Aylsham in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Aylsham, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Aylsham is a historic market town known for its traditional marketplace, attractive Georgian buildings and easy-going, small-town atmosphere. It sits on the edge of the Norfolk Broads and close to the North Norfolk coast, making it a useful base for exploring the wider region. Visitors can ride the heritage Bure Valley Railway through the countryside and visit the nearby National Trust Blickling Estate, a grand Jacobean house with extensive gardens and parkland. The town also hosts regular markets and local food events that showcase Norfolk produce.
With favorites like Biddy's Kitchen, Keys Fine Art Auctioneers, and National Trust - Blickling Estate, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like The Old Tea Rooms and Biddy's Kitchen so you can get the best taste of Aylsham while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Historic Sites
The National Trust - Blickling Estate is a grand 17th-century stately home adorned with intricate painted ceilings and surrounded by remarkable ornamental gardens. Spanning approximately 4,600 acres, the estate offers some of Norfolk's finest woodland walks, featuring forests, parks, and farmland. Visitors can explore the grounds and take in the serene lake while admiring the renowned bluebells.
Our visit was only to the house and we very much enjoyed our time there. Blickling comes as a bit of a surprise as one heads north from Aylsham, as there is little to broadcast its presence. One looks to the right, and suddenly there it is, beautifully framed by its massive, manicured hedges and impressive side buildings. Much of its current design dates from the early 1600s when it replaced the home of Anne Boleyn’s birth (and apparently her ghost still returns to visit each year on the anniversary of her execution). Inside, the house is filled with many magnificent portraits, with the baleful one-eyed glare of Field Marshall Sir Robert Rich greeting the visitor just inside the front door. On the ground floor the dining room, with its massive mantlepiece, is magnificent, and one can learn about the restoration of beautifully painted Victorian ceiling in the Brown Drawing room. Upstairs, the late 18th Century yellow and black Print Room is fascinating, but it is the plaster ceilings in the Long Gallery, South Drawing Room and the tapestry-decorated Upper Ante Room that are truly spectacular. Be sure to look up, as well as learn how the huge plaster pendant in the latter room has recently been preserved (Blickling has been at the forefront of pioneering new conservation methods). Finished with the house and looking for something else? There is the great little Royal Air Force Oulton Museum onsite, which shows how this stately old home supported local World War 2 efforts. Practical info: The Blickling car park is a good size, with overflow parking to the northwest. Two cafés are in close proximity to the house, and The Bucks Arms, with its pub, restaurant, and accommodation is located just off the car park. One may also take home a taste of Blicking, as some Walled Garden produce is available at a donation station by the welcome office. Allow 2-2.5 hours to visit the house, and add another 30-45 minutes for the RAF museum.

A beautiful building with interesting architecture. A lake with lots of wildlife. Kingfishers, otters, ducks, swans etc. Lovely colourful gardens, with fountains. Many walks through gardens and wooded areas. Plants can be bought at the shop, aswell as "National trust" hats & clothes. (Near car park). A book shop is also in the main building. There are facilities for food and drink. Public toilets and also seating areas around the grounds. Disabled access to most places. A car park is nearby and a pub. It's a great place to visit for adults and children.

We were fortunate to visit on a sunny day, which made the experience all the more enjoyable. The National Trust staff were helpful and welcoming throughout. The craftsmanship of the woodwork inside the house was truly impressive and beautifully preserved. The garden was equally delightful, meticulously maintained and a pleasure to explore. A memorable visit that reflects the care and dedication of everyone involved.

We visited whilst in holiday in Norfolk. The house was stunning, beautifully furnished. The gardens were also stunning. There was a walk around the lake which we didn't have time for but looked like it would be divine. The kids enjoyed the RAF museum and the huge bookshop. The cafe was great and they also had a really good summer activities for the holidays.

