Nature preserve
National Trust - Lydford Gorge is a must-visit destination in Devon, featuring the deepest river gorge in the South West and a spectacular 30-meter-high waterfall. The area offers exhilarating woodland trails that lead to the stunning falls and follow the meandering River Lyd. Visitors can enjoy vibrant displays of bluebells and wild garlic in spring, while autumn brings a colorful transformation as oak leaves turn golden.
Absolutely stunning natural beauty spot. The guide we spoke to about the walks was very helpful, we decided to do the Hike between the Cauldron and the waterfall and the staff member was accurate when he said it's more of a hike than a walk between the two and it's a humid rainforest climate. Highly recommend if you want some beautiful views and a little bit of outdoor adventure.
Charlotte T — Google review
Stunning location with rugged walks not suited to the faint of heart—especially the last few yards to see the devil’s cauldron. There’s no barrier there! Be warned that if the wind is high, National Trust closes the gorge. And there won’t be anyone there to tell you. They close the bookshop and tearoom too. Which is a pity when you’ve travelled, as we did, for two hours to get there. If that happens, I can recommend the Castle Inn, just up the road. Very welcoming, and good food.
Martyn D — Google review
An amazing place! Really beautiful. Nice cafe that offers a bite to eat or the Castle Inn at rhe tip of the hill. We couldn't get a reservation for Sunday roast, would recommend booking ahead for that. But, they did offer alternatives too, pizza, fish and chips/burgers. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Lydford Gorge is absolutely incredible – one of the best walks I’ve ever been on! It feels like stepping into an Indiana Jones adventure: dramatic paths, lush greenery, and hidden surprises around every corner. The Devil’s Cauldron is pure magic – powerful, mesmerizing, and unlike anything I’ve seen before. The whole gorge has this otherworldly beauty that feels almost unreal. A truly magical experience I’d recommend to anyone who loves nature and a sense of adventure! Must do!!!
Olga W — Google review
I spent a wonderful few hours here, starting off walking down to the Devil's Cauldron (not for the feint hearted) walking boots advised as it can be quite slippery in places due to leaf fall, then on to Tuckers Pool and back then off across country to the waterfall side ( you can drive to the 2nd car park if desired) both sides are included in the entrance price of £12 (£13.20 if you are 👍) a lovely walk down to the waterfall then back up past the bird hide and then back across to the car. Both ends of the gorge have a tearoom and bookshop (some amazing books 😍) Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and for all of those moaning about dogs having to be on leads this is because the paths are narrow and dangerous in places and the last thing someone needs is being shoved off by a dog! There are also endangered species of plants and animals so these need to be kept safe.
P H — Google review
Worth the trip, excellent day out. Check opening times its closed in winter. Steps down to devils couldron, and can be slippery. Breathtaking and noisy in Autumn after rain. Slopes to whiteladies waterfall so suitable for buggies, Kids can bring wellies there. Car Parks, Toilets and Tea rooms at either end. You can walk between the two, but we were told it was 40 minutes one way
Runners W — Google review
Spent a lovely 2 hours visiting both the gorge and the waterfall. They are a 5 minute car ride apart or you can walk approx. a mile and a half between them, unfortunately I didn’t have time to do that. The Cauldron truly feels like a rainforest, and walking down it is wet and noisy near the end. I would definitely wear some decent shoes with a bit of a grip and don’t know if I’d take kids under 6 to the Cauldron, the Waterfall definitely yes. The cauldron has about 10 steps that are not fenced in and I presume would almost always be wet. There is a rail to hold on to. The WhiteLady falls is all downhill and then uphill return. However, there is a nice flat walk to the fall and lots of spots to sit on the river bank and enjoy the nature. The falls walk was dog friendly, and maybe scooter friendly for those with disabilities. Though I would be taking a spare battery as I’m not sure one battery would make it up and down to the falls. And there is some rough areas to the falls, pictures to follow! Both places had a tea room, and toilets. The waterfall also has an emergency phone and defibrillator… it is steep the walk back up! Worth a visit to both and it is on a bikeway (270 maybe). Lydford castle in the village also looked interesting from the drive through the village. Both parking lots were busy, but there was a constant come and go.
P_Addler — Google review
Beautiful sheltered walks across 2 sites with car parks at each (you can walk between locations across the valley rather than drive to each, just allow a couple of extra hours and make a day of it). River and woodland are beautiful, sites have focal point to each walk (waterfall at one and Devils Cauldron at the other). Lovely, helpful staff at reception on both sites able to share maps and tips on your trip. Nice cafes with coffees and snacks with delicious local ice cream range to enjoy in picnic areas. Quirky second hand bookshops really well curated and worth a browse.

