Ettal in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Ettal, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Ettal is best known for its impressive Benedictine abbey, whose baroque basilica, brewery, and distillery can be visited. The village sits in the Ammergau Alps, offering easy access to scenic hiking trails and winter sports in the surrounding mountains. Nearby sights such as Schloss Linderhof and the painted houses of Oberammergau make Ettal a convenient base for exploring this part of Bavaria. Visitors also come for traditional Bavarian guesthouses and regional food produced in and around the monastery.
With favorites like Neptunbrunnen, Linderhof - Michael Waagmüller (ca. 1875), Ludwig der Bayer Bräustüberl, and Linderhof Palace, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Klosterhotel Ettal Ludwig der Bayer and Ludwig der Bayer Bräustüberl so you can get the best taste of Ettal while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Historical place
Linderhof Palace, a 19th-century creation of King Ludwig II, is a stunning display of opulence and grandeur. The palace and its surrounding park form an artistic and stylistically complex ensemble. Modeled after French architecture, it resembles the small summer palaces found in France's parklands during the 18th century.
Strongly recommend to take a tour inside the Castle. From the outside, it looks like just another castle, but interiors are top 👍. I really wished they let us take photos inside this palace, would have been awesome. Do visit the cave for a pleasant surprise
Praveen K — Google review
The trip tour was enjoyable, and the scenery towards the area was like a painting. The castle and its surrounding gardens offered a truly breathtaking view. It would have been preferable to have had more time to fully appreciate the surroundings because an hour was not sufficient, as the guided tour inside the castle lasted only 25 minutes. The interior of the castle was quite beautiful and ornate. No photos or video allowed inside the castle.
Alexis Y — Google review
This is a beautiful dream palace that speaks to the wealth of the region. The interior is simply breathtaking , especially the mirrors hall, and the palace itself is nestled among tall hills that seem like blue printed to add to the grandeur of the king and his legacy, albeit in infrastructure alone as Ludwig II left no heirs
Erida L — Google review
Schloss Linderhof is magnificent. What an extraordinary park with a decadent palace and a truly impressive Venus Grotto. This is where dreams come true for all admirers of absolutism — a truly unique experience. From the landscaped gardens, the fountain to breathtaking Alpine views, this place offers everything one could wish for. The guided tour of the palace is somewhat short, as Schloss Linderhof itself is not particularly large, but it is nonetheless rich in detail and absolutely worthwhile. This place is an absolute must-see! A wholehearted recommendation. Entrance fees and parking costs are entirely reasonable.
Julian W — Google review
Bavaria in the fall is a cornucopia of colors, and the grounds of Schloss Linderhof are stunning even with empty flower beds. Tours of the inside of the palace are timed and can accommodate whatever your native language happens to be. My husband and I went on the English speaking tour, and our guide was wonderfully informative and answered all of the questions the group had. Photos and video are not allowed inside the palace but are allowed in the Venus Grotto. King Ludwig II was an interesting historical figure. This castle is the only one Ludwig spent any real amount of time in, and it was his love letter to the Palace of Versailles and King Luis XIV. I’d highly recommend seeing this palace for yourself.
Babs M — Google review
I love visiting Ludwig II castles and I think that this one is one of my personal favorite. I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the gardens and the castle itself. Yes the castle is very small compared to the other ones he made but the inside is as spectacular as the others. Also you can find some hidden treasures in the garden like the Venus Grotto or the Moroccan pavilion which (if I remember correctly) he bought from the Paris Fair. It’s really amazing! The visit of the castle is with a tour guide and no photos are allowed inside unfortunately. The visit is quite short and you can’t always hear everything because it’s busy. The group is too big for the size of the rooms so you can’t admire it peacefully. It’s a shame! Also the management could be improved. We wanted to visit the Venus Grotto and had to come early in the morning to book our ticket. We already had our timed tickets for the palace but couldn’t get the Venus Grotto beforehand. So when they gave us the ticket the time slot was almost the same as the guided tour. We told them and they said we could join any tour of the morning. When we tried to do that we were told that it was tricky because they only allowed a certain amount inside. We ended up waiting for almost an hour before getting inside with another group for an English tour. But it was a bit stressful and we lost quite some time.
Melanie M — Google review
Jaw dropping! Instantly you can see why this palace is a World Heritage Site. This is a VERY small palace but every single inch of it is full of decoration and design! Make sure you get a ticket to the Grotto, it is straight out of Little Mermaid! This entire destination is over the top and if your mouth isn’t hanging on the ground like all 6 of us, I’d be shocked. Pictures are not allowed inside, so my pictures are from the internet (I have limited them). We weren’t sure about the weather so we purchased our tickets when we arrived and got them easily. The walk to this palace wasn’t too bad, it has a few hills we took our time and it took half hour to get to the castle and we took a half hour to get to the Grotto…my 75 year old parents made it (one has knee issues and the other hip replacement). The grounds are stunning and full of flowers, fountains and views! We spent 5 hours there EASILY. We packed a picnic and ate on the benches that are all around this palace. Bathrooms are limited so use them when you see them. There are hiking trails all around the property with views of mountains.
Kelsie G — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous palace. The drive and location is absolutely beautiful. The tour was very informative. No photos are allowed in the palace but I was able to buy a beautiful book with all 3 castles of king Ludwig which had amazing photos of inside.

