The Old Venetian Port of Chania is a historic harbor that dates back to the 13th century and was used for trade by the Venetians and Ottomans. The bustling waterfront is filled with fish restaurants offering stunning views of the port and its elegant antique lighthouse. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll around the harbor, savoring seafood meze or grilled octopus while admiring the picturesque setting.
What a beautiful place to visit. We wound our way through the many alleyways of lovely shops selling everything you could imagine them the Port just appeared in front of you. So much to do and see. We took an hours boat trip, which stopped offshore and you could swim with and feed the fishes. Their is a great choice of bars and restaurants to have food and drinks at. Try the Chicken Gyros, delicious. Some fab photo opportunities, as well as a Maritime Museum. A lovely way 6o spend a day, a must visit.

Really busy Lots of tavernas to choose from. Selling lovely Cretan dishes. Great shops down tiny little streets. Beautiful handmade wares. Stunning scenery in the little streets and across the harbour.. Well worth a day trip. Boat cruises for hire too.
Dawn C — Google review
Well worth a visit. I would suggest trying to get there early morning for breakfast and a walk. Late morning it was absolutely heaving with fierce competition for seats in the harbour restaurants. A walk into the harbour and along the outer harbour wall is a great experience set aside at least an hour to do the walk both ways. A number of places advertised real Greek food, but to be honest, the fare on offer was pretty similar in terms of an "intetnational" menu. The exception to this were a few better quality restaurants just on the edge of the main drag.
Ray B — Google review
This place is absolute magic. The history of nearly 5000 years of civilization is on fully display here. The old Venetian port area is beautiful, restaurants are fantastic and the people are very friendly. Will definitely visit again!
Gagan A — Google review
Have been there 7 years ago, returned again for good wibes and memories. It's a gemstone of Venetian architecture with a bit of Ottoman influence, some ruination after WWII and flavours of Greek cuisine. Definitely worth a visit and a walk, if you're on the Crete island. Save couple of hours to stroll in the labyrinth of the narrow streets, wonder in the shops, savour some local food! Just enjoy it!
Julia B — Google review
Clear clean water. The lighthouse. Views that one is not tired to make photos enough in any time of day. From land or when you get out with the glass bottom boat. I let here some of my photos. Enjoy..... And go to see by yourself. You will be astonished and happy relaxed all the time you are here.

Chania is an absolute must visit. Beautiful old harbour. Lots of fabulous shops, restaurants, bars. Those around the harbour front are no more expensive than the ones in the maze of streets behind. The streets behind have a great vibe both day and night. Chania is services by a great bus station with buses running into the early morning to outlying areas like Kato Stalis, Agia Marina, Platanias and much further. There is a wonderful fort to visit and the whole area is very safe. I just love it ❤️

The Lighthouse of Chania is a historic structure originally built by the Venetians in the 16th century and later modified by the Egyptians in 1839. It stands on a mole protruding into Chania harbor, offering breathtaking views of the old port and Chania's old town.
The lighthouse is so beautiful!! Built in the late 1800s, the site has been preserved and maintained and is now a great tourist attraction. Would 10/10 recommend visiting at dusk to see the sunset on the village! The lighting is incredible! Lots of little windows to look out and see the sunset as well!
Charis S — Google review
Nice enough for a spot of lunch or a glass of wine. Maybe a quick walk around the town. 15min on top of lunch is plenty if you eat in the harbor area. Pretty much all the pics were from the table or close to. Note the blue car with no plates....! We were very lucky a kind local explained the parking rules. In short you can't park anywhere convenient, round red/blue sign is resident only. No clue how you get your plates back. The map is athe only useful parking we found.
Nick C — Google review
Very nice lighthouse. There is a short walk to get to the lighthouse, you walk by the wall on the one side, and sea on the other. I went there when it was quite hot, maybe you should visit early in the day, or late in the day. Access to the lighthouse at the end is locked, but you have a nice view on the city of Chania and onto the sea.
Marko I — Google review
The highlight and the reason of every walk in the old town. Great in any moment of the day or night for that matter. Even better when going to the Sea and come back to the harbor.
Louanna N — Google review
Beautiful landmark that is totally worthy of a closer look after a short walk around the old port with its beautiful corners and shops that show up between its historical buildings. Also, the walk offers a great view of the sea and there benches for stops.
Anthi P — Google review
Very picturesque place to visit. The sun sets right by the lighthouse, when viewed from the boardwalk. We walked the levy all the way to the lighthouse, which was enjoyable, but also tricky once the sun went down and we walked back in the dark (pavement and bricks are uneven). We did not pay to go inside the lighthouse. We had a very nice outing just walking around the area.
MillionMile T — Google review
Pleasant walk to reach the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is closed for visiting, but while walking there you may walk the walls and have a nice view either towards the open sea or towards the Venetian port. Do recommend the stroll before sunset.
Dragoș V — Google review
A bit of a walk to the lighthouse, over some bumpy cobbles, but otherwise easy walk. Nice views. You can't get access to the lighthouse as it has a locked gate but can't walk up to it and stand on walls leading to it, with breathtaking views out to see and marina.

The Old Chania Market, also known as Agora or the Municipal Market of Chania, is a historic indoor market located in the heart of the city. It offers a wide variety of local products such as cheese, olive oil, wine, olives, sweets, honey and carved olive wood items. In addition to food items like vegetables, fish and meat, there are also stalls selling crafts and souvenirs.
Amazing place to visit year in year out! It’s beauty still feels catchy every time I visit it

Lovely place and lovely people! Shop owners were very friendly and welcoming, so much variety or authentic Greek items to buy and many many different types of souvenirs
Raj S — Google review
It was very busy due to the number of cruise ships in. Still a great place to visit. Just allow time for the crowds.
Richard R — Google review
Everyone was awaiting for the new year, 2020. Cobble stone roads to walk with shops and places to eat indoors or outdoors. The retail stores closed early. I was surprised I only saw one souvenir shop. You don’t and old strolling having a good time. A lot of excitement at midnight with the new year. Absolutely beautiful.
Angela ( — Google review
Wonderful place to spend the afternoon or the day, great coffee houses and taverns, the local shops are great to get a souvenir from, that said they are not cheap comparing to other locations around Crete. Touristic area but definitely worth a visit.
Ameen D — Google review
Before packing out from Chania visit this lovely market to take away some of the cities flavours and memories with you. Almost all shops are selling same stuff but it good to look around. You can buy olives, olive oil, spices, cheeses and some mountain teas from here. Options are available for Souvenirs as you can see many beautifully crafted wooden items and some well painted pottery. Keep an eye on your weight limit before going crazy.
Theocharis S — Google review
Lovely market it's got lots of the same shops you would find else where in chania, but there is little food places that look nice and and some traditional butchers and fish mongers. The prices are better than the other tourist places and there is a nice educational display in the centre of the market. There is also the old walls of the original market just out side interesting if you like to see the history of places All in all a good little wander for a hour.
Alex L — Google review
Interesting, but not too much to see, since I was there in January and it seemed the market had low-season too. What I liked were the traditional cheese and olive stalls and some eataries.

