Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Established in 1874, Zoo Basel is the oldest zoo in Switzerland and a must-visit attraction. Known as "Zolli" by locals, it houses a diverse range of animals including gorillas, snow leopards, lions, elephants, giraffes, and chimpanzees. The well-maintained park offers a pleasant summer stroll while the animal houses and vivarium are popular during winter.
A compact zoo by size but full of animals. It's way easier to get through this than the one in Zurich if you're with small kids. The aquarium is gorgeous!
B D — Google review
This zoo os great with kids. The surounding are made with so many details in mind, everything is green when you walk around. My kids and I loved it. There is great food stations too, amany animals. Especially the aquarium part is super big and nice too. The only downside, its in the middle of the city of Basel, a little hard to get too.
Simon — Google review
Love love this place- I went pretty late (4-6pm). Although I skipped the crowds, some of the animals were already in their enclosures (not in exhibit), but it didn’t detract from my joy of being there. Loved the vivarium, farm animals, snow leopard, flamingos, meerkats, and penguins. I would have loved to be able to see the new hippo baby though :(.
Karen D — Google review
Zoo was good for a city zoo. I don't want to spoil it so only posted a miniscule amount of photos. I loved going into the bird house. It had some levels to it so find the elevator or stairs. Spent from just after 9am until 4pm.
Fran B — Google review
It is very convenient. With stroller we could go through the whole Zoo. We were lucky we could see all the animals. They have huge space in the restaurant & also banks everywhere to sit.
Diana D — Google review
A very nice zoo – not too big, not too small. There’s a great variety of animals, and even on rainy days you can enjoy several indoor areas. We always love coming here!
Lika B — Google review
It's a very strange and beautiful place. They let the penguins walk freely in the zoo. However, the path was very clean. The staff there were very kind. Everything was good. I was there for 6 hours and I didn't want to leave at all. It was very enjoyable to be with the animals. I wish they were free in the wild, but the animals are having fun there too. The animals are definitely happy there. I recommend you to go there to enjoy being with nature.
M K — Google review
What a lovely zoo- lots to see with a variety of animals. I particularly liked the giraffe enclosure. There was also a lovely coffee shop and gift shop near the entrance.

Art museum
Museums
Kunstmuseum Basel, also known as the Fine Art Museum, is a renowned art institution with an extensive collection spanning from the 15th to the 21st century. It features works by Holbein and other regional artists from different periods. The museum is part of Basel's rich cultural scene, which includes various privately funded museums and galleries. Visitors can explore diverse experiences such as the Pharmacy Museum, Cartoon Museum, and Paper Mill Museum.
Honestly, an amazing art museum in Basel. I would say this is my favorite museum that I went to while visiting this beautiful city and would highly recommend to any museum or art fan to do the same. They have tons of classic works by world famous artists as well as artists that I’ve never heard of. The works spans many countries and many generations and it’s a huge wealth of knowledge and beauty to see in one visit. It would be easy to spend over four hours here but we spent about 2 1/2 hours really soaking in everything. It’s three main floors divided into different time periods and art styles and on the bottom floor they have a really nice café where we enjoyed some lattes before heading out into the rain. Pricing is fair and the building is large and beautiful. No bags or umbrellas are allowed, but they have lockers right at the front entrance for free for you to place your valuables. They are also really lenient about photography just as long as you don’t use flash. The entire staff was very polite and I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Basel to check this place out.
Zan L — Google review
Wow! We wish we had had more time to see all the amazing art! Quiet and clean. Lockers for backpacks- easy to use. Put this on your to do list when you are in Basel. Give yourself 3 hours at least.
Allie B — Google review
This museum is truly the treasure of Switzerland, imagine MoMA & The Met combined in one address. As an active art lover and collector, I have not spent too much time in this museum before unfortunately, as I had only been there for events during Art Basel week. Finally I had the chance to come back to Basel and dedicate some time for a thorough visit and viewing last week, and it was for nearly 6 hours, and every moment was well spent. The museums have two buildings connected by an underground tunnel, with vast permanent collections from Renaissance & Early Modern (15th-16th c.) with strong holdings from the Upper Rhine: Hans Holbein the Younger, the Amerbach Cabinet origins; 17th-18th Centuries, Flemish and Dutch masters (like Rubens, Rembrandt); 19th Century of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism. Simply impressive collections from Monet, Cézanne, Manet, Van Gogh. Swiss artists too, such as Ferdinand Hodler. Then the 20th Century including major movement coverage: Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Constructivism with Important works from artists: Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian etc. The collections from this era at this museum impressed me the most this time! The Post Modern / contemporary collections are also worthy investigating, from Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Helen Frankenthaler, Miriam Cahn, Dan Flavin, Kara Walker, Bruce Nauman, Calder and more. There are plenty of rooms to wonder with comfortable sofas in and out the exhibition halls, so you could really take time to experience the art, and it is never too crowded with too many phone cameras or noises around. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, very refreshing especially compared with other major museums around the world. Highly recommend it for art enthusiasts, families and it is a must visit when in Basel.
Andrew P — Google review
The paintings were good but to be honest they were not great! It felt mediaeval and repeated with the paintings and the work structures. The museum has an old museum and the new and of the two, I think the new section is good. Because of the reviews and recommendations on Google, one gets eager and also excited to visit this museum but for me it was just an ordinary museum with no great paintings on display. However the most humane and exceptional part of the museum visit are the people who manage the ticket counters and offices. They are kind, gracious and always always ready to help and assist. I would remember the visit to the most gracious lady sitting at the ticket counter, who asked me to check for the Basel card and advised me to call the hotel for the digital copy to save me some money. Also at the same time a couple offering me to share their card with me, even asking me if they can pay half the amount for me. That was generous of them, I assured them that money is not the issue but the kind lady just wanted to save my money. I got the card through my mail in about 15 minutes and more than me the lady at the counter was happy. That's the beauty of Basel and its people! I took the tour and was happy to not miss it because it was more than a tour for me. The building is amazingly attractive and thoughtfully built. The surrounding area is just like another place within the old World charm of that area, just a few minutes away from the munster!
Neemi T — Google review
This was the most humiliating and hostile museum experience I have ever had. An employee wrongly accused me of taking a photo, which I was not, then followed me upstairs. He walked back and forth with another staff member, laughing and staring at me. Later, he deliberately waited for me, locked eyes, and stood there until I spoke. When I asked why he was staring, we had a full conversation where he mocked me, laughed at me, and bullied me instead of acting professionally. It felt like he wanted to provoke me into a confrontation. I am a quiet, respectful visitor, and it felt like he singled me out as an easy person to intimidate. Instead of enjoying the art, I was harassed until I left the museum in tears. For such an expensive ticket, this treatment is completely unacceptable. A museum should be a place of inspiration and safety, not surveillance, intimidation, and humiliation. I strongly recommend avoiding this museum if you expect basic respect as a visitor.
Mariah — Google review
It's nice. Not outstanding. The collection is a bit of a random mix and it's curated in a strange way. Not that much art really, but I did like the medieval art they had.
Shera S — Google review
I’ve been traveling around Europe for quite a while now and have been in different museums and this by far was the worse I’ve been to. There are so much restrictions, a lot of policing and most of the time you are being looked at as though you plan to steal. The art inside it is not even worth the entrance fee. But as always, go ahead and experience it for yourself because art is very subjective. The area around it is beautiful. You can sit and enjoy a couple of drinks or go by the water/ river/ beach. It’s worth discovering the area
Cindy D — Google review
A very enjoyable visit! The collection is extensive, with plenty of fascinating works to explore and appreciate. The museum is well-curated and offers a great cultural experience in Basel. My only small drawback would be the adult ticket price of 25 CHF and some restrictions inside the museum, which felt a bit limiting. Overall, though, it’s a must-see for art lovers.

