Hathersage in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Hathersage, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Hathersage is a classic Peak District village, surrounded by gritstone edges and rolling moorland that make it popular for walking, climbing and cycling. Nearby Stanage Edge offers sweeping views and some of Britain’s best-known rock climbs, while gentle riverside paths run through the Hope Valley. The village has literary connections to Charlotte Brontë’s *Jane Eyre* and reputed links to the Robin Hood legend, reflected in local landmarks and St. Michael’s churchyard. Traditional pubs, stone cottages and easy rail access from Sheffield and Manchester make it an appealing base for exploring the wider national park.
With favorites like Hathersage Swimming Pool, Pool Cafe, and The George Restaurant, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Pool Cafe and Bank House Hathersage so you can get the best taste of Hathersage while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Bodies of Water
Ladybower Reservoir, located in the Upper Derwent Valley, is a popular destination for nature walks and hikes. The reservoir is surrounded by picturesque countryside and offers trails of varying difficulty levels, making it suitable for both leisurely strolls and challenging treks. Visitors can embark on a circular walk starting at the northern end of the reservoir, following footpaths along Derwent Reservoir and Howden Reservoir with views of the impressive Howden Dam.
A lovely reservoir you can part walk round. Lots of history, a shame we'll likely never see them over spilling again. Theres a paid car park opposite and road parking if you get there early!
Ilona R — Google review
Nice places to walk in the summer. Good car park but can be busy so get their early. Nice little cafe with friendly staff. Enjoyed a jacket potato at lunch time with a big helping of coleslaw and cheese. Few benches located just opposite the cafe where we sat and enjoy the food and drinks. The visitor center was sticky to find as listed as the visitor centre not the actual reservoir on maps. Recommended for amazing views of North Derbyshire.

Great walk. Take prams if you have small kids. Serene and peaceful.
Anila R — Google review
Did the lost village Trail and a lovely walk it is. There is a pathway all way around and therefore good for wheelchairs and prams. Also good route for cyclists and they facilitate to hire bikes. We parked at the Fairhomes carpark which had plenty of facilities ie: public toilets which were very clean. Hiring bikes and a kiosk to purchase food, drinks and ice creams etc The beautiful weather was an added bonus and we wasn’t too hot as most of the walk you are shaded with the trees etc

Lovely place.... Very quite and peaceful. Good for runners and cyclitis

Ladybower Reservoir is an amazing place to come for people of all ages and abilities. Even if you just drive through the area the views are stunning. The area is surrounded by some amazing walks around the hills for those that are more adventurous and some easier walks around the reservoir itself that are suitable for the less mobile. If you catch it right for parking, there are areas where you can sit and admire the views. The area is forever changing with the seasons and weather so each visit is different.
Scott F — Google review
Beautiful views, lovely walk, weather was brutal but that's what you get when you go out with no gloves on. Shame about the water been so low you couldn't see it fall into the overflows but I've seen it before so I wasn't too fussed. More than likely to go again 🙂
Mark M — Google review
Plenty of routes to take. I have done a different route every time. Win hill has fantastic 360° views. The forest looked magical & ancient. Apparently when there is a drought you can see the foundation of the village in the reservoir. Still plenty to see I haven't covered yet.