Historical landmark
Nestled in the charming town of Lydford, Devon, is the historic Lydford Castle. The original castle was constructed after the Norman Conquest in 1068 but was abandoned by the mid-12th century. A second castle was built around 1195 amid socio-political turmoil. By the 19th century, it had fallen into disrepair and was left deserted. Managed by English Heritage, this site served as a prison with a fearsome reputation.
A great old castle ruin that is actually surprising how much of it remains. Easy access and just a few steps up inside. Free to the public and an easy walk into the little village and great views over the adjacent St Petrocs church. We noticed the Stonemason had added a stone 'candle' to the blockwork, a nice touch - shown in my last photo.
Mister I — Google review
Lydford boasts a large amount of history from an Anglo-Saxon Burh to being occupied by the Normans who built two castles inside it, a ringwork and a motte and bailey. Lydford was one of four Anglo-Saxon burhs in Devon built by Alfred the Great and was first recorded in 997. The burh uses the steep sides of two ravines formed by the River Lyd and a bank and ditch built forming a triangular defensive village. In the reign of Ethelred the Unready Lydford held a royal mint and during Edward the Confessors reign it was the most populous centre in Devon after Exeter. The ringwork is thought to have been built shortly after the invasion in 1066. It is in the S/W corner of the Saxon burh and uses steep ravines to protect it on two sides and a rock cut ditch on the third. It was most likely abandoned in favour of the new castle being built in 1194, it was built as a square stone tower which was used as a prison for detaining royal prisoners. In the 13th century soil was piled against the keep to form a motte and to the Northern side a bailey was added, this was not a unique way of building a motte and bailey castle but was not the common way either, normally the motte would have been built and a keep placed on top of it. It may have been used as a Court of Law and as the administration office for the Royal Forest of Dartmoor, it was used as a prison for several centuries and was used again by the Royalists during the ECW to hold Parliamentary supporters and soldiers.

Remains of a 12th Century castle / jail under the English Heritage watch. Free parking nearby and free entry. Not much to look at but good for a quick stop and a few pics. Grounds are well kept too.

Castle ruins in the town. Free entry. Undergoing some repairs right now. The castle, dating back to the 12th century, was originally a defensive structure overlooking the River Teme.

Pretty little town. Castle easily accessible and free of charge. Parking free opposite The Castle Pub. Rounded the day off nicely after visiting Lydford Gorge.

Nice old medieval castle unfortunately it hasn't been well looked after. They have finally started by installing temp fencing around the stairs case & platform. too bad it wasn't soon enough. Worth the visit to see the old castle.

Beautiful castle full of history you can go inside it's free and there's loads of old windows and doorways etc and a stairway just inside the entrance that you can walk up and look down on everything. There is a pub next door and also a very old lovely looking church to the other side which is worth a look around

Located on the western edge of Dartmoor in Devon, England, Lydford Gorge is a natural wonder and a hidden gem. Managed by the National Trust, it offers free entry to members and features the deepest river gorge in the South West. Visitors can marvel at the 27-meter-high White Lady Waterfall and experience the thundering water of Devils Cauldron as it cascades into deep pools below.
A wonderful place to visit. There is ample parking. A great cafe on site and the walk down to the waterfall was a mixture of magical and mystical. Make sure you hold those handrails!

Drove 100 miles to get here sign said closed due to high winds... there were none. Walked in anyway, new paths instead of the previous steps, a big improvement

Lydford Gorge is pure magic towering trees, rushing streams, and the breathtaking White Lady Waterfall. The Devil’s Cauldron roars with raw power, making the walk thrilling and unforgettable. A bit steep in places, but well worth it. A true Devon gem!

Very nice walk through the gorge and woods. Didn't see alot of people, so was very quiet for most of the walk apart from the birds and running water.

Beautiful waterfall and paddling area. Scary side cliff walks. But great for climbers. Alternative straight path options. I found the cafe very expensive. The staff on entrance were very welcoming and informative. Beautiful area of outstanding beauty. Quite a journey by bus. But can be done.