Tinguely-Brunnen

Fountain
Tinguely-Brunnen, created in 1977 by Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, is a captivating fusion of sculptural machines and water. Situated on the site of the old city theatre company's stage, this modern landmark features ten iron figures powered by low-voltage current, seemingly playing in the shallow fountain lined with black asphalt. The mechanical figures are in constant motion and interaction with each other, reminiscent of the performers who once graced the theater stage.
5 stars Quirky, kinetic, and completely captivating. The Tinguely Fountain is one of those spots that’s both whimsical and thought-provoking—a perfect blend of art and motion right in the heart of Basel. I stumbled on it by chance and ended up staying far longer than expected, just watching the sculptures come to life. A must-see if you appreciate creativity with a playful twist. Bonus: it’s totally free and photogenic in any season.
Jennifer F — Google review
A Splash of Genius and Madness – Tinguely Fountain If Salvador Dalí and Rube Goldberg had teamed up to build a fountain after a night out in Basel, this might be the result. Tinguely Fountain isn’t your average “stand-and-stare” kind of fountain. Nope. It’s a bunch of metal creatures, built from what looks like leftover parts from an old theater backstage, dancing and splashing around like they’re alive—and possibly a little tipsy. Created by the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely in the late 1970s (clearly ahead of his time… or out of it), this kinetic fountain moves, squirts, spins, wobbles, and somehow perfectly captures the chaotic joy of creativity. Each piece has its own rhythm, like a rusty ballet with water jets. I loved how playful and unpredictable it was—like the fountain has a sense of humor. Don’t expect a peaceful moment of reflection here; expect to smile, get splashed, and maybe question the laws of physics. Located right in front of the Basel Theater, it’s basically the city’s most artistic water fight. A must-see if you enjoy quirky, clever art that doesn’t take itself too seriously (and neither should you). 💧 Pro tip: Go when it’s sunny. Watching water fly through the air in golden light is magical. Just don’t stand too close unless you brought a towel.
Ihsan S — Google review
Fantastic art installion! The sculptures move in rhythmic harmony, spraying water with wondrous abandon. Brutally mechanical and comforting in one experience. A must see when visiting Basel.
Andrew P — Google review
It's ingenious. We visited on a very hot day so it was nice to sit I a shaded area and enjoy the mechanics as well as the coolness of the water close to us.

Brilliant fountain in the centre of Basel comprising moving sculptures which squirt water designed by Jean Tinguely in 1977. Well worth a visit!
John J — Google review
The Tinguely Fountain is a delightful blend of art and engineering. These kinetic sculptures resembles dancers, each moving in its own unique way. I love it when the sun hits just right and you keep seeing rainbows forming all over the fountain, I think the best time to visit is around 5pm+ when the sun is hanging low!

A classic spot beloved by locals, offering a delightful selection of open sandwiches. The variety of toppings ranges from timeless options like salmon and tuna to uniquely Swiss choices such as Ziggeuner and tartare. For many, this place holds a nostalgic charm, having been around seemingly forever. Simply take a seat, pick a few sandwiches at random, and savor the experience. It’s also a great spot to people-watch, with busy streets providing the perfect backdrop.

STAY@Basel SBB offers a comfortable and budget-friendly experience with rooms featuring shared bathrooms and a fully-equipped kitchen. The easy digital check-in and check-out process adds convenience to the perfect location near Basel SBB. While the larger capsules are relatively clean, some guests found limited airflow inside, causing it to get hot and stuffy. Despite receiving numerous emails from booking to check-out, they provided clear expectations for the accommodation.
Very good experience at the Hyve capsule hotel 👍✨️ The receptionist was friendly and helped me with the check in even thought I arrived late. Location very close to the train station and very convenient. It is in a chill vibe neighborhood. I found the room and showers, toilets to be clean. I recommend !

Stayed here for 4 nights during artbasel in a capsule, for the price and for just needing a clean bed at night, it was a nice option. Its about 3 mins to the train station and 40 mins walking to the messeplatz (or 10 with the street car, no changes). . wifi was fast and worked well. For the price you can't find anything better in Basel during the fair. The capsules are surprisingly quiet (but I could imagine if you get a loud person in the rooms shared spaces or sleeping above you, it could be really unpleasant). There isn't much air circulation in the capsule when closed as others have stated, so I slept at night with the door open which was fine. The room was quiet and until morning there was no issues with parties or sounds. My major negative is that the door to the room and capsules all make a bunch of beeping sounds when opened, which can be obnoxious when people are coming in and out a bunch in short periods during the morning or night and you want to sleep. It would be great if the sound could be turned off/down. All and all I would stay again. I found the staff fast to address any issues and the common spaces were well kept and clean

Stayed here for 2 nights in a woman dorm room. The staff was super friendly. They definitely want you to have a good time. They help with whatever you want. You can also use the kitchen and just eat your food in the lobby. They are super friendly. Would go back here again, because of the staff mostly. It's located near the trainstation, so that's amazing!

we were in the forest themed room. it’s actually in the cellar of the building. in the room was the fuse box for the whole building and other technical installations behind a sort of wardrobe door. they all made noise. the air in the capsules got really bad after a short while. blinds of the window were broken etc. staff is nice and helpful. but the place is just badly done and worn out. we got moved to another room in the hyve hotel just next door for our second night….whoch wasn’t better unfortunately
Dominic M — Google review
I give my opinion for the capsule rooms. More than expected, super comfy, big space and no claustrophobic. All the building, including the bathrooms, toilets and rooms are super super clean. The check in is very easy. Modern place, with a lot of activities, kitchen available, laundry... 100% good. 2 minutes walking from the station, good restaurants around. I can't say nothinn wrong because it's excellent place. I will come back for sure.