Stanage Edge is a breathtaking gritstone escarpment located in the Peak District National Park, known for its appeal to rock climbers and hikers. The area offers multiple routes for rock climbing enthusiasts and a nine-mile walking route from Hathersage to Stanage Edge, passing by the historic North Lees Hall. The stunning natural beauty of Stanage Edge provides open panoramas across the Dark Peak moorland and the Hope Valley, making it a popular spot for landscape photography.
Stanage Edge is a beautiful gritstone in the peak district. I just loved to climb up the peak and searched for a hidden cave. Experience the cave undergo and looking forward to beautiful nature makes you feel wow . Best place for climbing the peak. I recommend this place I visited with my twin girls and my husband, we enjoyed the peak climbing.
Pragati K — Google review
Good hike, loved the cliff walks and the views. Good photo opportunities as well. Easy parking. Highly recommended.
Richie — Google review
1st time to Stanage Edge and had a great time, the path took literally 2 hours or so. Once you get to the Beacon you should just do a 180 and turn back. You can find free parking close by or you can pay 4.50 for all day parking. Plenty of places to take photos and it can get very windy so be careful. Easily can recommend this walk to anyone defindtly one of the better peak district walks.
ErenY786 — Google review
This area is stunning. I'd say a good walk for people of all levels of fitness.
Mick D — Google review
Parking and toilet facility down on road was available. The hike upto the rocks was full of breathtaking views. Big boulders where you can sit and catch your breath plus click those cool hiker vibe photos.😀 I wish people keep their dogs on lead there so that tourists who arent comfortable around dogs donot get startled esp on such steepy mountaineous areas. Rock climbers were putting me to shame with their energy.😀✌️ Off the trail, there was a clearing with low hanging branches of tree...beautiful and silent. I didnot know until after arriving back home that this place was shown in Pride and Prejudice with Elizabeth Bennet. Shame...could have taken a photo in that pose.🥹😀
Saba A — Google review
Very easy to get to, even on foot. Beautiful view. If you’re here for pride and prejudice, you really get why Elizabeth Bennet went up there to think. Highly recommend this hike.

I came here at the end of June. The weather was quite pleasant, with a mix of sunshine and a few clouds. My friend told me that this place has a long history and is one of the most magical places I've ever been. I'll definitely come back someday.

Grave of Little John

Historical landmark
The Grave of Little John is located in the graveyard of St. Michael & All Angels Church in Hathersage, Derbyshire. This site is associated with the legendary figure Robin Hood and his lieutenant, Little John. The grave is said to be under a yew tree at the back of the cemetery and is marked by a plaque and story board recounting the legend.
Hathersage is a nice village with a few shops and cafe .and pubs hotels etc .great walk up to St Michaels church where the grave of Little John is and looked after by the forresters. Donation for the upkeep nearby.
P D — Google review
This place is really cool, I had thought it may be a bit morbid & didn't want to take photos of a grave. However, it's actually lovely & well kept, with signs telling you the backstory etc. Definitely worth a trip if you are in the area. The walk upto the church is a little steep & if you're still carrying some extra lbs from the Christmas dinner in July like I am, it's pretty onerous! You can drive up though. The Church itself you can go inside, it may look closed if doors are shut, but you can go inside, it's very lovely and nice to spend a little time in.
Tyler L — Google review
While hiking in Hathersage, we found the Grave of Little John on the map and decided to visit. The place was nice, and the weather was sunny when we were there. It's clear that people take good care of the site. It was a pleasant stop on our hike.

Very well looked after church , the history of the church and surrounding area was stunning
Mark H — Google review
A bit of folk interest and local history worth a short diversion if in the area to see, and you can visit the church at the same time. There is a good size church car park just past the church although it's not signpost from the bottom of the lane and the grave is opposite the church entrance.

Up hill but worth the small climb, nice and peaceful too.

Indian restaurant
Nestled in the vibrant town of Matlock, Maazi Hathersage is a delightful destination for those seeking an authentic taste of Indian cuisine. Founded by Irfan Shabir, this restaurant embodies the essence of his home, blending warm hospitality with traditional culinary artistry. The atmosphere is steeped in cultural heritage, enhanced by aromatic curries served in charming metal pots and the enchanting scent of incense wafting through the air.
Ordered a take-away after a leaflet menu had been posted at our caravan park in Hope. We ordered and paid online for delivery next evening. All delivery ok and on time. The delivery (set meal for 2) came in box and the driver called us once at reception. Meal contents came in the plastic microwaveable trays which was great as we didn't eat it straight away so could warm it up in microwave. Popudums were crisp (3) with onion tray. Bhaji and chicken pakora all good and tasty with the yogurt dip. 2 meals were great (tad watery but full of flavour) with 1 boiled rice, side dish and a plain naan bread (crisped up in toaster as that's how we like it. All good overall and will use again.
Paul F — Google review
We enjoyed a wonderful evening at Maazi Hathersage dining with another couple, and from start to finish it was exceptional. The warm welcome set the tone for what became a truly memorable meal. The service was attentive and friendly without ever feeling rushed, and the team struck the perfect balance between professionalism and genuine hospitality. The food was outstanding every dish beautifully presented, full of rich flavour and perfectly spiced. The menu offers a superb mix of classic favourites and unique regional specialities, all prepared with clear care and quality ingredients. The sharing dishes worked brilliantly for our group, and every course was a talking point. The setting itself is elegant yet relaxed, making it ideal for an evening with friends. You can tell that Maazi take pride not only in their food but in the whole dining experience. A real gem in Hathersage highly recommended and without question one of the best dining spots in the Peak District.

