Fortress
Imposing 16th-century castle occupying a tiny rocky island, accessible by boat for tours & events.
Excellent for a morning visit. We sailed from Plougasnou. The boat was busy but there was plenty of room. The initial 5 minute introduction to the castle was only in French but we were given a guide book in English and after the intro could simply explore. Most of the notices and boards in the fort were in both French and English so even with our limited French we didn't miss anything. Would definitely recommend.
Andrew K — Google review
The fort itself is pretty cool, definitely worth a visit. I found the history to be even more exciting though! 4/5 stars because there is not that much to see/do.
Andrew J — Google review
We enjoyed the boat tour and appreciated that the guide book had English wording. The trip could be enhanced by providing some basic commentary in English. On arrival at the fort we found ourselves in a big crowd listening to the tour guide speak French. We didn't want to leave as it felt rude. It would have helped if the tour guide let us know in English that the non French speakers were free to leave and to explore the fort. Overall we enjoyed the trip.
LPD M — Google review
Excellent organization of the visit from the start, with a straightforward, informative website, to picking up our tickets, to the boat shuttle. Knowledgeable staff too - and don't forget the gift shop. Quick, the last bell is ringing - don't miss your trip back to the mainland!
Gerald L — Google review
A beautifully restored coastal fort with much effort put into informing and interpreting its usage and siting, along with the history of the site. A great little self guided tour - the information boards are in both French and English - thankyou! Its worth visiting the gift shop for some unique presents too.
Erik B — Google review
Very interesting but do check the times of the boat trips as soon as you arrive on your holiday, we nearly missed out due to high tides.

Château du Taureau

Château du Taureau, an old Vauban fortress turned museum, offers a magnificent visit on the open sea. The well-restored fortress provides a superb view from its summit and can be reached by a pleasant and exotic boat crossing. Upon arrival, guides provide interesting and lively commentary about the castle's history. The magnificently renovated castle in Morlaix Bay allows visitors to admire the extensive restoration work through explanatory panels at the entrance.

Visitors to Château du Taureau can enjoy a magnificent experience exploring this well-restored fortress situated in the open sea, offering breathtaking views from its summit. The journey begins with a pleasant and exotic 30-minute boat ride from the port of Diben in Plougasnou or a shorter 15-minute ride from Carantec, both featuring interesting and lively commentary from knowledgeable guides, such as Manon and Léo. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a brief yet engaging explanation of the castle’s history, delivered by a friendly guide, often with amusing anecdotes. The informative panels at the entrance further detail the extensive restoration work done on the castle. Visitors then have approximately one hour for a self-guided tour to explore the site at their own pace, admire the impressive architecture, and take in the stunning views of Morlaix Bay from the terrace. The return journey is marked by the sound of bells indicating the boat's departure, providing a gentle reminder to wrap up the visit. Though the one-hour timeframe for the self-guided tour may feel a bit rushed for some, the experience remains enjoyable overall. The boat itself is equipped with toilets, a convenience not available at the castle, and features a small souvenir shop for mementos of the trip. Booking in advance is recommended to secure a spot for this memorable journey. Despite the brevity of the visit, the castle’s charm and the well-narrated commentary make it a worthwhile and enriching experience.

The castle is magnificently renovated and you can see the extent of the work at the entrance with the explanatory panels. (Translated by Google) I think we're not the only ones to have been fooled by this beach. We thought we would find a nice family beach. With a place to relax and eat some sweet treats, what was our surprise. I warn you that this beach is by no means a family beach. It is a very pretty place but difficult to access. A huge slope, steep, and not really possible to access this beach. The view of the Bull Castle remains magnificent and for a painter or photographer sublime. But be careful if you are with family, I recommend Kellen beach instead. (Original) Je crois que nous ne sommes pas les seuls a nous être fait avoir par cette plage. Cairn of Barnenez is a remarkable megalithic mausoleum located on the Barnenez Peninsula, offering stunning views of the Bay of Morlaix. Constructed between 4500 and 3900 BC, this ancient site consists of an elongated stone mound with step sides housing 11 burial chambers. While only one chamber is accessible through the original passage, an excavation has exposed several others.
The oldest burial mound in Europe is massive and sets on a hillside with the most amazing views. There is a small gift shop but the real attraction is the solitude os the location and the realization that this burial site is older than the Egyptian pyramids by a millennium
David D — Google review
The Barnenez cairn is interesting; it's older than the pyramids of Egypt. To truly appreciate it, take a close look. Discovered only about fifty years ago, it's still in good condition. The site also offers a beautiful view of the sea. Historically, it dates back to around 4850 BC, making it one of the oldest megalithic monuments in Europe. Parking is free, but there is an entrance fee. To better understand its significance, consider taking the guided tour.
Johan S — Google review
Interesting and in a wonderful place. Bit pricey perhaps as there's not a huge lot to do once you've walked round. A very small museum exhibit.
Helen A — Google review
Incredible to think this cairn was built nearly 6,000 years ago the cairn is huge - what must have people thought back then! Thankfully saved in the 1950/60s it is a powerful and spiritual place to visit, particularly with the mist rolling in to create a real atmosphere. It was about 6€ to enter, there is a small exhibition which is worth spending time in. Signage was in French, English and German. Allow for between 1-2 hours for your visit.
SJ M — Google review
Impressive historical landmark! Worth a visit but the visit isn’t for long. Only negative point might be the price of 7€ but as long as it goes towards the Cairn it is ok.
Nicolas E — Google review
It's not worth the entrance fee. In essence, a pile of stones. 10 minutes and you have seen everything and read everything. If you studied this at university, then okay, but if you are on a day outing with the kids. It's not worth it. Rather, do the 9 km hiking trail.
Motorhome Q — Google review
Amazing cairn in a stunning location. It’s huge, the builders who established it and contributed to it were really skilled architects. Its contours follow the curve of the hill it is built on, it is beautiful as well as clever. Each stone is in the right place, and there are a lot of them! The tour guide was too didactic for our taste and gave too many details for us, we left the tour after 10 minutes of standing in the same spot…we wanted shorter explanations as we were going around the cairn. It is definitely a place you should visit.
Marie-Helene T — Google review
This site is interesting, but really only needs about 10-15 minutes to get everything out of it. Expensive for what it is and overall disappointing. Would not go back.

