Traquair House, a grand 12th-century stately home located about 6 miles southeast of Peebles in Scotland, offers an ethereal beauty that feels like stepping back in time. The building's odd, sloping floors and musty odor add to its genuine feel, with parts believed to have been constructed before its first official record in 1107. The massive tower house has remained virtually unchanged since the 17th century.
Enjoyed a night here, and it was a lovely experience! A real treat to stay in such a historic building. Loved the view from our room out over the maze - worth climbing the spiral staircase to the room! Also lovely to relax in the Drawing Room which is next to the other two guest rooms on the ground floor. Breakfast was very relaxed, and made with quality produce - so very tasty. Lucy, the housekeeper, looked after us really well, and the team of guides were lovely and knowledgeable as we looked around the house. The grounds are full of wildlife and good for walks.

Lovely place and full of history. We really enjoyed the visit, from the indoor rooms and collections, to the maze, gardens, coffee, and brewery. The staff is kind and passionate, always happy to help. Every room is provided with leaflets plenty of information.

We visited Traquair House as part of our search for an initimate venue for our elopement wedding and knew right away we had found our perfect location. For our wedding stay, our room (White Room) was huge but cozy, comfortable and well stocked and felt very romantic, with lovely views of the peaceful gardens. Breakfast and our romantic wedding dinner were served in the Still Room the food was absolutely delicious and we were treated like royalty. It was also great to be able to sit in the Drawing Room in the evening and soak in all that history. We were married in the chapel - such a wonderful and magical place which just mesmerised us when we first visited. And of course - special mention to all the staff, including Lucy and Rose - and especially to Gillian the wedding coordinator at Traquair who gave us our tour when we first visited and looked after us during our special day. She is an absolute star! A wonderful place which I'm sure we'll visit regularly in years to come.

Lovely day out. Nice walks.. a maze, a few animals (pigs, goats and chickens). And a nice play park. Recommend for a family outing

Traquair House — Scotland’s oldest inhabited house — takes on a whole new kind of magic during its Light Trail. As night falls, the historic grounds are transformed by glowing installations, twinkling pathways, and creative light displays that bring the gardens and ancient trees to life. We wandered through illuminated tree tunnels, watched colours dance across the stone walls of the house, and followed spooky cackles through the forest as the lights shifted and sparkled around us. It’s a perfect blend of history and imagination — every corner reveals something new, from glowing glowing spiders to a dancing disco ball. The event is beautifully organised, family-friendly, and has a truly enchanting atmosphere. The car park is pitch black - and for me whi relies on light for spacial awareness this because an issue when I slammed the car boot down on my head. Be careful walking down the road to the initial gazebo area - my kids fell multiple times because it was too dark to notice the speed bumps and other changes in the road surface level. Whether you come for the history, the artistry, or just a dose of Halloween magic, the Traquair House Light Trail is one of the most memorable seasonal events in the Borders — cosy, creative, and completely spellbinding.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had a fantastic visit to Traquair House yesterday — truly a hidden gem in the Borders. The house itself is absolutely steeped in history, with beautifully preserved rooms and fascinating stories around every corner. Did you know that Glasgow market charter was created here, which lead to development of the village, town then city! You really get a sense of stepping back in time (though thankfully without the drafty rooms and powdered wigs). The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, happy to share anecdotes and answer questions, which made the experience even more engaging. After exploring the house and grounds, I stopped at the café, which was an absolute delight. I had a pulled pork bun with a fresh salad — it was delicious and hit the spot perfectly. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, just what you need after a good wander. All in all, Traquair House is a wonderful day out. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history, beautiful surroundings, and a tasty lunch to top it all off!
OLIVER G — Google review
A fascinating place, remarkably unchanged since the 18th century. Clearly still a family home which adds to the charm. Loads of rooms open to the public which means there is so much to see. My wife went a couple of years ago with our daughters and absolutely loved it. So my expectations were high but ended up being exceeded. All the guides were helpful and interesting but a special shout out to Ian who entertained us for ages with stories about the house and its occupants. Didn't have time to spend enough time in the grounds, which looked lovely, so will definitely be back.
Struan R — Google review
A lived-in and amazingly preserved Scottish tower house, well worth the visit from, say, Edinburgh. The rooms are filled with artefacts of interest, the gardens and scenery are beautiful and the atmosphere is great. Oh, and the standard of the food in the café is very high indeed.

