Bar
Bar Frasquito is a popular restaurant in Setenil de las Bodegas, known for its delicious dishes and cozy atmosphere. It's advisable to arrive early or make a reservation as it tends to get crowded. The menu offers a variety of mouthwatering options such as tomato and frigate mackerel salad, ensaladilla, flamenquines, and eggplant with goat cheese.
Great meal here on a sunny Winter afternoon. Lots of sunshine to keep you warm and simple but delicious Spanish standards. Very reasonable prices considering it's a huge tourist draw. Wait staff gets a but bogged down when busy.
Allan H — Google review
Very tasty food – finally something with vegetables, not dry or greasy. For tapas, we had the octopus salad and cheese croquettes (a house specialty) – both were really good. For mains: octopus skewers and beef tenderloin steak. The octopus was excellent, but the steak was disappointing – full of tough fat, hard to chew, more suitable as a boot sole for a mountain hike. Still giving 5 stars – for Spain, this was quite decent food. The kids had chicken croquettes with fries (kids' meal) – tasted like breaded chicken pâté, but they ate it happily. For dessert, we had the chocolate cake – more like a pudding, but it was fine. Simple presentation, easy to clean up – practical for such a small place. Prices are a bit high for the quality, but with this location, it’s understandable. As usual in Spain, the staff barely speaks English, even though most of the guests are tourists.
Piotr — Google review
It was a great experience to have lunch under the famous rocks. The waiter was super friendly. We ordered small octopus salad, squid, Iberian dam and finally custard with biscuit as deserts. It was really nice to find a nice salad after 2 weeks of Andalusian holiday, as there are not too many options in the Andalusian cuisine. The taste of squid was above average. However, the Iberian dam was super delicious, and I suggest everyone to order that. It was actually a recommendation of our waiter, and I am really happy that we ordered it. We end up paying 40 euros, and I think the prices were quite affordable considering the food quality.
Berkay A — Google review
Delicious and good value! I got the mysterious Iberian Secret dish and the croquets and was blown away, the meat so juicy! Come early before the seats get full!
Mari H — Google review
Nice food! The croquette must try! We had another tomatoes w tuna and FLAMENGUÍN WITH CARBONARA SAUCEwhich both come in decent size portion. And delicious. Come early to avoid waiting for table
Rachel K — Google review
The best meat we had in Andalusia, would recommend 10/10, the food was great, as well as the staff - so nice! And the view is amazing. If you are in Setenil, don't miss this place.
Maja N — Google review
Fantastic place to have a lunch, e.g. grill plate for 2 and sky bacon joghurt cake (bacon was not visible).
Marcin P — Google review
What a lovely place, staff and vibes. Staff has gone through the menu with us and suggested the best options. I am really happy to choose all suggestions as I enjoyed the meals very much. Just the toilet 🚽 is upstairs and the toilet light will turn off automatically in 30 seconds 😂 so you will stay In dark. Thank you 😊

Chapel
Ermita de Ntra. Sra. Del Carmen is a small but charming hermitage located on a rocky promontory, offering privileged views of the town of Setenil. Visitors are encouraged to climb the steep stairs to reach this beautiful church at the top of the town, where they can admire the spectacular views it offers.
Beautiful little chapel. Very simple and very elegant.

(Translated by Google) In one of the highest points of Setenil. Good views over the town and the canyon excavated by the Trejo River. It is worth walking up the street and enjoying its corners along the way. It's a shame that the hermitage was closed (a neighbor told us that it was only open for religious services) so I can't assess its interior, only its location. (Original) En uno de los puntos más elevados de Setenil. Buenas vistas sobre el pueblo y el cañón excavado por el Río Trejo. Merece la pena subir callejeando y disfrutar sus rincones en el camino. (Translated by Google) Don't expect something big because redundancy is worth it, it's a hermitage. However, the smallness gives it charm and invites you to come in and see the patron Virgin of Setenil. I advise going in the first fortnight of July, since the day of the Virgin is celebrated and they take her out in procession with what it entails. Also, they lower the sculpture and place it at ground level, so you can get closer and so on.

Scenic spot
Mirador del Carmen is a popular viewpoint in Setenil de las Bodegas, offering stunning panoramic views of the village, including the iconic Setenil sign, church, and castle. Located centrally, it requires climbing two large staircases to reach but rewards visitors with breathtaking vistas. Adjacent to the Hermita de Nuestra Senora del Carmen, this overlook provides a unique and picturesque perspective of the town.
Beautiful view point. You can see Setenil from multiple sides. Great views, definitely worth the walk up from the main steet.