Pie shop
Located near the Municipal Market of Chania, Iordanis Bougatsa is a family-owned bakery that has been serving delightful bougatsa for over a century. Established in 1924, it is the oldest bougatsa store in Chania. The traditional bougatsa here comes in two varieties - sweet with custard and savory with myzithra, a local goat and sheep cheese.
Wonderful pie. The experience is a bit chaotic, because there can be a big line to sit and take away. But it is worth it. The pie is very very good, especially the traditional one. Also the greek coffee is good.
Enis — Google review
They have the wonderful bougatsa Iordanis and give you free water from tap but is drinkable and refreshing. A Big plus they have the announcement on the door and one knows from the entrance that if want take stay on the counter,if dine in you have to sit and be patient. With all the advertising they have from YouTubers the place is packed but somehow they manage beautifully all the crowd and even when mismatched the orders they cope with. Thank you. Efharisto poli. They have bougatsa with local cheese plain, with sugar and you have cinnamon on the table if you want to put on top. As well they serve bougatsa with cream filling which I don't have having in my mind idea of too sweet and don't feel like it.
Louanna N — Google review
A small family-run business, offering traditional bougatsa. You can choose between plain or with sugar options. It was very delicious and fresh. Plus, since it’s made with goat cheese, those with lactose intolerance can enjoy it without any issues. The history behind it is also very impressive. I definitely recommend it!
Ceren Y — Google review
Very hospitable service - sat us down and helped us with the order. Do try the Greek coffee and of course the bougatsa. It’s amazing on its own but you can also sprinkle sugar and cinnamon for taste. Highly recommended!
Daniel O — Google review
Exactly what you’re looking for if you want bougatsa – simple, authentic, and delicious. They even offered a vegan option, which is a big plus. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. Definitely a place I’d recommend for anyone craving bougatsa in Chania.
Sly — Google review
They served only one type of food and that was the bougatsa. I enjoyed but you have to get in early. We got the last portion of the day and it was only 2.30pm. Definitely worth trying as the portion was great value for money.
Andy L — Google review
It’s not just the tradition, here we talk about pure perfection 😁 Never had a bougatsa with cheese and sugar, but I must say it was delicious! The friendly atmosphere, the staff with their smile and jokes made the experience even sweeter and memorable. One of the must visit and taste places in Chania!
Alexandros T — Google review
Nice Bougatsa with local feeling. Many locals and tourists meet at the same place to drink coffee, discuss and eat bougatsa. You can also order coffee, fresh orange juice and other refreshments. It’s very crowded though and you normally have to wait to be seated. Iordanis bougatsa doesn’t taste like Thessaloniki’s bougatsa and I would only recommend the traditional one with the cheese and not the sweet/vegeterian bougatsa. The pastry in the bougatsa tastes similar to the galaktoboureko pastry. The service is very fast and staff is helpful. It is kids friendly.

Nea Chora Beach is a vibrant and inviting stretch of sand located just a short stroll from the heart of Chania, Crete. This picturesque beach spans about 1.5 kilometers and boasts stunning views of the Aegean Sea, making it an ideal spot for sunbathing or taking a refreshing dip in its crystal-clear waters. The central area is well-organized with sun loungers and umbrellas, while the western side retains its natural charm with rocky outcrops perfect for exploration.
I live close by. I hit this beach up at least every other day. I take my own umbrella and towel and chill. If you want to rent some beds and umbrellas they range anywhere from 12 to 15 euros potato want you bringing outside food or even water. It's a good swimming beach though there are just a few rocks but mostly nice sand on the bottom and the water is clear. It does get crowded with tourists especially on Sundays. Enjoy this beach and please keep it clean.
Darren B — Google review
Very nice sandy beach in the vicinity of the centre of Chania. Sunbeds 10€ each, clear water and sand. Nearby restaurants serve very tasty meals (breakfasts, lunches, and desserts). Lovely waves to swim and play around. Highly recommended.
Damian G — Google review
Comfortable shallow sea with amazingly clean water and a lot of small fishes. Cabins and showers are free of charge. But the beach is pretty narrow and full of chairs (2 chairs and umbrella cost 20 euros). So, if you don't wanna pay, it's difficult to find a place.
Ksenia B — Google review
Great beach next to the town. 20 minutes walking through the town, 20 if you go directly near Firka Fortress... 40 if you have pictures from Firka Fortress. The way near the water is cooler and more refreshing in the morning, on the way back though, a very strong smell of cat urine ruined my day. The beach is small but well organized with sunbeds and umbrellas, but one can use the towel on the sand method as well. Clear clean water when no waves. Some rocks randomly was an inconvenient for me in swimming but I coped.
Louanna N — Google review
It is the best beach ⛱️ in the northeastern part of the city of Chania. At the beginning of the beach, the free zones are really dirty and with lots of trash in the sand. You should visit the eastern end of the beach which is clean and with more space to enjoy. The water is clean and beautiful and you will spot lots of fish in it.
Van Z — Google review
Very beautiful beach. The water is not very clean. The umbrella and sun beds are 15 euro for the first line and 10 for the rest. But if you want to be in front you shall wake up early. On the left part you can rent kayaks or SUPs.
Bilyana V — Google review
The is located not too far away from the old port and the old town of Chania. Its a soft sand beach without many rocks in the water. The water is crystal clear you can see the bottom where your feet stand and the small fish around you. There's a lot of restaurants/bars behind the beach which is where you can loan the present beds with sunshade. The prices may vary but wr paid 20 euros for the day for 2 beds. The water is not cold at all so you can stay inside a long time having fun. Overall a pretty amazing beach!
Andre M — Google review

Absolutely amazing experience! The food was exceptional, especially the octopus – tender, perfectly seasoned, and full of flavor. Every dish was prepared with such care and attention to detail. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for outstanding food and warm hospitality. Definitely a 5-star experience! 🤗🍀

We had a wonderful experience here. Food was amazing. From the appetizers to the main dish together with the wine. The sea bream was perfectly cooked. We also got a free desert with raki that was excellent. The staff was so kind and attentive. Breathtaking view for the sunset. Definitely a place to recommend.

2025.10/ We choose the small fried fish and fresh fried calamari, the both were good tasting and perfectly prepared. The fried potatoes are fresh with is a plus. The service was great, with friendly and efficient waiters. And, the fact that is situated in a beautiful location, with amazing view over the old Harbour, makes your lunch or dinner more memorable. We have received a brownie with ice cream and some raki on the house. 👌 Would recommend.
CAPATINA R — Google review
beautiful seaside restaurant with excellent service and a lovely atmosphere. The location is stunning — right by the water, calm and comfortable — and the food was truly delicious. We ordered mullet (red mullet) and sea bream, both very fresh and perfectly cooked. Everything tasted great, and the service was outstanding from start to finish. That said, the prices are definitely on the high side, and the portions felt a bit small for what you pay. I understand that the whole area is generally expensive, but still, the value doesn’t fully match the cost. At some point, making a great meal for a very high price isn’t much of an achievement — if you charge enough, of course it will be good. It’s not a deal-breaker, and overall the experience was excellent, but the pricing keeps it from being a five-star spot in my opinion.

Everything was perfect! We ordered a seafood platter and lots of desserts. All the dishes were delicious, and the restaurant was so cozy, with a wonderful atmosphere. It’s such a beautiful feeling to enjoy a glass of good wine with fresh seafood by the sea, next to the shining lighthouse.

Exactly what we were looking for. Authentic restaurant just in front of the beach, no cars, nice traditional sea food and totally reasonable prices. The owners are super accommodating. A very nice experience. We will definitely come back!