We ordered takeaway and were very excited about its delivery. However the food did not live up to expectations. It was over cooked, bland and dry. Couldn’t tell if the prawns were actually prawns or chicken . That’s how bad! I would not recommend.
Tony W — Google review
Really tasty Indian food, wasnt spicy at all though (I say this as an Indian - others might disagree) Atmosphere was relaxed and romantic Service was very good and quick

Great food, service iand restaurant. Staff went the extra mile to help celebrate a birthday. Bakewell tart needs a mention too. Note the Vindaloo is definitely hot
Krash B — Google review
I visited Maazi in Hathersage last night and the food was absolutely incredible. I had the garlic chilli chicken and butter chicken — both full of flavour, perfectly cooked, and generously portioned. The restaurant itself is also lovely inside, with a great atmosphere and a stylish interior. However, the service really let the experience down. Our waitress (a young woman) was quite off-putting — she’d approach the table and just stand silently, staring at us for a few seconds, as if expecting us to guess what she wanted. It made the whole interaction a bit uncomfortable. At the end of the meal, we had to ask for the bill, which was fine, but she gave us no time to look over it before shoving the card reader in my face — without asking if we were paying cash or card, or even who was paying (which wasn’t me, it was my friend). It felt rushed and very rude. Overall, the food was fantastic and I’d come back for that alone, but I hope the service improves and the staff get some better training in customer service, it really took away from what could’ve been a perfect evening.

First visit to this lovely restaurant whilst holidaying in Hathersage. Beautiful restaurant, attentive staff and some of the best Indian food I have ever tasted. Well done. And bill was lower than we expected as well!

Called in after a walk with the wife. Excellent service. Food was also good, had the chilli chicken sandwich we I have had before and recommend. The cakes are also very good, original and homemade.

Perfect little spot for post-Higger Tor hikers! A short 5 minute drive from the National Park which was great after working up an appetite. Food was tasty, arrived quickly and the staff were happy and friendly. They stop serving food from their main menu at 3pm so when we arrived at 2:30pm they had run out of a few things, but the alternatives I chose were lovely.