Neptunbrunnen, Linderhof - Michael Waagmüller (ca. 1875)

4.8
(37)
Neptunbrunnen, located in the enchanting grounds of Linderhof Palace, is a stunning example of hydrodynamic artistry. This dynamic fountain captures the essence of movement and power, making it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts. Surrounded by meticulously trimmed hedges and cascading water features, it contributes to a picturesque garden landscape that delights visitors. Although currently undergoing renovations—expected to last several years—the beauty of Neptunbrunnen remains evident from past visits.
Neptun Statues at the rear of the palace, part of the fountains at the back. A wall leads up the small hill, emphasizing the statues importance.

Currently under renovations but 2 years ago on our last trip it was a great display of hydrodynamics. The tour guides say it will be under renovations for the next 6 years so we will be back then.

(Translated by Google) Linderhof Palace, located in a quiet valley in Bavaria, is a small but exquisitely beautiful palace built by King Ludwig II as a personal retreat. In front of the castle is the Neptune Fountain, created around 1875 by Michael Waagmüller. The fountain depicts the sea god Neptune with his trident, surrounded by sculpted nymphs and dolphins, from which spectacular jets of water shoot out. The surrounding gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, complete a fairy-tale landscape with orderly alleys, statues and brightly colored flowers. The place, at the foot of the Alps, impresses with its tranquility, wild nature and harmonious beauty.

Venusgrotte

4.5

Historical place
Nestled within the enchanting grounds of Schlossteich Linderhof, the Venusgrotte is a captivating site that has drawn visitors for its stunning beauty and unique architecture. This picturesque grotto, adorned with intricate designs, offers a serene escape into nature's embrace. However, it's important to note that it is currently undergoing renovations and will remain closed for an extended period.
It’s opened again after almost 10 years renovation. Wonderful! It’s so beautiful. The idea combined with art and technology behind, for that era, is just mind blowing. If you’re familiar with King Ludwig II story, this is a must visit.

In winter, however, the hike has a different character, at least when there is a lot of snow. Unfortunately, the Pürschlinghaus has already closed for the second winter, but the hike is still worth it, even if it gets a little more strenuous at the top. Charming old hotel. Standard room was quite nice and spacious. Breakfast was diverse and good quality. Restaurant closed too early so I did not get the chance to try it (by 9 pm on a Saturday!) The gym is small with a C2 rower, bike, cross trainer and an adjustable pulley with a stack of weights. Zero free weights or benches. Bonus points for stallbar and honourable retro mention for a power twister.

Right in front of Ettal Abbey so you can't beat the location. We got the comfort apartment and it had everything (no ac which is common in the region)!!! Plus was super clean and spacious. Stopped in for lunch after visiting linderhof and before heading to zugspitze. It was a very good meal, I especially enjoyed the Ragout vom Ammertaler Hirsch! Definitely pop into Ettal Abbey across the street before or after your meal, and there is a store next door that sells the liköre and other locally made goods.

We were visiting Linderhof Castle, and we decided to stop here because it was near monastery and was nicely decorated. We didn't have a reservation, but it was not full anyway. It is a typical bavarian restaurant. The food was ok, nothing special, they didn't have half of the desserts on the menu, service was slow and not so attentive eventhough the restaurant was half full. There are probably better options in the vicinity. Too bad.