Our tour guide took us here, the views were absolutely stunning and it was so lovely to relax and take it all in. There are a decent amount of steps you have to climb but it really isn’t that much considering the view you get!

Nice town, interesting to walk around and see buildings built into the hills. Tradition holds that the town's Castilian name came from the Roman Latin phrase septem nihil ('seven times nothing'). This is said to refer to the Moorish town's resistance to Christian assault, allegedly being captured only after seven sieges. This took place in the final years of the Christian Reconquest. Besieged unsuccessfully in 1407, Setenil finally fell in 1484 when Christian forces expelled the Moorish occupants. Using gunpowder artillery, the Christians took fifteen days to capture the castle whose ruins dominate the town today.

"Bésame en este rincón" is a popular tourist spot found in many Andalusian cities. It has become a typical attraction for tourists seeking the perfect Instagram photo. This traditional spot invites visitors to capture a moment with their loved ones, making it an ideal location for creating lasting memories.
Make sure you steal a kiss from you loved one, right at the top of the most romantic street, as they say :) Very cute corner by the way :) Can be crowded so you have to wait a few minutes.
Alice V — Google review
Lowest common denominator approach to a tourist attraction. I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed. Come on Setenil, you’re better than this.
Sam E — Google review
(Translated by Google) Well, it is nothing more than a small wall at a turn at the end of the slope on Calle de la Herrería decorated with the phrase that gives it its name in tiles and some plants hanging from it in pots. But because of the originality of the idea and because the photo, if you go, is a couple, it is essential to visit it. You also have to pass by there if you go up to the Torreón, so you have no excuse to avoid it, although I suppose that in season it will be somewhat crowded.

4.7
(984)
Historical landmark
Cuevas de la Sombra, also known as Caves of the Shadow, is a unique phenomenon created by rocks that stand above the streets, preventing sunshine from warming up the area. In contrast, Cuevas del Sol always enjoys light. During winter, visitors can even see stalactites in Cuevas de la Sombra. The street where these caves are located showcases houses built into the stone with only perimeter walls and no roofs.
The location looks so unique. But do keep in mind: the hills towards this place are steep and thus not possible to go on safely by wheelchair. There is a tuk-tuk service, but we didn't booked ours in advance so we couldn't use one in the end.
Ayla A — Google review
Amazing town, certainly very unique. There are two main streets either side of the river which carved out the gorge. The houses that are built into the caves were ideal as wine cellars, so Setenil is well known for its wine.
Nathan H — Google review
Great day out! Very hilly and plenty of stairs around Setenil so wear good walking shoes and a cap if you’re there in the summer as it gets very hot. Beautiful place, would 100% recommend!
Natasha P — Google review
I loved walking in here, under the mountain rocks.. along all the bars and restaurants. Great place to stop for a drink and or for lunch and dinner. Definitely recommend it 😍📸👍🫶
Gary M — Google review
A quiet place with good music and excellent food. Certainly recommend and will come back. Staff are also great and its not very expensive.
Neko C — Google review
Avoid. If you are in costa del Sol then enjoy the beach and costal towns. It is not worth the time and energy you need to drive up to this place through mountain where many don’t follow speed limits (saw a bad accident of motorbike and car) even saw many cyclists coming downhill with high speed. Place is full of commercial shops selling things at exorbitant prices. There are only two lanes where everyone goes and gets bit crowded not to mention locals driving cars in very narrow lanes. Car parking is bit far and expensive as in any tourist place.
Kankan K — Google review
It's an extraordinary place when people use a part of the mountain like this. A November evening was a good time to look around as there were very few people. There are places to eat and drink coffee.
Liudas V — Google review
Amazing, definitely worth the visit. Just park outside the little town and walk around. Not to difficult and you will enjoy it 👍😀