We had a really nice time today at Coleman's Deli! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a very friendly server and seated immediately. Even though it's fairly tight, it never feels that crowded. We were able to place our drink order immediately and our food order shortly thereafter. The staff was very nice to us and our children. I believe they were a mother daughter duo, and they were EXTREMELY friendly. This is one of those places where you go in and feel immediately at home. Our kids were very comfortable, possibly even too comfortable at points, but that is one of the things we were very grateful for during our visit. Their menu is also fairly extensive so there's really something for everybody. They have a good mix of Sweet and Savory options so you can get whatever it is you're looking for. The kids didn't eat their entire meal, but they've also been a little bit pickier lately so I don't fault the restaurant for that. My wife and I absolutely devoured our food and I am sad that we won't get the opportunity to return. Sometimes in busy breakfast restaurants, the noise level can be overwhelming, and this didn't have that at all. None of us felt like we were speaking over anybody else or trying to talk over any background noise. This was our second visit and the first one was just as pleasant. I don't remember specifically what I got, but I do remember enjoying it. However, the Shatshuka this time around was the star of the show for me. It was very memorable, and I would highly recommend anyone who likes that type of thing to get it. We appreciate the warmth that the staff extended to us and definitely recommend it to anybody, especially families.
Zachary L — Google review
Second time I've visited Coleman's Deli, but first time eating in. Food: £16 I can confidently say the food is amazing and not overly priced at all. I had the 'veg supreme toastie' which consisted of mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto, served on sourdough with a side of couscous and I think a cabbage salad. I'm not a big eater, and I polished the whole thing off it was that incredible! Also purchased a oat cortado and a lemon a d raspberry cake to go (because why not). Staff & atmosphere: So friendly, the lady who served us was really lovely and seemed to genuinely care what we had been up to that day! Gave great advice for food options and what the delivery had to offer. All the other staff were also lovely. The atmosphere was very relaxed and for a smallish shop it didn't feel over crowded or loud.
Virginia J — Google review
Colemans Deli is absolutely outstanding! The food was amazing, full of flavor and beautifully prepared. The coffee and matcha were delicious, and the whole atmosphere was so warm and welcoming. Service was impressively quick, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and kind – especially Charlotte, who made our visit extra special. Thank you so much, can’t wait to come back!
Lydia — Google review
From the moment I arrived I was greeted by a welcoming smile and a genuine willingness to make the visit special. The coffee arrived quickly and was superbly crafted rich and well balanced, exactly what one hopes for in a café that values its brew. Myself and my wife spent a month in Hathersage and so Colemans Deli was our go to daily stop after a long walk with the dogs! In terms of setting, everything adds up to a relaxed yet polished atmosphere you get the sense of a local café that takes its role in the community seriously, rather than just ticking boxes. Whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee or staying for a longer break with a meal, the consistency of quality is clear. Colemans Deli offers more than just “a good coffee” it’s a complete café experience built on excellent service, atmosphere and care. I wholeheartedly recommend it and will certainly return on my next visit to the area.

The menu showcases locally sourced ingredients, complemented by an extensive selection of beverages. With its cozy interior and captivating charm, The George is a true treasure in the area. Guests have praised the outstanding food quality and friendly service, making it a highly recommended dining spot with affordable options.
For years we've passed through Hathersage and seen the George, thought it looked nice but never called in. However, today we'd made a late lunch reservation and from the moment we walked in to the moment we left, we were glad we went. The restaurant is well presented as are the staff. The atmosphere was nice and the staff very professional. The food and drink was also spot on. All was of a good quality and cooked to perfection. The only thing I would say is avoid sitting in line with the front door in winter if the wind is in the wrong direction, you'll get a cool blast but the temperature soon returns to comfortable.

Was a bit nervous about eating here as I was a bit worried it wasn't going to live up to the hype. Thankfully both the food, we both had different versions of the Sunday roast and the service was first rate. The only knock was we felt a bit jammed in, the price of popularity I expect, maybe a little pricey but quality costs, food was superb, my partners lamb was cooked just as she asked, I thoroughly enjoyed the food and our server was very attentive and efficient.

Stayed for 3 nights and had a dinner, & breakfast on 3 different occasions. The food was fantastic. Only reason for the 4-star is due to the Salmon + scrambled eggs. Felt that the salmon tasted different and I had diarrhea thereafter. The grilled chicken with back was on point & made me want more after finishing Omelette with mushrooms were also smoothing and tasty

A heated outdoor pool in lovely surroundings. A real gem in Hathersage. Check the website whether you need to book. In summer you definitely will. Changing rooms and an excellent cafe just outside. Highly recommend.

