Holywood in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Holywood, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Holywood is a charming seaside town on the shores of Belfast Lough, known for its historic priory ruins, traditional Maypole and elegant Victorian and Georgian architecture. Visitors can enjoy independent shops, cafés and restaurants along the compact town centre, plus scenic walks on the coastal path and beaches nearby. Golfers are drawn to Holywood Golf Club, famously associated with Rory McIlroy, and the renowned Royal Belfast Golf Club just along the shore. Its convenient rail links and proximity to the Ulster Folk Museum and central Belfast make it an easy and appealing base for exploring County Down and beyond.
With favorites like Cultra Inn, Holywood Priory, and The Royal Belfast Golf Club, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Coast and Cultra Inn so you can get the best taste of Holywood while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Ulster Folk Museum, located just outside Belfast, offers a unique glimpse into Northern Ireland's past. Divided into two sections, the museum vividly brings the province's social history to life. The Folk Museum features a meticulously recreated early 20th-century town with costumed actors practicing traditional crafts. Visitors can explore various reconstructed buildings and witness regional skills such as lace making, wood turning, open-hearth cooking, and more.
Went for a day out from Warren Point. Amazing to see all the old buildings, many which had been transported from all over Ireland and rebuilt. Also saw several of the craftsmen and women carrying out traditional work. It demonstrated history much better than just reading in books. Even had a pint in the old pub on site. Well worth the visit and a great day out for all the family.

I first visited in 1971 as a child. Since then I’ve visited the museum over 20 times. I always see and learn something new. The staff and volunteers are welcoming and knowledgeable. We pick a nice day and walk the full park, thoroughly enjoying the peace and quiet especially in the rural sections. A special place.
Sandi H — Google review
Great day out. From the moment we arrived, the staff and volunteers were friendly, knowledgeable and clearly enjoying themselves as much as the rest of us. The doctor was a particular favourite. He brought the role of the local doctor to life. Just a shame we couldn't transport him to our local surgery. The sweet shop brought back many a memory. A very informative and instructive discussion on weaving and the important role of looms in the community. The local hostelry was worth a visit for the history of the building and a glass of the black stuff. Really interesting buildings, steeped in history. Gentle walks around the park to see the cottages and farm buildings. You could easily spend the entire day there. The gift shop had an array of gifts on offer, at prices to suit most pockets. We really enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend the park and visit again if we were in the area.
Frances O — Google review
Lots to see with original and replica farm and town houses relating to life in Ulster throughout the years. Quite a lot of walking involved and occasional farm animals. Children and adults will enjoy seeing what life was like in the past. Occasional friendly farm animal too. Pigs were popular.

thank you to all the staff today. I really enjoyed my visit with my parents and sister. It felt so refreshing so unplug and step back in time. I’d like to especially thank the doctor who was fantastic. He stayed in character the entire time and made things feel so real. He is a real asset and made the visit completely. Please pass my thanks onto him, my entire family were really impressed. It would be great to see more like him in those traditional roles.

I love the shops and Dr.’s Martin Clinic ❤️ the experience is like time travel way back 100 yrs ago. Dr. Martin was so accomodating Doctor. He was so nice and entertaining. He really suit with his role talking and acting like a real Doctor way back 1900. When u get there better focus on the first village its far better than the following houses. I will return there and explore more the first village. Thankyou!!!
Sheika S — Google review
We spent a wonderful day at the museum and still felt that six hours weren’t enough to see everything. It truly feels like stepping back in time — the houses and interiors are beautifully crafted and full of intricate details. We spoke with around eight interpreters representing various historical professions, such as a doctor and a blacksmith, and each conversation was both fascinating and fun. The entry fee offers excellent value, and there’s even a discount if you arrive by public transport. An absolute must-see when in Belfast!
Luise G — Google review
Friendly knowledgeable staff. Very much a working history museum with regular demonstrations. Cafe reasonably priced. The only gripe being not checking all toilets have soap before opening for the day.

We both love a wee rest and coffee in the park, Sasha loves to bimble about and people watch.

Good place to walk the dog. Plenty of beach when the tide is out. Lots of open green areas to get a good run. A decent park for kids. Couple of coffee/tea/ice cream places as well.
Nick R — Google review
Lovely beach to walk along. If you fancy a long walk, you can follow it all the way to Bangor. Playpark is there for the kids to enjoy, but of late, it seems it's undergoing some development and so is unavailable. It is a very popular location for all. Kids, adults, dog walkers, picnic goers, exercise enthusiasts etc
Bekah B — Google review
Fantastic wee park! First time coming here the other day, and the wee man absolutely loves it here. The equipment is all in really good condition and mostly made from wood, which is great. It's just a 1min walk down to the beach too. There were a few coffee vans and an ice cream van so we could get our caffeine fix. Hope it stays a nice park.
Michael C — Google review
The playground refurb (2025) is lovely but the area leaves a lot to be desired especially in peak summer. Bins not emptied rubbish everywhere and so wasps and bugs everywhere. Play park was rammed the day we went (summer hols) and has 2 points of entry/egress making it hard to keep kids secure.
Christine G — Google review
Beautiful grassed area beside a sandy beach on Belfast Lough. It's got a children's play area, carpark, a coffee van and ice-cream van. The North Down Coastal Path passes through it. It's the ideal spot for a family day out, not far from Holywood and Marino train station.

