Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is a traditional Alpine village set at the foot of the spectacular Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval, a vast limestone amphitheater ringed by cliffs and waterfalls. It offers direct access to the Grand Massif ski area in winter and a network of well-marked hiking and biking trails in summer. Much of the surrounding landscape is protected, making it appealing for wildlife watching, peaceful walks, and scenery-focused photography. The compact village center, with its stone houses and historic church, gives a quieter, more authentic feel than many larger French resorts.
With favorites like Gorges des Tines, Altitude Rafting Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, and Nunabar - Pizzeria, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Nunabar - Pizzeria and Auberge de la Cascade du Rouget so you can get the best taste of Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval is a stunning natural reserve in France, known for its picturesque limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls. The area is home to diverse wildlife including ibexes and marmots, offering visitors the opportunity to hike and swim in a pristine environment. The nearby village of Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval adds to the charm, being recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
I can really recommend this place! It's absolutely beautiful. The surroundings are spectacular, with beautiful sights of mountains, waterfalls, and lots of green. I, myself, am not that fit (at all!), but there was a path good enough for beginners. It's available by wheelchair, but do notice that the ground is partially loose, so it's a bit difficult. There are parking spots near, for €7,- a day. The free parking is a long walk away. There are terasses for refreshments. It's a bit overpriced, but you have beautiful surroundings! The public restroom was dirty, and I would not recommend it! Also, it is not available by wheelchair. The giftshop does have a cleaner toilet, though! For the more experienced hiker, there is also a lot to explore.

Amazing amazing place. You can see the majestic alps with dozens of waterfalls around you with beautiful cliffs. There are dozens of different hikes in the area which are easy and reveal amazing scenery. Must see when in the area.
Idan S — Google review
A really lovely circular walk, unfortunately some of the path was closed meaning we couldn’t walk the loop and had to walk out and back An easy walk for all family members except for dogs, dogs are only allowed on part of the trail Lots of beautiful waterfalls to see on this walk
Lisa L — Google review
Most beautiful place on Earth, nothing more to say !
Mavrik R — Google review
If you are in Samoëns or Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval, this place needs no introduction. The trail is flat most of the way, with a steeper but non-technical hike to the cave at the end. There are some paths in the woods with shade to escape the heat. Views are splendid, although many waterfalls seemed to have gotten smaller or completely dried up when we got here in July. Probably the busiest trail in this area, with good reason!
Caleb L — Google review
One of the most beautiful hikes in the area, this family-friendly trail offers breathtaking views of the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval. Waterfalls cascade down towering cliffs, and the lush valley floor makes for a wonderfully accessible adventure.
Daniel M — Google review
Some nice walks and incredible views of the cliffs that surround the area. The waterfalls are a little less impressive than expected.
Tim S — Google review
One of the most beatyfull hikes you can do in the french alps. The hike it self is about 2 hours but its mostly a gravel road with sometimes sone loose stones so its easy but its recommended to wear hiking boots

Cascade du Rouget, also known as the "Queen of the Alps," is a stunning mountain waterfall with two separate flows cascading down a cliff. Located in Samoens, Flaine, and Les Carroz, this 80-meter high waterfall is easily accessible and offers a refreshing break. Visitors can embark on a pleasant walk to the waterfall from various starting points, either from the top at the chalet or from the village below.
What an amazing experience. The beautiful power of mother nature! Relax and enjoy the view while eating a crape and sipping on a latte! You can trek through the woods for better views and truly enjoy the serenity.
Brandon B — Google review
Beautiful waterfall, the walk to Le Lignon is worth a try, it's very(very) steep up to the tip of the waterfall, but it's definitely worth dropping down to see the river before it drops over the edge
Craig H — Google review
Best waterfall in the area, the sheer scale of it will leave you in awe. The flat rocks just in front of the waterfall make for great lunch spots, with a cool mist spreading across the area. If you are coming from Samoëns you can walk the forest trail to Gorges des Tines and continue all the way to Cascade du Rouget, I highly recommend it. Otherwise, the closest bus stop is in Sixt-Fer-a-Cheval, followed by a 30 minute walk to Salvagny, and another 30 minutes to the waterfall.
Caleb L — Google review
Truly beautiful waterfall splitting into two. Raw nature. Big splash. Beautiful forest around it. If you are in this valley its a must see!
Idan S — Google review
Great walk to the waterfall. You can start the walk from various places either from the top at the chalet or from right at the bottom at the village. Along the way you can park your car and either walk on the car path or go into the forest. We parked along the road walked a little on the road and then went in the forest. Can be done with kids, and can be slightly slippery. Once you are at the waterfall you can go up to the top. Along the way you find wild strawberries and blueberries.... Keep your eyes open 😊
Minerve — Google review
Amazing waterfall and when you drive up there is a great trail with even more waterfalls and lovely nature.
Jeroen P — Google review
Beautiful. This picture was in January 2022 when it was half frozen. In March when we visited before it was thawed and flowing. Its changes with the seasons so great to see any time off the year. Lovely walk from sixt after taking ski bus

Nice tall falls of about 100 feet falling with great flow. Worth coming of you're around. There a small restaurant nearby and also some parking. Its a great place for photos. You can also hike to the top.