Unique swimming experience with the most spectacular views. Worth a visit whatever the weather. A July Saturday and a balmy 15c air temperature. The pool was indeed the place to be. Pre booking tickets is easy to do and advisable as some public swimming sessions are, rightly, very popular. Even when busy there is a lane or two for those wanting to exercise. Great place to visit and a decent cafe if you need refueling afterwards

Nestled beside the shimmering Swimming Pool, the Pool Cafe is a delightful spot to unwind with a meal or a refreshing cup of coffee after your swim. This charming eatery offers an array of options, from classic sandwiches and traditional jacket potatoes to hearty full English breakfasts and simple toasted teacakes. Open every day from 8 AM, it features both indoor and outdoor seating, making it ideal for enjoying al fresco dining on sunny days.
A rustic café with a calm and homely atmosphere despite the lack of customers on a dismal day. This was my first visit here. The coffee was very good and the food appeared to be very good also but I am unable to pass judgement on account of my strict dietary needs. I can imagine that this establishment gets very busy at certain times of the year and there is a substantial amount of outside seating. Well away from the main road it must be quite pleasant for al fresco dining on sunny days. Today though the weather is keeping people confined either to their homes or the workplace.

This award-winning pub also serves hearty breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas, and evening meals. Additionally, it boasts a fabulous apres ski tent area with a fire pit during winter. Visitors rave about the baked cookie dough dessert as well.
We ordered lamb burger and soft shell crab burger and this is too good not to leave a 5-star review. Loved the soft shell crab burger! I didn’t intent to order this at first but am so glad I changed my mind. It’s surprisingly good and portion was not small with a reasonable price. We don’t live around Hathersage but for sure will come back again next time, even just for the crab burger!

We dine in without any reviews searching, just because of way back from Derwent Dam , saw very sharp orange colour parasols, and found a public car opposite area . While sit on felt good for the outside dining area , and foods menu look interesting, first time saw soft-shell crab dishes on Pub foods . Delicious beyond my expectations on both meals . My wife meals with real King-prawn . They with a very high standard chef and kitchen team member . Thank you for let us with a gorgeous lunch . Servicing staff also very good . Highly recommended, and we’ve told many friends after the dining . 50mins to drive here from home, but will plan come again .

Boxing Day after a walk round Hathersage we called into the Bank House sat outside in the teepee nice and festive. The food menu looks good, but we only called in for hot drinks. Will call in for food when next in the area.

Booked on the terrace for food and drinks. First time visiting, and such a lovely place. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Everywhere was immaculately clean. Sat outside, with the aroma from the Indian down the road, and the chip shop adjacent.. makes you hungry! We had booked to eat, and each had the 8oz sirloin. Food was exceptional! Well presented. Cooked as requested. Really could not fault this place. Thanks!

Fantastic atmosphere and food to die for - I had the lamb and mint pie with mash and followed by the Lemon desert and would happily have paid double given the quality of the food. Only slight negative was that they seemed to be understaffed in the kitchen so the wait was a little long. Otherwise though absolutely fantastic and look forward to returning next time I'm in town.

A lovely venue. But the food is definitely overpriced for what you get. 10 of us eat here. The seafood sandwich was literally a deli filler on a white hot dog bread roll, no butter, not toasted quite a let down, we all ordered a wide variety of food and no one was impressed with anything. My T bone was overcooked and had a lot of chewy bits. However the vine tomatoes were really nice as were the chips. Definitely won’t be visiting again. Very disappointed.

Just very good. We had the seafood platter which was delicious, well cooked and balanced. Shared a couple of glasses of wine. The service was prompt and friendly. Also got lucky with the weather which was sunny and still - not so common for October, but definitely brought the experience together well.

Fresh ingredients, vibrant flavours and overlooks the peak district. I only wish their service did match up to the high standards set by the chef - we arrived 10 minutes before our reservation and understandably they asked us to wait in the bar. We had to remind them around 15 minutes past our reservation time to get us to the table. The table service following this was much better and the food did make up for this rather cursory attitude at the front door.

Unfortunately, I am limited to paraphrasing the input you provided. Here is a summarized paragraph: Hathersage Social Club is an excellent restaurant that offers a delightful dining experience. The staff members are friendly and accommodating, making it ideal for families with children. The food is beautifully presented, with highlights including steaks and the new addition of pork tomahawk to the menu.
Tasty food, lots of interesting choice on the lunch menu. Waffles were amazing. Good service

My partner and I had an amazing evening everyone was looking after us so well! Abbey in particular was an absolute star having to deal with a difficult situation from a table near us she kept a cool head and didn’t let that stop her! Our pizza was that good that I had to know who cooked it and pizza chef Oscar made perfect pizza that was amazing every bite! 🍕

I had a lovely experience in this restaurant. I was on tight schedule and the staff was very helpful, suggesting quick options and preparing the food very quickly. The meal and the wine were delicious, the outside dining area is very relaxing and pleasant, with blankets and heaters available. I would visit again!

