Poolewe in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Poolewe, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Poolewe is a small Highland village set on the shores of Loch Ewe, known for its dramatic coastal scenery and wide, open skies. Its standout attraction is Inverewe Garden, a National Trust for Scotland site where exotic plants thrive thanks to the warming effects of the North Atlantic Drift. Visitors use Poolewe as a quiet base for walking, cycling and wildlife watching, with chances to spot seals, seabirds and occasionally otters along the coast. The area also has Second World War naval history and lies within easy reach of beaches and viewpoints on the North Coast 500 driving route.
With favorites like Inverewe Garden (National Trust for Scotland), Poolewe Hotel Cafe & Restaurant, and Pool House Historic Home & Cafè, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Poolewe Hotel Cafe & Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Poolewe while you’re here. Garden
Nature & Parks
Inverewe Garden is a botanical oasis founded in 1862, located six miles north of Gairloch on the West coast of Scotland. The garden boasts over 2,500 exotic flowers and plants, including palm trees and stunning rhododendrons. Thanks to the warm climate from the Gulf Stream, this woodland garden offers a vibrant splash of color even in winter.
Probably the best gardens I’ve seen so far in the UK. It’s part of the Scottish trust. Also has some amazing trails to walk around didn’t expect to see palm trees in Scotland. There’s also a nice house that you can explore.

Absolutely amazing gardens & views over the Loch can't wait to go back again on next year's visit to Scotland. A bit disappointed with the house only a few downstairs rooms open to view. The staff were very well informed, helpful & friendly. The restaurant was very nice & able to take our two dogs inside with us. It was nice to be able to go round the gardens with the dogs as well. Joined the national trust while we were there aswell did the gardens one day & the house later in the week as dogs care not allowed in the house

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, told us where to go to see the sea otters - which we did manage to see! Plenty of car parking, large gift shop and two separate cafes provide lots of facilities. Toilets available at the visitor centre and at the main house. The garden itself is stunning, so many different species living alongside each other, seeing a Californian Giant Redwood in the flesh was a personal highlight! Couldn't recommend more, highly worth taking the time to visit!

We visited Inverewe Garden at the end of October and found it pleasantly quiet when we arrived around 3:30 p.m. Admission for two was £30. As the weather was already turning colder, many of the plants had withered, so it’s likely best to visit during the summer months to see the garden in full bloom. The garden itself is relatively compact — it takes about an hour to explore most of the grounds. There is a large car park located in front of the entrance, and parking was free during our visit.

Cheap parking, dog friendly (just had to be kept on already). Quiet (it was November). Coffee shop was open, and coffee was acceptable, but not inspiring. The map was pretty to look at but didn't really help the navigation. There was plenty of interesting plants, some still flowering well, to inspire. No funicular railway or cable car. The weather was mild and bright which was a bonus. No childrens play area. The gardens were really well maintained. Alice's walk was the highlight, excellent planting.

What a stunning place. We had one of the best days here, full of stunning plants, wonderful walk. not to busy and weather was stunning! There is a plenty to see, lots to look at and really well maintained, lots and lots of plants that are only here, you will see plants that you have never seen before. Absolutely stunning. What a place!

We went in September and there was lots of colour in the gardens. Had a lovely walk through the trees and really enjoyed our visit. The lady on reception was very friendly and helpful. The cafe and toilet area was also excellent.

Walked from the nearby campsite in the aftermath of Amy. Evidently it is in the tropics with the palms and the ensuing storm. Cafe was just what was needed for a warming drink and cake. Helpful staff. Recommended

Historical landmark
The Pool House Historic Home offers a unique experience with its nearby camping site and swimming pool, making it perfect for those looking to enjoy a hot shower after a day of outdoor activities. The on-site cafe provides delicious food and a cozy atmosphere, complete with quirky artifacts and a billiards table. Visitors can also explore marked walking trails that offer scenic views along the shore. Additionally, the home features an impressive collection of historical items, making it an educational and enjoyable visit for both adults and children.
We went this Monday thinking it might be quiet but we only just got a table at lunchtime. As it was a bit of a grizzly day we both had the soup and toasted sandwich combo which turned out to be a bigger plateful than we expected as there was a lovely salad and coleslaw with it. We bought a couple of slices of the towering lemon Victoria sponge to take home for later. Lovely thick warming soup and a crisp tasty toastie-what more could you want?! We came back later that day for the house tour and the lovely lady had such a wealth of knowledge about the property and its people-we learned such a lot about its importance to WW2 and the massive social scandal of the time - so very interesting, definitely visit if you're in the area!