Worst restaurant ever. The staff were extremely rude, refused to give back the proper change, and simply kept the money as they pleased. They even talked badly about customers right in front of them. Absolutely unacceptable behavior.
Yeon S — Google review
We came here without a reservation and with our dog for dinner. Although it was busy, the staff was very helpful and nice and seated us. Service was quick at this stage, we got our drinks quickly and our food quite quickly. The food was typical local, not that it was divine, but tasty and met our expectations. Wife's tafelspitz with horseradish sauce was falling apart and delicious. My pork tenderloin medallions fried in a pepper and bacon jacket in garden herb cream with colorful summer vegetables and homemade egg spätzle were also good. The meat was beautifully tender and juicy. Up to this point, everything was great and the restaurant would aspire to the highest rating of five stars. But then everything went wrong. When we finished eating, we waited and no one noticed us. The waitresses were cleaning the tables around us and setting them already for breakfast. But nobody noticed us. We waited an unbelievable half an hour to clear the dishes from the table and before someone came. We originally wanted to have dessert and some digestif, but we changed our minds. We lost our appetite. It's a pitty for us, but it's also a shame for the restaurant, because they could have made more money from us. And they could have great review. Unfortunately, this was a terrible mistake. They really spoiled it up with us.

We had a hearty and delicious lunch at this restaurant. My beer soup and cordon bleu were just incredible. The portions were medium-sized. The Cordon Bleu included salad and fries. The service was quite friendly and fast. Prices are average for Germany. The soup cost about 5 euros and the main course was about 20.

Service was just okay, we had a few issues. Food was good, seemed like a tourist trap and was pretty expensive. I had the beef dish that the meat came from the monastery, but it wasn't anything to write home about. It was nice to be able to sample the local beer, liquor and cheese.

The food was really bad and super low quality. It was way too expensive and not worth it at all. They charged us 17 euros for a cold dish that was just four slices of salami, two slices of Gouda, and some pickles. The fish was also tiny for the price, just a small piece. Definitely don’t recommend it.

Restaurant
Gröbl Alm Restaurant - Cafe is a traditional Bavarian eatery nestled near Garmisch, offering a picturesque view of the Alps. Visitors have raved about the delectable duck dish and mouthwatering apfelstrudel, making it an ideal stop for tourists exploring the area. While some found the swabian egg noodles to be satisfactory and the ox meat slightly tough, others appreciated the delicious liver dumpling soup and hearty stew.
Great restaurant, local authentic food, great view

We were looking to try some local food while in the area and decided to visit this restaurant based on the great reviews—unfortunately, we were largely disappointed. As a tourist, I would not recommend coming here. As people of color, we felt discriminated against. The experience started off fine, but gradually declined. It took an unbelievable 40 minutes to get our check, despite asking multiple times. The server continued to pass by us, serving others who arrived after we did. To make matters worse, another family came in after us and somehow received extremely fast service—they arrived, ordered, ate, and left all while we were still waiting. Even if they were regulars, everyone deserves fair treatment. To add to this, the restaurant was largely empty and smelled strongly of cigarettes. People were smoking right outside the entrance, and with no real air circulation inside, the smell just lingered. It made the atmosphere very unpleasant. Ultimately, it was the service that led to our low rating. There was only one woman managing the floor, and as we left, we noticed another staff member just sitting and drinking beer. It should never take 40 minutes to receive a check. Also, be aware this place only accepts cash because their card machine “doesn’t work”—apparently due to poor Wi-Fi. This could likely be fixed with a better router or setup, so it’s hard to understand why it hasn’t been addressed.

A traditionally Bavarian restaurant located near Garmisch, with a nice view of the Alps. Would be good experience for tourists. The duck dish shown in photo was very tasty. The swabian egg noodles were also good, but have tasted better. The liver dumpling soup was delicious. The ox meat was too dry and tough.

Gröbl Alm is a charming alpine restaurant seated in the Bavarian Alps near Ettal and Linderhof. It is urrounded by beautiful mountain views, and it offers a cozy, traditional atmosphere perfect for relaxing lunch. The menu is of a solid, home-style standard dishes. The real highlight is the stunning panorama from the terrace what delivers a true taste of the Alps.

A very good experience with a classic bavarians restaurant. The view is awesome and staff are friendly. Food is great and prices are fair.

Great food and friendly service. The pork knee was fenomenal!

Good food and great beer. The only downside was the slow service – we had to wait at least 20 minutes before being able to place our order.