Super nice hostel! Awesome location. 5 min walk from main train station. They had a well equipped and spacious kitchen. I had a studio apartment with only 35 per night. Definitely better than usual cheap hotel. The people in the reception was nice and helpful. Clean room, clean toilet. Can not ask more!

Fantastic place to stay. Would highly recommend it. Only stayed for one night but was very enjoyable. Had a slight mishap with the plug sockets as they weren't working to begin with but the receptionist soon resolved it after I reported it. Shared showers and bathrooms are very clean and look fantastic. Very spacious and they provide shower gel if you forget yours as well as body lotion for after your shower. Check out not until 12pm so that's good to let you have a lie in or go out but they also let you keep your bags in the locked room for baggage when you check out and want to wander around Basel until you leave. Highly recommended and enjoyable.

Church
The Basler Münster, also known as Basel Minster, is a stunning Gothic-style Protestant cathedral with origins dating back to the 9th century. Its red sandstone walls, colorful roof tiles, and twin towers make it an iconic landmark in Basel. The cathedral's construction spanned several centuries and features a mix of Romantic and Gothic styles. Destroyed in an earthquake in 1356, the impressive structure was rebuilt and converted into a Reformed Protestant Church.
Fantastic views from the top of Basel Munster! It costs 6 CHF to go to the top and there is an opportunity to get magnificent views out at different levels as well as a two towers! The cathedral itself is beautiful and I would recommend a walk around before heading up the towers!
Ben S — Google review
Definitely worth the visit, the building is beautifully crafted. If you walk behind the building you will have an excellent view overlooking the River. Lots of people were having picnics and relaxing here.
Mrs P — Google review
Solo travelers are not allowed to climb the towers, for suicide prevention reasons. You can find another tourist and ask to accompany them, but without the employee seeing this. Don't let them know you are strangers. There's a small fee to climb the towers and it's well worth it. Basel Minster was built between the 11th and 16th centuries in a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. After the 1356 earthquake, it was significantly rebuilt incorporating Gothic elements such as pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and large stained-glass windows. The cathedral is made of red sandstone and is notable for its two main towers, St. George’s and St. Martin’s, and its patterned tile roof. The Minster served as the Catholic cathedral until the Reformation in 1529, after which it became a Reformed Protestant church. The Gallus Gate at Basel Minster is the oldest Romanesque figure portal in the German-speaking world, built around 1185. In the tympanum is Christ as Judge of the World, accompanied by Peter and a donor figure, while the lintel below shows the Parable of the Ten Virgins. During the Reformation in Basel (1529), iconoclasm took place at Basel Minster as part of the city’s shift from Catholicism to Protestantism. Religious images, statues, and altars that were seen as idolatrous were removed or destroyed. The interior today remains relatively bare compared to its original medieval design.
Kent W — Google review
It was originally built in the 1000’s as a Roman Catholic Cathedral and became a Protestant church. There’s no fee to get in the church but there’s a fee to go up the top. Behind the church is the Rhine River.

Don’t miss the chance to reach the top of the church. While climbing, it might seem like you’ve reached the end, but be sure to check—there’s a good chance there’s a way to go even higher."
A N — Google review
It was google recommended church in the area so I had to visit it. I was mesmerized by the walk that led to this church for its beauty and grace. There were many things to see around and on both sides of the road. A museum, the beautiful Rhine river, cute shops, cafes and restaurants and the location of the Church is heavenly. Inside of the Church is a typical European style church, old enough but maintained. The nearby area is a dream walk. Just 4 minutes from this church is the famous kunstmuseaum that no one misses on the trip to Basel.
Neemi T — Google review
Had a free walk around then spotted people paying to go up the towers. We tried this for a small charge and it's well worth the steep steps to go to the 3 levels available. Bit tight at times depending on how many people go up but numbers are controlled.

Spalentor is a majestic 15th-century gateway that stands as one of the three remaining structures from the ancient walls of the city. It is located in Basel, a city known for its significance in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, with major companies like Novartis and Hoffmann-La Roche being among Switzerland's largest employers.
I love how the gate gives you a glimpse straight into Basel’s Old Town, it's honestly so cute and full of charm. The architecture is stunning, and the little details on the façade make it feel like a storybook entrance. A lovely stop for history lovers and wanderers alike!
Yvette T — Google review
I stopped by Spalentor in Basel during the day, and it was pretty neat! The gate’s old and solid, with red walls and round towers—you can tell it was built to last. There weren’t too many people, not too few either—just chill, no crowd. I stood there, checking it out, thinking about how it used to guard the city. You can feel the history. Plus, the streets around it are nice for a walk. Worth a look in Basel!

The Basel Gate, built in the 13th century, is one of the three city gates that have survived to the present day. It is regarded as the most beautiful city gate in Switzerland. As you pass through the gate toward the Old Town, you can truly feel the authentic medieval atmosphere — narrow stone streets, ancient façades, and a quiet charm that takes you back in time. The surrounding buildings complement the gate perfectly, creating a harmonious scene that reflects Basel’s rich architectural heritage.

Cool history S part of the old town. Definitely worth the visit. There are a few cafes close by which is helpful.

Very nice and safe hotel in a wonderful city. Breakfast is a great and delicious option. It is not very close to the restaurant area of town, but there are many beautiful things to see near there. Don't miss the incredible botanic garden right across the street at the university.

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Mittlere Brücke, also known as Middle Bridge, is a historic stone bridge in Basel, Switzerland. It has been an iconic sight since its construction in 1226 and offers stunning views of the river and surrounding architecture. The bridge was initially built as a crucial link for traders traveling through the Gotthard Pass. Over time, it became a symbol of the city's rich history.
We came to visit Basel from Germany for one day. The city is very beautiful, but driving around is quite problematic. There are so many cyclists everywhere, and it creates a lot of stress. Everything in Basel felt expensive to us. I had heard before that Switzerland is expensive, and it’s true. Healthy food is only available in markets and such. Restaurants are extremely expensive and open very late. We were there on a Friday and walked a lot just to find a Turkish restaurant. When we got there, they told us that dinner is served at 5 PM and asked us to come back then. The person also said that most places in Basel are like this. We ended up just having a coffee and leaving. So honestly, we wandered around all day hungry. Later, we had a beef sausage at a market — we paid 8 francs for it. It tasted so bad. Unfortunately, we were really disappointed with the food, and everything was extremely expensive.
Özlem C — Google review
Lovely bridge to cross with river Rhine below. It is so different to see people floating here with their waterproof swim bags. It looked awesome in the blazing summer heat.
Mrs P — Google review
Beautiful historic bridge with great views of both the medieval city and the Rhine. You can take a water taxi and see more of the city. Safe to walk on the bridge while cars are driving due to the sidewalk on either end of the bridge.
Debbie M — Google review
11/10 Always a delight to walk or run here, I’ve been there several times a day and admire the beauty around, specially during the sunrise and sunset. It’s a must visit to take in the beauty and it’s a landmark of the city that is engraved in the souvenirs. Next to the bridge there are several coffee place to hang out. In summer you can also swim or just sit around the beach and on stairs.