In the heart of Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain, you'll find Cafeteria Bar Sol y Sombra, a budget-friendly dining spot offering a variety of tapas and local cuisine. Some recommended dishes include flamenquin, eggplant tart, sirloin, payoyo and Iberian coast, fried cheese, and tocino de Cielo. It's a great place to experience the flavors of the region without spending too much.
What a wonderful surprise to eat here! We sat on the varanda end had two very nice servers. The food was delicious! I had a huge green salad with avocado and baked goat cheese in filo dough and the table also ordered the salmon with mustard sauce. It was not overdone and very flavorful. I will have this as a great memory from Setenil, which is in itself a little jewel.
Marina T — Google review
I should’ve looked up the bad reviews first, because right from the get go I felt unwelcomed by the waitress, the shorter one, light brown hair with rosy cheeks. All I asked was for a menu and then she replied “there!” I was like well ok “where’s there?” and then after that she was pissed off. I was baffled but I guess I’m not pizza not everyone is going to like me :). As I told her my order in Spanish, she out of nowhere cut me off and starting speaking broken English, to annoy me I suppose, little did she know I’m American and I replied back in English, she became silent and I said “well kind of hard to order when I don’t know what language to speak to you, since you switch from Spanish to English for no reason”. The pork dish I got was good but I’ve been to Extremadura so I knew it wouldn’t compare and due to the awful customer service I received, if I ever for some reason, decide to return to Setenil, I know I won’t return to this restaurant, and then small towns like these wonder why they go downhill. Can’t have tourists supporting you if you make them feel unwelcome for no reason.
Luis M — Google review
Not rating for the food but the terrible service they have. They dont let you sit on their terrace if you only want to have a coffee and dessert. It's reserved for meals only. They are also very rude when you ask. Pity, seemed like a nice spot!
Sena K — Google review
The staff were rude and refused to serve us food even though other tables around us were being served. The wine and sangria was the worst we had in Spain Having looked at other reviews after we were there it is obvious they only cater to Spanish speakers

Truly disappointed and disgusted by this place and its rude waitress. We sat down for a coffee and desert only to be unceremoniously kicked out because we didn’t want to have a meal. There were at least 3 other tables available at around 14:00. What kind of cafeteria is this?

Lucia is a small town that's definitely worth a visit. It offers great food and excellent service, making it an ideal stop for hungry tourists. The local cuisine includes delicious options like the "serranito" sandwich with jamon and grilled pepper, as well as tuna salad and pork loin. While language barriers may exist, the friendly service makes up for it. The portions are generous and reasonably priced, with standout dishes like pork cheeks and Bacalao a la Vizcaina.
Great little bar and bistro with tasty barbecue and house cut fries! Great prices and friendly service! Nice location along the river.
Jadran — Google review
Fried cuttlefish was delicious, fries though, not crispy enough. At such tourist hotspot, we're lucky to get a table right away. Staff was friendly, service quick.
Cat H — Google review
Nice location under the rock. The service was fast, and the food was acceptable with big portions. My sirloin steak was overcooked and a bit dried. The ventresca was tasty, and the bravas had a picturesque appearance with too much oregano. In general, it was a nice experience. The negative: the wind made fall dust and sand from the top of the umbrellas in the dish, and this ruined the experience.
David C — Google review
Patatas Bravas was great, drinks so cheap. Service, as we experienced a lot in the area, was blunt and cold.
Joshua — Google review
Salads killed by tons of mayo, we had shrimps salad and it was rather mayo with salad. Waiter was nice, the place is great. BTW the mayo is the same for all salads. What a shame…

Great place for quick stop when you're a hungry tourist in Setenil. We've been there in the busy hours, and have chosen this place just because there was a free table. And I was surprised by the amazing "serranito" - it is a sandwich with jamon, meat and the star of it- grilled pepper. I'm in love now with this sandwich, recommend to try this to everyone. And it costs only 3 euro, you won't need anything else after eating it. Besides drink of course:)

Dominguez Restaurant is a popular choice for those seeking a romantic dinner or gathering with loved ones. The establishment boasts exquisite decorations that create an intimate and comfortable ambiance. Situated in a historical twelfth-century building, the restaurant's founder has also incorporated an outdoor area, allowing guests to enjoy the city's pleasant nights while savoring their delectable menu offerings, which include meat soup, steak dishes, and fried cheese balls.
Excellent food at a quaint bar in Sentinel. Although the restaurant owners and servers spoke very little English, they were extremely hospitable. We had a large group of 14 and they were very kind and accommodating. The food was excellent as well. We had a few vegetarians in our group and they were able to serve some dishes for them. The best dish (must try) is the friend goat cheese with jelly/jam.
Gaurav G — Google review
We chose the restaurant because we wanted to sit inside, by the rock wall. That was a unique setting, and nice. But service took extremely long even though we were the only ones inside, and there were only 3 tables occupied outside for which orders must have been placed way before ours. Maybe because we were tired of waiting, we found the food unimpressive. Well, my wife thought we wasted our money.
Juan A — Google review
Rude! Can't even get something to drink. I saw how they just interupted someone mid sentence, who just wanted to ask something. Terrible place! Really, what a joke. Don't have anything positive to say about this place. Please do yourself a favor, and avoid this tourist trap!