The Gorges des Tines offers a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, picnicking, kayaking, and canyoning. Some areas even allow for swimming due to their shallow depth. In the summer months, there are shaded spots that provide a great place to relax. There is a short but enjoyable trail that is easy to navigate and includes three ladders in the steepest section.
You can hike, bike rides , do picnics, kayaking and cayonning ect.. in some places you can even swim along the banks as there are very little deapth.During summers there are shades and great place for relaxing as well.

We walked a short trail from the car park. Easy to follow. Lovely (but short) gorge. The trail included three kadders in the steepest section. Not suitable for dogs if you can't carry them.

Sagy B — Google review
I liked it however the trail isn't well marked. Its a great place for rock climbing but if you're coming just to walk along the river I'd skip it. We were in a rainy day and walking in the muddy wood was great but hard for the kids.
Yuval K — Google review
The best view is from the bridge, dont expect to get any closer or see anything more by doing the walk. Literally the most unimpressive gorge I have ever seen... skip it and head for your next point of interest!!

(Translated by Google) If you want to be well received, prefer the florist's mother. If you want to be poorly received I recommend the daughter, who criticizes you for not having reserved a bouquet for Mother's Day while the mother kindly agrees to make us one. She also insists, specifying twice that if we hadn't come across her mother she wouldn't have made the bouquet. The customer who gets yelled at for wanting to buy is quite funny!!!! Well in the end we have a pretty bouquet but we paid a high price for this one!! This will teach us not to reserve a bouquet in advance!

An exorbitant, prohibitive amount for a bland, lackluster bouquet. Opt for inexpensive bouquets from larger retailers. For the same quality, you'll pay 10 times less. Lac aux Dames, nestled in the heart of the Giffre valley, offers a picturesque setting surrounded by mountains. Whether it's witnessing lively fishing competitions in spring or enjoying the vibrant atmosphere during summer, this leisure center is a must-visit. Accessible by car, it provides ample space for relaxation and various activities such as archery and a children's park. The lake's beauty is accentuated by its surroundings, making it an ideal spot for picnics and leisurely walks.
These two lakes are very beautiful, as you will see in the attached pictures. Close to the village of Samonis. You will also see golf playing inside the lake, which is very strange. This is the first time I have seen such things and this view. As shown in the pictures, you will see a roundabout inside the lake. This is for golf. Of course, the two lakes are surrounded by very beautiful scenery

A beautiful view that this restaurant does not deserved. One of the worst cafes/restaurants I have ever visited in my life. The staff's treatment in the restaurant is ugly and racist. Such a workers cannot work in a tourist place. They did not give us a seat and we waited for 15 minutes and no one came to us and they did not show us the menu in English and whenever I asked them about a product in the pictures they said it did not exist. France is a high-class tourist country, such as these workers.

Nestled in a picturesque setting, Auberge de la Feuille d'Erable is a culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Guests rave about the exquisite charcuterie, particularly the homemade pâté en croûte and saucisson, complemented by delightful pickled vegetables. The fondue is described as nothing short of perfection, accompanied by thoughtfully crafted salads featuring goat cheese nuggets and nuts. The ambiance at this charming establishment enhances every meal; it’s perfect for gatherings with loved ones.
We brought 34 of our closest friends and family for a special, celebratory meal after our wedding in February 2024 and the food, atmosphere, and entire team working there exceeded any expectations. We couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect place to celebrate our marriage with our loved ones. We all agreed it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had and they treated us with such hospitality and warmth for the special occasion. Even helping us light sparklers on our wedding cake. We can’t wait to come back when we’re in the area to celebrate our anniversary and any special occasions going forward! Our new favorite restaurant! We are so grateful for the team who made our night unforgettable!

The location is stunning. The restaurant is very pretty. I imagine in the winter months, it's even nicer. There was a large terrace to eat outside. Started with a delicious cocktail. Food was lovely, thoughtful, and packed with flavours. Great wine list. Didn't try the speciality fondues, but will return definately.

We had a great dinner at Auberge de la Feuille d'Erable. Typical sarvoyard meals, delicious and served in a lovely atmosphere. We will come back during the winter to taste the reblochon fondue!

I don’t think you can do better in the area. Best charcuterie, especially the saucisson and homemade pâté croûte. The pickled veggies that go with were great. The salad that came with our fondue had great little details like small goat cheese nuggets, nuts and vegetables. Just very well thought out. The fondue itself was perfection. Just perfection. So was the service and the atmosphere. We had three generations at the table from two different continents and we all thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

Beautiful restaurant in Sixte. Pierre and the rest of the staff were so welcoming! The fondue were stunning. Such a lovely holiday memory for our family 😊 Thank you!

Cheese and steak-fondue was as always, very good. We come here every year when we visit Sixt, and it’s always the same, welcoming staff serving us. I really recommend this restaurant, but remember to book in advance. They don’t have many tables and they are almost always full. At least during the high season.

The service and atmosphere were amazing. The menu is limited and the fish dish was dry. Desserts were delicious
