This basilica and the village it is located in are worth a very large detour. We stayed there in middle October, with still great weather, very quiet but impressive.

The Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Vézelay is absolutely breathtaking. Its Romanesque architecture and peaceful light fill the space with a sense of awe and serenity. Walking up the hill to the basilica feels like a quiet pilgrimage through history. The view over the Burgundy countryside is unforgettable. A truly spiritual and moving place to visit.

A quiet, un spoilt hilltop town with a beautiful basilica. Free to wander round and take in the atmosphere. The start for many pilgrims. I am not religious but I was strangely moved by the experience of wandering round this place of pilgrimage. A relic of Mary Magdalen is on view in the beautiful crypt.

Wonderful Romanesque/Gothic structure. It was empty when we arrived at 9 am on a Mondy. Striking nave in its simplicity. Don't miss the crypt under the altar where they claim to have some of Mary Magdeline's remains. The viewpoint at the back of the building is also worth the short walk.

Today we have visited “la basilique de Sainte Madeleine” in Vezelay. Our guide was Christopher of “La Maison du Visiteur de Vezelay”. It was for us the third time we’ve visited Vezelay and we thought we knew already a lot about the basilique but today we have learned a lot of very important things about the architecture and the meaning of various symbols that were used hundreds of years ago. Christopher had a well structured explanation, took his time for all our questions and showed us “the path of light”. Really impressing. Afterwards we went back to “La Maison” and there we had a very instructive lightshow and an amazing film. We are so glad that we’ve decided to let us been guided by Christopher. We had a fabulous tour with Christopher, he brought alive the intricacies of the Basilica and had us totally absorbed. We would thoroughly recommend taking a tour, the building is amazing and a guided tour showed us details we would never have learnt about ourselves. The afternoon flew past and our guide was very generous with his time and knowledge.

It was surprising to experience the guides of 'La Maison du Visiteur'. Christopher in particular guided us with great passion in a world of symbolism, wisdom, light and love in an accessible warm hearted en calm way. He broadened our understanding of the Basilica of Light wich made me feel how heaven and earth are intertwined in this building and although the Basilica dates back to the 12th century, it is so alive and 'up to date' in our contemporary world. I cannot recommend strongly enough a stop at La Maison du Visiteur for anyone visiting Vézelay, whether it be for the first or the tenth time. Unlike many traditional guides, the staff at the La Maison understand that visitors need not only to learn about the history of the Basilica, but also to feel a link between the creators of the church and their own lives. And this is exactly what they do: they take us beyond an understanding of the Basilica's marvelous architecture and sculpture, to a place where we sense a personal connection (whatever our own religious beliefs may be) to the sculptural and architectural representations of the inner struggles that all people face in their lives. In this way the visit becomes a journey toward a deeper understanding of ourselves, all while learning about the glories of French Romanesque art and architecture.

We went for a generally informative introduction into the visit to the basilic, but together with that, and completely unexpectedly, we got a magnificent spiritual initiation into the riches and splendeur of this beautiful temple. It’s managed by people who profoundly love and uphold the basilic and are willing to share their love and their passion. It was a deeply moving experience. I should mention, to much of our surprise, our two teenage boys were equally impressed.

I arrived at the centre and met the wonderful Christopher who introduced me to the centre and the wonderful Film Sur le Grand Tympan. I can honestly say it is an incredible experience which brought the facade to life. Music, poetry and the sheer imagery experience is not to be missed a spiritual experience. It played in English which helped greatly.

Awesome time with Christopher discovering the Vézelay Abbey (Basilique Sainte Madeleine). We were expertly guided from the Maison du visiteur to the Abbey and then back for a very nice lightshow putting everything we learnt into perspective.

Excellent small museum with works of Picasso...

A fabulous small modern art museum in the little burg of Vezelay, France. On display are many works by Picssso, Calder, Giacometti, Dufy, and several others. The museum building itself is ultramodern inside and has an outdoor "contemplation garden" on one floor. The museum is truly a gem!

This was a total surprise. A fantastic collection. Beautifully exhibited.

People who came after us received meal before us. We had 2 small hungry kids and it was just ridiculous. The food was OK, even though the beef bourguignon wasn't cooked well and it was very hard to chew.

This is a great find! It is a lovely place to eat; we came here for a wedding anniversary lunch. They have an indoor dining room and a lovely outdoor terrace which is super on a sunny day in summer (or at any other time of year in good weather). It has two sides to its menu: on the one hand traditional bourguinon dishes with prix-fixe menus at €19 for the Menu du Jour and €25 for the Menu du Terroir; and on the other hand a classic Crèperie with a good range of galettes and crèpes. Vaut la visite!

If this is your dying meal and you have nowhere to go after but … up…. Yes I might eat here. Because the service is so slow you will absolutely be having your last meal. Food was fine. Some plates better than others.

Had a delightful Sunday lunch here. Organic options (including wines) and I was even able to have a delicious vegetarian meal. We hadn't booked but the very helpful and friendly waitress accommodated us and our dog. A very enjoyable experience in a gorgeous, atmospheric village.

A friend and I visited Vézeley for a week in February 2024. One way or the other we found ourselves walking through the front door of Le P’tit V almost every night…and being received with a warm welcome and an excellent glass (or bottle) of wine. We can’t recommend this establishment highly enough!

Awesome place! We were a group of 10 people and stumbled upon this place while looking for a bar in the evening and it was perfect! Very kind service by the two owners who had a chat with us, delicious wines (all locally produced!) and a fantastic arrangement of local cheeses. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the wine and food. Can definitly recommend it and wish you guys good luck for the future!