Saffron - Innerleithen is an authentic Indian restaurant and takeaway that offers a traditional Indian menu with a focus on Nepalese specialties. The restaurant provides a simple and contemporary dining space for guests to enjoy their flavorful dishes. With positive reviews from travelers, it has gained recognition for its amazing Indian cuisine, making it a must-visit spot in Innerleithen.
Absolutely fabulous food and service. 😍 We decided against going to the 'Indian' restaurant in Peebles due to its horrendous reviews. 😱 If you are nearby you must try this one instead. (sit in or takeaway). It was one of the best, if not the best, Indian meals we have had. 😋 We had poppadoms, a mixed sharing platter, two tasty curries, a nan bread and pilau rice. With drinks it cost us only £60. The owner & staff were friendly and subtly attentive sharing local knowledge of attractions and events after our meal. 😁 A lovely & honest family business worth supporting. 😎
Ewan W — Google review
Extensive menu of both popular and less familiar dishes. Vegetarian starter platter was very tasty. Sharisha Chicken Tikka was a generous portion of marinated chicken, with a thick sauce flavoured with mustard, chilli, garlic and coriander. Tarka dall had plenty of garlic. Enjoyed mango lassi to drink.

After a long hike, I arrived in Innerleithen late in the evening and was looking for a restaurant. Saffron was open and welcoming, offering excellent service and a delicious curry. It was there that I tried Shahi curry for the first time, and I can recommend it to anyone looking for a mild and slightly sweet dish. The only disappointment was the naan, so I'd suggest choosing rice as a side, instead.

Excellent curry house. Perfect for hungry cyclists! Very tasty food, and I'm from Bradford, so fussy when it comes to curry. Highly recommended.

What a great restaurant! We are staying in town, and visiting from Australia, and decided to pop in when walking by and wanting some Indian food. The staff are so hospitable, friendly and kind, and the food was outstanding. It was hard to choose what to order as it all sounded amazing, with plenty of options that we've never heard of. Our mixed veggie main and chicken vindaloo were nice and spicy, but still flavourful and the mint yoghurt and onion salad were fresh. The owner said that they've been open for 13 years, and no wonder it's stood the test of time. Delicious. Thankyou!

Food was incredibly fresh delicious. A huge array of options and all of them looked so good! We were a large table and despite this and a busy restaurant, the food came out really quickly. The staff are all lovely, thank you!

Visited today whilst mounting biking, table of 6. Nice friendly service upon arrival and a nice setting. Some really funny quirky stuff inside made the place feel very friendly. Menu was brilliant, loads of choice and not overly expensive. The drinks were good too, the alcohol free tempest was a real highlight for a driver! I am dairy free and was very pleased to see not only was it covered in the menu (and gf, vegan) there was a lot of choice. The food came quick enough and was a very high quality. Would highly reccoemnd and

Really enjoyable evening for our large group staying in Innerleithen for the weekend. Very tasty food from an interesting selection of options with something to suit everybody - from unusual small plates (with the Kimchi cured fish and the Monkfish curry going down well!) to very good pizzas and burgers. The Mars Bar and Nutella calzone was also amazing -but needed more than one person to finish it! Good value, and friendly service. Thanks

We visited Out Out Pizza Pebbles while nearby for the Tour of the Border event, and it was the perfect choice. Booking a table online was quick and easy, and we were welcomed by such friendly staff. The pizzas were outstanding – authentic, genuinely Italian, and honestly some of the best I’ve had outside of Italy! My only small feedback would be that it would be great to see a few simple pasta dishes on the menu too, but overall it was a fantastic experience. A real gem – we’ll definitely be back next time we’re in the area!

Stayed in Innerleithen for a mountain biking trip and ate here on our last night. Food was absolutely top notch. Arrived quickly, fresh, and tasted lovely! Staff were friendly and helpful, restaraunt wasn't that loud or busy which was nice too.