This must be one of the top NT properties Interesting house and gardens. Park walks recommended. We did the multi use trail all around the estate around 4 miles. Then after food the lake walk around 2 miles. Both excellent. The cafe was good. House volunteers excellent
John B — Google review
Beautiful house and estate, very well maintained both inside and out. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable and on hand to talk about the history. It would definitely be worth visiting the gardens in the spring and summer.
Andrew L — Google review
Most famous as the place where Anne Boleyn spent time while growing up and is rumoured (but not proven) to have been born here. The estate was gifted to the National Trust in 1940 by the last owner, having gone through a number of hands one of which was John Hobart the 2nd Earl of Buckingham who was ambassador to Russia in Catherine the Greats time, who decorated parts of the hall in honour of this. The hall has the largest collection of books in any National Trust property so is deemed a treasure house. Having visited today all rooms open was a fabulous site to see. Some magnificent decoration of the ornate ceilings. Most definitely worth a visit. It’s a definite treasure. There is also the garden and extensive grounds for walks to while away the hours.
Lynn M — Google review
Lovely national trust, we were able to go round the house and lots of volunteers able to provide information. We were lucky enough to be there on a day they were doing library conservation work which was so interesting. Lovely grounds and lots of benches for picnics. Good size cafe, we went with a baby in buggy, wasn’t able to take buggy round the house as there was lots of stairs, but about to take buggy easily round cafe, shop and the grounds. Would go again

Keys Fine Art Auctioneers

3.8

Auction house
Keys Fine Art Auctioneers is a highly efficient and helpful auction house that offers in-house shipping at affordable rates. Despite their busy schedule, they ensure quick and careful delivery of purchased items. Visitors appreciate the convenience of having refreshments available at the on-site cafe, where they are well taken care of by the friendly staff. The auctions feature a diverse range of items to suit various budgets, making it a great place for both buyers and sellers.
I don't normally write reviews but I just wanted to write a quick note to say thank you to to Keys who have been one of the most efficient and helpful auctioneers I have come across. They responded to my request for an invoice within minutes. The in-house shipping was affordable and the Lowestoft bowl that I had bought arrived quickly and carefully packaged. This is despite the fact they had a busy summer auction in progress. I would highly recommend them. Thanks again.
Rahul P — Google review
Its like watching grass grow only went as has a few items for sale the auctioneers voice never changes tone but I guess its hard not to have a character doing the same repetitive speel, cafè was nice friendly girls with plenty of banter and cheek to match but in a nice way plenty of parking no actual seating available in the auction rooms so jad to make do with chairs that were on sale which is a bit cheeky as they belong to someone eventually, but by the same token the experiance was worth it all. PS sold everything I took in but no Del and Rodney moment,
Michael O — Google review
The website is the only professional part to this set up ! I would have preferred to have been offered the chance to set out my own lots. One of my items was listed as a Disney letter rack when it was actually a toast rack! I had a selection of wall art, around 11 items listed as modern advertising which was absolute nonsense. Sold for a ridiculous low price as was the pottery collection that was not described correctly. I certainly won’t be going back or recommending anyone else to bother!
Elaine R — Google review
Once again I was promised out payment yesterday and even have not in writing but no nope in the bank. Thankfully that was the last of our stuff to be sold. The first time was weeks before we were told the sale happened and again weeks before payment as ‘the boss’ had been on holiday. Very disappointing
Janet S — Google review
After a year of attempting to sell our items only partially successfully and for low value, we ended up significantly out of pocket after paying all their fees and collection charges. While office staff were polite and as helpful as they could be, there was no communication or advice from managers/auctioneers to discuss a strategy for selling the many items or how we would like to proceed. In hindsight we would have been better off giving the items to charity shops. It was a heartbreaking experience to see everything we had worked so hard to build up over years to go for less than nothing. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend Keys Auctioneers and would certainly never use them again.
Samantha H — Google review
One of the worst auction houses I ever had to deal with. The whole experience is irritating. Avoid if you can.
Onur — Google review
Great place to find a bargain. Furniture and pictures mostly- be prepared to do a bit of work to clean up and restore but there is amazing stuff at great prices if you have a bit of imagination.