White Lady Waterfall is a stunning natural attraction located in a lush, verdant setting. The waterfall is known for its graceful cascade and the ethereal mist that surrounds it, creating a magical atmosphere. Visitors can take a leisurely hike through the picturesque surroundings to reach the waterfall, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Absolutely stunning location with exceptionally clean water, The trail leading down the waterfall is quite steep so make sure to wear shoes with good grip! National trust members are able to enter for free so it’s worth the membership if you like visiting stunning locations! You definitely get your moneys worth. Kids are also given an activity sheet to make the experience fun for them too! The trail is dog friendly. At the visitors centre there is a cafe and upon arrival the staff inform you of all the different trails you can take along with how long they are!

Lovely walk through the woods to get to the waterfall, smell the nature and hear the birds so very tranquil. Absolutely stunning waterfall. Good sturdy footwear needed. For the water fall you can park at either carpark depending on how far you like to walk. If you park at the waterfall carpark it's around an hour to do the circuit, if you want to do Devil's Cauldron as well from here at would take around 3hours. Highly recommend.

Lovely walk to the waterfall. Taken care of by the National Trust, so there is a cost to visit unless you are a member. Walk back k up is abit steep but plenty of benches if needed

Stunning, beautiful views, paths made easy. Accessibility routes available. Different path options. Theres 2 sites, one is the white lady waterfall and the other is the Lydford Gorge which is a miles drive down the road or you can do the 3hr trek which would take you to both sites. They're both included in your ticket. There is a bird box where you can observe the birds. Baby carriers and wheel chair available if available in exchange for your car keys. Mobility scooter available if booked in advnaced. The carriers didnt come with instructions. There was 3 available, one a front carrier and the other 2 were back carriers. I had the opportunity to accompany Helen on an Alpaca trek through Dartmoor, and it was truly a remarkable adventure! The Alpacas, led by Occy and the rest of the herd, were absolutely stunning with their charming personalities. They thoroughly enjoyed receiving affectionate cuddles, head scratches, and even posing for selfies! Helen's unwavering love and dedication towards her animals was evident throughout the experience.
We had an amazing morning meeting Helen’s fantastic bunch of alpacas. It’s truly unique to walk such beautiful animals on Dartmoor. Helen’s boys are all such characters and considerably more friendly than any alpacas I’ve met before - and that’s not to mention the friendly sheep, Snowball in particular! 🥰 Thank you Helen for a wonderful experience and all you do for your animals - we could tell they were all so loved. We’ll be back in the Spring or Summer to see the boys and the moors when the wildflowers are out. ☺️

What an amazing experience on Easter Sunday 🐣. We so loved our time with Helen and her alpaca crew 🦙🦙🦙🦙🦙🦙. I felt after our walk we really got a good idea of each alpacas character. Lil Phil was a lovely sweet boy, he loved a cuddle, Tucker had the best hair do and lovely face markings, Bubbles was very funny and cheeky, Occy loved his snacks, Barney was full of life, Mr T was a very sensitive boy and Joker was Mr Cool 😎. They were so lovely and it was a great experience. Thank you Helen and your lovely alpacas 🦙💙🦙👌🌞

An amazing morning up on the moors with Helen and her herd of alpaca's. Was so great to get to the know the alpaca's individual personalities and roam with them on Dartmoor. Helen looks after them so well, they are living in a little slice of alpaca heaven. Highly recommend.

Alpacas took me human trekking today (they lead you not the other way around). Lovely friendly animals and a lovely guide in Helen who took us on the moor for a few hours. Would definitely recommend.
Neil W — Google review
I had the BEST time visiting the alpacas at Lydford Gorge! This weekday day trip was a total win. Helen was so patient and professional, especially helping us sort out a dog-related campervan issue. The alpacas themselves were incredible, and I learned so many new things. Helen's love for each alpaca really shines through – it's clear they're all well-loved and cared for! My walk with Occy, a headstrong alpaca who loves to lead the way, was a truly wonderful experience. 🥰