We went last night with our two kids and the pizzas were delicious. The prices are so reasonable too. £52 for 3 pizzas and 4 soft drinks. We also had pizza left over! 3 pizzas was more than enough for the 4 of us. DELICIOUS!

"The Happy Days" is a Chinese takeaway that has received high praise from visitors. Customers have raved about the delicious salt and pepper chicken balls, onion rings, and generous portion sizes at reasonable prices. The staff members are described as incredibly friendly and accommodating, with one visitor noting the helpfulness in ensuring their vegetarian dietary preferences were met. Despite being a bit of a drive for some, patrons found the freshly cooked food to be well worth it, emphasizing its great taste and quality.
Great service, good prices and delicous food Called beforehand to ask if the tofu szechuan was vegan and it was, so glad it was cos it tasted amazing My vegetarian girlfriend got salt and pepper tofu and salt and pepper chips and she loved it
J N — Google review
After 3 years of using this local business we are now left with an overpriced, underwhelming change to a decent take away in the town. Normally one of our go to side dishes, salt and pepper chicken was served with pretty decent chicken, some peppers and onions and a nice garlic hit, however now we have just paid £8 for an absolute disgrace of a dish. it was served with chicken nuggets! We would normally let some changes slide but this is an absolute shambles of a business penny pinching anything they can while making a HUGE profit on frozen crap. will not be back !
Ben R — Google review
I genuinely can’t praise this place any higher - this is by far my favourite Chinese place ever. The staff are INCREDIBLY friendly and helpful. The delivery didn’t take too long especially for the quality of food. The food is incredibly tasty and fantastic quality. Me and my partner are vegetarian so we’ve had a lot of the vegetable based dishes and we also had the tofu. The young person on the phone was INSANELY nice and aggressive helpful with making sure nothing contain animal products. I highly recommend the plain chow noodles and the salt and pepper tofu (amazing trust me). I genuinely have no complains about this place. The staff are great, the food was phenomenal, delivery took the amount of time I expected, the price was reasonable. Would highly recommend

Booked into accommodation locally and asked the host to recommend somewhere to grab takeaway and Happy Days was suggested. Drove the two miles to park up pretty much outside. Friendly staff member took my order and waited 15 mins or so for the FRESHLY cooked food to arrive….. WARNING - the portions are huge and what we normally order at home feeds the two of us….. this portion of food would probably comfortably feed 3 people and priced pretty much the same as what we pay back home in Cheshire. Food was really tasty and PLENTY left over for tomorrow :-) We ordered Sweet & Sour Chicken Cantonese Plain Noodles Fried Rice Sharing starter for one (enough for 2 people) Tub of curry sauce (don’t ask :-) ) Shame I’m living over 200 miles away otherwise I’d be ordering from here again
Jim O — Google review
Our first visit to The happy days and can honestly say it won’t be the last. Friendly welcoming staff who happily obliged my order even though it wasn’t on the menu. Excellent tasty food that was still piping hot when we got home. Definitely recommend a visit.
Sarah B — Google review
From Glasgow where you have a lot of options for Chinese food. This food is fresh, they cook/marinate their own meat rather than buying it already seasoned etc. They will take anything out that you don't like and they will add anything (within reason). The staff are polite and are very helpful. Not to mention the food is amazing, if you like spicy food I recommend the Singapore rice noodles. But the basics are good too!
Just S — Google review
Disappointed with meal usually love this place for a chicken curry, when plating meal up chips were reheats within an inch of their life, the so called chicken was cubed with no taste I think it was actually tofu. Speaking to others who had also purchased the same meal were also disappointed, this was the weekend of 2nd October 2021

