If you only have 1 day to spend in Hunawihr, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Hunawihr is a tiny Alsatian wine village on the Route des Vins, known for its colorful half-timbered houses set among vineyards. Its hilltop fortified church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, overlooking the village and surrounding vines, is a distinctive landmark and reflects the region’s turbulent history. Hunawihr is classified among “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France,” highlighting its preserved architecture and setting. Nearby attractions include a stork and otter reintroduction center and a butterfly garden, adding family-friendly stops to a scenic wine-country visit.
With favorites like Butterfly Gardens, Chez Suzel, and NaturOparC (eg Reintroduction Center), we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like O'berge du Parc and Chez Suzel so you can get the best taste of Hunawihr while you’re here. Park
NaturOparC, located in Alsace, is a well-designed park that offers an enjoyable experience for both adults and children. The park is not very large but features easily accessible paths suitable for all visitors. One of the highlights of the park is the free-roaming storks, providing a tranquil and cool environment to observe these majestic birds.
This place was a joy to come to. This park was so beautiful, and very fun. The kids obstacle course was very fun for my child. And the animals were so cute! We LOVED the storks, and the nursery. I would definitely recommend!
Larissa C — Google review
It is a nice park in a beautiful secluded area. However, definitely needs a lot of improvement. Starting with the general cleaning of the area Small ponds are so smelly, you can see there is no regular cleaning whatsoever, poor creatures :( We couldn't see most of the animals due to poor setting arrangements. The snack area is very limited in options and the waiting time is huge on a busy day.Very slow service. As a pro we loved the storks and their matting dancings. The small aquarium with so many friendly fish kois that actually let you pet them. Lovely donkey which came to the fence to say hi. Small ducklings were very cute. Big parking lot.
Anca T — Google review
Cute parc. Educates about local fauna protection, you will find pedagogical games and activities for children, explaining things about animals, nature and nature protection. We pove that parc with my kids (4,6), we go yearly and always enjoy it for different things. Some things could use a little refresh but the kids always enjoy seeing the animals. Not to miss, the tower in the spring: it allows you to see storks from uo close and you have a stunning 360 view of the area! (It is now in works, no idea when its back in use for public)
Marjorie Z — Google review
This is a small private animal park featuring ducks, swans, hamsters, otters, raccoons, nutrias, donkeys, goats, white storks, and various freshwater fish housed in several aquariums. The park's mission is to protect local wildlife in distress, making admission not just a source of entertainment but also a contribution to a meaningful cause. Although it is not a formal zoological garden and the variety of animals is limited—with some signs of wear and tear—the park offers a child-friendly environment, pleasant presentations, a nice canteen with fair prices and engaging activities. These features can easily keep a family entertained for an entire day, from 11:00 to 16:45. That’s the true charm of this park.
Petros P — Google review
Visited because storks are my favorite bird and I am so happy I did. The stork area specifically is so well done and educational. I also watched the feeding of the baby, the worker did the presentation only in French which I don't speak but I didn't mind because it was still enjoyable to observe. The variety of other animals isn't very exotic but it was all presented well and the park is beautiful to walk around in. I spent 3 hours at the park because I took my time but you can definitely see everything in under 2 hours. Some things are also written in English but most are not. Google lens is an easy fix to that.
Naiomi I — Google review
This little park is only a 15 minute drive from Colmar and is well worth the visit. We enjoyed seeing the storks, otters, hamsters and coypu as we wandered around the rustic pathways. There were a couple of newly hatched birds in one of the nurseries and there we’re also lots of animations around the park throughout the day. A lovely little park to spend an hour or two - children of all ages will enjoy the visit - my husband and I certainly did.
Annette K — Google review
A nice place to see animals and nature, but it's quite small and I was expecting to feel in nature and no it's a human built attraction and I would have preferred a more basic and natural environment
Romain R — Google review
If you like to see animals in their natural habitat, and you're looking to spend a great day for an affordable price, you'll love this park. The walks are perfect for families with smaller children.

