Bagni di San Filippo in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Bagni di San Filippo, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Bagni di San Filippo is known for its natural hot springs set in a wooded gorge on the slopes of Monte Amiata in southern Tuscany. Mineral-rich waters have created striking white limestone formations, including the photogenic “Balena Bianca” (White Whale), with small pools where visitors often bathe. The village sits near the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia, making it a convenient stop on routes between hill towns such as Pienza and Montalcino. It offers a quieter, more rustic alternative to larger Tuscan spa towns while still delivering a classic countryside setting.
With favorites like La taverna di Emma, Lo Spugnone Osteria & Camere, and Mimmo e Barbara, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Mimmo e Barbara and TIR.NA.NOG so you can get the best taste of Bagni di San Filippo while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The White Whale

Outdoor bath
The White Whale offers a unique outdoor bathing experience surrounded by lush pine forest and limestone hills. The hot springs emit a sulfuric scent, but it is not overpowering once you are in the water, which is warm and therapeutic for your skin. While the area can get crowded later in the day, an easy 10-minute hike from paid parking leads to beautifully maintained natural pools. Visitors should arrive early to avoid crowds and enjoy this free attraction while soaking up its stunning natural surroundings.
Amazing experience. Muddy to walk towards hot springs but manageable. Hot springs was nice and warm. So naturale!! We didn't climb up to the top pools as we have young children but saw many people who did and it didn't look slippery. Fun experience for all. Free as well! I called a spa for prices as I wanted some facilities but it was €68 per adult and €20 per child!! Price gouging. Kinda glad they were so expensive though, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to experience the natural italian hot springs! It wasn't dirty as some reviews said- muddy maybe. Parking was easy, cheap and can pay by card. Would suggest arriving in the morning for more parking options. It was getting busy when we left around midday.

Bagni S Filippo - natural thermal pools. Public walk-in access. Paid parking on the street. Bring water shoes, not slippers! No facilities. This is nice, but sometimes getting up and down to desired areas, on the trail there, can be less than easy. The white calcified area has a deceptively good gripping surface. Lots of places to sit and enjoy. The white higher areas are much “hotter”. The pools are warm, and both are enjoyable. Bring at least 2 towels. One to dry off and one to sit on in your car going home.
Bob W — Google review
Beautiful place with basically no place to change m, to shower or so. It’s completely wild and public, so no wonder tons of people are gathering, and people always took the good spot and not leaving at all. As you can see, the hot spring is provided by the water tube so the good position with hot water are limited, so when there are too many people, experience ain’t gonna be as good as it should be. But overall a very beautiful place. Remember to bring the slider as the surface has lots of rocks/stones that hurst your feet.
Victor Y — Google review
The White Whale is in the same spot as Bagni de San Filippo, which is one of the best, if not the best, hot springs open-air mineral-filled pools in a natural park in Tuscany. Very crowded during the day, despite the plenty of space available, the park is good to visit in the afternoon when most people are leaving.
Horiace — Google review
Good parking along the street but difficult to get there. Make Sure you have solid shoes. It’s pretty crowded even during not so good weather. From street entrance it’s a 5-8 minute walk. After heavy rain it’s not so much recommended because the walk way is super slippery and muddy. Be careful.
Havi H — Google review
Very cool place to visit. Of course you have the smell of sulfer and you get a caulky film on your skin after sitting in the water. But a cool experience for sure.
Tanja B — Google review
This was an amazing place to see and immerse yourself in the mineral waters. There are numerous natural pools to soak in as the thermal waters mix with the stream. Entry is free, but you will have to pay to park nearby.
Peter K — Google review
Exciting place. Soaked my feet in the warm water. Went on a Sunday and there were lots of families enjoying the hot springs