St. Ronan's Wells is a charming pavilion that offers a retreat for visitors, originally built by the Earl of Traquair. The visitor center features temporary exhibitions and delves into the local history, including its literary connections to James Hogg and Sir Walter Scott. The well itself is a hidden oasis surrounded by lush foliage, creating an enchanting and serene atmosphere.
St. Rohan's Well is a hidden oasis that captured my heart from the moment I arrived. 🌿🌊 The journey through meandering trails heightened the sense of adventure, leading to a scene straight out of a fairy tale. The well, surrounded by lush foliage, emanates an aura of serenity that's truly enchanting. ✨🍃 The sound of trickling water and birdsong instantly transported me away from the bustle of everyday life. 🐦🎶 I found myself drawn to the ancient stones and the history they hold. The aura of reverence enveloping the well made it feel like a sacred sanctuary. The well's water, cool and clear, felt like a sip from nature's own chalice. 💧🌌 I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the generations before me who sought solace in this very spot. The tranquility here is a balm for the soul, a reminder of the beauty that exists beyond screens and schedules. St. Rohan's Well isn't just a place; it's a pause in time. A chance to reflect, rejuvenate, and embrace the simple joys that nature offers. 🍀🌞 Whether you seek solitude, creative inspiration, or a moment of mindfulness, this hidden gem promises an unforgettable experience. Don't miss the opportunity to let go and let the whispers of nature soothe your spirit. 🙏🌼🌈

Was nice, peaceful place to visit, went in the morning so visitors centre wasn't open but had a look round the garden, learnt some local history a d then walked back to town through the woods

St Ronan’s Wells is a lovely little historic gem tucked above Innerleithen, surrounded by peaceful gardens and woodland views. Once a Victorian spa retreat, it was built around a natural mineral spring said to have healing properties. The inside building is closed, but you can explore the gardens freely. We wandered through the gardens, which are beautifully kept and full of colour in spring and summer. There’s a calm, timeless feel about the place — benches under trees, flower beds buzzing with bees, and lovely views across the town below. It’s a short, easy walk from the centre of Innerleithen and a perfect stop if you enjoy history, quiet nature, or just somewhere peaceful to pause during a Borders day out. Small, charming, and full of local heritage — St Ronan’s Wells and Gardens is well worth a visit.

We've been taking our daughter (2 years old) here for a while now and can't recommend enough. The team, stable and horses are fantastic. Our daughter is obsessed with horses and has such fun during her 30 min trek. Prompt response from Ian. He was amazing from the off. My daughter had two hour treks whilst we visited Peebles and she was made to feel very welcome. No snobbery that you get with some schools where your child who longs to ride a horse is made to feel inadequate or uncomfortable. They do some wonderful things here rescuing and rehabilitating horses. They have a lovely rescued foal at the moment, lovely to see. Thank you for making my daughters riding experience the best 👍🏻

Great wee stables. Our daughter did a 1 hour pony ride. (There was also a half hour option.) Rode a wee loop across to Innerleithen and back. The instructor Jane was great - friendly and great with our daughter. We’ll be going back.

Robert Smail's Printing Works is a well-preserved Victorian letterpress printing facility, now maintained by The National Trust for Scotland. It serves as an Industrial Heritage museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the operations of a local printer in the 1900s while still fulfilling print and stationery orders. Established in 1866, it catered to the local community's printing needs and even published a weekly newspaper from 1893 to 1916.
Step back in time and discover this fascinating print works now run by the National Trust. Join the knowledgeable printers and compositors for a guided tour and explore the working areas and watch the printing press in action. After the 90 minute tour there's a chance to spend some time in the lovely printer's shop. Tours must be booked in advance. Well worth a visit.

If I could give this wonderful working time capsule six stars, I would. Its three enthusiastic and thoroughly knowledgeable staff - Colin, Jack and Jamie - treated us to a 90 minute small-group tour, with the opportunity to become a compositor for the day and print our name using techniques from yesteryear. Essentially, the National Trust for Scotland are custodians of a printer's business owned by the Smail family that operated from 1866 through to the 1986. With no-one to pass the business on to, we are blessed that it was saved for us by the National Trust for Scotland. This is a unique tour and experience, not to be missed.