Lovely little tea room, with a cozy and homely atmosphere. Home made cakes and scones, with a nice selection of sandwiches available. Good service and reasonable prices. Can get quite busy as it is a fairly small place. But overall, a nice place to go for some tea and cake.

Tea house
Biddy's Kitchen, located near the charming parish church of St. Michaels, is a popular spot known for its wide selection of over 60 types of tea and generously sized cakes. The cozy and eclectic atmosphere invites visitors to spend leisurely hours indulging in their excellent afternoon teas. With an array of more than 50 blends to choose from, this quaint tea room in Aylsham offers a delightful experience for tea enthusiasts.
We had a great experience a Biddy’s, really friendly and welcome service - excellent food, and a really nice atmosphere. We had booked and arrived a little earlier than planned, but the staff kindly let us sit at our table early. We opted for the afternoon tea which was delicious and so filling! We had to take some of our cake home. Only slight confusion was I think an error in the booking system. We added a note to say that one of us was veggie. But the note received by Biddies was completely different - a member of staff asked us if we had ‘opted for that specific table in particular? As they didn’t normally book it out’. I said sorry and that I had no idea what they meant, we’d never visited this branch of Biddies before and hence wouldn’t request a particular table, we’d never been inside 😅
Mel H — Google review
A wonderfully charming tea house, in a lovely old building, old-fashioned decor and instrumental, and of instrumental music reminiscent of the early 1900s, to set you at ease. I stopped in while in Aylsham to ride the historic railway, visiting from abroad. I was told by a guide to try the local lavender specialties, so I had the lavender scones, which were brilliant. I also had a peppermint tea, iced! It was an overbearingly hot day, so it was brilliant to hear that they could make any of their teas iced for me! The service was friendly and prompt. What a lovely little spot. Plenty of space, spread across two main rooms, a cosy nook, and an outdoor courtyard in the back.

This unique cafe is a must if you love flavoured teas. They have a huge range of teas, served with beautiful teacups and teapots. The cheese scones are quite honestly the best I've ever had, and the prices were extremely good. This cafe is beautifully decorated and has a lovely vibe to it. I'll definitely be returning on my next visit to Aylsham.

Hands down the best Coronation Chicken I have ever tasted! Amazing afternoon tea, scrumptious carrot cake and super service!
Pete E — Google review
Really great vibe! Lovely atmosphere, and the afternoon tea was a delight!! Thick doorstep sandwiches, and the lavender scone served with lemon curd and fresh cream was the best scone ive ever had!!.. One little criticism, please serve proper ham on the bone in the sandwiches, instead of budget supermarket thin stuff! Definitely worth a visit!
Debbie R — Google review
Popped in as we were in Aylsham to visit the Country Market. Seated quickly in comfy chairs with a steamer trunk in between us as a table with 30's & 40's music being piped in behind us, a beautiful setting. There are traditional tables and courtyard seating too. Be warned, it gets busy at lunch time, so there may be a wait, but it is worth it. We ordered a cheese and onion chutney finger sandwich which came with a salad, pickle and slaw, I had a sausage roll (biggest I've seen) which came with salad and pickle too. My wife had a coke, but I selected their black tea and black cherry blend which came in a generous 4+ cup pot. Both the food and the tea were excellent, well presented, generous and very tasty. Staff were lovely, very helpful and happy to answer any questions, even run off their feet and dealing with some rude customers, they did it with a smile. Overall a great experience for the princely sum of £17, although I did end up spending a bit more to take away a bag of the excellent tea blend.
Brummie S — Google review
To the lovely young man who served us today. What a star. He was very busy and very polite and even though serving managed to get us a table cleared as we were in a hurry to catch the Bure Train to Wroxham. Once sat down we decided that we didn’t have time to stop so he made us up a carry out with cakes and a sausage roll. All with serviettes and wooden knives etc so we could eat on our return and it really was not expensive at all. Brilliant service and lovely food. Well done. I will be back.