Fosso Bianco

4.5
(102)
Park
Fosso Bianco, also known as Bagni San Filippo, is a renowned natural spot featuring the famous open-air thermal baths. Visitors can enjoy the free and 24/7 accessible White Whale and Fosso Bianco pools. While there may be a nominal fee for entry, the experience of soaking in these warm pools amidst nature's beauty is considered well worth it. For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, there are still free pools available to explore.
Fosso Bianco is a stunning natural hot spring nestled in the woods, offering a relaxing and peaceful experience. The warm thermal waters are especially enjoyable during the winter months, making it a perfect destination when the weather is cooler. The contrast between the hot water and the crisp winter air creates a magical atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere. Parking is available along the side of the road. There is a small parking fee, and while one of the payment machines wasn’t working during our visit, we found another one a short walk away. Hopefully, it will be fixed soon for future visitors. The entrance to the springs is completely free, which makes this spot even more special. Surrounded by nature and the sounds of flowing water, it’s an ideal place to unwind, take in the scenery, and enjoy the natural beauty of Tuscany. The water is warm, the vibe is peaceful, and the setting is truly picturesque. Whether you’re looking for a short stop or a full day of relaxation, Fosso Bianco is well worth the visit – especially in winter. Highly recommended for nature lovers and anyone looking to enjoy a natural thermal bath in a beautiful environment.
Adir ( — Google review
Free thermal hotspring in the midst of nature, next to a cool river. So much closer to Siena than Saturnina, less people too when we went first week of March. The higher you go up the spring, the warmer it gets. There's no shower, watch out for parking rules so you don't get a ticket.
Wil H — Google review
Beautiful spot – best to go early! Fosso Bianco is a stunning natural hot spring tucked into the woods, with striking white limestone formations and clear, mineral-rich water. The temperature isn’t super hot—more warm than hot—but it’s still really relaxing and perfect for a soak, especially in warmer months. It’s a great place to enjoy with family, friends, or as a couple. The scenery is absolutely beautiful and makes for a unique, peaceful experience. It can get really busy during the day, so it’s best to go early in the morning to beat the crowds. Totally worth the visit!
Yanet L — Google review
Good place If you are around . Went there with two kids , not to smooth to take a stroller mainly in the last part but it is manageable :) It is not slippery. Recommend to go in the morning so there is not to many ppl . No toilets. Bring your snacks but take all the garbage with you too .
Juan C — Google review
Amazing place! Highly recommend climbing up to the waterfall — the water is warmer and cleaner there. The path isn’t slippery and is quite easy. For the easiest climb, stick to the left side and follow the fence.
Vladislav B — Google review
Absolutely stunning. €1.50 per hour to park. We'll worth a visit. The water at the waterfall is like bath water
Mark B — Google review
What a wonderful experience. Hottest water is at the top. Its hot! Id guess 40 degrees Celsius at the top, 36 at the bottom.

Bagni San Filippo

4.5
(565)
Bagni San Filippo's hot springs offer a serene and peaceful experience, especially when visited during quieter times. The natural beauty of the area is marred by steep and muddy trails, making it unsuitable for families with young children or those requiring facilities close to the springs. Visitors should be prepared to walk 5-10 minutes to reach the hot springs, which lack amenities such as toilets and food.
This is the best hot spring area in Tuscany on my favorite list. There are a lot of pools of different water temperatures. The water stream is cold, and the thermal water coming from the pipes at the top of the cliff is hot. Entrance is free, the parking on the street costs 1.5 euros per hour. The scenery is magnificent, and the atmosphere is serene. Coming in the evening might seem a good choice because it may be very crowded, despite being a lot of space and pools. Wearing shoes is mandatory because it is very slippery. Is an experience not to miss.
Horiace — Google review
Bagni di San Filippo is such a hidden gem! The natural hot springs were absolutely amazing and well worth the trip. There’s plenty of parking for €1.50/hour. We parked our camper along the road with all the other cars — it was a bit cozy, but totally fine. The baths themselves are free to enjoy, which is incredible. There are multiple small pools with different temperatures, some wonderfully warm, and it feels so therapeutic to soak in them. It can get busy at times, but with so many little spots to spread out, everyone seems to find their place. Highly recommend this spot if you’re in Tuscany — it’s a beautiful, natural, and relaxing experience you won’t forget.
Jocelyn M — Google review
OMG The natural hot water baths are truly therapeutic and one of my favorite places. There's nothing quite like the soothing warmth of the water to relax and rejuvenate the body. These baths offer a unique experience that promotes both physical and mental well-being. The therapeutic benefits of these baths are undeniable, making them an essential part of my self-care routine. Whether you're seeking a moment of solitude or a peaceful retreat, these baths provide the perfect escape. I highly recommend incorporating this practice into your wellness regimen. 🌿💧 #Wellness #SelfCare #NaturalHealing #HotWaterBaths #TherapeuticExperience #SelfLove

The San Filippo hot "days" are simply stunning! You can get a first impression from the photos: the limestone formations, waterfalls, and small hot pools surrounded by the lush forest just outside the small village of Bagni San Filippo in Val d'Orcia will seem to transport you to another world. The road going through the village of Bagno Vignoni is one-way, the parking is pay-and-display – pay in the machines and display your ticket on your dashboard. The hospitality is friendly, the ice cream is delicious:) A small, quiet place that is absolutely perfect for relaxing. The bath is free, but you have to be aware that there are no changing rooms
Csaba B — Google review
What a wonderful place. We came based on a recommendation from our host and were not disappointed. The sulphur smell greets you already when you leave the parking lot and leads you down to the spring. The pools are all different in temperature and it is fun to explore them. However, this is a natural hot spring. Please treat it carefully. We saw a lot of people climbing, which is not good for the structure.
Andreas V — Google review
A great spot to relax in nature. You can park for free along the road or use the blue parking spaces, which cost €1.50 per hour. It can get a bit crowded near the pools, but it's still easy to find a spot and sit in the warm water. The temperature varies depending on the pool – it's very hot near the top where the spring comes out, and cooler further down, so you can pick the perfect spot for you. A peaceful and unique experience in the middle of nature.
Natalia P — Google review
I was a bit disappointed actually. I’ve visited a few hot springs in Italy so far. If you want a good view and cool insta pictures, by all means go for it. In terms of actual hot bath experience, there are no good places to sit down and sweat for 30 minutes. Up top the water is too hot and the baths are too shallow to lay down, further down are larger pools, but pretty much all of them are mixed cold and hot. I’d suggest going to either San Petriolo or Bagni Grande if you want a real hot spring experience where you can actually enjoy the waters.
Elias — Google review
One of my favorite sites in Tuscany, the “White Whale” definitely lived up to the hype. I would 100% recommend this site for anyone traveling in the area or even if you have to come from far as it is definitely worth the travel. We spent a few hours here and swam in many different pools ranging in temperature from around 20*c to around 40*c. Reading about this site before visiting stated there was a strong sulfur smell at this site but we found it to be quite mild and not off putting. Would highly recommend wearing shoes on your walk down to the pools and don’t forget a towel. Also noting the parking fee as well.