Firstly, the location of this place on Google maps is wrong. It's beside Anika Apartments and not The Five Restaurant. Food was very good but service poor. The girl that was serving us seemed like she's fed up with life - quite a pity as we really liked the dishes yet we wouldn't come back due to the service. Prices are affordable and reasonable especially for a place by the beach. If you're just looking to eat something without being bothered, it's place for you. If you're looking for customer service along with good food, I don't think you'll find it here.

The food was awful, the gyros had NO tzatziki, only some disgusting yogurt on top, the meat was awful. We waited 45 minutes for 6 small gyros and when we asked how long it takes, the waiter started to yell and we waited another 25 minutes. Never again! Don’t recommend!!!!

The food wasn't the best. We had a late flight, and this was the only restaurant still open. We ordered souvlaki, and the meat was undercooked and full of gristle. We didn't eat there again.

The food was very bad, we ordered a gyros and the meat was mostly gristle. All the gyros had was gristle, a lot of onion, two pieces of tomato and a tiny bit of yogurt on top. We waited 50 minutes for the gyros and when we asked about it the waiter started to yell at us that this is a taverna (?!). Do not come here. Horrible.

The interior features bright areas with sofas and wooden tables, while guests can enjoy electro, lounge, soul, and funk music whether seated inside or outside overlooking the sea.
I had there one of the best dinner that I've ever had in my life. The food was amazing. The service was fantastic. The atmosphere could not be better. We got the balcony towards the sunset, and it was simply an incredible experience. I must say that a lot of this was due to the amazing service. We had from Yianis, who served us very well that night. I totally recommend and I hope to be back soon.

Excellent food, but frankly too pricey. Value is not there in our opinion. We ate at the best restaurants in each area we visited during our tour of Greece. This was the most expensive. Yes, the food was amazing, but we ate better elsewhere and paid less. It’s probably fine, given the amazing setting and location, but just know that it’s more money than it should be. We ordered the Pork Belly (exceptional), Pesto pasta (exceptional), 2x Uruguay Angus Steak (good, but that’s it, would not order again), sparkling moscato, and local rose. The view from our table was wonderful, but it’s loud from the passersby and dogs wandering and barking. Good one-time experience but we will not return. I highly recommend a reservation. We didn’t have one but went early enough and got lucky. While we were sitting we watched several people get turned away because the restaurant was full. Service was mostly good but we waited a bit to order, get drinks, and get break, unlike other amazing places that had flawless service.

We booked here well in advance based on a recommendation. We knew it would be pricy, but also a very memorable experience. Had dinner on the balcony overlooking the harbour. With the sun going down what a stunning vista. The young waiters were exceptional, very polite and helpful. Had the vast bean puree and taramas with fresh bread fir starters. It was all wonderful. Main course was a rib eye with greek fries and pepper sauce. Cooked perfectly. Really nice food. Dessert for us to share was chocolate mousse on a crispy base with caramel, vanilla bean ice ream and hot chocolate sauce. It didn't last long. All in all a fabulous place to eat. Our favorite meal in Chania. We dinned on the rooftop for sunset and the view, service and food were amazing. Highly recommend getting reservations here. So excited I forgot to take pictures of all our choices, the prosciutto wrapped goat cheese was amazing. For dinner we had the cod and the beef. For dessert the dulcey tart was to die for.

We got a special balcony and the view was beautiful. The food was soooo good. I haven't had this food this good in a while! It made me super happy. The Sommelier was knowledge of their wined and we had a delicious Pet Nat. Overall a wonderful restaurant.

Definitely arrived there for the views but as well very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the cuisine. Very romantic atmosphere with music on the background that makes you feel super relaxed. Salmon pave and lamb shank were outstanding, as well as, the dark chocolate dessert.

We booked for the rooftop (which is essential, many days in advance) at 22:00 and the view was spectacular - though of course would have been more picturesque on a clear day or at sunset. We were greeted by very friendly staff and seated with menus which seemed to differ slightly from what was available online. Our party of four went straight for mains given the time of day - and food was delivered promptly. I had the steak with languistines which was delicious and well-cooked - and the others each had a pasta dish which they said was fresh and yummy, though portion sizes were on the smaller side for the price. Service from the wine waiter was efficient also, though drinks did not arrive in advance of our bread which was disappointing. The bread course was pleasant though nothing to write home about. The wine when it arrived was very good. The atmosphere on the rooftop is worth paying for. Had we eaten the same floor on the ground or any other levels I'm not sure I'd have felt the same, compared to the fantastic food you can get in most places around the harbour. For the service, vibes, and atmosphere though - I'll be back!

Sketi Glyka, a beloved patisserie in Chania, has two locations where you can indulge in delectable desserts and coffee. The menu features mouthwatering treats like buttery sable biscuits with cre montee and fresh figs, as well as their take on galaktoboureko. Open until 11 pm, it's the perfect spot for a late-night sweet fix.
Its the third day on row, I’ve come here to eat and try all the desserts they have. For me one of the best is the famous “ galaktoboureko “ everyone must try it! 5/5 I definitely recommend Sketi Glyka

Lovely little cake shop hidden down a tiny street in old town Chania, with a delightful array of impressive looking cakes. A tad expensive but worth the experience. We went late in the afternoon and so cake selection was slightly diminished (per photos). We suggest getting there earlier than 16:30 if you want a bigger selection.

We were recommended this place by the owner of our hotel in Chania, he said it was the best ice cream in town and he was not wrong. I got the cinnamon apricot and my husband got the sour cherry and chocolate. I’ve never tasted a flavour as good as cinnamon apricot - it was like eating a cold apple pie - INCREDIBLE. This shop is down a lane way and is a cute little way to end the night after dinner. They even bought us water to the table with a lemon which I thought was such a nice touch. Will be back before we leave!

Very good looking cakes with some gluten free alternatives. The one with the Greek herbs was very tasty. It costs more if you want to sit down, which is not worth it and kind of make the experience a bit worse. Good ice cream as well

Museum
Nestled in the charming district of Halepa, the Archaeological Museum of Chania stands as a beacon of Crete's rich cultural heritage. This remarkable museum showcases an extensive array of artifacts that trace the island's history from the Neolithic period through to Roman times. Visitors can explore treasures unearthed from ancient sites like Kydonia and Aptera, offering a glimpse into Crete’s storied past.
New, open modern museum layout that we spent 1.5 hours wandering through. Downstairs has 3 large rooms/sections for the permanent exhibitions, which is where we spent most of our time. The downstairs temporary exhibit was closed when we were there, and the upstairs Mitsotakis collection is a small room able to be viewed in 10 minutes. Signs available in English and Greek throughout, with an audio guide also available (though we passed as the signs were great). What makes this museum unique is their recreations using authentic objects, such as a kitchen, illustrious warriors grave, and the 365 AD earthquake. Most museums provide the objects, sign, and diagrams, but they displayed it as it would’ve been which gave extra context. They also had great small touches like presenting coins so that you can see both sides, and used a non-reflective glass so it’s a LOT easier to see and take photos of the objects. (Whoever curated and displayed these rooms did an excellent job with the details!) Similar to other museums, will also see a lot of pottery, figurines, jewelry, and more. Air conditioning: Is inside. We felt comfortable throughout when around 28-30C outside. Access: Both a lift and stairs are available between the floors. Cafe: More of a fancy restaurants vs. quick museum eats. It’s table service only, upscale/pricy, and a little slow (compared to other museums, not restaurants). The views are absolutely superb, and the small pancake with mizithra cheese snack we had was excellent - but not quite what we expected when heard there was a cafe. Lockers: Available for free (it seemed) near the ground floor toilets. Toilets: Nice, clean on ground floor. Shop: Small shop. A little pricy for some items, but interesting books and kids items.