Great tour and very enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guides. It was a lot of fun and so impressive to see the old machines and the old offices with all the little details. Join a tour in case you are in the area :)

Robert Smail’s Printing Works tour, operated by National Trust Scotland, provides an enjoyable and educational experience in the history of commercial printing at this small establishment. The staff were fabulous with their knowledge and dedication to this craft. The tour was particularly engaging because it was active and interactive. First, the guides described the printing works' history and showed various printed materials since the mid-1800s. Later, they demonstrated the earliest manual printing methods, and during the latter part of the tour operated some of the semi-automated machinery. During the middle of the tour, visitors were given the opportunity to set the type for their names, which was then pressed for a printed souvenir. We found parking along Hall Street, which had several free parking spaces in the late afternoon. Further down that street is a car park with free parking. NOTE: Visited in mid-September 2023.

What a fantastic day at R. Smal & Sons in Innerleithen. The printing business has been there since the mid-1800s and actually printed the very first 4 page weekly tabloid newspaper the St Ronans Standard. The National Trust rescued the business, and it's still printing today with the original victorian equipment. Staff were very welcoming, helpful, attentive, and very knowledgeable. Colin, our tour guide was awesome and was very passionate about his trade and the work that the business is still producing.

Tweed Valley Forest Park

National forest
Tweed Valley Forest Park offers a plethora of outdoor activities, including the renowned 7stanes mountain biking sites and the exhilarating Go Ape adventure. The park also boasts ancient footpaths like St Cuthberts Way for those seeking a more historical experience. Fishing enthusiasts can indulge in the sport on the River Tweed, known as the 'Queen of salmon rivers', or in well-stocked local lochs.
Great trails, wish I had the legs to enjoy it more

Card machine wasn't working, so parking would only take coins...causing a massive queue in the morning and the shop nor cafe would give out any change. Then the pressure washers stop accepting the few coins we managed to get hold of.

This is a gem. On the edge of Innerleithen and tucked away at the back of Caddon View Country Guest House. I had poached eggs (2) on guacamole and sourdough panckakes (2) with a lovely little salad complete with olives. The coffee is excellent too. Didn't try the cakes but they looked good. Very friendly staff. I'm not a veggie but there looked to be a decent choice on the menu if you are.

Lovely, friendly staff. Fabulous food. Great outdoor area. Best egg sandwich I've ever had. My new favourite.

Had a great lunch here with family. Unfortunately 1 dish was missed on the orderslip and 1 dish had broccoli in(we told the waitress the we were allergic to it) but none the less the dishes we're rectified and we ate soon after.

I love this little place, hidden away in a lovely garden. Outdoor seating available in summer. I was surprised at how cosy it is in winter too! The food and drinks are really good quality and value for money. It offers something very different to the existing cafes in Innerleithen (which are nice too!) - love that it is open later and is licensed, mulled wine was a delight! I've had a couple of the homemade soups which are delcious and served with sourdough. In the summer I had the lemon cake with mascarpone which was AMAZING. More recently a delicious warmed chocolate brownie with icecream. Really want to try their main dishes one evening too, sure I won't be disappointed. Staff are really warm and welcoming too.

Renwicks boasts a diverse menu featuring a wide array of dishes crafted from high-quality ingredients. The restaurant's ambiance exudes elegance and sophistication, creating the perfect setting for enjoying a memorable meal.
We arrived late on, and the kitchen had started to tidy up, however we were still seated and offered both the main and bar menu to choose from. The service was great, and even though the kitchen was preparing to close for the night, the food served was of great quality! Only disappointment was the service charge added automatically and not brought to our attention when paying.

For starters you can not stick two mature single mattresses together and call it a king size bed, poor showers, no heating and as for the "free" WiFi just don't frustrate yourself. No sleep, ridiculously over priced food and just not living up to the portrayal on website. Reception staff also need some training in etiquette. Sorry but will not be staying here again.
Kevin B — Google review
Waited over an hour for fish and chips. It was ridiculously over priced.£18 for fish and chips. Only 4 choices on the bar menu. Oven chips and a small fish. No lemon. Tiny pot of mushy peas.
Clare S — Google review
Service at this restaurant is absolutely disgraceful. Shockingly slow, incompetent waiting staff. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place. The food is horribly overpriced, nice enough but not worth the money. Would never return.

Rubbish service, very basic and overpriced food

Food was good quality but the gnocchi was a bit too small for a main course. Service was poor, waiters could do with some training and hygiene advice. Would recommend going out for dinner if staying at the hotel
