Elgol in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Elgol, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Elgol is a tiny coastal village on Skye known for some of the island’s most dramatic views, with the jagged Cuillin mountains rising directly across the bay. From its pier, boat trips head to Loch Coruisk and nearby islands, offering chances to spot seals, seabirds and sometimes dolphins. The area has rocky shorelines, sea cliffs and short walks that showcase Skye’s rugged scenery without heavy crowds. Its remote setting and simple facilities give it a quieter, more contemplative feel than the island’s busier sights.
With favorites like Jazz Buchanan Creations, Coruisk House Hotel, and Spar Cave, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Elgol Bistro and Coruisk House Hotel so you can get the best taste of Elgol while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Feel free to follow our itinerary exactly or tailor it to your own needs — happy wandering!

Misty Isle Boat Trips offer a relaxing way to take in the stunning landscapes of Skye without strenuous hikes. Operating from Elgol to Loch Coruisk and the Inner Hebrides, passengers can enjoy breathtaking views and spot abundant sealife such as basking sharks, minke whales, bottlenose dolphins, and even Orca if lucky.
Great trip highly recommend the boat trip to Loch Coruisk, seen lots of seals, can also see sea eagles, whales & dolphins but not on my trip. But the real star of the show is the scenery, totally out of this world! Try and go on a nice calm day you won't regret it! The guys on the boat do a great job with info and stories & a cuppa tea and shortbread on the way back 😋

Our trip with Misty Isle Boat Trips was absolutely unforgettable! The owners and their family made the whole experience so special — warm, welcoming, and truly passionate about what they do. On the way back, they even let my son take a turn at steering the boat, which was such a magical moment for him and one he’ll never forget! What really stood out was not just the stunning scenery and wildlife, but the genuine kindness of this family-run business. They didn’t just run a tour — they shared their love for Skye, encouraging us to try local food and support other small businesses. That sense of community spirit was inspiring, and of course, we did — and the seafood was divine! If you’re visiting the Isle of Skye, don’t miss this boat trip. It’s more than just a trip — it’s a heartfelt experience run by truly amazing people.

No whales or dolphins on our trip but that didn’t matter! But the star of the show is the scenery - the Cullins are spectacular viewed from the sea, and the Loch is magical, so beautiful and serene it took our breath away. The father & son team running the boat were love, very entertaining and knowledgable & informative.

Highly recommend booking a Standard (3 hour) trip through Misty Isle Boat Trips. Duncan, our captain, pointed out seals and other interesting factual tidbits along the journey. He even brought along snacks and hot chocolate/tea/coffee for the ride back. 90 minutes on-shore at Loch Coruisk was plenty of time to explore the beautiful scenery!
Asha M — Google review
We were all blown away with this amazing boat trip! Seamus and Alastair went out of their way to ensure that the experience was everything and more! This trip was an experience of a lifetime and without a doubt the best thing we did on our visit to Skye! Don’t miss out - book it now!! Thank you guys!

What a beautiful experience with the lovely family business! We came spontaneously today to Misty Isle Boat Trips and they managed to book us on the next boat at 11 o clock - otherwise I would recommend booking in advance. Our Skipper Sandy and his son Shaun were a great crew and blessed us with an amazing experience. They had great tales to tell about their ancestors and the surrounding areas while we were on the boat. We got to see some wildlife (namely seals, red deer, and various (sea)bird species) - unfortunately no Puffins (I think that’s another time of the day), but apparently you can be lucky and see some whales, dolphins, or sharks as well. We had 90 minutes on shore (we booked the standard 3h tour) where it was really beautiful and calm. Afterwards they offered us tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and some shortbread and we headed back to Elgol. All in all I would highly recommend booking a trip with this nice family business!

We had a fantastic experience in on this cruise. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and works hard to give you a quality experience. We saw several animals on our tour and had a great time at the Loch. Bonus points for supporting a family business with local roots to this area of Skye!

Misty Isle gave us a superb experience. The people were friendly and informative (and funny) and went out of their way to enable us to make the most of the dolphins, whales and seals which we saw. Highly recommended!! Kate, Jon and Katy.

Just brilliant! All the staff were really helpful and will try to accommodate everyone. The skippers and guides on the boats are really knowledgeable and interesting. The boat journey is so much fun and the Loch and Cuilllins just stunning. Highly recommended. The homemade ice cream at the top carpark cafe was superb as well! This is a must for anyone visiting Skye.

