’d walked into an episode of Fawlty Towers! The service was comical from start to finish. When we arrived, the restaurant only had one couple inside. We mentioned we’d booked and the waiter huffed like it was hard work to find our table. While we were still enjoying our papadoms, he suddenly came over, threw his arms up in the air, then dropped them back down again – we couldn’t stop laughing 🤣. When it came to paying, they didn’t accept Amex. We tried with Mastercard, but I had to insert the card instead of tapping, which earned us a big eye roll 🤣🤣. That said – the food was genuinely delicious, and the prices were excellent. Despite the comedy service, or maybe because of it, we left in good spirits. We’ll definitely be returning!

Really lovely restaurant with some curries and dishes that I have't seen before. We both tried new curries and it was delicious, the naans are already cut up so they don't take up half the table which is thoughtful. Restaurant itself is stylish and also felt traditional, staff are very friendly and it was busy which is also a good sign. If I lived in the area than I would be back.

Dinner for two in the Bistro Restaurant. Ordered Wonderwall draught beer and it smelled and tasted of vinegar (off) so returned it. Ordered Duck salad. The duck was OK but salad consisted mostly of peeled coloured carrots and hot chillies. Edible. My wife ordered the Tempura Monkfish. Tempura is a light batter that can easily be eaten with just a fork. This one resembled peanut brittle which my wife couldn't get into. The server offered her a bigger knife! Took fish and chips as a replacement which was a bit bland and didn't taste great. It was a real disappointment as the breakfasts we had here were amazingly good and the room/hotel decor and buildings exceptional.

Overpriced mediocre food. The courgette flower sounded temping, but oops, it was not available. Caprese salad ? “Sorry, not available “. Burrata Bruschetta? Nope, they don’t have it. We ordered the seared tune, ravioli as main course, and cauliflower croquettes. We got an overcooked supposedly fresh tuna with average salsa dressing. OK cauliflower croquettes with bland thick sauce and what was supposed to be crispy Cavalo Nero and turned out to be a chewy inedible “something”. Finally, £27 for a small portion of ravioli, which was supposed to be a main course and therefore larger than entrée portion, but it wasn’t. Honestly, the whole thing showed disrespect to dinners.

Had lunch here yesterday. The food was good, but let down by the lack of service. Our pre-lunch drinks arrived 60 mins after we ordered and were half way through the main course. Munnings Tea Rooms is located on the ground floor of a charmingly crooked medieval building, offering a warm and cozy atmosphere. The tea room serves an array of cakes, afternoon teas, and light lunches with friendly service. It is known for its strong aromatherapy scents due to the sale of perfumes. Visitors can enjoy cream teas with generously sized scones served with cream, jam, and fresh strawberries. The establishment is dog-friendly and has been praised for its accommodating service.
Tea room of "There was a crooked house..." fame... allegedly. Always a good selection of home baked cakes, good quality tea and hot water top up. We had well-filled sandwiches served with a salad garnish, tiny teacup of coleslaw and crisps. Bakewell and lemmon drizzle were delicious. Card machine wasn't working during our visit but adjacent Coop's have ATM/cashback facility.

Visited here for a Cream Tea, after visiting the Guildhall. We ordered our cream teas, which arrived quite quickly. The scones where of good size with cream, jam & fresh strawberries. On another table, which had ordered sandwiches, could be heard asking for a doggy bag, as there was more than they could eat. Which was given to them with out any question asked. Once inside, after going up a couple of steps, the place is small/cosy, with tables layout with table cloths.

Lovely and quaint tea room. Just right for afternoon tea. You only get one choice each of sandwiches but as they are much larger than usual, and if 2 of you can do a swop, it wasn't a problem. The scones are amazing and equally large, with wonderful clotted cream and jam. We had to bring our cake home as we were so full. Definitely worth a visit but best to book.

The paella the most tasteless one I ever tried. This was a rice with some prawn but nothing all about The Paella. It was basically rice without salt, seasoning and the typical flavour of a Paella. This dish also cost too expensive for what it is. This dish cost around 21£ for two people. I would prefer to pay a bit more but enjoying what I buy. It was totally disappointing, however the service was great. Sorry guys on this time for this rating. We were so excited as soon as we saw you had Paella on the menu.

Really nice Sunday lunch here today. The menu on a Sunday is small and that’s a good thing - Really bored of pages of descriptions of food when all you really want is a nice roast! There were vegan options but I plumped for the roast beef served with carrots, red cabbage, Yorkie, lovely gravy, roasties and cauli cheese. For pudding I had the sticky toffee one which was more of a date pudding than anything else but still OK and served with ice cream. All in all a lovely meal served in nice surroundings.