It is an absolute treasure trove of history and culture. Nestled in the beautiful district of Chalepa, the museum’s architecture alone is worth the visit—modern, elegant, and thoughtfully designed to reflect the layers of civilization it houses. Inside, the exhibits are beautifully curated, offering a fascinating journey through Crete’s rich past. From Minoan artifacts to Roman relics, each piece is presented with care and context. The layout is spacious and intuitive, making it easy to explore without feeling overwhelmed. Highly recommend spending at least two here during the day skipping beach on 30C summer days.

Excellent museum! Building looks new. Parking is on-site and free. Ticket price is €15 per adult which is more than some places but is absolutely worth every penny! Extensive inventory of exhibits going back to pre-history up to the Roman period. Lots and lots of pieces, videos, audio clips.... Staff were all forendly and helpful. Visiting exhibits very interesting too. Cafe upstairs is reasonably priced and serves good coffee and cake. 👍 You will be transported through time for at least two hours. If you are in west Crete you should really visit here.

This very new museum is a real gem! It's modern style and well laid out presentation is both beautiful and appealing. The show cases are well organized with easy to follow descriptions. It presents time lines of the area through prehistoric times to the Roman period. As a ancient history buff this museum was really perfect for me. Beautiful displays and excellent, friendly staff. It is also worth the time to view the private collections on the second floor. There is a free parking lot at the left side of the entrance. It is wheel chair accessible. Highly recommend

Quite expensive for the size of the exhibition. Modern building with some parking lots on site. Barely any people when we visited Saturday midday in October. There’s the rooms on the ground floor then one small room above.

This place is mind-boggling from a perspective of treasured it holds - if you like early pottery mosaics and jewelry this is the place for you. If you speak English or Greek,DO use the free speaker unit. It has lots of extra information on it and means you can look at things while listening. Cafe view is stunning but the few food is subpar. Woman at the desk area would spend 10 to 20 minutes with each person repeating basic info which was kind of exhausting when made the waiting queue very long for five people ..

This beautifully restored house was well worth the visit. I enjoyed learning about the life of Greece’s most fascinating and influential leader. The house is slightly outside of the tourist center of Hania but just a 10 minute cab ride and couple of blocks from the archaeological museum. Such a fascinating museum. I knew very little about this former Greek Prime Minister before but I left with such a strong impression of how important a figure he was in shaping modern Greece. The museum is beautifully set out with lots of explanations in English and Greek throughout. There are many very interesting and relevant items from his life and the bullet ridden car stands out as an example of not only his incredible personal history, but as an extraordinary exhibit. The young woman on the front desk was extremely helpful and the cafe/bar area was a lovely quiet spot to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of our tour.

Well-preserved house and well-structured exhibition with many interesting historical objects. Each one has a QR code allowing to access a description on the museum app, which is free to download. The information is available in Greek, English, German and French. I think it could be improved to contain more historical context for foreign visitors, nevertheless interesting. Plus there's also a cool space with educational games for kids in the attic.

This is definitely one of my favorite places in Chania. I am surprised how friendly the stuffs are and how well the house the preserved. All the items are well displayed, and with the app, you can scan any WR code and find out the background story behind the item. The garden is so lovely and well designed. First floor is my favorite because the book room and the room with fresco’s are absolutely amazing! The second floor is ok, but I do really like the piano and the balcony. The third floor is for presenting some of his personal belongings and some stuff made and named after him. Overall, I love this place. Highly recommend it!

Small museum, but packed with history. Signed shirts from incredible football players make it a must-visit for any fan. One of the best experiences we had in Chania. A big thank you to the owner for sharing stories from his amazing journey through the many matches he attended. And a special mention to all the signed Benfica shirts—from every Greek player who played for the club. Truly unforgettable!

Such a great place to visit while in Chania! The entrance is free but there’s so much to see for football fans. They have every national kit possible, the guy talked with us about everything they have and was such a sweetheart. He even charged our phone while there 🫶🏻 I wish we asked for his name. We are very very thankful! He promised they’ll have more souvenirs next year, hopefully we’ll visit again

The Church of Agios Nikolaos in Chania is a fascinating blend of history and architecture. Originally built as a Catholic church in the 14th century, it was later transformed into an army barracks and then a mosque during Ottoman rule. Today, it stands as an Orthodox church, showcasing the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Crete over the centuries. The building complex includes a basilica with a tall bell tower and a two-floor arcade, reflecting its rich history.
Beautiful square, a lots of greek food options coffee etc. amazing minerat. only place where you see a Bell tower and Minerat standing together. Amazing Ottoman structure, well preserved. Thanks to Chania local authority that despite locals hate towards Ottomans and Muslims you still protecting these monuments and upholding your history.

Beautiful church that’s free to enter, and wander through in a few minutes. There are no signs, but it does have some icons and art to look at. Note: There were no fans or air conditioning on when we went so it was very hot inside.

What a disappointment. This church was mentioned in the guide book and sounded interesting, having been a mosque until around 1913. Although when we arrived at the church it was closed. There are no opening times listed outside, or ironically in the guidebook.

Extremely rude staff or groundskeeper that degrades tourists. Kindness and gentleness are fruits of the Spirit, according to your own tenants. Maybe try it sometime? Shame on you and your "church" as representatives of Jesus treating people with disdain. Do better, as the world will know you by your love. John 13:34–35 - "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Hope this helps you improve.
Sydni J — Google review
A very nice place, but the man outside the church, who probably takes care of it, is extremely rude and disrespectful — completely against the values of the church and the place he represents at that moment. My girlfriend and I have a small dog (a dachshund) and we were visiting the site. I was standing with the dog at the entrance of the church when the man stopped me in a very impolite way. I immediately apologized and did not enter at all, yet he kept shouting at me aggressively. Just imagine someone behaving like that at the entrance of a church.

A very big St.Nikolaos church. Built as an orthodox Christian church and taken by the Muslims later on. The minaret is still there to remind the locals what happened. Next to the small square that has a huge platanus tree. A sign there says that on that tree the Turks hanged the bishop and a priest in 1821 during the revolution of Greece.

Elegant Dining on Chania’s Venetian Harbour Kariatis was one of the most memorable meals of our honeymoon. Nestled along the Venetian harbour, the restaurant is sophisticated yet welcoming, with candlelit tables and views of the old Kastelli wall. From the moment we arrived, the service was attentive without ever feeling rushed. We began with an Italian salad and pillowy gnocchi gorgonzola—rich, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully plated. For mains, I ordered the pappardelle with beef fillet and fresh black truffle, while my husband had the lobster and shrimp risotto with aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Both dishes were perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. Dessert was a standout too: gianduja with mango sorbet, light yet indulgent. A special thank-you to Анастасія, who was kind, engaging, and genuinely fun to chat with. Her food and wine recommendations were spot-on and added so much warmth to the evening. We ended the meal with a complimentary aperitif—a lovely final touch. Kariatis combines fine dining with heartfelt hospitality, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of Chania’s most beloved restaurants.