What an amazing morning! Helen was lovely and clearly had a love for her family of Alpacas. She was patient and kind and very professional, she was attentive to the needs of my young daughter who has additional needs and made sure she had a special safe little area just for her and one calm “little Phil “ to be her friend .whilst all the other cheeky hay munchers, had lots of fun being mischievous , around us adults . The venue was easy to find and clean and tidy. The finishing touches were having a few snap shots of our family emailed to us later that day. We weren’t even aware of her taking as we were having so much fun. I’d definitely recommend taking a morning out of your day to visit them . We hope to go again when my daughter is old enough to walk them on a trail .
Natasha M — Google review
We had a fabulous time with the Alpacas and the sheep! They are so friendly and you get right in with them, it was so enjoyable. Helen was really nice and knowledgeable and we were so relaxed time flew by. Totally recommend
Lloyd P — Google review
If you love animals and being up close with them then Lydford Alpacas is the place for you! This motley crew of Alpacas live in a beautiful spot on the edge of Dartmoor and allow their ‘Mum’, Helen, to let humans into their world for a few hours. Now any animal lover knows that they all have their own personalities and Alpacas are certainly no exception! Having been introduced to the various characters and backgrounds we shortly set off for a lovely steady walk on the moor. Helen’s obvious expertise and confidence with the animals made the whole experience very relaxing and fulfilling. She is devoted to the welfare of these beautiful creatures and this is reflected with her deep knowledge and understanding of the Alpaca. Highly recommended….and the Lydford Gorge NT cafe is over the road for cream tea afterwards!

Had an absolute belter of a lunch here on Saturday. Been a fair few times as I’ve previously reviewed. However, the steak and ale pie was without any doubt, a 10 out of 10. Believe me, that’s massive praise from us. Wine, beer, desert, ambience and service just goes from strength to strength. But that pie! OMG. Outrageously delicious. Absolute perfection. Thanks all.
Gary S — Google review
Unfortunately, having previously had good food, today was an exception. Lack of food was the issue. Having booked a table, stating it was for Sunday roast, we arrived, greeted by a stoney faced waitress, to be told there were no roasts. Not just that but having been told this we were left at the door with no further information. It’s a shame when previously roasts were available till late in the afternoon. An apology was offered, and told food was available but only fish and chips, pizza or a sandwich, not something we had in mind when making a booking at pre 11am. Why a review, when booking double check they have food, and on a Sunday when they anticipate roasts will run out. If we had been told they had limited numbers we could easily have made it earlier. Shame, as normally both the food and service are great. Maybe a bad day for them but defo made it one for us. No roasts available anywhere else but had a great time at The Blacksmiths Arms, Lamerton, where there was plenty of excellent food and lovely welcoming staff.

Stunning food in the heart of Devon. We stopped on recommendation from the Granite way cycle hire staff, and it's so worth it! We had a stunning family meal, well presented and full of flavour. I enjoyed the wild mushroom risotto which is very rich and comes with deliciously seered mushrooms. We also ordered pizzas and kids food, which were all home made and incredibly well produced. All in all, a must stop venue. I write this as I finish my second pint!!! I'd also add, they were very honest about there being a delay on food due to a huge party, but despite this, we received our food much faster than expected, and the service was fantastic!

After walking up and down to the Cauldron and White Lady waterfall, we decided to have dinner and the Castle Inn. They served pizzas and rolls then, so we had two pizzas, a beef roll and some chips and salad. All but the beef roll was really good. Couldn't cut the meat with a steak knife.. The location and interior is very nice and really breathes old times. Due to some hard wind, we decided to eat indoors, but the garden looked amazing.
Friso S — Google review
Walked in and we were pretty much ignored by the staff, so we walked over and asked if they were serving food, we missed breakfast by 10 minutes (which of course was ok with us) but when we asked if they had any alternative food, the conversation felt over and the waitress was rude and gave us the cold shoulder. Not very welcoming and she acted like she had more pressing matters at hand. We were offered not even a drink. My girlfriend and I have worked in hospitality for years and we know that making people feel welcome is part of the job. Instead we were made to feel like trespassers. They didn’t even say hi or good morning.

Visited on a very wet Monday - it was reasonably busy so I would imagine it would be advisable to book especially at weekends. Very friendly and accommodating staff, superb food (the Steak and Ale pie is a proper pie that was packed to the brim with tasty beef). Would definitely visit again.

A must stop on any journey. I'm on me bike and have been here for 2 hours, partly deciding what to order from the kitchen because the menu is fabulous and partly because it's so relaxing and worth chilling out here. Just note that the kitchen closes at 2.30 for a break till 5.

I have eaten in many eating establishments all over the world and I must say the food here was stunning and up there with the best. There was an extra drink on the bill which was promptly removed without question, hopefully just an honest mistake. I always check my bill any where I go, as this happens quite often.