1. Start with entrance....not disabled friendly, extremely steep and difficult to access. 2. Staff..quite friendly but a cold atmosphere. Looked quite bored. 3. Food.... awful. Ordered a sharing platter of meat selection. Received a small wooden board suitable for 1 person not 2. Meat was cold *straight from fridge and hard. 1 gherkin cut in half. Dried out olives. What should have been extra virgin olive oil mixed with balsamic, was a tiny bowl oil (? EVO) no flavour at all. Bread obviously cooked from frozen so dry and hard. There was a really small piece of green (lettuce?) and small bowl of mayonnaise. Had asked for chips for 2. We received this. However chips were thick and some were not cooked in the centre. Had to ask for salt. Overall meal was awful. Complained and was given a "sorry . We will take chips off the bill". We rarely complain in restaurants but this should not have been served to customers. Appearance of inside restaurant was good, but there was no warming atmosphere at all. What a let down as we Had come to Lavenham for what should have been a lovely day but spoilt by food. Never again. Went somewhere else where we had lovely cake in nice friendly atmosphere with lovely staff.

Tea house
Cake shop
Lavenham Blue Vintage Tea Rooms is a family run tea house in a 15th century timber-framed cottage. It offers delicious afternoon tea with homemade coffee and walnut and lemon cakes. The tea house is popular with locals and has been awarded two certificates of excellence from Trip Advisor.
As self professed scone aficionados we enjoy trying out authentic tea shops for the ‘real deal’ and Vintage Blue did not disappoint. The fact that the location is exquisite, the mismatched china and quirky decor feels like your grandmother’s house, with a real old fashioned vibe and friendly staff - just added to the experience. I enjoyed a pot of coffee and a fruit scone with blackcurrant jam! What a treat! It was delicious. There were plenty of cakes to try which looked splendid and the savoury menu options were interesting too. All in all a really nice visit and from all the phone calls which were coming in it looks as though you should book a table to avoid disappointment! The ambience is lovely.

Our first visit and most definitely not our last. A delightful tearoom with bone China service. The sandwiches were absolutely delicious ,served with some crisps, delicious Coleslaw, salad bits and some celery. Mmmmmmm. We then had scrumpy scones and a large slice of fiery ginger cake with a smallll pot of vanilla and honey ice-cream. The tearoom is very popular and also has a small garden and room upstairs. The pot of tea was served with 3 small egg timers...each one denoted the strength of the tea...how unique! Service was brilliant and very friendly. TEAROOMTASTIC! 10/10

We had an absolutely amazing experience here in the most delightful setting, of the 'Blue vintage Tea Rooms, here in Lavenhham. In glorious spring sunshine made it just perfect. The staff, service and food, were superb and afternoon tea was just delightful. This is an extremely popular Tea-Rooms, as we did, I would, highly recommend pre booking to avoid any disappointment. First time visiting Lavenham. What a beautiful historical place. On the hunt for a tea shop we came across Blue Vintage Cafe. A sweet time travelled cafe. Wonderful cakes and drinks. The staff are very welcoming. We came as a family of four. Great choices for children too. Definitely would visit again

The restaurant boasts a charming and tasteful decor, creating a pleasant dining atmosphere. The food offerings are expertly prepared and bursting with flavor, satisfying even the most discerning palate. Exceptional service, delivered with a warm and welcoming demeanor, enhances the overall dining experience. A standout dish, the Ploughman's lunch, exemplifies the kitchen's commitment to quality and freshness. This combination of ambiance, cuisine, and service makes for a truly memorable visit.

The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds is a charming establishment with uniquely designed rooms set within an old-world pub. The hotel showcases the historical essence of ancient coaching inns, such as the Swan Hotel, which maintains its original appearance from the middle ages. Inside the Angel, one can admire splendid 14th-century wall paintings, while the Swan incorporates a magnificent old Wool Hall at its rear. The front porch of the Angel was once used as a coach entrance to the stable yard.
Lavenham was one of England's wealthiest towns in the 15th and 16 centuries primarily because of its thriving wool trade. The town's prosperity funded the construction of stunning medieval buildings the best of which are in the market place, including the Angel Hotel, making it one of the best preserved medieval towns in the UK. The Angel Hotel was established around 1420 and is reputed to be haunted by a former landlady. I only stopped there for a drink, but the rooms are really reasonably priced and wouldn't mind stopping here next time I'm in the area.