Absolutely stellar experience. From the start, we arrived with no reservation on a busy Saturday night and the lovely wait staff went above and beyond to create us a table out the front of the establishment. From here, we experienced excellent service, perfect food (yellow fin tuna tar tare, prosciutto salad, pizza), and an amazing cocktail (cretan spritz). We finished off with the hosts favourite dessert, which was absolutely fabulous. Could not have had a better experience, thank you so much! 29474839/10

We dined at your restaurant this evening and were initially pleased with the quick reservation we secured over the phone around 8:00 PM. The gentleman we spoke with was welcoming and provided a nice table. However, the 'Passion Fruit Mocktail' was extremely disappointing—the worst drink I've ever had. When I politely asked to exchange it for a Coke Zero, the waiter insisted on knowing why, emphasizing its popularity. Eventually, another waiter brought my Coke Zero, but the initial waiter seemed offended and ignored our table for the rest of the evening, even skipping the customary check-in about the food. The beef pasta was tasty, but the tomato and burrata pasta was just okay, and the appetizer bread was disappointing. While the other servers were professional and kind, the overall experience was marred by the initial waiter's unprofessional reaction to my drink preference. Considering the high prices, I expected better service.

Absolutely loved it here! The setting is truly beautiful and it's as good as the photos look. It filled up pretty quickly so I'd recommend booking ahead. We had the fresh Calimari and Octopus to start and they both tasted delicious and tender. You could tell it was fresh. A beautiful restaurant literally on the coast of Chania. Make sure to come by during sunset to see one of the most beautiful views of Crete. Oh and their seafood is excellent too, especially the octopus. Service was fast and respectful.

We had a fantastic late dinner here. Great food, vibe, and service. We ordered the Greek Salad, Fresh Calamari Grilled, Fresh Octopus Grilled, and around a 450g portion of fresh fish. This was a good amount of delicious food for 2 somewhat hungry people. If you're driving down here, the streets in this area are narrow (even by Cretan standards) and cobblestone and finding a parking spot might be tough. That said, the night time drive did add a bit to the overall ambience of the evening.

Delicious and fresh seafood - freshest mussels we’ve had, the octopus, red mullet and calamari were amazing too. We went just right before sunset and had a table by the sea to enjoy the view. Service was really quick - would recommend making a reservation.

The food was amazing, the ambiance is a scene from heaven during sunset. It is pretty expensive for the island but still was delicious. Calamari was the best but I have tried better octopus in other restaurants in greek islands. It was super crowded even though we went in weekday so the service was a bit slow especially we waited 40 minutes for the check.

This place is perfect! Food is amazing, view is breathtaking at sunset, setting is ideal - just some tables in an amazing location-just what you need (hope this never changes), service is quick, everybody from the staff is nice and kind and Antoni that welcomes the guest is truly a nice character. Had a wonderful time here, highly recommend! Everything is delicious and will come back for more!

Best food I've ever eaten. We got the local snapper and shared it Between 3 people. The serving size for salads was generous. I highly recommend the fishermen's salad. The atmosphere was beautiful, romantic and when the sun went down, absolutely perfect! The staff were able to fit us in even though we didn't have a reservation. We went at 7.30pm.

Vegetarian restaurant
Vegan restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Chania, To Stachi Slow Food is a delightful family-run eatery that specializes in traditional vegetarian Greek cuisine. With an impressive array of vegan options, this restaurant caters to various dietary preferences, including gluten-free dishes. The welcoming atmosphere often features the chef personally explaining the menu, making it easier for diners to choose their meals. While some may find certain dishes like pastitsio slightly different from traditional recipes, there are plenty of other enticing offerings worth exploring.
Outstanding vegetarian and vegan cuisine in Chania. The owner and his family are so dedicated in preparing everything fresh each day and with the finest quality ingredients. The Moussaka was the best I’ve had so far! We loved everything that we tried and would love to return to try everything else on the menu! A real gem… thank you Stelios and family!

The food here was on a whole other level — absolutely delicious! We wanted to try everything, so we ended up ordering way too much and were completely stuffed. The portions are generous, and the prices are very reasonable. The food has a homemade style, and you can truly feel the love and soul in every dish. Our waiter was the chef’s son — super sweet and friendly! He happily explained the dishes to us. Everything was fresh, tasty, and vegetarian. There are both vegetarian and vegan options available. Highly recommended!

Found it in a travel guide book (Marco Polo) and they did not disappoint. Very nice and generous selection of vegetarian dishes (most of them typical greek dishes). The staff was cute and nice and we got a little dessert for free at the end. This restaurant should be definitely on the list for vegetarians/vegans and those who like some change from the typical grilled fish and meat dishes on the island.

Amazing vegan and vegetarian authentic Greek food. I came here for lunch and dinner to try more of the menu and it did not disappoint. Highlights were the Stifado, boureki and mushrooms stuffed vegetables. Fast and friendly service. I definitely recommend trying out this place if you want some plant based meals.

Really tasty food! They served me beans as a meze which was super interesting and flavorful. On top of that, I got a free slice of watermelon, 🍉 such a nice touch. Definitely recommend!
Tamara M — Google review
I have so much love for this restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Everything on the menu is either vegetarian or vegan, and I believe the veggies are all from their own farm. The restaurant is a family run business, and it felt like I was eating a homemade meal at my friend’s house - portions were generous, and the food was delicious. To avoid disappointment either go early or book a table. I was lucky that I managed to get there early enough to grab a table, but I saw lots of people getting turned away as it’s not a massive restaurant. Staff were all super sweet and worked incredibly hard to keep everyone happy. I can personally highly recommend the Boureki, and the hummus was divine too.