Disappointing Experience at Peak Pizza. We visited Peak Pizza at 6:40 PM, and ordered our food by 6:50 PM. We were not advised of any significant wait times. We had to actively seek out staff to place both our food and drink orders. At 7.30pm food had still not arrived and when we eventually got the attention of the service staff, we were told the food would be at least another 20 minutes despite the restaurant being empty (she then tried to claim they were busy despite it being a Monday evening). We were given the option to have the pizzas boxed up so we could eat them in our vehicle?! Why we would choose that when we were sat at a table is beyond me, but even then, there would still be another 20 minutes plus before 3 pizzas were ready. The service was horrendous, and we ended up leaving at 7:30 PM with our 6-year-old so hungry he was crying. The overall service was simply awful.

Nice pizzas at a great price for takeaway. Only thing is they were slightly cold when we collected them and the three-salami pizza only had two types on

Really tasty pizzas and great service from Seth on 22/7/25. Kitchen staff explained ahead of time that they'd be a wait due to the size of our party, which was helpful as it allowed us to pop back to our accommodation for a bit.

Went here with my boyfriend and my uncles, amazing hospitality, the waiter went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed, tasty pizza, I would highly recommend the lemon and rosemary chicken one, the sauces provided weren't too spicy and went well with the pizza 🍕 I had a Lemon San Pellegrino which was very refreshing 🍋 It was a lovely atmosphere sitting outside 😁 Overall an outstanding place to go for lunch

Nestled in the picturesque village of Hathersage, The Scotsman's Pack Country Inn offers a charming and cozy stay in an old inn. The simple single rooms, some featuring four-poster beds, provide a homely atmosphere for guests. The inn boasts a quaint beer garden next to the river, perfect for enjoying summertime dining while listening to the soothing sounds of flowing water. Inside, guests can relax by the roaring fireplace or enjoy events throughout the year.
We have visited this wonderful pub several times lately. You can always rely on a friendly welcome by the excellent, hard-working staff here. The surroundings add to the experience. We have tried most things on the menu and have always been impressed by the quality on offer. It is very popular so I would suggest booking prior to your visit. The bar is well stocked with a selection of real ales. A special mention for the Bakewell pudding which is to die for!

Our party of five arrived on Sunday at 2:30 PM with short notice, and the staff demonstrated excellent hospitality. We were promptly seated after ordering beverages. The culinary experience was exceptional; the fish and chips I selected were of remarkable quality and value. The rating is a four-star due to the limited parking availability.

It was almost awesome…….almost. The service was slow. Two of us dined in the bar sat next to another table of two. Their starters came, we had no drinks. Their mains came, we drinks but no starters. Their plates were cleared, our soup finally arrived, nearly 45 minutes after ordering. Butter bean Tuscan soup. Despite there only being 5 butter beans between two bowls of soup, it was delicious! It got better from here! The beef roast was fantastic, perfectly pink, sizeable yorkies and cauliflower cheese that was bang on! A really decent roast for the price. No check back though, and a missed opportunity for further drink sales. So, if you have time on your hands, I highly recommend the food. It really was top drawer. However, the chaotic service let it down a star I’m afraid.

Called in with a friend for a few drinks, a chat and a meal. Really impressed. The team there - Mark and Sylvia are great, friendly and very welcoming. We both had the short rib beef randang for our meals. Absolutely excellent. Charlie, the chef excelled and it was delicious. Thoroughly recommended, both the food, the pub and Silvia, Mark and Charlie. Many Thanks. I will back there again.

Good value and great meals, both evening and breakfast. Car parking could be a bit limited (only if pub was busy) but was fine for when I was there. Good sized room.