What a lovely quirky cafe and house steeped in WW2 History. Extremely warm welcome, dog friendly, excellent food very reasonably priced. My partner had the Cullen skin soup for the 1st time along with a cheese and ham toasty. He said it was really tasty. The house is a fascinating insight into the role of the Royal Navy during WW2 based in Loch Ewe. Well, worth a visit

We visited this house in late April. It is a most interesting and beautiful house. Luckily our visit to Poolewe coincided with guided tour times. The lady who took us round really brought the history of this house to life. It was an absolutely wonderful and intriguing tour. So much has happened within this house and the artifacts and curios are stunning. What a place. It is one of the best historic houses I have visited. I did not get a chance to try the cafe but it is a very quirky place and I would love to return for a cream tea!!

I didn't stay at the hotel, though, I did visit the Café. It was one of the most comfortable places I've ever been to. The staff was so nice and the whole atmosphere was great!!! Would definitely recommend!! Loved it ❤️

Pool House is a fascinating place to grab some lunch, a drink or some cakes. The food is great and good value, and the cafe area is a different experience to most, with a really interesting setting. There was a WWII exhibition related to the Arctic Convoys which was really fascinating and I learnt a lot from it! I'd really recommend this as a lunch stop. We didn't do the tour of the house, though I would imagine it's really interesting, given the history of the place.

An interesting place in history the one room is full or history that was part of our time. The cafe sells and excellent snacks for those passing through ir living in this small Scottish village. A tour of the house would have been better.if the tours were better published. Even allowing for the owners being on site

This is a really unique cafe with lots of history and delicious food. We had sandwiches, tea and cake. The staff were all absolutely lovely.

Lovely staff, they were so sweet and friendly! Gave us lots of ideas on what else to while we’re in the area. Amazing hot chocolate and homage cake!

Bar
Located on a loch in the 16th-century, Poolewe Hotel Cafe & Restaurant is an informal lodging option that offers complimentary breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi. It provides clean and comfortable rooms with excellent showers and comfortable beds. While the evening meal may not have been outstanding, it was still edible with more puff pastry than steak pie. The staff at this dog and family-friendly establishment are friendly and polite. The breakfast served the following morning is much better.
Booked a small double for 1 night. It was in bedroom blavk at back of hotel. The info said it was small and it was but it was very comfortable, great shower room. Lovely big window. It suited our needs perfectly, clean & comfortable. Staff were friendly & helpful. Yes the restaurant/bar area is basic but it's functional, clean & serves food! Nice wee menu. Food & service were great! We enjoyed our stay! It's a 3 star hotel being just that!! It's was ok by us!! We'd definitely stay again.

The rooms were great: very clean, fairly spacious, tastefully decorated with an assortment of tea and biscuits to welcome you. There is a reasonably spacious bike shed. The check in staff were great and let us check in early. The restaurant was struggling to staff itself. We ended up with a nice, but seemingly inexperienced waiter. Ultimately my friends and I had a good time and would recommend this place to fellow travelers.

Pros: very close to Inverewe gardens and Firemore beach, nice location with good views. Staff were friendly and welcoming, bed was clean and comfortable. Cooked breakfast was really excellent, honestly perfectly cooked. Cons: the room was not clean. The shower and bathroom were especially dirty. Mould in the shower, silicone seal peeling away, blocked drain full of hair, dirty soap left from previous guests. The window was broken open and had a sign on it reading "do not open". Everything was scuffed, chipped, rusty or generally broken. The lights on the stairs outside the room did not work. The outer door to the stairs had a broken handle. The mugs in the room were dirty. We spoke to some locals after staying here and they said the hotel has a bad reputation. I would not stay here again.
Liet K — Google review
On arrival we were greeted by the staff who remained friendly, approachable and helpful throughout our stay. The food was perfectly acceptable. We enjoyed an undisturbed night’s sleep. A big shout out for Nick who was very affable and, for whom, nothing was too much trouble.
Stuart B — Google review
We stayed in this hotel during a tour of Scotland on our motorbikes and it was perfect for us. Great location, great staff and a bar and restaurant onsite, perfect after a long day of riding. The staff couldn't have been more accommodatiing and Gary the owner helped us with receiving and posting parcels, we needed to during our stay. Poolewe hotel isn't 5 star and it doesn't pretend to be, but if you're looking for a clean, comfortable stay with everything you need onsite, it would be worth considering.
Lawrence L — Google review
Welcomed warmly. Food was basic but hot, fresh and tasty. Our server was lovely and enjoyed a bit of banter with us all - which eas nice. Canny place for basic but good food.
Ann F — Google review
I'm not sure why they have a menu board outside offering bar food. 'Can we have a table for two please?' 'Sorry we only serve residents. We don't have a chef'. Oh well. Back to our camper for toast.
Struan M — Google review
Advertise food then don't doit when you arrive. They claimed to be short staffed 2customers in bar 4 staff behind bar.Seemed to be more intrested in playing darts glad i don't employ them!!!
