Ancient Ruins
Butrint National Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Albania, is a remarkable olive-shaded site that houses Greek, Roman, and medieval remnants. The park's archaeological significance dates back to the Iron Age and offers an authentic experience with unrestricted access to the ruins. It features diverse points of interest from various historical periods including Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian eras.
I found this to be a particularly beautiful archaeological site. It's beautifully situated in the greenery. Everything is very well preserved. Everything is well-described. Several civilizations have ruled here, a very interesting history lesson. Even though it was 40 degrees Celsius, it was still manageable, as there's plenty of shade. The entree ticket was not expensive. There was no shop with drinks on the site in our case, so maybe you should carry enough water.
Age J — Google review
The place is amazing, full of history, and it has a very unique charm. The only thing I missed was a little shop or a refreshment stand… The area is quite large, so I would have appreciated some place to buy water or a small snack😊
Jakub Z — Google review
We visited Butrint National Park and were truly impressed – it’s a beautiful and enchanting place full of history. However, I left with the feeling that more investment is needed in the park. There’s still so much to be discovered, with some monuments partially buried or even underwater. It’s a site with huge potential that deserves more preservation and attention. I also think guided tours inside the park would be a great addition – I would happily pay to learn more about its rich and fascinating history!
Catarina S — Google review
I was hesitant to visit because of the summer heat, but the park is surprisingly shaded, and there's a lovely breeze from the water that keeps things comfortable. The archaeological site is fascinating, with explanations at each part of the monument to guide you through. It takes about an hour to walk around, and while some paths are a bit steep, it’s manageable, just be sure to wear good shoes. The views are stunning, especially from the acropolis. Don’t miss the walk up, it gives you a breathtaking view of the entire site.
Cristiane R — Google review
Well worth the visit. The ancient city has a ton of history from greek, roman, ottoman and venetian times. Mix of ancient ruins and more recent castles. Unfortunately no turtles there in early October
H L — Google review
Very interesting peninsula with many ruins of Ancient Greek, Roman and Medieval structures, highlighting the historic meaning of Butrint. The visit takes about 2-3 hours and despite the heat, it was still manageable thanks to the abundance of shade. Highly recommended to visit when you are in the south of Albania
Marc — Google review
Lovely place to walk and visit with a lot of history! As you spend some time here, would have been nice to be able to get a drink or a snack but there was no place to get at least a bottle of water. Make sure you bring something to drink or snack with you.
Bianca K — Google review
Fascinating place if you like history. I walked here one morning (slightly accidental as I was only supposed to stroll to the bay near my hotel but missed my turn). Spent a couple of hours wandering around the old ruins. It’s lot bigger than I expected and well worth the 1000 lek/10€. Traffic was gridlocked at the entrance / little ferry when I left though. Pleased I walked it despite the heat. It’s worth parking at the top in car park over looking the bay and walking the last bit

The Venetian Tower is a historic structure located in Butrint, which was transformed into a fortified town by the Venetians between the 15th and 16th centuries. Together with the Triangular Fortress, it served as a strategic defense to control water access into Lake Butrint. The tower stands near the main entrance of Butrint and has been nicely restored.
Very photogenic when reflecting in the still waters of the channel

We only spent a few hours in Durrës on our way back to the airport unfortunately, but what we seen of it was so pretty and has a very chilled vibe about it. Some absolutely delightful buildings and people.

The tour agency, Sail Like Pasha, allows for spontaneous bookings and provides positive and pleasant responses. The tours are both informative and relaxed, allowing participants to learn more about Albania's land and people. Soraldo, who is fluent in English, acts as an excellent guide with extensive knowledge of the country's history and nature. The boatride to a beautiful beach and impressive castle is truly enjoyable. Additionally, the captain displays friendly behavior throughout the trip.
We we‘re able to book the tour very spontaneous. On our request we got a positive and nice response from Soraldo. The tour was informative but still relaxed. Now we know a lot more about the land and the people of Albania :) (Soraldo talks english fluently) Would absoluetly recommend the tour!