For 5 days in Tuscany, we have visited many wonderful places, we have eaten delicious dishes, but what the owner served exceeded our expectations. The owner is a dream come true, this is exactly how we imagined meeting with Italian hospitality. The sandwiches are the best we have eaten in Tuscany so far. At the end the owner treated us to delicious Limoncello and turned out to be the best photographer ever. we will definitely come back here.

Ignore the negative feedback as it may come from entitled individuals who expect special treatment. The owner is extremely friendly, kind, helpful, considerate, and overall amazing. The ambiance of the place is warm and inviting. I would gladly return every day if I could. We enjoyed a delicious four-course meal with wine and beer that was simply superb. Particularly noteworthy was the excellent wild boar dish paired with polenta, roasted vegetables, and salad.
Do not believe the negative reviews. Probably spoiled, arrogant and pretentious people that believe the world owes them something special. The owner is super friendly, kind, helpful, considerate, and all in all just awesome. The place is cozy and the fantastic!!! I would come back every day. We had four corses, wine and beer. It was awesome.

Amazing friendly service, fed a group of 8 with 2 kids and service was amazing, prompt, friendly and the Aperols were delicious. Then the pasta! Every dish was amazing, stand outs were the boar ragout, gnocchi and zucchini zucchini pasta special. Fresh homemade pasta that everyone raved about. If you are visiting the san fillippo hot springs you should have lunch here!

Cute little restaurant very close to the Bagni di San Filippo. Service was nice and the spot is cute. I think food is better for meat eaters though - I didn’t love my Pici with Burrata and asparagus, but my husband absolutely loved his Pici Ragout and meat dishes around looked good.

TIR.NA.NOG is a highly recommended eatery in San Filippo. With its cozy ambiance and welcoming service, it is the perfect spot for a delicious lunch. Located just five minutes away from the hot springs, this restaurant offers fresh pasta dishes like rocket and pine nut pasta and truffle-infused pici that are simply outstanding. Complementing these delectable meals with a glass of red wine makes for an enjoyable dining experience.
I couldn't recommend Tir na nOg enough as a place to eat a delicious lunch in the town of San Filippo. Lovely cosy atmosphere and friendly service. We stopped off here for lunch after our dip in the hot springs only 5 minutes away. The freshest pasta with rocket and pine nuts and pici with truffle ( both pasta dishes were unbelievable) and some red wine to wash it all down. Thank you! If we come back, we'll be stopping here again! Leah and Francesco from Salerno.

Very tasty food, always when I visit Bagni San Filippo I come to this restaurant to enjoy. I do not understand the bad reviews of this place since it actually serves very fresh and fantastic Italian food. All the Pizza’s and pasta’s I have had have all been very good. Bagni San Filippo would not be the same without this reataurant! We sat under a fig tree and ejoyed the weather. Food was brought very quick to us. The waiters are always very kind and nice to us (we are not even Italian), the lady even brought me a fig from a tree to eat. Can’t wait to visit Italy and Bagni San Filippo/TIR.NA.DOG again!

Osteria Lo Spugnone is a delightful restaurant that offers local, delectable dishes. The staff here are friendly and attentive, creating a sweet atmosphere. The establishment boasts both a charming terrace and a cozy interior. Additionally, the music played adds an extra enjoyable touch to the experience. If you find yourself in the area, I highly recommend visiting this rustic Tuscan restaurant where the owners may not speak English fluently but have no trouble communicating with their customers.
Having enjoyed this restaurant for years, we are delighted to follow them to their new location. An absolute gem, super friendly service and food created with passion, knowledge and love.

This place is a true hidden gem! Don’t be discouraged if it looks closed or quiet when you arrive, it’s probably open. Just go inside, knock on the door, and talk to the family. You’ll be glad you did. Everything here is homemade with fresh, local ingredients, and you can truly taste the love in every dish. I had their pasta with olive and tomato sauce, grilled chicken, and salad, all absolutely delicious. The family who runs it is so kind and welcoming, and the lady in charge is wonderful. It deserves way more customers and attention, because this was honestly one of the best meals I’ve had in Italy while traveling through many cities. Highly recommend!

Absolutely splendid experience, exactly what we needed. The food was spectacular. We had bruschette, tagliere di formaggio, and 3 different pasta dishes that left us so impressed. We then tried the homemade desserts, the semifreddo and tiramisù, which we all absolutely loved. Service was fantastic. We came with our 3 little kids, and it was so nice that they have like a little park to go running and play. We strongly recommend, and we look forward to coming back.