The middle Rhine River bridge, connects the old and new town area, was built from 1903 to 1905, to replace the old and original wooden bridge. Not just because it's historical landmark value, but in the middle of the bridge, there's a little sign with several faces and lines of words, which states " Basel commemorates the people who were accused, persecuted, tortured, and killed for witchcraft in earlier centuries". And they also want to remind everyone that it's very important to always appreciate different opinions.

Museum Tinguely in Basel, Switzerland, is a tribute to the renowned Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. The museum boasts the world's largest collection of Tinguely's art, featuring a permanent exhibition showcasing his work over four decades. Additionally, it hosts temporary exhibitions that not only highlight Tinguely's influence but also shed light on other modern artists who inspired him. This museum offers a unique and impressive experience for art enthusiasts visiting Basel.
The Tinguely Museum is truly a wondrous place. The building itself is a masterpiece, towering over the river. You may have read about the works online or seen some of them. But only when you step inside and stand before the machines, watching their whirring and creaking, and seeing the intense sense of patchwork from the scrap metal, can you truly appreciate their wonder. It's a barren, dilapidated, yet vibrant work of art, brimming with wondrous imagination.

Might be too slow for the kids today but it was nice to slow down soo how imagination can create art out of trash. I recently visited Museum Tinguely in Basel, and it was an absolute delight! The museum’s playful energy and interactive exhibits make it stand out from traditional art museums. Jean Tinguely’s kinetic sculptures are full of motion, sound, and humor — they truly come to life right before your eyes. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the riverside location adds a lovely atmosphere. Whether you’re an art lover or just curious, Museum Tinguely is a fun, inspiring experience that sparks creativity in visitors of all ages. Highly recommended!

Very cool museum. The temporary exhibit was very cool (and slightly off-putting) and I'd love to see more of the artists they bring in.
Maeve J — Google review
Well it was a nice museum, something out of the ordinary. There were many art pieces like paintings and other art pieces and at the end where more machines but there where times when the machine would move and other moments not. But overall a good experience!
Michal Z — Google review
Was very good, the fixed exhibition about Tinguely is very interesting, good explanatory text, good shop as well, many creations of his on display. Staff speak English fluently, no problem communicating as a tourist. Very recommended 👏👏

We visited the Museum Tinguely in Basel and really enjoyed it. The lady on the front desk was incredibly helpful and kindly stored our luggage while we explored, which made things so much easier. The museum itself is fascinating; full of quirky, inventive kinetic artworks that are both playful and thought-provoking. It’s one of those places where you can’t help but smile as you walk around. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Basel.

Restaurant Beyeler in the Park is a historic establishment that has been serving guests since 1856. Located in Riehen, Switzerland, it is one of the oldest restaurants in the area and is situated within a former farmhouse and barn. The restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring local specialties and international cuisine. With its rich history and picturesque setting, Restaurant Beyeler in the Park provides visitors with an authentic dining experience.
Wonderful food. Outdoor dining. The greenhouse where the veggies are grown is a an arms length away. Very fresh. Wonderful presentation and flavors. A little pricy, but worth it.

The food was exceptional! Yes, service can be a bit slow and portions are on the smaller side. But the ambiance and atmosphere and the quality of the food is extremely good! Highly recommended!
Carl F — Google review
Really just to sit in the garden of the fantastic Beyler Foundation. It took a while for anyone to notice I was there before I even got a table. The special, a vitello tonnato was more like a starter. There were maybe 4 tiny slices of veal and the sauce did not emulsify and instead bits of egg from what should have been like a tuna mayonnaise. And it was 34 CHF! I went to the bathroom because I waited so long for the check and when it looked like I was going to walk out they finally came to ask me to pay. Go elsewhere to actually eat. Maybe just to have a coffee and dessert to sit in the garden.
Christine L — Google review
I went there for a drink and a table on the outside was immediately offered. There is a great park and the Beyeler mudeum is in walking distance around - really a wonderful place. The restaurant inside looks very nice and I am sure that the food will meet your expectations.
Marc H — Google review
Lovely location adjacent to the Fondation Beyeler art museum. Seasonal offerings from a limited menu, which primarily caters to the diverse tastes of museumgoers (and doesn’t offer a lot of vegetarian/vegan options). Quality is good. The staff is friendly and attentive, yet appears a tad bit disorganized at times.
Marcus D — Google review
I never write reviews but the bad service here needs to be highlighted so that future customers have fair warning. I can't even comment about whether the food was any good as no one came to take our order. After 25 minutes of asking and waving at the staff, they all said that the dark haired waitress would come take our order, and then finally even the dark haired waitress herself said she would come take our order, but nothing happened - she just slowly continued chatting with other tables. Even people who had arrived after us were served before us. Fed up, and hungry, we left and ate elsewhere. We are regular visitors to the Beyeler Gallery but we will not attempt to eat at this place again. Such a shame and a very poor reflection on the otherwise excellent art gallery next door, but they simply don't seem to care about customer service at all.
Belinda P — Google review
I visited your restaurant on the 3rd of September, the waitress was extremely rude and made me pay twice, claiming that the first payment did not go through, even though I showed her the successful payment in my banking app. I have sent you two emails regarding the matter and you have ignored me. Based on this experience I would very much advice to avoid this restaurant!

The Fondation Beyeler is an impressive art gallery that was once a private collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler, former art dealers. Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, the building boasts a spacious and bright open-plan layout. The exhibits are diverse, featuring 19th- and 20th-century works by famous artists like Picasso and Rothko in contrast with sculptures by Miro and Max Ernst as well as tribal figures from Oceania.
I love this museum — I’m a huge fan! The place is beautiful, the exhibitions are interesting and really well done, the staff is friendly, and the whole space is lovely. I highly recommend it — it’s a must if you’re visiting Basel. I saw the Northern Lights exhibit five times because it was just that amazing!
Georgette S — Google review
Interesting collection of modern and contemporary art in a beautiful building by Renzo Piano. The museum is surrounded by a beautiful park, which also features a café. Unfortunately, given the museum's small size, the collection is never displayed in its entirety, but rather gradually.
Davide C — Google review
When we visited end of August, the exhibition was fairly small. Half the building was not accessible, Perhaps in preparation of the next exhibition? Still liked the place a lot. Beautiful building, Nice artworks, decent amount of Picasso's including sculpture. So if you are in the neighbourhood, worth a visit!
Vincent V — Google review
I planned to visit Beyer to see their impressionist collection. When I bought the ticket and checked in I found none present! I asked the staff and was informed the collection was on loan to a museum, hence replaced with a temporary exhibit. The temporary exhibit was nice but it was not what I came to see. I hope the foundation updates their website and improve the information adding transparency around what is on display. The building itself is also a design masterpiece so worth visiting

A truly stunning foundation nestled in a beautiful and serene location. The collection of art pieces is both impressive and thoughtfully curated, offering an inspiring experience for visitors of all ages. On the lower level, there’s an exciting interactive section featuring VR glasses and a kind of hologram installation — modern, playful, and definitely worth trying out. Outside, a charming pond filled with blooming water lilies adds a romantic touch to the atmosphere. The surrounding garden is ideal for families looking to unwind, and there’s also a cozy little café, although seating is a bit limited. Overall, a wonderful place to visit — peaceful, enriching, and full of surprises. I’m already looking forward to coming back. Highly recommended!