Nice views. Crisp fresh sea breeze Too many dogs. People need to pick up after their dogs. Nice plat area for kids. Free parking. Lovely walking path. Sandy beach in places. Nice for a stroll.

Great new park coffee and ice cream van on site. Quite a few parking spaces can be very busy at times! Nice walk along the seafront too

Holywood Priory, a significant historical landmark, boasts the remains of a 12th-century Anglo-Norman Augustinian Abbey, initially established by St. Laiseran in the 7th century. Following the devastating Black Death period (1348-1350), Niall ONeill renovated the church to accommodate the Franciscan Order.
If you like history you'll love this. 7th Century site of a Monastry founded by St. Laiseran. The present ruins are 12th century Anglo-Norman Augustinian Abbey built by Thomas Whyte and much of these ruins remain. After the Black death (1348-1350) Niall O’Neill refurbished the church for the Franciscan Order. The Priory was dissolved on New Years Day, 1541, by Henry VIII with its lands passing into the hands of the O’Neill family and then to Sir James Hamilton, First Viscount Clandeboye. Hamilton laid out the town, with a maypole at the crossroads and most of the early buildings are clustered round the Priory. The tower dates from the 1800’s when this was the site of the town’s Parish Church. Also has a really interesting graveyard

Royal Belfast Golf Club, established in 1881, is one of Ireland's oldest and finest golf clubs. Situated just minutes from the heart of Belfast, this club offers a challenging par 70 course with 18 holes designed by Harry S. Colt. The traditional links layout features undulating fairways and strategically placed bunkers, providing an exceptional golfing experience.
Royal Belfast was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in my life! The course was amazing, the clubhouse is an ornate monument to golf and should be experienced by all who can. The members were the most welcoming people I’ve met in my life, and the pro and pro shop staff made me feel like a celebrity. All of you at Royal Belfast will be FOREVER etched on my heart!!! I only hope I made half as good of an impression on you as you all did on me. I wish you all nothing but the best and if this does not want to make you visit then I hope you find something in life that moves you the way the people and course moved me at Royal Belfast. I love you guys and what a great day it was…hopefully fate and circumstance bring me back here one day.

Super Golf course in great condition and wonderful Clubhouse and friendly staff. Well worth a visit
David M — Google review
One of the top courses in N.I. The fairways were like carpet, and the greens were FAST! Fantastic coastal views, and the clubhouse was next level impressive. The people there were friendly and helpful. We had a caddy (Maxwel), that made the round enjoyable with his knowledge of the course.

Never disappoints. Fantastic course, out of this world club house and staff couldnt do enough for us. 16 of us played and stayed for dinner. All if us loved the experience. No 1.

Fantastic experience and ever helpful staff, special thanks to Tracey and the team. Great to catch up with the current PGA Andrew, thanks for the recommendation Andrew, the Guinness was great. Till next time
Gerry M — Google review
My second trip to Royal Belfast, and certainly not my last. This is the way all clubs should be run. The staff goes above and beyond. The clubhouse is outstanding. The service in the bar is unsurpassed. The course is in stellar shape. The greens are impeccable. The pro shop prices are more than fair. I've played many premier courses around the globe, but the combination of condition, playability, and service at Royal Belfast really can't be touched. Lots of places might have one aspect or another, but all told, this is right at the top of my list. Thanks to Dan and the entire staff. It was a real pleasure.
Robert W — Google review
The golf course is beautiful, challenging and in wonderful condition, the clubhouse grand and immaculate and the restaurant homely with great views. But above everything else is the warmth and hospitality of the staff. We visited from South Africa and were treated like members for the day, with everyone from staff to members going out of their way to welcome us. Can't recommend it enough!
Matthew F — Google review
What an amazing golf course. All 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed everything about the golf club. We had a cracking day and the course exceeded expectations. The greens were true and fast which definitely caught us out a fair few times but a great challenge and great fun. No doubt we will return again in the future! Thank you!

Warm and friendly atmosphere with excellent and caring service. We had the gluten free fish and chips along with the gluten free sticky toffee pudding! It was absolutely delicious! Thank you for your attentiveness, hospitality and outstanding food!

Family took me for birthday dinner, I had never heard of this place, anyway we all had a wonderful evening great staff and the food was plentiful and top notch , I had the chicken stacker best ever and it’s one of my favourites, the Moules marinière sauce was just the best drinkable 😜 The fried hake excellent, even the humble fish and chips not greasy just perfectly cooked Lovely cocktails the rhubarb and vanilla bramble type was one of those you could drink gallons without thinking ! Would definitely go back

Popped in on the off chance for a table for four, as it looked quite busy. We were greeted by a warm friendly guy who took us upstairs to our table. One of us had gluten intolerance and she was advised of the options available (which were great) we all had different meals and drinks and everything was perfect. The staff were really lovely, food was delicious and we all had a great time.