We had an absolutely amazing experience from start to finish! The lady at the front desk was really friendly, and Jules who spoke about the history and nearby islands was very kind and knowledgeable. The scenery is beautiful and you’re even offer a hot drink or juice on the journey back. For £35 this was more than worth the money! Tip- Make sure you bring midge spray as we definitely underestimated them😅

The best experience we had on Skye. Wonderful service, super friendly staff, knowledgeable crew. We took the four hour Canna trip and saw an incredible amount of wildlife and birds including a very rare breaching Minke whale, stunning. We had perfect weather, but book no matter when you are here. Not to be missed. Be careful and considerate on the difficult single track road in though.

Absolutely fantastic boat trip out from Elgol to Canna and Rum! I’ve never seen so many dolphins in my life in one go!! Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery and a very knowledgable and kind skipper/guide!! Would totally recommend to anyone!! Thank you Bella Jane for a memorable day out!

We had a wonderful experience with this boat trip to the Isle of Canna. It was magical, partly thanks to our captain Johnny, who is really nice, funny, and has a great eye for the birds and other marine animals ! Merci beaucoup pour cette superbe excursion qui nous a bien dépaysé de Montpellier ! 🤍

Wow!! Awesome trip into the magnificent black cullin, super friendly informative guide who’s happy to chat to you and point out all the magnificent sites and the beautiful harbour seals that bathe on the nearby rocks. You get 90 minutes to take a walk to loch Coruisk and explore the awe inspiring location. This trip is a definite for anyone visiting the beautiful Isle of Skye ❤️

What an experience. Terrible weather but the captain ensured the best in the given circumstances. Took a lot of convincing from the owners to us. Was worth the trip. Chilled wind and drizzle !! Had some good sightings of Porpoise and Puffins and Seals. Highly recommended for all

Great service provided by the lovely folks over at Bella Jane boat trips! The boat took us over to an island and provided us with a pickup time back (which included a hot beverage). On the journey we were given information on the area and it's wildlife. They even took some group pictures of us!

Elgol Beach

Hiking area
Elgol Beach is a stunning destination offering a unique blend of tranquility and natural beauty. Situated in the picturesque sea loch reminiscent of the majestic Fjords of Bergen, this beach boasts breathtaking views of the Cuillin Mountain range across the water. The little fishing village of Elgol adds to its charm, making it a postcard-worthy spot on the Isle of Skye.
Lovely little beach with parking nearby. It was very quiet the day we went, we were the only ones there for a few hours. You can walk across the rocks round the other side for some lovely views. Livestock roams on the beach so please bare this in mind when you take your dogs.
Maxine C — Google review
An isolated beach in Isle of skye. The road to beach is small but worth a visit. The map stops few minutes before the exact location where I think is a hiking track to the other side of the beach. I came all the way down to from the cliff to a small car park and went to the pebble beach .
Aazmi S — Google review
What more can I say? This place is unbelievably beautiful! We stumbled upon it purely by accident while walking along the shoreline. I don't know what else there is to do here besides enjoy the view, but if the weather is clear or the sun is setting, then come here!
Ludwig T — Google review
I stayed nearby this beach with my tent after crossing beinn laecach and ben cleat. The view is amazing and there are nearby public toilets. There is also a nearby stream where you can take water from.
Richard K — Google review
Beautiful idilic place, stunning place must see
Sue S — Google review
I heard a few people saying how lovely this beach is but when I got there I was quite disappointed to be honest. I had a vision of gorgeous white sands like I saw in Morar but this is entirely made up of rock. Giant rocks that you cannot lie comfortably on, even walking is tricky. My fault for not researching it. Some of the rock formations are amazing and the view of the mountains is also great but the place is not particularly pretty, at least not on the day I visited. I wouldn't recommend it to others as worth the drive there unless you want to do one of the boat tours.
Matt T — Google review
Peaceful, quite, beautiful... Best way to start your journey on the Isle of Skye
N. B — Google review
It’s a small and rocky beach, but there’s a food stall with fresh seafood(but make sure you are there in the morning, by lunchtime it’s getting sold out). Otherwise not much to do/see, unless you do some boat tour.