Butterfly Gardens, also known as the Exotic Butterfly Gardens of Hunawihr, is a delightful conservatory filled with various plants, flowers, and animals. The main attraction is the greenhouse where colorful butterflies fly freely amidst beautiful orchids and terrariums. Visitors can also explore exceptional botanical gardens housing over a hundred exotic butterflies from different continents along with diverse flora, bees, and ants.
This is a surprising and beautiful experience! We were on the Kutzig White Wine Route Bus and this was our first stop. We arrived early, so there were no wine tastings to be had! Gorgeous tropical plants and butterflies flitting all around. It was magical.
Izzie B — Google review
It is small, very small place. If you are not stuck there to photo every butterfly, the visit will take 10-15 min max. We went through in 30 min, with kids and making photo of almost every butterfly. It is a nice place, for sure, with a collection of orchids and some tropical plants. It is very, very warm inside. Be ready to strip down to a t-shirt. It is no barrier area, you can go in with stroller. The negative thing: it was VERY dirty on the parking and on the road to the garden. Yes, it was a rainy day, but parking place is the worst I ever saw in Alsace. Naked earth with puddles, so at the end everything in your car will be dirty. Considering the entrance fee, I would expect better maintenance of the place.
Tatiana E — Google review
I absolutely love the place and visit whenever I am in the area. It's not a huge place, but you can definitely spend some time admiring the butterflies, or just sit for a while and watch them fluttering around you, or sitting down on you! The plants are lovely, too, and I find it very relaxing being there. The information provided is useful, and when it is not a cloudy October day, the outside area is very nice as well.
MystOfOblivion — Google review
Small butterfly garden. Lovely collection of species. Easely accessible with prams/wheelchairs. Just be careful not to flatten the butterflies on the ground. You can go round a couple times as well. You can easely park if you go early.
David B — Google review
Beautiful butterfly garden! Well kept and stocked. Actual butterflies to see depend on time of visit of course. But they were abundant when we were end of July. Entrance fee is reasonable to cheap but don't expect to spend more than am hour here. It is very warm inside the greenhouse so perhaps save this for a rainy or cloudy day. Great to take children here as the animals are largely fearless and fly all around you or sit on perches with some sugar or honey.
Christian P — Google review
Its a wonderful place. So many beautiful butterflies 🦋♥️👌

Dont wear bright, floral attire unless you want butterflies to mistake you for food! Was rather small, but all kinds of butterflies were present & the environment was rather nice. Just a bit hot, so dress appropriately!

Domaine François & Fils Schwach is a charming winery offering an enjoyable wine tasting experience. The staff is friendly and accommodating, providing insights into the unique aromas and flavors of their wines. Visitors can opt for a private tasting with knowledgeable guides who offer tours as well. Additionally, the B&B accommodation provides a comfortable stay with sparkling clean facilities and excellent champagnes to sample.
We had booked via email for 9/8/2022, we tasted lots of wines, from dry to very sweet and we also visited the cellars, where we had the opportunity to learn a few thing about the wine making. A beautiful dog accompanied us during the tour. The staff was very polite. We generally had a great time and we strongly recommend this family winery for a visit.
Georgina A — Google review
The best vineyard in France. The people who work there are some of the loveliest you will ever meet and the quality of the wine is second to none. I would highly recommend their Muscat as a personal favourite and their Rose No. 3 is unique and delicious. You do not want to miss this place.
Jeannot G — Google review
Absolutely loved the tour and tasting! Went on a hot spring day and the tour was educational and delightful. The wines were out of this world and beyond delicious!! Would go back in a heartbeat and ask for Sasha the dog :)

Delicious wines, well priced. Very friendly reception - you can arrive without booking for a tasting of 6 wines for €9. Or you can book an appointment for a guided winery tour plus tasting for €14