The Maritime Museum of Crete offers a fascinating journey through the maritime history of the region, spanning from the Bronze Age to modern times. The main collection, located at the entrance to Firka Fortress, showcases models of ancient ships, fortified towns and ports under Venetian rule, shipbuilding and repair structures, as well as modern Hellenic Navy vessels. A section is dedicated to the German invasion of Crete during WWII.
A fascinating museum packed with models, instruments and information about the boats that featured in the history of Chania and Crete overall. The star exhibit is the replica of a Minoan ship. Fittingly, the museum is located within an old building associated with shipbuilding. This is definitely not a tourist trap as some called it. This is an informative museum with a special story to tell that rewards anyone who can spend the time to go through the exhibits with care and attention.
Alan D — Google review
Local-feeling museum across two floors that was heavily indexed on World War II, and felt like a collection of models and objects vs. a narrative story or overview of maritime in Crete. We spent about 30-35 minutes wandering through, not doing in depth reading as the English signs were a little off given typos or unclear meaning given the vocabulary or phrasing used. It also felt extremely nationalistic Greek at times (to the point of almost being propaganda). There is also no AC and some rooms without fans, so wouldn’t go at the hotter times of day. However it’s like a good fit if you like ship models or World War II objects, as there were many ship models (centuries ago through World War II), and unique WWII objects to see like radars, binoculars, uniforms, photos, and a small model of a destroyer bridge. It’s located on the edge of the Venetian harbour and has good views from the upper floor. Other people were there but it didn’t feel overly crowded. Toilets available upstairs, which were stocked and mostly clean. No cafe or drinks onsite.
Becky T — Google review
Set at the entrance of the Venetian harbour, the building itself feels like a guardian of memory, a quiet reminder of how deeply the sea has shaped Crete’s history and spirit. As I moved through the rooms, I was struck by the sense of continuity from the ancient Minoan sailors to the Venetian fleets and the brave Cretan seafarers of World War II. The museum isn’t just a collection of artefacts; it’s a story of courage, resilience, and identity told through ships, maps, and photographs. The detailed ship models, handcrafted with care, seemed almost alive, as if ready to sail into history once more. What touched me most was the balance between pride and melancholy. The sea, which brought trade and connection, also carried conflict and loss — and the museum captures that duality beautifully.
Panayiotis M — Google review
This musuem hold an outstanding array of memorabilia, model ships, pictures and paintings, shells, nautical instruments etc. on two floors, so there are stairs to climb. It costs €4 for an adult ticket and there is no time limit to your visit. There are public toilets on the first floor. There is lots of information to read, and a video to watch (with English subtitles), however there are a few exhibits with information only in Greek. Overall a good couple of hours.
Julie P — Google review
Visited this museum with a couple hours spare during a few days in Chania and was pleasantly surprised. Cheap entry (less than £5 equivalent), and a myriad of exhibitions on Chania and Greece's naval history (militarily and otherwise). Some of the exhibition boards are woefully out of date and I'm pretty sure there's at least one board which is borderline offensive with regards to how it speaks about non-orthadox religions, in particular Islam. Broadly the layout of the museum on the ground floor is sensible, by era - though you do have to move non-intuitively to do it 'in order'. Upstairs is where the real showpiece of the museum is (for me) - the content, artefacts, ancdotes, and exhibits on the World Wars are fascinating and worth the admission price alone. I wouldn't visit again - but would reccomend it for anyone interested in finding out more about Greece's military history on water and its complicated relationship with naval tradition.
Harry B — Google review
An interesting and very patriotic maritime museum in the centre of Chania. Quite old fashioned, lacking much of a narrative and heavily reliant on ship models. It's good value at only 5 euros for adults. I found the English translations very funny though because of how terrible they are, many errors and it uses soaring patriotic language which made me laugh.
Henry ( — Google review
An impressive collection of models as well as other memorabilia making the visit certainly worth. One can walk through very fast (30 minutes) but equally can spend 2 hours if interested in details. Note worthy is the location as well as the views from the windows.

The Etz Hayyim Synagogue is a restored synagogue with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. After being lovingly restored in the 1950s following a pause in operation after the Holocaust, it now welcomes visitors. While currently under renovation, its caring staff bring its history to life and make visitors feel at home. The synagogue is tucked away in the old town and offers views from the nearby medieval Schiavo Bastion.
Beautiful historic synagogue that has been restored to former look. It has a rich heritage that has been preserved by the local community. Very welcoming of visitors as well.

Lovely old synagogue tucked away in the side streets of the old town. What it lacks in visual appeal (currently under renovation), it makes up for in lovely, caring staff. They went out of their way to make me feel at home and brought the history to life.

The Folklore Museum of Chania, situated near the Catholic Church in the Old City, offers a glimpse into daily life in Chania during the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum showcases traditional tools, crafts, and cultural artifacts from that era. Visitors can explore themed rooms such as the kitchen and bridal bedroom.
A little hidden treasure trove of historical items dealing with everyday Cretan life through the ages. Beautifully presented in a tiny house. Amazing collection of historical postcards, books and embroidery. Entry fee of €3. Gorgeous little lady looking after the museum works upstairs, making the most intricate silk embroidery and happily chatted about the pieces. They are also for sale and make a wonderful souvenir to take home that is 100% locally and traditionally made. Note: Lots of narrow stairs, so not wheelchair accessible.
Mari C — Google review
A very small museum consisting of a few rooms. It took us 10 minutes to look around it all. The woman demonstrating machine embroidery was the only interesting part. I work in an open air folk museum in Wales so perhaps my expectations were too high.
Ellen E — Google review
It could be much more interesting. A lot of nice items arranged somehow in 4 rooms. It worth the price though
Milena G — Google review
It's not the best and most modern museum in the world but it's still worth visiting. It's a tiny musem hidden very close to the touristic area of Chania. The tickets are only 3 euro, and it's an honest price for small and quite dated exhibition - still has many interesting details regarding folklore arts such as basket weaving, loom weaving, or tailoring. The main reason for visit in this museum is that one of the rooms is a studio of an embroidery artist (apologies but I didnt catch her name). The embroidery paintings she is creating with silk thread are something absolutely fenomenal. Combination of folk, naive style with craft mastery is mind-blowing. I honestly had tears in my eyes. You can watch the artist work there and admire some of her works (and they are for sale too). Just a note - to enter the museum you need to climb some steps and inside another set of narrow and steep stairs.
Maja Z — Google review
A little hidden gem! The museum is very small and shoehorned into a quirky building just off the main street. When we were there, two ladies were working away, making delightful embroidery.
Mike N — Google review
I was recently in Chania and was delighted to visit the Folklore Museum. It was very cheap to visit and once inside there was so much history and so many stories from another time. The highlight of the visit was to see Irene, who put together the artefacts in the museum from her long career in textiles and machine embroidery. Indeed you can meet her and watch her creating original and enchanting pictures, cushions and bags which are for sale. It is not often you can meet and watch someone making such imaginative and novel depictions of a time gone by. Truly a one off.
Heather L — Google review
This is a wonderful little place. It has been put together with love, and that comes through in everything. 'Official' museums in Crete have some tremendous artefacts and are very scholarly -- nothing wrong with that -- so they can come across as, well, a bit … dry, but the Folklore Museum is joyful. Looking at the multitude of items, it felt as if one was touching the lives of people who made and used them. We visited in April 2022 when it cost 3 euros to enter, and I'd say it's the best thing that you can get in Chania for that price!
Michael G — Google review
Tiny museum completely filled with hand embroidery traditional patterns. Some rooms explaining agricultural practices and how an old kitchen looked like. Also some info on textile production in the past. Hidden among the busy streets in a side alley. Definitely worth a short visit if you like to discover unique places.

The Byzantine/Post-Byzantine Collection of Chania, housed in the 15th-century San Salvatore church, offers an intimate look at the region's history through a diverse array of artifacts. From mosaics and wall paintings to statues, coins, and religious items, the museum provides insight into the Byzantine, post-Byzantine, and Venetian eras. Visitors can explore relics from early Christian churches and gain understanding of Cretan civilization after Roman colonization.
Small but very interesting to explore and learn about the intricacies of the Cretan history of the museum. The opportunity to see monuments from the Byzantine era, the Venetian state and later is very appealing to the imagination.

This Byzantine Museum Collection was fascinating, the collection of artefacts that date back between 400-800AD is astounding. €5 entry on the door as of May 2025 - €10 well spent for me & my wife. When exploring the charming streets of Chania Old Town, a visit to Ela is an absolute must for anyone craving traditional Cretan cuisine. Nestled in a historic building that dates back to the medieval era, this restaurant offers a delightful seafood meze board that's perfect for sharing and indulging. The ambiance is warm and inviting, making it an ideal spot to savor authentic Greek flavors like moussaka and gyros served with fresh tzatziki.
This is an amazing traditional greek taverna. Food is local and it’s cooked amazingly! It is located in a very nice central street with lots of greenery! Ambient is very pleasant and nice. Service was very fast and good! Stuff is nice and willing to help. I give them a big recommendation! 🤗

We enjoyed our lunch here. Seating options available outside on the street or in the restaurant. Very interesting venue, set in a burnt out house with exposed stone walls, missing roof and burnt trusses. The staff was friendly and helpful in helping us to choose our dishes. The grilled sea bass we had was cooked to perfection, with a light smoky char outside and moist tender meat inside. The golden fries were also nicely crispy outside. Price is very reasonable especially considering this is a touristy location.