Caverns & Caves
Spar Cave, located just east of Elgol, is a must-visit spot with a rich history dating back to Sir Walter Scott's visit in 1814. The cave, which extends 80 meters deep, offers a unique and adventurous experience for those willing to explore its depths. Accessible via single-track roads and a trek through fields and cliffs, the journey to Spar Cave is an adventure in itself.
Quite an interesting cave and fairly easy to reach if your ok with desending the muddy path and climb down some rocks, the entrance leading to the cave mouth is slippy but not too bad to get past if you take your time. As many have said, you need to be aware of the tidal times and plan accordingly, we arrived about an hour before low tide and it was fine. The formation’s inside and the main slope you climb to get up inside the cave and quite impressive, the flowstone that covers the caves floors and walls are very grippy so climbing was not very hard at all. Bring a torch though, preferably a head torch so you can keep your hands free for the climb up/down!
Dav B — Google review
Stunning cave with great views. Please check the tide times and don't hang around in the cave too long or the tides will turn and block you exit
Andrew's J — Google review
Visited on Easter weekend at low tide, only one other group was there. Amazing experience! Recommendations: don’t come without a head torch, leave yourself plenty of time for the single lane driving area, use a website guide to navigate - it isn’t completely straightforward.
Mahsa F — Google review
Go at low low tide for the best chance to access the cave. The first 3-4 caves are not the main Spar Cave. Takes about 15 minutes to access from the road, so arrive before low tide to have around an hour to work with. Go slow, be patient, and go with a friend. Beautiful place!
Andrew M — Google review
Not the easiest access but doable with good walking shoes. Ensure you check the tide times as it’s only accessible during low tide. Waterproofs required as the cave is quite wet. Only 15/20 mins from the car and maybe 25 mins from the entrance and back.
Rhiannon R — Google review
HIGHLY recommend. Definitely a sleeper pick. I went as the tide was going out, not quite low tide, and didn’t see anyone else there for two hours while I explored alone. The red cherry looking sea anemone (acitinia equina) were so cool and the cave was AWESOME. Bring a flashlight and sturdy boots that can get wet or dry easily. Park by the cattle gate near the red telephone booth and enter the trail near the old stone ruins.
Katie M — Google review
very slippery path, very small cave, and you really need to mind the tide. there wasn't even a sign to find the path down to the cave. not worth the long drive down that narrow road, unfortunately.
Charlie C — Google review
Such an interesting place to visit when you have it planned. Hit it just before low tide to get the best experience. Don't forget some good torches and wet gear.

Elgol Bistro is a hidden gem in the small fishing village of Elgol on the Isle of Skye. The village offers stunning views of the Cullin Mountains, making it a photographer's dream. The bistro serves fantastic food, with their Fish and Chips being highly recommended. Visitors can also enjoy homemade ice cream in flavors like White Chocolate and Whisky. The owner, Donald, is known for being welcoming and informative.
The owners are adorable and generous. We arrived a little bit late, but they took really good care of us. The smoked salmon is super fresh and tasty, and so are the haddock and tomato one. The local sky beer is very refreshing. A must stop !

Another lovely meal at the bistro. Greats service from Donald and the new waitress in training doing very well! Advised to contact to book via email or Facebook to ensure you can get a table. We booked the day before and left extremely happy! Highly recommend the fish & chips, 5 cheese macaroni, brownie & ice cream! Local Skye Gold to wash it all down. Hope to be back next time!

Stopped by for a quick bite through the wilderness and nothingness. It’s warm and cosy, with cute music playing, and a welcoming host. The food was good too, only tried the vegetarian soup. Good vibes all around, and a must stop on your visit to Elgol. It is an unexpectedly welcome rest stop, where the earth ends and the sea begins (or maybe the sea ends too and the earth flattens out? Your guess is as good as mine). If you’re lucky, you’ll find some sheep grazing in the surrounding area of the cafe!
Samia D — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. The menu is short, creative, and locally focused. All of our dishes were delicious and well-executed. Service was terrific, and the atmosphere was relaxed: a mix of locals and travelers. Highly recommend the whisky/chocolate flight for dessert!

The best Cullen Skink in the Isle of Skye. The owner was really kind and warm. He taught us about local music from Skye which become our road trip soundtrack. We are sure that he will win the next cullen skink championship! The road to reach Elgol was really beautiful during the golden hour - sunset. Reservation is really recommended (via Instagram).

We travelled from Fort William and booked a table by emailing the restaurant. Donald was very responsive and promptly confirmed our reservation by email. I recommend booking in advance, as the restaurant was full when we arrived. The food was excellent, and the service was warm and friendly. Thank you, Elgol Bistro!

This was a beautiful and friendly place to eat. My husband and I count it as the best food we had during our trip to Scotland. Our B&B host recommended it and encouraged us to message them on Facebook for a reservation which they seemed to appreciate. The food was amazing, but the ice cream really blew us away. Highly recommend getting some (we got the white chocolate and whisky flavor) as we will forever be missing it now.

Coruisk House is a charming cottage located in the tiny village of Elgol, offering boat trips to the remote Loch Coruisk. The Edwardian country house has been refurbished with a contemporary interior and offers stunning views of the bay. Guests have praised the host's hospitality and attention to detail, making their stay for special occasions like weddings truly memorable. The on-site restaurant also receives high praise for its incredible four-course menu, making it a must-visit dining spot while exploring Skye.
A truly magical place to stay on our honeymoon. Coruisk House has beautiful, bright rooms with stunning views. The food, both dinner and breakfast was incredible and has been a highlight of our trip to Skye. This is how you do hospitality. Elgol is a wonderful rural village. I adored the 13 mile single track drive through the most breathtaking scenery on Skye. Thank you so much Clare and Iain for your hospitality. We will be returning on our next trip to Scotland.