Butrint ferry

3.3
(244)
Ferry service
The Butrint ferry is a popular way to reach the Venetian Triangular Castle and Ali Pasha's Castle during the summer months. While there is no fee to enter these sites, they are only accessible by water. The ferry can accommodate 4-5 cars at a time and costs 7 euros or lek per car for a 3-minute crossing. Pedestrians can ride for free. Additionally, local fishermen offer rides to various destinations in the area.
This is a spot where piece of the road is intentionally missing. That way, your trip is more adventurous!
Míra — Google review
The car park for Butrint National Park was full so we were told we needed to take the ferry to park on the other side. The guy was efficient and clear in his communication. A bit overpriced at €7 for a car but it was necessary at the time. We could also jump back on to go back without the car for free. Then when we left at the end of the day, we were able to drive around on the other side so we didn’t have to pay for the ferry again. It only took 5 minutes more.
Zubair S — Google review
Very basic raft with no safety whatsoever that can get you across. Price for the car is 7 €. You can get across fast or with waiting depending on the traffic. Don't excange currency here, they'll rip you off.
Dragan M — Google review
It’s great that there’s a ferry here, but the price is a bit steep – €7 for just a 50m crossing. But, what can you do? If you don’t want to pay, you can always drive around. I paid because I didn’t want to waste time.
Przemek T — Google review
It's not clear what do you need to do. Apparently tho there is someone that will give instructions to get on the ferry. Getting on it is a bit scary as it doesn't get even with the concrete on the side. Once you get on it, there is no bumper in front and it's crap feeling seeing only the water in front and not much clue how much more you can go.
Jov M — Google review
Is it overpriced? Yes. Is it still a fun experience and saves you 30 minutes of driving around? Yes! We paid €7 (they accept euro and lek) for the short ride and waited in line for less than 10 minutes. The ferry (a large wooden plank) holds about 4-5 cars depending on the sizes. There is a small shop selling Turkish coffee while you wait.
Cassie T — Google review
Not free. 200 per person round trip 700 per car rount trip Locals seem to be free
Alex E — Google review
The ferry for crossing the river is very basic and outdated. I took my motorcycle to the other side, and the cost was 4 euros.

Castle
Located near Butrint and the Vivari Channel, the Venetian Triangular Castle is a 15th-century fortress built by the Venetians during their wars with the Ottomans. Situated in close proximity to Butrint National Park, this well-preserved castle offers visitors a glimpse into its history through various rooms, a circular store, and a tower. Accessible by boat or ferry, it's recommended to approach from Ksamil for better views.
Nice wild castle, it’s in good shape for being left alone. You can take the ferry across either direction, but I think it’s better to go around from before Ksamil then head back to Ksamil through the ferry in this direction and the way we did it which was get to Ksamil first then go around. Going south and looping back has better views than heading around and then north.
Sighting S — Google review
Really cool free castle to explore. Take the ferry across the river for 200 per person or take your car for 700 round trip.
Alex E — Google review
Another castle to add up to your visit of Butrint.Accessible by boat or ferry. The Venetian Triangular Castle (Albanian: Kalaja Trekëndore Venedikase) is a castle near Butrint. The castle is located by the Channel of Vivari and by the nearby Butrint National Park. In 1572 when the wars between Venice and the Ottomans had been occurring this left Butrint and its acropolis was abandoned. This led to the creation of The Castle which was built in the 15th century by the Venetians. The castle was created to defend the fishing traps which was a very important source of food and income for the nearby settlement. The castle became seized by the Ottomans once in 1655 and 1718 after then being recaptured by the Venetians.
Oksana D — Google review
We visited in August and there was no trash despite what other reviews say. Not sure if anyone maintains the castle but it is in good enough shape and completely free to visit. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a quick stop to look inside and see a view from the top.
Cassie T — Google review
Venetian triangle castle is a fortified fortress used for military purposes. It is shaped in a form of a triangle; hence the name. The entry is free. It is not guarded or maintained. One would need to cross the river on a barge which is in itself an interesting experience. The museum is free yet the barge is 150 local currency two way per person. If in the area, it may be interesting to see. Anticipate to spend 10-15 minutes to climb all the walls and walk around.
Vera G — Google review
Small 14th century Fort or Castle situated across the Channel from the main site of Butrint. Interesting little castle. If coming from Butrint, you can reach it via a small ferry. Pity I didn't have time to go across Free entry

