Nestled in the picturesque town of Buitrago del Lozoya, the Castle of Buitrago is a stunning medieval fortress that dates back to the 15th century. Originally constructed by the Mendoza family, this impressive structure features seven towers and fortified walls that offer breathtaking views over the Lozoya River. The castle showcases Gothic Mudejar architecture and was built atop earlier fortifications from the Muslim era.
Buitrago del Lozoya is a Spanish town on the Lozoya River near Madrid. It’s known for its well-preserved Moorish town walls. The 15th-century Castle of Buitrago del Lozoya was built in the Islamic-Spanish Mudéjar style. The Church of Santa María del Castillo has an ornate coffered ceiling. The Picasso Museum–Eugenio Arias Collection includes the artist’s ceramics and drawings donated by his friend, a local barber.

The Castle of Buitrago del Loyoza is a medieval fortress originally built in the 15th century by the Mendoza family. The castle was constructed over earlier fortifications constructed during the period of Muslim occupation and was constructed in the Gothic Mudéjar style. The castle fell into disuse in the 17th century and later received damage during the Spanish Civil war in the 20th century. The castle is now in a state of ruin but is open for visitors. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit to Buitrago and the castle itself even if it is a little small. We were able to climb the old castle wall for just a couple of euros which while not hugely extensive was fun and gave us views of the rest of the old town. All up, it took us a couple of hours to explore the castle wall, walk around the river following the muralla (old city wall) and then climb the hill on the other side of the river. While the historic centre of Buitrago is only small, there are a couple of restaurants along the main street so visiting the town could make for a nice (shorter) day trip from Madrid or a fun stopover.

The castle is closed for restoration works. There's no date for the opening of it. You can walk all around the castle but it's entrance is closed.

The Museum Picasso Eugenio Arias' Collection is a hidden gem located north of the city. Although I'm not a huge fan of Picasso, I found the personal aspects of the artworks displayed here intriguing. These pieces were given as gifts to a close friend over several years, adding a unique connection to the art. It's definitely worth more recognition.
I'm not really that big a fan of Picasso, but the personal aspects of the works shown here - the fact that they're gifts given over the course of many years to a close friend - helped me connect to the art. A hidden gem to the north of the big city that deserves more recognition. I strongly recommend this place.
Ruro — Google review
It is an art museum that was built in the basement of the city hall in 1985 based on works donated by Eugenio Arias Herranz, a barber and close friend of Picasso. Picasso gave various works of art to his friends as proof of his affection. Although it is a small collection of 65 pieces, it is well organized. Another thing to note is that this is the first art museum created and opened by the Community of Madrid.

Nestled in the charming town of Buitrago del Lozoya, the Puente del Arrabal stands as a testament to medieval architecture and history. This ancient stone bridge, believed to have Mudejar origins, was constructed in the late 14th or early 15th century to connect the village with the old Arrabal del Andarrio. Nestled in the charming town of Buitrago del Lozoya, the Iglesia de Santa María del Castillo stands as a magnificent testament to architectural beauty, blending Gothic and Renaissance styles. Erected in the 14th century atop an earlier temple's remnants, this church boasts an impressive tower that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As you wander through its hallowed halls, you'll encounter exquisite religious artifacts and intricate decorative elements that narrate the rich historical tapestry of this enchanting village.
Well preserved historical site, castle, and church. We felt safe climbing the tower stairs. Well worth a visit.

Worth a visit as part of a day in the town which has fine walls you can walk, in a glorious setting, many fine bars and a free museum containing art by Picasso. You need a euro to get electric lights on in the church.

Go to the tower!! This is a beautiful church from the 16th century. Very well preserved with beautiful religious artifacts and incredible architecture. In the left side of the church there's a door that you can go through that leads to the top of the tower. It cost 1€ to go up, there's a torniquete where you can put 1€ coin, and only 1 euro coin will work. Recommend going up, just be careful because the bells still play and they are kinda loud!!

(Translated by Google) The Church of Santa María del Castillo is the only parish church currently preserved of the four that existed in the Spanish town of Buitrago del Lozoya in the 16th century. It was built within the walled enclosure, very close to the castle. Construction of the church began in the early 14th century, probably on the site of an old mosque. It was completed in 1321, although it was restructured in the 15th century, as evidenced by the windows and two doorways in the Hispano-Flemish style, which was widespread in the late Middle Ages in the northern part of the Community of Madrid. The nave was originally Gothic in style, covered with a ribbed vault, the origins of which can still be seen today on the bare facades of its interior. The apse has a polygonal shape and is of better workmanship than the rest of the nave, as it was built with well-worked granite ashlars, in contrast to the rest of the nave, which was made with unworked ashlars. In 1936, Republican commandos burned the entire complex, resulting in the loss of the church's altarpieces, paintings, and carvings. The fire also caused the collapse of the Gothic roof, which was transformed into a Neo-Mudejar style following the restoration carried out in 1982. It is worth noting that the coffered ceiling covering the main altar dates back to the 15th century, having come from the former Hospital of San Salvador. All the restoration work was carried out by students of the San Francisco de Asís School-Workshop, which teaches various trades to boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 16.

Muralla y Torre del Reloj, located in the town of Buitrago de Lozoya, are essential sites to visit. The medieval wall, with its origins dating back to the Arab era, was built to defend against Christian intrusions into Al-Andalus territory. The Clock Tower is an integral part of this wall and gets its name from the clock at its highest point.
It is a wall that you can walk along the Rio Lozoya. It is not crowded with people so it is good for walking. From the highest point, you can see the Buitrago del Lozoya at a glance.