I didn't expect that kind of quality in so touristic place. It was elegant location, and delicious food.

This is a wonderful hotel right in the heart of Vezelay. It is a little complicated to get to, but the instructions provided helped us make it just fine. You can drop off your luggage after driving up the hill on the "residents only" road. Then you park about a 1/2 km away. The hotel host/manager was very welcoming and helpful. She made dinner reservations for us and provided other local insights. The room was an eclectic combination of 18th century decor with a marvelous, modern bathroom. It was very quiet The hotel is located just a block down from the famous basilica. We skipped the breakfast which was offered at 19 euros as we had eaten late the night before.

A very pleasant hotel and restaurant. The food and the wine were excellent and reasonably priced. The staff was courteous and responsive to any requests. The room is not air-conditioned, so a stay in the heat of summer may be less enjoyable. All-in-all, however, a good place to stay. We will return.

**Not the ideal place if you’re a vegetarian** The food was good and the service too, and the restaurant is ideally located in front of the church in Vezelay. Their terrace is lovely too. If you’re vegan or vegetarian however, I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant. There is only one salad that’s vegetarian and you’ll probably still be hungry when you leave. I asked if we could order sides of the vegetables that were in other dishes (dauphinois and/or risotto), but I was told it wasn’t possible. Had I been an omnivore, I would have loved the place. But I felt quite frustrated with the lack of options/flexibility, and left hungry. I didn’t want to stuff myself with desert just because I couldn’t have a meal that was filling enough.

Restaurant review only - very good food (thank you), two great waiters (thank you) but a third waiter very rude. Abrupt with us, then saw and heard him snarling at two older women who were doing their best to speak French. Unnecessary behaviour.

Food was disappointing, especially given the steep price. For starters we had a pissaladière (€ 10,50) which turned out to be a tiny, bitesized version of the original dish from Nice with a bit of salad on the side. Main was trout with black rice and blood orange sauce (€ 26) which was a bit too buttery and unbalanced in taste, in my opinion.

Interesting visit just slightly marred for us by two coach tours visiting whilst we were there which meant that some of the rooms were virtually inaccessible when the large (~30-40 people) groups were having their guided tours so we had to wait until they had moved on. Incidentally Google Maps states that there is a restaurant - there isn't. You can get a small Nespresso coffee for €1.50 but that's all.

If you like to know about the history of the region, and France, this chateau , the home of Vauban, is well worth visiting.

A grand old hotel, unfortunately "updated" to a more modern look. I've stayed many times since 1960. Marvelous views of the countryside. Located at the beginning of the ancient village of Vézelay, where the cathedral at the top is absolutely magnificent.

A very charming building located in the heart of the mythical Vézelay. Our room was great. Facing the backyard, we had a delightful view of the fields. The room was quiet and very clean, with comfortable and spacious beds. Good breakfast buffet and delicious diner. Friendly and attentive staff:bottles of water were offered in every day of our stay. These little attentions make the whole difference!

Reception at the hotel was somewhat underwhelming, the receptionist was "snooty" ... even pretentious, not a great start of our stay! At the restaurant an apertive on the terrace was impossible, only service inside, food was good but meagre portions for a sturdy price. There is potential here ...

Room: The room we stayed in was clean. It had an old theme which was nicely done. Our room didn't have a mini fridge which was a dissapointment. Our airconditioning didnt get cold enough for our taste and broke during the first night. After telling this to the reception it was fixed within the hour. Our bathroom was great and spacious. The soundproofing isn't great however. Breakfast: 20 euro is a lot for what you actually get. There was no Nutella and the bread was empty quickly when you were a bit later. Garden: The garden was not maintained well. It's very big but there are weeds everywhere. It has a amazing potential but it's not there. Location: Location of the hotel is great! Nothing bad to say about it. Staff: The staff was friendly but didn't feel sincere.

The room was clean but very trite given its price. The bathroom was uncomfortable and the shower leaked all over the floor. The air conditioning was very noisy and the sewage constantly made noises that continued throughout the whole of the night. When I called prior to my arrival, the receptionist was arrogant and rude, and failed to help me find a place to dine. N.B. The weekend of August 15th the restaurant closes at 9PM! Although the website says that due to Covid-19 breakfast would be served at the table, the hotel still only offers a buffet. There aren’t nearly enough waiters to provide a decent service. I strongly advise against sitting on the terrace as we were assailed by dozens of wasps, which the staff did nothing to stop or limit. As a final touch, in the morning I found a fine on my windshield because the hotel failed to mention that the parking lot next to the establishment was not theirs, but public. Given it’s price and reputation, I expect much more from this hotel and was extremely disappointed.

We had a room in an annex, that was quite large, but had only a tiny window and no view. The design of the room was outdated, the carpet was stained, a hanging lamp was positioned low and awkwardly. A tap in the bathroom was loose and the shower lacked warm water. The location of the hotel is really good and the facade promises much, but the hotel isn't cheap. For those prices the hotel should be able to offer a much better experience.

The Hotel de la Poste is old fashioned, comfortable and charming. The rooms are clean as a whistle with good linens. The view from our room, over the backyard and out to the hillside pasture beyond was delightful. The concierge was polite, helpful and spoke English very well. I can recommend anyone to stay here who is not wedded to the brand-new and modern... I only subtracted one point from the Decor score because it is not a luxe hotel, but a good bourgeois hotel.

Last week, on a sunny autumn day, we had a seat at on empty table here. After a few minutes a very rude waiter came out and placed a sign “ reserve” on our table. No talking, no service, nothing…..all you can do after such an experience is to leave and never come back again.