Initial check-in was awful, very unfriendly staff. We ended up taking 2 tours with great guides. The architecture tour missed some great buildings formerly available. More fences and restricted access. It was definitely better 10 years ago. The Nike exhibit was, eh. Seemed like only a tiny portion of collection was available, and chairs I wanted to experience weren't available in Vitra House. The main building was under construction, so I missed the best one. The website isn't updated, so there was no mention of this, nor did the website list the duration of the tours. I was disappointed.

Beautiful first European Commission by Frank Ghery. The building is not very big but it’s an asymmetrical jewel that changes every few steps. Don’t miss out the opportunity to check the interior and visit one of the interesting design exhibitions that it holds.

My life is complete! Visiting the Vitra Design Museum was an absolute bucket list and it delivered!! An abolsutely sensational showcase of interior design and furniture. Just make sure you remember to take a mat BEFORE climbing up the slide tower (unlike us)! The only problem is that it was impossible to get an Uber back to our hotel in Basel, and it was very difficult getting a taxi back! You're best to ask the staff to assist with this (I wished we did).
Kristoff L — Google review
The Vitra Design Museum has some impressive buildings designed by renowned architects, but beyond that, I found the museum itself to be underwhelming. The gift shop's prices felt steep for the items offered, which seemed more focused on selling the prestige of the museum rather than showcasing truly unique products.

The Vitra Design Museum is a stunning destination for anyone passionate about architecture and design. The entire site is a visual and intellectual delight, showcasing decades of Vitra’s innovation and creativity. Walking through the museum and its surrounding buildings is like stepping into a living archive of design history, constantly evolving with new ideas and exhibitions. It’s inspiring to see how Vitra continues to push boundaries while honoring its rich legacy.

The Basel Historical Museum - Barfuesserkirche is a part of the larger museum complex in Basel, Switzerland. It houses a diverse range of exhibits including paintings, cathedral treasures, furniture, and archaeology. The collection of antiquities has a rich history dating back to early Basel and is now housed in the Antikenmuseum at St. Alban-Graben 5/7.
There are many museums in the beautiful city of Basel, but the Basel Historical Museum is worth a visit, whether in terms of the architectural form, its collections, or the history of Basel it records. It is in the center of Basel, so no matter which direction you start from, there is a very convenient transportation to bring you here. It is not large in scale, but it has a large collection of collections, and it carries a lot of information about the city's past from the source of Basel's history to today. It is a good place to kill time. If you have a Basel Tourist Card, you can also enjoy half price, about 7.5 Swiss francs.

A Hidden Gem Among City History Museums While I confess to having a soft spot for city history museums, the Basel Historical Museum proved to be an unexpected delight. Even better, admission is offered at half price with the BaselCard — an excellent incentive to explore this cultural treasure. Housed within a former church, the museum’s main floor offers a serene and evocative backdrop for its impressive collection of religious art. Particularly captivating are the three meticulously crafted city models of Basel, spanning from ancient times to the present — a real treat for urban history enthusiasts. Though all informational panels are in German, visitors are thoughtfully guided at the ticket counter to access detailed descriptions in English and French via a QR code, with free Wi-Fi available throughout the museum — a welcome gesture for international guests. The true highlight, however, lies in the basement: an extraordinary trove of historical wonders. From ornate jewelry and period furniture to curious artifacts, weapons, and full-scale reconstructions of Gothic interiors, the collection is both diverse and beautifully presented. It is well worth allowing ample time to explore this captivating subterranean gallery in its entirety.

The cozy ambiance and friendly staff add to the overall appeal of this classic pub.
After many years living in Riehen, I finally visited Sängerstübli. It is absolutely wonderful. Nice old-style atmosphere, great service, and excellent food. Of special note is the option of small portions. Almost all of their main dishes offer a half-portion (see photo). For us, that was perfect. We had room for some of the excellent desserts. My dish was pasta with salmon and was very good. We will definitely make this a regular restaurant. Prices are "Swiss-normal".

A great traditional restaurant tucked away cosily on a side street in Riehen. The setting is fantastic, with the old wooden framed building set on a quiet corner. There are seats inside in the old wooden panelled rooms and also a large terrace at the back where you can eat outside and soak up the atmosphere. The food is great with friendly service to match!

I make a point of visiting the Beyeler Fondation Museum every time I am in Basel. Two years ago, I discovered this restaurant within very easy walking distance from the museum. It turned out to exceed all my expectations. It has that Old Swiss decor and atmosphere, immediately creating a sense of cozy comfort. Moreover, the menu is extensive and the food is extraordinary. My "roesti pasteten" were sensational and I had to go back another day just to eat that dish again. I had the "mocha parfait flambe" for dessert and was over the moon with the flavors that just tickled my palate. The staff is caring, friendly and professional.

We stumbled upon this restaurant at the finish of a long walk in the forest and had a delightful experience. The menu made it clear that cordon Bleu was their main specialty provide many choices. We split the buffalo mozzarella caprese and a cordon Bleu and the table service was perfect splitting the dishes nicely. We left well fed. Danke für das gute essen.

Lovely room. Crisp white tablecloths with tables with ample space. Menu interesting but not to burdensome. The pasta which is home made was excellent it the sauces were better. Main course strong. Deserts other worldly. Don’t miss it.

Excellent restaurant. It was quite a surprise to find this gem at the very outskirts of Switzerland. The food is very tasty, and we were served very friendly and impeccably. They have a nice outdoor atmosphere and kind of like a Biergarten. All in all a great experience.

