Baceno in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Baceno, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Baceno is a small Alpine village in northern Piedmont, known as a gateway to the Devero Valley and the Alpe Devero Natural Park, with its hiking trails, mountain pastures and winter sports. The village itself features traditional stone houses and the parish church of San Gaudenzio, noted for its Romanesque elements and interior frescoes. Nearby natural attractions such as the Orridi di Uriezzo gorges and scenic mountain roads make it a good base for exploring the Ossola valleys and surrounding peaks.
With favorites like Casa del Cappellano "Don Amedeo Ruscetta", Trattoria Cistella, and Ristorante Pizzeria Campagna, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Trattoria Cistella and Hotel Meuble 'Vecchio Scarpone so you can get the best taste of Baceno while you’re here. The Orridi di Uriezzo, also known as the Ravines of Uriezzo, is a natural wonder located in the Ossola valley. Formed during the last glaciation, these ravines were created by streams that eroded the rock over time, resulting in narrow valleys and meandering gorges. With the retreat of glaciers, the watercourses withdrew, leaving behind this unique geological formation that can now be easily explored on foot.
Beautiful area to take photos, go for a walk, and swim.

Carefull! Today we got stunned multiple times without reason by a huge (probably European but could also be an Asian-) hornet, at the spot of below pictures (up hill Marmitte dei Giganti, see circle). Could be defending a nest? The hike was nice, ~ 3KM , if you start from the Oratorio di Santa Lucia and follow below route.

Gorgeous place to visit. Ten minutes walk from Premia parking. Unique canyon and a great spot for a summer bath.

During the last glaciation (which ended about 12,000 years ago), the Antigorio Valley was occupied by the extensive Toce Glacier. Countless streams flowed downstream of it, which over time have eroded the rock, generating narrow valleys and meandering gorges. With the retreat of the glaciers, the streams also withdrew and left what are today the Orridi di Uriezzo. Currently, in fact, the watercourses no longer flow within them and it is therefore possible to visit them easily on foot. is one of the most attractive canyons in Piedmont

Stunning! Amazing place! I wish to go back!!!

The "Orridi di Uriezzo" are deep gorges "dug" into the rock by streams that once flowed from the glacier that occupied the Formazza Valley. The walls are carved by the swirling motion of water and violent waterfalls. In some places they are so closed to each other that you cannot see the sky, forming niches and grooves.

Area Sosta Camper - Alpe Devero is a serene spot that offers essential services, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking tranquility amidst nature. While winter temperatures may limit some amenities, visitors can still enjoy the refreshing sound of the nearby river and access to a water fountain in the pro loco area. The site is conveniently located near the town center, ensuring easy access to local attractions.
Stayed in winter. Only van there. €10 for 12hrs including electric and bins. No water services in winter as it would freeze. This is stated on the website. Very good. Need cash to pay. Don't know about the shower and toilet situation. Next to a nice stream and there were fun goats and horses nextdoor.

(Translated by Google) If you want tranquility with just the sound of the river, this is the ideal place. Fully equipped area near the town center, nothing is missing. Be careful because Google maps takes you to a narrow road that is forbidden to campers. Don't go to Via Riviera but take the first road on the left, however there is a sign indicating the parking area. Chiesa Monumentale San Gaudenzio is a historical monument dating back to the 13th century, featuring Romanesque-Gothic architecture. The interior boasts five naves and stunning frescoes. The church offers a spiritual ambiance and picturesque views of the mountains and town. Visitors can embark on a scenic trek through the woods from an arch next to the church, leading to the breathtaking Uriezzo ravines and giants' potholes in just 15-20 minutes.

The museum also showcases the intriguing story of Don Amedeo Ruscetta, known as the "viper priest," who had a deep passion for reptiles and nature.

Ex Funivia Goglio Alpe Devero is a cable car station in Goglio, featuring frescoes that pay tribute to the Resistance and a small museum dedicated to the partisan Republic of Ossola. The station was once the departure point for a cable car transporting Edison's staff to Alpe Devero. It holds historical significance as it was the site of a tragic fight during World War II.
(Translated by Google) The cable car station in Goglio with frescoes on the Resistance in memory of a tragic episode. Now at the end of the experience of the partisan Republic of Ossola, while the Nazi troops reconquered this strip of land, some partisans sought refuge in nearby Switzerland trying to reach Alpe Devero with the cable car that leaves from the small hamlet of Baceno. About twenty of them climbed into the old cabin with some weapons and some food, which stopped halfway. The partisans became easy targets for the Germans. Some saved themselves by throwing themselves into the vegetation, four others were shot to death. The oldest was 31, the youngest 17.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Hotel Vecchio Scarpone. Very charming alpine vibe, with rooms that were recently renovated, very stylish and very comfortable. The service was terrific, everyone very friendly and welcoming. Elena took great care of us. Both Elena and others took time to share some interesting facts about the region, and provided numerous suggestions for excursions in the area. We arrived late, just after the restaurant closed but we were able to get something to eat, including a lasagna dish featuring locally sourced wild boar. The breakfast buffet was perfect, great selection of freshly made items, and a buffet with juices, yogurt, bread, coffee and more. Can’t recommend this place enough! Wish we could’ve stayed longer.

We stayed for two nights and had breakfasts and dinners - the hotel was a delightful choice! Our room was new and thought to every detail, the only improvement would be a higher pressure of the hot water in the shower (the room was at the 2d floor). As for the dinner - the staff surprised us with great choice of local but sophisticated dishes, quick service and warm hospitality. Can recommend for a pleasant summer breakfast or dinner outside at the terrace! If you want to hike in the vicinity, it’s a great place to stay.

Italian restaurant
Nestled in a picturesque setting, Casa Fontana is a charming log cabin-style restaurant that offers an inviting atmosphere and a delightful daily menu. The staff here are not only friendly but also well-versed in gluten-free options, ensuring everyone can enjoy the excellent local cuisine. Guests rave about the mixed starters and desserts—so much so that one dessert often leads to ordering several more!
Simply gorgeous log cabin style restaurant, with a daily menu. Very helpful and well-informed staff about gluten free options, excellent local food - we particularly loved the mixed starter and the desserts are amazing. We ordered one, then ended up ordering three more :)

The place, the staff, the nature, everything’s about Casa Fontana is just magical. This was my second time that I had stayed there and I’ll definitely go back.

Supernice and easy walk in the forest to reach this place where you could have a warming welcome tasting a French fondue with kirsch and a nice bottle of Prunent.