The Musée Maritime de Carantec is a delightful gem that has recently reopened in its new location, maintaining the intimate charm that makes it special. This small yet captivating museum showcases an array of exhibits in modern, well-lit display cases, enhanced by engaging audiovisual presentations. Visitors can explore fascinating local history and the story of clandestine voyages to England during World War II through the Sibiril network, featuring the impressive Requin sailing ship on display.

Book in advance, they always seem to be full in high season. For a good reason, their crepes are very nice, and their staff too. Not expensive and very good. Relaxed ambience. Ok so this place is a must visit in Carantec We absolutely loved the Proprietor..he couldn’t have made us feel more welcome. An engaging character with a great personality…helped us hugely with the menu and was happy to work with our kids with good humour and fun. As you walk in the kitchen is on your left and everything is cooked to order. The staff are so professional and polite. We came here on our last day in Carantec and wished we had discovered it sooner.

Trades now as Ty Crep'itante. Excellent hospitality. Warm and welcoming atmosphere. Great food , catering for vegetarians without fuss. Apart from crepes fresh local Mussels are a specialty I would not hesitate to recommend. A big surprise was to be handed a menu in English which saved a lot of Google lens work. 😀

The food was decent. However, our steak came well done - we had ordered medium. Service was ok.

Lovely atmosphere, great service, and great food. Only disappointment today was no crêpes available, but other food was delicious.

Terrible service.Totally forgot that we were outside even though they were serving at the next outside table along from us. Eventually managed to get some drinks but when we asked for a menu we were told we could not eat outside even though 3 other tables were eating outside. Very bizarre!

We were refused on account of having kids. Avoid these sour faced folks. Wonderful creperie just down the road will welcome you warmly.

Great place! Friendly staff, amazing food - we had very nice mussels and oysters. And on top of all the prices are quite moderate!

Went here for a drink, not busy at all. Ordered 2 drinks, one came in immediately, the smoothie took some time. The smoothie is absolutely trash, smells like seafood and is very watery, we tried the coconut, pineapple and banana, there is only tasteless coconut shreds in it and idk what else they did to mess up this smoothie. So definitely dont come here for the drinks. Expensive too.

Terrible service, not nice atmosphere. You feel like you are a nuisance even if you are supposed to be a paying customer. Worst of the experience: being charged 3.90 for a glass of warm milk for a baby, while hearing one of the waiters telling a younger one preparing it: "we charge for everything here". Even the young waiter was shocked. Avoid, they don't want to see you anyway.

The worst Muscles I’ve ever had. Overcooked in a watery sauce the likes I’ve never seen before. Asked for a Coke Zero for my diabetic wife but was given a none coke cola full sugar version, only realised this when we went to the supermarket later that day and saw it on the shelf. On a positive note the fries and my friends pizza were good.

We used this restaurant on many occasions when on holiday's Food, service is all gone down hill Portions are very small on the dish of the day ,you will need to go somewhere after wards for a snack. pizza are ok .the staff Seem to pick and choose who comes in if they are busy,I think the owner and the staff have lost any interest they had in the restaurant . very expensive for what you get , avoid if possible 😞

The food was very tasty. The place is nice, near the sea and if you want to stay inside, it is very cozy and beautiful. Staff was very kind and super professional. We liked everything about it.

A great location for lunch or evening meal, particularly when the weather is suitable for outdoor dining. Very helpful friendly staff that will tolerate some mangled French! The mussels were excellent.

We were greated by an incredibly grumpy waitress. The first thing she said was there's no crepes or ice cream. Ok, we thought, no problem as we want to order a main meal for lunch. There were 6 of us & she sat us a table for 4. When we asked for a bigger table we were told no, despite there being many empty ones. When we ordered we were told that it was not a good idea to order a pizza as they have 25 to make and it could take an hour! So we ordered muscles and fish of the day. So we waited and waited... People came in and sat down and their muscles and pizza came. We also saw them serve ice cream and crepes; funny that! When we asked them where our food was, the just said it's coming! We had 4 very hungry young children who had to watch everyone eat around us and wonder where their food was. We walked out!