Simply the best food we had during our week in Crete, so much so we went back a second time. Melting in your mouth lamb, perfectly prepared vegetables, everything was amazing! The place also is really beautiful, located in an old burned down building, it's definitely a pleasure to dine here! If you are looking for a traditional taverna in Chania, this is the one!

Lovely place. We wanted to go here as it's one of the oldest tavern in Chania. The Bougainvillaea is so beautiful to sit underneath and eat the Lovely food. Will definitely return.

The atmosphere is very nice, there are about 4 places where you can sit and each has a different atmosphere. You can sit inside, outside in the middle of the street, hidden in the corner of a street and last a place where you are kinda out of the way but still have a nice view. The food is good and you can get the menu on different languages. The staff know some words in each language so they are fun to talk to

Kalderimi is a modern restaurant located in the alleys of the old town by Theotokopoulou Street. It offers traditional Cretan-Mediterranean cuisine with full flavors. Visitors have praised the fantastic food, including Italy-worthy pasta dishes and unexpected delicious ravioli with truffles, mussels, and Saganaki. The restaurant's lovely ambiance and excellent service make it a great spot for a meal while exploring Chania on Crete.
This restaurant is a hidden gem, tucked away in the back streets of old town Chania. You HAVE to visit here if you are in Crete, the food and the service was 10/10. The Greek salad was amazing, the best one I’ve ever had. My partner had the lamb for mains and said it was the best meal he had the over the 10 days we have been on holiday here. Everything was delicious, make sure to visit!

This was the best place I ate in 5 days in Crete. Most flavorful salad, excellent pasta dish, and the panna cotta was divine. Better than Pallas we went to earlier in the week by a mile.
Aashiv B — Google review
Food was good and prices were in line with those in Chania city centre, but the service was a bit lacking. In most Greek restaurants, it’s customary to be offered a small treat after the meal, such as a shot of raki or a sweet bite. Unfortunately, nobody bothered to bring us anything, even though we spent over €130 on our meal. Don’t get me wrong – I can easily pay for raki or dessert myself – but it’s a nice and very common gesture across Greece, and even much smaller, cheaper restaurants do it as a simple way of saying “thank you for dining with us.” That’s the reason for the 4-star rating.
Mariusz W — Google review
Amazing food and very beautiful restaurant! I’d especially recommend the shrimp saganaki , the were the best we had the entire trip! Very nice staff . We’d definitely come back next year

Great service and reasonable price. My partner had the mushroom ravioli and it was fantastic. I had the steak which was unfortunately recommended medium and served more towards well. Otherwise it would easily be a 5 star review.

Kalderimi is a lovely restaurant at the edge of Chania‘s Old Town. The food is amazing, the service is friendly and quick and the design and interior are very chic and tasteful. I had the tangy, zesty fish carpaccio as a starter and the lamb cooked in wine and herbs. Both dishes were more than great! The fish was very fresh and the lamb cooked so softly that it just slipped off the bone! I highly recommend this place.

A gem of a restaurant. We ate in a number of good restaurants while we were in Crete, but this one we went back to 3 times as we so enjoyed the food, the choice of wine and knowledgable team who were great at suggesting wines for each dish. Lovely atmosphere, wonderful food and a lovely welcome. Best to book ahead if you can - even if it’s for just a bit later the same evening. Grilled shrimp with lemon and with parsley gremolata a particular favourite. 😍

No aircon inside the main room for a children's party, the meat was way too well done and dry. Prompt service though, very polite staff.

€ 7,- ticket (Tuesday € 3,50) Big screen, nice place Best Cinema in Chania

Good bowling however person who served us saw we weren’t from Crete and did not smile, was extremely rude and anytime we asked for help (which was once to buy drinks) he was dismissive and acted like we were a nuisance. Then acted arrogantly and extremely spiteful. Terrible customer service and I will never come back.

Indiana Movie was broken. It had one annoying red stripe during half of the movie. Also smoking is allowed and it is very annoying if someone is smoking next to you!! They should ban smoking, there are kids in the area!

Allied War Cemetery Souda Bay is a serene and solemn place that pays tribute to the 1,500 Commonwealth servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II, including the Battle of Crete. Situated at Vlites position near Souda port, this beautifully landscaped cemetery hosts annual ceremonies in honor of the war victims. The well-maintained grounds feature crisp yellow-white graves bearing the names of soldiers and offer a poignant view of Souda Bay.
This cemetery is a fitting tribute to all the service men from across the common wealth who gave their lives. Shocking to see row upon row of very young men. We will remember them. The caretakers do an amazing job at keeping it pristine.

I wasn’t going to do this post as wasn’t sure how I felt, our families recommended that we make the trip to Souda Bay allied war cemetery whilst we were in Crete and whilst we felt very somber whilst there, it just makes you feel thankful. It’s incredibly well kept, but there are some 700 headstones with no names which I found difficult. I couldn’t imagine how that must feel for the families. It’s definitely worth a visit just to pay your respects.

Made a point of visiting here (at last) and made a special point to find the grave of Ted d'Auvergne who fell in the invasion of Crete ( his poignant story is worth looking up). Beautifully kept place and a place for contemplation.

We visited the Commonwealth Cemetery from WWII. It was very moving in a quiet, solemn atmosphere. The beautiful grounds were well-manicured in the banks of the Aegean Sea. What a wonderful tribute to the men who gave their lives in the Battle of Crete of May. These brave soldiers were part of the resistance operations against the Nazi troops in Crete, Greece, a small island in the Aegean Sea. Over 1,500 soldiers from Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and India lost their lives. The Crete Commonwealth has given these soldiers a proper burial and a wonderful tribute to these brave men who list their lives. These men paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom - their lives. We were glad we visited the Allied WWII Cemetery in Crete in the quietness of just our group of 6 people first thing in the morning before tour buses started arriving. As we were leaving 4 tours were pulling in.

A beautifully maintained CWGC cemetery with amazing views over Suda Bay. A fitting place for these casualties to rest.

As all war cemeteries there is always a lingering sense of sadness for all who have lost their lives so we could live our. Suda bay cemetery is literally few meters from the sea and is carefully maintaned, giving a sense of peace to those who come and pay a visit. Hopefully those who rest there, can feel an aeternal peace. Fair wind and following seas.

A surprisingly peaceful and moving memorial to the fallen. Very well maintained. Our second visit in 26 years and just as touching as the first time

We think the Allied War Cemetery Souda Bay is a peaceful yet somber place. The view of the bay is lovely and the cemetery is peaceful and very well kept. Some of the tombstones show the age of the serviceman and it is surprising to me how young these men were. All too many of the stones are marked Unknown Soldier, Known but to God. We truly enjoyed our visit.