Friendly, helpful, understanding and engaging team at the Coast. First time lunch visit for 4 adults and one 2year old. We were made to feel comfortable from the second we walked in. The food was of high quality and tasty with good portions for lunch at great price. Highly recommend a visit, you won’t be disappointed.
David M — Google review
Really a fantastic experience. We booked for around 20 people following a christening and were seated upstairs at a big table, kind of tucked away which was perfect as the children could run around without causing too much of a disturbance! Having pre-ordered, the food was served very promptly and everyone commented on how delicious it all was. I think usually with big groups some things are forgotten, some things have cooled down too much etc but it was all perfect. The service as well was brilliant with a special mention to Jackie who was taking care of us and was so attentive. We live locally so we know how good it is but I was pleasantly surprised that even with a big group the usual high standards were still there

Such a lovely, friendly, warm, and welcoming restaurant. Stevie one of the staff members, made our night flow without any problems. Very welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was delicious. We will be back

Irish pub
The Cultra Inn, located on the road between Belfast and Bangor, is part of the luxurious Culloden Estate and Spa. It offers top-quality Irish hospitality and a relaxed dining atmosphere. The morning menu features a variety of breakfast options, including Eggs Benedict and Porridge Oats with customizable toppings. This quintessential Irish Pub and Bistro experience also caters to kids with a special menu.
We visited here this week for my husband’s birthday celebration. I had called in advance and asked them if they could do something special? And we decided that when I’d order dessert they will bring it out on a special platter with a candle! And they did so! In fact upon entering my husband was greeted very nicely and wished happy birthday! Our server Adam’s friendly nature made us feel at ease instantaneously. Now that’s a five star on hospitality. Let’s talk about the food, we ordered a variety of dishes- chicken curry, cod, and prawn linguine. I am so impressed with the chefs breath of expertise across all cuisines. I mean the mix of flavours, the chopping, every thing was perfectly done! Brilliant team work! Definitely will go again and won’t wait until another birthday!
Shruti S — Google review
The food was great! Ambience was cosy and warm, and they are dog friendly at the bar area. Service was friendly but took rather too long. We waited about half an hour for drinks orders, and a further 50mins for our dinner to arrive. The buffalo wings were great, as was the butternut squash soup and chicken curry.

Its that good, not only the food but also the staff / Chefs that we have been going every night whilst staying at the hotel (6 nights). Excellent menu with quality food choices which are very well sourced. A great place to eat. Worth the visit all the way from Plymouth in Devon !!

I came with family to watch the British & Irish Lions rugby match versus Australia (1st Test). The Guinness was poured with skill and care. It’s a very warm and welcoming pub. People had their dogs with them and I loved seeing the pet friendly environment in action. You cannot beat the location, and the views outside are fabulous.

Spent the evening after our wedding in here and it was one of the nicest meals we have had in a long time ( apart from our wedding food in the culloden but that's not an everyday meal). Got some cocktails which were the right amount of flavour but without a strong alcohol taste. The starters were great ( Pork belly & chicken wings ) then the fish & chips was nicely battered and had a nice flavour without being too greasy. Will be back at another point as the food was great and so were the staff.
Ryan C — Google review
My sister-in-law and I treated our 11 year old niece to a birthday lunch followed by a spa treatment and we had a wonderful meal. The portions were perfectly sized and the food delicious. The kids menu was great with our niece opting for the sausage and mash. The staff were friendly and helpful and, although we didn’t have one with us, it was wonderful to see dogs were allowed into the bar. Will definitely be back!
Lynne S — Google review
The goats cheese salad for starter was amazing. The chef's special, beef just melted in the mouth and remember to leave some space for the dessert menu equally delicious
Jayne C — Google review
Very disappointing visit. Our first time at Cultra inn, we had a voucher for Hastings and decided to use it due to location handiness. Our waiter was nice but seemed very new to the role, after we got our drinks we were waiting for a long while to get our food, seeing people who got sat after us receive their starters and mains before us. We both got chicken dishes and we were disappointed with the quality of both dishes. Chicken was so beyond dry it seemed like it was left out under a heat lamp for ages, which would explain the long wait for the food. We were planning to politely say to the waiter but no one came over to check on us until we were very much ‘finish’ with our food. When the waiter finally came he didn’t ask us anything, just took the plates and left. We didn’t want to risk dessert and as we got up to find someone to take our payment, we were met with a 10% charge for service, which was honestly a joke at this point. After issues with paying a portion of the bill with the voucher, we ended up paying just over £70 for a dinner that required us to stop in Tesco on way home and get better food. Definitely a first and last visit.