This is an excellent Restaurant! It stands rather alone on a road toward the German border and there are only a few parking spaces. However, once the close by pool is closed, you might find some parking there. However, you might consider to leave your car at home as they have a fantastic wine list! I can recommend the Amarone Casa vecchie! They have a very nice menu with many choices from the Italian kitchen but also daily dishes that are well worth trying. I had a sea food salad which was really fresh and tasty followed by a fantastic steak in mushroom sauce. My wife had a beef stake to die for! My new favourite place to get good meat in Basel (very close to 800°). They either serve inside or outside. The place outside is nice with many trees and a nice atmosphere with all the lights. The furniture is somewhat cheap and not quiet up to standard but the white cloths hide it pretty well. It seems like a great party location as there is plenty of room, also with roof if it rains. Now it can get a little chilly so bring warm clothes or ask for a blanket. The personnel is extremely friendly and very helpful. The inside looks very tidy all in white, although I did not spend a lot of time in there. You can see the kitchen from the garden and it looks super tidy and clean building a lot of trust and certainly shows in the excellent food served. Why did I not give 5 stars? I think it would need a little bit more class in the outside area and the tables could be a little bit further apart. But this is really complaining on a high standard. If you want to have a nice evening, this is a fantastic place to go!

Italian restaurant
Nestled in the historic Nordbahnhof of Basel, POMPEI Da Gianni is a charming Italian restaurant that truly celebrates the essence of Italian cuisine. With a delightful menu featuring an array of hearty meat dishes, fresh seafood, and mouthwatering pizzas, guests can savor their meals in a serene garden setting. The ambiance is warm and inviting, making it perfect for any dining occasion.
If you’re looking for an authentic Italian dining experience in Germany, Pompei Da Gianni is a must. From the moment you step into the beautifully renovated restaurant, the warm and inviting atmosphere sets the stage for a simply delightful meal. The menu showcases traditional Italian cuisine at its finest. Whether it’s the perfectly cooked pasta, flavorsome risotto, or the delicious wood-fired pizzas, each dish feels like a taste of Italy. Be sure to save room for the tiramisu… it’s the perfect sweet ending to a fantastic meal. The wine selection is thoughtfully curated, featuring excellent Italian choices to complement the menu. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable, always happy to recommend a pairing. With its combination of great food, excellent service, and a welcoming ambiance, Pompei Da Gianni offers a wonderful experience that will leave you eager to return. Highly recommended for a special night out or simply a great meal.

Pompei Da Gianni is located at Berliner Platz in Weil am Rhein. The menu is typical Italian - a mix of pasta, pizza and wine. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We were promptly shown our table on arrival. The service was quick and the staff were attentive. We called for a Glass of white wine each, a Spaghetti Aglio Olio pasta and a Cotto E Funghi pizza. The meal was delicious and warm. The portion size for the pasta could have been a bit larger. The meal cost 38€, which in my view, is great price performance ratio! Definitely give it a try when in Weil am Rhein.

I had the pleasure of dining at this delightful Italian restaurant, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. From the moment I walked in, the warm and inviting ambiance set the perfect mood for a memorable meal. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the food. Every dish we ordered was a culinary masterpiece, prepared with the utmost care and attention to detail. The pasta was perfectly al dente, and the sauces were rich and bursting with flavor. The pizza, cooked to perfection in a wood-fired oven, had a thin, crispy crust topped with fresh, high-quality ingredients that made each bite a true delight. What truly elevated the experience was the manager's impeccable hospitality and friendliness. From greeting each guest personally to ensuring everyone's needs were met, the manager went above and beyond to create a welcoming atmosphere. Their knowledge of the menu and recommendations were spot-on, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The service was attentive and efficient, but never rushed. We felt like valued guests, and the staff's passion for their cuisine and culture was evident in every interaction. Overall, this Italian restaurant was a fantastic find, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an authentic and memorable dining experience. The combination of outstanding food, warm ambiance, and a genuinely friendly manager makes this place a must-visit for Italian cuisine enthusiasts. I will definitely be returning to savor more of their delectable dishes in the future!
Johnny G — Google review
Mediocre Experience at Pompei Da Gianni, Weil am Rhein, Germany I visited Pompei Da Gianni in Weil am Rhein, Germany, in 2022, expecting to enjoy a classic Italian meal in a charming setting. Having heard some positive things about the restaurant, my expectations were set high, especially given that the town isn’t known for many dining options. Unfortunately, while the meal wasn’t outright bad, the overall experience was rather underwhelming and left much to be desired. From the service to the food, there were a number of areas where Pompei Da Gianni fell short of what I had hoped for. Atmosphere: Unremarkable and Lacking Charm Upon entering Pompei Da Gianni, I was greeted with a simple, straightforward setting that didn’t quite match the cozy, authentic Italian dining experience I had imagined. The decor felt dated, and the ambiance was neither particularly warm nor inviting. The lighting was too bright for a relaxed dinner, and the space felt a bit cramped, which made the overall environment less enjoyable. In an area like Weil am Rhein, where dining options are few, I had hoped for a more intimate and charming atmosphere to complement the Italian cuisine. Unfortunately, the restaurant lacked the vibrancy and comfort that would have elevated the overall experience. Service: Slow and Uninspired The service at Pompei Da Gianni was another area that left me disappointed. While the staff were polite, there was a noticeable lack of enthusiasm. Our server seemed disinterested and didn’t provide the personal touch or attentiveness that would make a meal feel special. There was also a long wait for our food, even though the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy, which led to some frustration. When the food did finally arrive, there was no acknowledgment or explanation from the staff about the dishes, which would have been a nice touch, especially for a first-time visitor. Food: Mediocre and Lacking Flavor As an Italian restaurant, I was hoping for a delicious and authentic meal, but what I received was only mediocre at best. I ordered a classic pizza, but the crust was soggy and the toppings lacked the freshness and quality I would expect from a well-established Italian eatery. The flavors were flat, and the pizza felt more like a mass-produced dish rather than a homemade creation. My companion ordered pasta, which was similarly underwhelming. The sauce lacked depth, and the pasta itself was overcooked, lacking the al dente texture that is a hallmark of good Italian cooking. While the portion sizes were decent, the overall quality of the food did not justify the prices. The dishes were plain and lacked the flair and attention to detail that should characterize a good Italian restaurant. It felt as though the kitchen was going through the motions rather than striving to deliver something memorable. Value for Money: Disappointing Given the quality of the food and the lackluster service, Pompei Da Gianni did not offer good value for money. For the prices charged, I expected a higher standard of dining in both the food and the overall experience. The meal wasn’t terrible, but it certainly wasn’t worth the cost, and I left feeling that there are many other places in the area where I could have had a more satisfying meal for a similar price. Conclusion: Not a Return Visit Although Pompei Da Gianni may have some loyal customers, my experience in 2022 was far from impressive. From the unremarkable atmosphere to the slow service and mediocre food, the restaurant didn’t live up to the expectations I had set. It’s possible that my visit was an off night for the restaurant, but given the competition in the area, I won’t be returning. While not a terrible experience, it was certainly a forgettable one, and I would recommend exploring other dining options in Weil am Rhein if you're looking for a more satisfying and authentic Italian meal.