I had my lunch here when I visited the village. The soup was ok (not my taste for 100%), the filled Pepper and the local cheese were good. All together it was so much I didn't neer any dinner in the Evening. Friendly staff.

Nestled in one of the village's most renowned streets, Bar La Escueva is a popular dining spot in Setenil de las Bodegas, highly praised by locals and visitors alike. While their menu offers a wide selection of high-quality dishes, some standout recommendations include the tomato salad with ventresca, torrija with foie gras and ham, ensaladilla, and flamenquin.

We were the last people to arrive for lunch before they were due to close so it felt a bit weird as more attention was given to removing chairs and preparing for closing than us. Generally speaking the food was quite tasty but the whole dishes just didn’t work together. Duck came with thick fat skin covered in sauce, potatoes with cream and pickled peppers. It would have been better to have sauce on the side or crispy skin as there was so much fat to remove before you could get to meat and by then most of sauce went with it, pickled peppers just didn’t not work, simple roasted veggies would have been better, oh and loose the cream from the potatoes. Same for flamenquin de merluza, which came with rice, far too dry, needed some sauce and perhaps those pickled peppers and for sure potatoes, not rice. So yeah quite tasty individually but together it just didn’t work.

I cannot give more stars for food. There was nothing special & even the french fries were not well fried. But the atmosphere & the staffs were so nice. ;)

Really cool town with a great looking street of cave bars. Parking not so easy but don't follow your GPS all the way to the bar in the car. Part before you get there.

We sat here because it was not busy as the other places, but we soon regretted it. Terrible service and mediocre tapas for the price.

Saturday morning getting up late I hoped on a taxi and for 29 euro(tip included) I reached Setenil de las Bodegas. I won’t dwell on this little place too much because I am planning to write an article at the end of the series mentioning all those places I found wonderful in my trip. However I will stop and write a short review for Bar la Escueva, a place I took a small meal in on a busy Saturday week. The bar is big, well at least comparing to those from Ronda and I can honestly say that I think it is about the same size as all three places I tried in Ronda. Plus a couple of tables outside so yes, it is big. The prices are a bit higher than in Ronda but even though I ate just a small meal I can honestly say that the food was good. The liver pate, the bread and jamon blended wonderfully and this was one of the nicest surprises from my trip even though it was just a simple, small meal

Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Castillo de Setenil de las Bodegas, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Castillo de Setenil de las Bodegas is a centuries-old stone fortress perched atop the town, offering breathtaking views of the whitewashed village nestled into the rocks. While reaching the castle may pose a challenge due to its location at the town's highest point, the effort is rewarded with stunning panoramic vistas. The steep alleys and streets add to its charm, and despite being small in size, it offers an unforgettable experience.
It was one of the most beautiful places I visited ! Just must go!

Museum
The Torreon del Homenaje is a remnant of a 14th-century castle from the Moorish era in Andalusia. Visitors can explore its three stories, which often host temporary art exhibitions, for a small fee. The tower offers narrow and curious stairs leading to a roof balcony with magnificent views of Setenil. Although the original structure was nearly destroyed during conquests, ongoing restoration work aims to revive its historical charm.
(Translated by Google) The Setenil Keep is a place steeped in history and boasts spectacular views. For just €2, you can enter this ancient defensive tower, climb its steep stone stairs, and admire the entire village layout from above, with its houses nestled into the rock. The interior is well preserved, with information panels that help you understand its function in medieval times. Although the visit is brief, it offers an authentic and enriching experience, ideal for lovers of history and architecture with character.