Requested a twin room but arrived to be shown into a double. Couldn't be changed until the following day apparently! Went down for breakfast on Saturday morning at about 8:30 (breakfast served from 8 - 10). No staff apart from the cleaner. She kindly tried to provide some tea, milk and cereals - and bread. So we made do without a cooked breakfast (included in the rate we paid). At about 9:10 a young lady appeared who offered us a cooked breakfast just as we were about to leave the restaurant. No apology. No kitchen staff. Just awful. I did get an apology from the General Manager later that day and Sunday morning breakfast was fine. Certainly won't use this hotel again.

We were looking for a quiet place for a cup of coffee in the otherwise busy village. The pub didn't serve scones so we opted to have a couple of deserts. This was a good choice as they by were exceptionally good. The venue was perfect for a chat, and the staff were friendly and efficient.

Had a great lunch here yesterday. Great pint of Guinness and it’s worth coming here just for the chips. Amazing food. Annoyingly there’s a 10% service charge on the bill but we would have tipped more but didn’t because of it. Anyway it’s well worth a visit.

We were driving around south of England. Stayed the night here. Since it was already evening we decided to wine and dine here. Food was wonderful! The staff were very friendly too. 🥰 Don’t know why some people are whining about the food and services here, we’ve got nothing to complain. Our stay has been very enjoyable. Give the local businesses here some credits. They’ve been through a lot in the past years. For a small establishment like the Angel Hotel, i think they did great keeping their customers happy and satisfied. Keep up the good job! And for those whiners, go to Hyatt, Marriott or Hilton if you want that (over the top) experiences. We are happy with our experience at the Angel Hotel, Lavenham. ❤️

We stayed one night (5 Dec 23) and couldn't believe our luck by having selected The Angel. Reviews are about opinions, and not everyone agrees with them. However, we were accompanied by our dog, and all of us were welcomed by John, the owner. Preliminaries over, we were shown to our room, and as you might expect in Lavenham, there was a wealth of charm and character throughout (and characters, too, including 'F & F' (an in-joke. Stay, and let John explain)). The room was simply furnished, and the only criticism could be the extremely slow flow of the water in the bathroom - but who really cares? The bed was spotlessly laundered and exceptionally comfortable, and there were the usual courtesy provisions. Although we had arranged to meet family and dine elsewhere in the evening, the breakfast was simply superb. Excellent quality products, presented beautifully and clearly cooked by a chef who cares. We had a Full English (a rare treat), and smoked salmon with scrambled egg, and a large cafetiere of rich dark coffee. All of the staff throughout our visit were attentive, accommodating, and charming, and the team collectively deserve to be praised. We highly recommend The Angel Hotel, especially to anyone preferring a more gentle and personal style of hotel. We certainly aim to stay there again next time we are in the area.

Saturday lunch spot with friends and family. Super friendly and efficient staff. There were 7 of us and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. I ordered something I thought was GF and the kitchen picked up on it straight away and the waitress made a good suggestion for an alternative. Healthy portion sizes served with a smile made for happy diners. Will definitely return and recommend to friends.

Visited on a Saturday evening when they were quiet, the barmaid didn't acknowledge us for a few minutes not even a hello. We then asked if they had a table for 2 to dine and despite clearly having lots of empty tables, we were told no because we have 14 people dining across multiple tables so can't cater for anymore at the moment. I don't know how they would cope if they were busy.

This lovely independent sells gorgeous gifts, accessories and things for the home. The lovely Lienne is my go to stockist for some of my favourite local crafters. She really does care about supporting local and handmade. She was a huge help for birthday presents and cards during the last lockdown and this one, with her online offering via social media. She'll write cards and tags in her beautiful handwriting and post out for you directly. I've also loved using her click and collect service for gifts for me. Can't wait to shop in person after lockdown when Posy can reopen.

Nestled in the picturesque village of Lavenham, Lavenham Contemporary is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. This charming gallery showcases the remarkable works of local artist Paul Evans, whose stunning paintings capture the essence of Suffolk's countryside. From expansive wheat fields adorned with moon-shaped straw bales to other captivating rural scenes, his artwork reflects both beauty and tranquility. The gallery itself offers a bright and inviting atmosphere where you can leisurely explore without any pressure to purchase.
I love this gallery Paul Evans is very talented and there is a wide range of his art on sale plus potters work. Even if you can only afford some cards worth a visit especially in the autumn when his show is on.

We have several of Paul Evans' pictures. If you are ever in the area I would recommend this gallery in Lavenham above all the rest. The quality of the work is exceptional and the experience of walking round the gallery with no pressure to buy just to peruse will probably end up with you falling in love with his work as we did. A high quality artist and a high quality viewing experience.

I love the contemporary art displayed in a light, bright gallery. There is something for most budgets even down to post cards. The artist is usually in residence with his paintings and there are also sculptures by carefully selected members of his artistic circle.