During my time waiting at your McDonald's branch to pick up orders on behalf of customers, it seems that the staff often forget there is a customer waiting for their order. The customer pays for their order and expects to receive it promptly. As a delivery person, I should be treated with the same respect as a customer, but instead, the staff often And this contempt is constantly repeating, they see such selfish behavior as a right in themselves, after all, we are there to represent the customer and this happens especially when the female chefs are there, the lack of coordination and communication is too much and a very aggressive lady herself and other team members. I hope the owner of this place will prevent such behavior.

This small zoo is located in the city of Basel. It is a really beautiful place. I went here on a winter weekend morning. The city bus can go directly to the entrance of the zoo, so the transportation is very convenient. It was still early when I went, so there were not many people. The little animals were leisurely here, and the surrounding environment was also beautiful. In winter, the leaves in the park turned yellow, making everything covered with Christmas colors. There is a small river next to the park, and the gurgling water is very beautiful in the cold and lonely environment of winter.

Located in the picturesque Rhine River Valley of Switzerland, Basler Papiermühle - Schweizerisches Museum für Papier, Schrift und Druck is a must-visit tourist attraction. Housed in a medieval mill on a canal, this fully-operational museum offers hands-on workshops where visitors can make their own paper and take it home as a souvenir.
This is an extraordinary museum and a 'must' visit. Based in the old paper mill it charts the history of paper from making to printing to book binding etc. the staff were great helping to get hands on experience of many of the processes. One of the best visits we have done in a long time.

As a paper and book artist, I had to go visit this museum and I ended up learning new things and also really enjoyed the exhibits and activities. They have different paper related activities on each floor which are suitable for people of all ages. They go in depth about the history of paper and how paper is used around the world. The ticket is for the day and there are many things to do at the museum that you could easily spend half a day there.

Definitely will come back with our boys (they asked to come back the next day)

Art museum
Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig is a charming townhouse that hosts an impressive collection of decorative art from Ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome, and Etruria. The museum also delves into the captivating history of pharmacology with one of the world's largest collections of pharmaceutical artifacts.
It is an extraordinary museum and well worth a visit, particularly the Egyptian exhibit. The audioguide explains many items and is really helpful; unluckily we had problems hearing it  when we were in the Egyptian section as it is underground (both Wi-Fi and the phone connection didn't work): we had to come up the ramp and upload it there. There are some rare and exceptional items, so well preserved. Do not miss the dedication on a hand mirror gifted from a father to his daughter, that was so astonishing. A good bargain is the booklet "101 Masterpieces" which you can get for 5 fr. ; it's a piece of the museum that you can take home.

Not very big, quite interesting, especially the section dedicated to ancient Egypt. Other sections are dedicated to ancient Rome and ancient Greece. You need about 90 minutes to visit it, at least an hour.

Great museum in a historic building. Great use of the space. The woman at the ticket counter was very helpful and spoke English very well. She made sure we had any information we needed and understood that the top floors close earlier than the lower floors, so recommended we start there. Great advice!

A great museum and selection of different eras and the Egyptian one is super. The balance between What’s on display. The staff are nice. They also have a nice patio and gift shop. Definitely it’s a must visit when in Basel.
Andrew K — Google review
The Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig is a real gem for anyone fascinated by the ancient world. It is one of the very few museums in Switzerland devoted entirely to classical antiquity, and the quality of its collection is outstanding. From ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia to Greece, Etruria, and Rome, the museum offers a sweeping journey through thousands of years of human history and artistic achievement. What impressed me most is how beautifully the museum is curated. The galleries are not overwhelming in size, but each object is displayed with care and clarity, allowing visitors to take their time and truly appreciate the craftsmanship. Highlights include finely preserved Greek vases, delicate Etruscan jewelry, and Roman sculptures that still carry an astonishing sense of realism. The Egyptian collection is also captivating, with statues, sarcophagi, and small artifacts that provide a glimpse into daily life as well as ritual practices. The Sammlung Ludwig section complements the museum perfectly, adding remarkable pieces of classical art that were collected with a keen eye for quality. Together, the two collections feel both scholarly and accessible. Even if you don’t have a deep background in archaeology, the museum does an excellent job with explanations in multiple languages, making the stories behind the artifacts engaging and understandable. The setting itself is serene, with quiet galleries that allow for reflection. It feels more intimate than larger institutions like the British Museum, which means you can enjoy the treasures without crowds pressing around you. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and there is a pleasant café where you can pause and reflect on what you’ve seen.

The Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig is a place of great significance for archaeology and history. Here, you can truly feel the depth of ancient history and appreciate the importance of archaeology. The entrance fee was very reasonable, making it an accessible experience for visitors. Additionally, there is a bistro conveniently connected to the museum, offering a pleasant spot to relax. Visiting this museum in Basel, Switzerland, was an unforgettable experience.

I recently visited Schliessi with two friends and their little boy. Despite the beautiful view at the restaurant, our experience was far from pleasant. The waitress who approached us was incredibly rude and treated us very badly. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the waitress had a bad attitude. When we asked for recommendations, she brushed us off and seemed annoyed that we were asking questions. We left the restaurant feeling upset and disappointed. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. While the view is beautiful, the terrible service we received from the waitress ruined our experience. If you're looking for a pleasant dining experience in Lange Erlen, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Amazing experience, a restaurant in the woods, by the flowing river, in a clear starry night with all the warming fires outside. You need to sit outside even if it's a bit chilly, you need to taste the Metzgete choice of sausages, you need to try their amazing Ueli Swiss beer and you need to be handled by the very friendly and lovely staff as the king of the night. I repeat that this restaurant offers an amazing customer experience and that not only because of the food. One tip. You cannot drive over there with the car as it is truly in the woods and not allowed. Need either a bike ride or a 15 min walk from the nearest parking place in Eglise

Nestled in the heart of Basel, Switzerland, the Toy Worlds Museum Basel is a captivating attraction dedicated to the world of toys. Originally known as the Dollhouse Museum Basel, this enchanting museum boasts a vast collection of dolls, teddy bears, and miniature toy exhibits displayed across four floors. Established in 1996, it offers visitors a nostalgic journey through various eras and cultures with its charming exhibits and interactive displays.
We’ve got the Basel card which gave us 50% discount on adult tickets. Kids under 12yo - free admission. My son was given a tablet which gives an interactive child friendly explanation of the toy history etc. Clean washrooms, good floor layout, interactive areas - even for grownups. I enjoyed the lego animation. :) Overall, well worth your time and money.

This is an incredible museum with thousands of historical toys, especially Teddy bears, well worth to visit. The exhibition is displayed over several floors and it takes at least one hour to visit the museum. The free tablet that is given at the entrance is mainly aimed at children with interactive stories and characters from the exhibit talking. It got pretty noisy and crowded as we were visiting on a holiday plus there was an activity lab for children blocking part of the floor. Being interested in the historical part, we would have appreciated more background information about the history of the toys, the toy firms and even some of the items that were on display with more info to read on the windows, an audio guide or a pamphlet.