The Museum of Typography in Tsikalaria, Greece, is a fascinating destination for typography and printing enthusiasts. Located in the Industry Park and Art Village, this museum showcases an impressive collection of printing presses, machines, tools, and objects related to typography. The exhibits span from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, offering a comprehensive look at the history of printing. Visitors can explore various typography styles through woodcuts and journalistic articles on display.
It’s a hidden gem of Cretan history. It might be on your way to Chania or Rethymno (depending on where you stay) but it’s definitely worth a visit. Tickets: 5€/person Time: ~45 mins Showrooms: 4 It covers a great deal of techniques and has printing presses ranging from Gutenberg’s press (replica) through 18-19 century presses to late 20 century Macintosh build. You’ll learn how first printing presses were setup with letters (one by one) with different sizes of letters and spaces. Then how in the next step of presses evolution they used automatic letter arrangement based on the key pressed before the letters were placed in the printing machine. Then after that they will show you a machine that used coded strip (like first computers - tapes with holes where each hole represents a letter or character) which was, after it was coded on one machine, placed in the printing machine which reads the code and puts the corresponding letters in place for printing on the paper. Etc etc :)

We discovered the museum when zooming in on Google maps and made a last minute decision to go visit which unfortunately meant we arrived 45mins before closing. Staff were welcoming and our ticket included a tour which included an opportunity to use some of the printing devices. The museum has some great installations as well as their core collection with lots of explanation from staff. Sadly there was no opportunity to wander and look at items ourselves but the collection is impressive. Well worth a visit but make sure to give yourself enough time.

My motto, “always stay open for new things to come into your life,” proved right again. This private museum turned out to be a real highlight of our day. It’s run by the same family who publish the local Chania newspaper — passion and expertise wrapped into one. Over the years, they’ve collected authentic printing presses and related machines, creating a living showcase of how the industry evolved. You see everything from stamp-making tools and stone- or skin-printing slabs, to engraving equipment and even the telefax — the ancestor of the fax machine. It’s fascinating to follow the timeline through real, tangible objects. Our guide was Penny, who also manages social media for both the newspaper and the museum. She’s knowledgeable, kind, and professional, but also warm and engaging — the perfect combination. The tour itself is structured and informative, with just the right balance of detail and storytelling. There’s also a charming little museum shop with stamps, books, pencils, and posters (yes, of course we bought one as a souvenir). We even noticed a small café corner, adding to the welcoming feel. Practical notes: tickets are only €5, which is a bargain. Tours run every hour, and you can’t free-roam — but the guided format actually adds value. The last tour starts at 13:30 since they need time to close up by 15:00. If you’re in Chania and curious about history beyond the usual, this place is a gem. Highly recommend.

Very special place, highly recommend to visit! Professional and very empathic guide in Greek and English, Mrs Helena - thank You! The museum is private and reminds everyone that in everyday life there is always space for great ideas and their realization. I’m in awe and grateful to the owners and team!

A hidden gem of a museum. I was welcomed and quickly added to an ongoing tour, as you can only visit with a guide, which provided some context around the museum and some of the exhibits. It is a vast private collection of the history of typesetting snd print, owned and run by a local newspaper owner and his wife. I was amazed by the many machines and documents they have managed to collect, many items gifted to the museum. Features a replica Guttenberg press, and a whole host of other printing machines and typesetting devices going up until the late 90s, when computers and digital printing took over. Also features a small collection of photographic devices, which included a camera my parents owned when I grew up, conjuring up many memories. If you are into art & design, don‘t miss this!

A fascinating insight into all aspects of typography and printing. There is also detailed exhibits relating to photography particularly in relation to publication. Additionally there is an exhibition/project related to the history of writing from prehistoric times to the present day. The visit is personally guided (for us in English) and pur guide was excellent, knowledgeable and helpful (we are sorry but we forgot your name). This museum is well worth a visit.

Pyropháni is a charming restaurant located in Crete, offering an authentic and non-touristy dining experience. The establishment is popular among locals, indicating its genuine appeal. Visitors can expect exceptional service and delectable food, including irresistible bread. With a tranquil ambiance and picturesque sea views, it's an ideal spot to savor delicious meals while enjoying meaningful conversations. Despite minor issues like finding a hair in the salad, guests generally appreciate the overall experience and value for money.
In search for a non touristic restaurant on Crete (it's harder as you may think), I've come across this restaurant. It was full and we were the only non locals. The food was amazing and the service was exceptional and they bread they put on the table is really to die for. If I ever return to Crete I'll definitely pass by again. You'll really feel welcome here!

This place has some great food and a good view. The restaurant is fairly quiet so you can enjoy the food and conversation without having to compete with others around you. We did find a hair in our salad that was bad but overall the experience was good.

We stopped here on our way from Agia Triada Monastery. Great food & kind service right on the beach. Try their “small fish plate” (great for 4p and indeed too much for two) or “big” one (enough to feed a very hungry army 😆) it’s quite a memorable dish!

Pyrophani offers a beautiful setting right on the water overlooking Souda Bay. The restaurant has a playground for kids, and offers outdoor seating on a nicely manicured grass lawn. The food was good, although a bit on the pricey side compared to similar restaurants. Worth stopping if you're in the area.

Restaurant
Fournaki Casa Di Gusto is an impressive establishment where one can enjoy a variety of delicious options such as pizza, pasta, salads, and crepes. This hidden gem was stumbled upon by chance but left a lasting impression. The reasonably priced medium-sized pizza and Cesar's salad came with complimentary freshly baked bread served alongside olive paste and fresh tomato sauce as dips.
The food here is delicious. The menu is extensive, with a lot of options. We've eaten here twice, and will be back. We've eaten pasta, pizza, bread and salad here. All the items were flavorful and delicious. The people are very nice and charming, just a little slow to acknowledge you. They really do very well at communicating in English, which is extremely kind. We never got more water to drink, but we could have easily asked. I believe the slow acknowledgement and greeting is more of a cultural thing since it seems to happen a lot. Once they do start talking to you they're lovely people. As with most Greek restaurants, after the meal, they offer you a free bite of something sweet and the traditional alcohol called raki. We usually let them know we don't drink alcohol, and it's fine. Also, Greeks are very social and never in a hurry to get you to leave. So, when you're done you'll just need to let them know you're ready to pay. I also enjoyed the music they play because it's not Americanized. Definitely a great casual dining choice.

The pizza was delicious and the side dish bread was awesome, still dream about it. The prices are fair. Round about 13€ for a 30cm Pizza. They forgot to bring the main dish and did not ask once if we need any thing while we sat for at least 30min in fornt empty dishes. They were still friendly and after I asked if they forgot about us, they checked the order and noticed it....15 min later was an awesome delicious pizza in front of us (look at the pictures). I would recommend that restaurant =).

My preferred place to eat in all of Chania. The pizza is the best! The place is very straight forward, clean and efficient. Big variety of food and the pizza is cooked in a wood oven. All the plates are tasty whether it pasta grilled meat or oven plates. Prices are very reasonable and totally worth what you get for it. Nice place to fill space 8n your stomach before boarding the night boat ;p

"From the moment you step into fournaki casa DI GUSTO the inviting aroma of freshly baked pizza immediately captivates your senses. Not only is their food mouth-wateringly delicious, but the portions are incredibly generous, ensuring that you leave with both your hunger and heart satisfied. The ambiance exudes warmth and friendliness, making it the perfect spot for family gatherings or a casual evening out with friends. All in all, this place is a true gem for pizza lovers and those seeking a delightful dining experience! The photo has 40cm pizza with 1€ coin for reference - big big!