(Translated by Google) At the highest point of Setenil, which makes it an essential visit. Although the views from that area are not complete, on the way up and down you do have many opportunities to see different frames so there is no excuse. It's a shame that when we arrived they had just closed it for the interior visit (as a negative there is no information on opening hours), so I can't give more than three stars. I hope this one is also worth it for those who can do it. (Original) En el punto más alto de Setenil lo que le convierte en visita imprescindible. (Translated by Google) If you're visiting the town, it's a good idea to climb this medieval tower for just two euros. It usually has an exhibition, in my case a painting exhibition, and the top offers great views. Also included in the ticket is the chance to go down to the cistern and see The Lady of Setenil, a Venus statue over 5,000 years old that attests to life in the caves of this town since prehistoric times. (Original) Si vas a visitar el pueblo , no está mal hacer la subida a este torreón medieval por sólo dos euros, suele tener alguna exposición, en mi caso fue de pintura , y desde arriba tiene buenas vistas. Great atmosphere for local bar/restaurant. The owner and staff were very friendly and inviting. The food we had was amazing- croquettes, flamenquin- like a rouleade of chicken and stuffed with meat. The tomato was so fresh and soaked in local olive oil that was so mild and flavorful. I wish we could try more dishes, but the caves and streets were calling.
Kerstin K — Google review
The waiter came to take our food order after 10-15 minutes after we received the menu. Food took incredibly long to come (waited around 30 minutes for first course). The omlette with mushrooms had a lot of small hard "rocks" (like sand but much bigger) and you risk breaking a tooth. The waiter didn't seem to care when we told them, he said that it's impossible even after we showed him the rocks. In the end however, we didn't have to pay the omlette, the least they could do. Also, the food is overpriced. All in all, we would not recommend.

The Tomato Rosa was incredible, the owner was a very nice guy but the atmosphere is not very classy. There were some personal objects from the staff and beer cags laying randomly near the tables in the customer area and the decoration was a little tacky.

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is a historic church located at the top of Setenil, with construction dating back to the 15th century. The church features interesting carvings and a large baptismal vessel, and it offers spectacular views of the town from its surroundings.

Restaurante Casa Palmero is a well-known dining spot in Setenil de las Bodegas, located beneath the rock in Plaza de Andalucia. The restaurant is famous for its local cuisine, with specialties such as migas setenilenas, pierna de cordero, and conejo de caza al ajillo. Despite not being on the main streets of the village, it's highly recommended for its delicious food.
Had a great lunch here. Did not really expect to find a place that is not crowded, but found this hidden gem of Setenil. We had pimiento piquillo bacala and cazuela langostino, both were amazing.

We had a lovely lunch stop at Casa Palmero. The staff was friendly and service really fast. Food was delicious — the warm goat cheese salad and salmorejo a highlight. The indoor areas are within the rock which makes for a nice atmosphere together with lovely tiles and crockery.

We liked the restaurant, it has a great location. The service was fast and very friendly. We liked the food except for the one that one of our group got, but it is more a matter of taste than something made wrong, he got aged steak instead of fresh meat, but again, we didn’t realised what we were ordering, unfortunately nobody could eat it that dish as we had our own dishes. I would recommend this place
G. H — Google review
We reserved a table just in case after a tuktuk tour (well worth it). We ordered the iberico jamon, tomato and tuna salad and the prawns fried in oil and garlic. It was fabulous. Fresh food. Made on the spot. The photos say it all. Busy wait service but efficient and honest about quantities. I recommend anyone to come and sit at a table here. It’s noisy and Spanish. If you are vegan don’t come. They have extraordinary meat in the fridge.
Robyn A — Google review
RUDE!! They would not let us sit in a completely empty indoor space to have drinks because it was "only for food." Meanwhile, the restaurant next door, Restaurant Dominguez not only let us sit inside but was incredibly welcoming, kind, and helpful. We even ended up ordering food anyways due to the great service, and everything was wonderful.
Brittany M — Google review
This could be a very nice place to have some good local food and refreshments...BUT!!!!! when we arrived at 15.45 (Google map says it's open until 5!) one of the two very rude and unfriendly waitresses told me that "it's closed". Even when I told them that it would be ok only to have a drink and sit down for some minutes after walking around with my 75 year old mum, she answered again: "It's closed!". No reason, no sorry,...nothing... The crazy thing is that at the same time most of the tables were occupied, people had their meals and even some minutes later main dishes were just served (photo!!!). This is really a shame and you don't treat people like that. Just next to this place there was a small restaurant with a very friendly waitress who allowed us to sit down for a while and have a drink for 15 minutes before they closed.
