Canossa in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Canossa, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Canossa is best known for the ruins of its medieval castle, where Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV famously stood in the snow in 1077 to seek Pope Gregory VII’s forgiveness. The hilltop site offers panoramic views over the Apennine foothills and the surrounding countryside of Emilia-Romagna. Nearby villages and trails invite quiet walks through farmland, woods, and calanchi (eroded clay gullies). The area also gives access to regional food traditions, including Parmigiano Reggiano and local Lambrusco wines.
With favorites like Trattoria Cristofori, Tempietto del Petrarca, Canossa, and Antico Borgo Medioevale Votigno di Canossa, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Yggdrasill Viking Pub and Ristorante Pizzeria River 2.0 di Guazzi Cav. Simone so you can get the best taste of Canossa while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Castle of Canossa is a hilltop site that once belonged to a 10th-century nobleman and later became a monastery. The remnants of the medieval castle offer visitors a glimpse into its rich history, with a small museum providing further insight. The surrounding area boasts breathtaking views of hills, villages, and other castles.
A beautiful historic site with the remnants of a medieval castle. The museum is small, so that the visit here takes about 25 min. That leaves enough time to take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, villages and castles.

Nestled in the enchanting Lands of Canossa, the Museo Nazionale di Canossa offers a captivating glimpse into history. While only remnants of Countess Matilde's castle remain, the museum stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of events that unfolded here. Visitors can explore these ruins and delve into fascinating tales narrated by knowledgeable guides who bring history to life with humor and charm.

Special thanks go to Fabio, the museum guide, who knew how to entertain us by telling the story in an ironic way and without ever making it boring. Highly recommended, it is worth including it in your itinerary. Antico Borgo Medioevale Votigno di Canossa is a stunning medieval village nestled in serene, lush green hills, making it an ideal destination for a peaceful getaway. Visitors have praised its charming architecture, including unique towers and Buddhist statues that add to the town's character. The accommodations are comfortable and well-maintained, with friendly staff enhancing the experience. This picturesque location has even welcomed notable figures like the Dalai Lama and features a lovely Tibetan temple.
We visited for a beautiful wedding. (for those complaining when it's closed, it is available to rent the entire place for an event so stop moaning about it) the rooms were nice, beds comfortable. The staff were nice. The location of the borgo is very quiet and in lush green hills. It's worth visiting.

Not pet friendly. Pet rude. Very rude managers insisted in a very obnoxious manner that I keep a 2 kilo toy poodle on a leash during the whole private event “for sanitary reasons”, even thought the place (which is an open air venue in a middle of a forrest) has cats and mice and who knows what else running around. I was shocked. I should point out that my dog was invited, and I normally don’t take her to places she is unwelcome. (Personal satisfaction was somewhat obtained after we witnessed to some very unsanitary behaviour of other human guests.)

The place among the hills of Reggio Emilia is very suggestive: you can breathe a religious air of peace and meditation. The village is small, but I recommend stopping by if you are in the area. The road to get there is not easy and is narrow. Entrance is free. There is a cultural centre, a museum and a shop. There are no bars but there is a bathroom available to everyone. Historical landmark
Tempietto del Petrarca in Canossa is a significant historical site associated with the poet Francesco Petrarca. Although not widely recognized, it holds great value as a place where the poet once stayed. The small temple stands as a reminder of this moment in history and is located amidst beautiful woods, accessible via a scenic route. While parking and refreshment options may be limited, the area offers an ideal setting for a leisurely walk or a brief stop at nearby tables.
(Translated by Google) The small temple recalls a moment in the life of the poet Francesco Petrarca, when in 1341 he was a guest at the Rossena Castle. Fascinating to think that such an illustrious poet in our history passed through here. The route to reach it from the provincial road is very beautiful, flat and in the middle of the woods. Near the temple there are tables for a short break.

(Translated by Google) It is an important place for its historical value even if in the books when talking about Petrarca there is still no mention of the events referring to that place Petrarca refers to Arquà Petrarca, a Venetian locality in the province of Padua where he lived until the end of his days. The only drawback is adequate parking 🅿 and a refreshment point but for a panoramic walk it's worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) A place that I usually frequent at least twice a year. I go there when I want to eat game and donkey stew with polenta. But the rest of the offer is also very respectable. Nice and approachable managers. Generous portions and low prices. Porzioni abbondanti e prezzi contenuti.

(Translated by Google) On Thursdays, my mother-in-law orders pizza, and I go up the hill to eat a whole pan of it—you decide! I didn't list the price because I also scrounge that, but it's worth it, even if you have to pay!

(Translated by Google) Classic trattoria with typical Reggio Emilia menu. The tortelli and cappelletti in broth are excellent. The desserts, semifreddo with mascarpone and cake in the cellar, are exquisite. Nice and polite staff, very approachable. The roast wild boar was excellent, it could have been a little more abundant. Fair price, excellent food. Place to definitely return. Prezzo onesto, cibo ottimo. Posto in cui ritornare sicuramente.