Wonder knowledge host Julita- she really loves what she does and it shows. Highly recommend 🤩🍾
Stephanie G — Google review
We had a really nice time at the Domaine François &a Fils Schwach. They have very nice wines (I would recommend the Muscat that has an unique aroma and taste). The staff was really friendly and nice! My suggestion is: you could revert the tasting/tasting + visit price into consumption of wines. Considering many other wineries do not charge for the tasting, at least half of the value, I would say, could be converted.
Jose M — Google review
Private Tasting with the very Kind Julita, did her best with giving us a tasting and a tour along with the French group. The tour costs a little extra (I think 14€ with the tasting). The experience lasted around 1,5h. If it’s not busy you can take your time with the wine tasting , you can taste 6 wines. The prices of the wines are really okay! Most of them cost 10-15€ on average which Is a good price. For the time, I sent an email after the reservation on booking and they informed me when we should be coming: 10/10 would recommend
M M — Google review
Great winery, friendly and very helpful. We had booked a winery tour of Domain Schwach including a tasting in the end. It was great insight in the process of wine making and always very informative during the presentation. Riesling and Cremant wine were our personal favourites and we were able to buy a many great wines to take with us home.

On Saturday, at around 17:30, I visited Domaine Mittnacht Frères. Initially, there was nobody present in the shop. However, upon ringing the reception bell, I was able to contact the owner. She requested a brief wait as she wasn't on-site but assured me of her imminent arrival. Shortly thereafter, she personally greeted me and unlocked the shop's doors. I had the pleasure of sampling numerous wines and ultimately purchased a few bottles.
TOP wines, great atmo and nice host

Visited the shop on Saturday around 17:30. Nobody was present, but after ringing the reception bell, we had contact with the owner. She asked us to wait a couple of minutes as she was not present but would come directly. After a couple of minutes we were greeted by her and she opened the shop. We tasted a lot of wines and purchased a couple of bottles. She didn't seem to mind it all to have to come to the shop eventhough she was not there, so ring the bell! You should really try the unique blend of Pinot Noir (Alsace) and Syrah (Bandol), which is not part of the Appelation and tasted amazing! Payment is possible by cash and card.

Nestled in the charming village of Hunawihr, O'berge du Parc is a delightful culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. This restaurant boasts a clean and inviting atmosphere, complemented by a friendly and welcoming staff who are eager to assist you. The menu features exquisite local cuisine with beautifully presented dishes, including options for children. On sunny days, guests can enjoy their meals on the lovely shaded terrace while soaking in breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards.
So, did a hike, fell upon this restaurant, not booked. Enquired about Gluten Free options. Great service, the food was served promptly. I had the beef entrecôte, with pepper sauce, vert salad and fries. All of which when asked for were ok’d as GF options. Has to be one of the best meals I’ve had in this area….enjoy this restaurant even if you don’t need GF options I am hopeful you won’t be disappointed. Many thanks for the lovely lunch O’berge du Parc.

The staff was so helpful and knowledgeable about pairing our food to the delicious wines from the region. They were so friendly and welcoming. There are no words to say how delicious the food was!!! I couldn’t recommend this restaurant enough!

In a "ski chalet" atmosphere, the restaurant still serves late in the afternoon great local typical Flammenkuche, with a nice varierty on the menu. Service is really kind, and it's easy to access and park as well. Desserts seemed really good even though I didn't feel hungry anymore after a Flammenkuche :)

Adjacent to the vineyard with a view of the three Castles. Lively atmosphere. Excellent Ceasar Chicken Trete Flambee and Spatzel. We also enjoyed the creme brulee and blueberry tart for dessert. Wonderful find.

Very nice welcome and we were well looked after. This is a typical alsacien restaurant with great local food and a nice family atmosphere. If you are in the area I recommend it. Has anice terrace outside which should be great in summer.

Chez Suzel is a charming restaurant that offers a great selection of local cuisine. The seating options both indoors and outdoors are delightful, and the staff is friendly and accommodating, with good English skills. While the kids' menu may be limited, there are delicious options like Fleischnacka, a pancake roulade with minced meat and roasted potatoes that's perfect for sharing.
Excellent authentic food and service. The service staff were top notch and for me the potato cakes with salad were the best. Location also a plus with a nice outside terrace with lots of shade.

It was good but classic, nothing was really worth a detour. If you want a small bite why not but otherwise not worth it