Our seventh visit since 2018 which must speak for itself! We love Skye, and this lovely restaurant with rooms beautifully situated on the glorious Elgol peninsular is so special. Iain's food is exceptional - carefully sourced local first-class ingredients and so expertly prepared by him alone. Iain and Clare also have a very loyal team. If you prefer noisy, fast restaurants this may not be for you, as the pace is slow, gentle but very special.

Our favourite stop over from our 8 day NC500 trip. Claire and Ian run a amazing hotel. With a bonus of some dogs if you want to see them. Breakfast was 10 / 10 and was the best breakfast on the trip. The range of food available, quality of ingredients and overall style was perfect. Room with a view, a super comfy bed and great shower what more could you want. Bonus of super fluffy robes Shame we only booked 1 night.

A Luxurious, Romantic Wedding Stay at Coruisk House, Isle of Skye… We spent two unforgettable days at Coruisk House for our wedding, and it was the perfect setting for a truly special celebration. From start to finish, the experience was seamless — a rare combination of luxury, comfort, and deeply personal hospitality. The accommodation was outstanding. The rooms and the cottage ‘An Nead’ are beautifully styled, immaculately clean, and thoughtfully laid out. It’s the ideal retreat for travellers seeking a luxury, romantic escape on the Isle of Skye. The food was exceptional. The wedding dinner was a fine dining experience in itself. Clare and Iain, the owners, personally guided us through the menu choices and wine pairings for our day; matching each course with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. They delivered four exquisite and delicious courses that were not only tailored to our preferences but also full of creativity and flavour. Clare also went above and beyond in helping us arrange aspects of our wedding that weren’t even her responsibility — her support was invaluable. Their calm, thoughtful approach turned what could have been a stressful few days into something joyful and relaxed. They anticipated our every need with care and attentiveness. If you’re looking for a unique boutique hotel with exceptional food, warm service, and luxury accommodation on the Isle of Skye, Coruisk House is a true gem. It’s the perfect destination for a romantic getaway, an intimate celebration, or a memorable stop on a Scottish Highlands journey. Thank you!!!

My husband and I spent a few nights and a few meals with Coruisk House during our honeymoon, and I actually cannot properly express how influential it was to our entire trip. Clare and Iain (and Andy!) provide an unforgettable dining experience and we simply can’t stop talking about it. Next time we go, we’ll definitely plan to spend a full day in Elgol - we regret only stopping by the harbor for a picture the morning we left. We had so many lovely experiences during our trip, but Coruisk House is one of the ones that makes us want to return.
Morgan L — Google review
We wanted to visit Skye but didn’t want to feel surrounded by tourists. Luckily a Scottish friend recommended Coruisk House, which was perfect. He promised “remote, rugged, quiet heaven” at Coruisk with Michelin-caliber food, and that’s exactly what we enjoyed. We’ve both worked in restaurants for years and we’re quite critical, but Iain exceeded our expectations, offering genuinely stunning food that reflects and respects Scotland – everything is locally sourced, cooked with incredible care and skill, and presented beautifully. I will dream about the hake with grilled squid, served alongside pheasant mousse with squid tartare! I’m the daughter of a lobsterman and Iain’s lobster bisque was far and away the best I’ve ever had. The wine list is really thoughtfully curated – Clare and Iain know several of the wine producers – and there was a lovely range of prices and wonderful choices. Our room and the entire house was sparkling clean, cozy, and chic – from the homemade candy to the dreamy linens to the fireplace, Coruisk House wrapped us up in warm hospitality and gave us three lovely days, even when it was pouring outside. Clare gave us wonderful advice for the rest of our trip, too. Our Scottish friend said that “staying with Iain and Clare reminded me that pairing beautiful accommodations, off the beaten track locations, and world-class dining is the way I want to live,” and if any part of you thinks you might want to stay at Coruisk House, believe me: you do.

Everything about our stay was perfect. The hotel is in a beautiful location and Clare and Iain do an amazing job. The dinner was really, really special. It's a splurge but well worth it. We highly recommend this lovely spot!

We stayed in the Tigh Mairi self-catering cottage of this property and we honestly loved everything about it! It truly captures the essence of what you would imagine a stay on Isle of Skye to be. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you'd need, including having a modern kitchen with all the equipment necessary. The rest of the cottage is beautifully finished, clean and new. The area around is what you'd expect typically, nice for walks and beautiful scenery. The hosts were easy to contact when needed, friendly, and welcomed us with some local goodies which was a very nice gesture.