This is as good as it comes!! Price was low I pads are provided that can be connected to explanations of several points through out the displays were very well done. Several geographic points of origin were included. Gift shop has real collectible inventory, not junk. Staff was extremely helpful. Organization was superior and displays were excellent.

We really enjoyed ourselves. The miniature toys especially are interesting to look at with their minute detailing. It looks like for kids but as an adult, I can still recommend it.
Akshita K — Google review
The Museum has 4 interactive floors of marvelous vintage toys on display. When you receive your ticket, you will also receive a tablet to scan bar codes at several displays. The interactive journey can be in several languages, though after a while, you may be more interested in examining the impressive detail of the display. They also have free lockers for you to lock up your bags. The Museum can be missed if you dont speak German but Google maps stirred me to the right direction.

Nice museum for kids and adults, amazing collection of toys, teddy bears, dolls houses etc, my daughters enjoyed the interactive tour with some toys coming into life through an iPad.. and the arts and crafts station. The museum staff were just amazing! It was a great part of our trip to basel!

Delightful museum with a few very kind and friendly staff. Four floors, with SO much to see on each, with many intricate miniatures and doll’s houses mainly from the 1800s onwards. A great variety of dolls and plush teddy bears too, carefully and imaginatively arranged in large glass cases. More curious esoteric models on Floor 1, including a torture chamber…! For smaller folk there are fairly large play areas of Duplo, a very generous amount of Lego and Lego Technic on Floor 3. Tickets come with a free interactive tablet guide with strap to make it easier to carry. Visitors scan a QR code at various points and an entertaining VR animation appears with historical info on the piece, likely to be of interest to slightly older children. An overall thoughtfully presented museum. Benches dotted around each section, and the environment is very clean. Could have spent more than the two hours I had there quite easily. Note: The main shop at entrance is very small, and only sells a handful of miniatures. Plushes are also very modern, and not reminiscent of the styles in the museum. Second section tucked away had a minimum spend of 10 CHF (if I recall correctly) when paying by card, so remember to bring cash for postcards and small items.

Really good private museum of toys. Not very big. But still interesting. Most of the exposure are soft toys, or doll houses. And if the soft toys are, I would say "just normal tous", the doll houses are state of art. Great design, design and details. To make it interesting for the kids, they give tablets for kids, to watch some interesting stories about the exhibits.

The Museum of Cultures Basel, located in Switzerland, is an ethnographic museum with a diverse collection of global artifacts. Established in the 1840s, it houses significant collections from Europe, the South Pacific, Mesoamerica, Tibet and Bali. The museum's origins can be traced back to the city of Basel's Museum of Natural History and Ethnography. Over time, it has expanded its holdings through sponsorships and continuous acquisitions.
This is an unusual and excellent museum in the centre of Basel, near the cathedral. Each floor has a different exhibition with an interesting theme. The English language leaflets which explain the exhibits are essential reading to get the most from the exhibitions. I visited several times over the course of one week and it took me several hours to look and read my way around each floor. Each exhibition is thoughtful, creative and illuminating. Who would have thought I’d fine a collection of anchors so fascinating? Excellent place, and the attached bistro is great too!

Whilst there are some very cool items (in particular the façade of the ceremonial house of Papua New Guinea- the only object with English captions I saw in the whole museum)- I’m glad my friend and I went in for free in the last hour. There are NO English captions/explanations throughout and if I can read German correctly very few objects were before the 19th century. Besides the very cool ceremonial house, the building exterior is the best thing. I didn’t see how the arrangement on each floor made sense… but then again not a German speaker!

A wonderful museum about indigenous cultures from around the world. I was especially touched by the display of Indonesian and Oceanic cultures. I also want to mention that the staff of this museum are very friendly. There are lockers available. The collection is presented in a clear manner and the texts were well written.

Not what I expected. The first impression, seen from the outside: impressive, special! After entering, slowly, slowly...disappointment. Very large building, few exhibits. An exhibition dedicated to Asian culture and one to African culture. And that's it. No explanations in English. In maximum one hour you have seen everything.

A museum with different floors and in each different art historical well curated facts. The staff very helpful. For the wardrobe coin they give you one in a wooden material for free. Last floor people were relaxing and meditating quite interesting set up corner place with instructions.

A really interesting and informative Museum in the heart of Basel. It has several floors with different themes and exhibitions plus you get access to the museum of the Basel Carnival which is round the corner. The staff were very enthusiastic and engaging and we really enjoyed our visit

Fantastic ethnographic museum with an extensive collection of over 340000 items, considered one of the largest in Europe. Interestingly, the exhibits are not displayed by location or culture, but curated by topics. Covering four floors, one could easily spend half a day. Exit through the well done gift shop, that offers items related to current exhibits. Free lockers available. Wheelchair accessible.

I was here on May 1st (which is a holiday), and even though almost every other shop in the city was closed, thank god this museum wasn't. It was the most immersive and amazing experience, and I wish I could go back just to spend more time in the exhibitions. More specifically their current exhibition on the 3rd floor called 'Remembering and Forgetting', about how we as different cultures hold memories and communicate through different devices. It was eye-opening and so beautiful. The text for the exhibition was incredibly well written and took accountability for how some cultures (white and western culture) have erased and continues to erase the history and memory of indigenous cultures, by removing their culture and how to preserve that memory. The exhibition was very broad, raging from travel-souvenirs, to 1800-century tallies, to religious books, to how we talk about death and honouring the dead - because that is the essential in remembering; do we want to be remembered or set free? Regarding the opening hours of the museum - as I was there May 1st, it was actually a Monday (where the museum is closed normally), but because it was a holiday, it was open. Very strange, but worth noting.

Marktplatz

Town square
Marktplatz is home to the impressive Basel City Hall, also known as Rathaus. The original building was destroyed in an earthquake, but a new one dating back to the early 16th century now stands in its place. This signature red building is adorned with intricate decorative details, including captivating real and mythological chimeras. Located at Marktplatz, this square also features a striking tree, making it a picturesque spot for admiration and photography.

Unfortunately today at 12:50 there was no service. We had to go and ask for menus & had to again find the staff to pay. Such a shame! It’s not that they were really busy. The food was good, as usual. PS With Antonio we always have great service.

Best gluten free pizza I ate in Switzerland. Tasty gluten and gluten free pizzas. The service is great, Antonio always makes sure to help us get what we need and how we want it. Very flexible and very kind personnel.
Matjaž V — Google review
Probably the best glutenfree pizza I had in Switzerland, and better than most of them I had in Italy.. Good service, small but to the point wine selection to match your pizza. I can only recommend!
Sercan T — Google review
Has decent pizza, sometimes it is really tasty whilst sometimes it is far too oily. Melsa also offers other types of food such as, chicken nuggets, salads or even döner kebab. It generally serves good food, but it also depends on the day.