Natacha ( — Google review
The "Muralla" preservation is ok, but auxiliary cables on the floor and walls for lighting kill the magic if any. Ugly Mannequing as soldiers on the wall seem they have been taken from a cloths store. 2 Euros for going upstairs the wall and if you visit the curch 1 Euro for the light and 1 euro for going the bell house upstairs.

(Translated by Google) Well, I'm sorry to have an unfavorable opinion of this place. We entered around 2:00 p.m. and we finished around 4:00 p.m. And not precisely because the after-dinner meal lasted longer, but because we spent more time waiting for both the drink and the food to be brought to us than eating. There was a total lack of coordination among the few staff serving, being outnumbered by the number of diners, I don't know if also by the lack of professional expertise. One had to constantly remind the waiter about the menu or the drink. In the kitchen I could only observe one cook, totally overwhelmed. And it didn't just happen to us, three-quarters of the same thing happened to the surrounding tables, taking it stoically. It coincided that a medieval market was held in the town with a large influx of people, and therefore a large number of them going to the different restaurants in the town, but these things must be planned. As for the food, the entrail was good, with its charcoal-smoked flavor, but the charcoal-smoked chicken, nothing at all, an opinion that coincides with the lady at the next table. There was such a lack of coordination that the person who was dedicated to collecting money did not know what we had consumed, asking us what table number we ate at. As I already mentioned, from the faces of the diners at the surrounding tables, they were not at all satisfied with the service. €22 for a one-dish menu, it didn't seem cheap to me, but especially for the disastrous service. And the only 2 waiters there made the best of their faces and the greatest apologies. In the attached photos, the chosen dishes, at €22 each, plus drink and dessert. Let everyone draw their own conclusions.

We will definitely return.

(Translated by Google) A great place in Buitrago. We ordered a sandwich and a burger. The sandwich was huge and very good. The burger was also quite large, and the meat was very good. The girl who served us was super nice, and the price was super cheap. I'll keep this place in mind for when we go on another trip. I recommend it!

(Translated by Google) The food is good, we came because we saw Latin food in the pictures but we didn't see anything similar at the bar, otherwise it's good, yes there is only one bar to sit at, very little space, the chairs in the plaza are from the bar next door, it leaves something to be desired in terms of cleanliness.

Asador Las Murallas is a charming restaurant located in Buitrago del Lozoya, offering a cozy terrace and a homey atmosphere. The menu features traditional homemade dishes that highlight the flavors of the Sierra de Madrid, including options like potatoes, squid, artichokes, burrata, chorizo sausage, chops, and sirloin.
We have just finished the most delicious lunch. Every course was full of flavour and well presented. My husband and son had the lamb, which was beautifully cooked. The fish was perfect. All the staff are welcoming and polite. Will definitely be returning.

There is a rustic vibe in the restaurant. They gave us bread and no bread dished the waiter just left the bread on the table. We did have big plates to share starters so we used those as bread dishes. There was also no whole grain bread. The fish was tasty and grilled nicely. I expected potatoes or a little more salad with it.

Tarta de queso was good. They should improve their croquetas but it was still edible. Calamares a la andaluza was definitely fried more than it should be. Probably I won’t come back because I expect calamares to be cooked accordingly

A bit of a wait to sit in the terrace, but good quality and OK prices. Attentive staff. Good selection of wines.

Had a reservation but the waiter was extremely rude and unwelcoming. We left as we didnt want to be served a meal in a beautiful place from a rude waiter. Went to parilla which is next door and the waiters were singing, smiling and dancing the entire time. Made our lunch worth it!

Shocking slow service and very average food for the price. Ensalada de Rusa was really awful

We came here after cheking in google the reviews of all restaurants in town. This one, surprisely has the best rate, however our impression was not that good. First of all, waiters neither were attentive nor kind. Besides, they were extremelly slow taking the order and providing the check. As far as the food, I deem that was our mistake asking for "chuletón"(this is typical from North regions of Spain, specially Basque Country), they recommended to ask Chuletón...well, was tasteless, from young calf and with no maturation, of course, considering that chuletón was for 40€/kg... In the north, paying the same you got triple quality "txuletón". We also tried asparagus and were very yummy. Best of this restaurant is its location and shades to cover from the sun.

El Andarrio is a charming restaurant located on Calle del Andarrio, known for its homemade cuisine and family-friendly atmosphere. The bright yellow dining room with an elaborate clay oven offers stunning views while serving a variety of traditional dishes made with high-quality ingredients. From delicious homemade meatballs to hearty Madrid-style tripe and flavorful Rioja-style cod, the menu showcases the best of local specialties.
Stopped here for a quick dinner on the way to Madrid especially as traffic was forecast ahead. Server was very apologetic that they were out of the bread for sandwiches. No problem, we were happy with the pork (which came with local bread chunks) which was delicious. Easy and plenty of parking. Would stop again.

Dropped off motorway into this beautiful little town for quick lunch. Traditional Spanish type bar/cafe with a large dining room & accomodation. Ate in bar - basic meals very well cooked & very pleasant staff. Planning a return visit as town has fabulous attractions.

Not overly impressed. The bread was not fresh so when toasted was rock hard. The cost of 2 x coffee and toast, plus one orange juice came to 8€.

Unbelievable.. Arrived here around 4pm in the afternoon. As we walked to the door, the employees of the place had the key in the door. Slammed the door shut & locked it!! Terrible service all round.

The man who served us was rude and wasn't welcoming. We were not sure what he was trying to achieve for his business. If there was a zero star option we would select that.