Butrint Ancient Theatre

4.7
(1883)
Historical landmark
The Ancient Theatre, dating back to 200 BC, offers a fascinating glimpse into history and entertainment. From gladiator fights in Roman times to classical music concerts during summer festivals, it has been a versatile venue. The nearby family-owned Gladiator Restaurant provides stunning views of the theatre from its balcony. Visitors can also explore the area around the theatre, but should be mindful of bees and mosquitoes. While facilities may be limited, helpful English signs guide guests through this intriguing site with its rich history and unique charm.
It was really an experience to see the ancient ruins in person. The park is really beautiful. Wear good walking shoes as the paths are of stone and somewhat uneven. There are toilets within the park and in the monastery. After leaving, we stopped into one of the many fine restaurants in Ksamil.
Jeff C — Google review
We went there as a day trip from Corfu and our tour guide was very informative. Lots of history to take in as well as all the scenic views also get to see loads of turtles. Definitely take a drink around with you as it does get very hot walking around but overall a very good experience and day out.
Rebecca H — Google review
As expected from a UNESCO heritage site, plenty to see and find out, tours are available and tickets are reasonable. You could easily spend 3-5 hours here just wondering around and imagining how the spaces were used.

Be avera of Snakes. There are plenty of them and sometimes they can come out of bushes but It is a nice place to visit. Part of Unesco. Entry cost €10/person or 1,000 Lek local currency. Has parking space.
Adrian G — Google review
Amazing archaeological location. Our guide was really knowledgeable and told us about the interesting history of this place. Romans, Greeks, Byzantiums and Ventians all made their mark. Great view from the top of the hill, note steps up and down can be steep and uneven and there is no hand rail in parts, have included a couple of photos of the steps. Scenic views all round. Definitely recommend visiting.
T H — Google review
Fantastic archeological site. Certainly not as well maintained and presented as major sites in the EU, but the history and the scale of this site is amazing. Someday this will rival Pompeii as an archeological "must see".
Glenn S — Google review
Visited in October 🍂. There’s an entry fee, and parking is generally available 🚗, though it can depend on the season . The site has fascinating ruins from the Greek 🇬🇷 and Venetian 🇮🇹 periods, including an impressive ancient theater 🎭. Worth a visit if you enjoy history 📜 and archaeology 🏺.

Venetian Castle

Historical landmark
Venetian Castle is a historical museum with ancient exhibits and free entrance. Visitors can climb the tower for a wonderful view and observe swallows flying around their nests. The site offers insight into how people lived centuries ago, despite being mostly in ruins. The museum features videos, statues, vases, and maps but prohibits photography inside. This well-preserved historic place has been inhabited for thousands of years and offers an amazing view from the top.
Butrint Castle as the culmination of a several-hour trip around the national park. A very charming place full of greenery and at the same time a lot of history. It is worth coming here early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and the large number of tourists. The main entrance is behind the restaurant, behind the parking lot... closer to the car ferry. I recommend it to everyone of all ages. The phenomenon is that in Butrint the leaflets were in several languages, including Polish. Respect and thanks at the same time. The advantage of visiting all of Albania is that children under 12 enter almost everywhere for free.
Mateusz W — Google review
It is well-kept, has beautiful views, and is a must-visit museum. There are interesting exhibits.
Donatas S — Google review
The historical museum presents ancient exhibits, the entrance is free (already paid the general price at the gate to the whole park, it costs 10 € for one adult), here you can climb the tower, which offers a wonderful view, and there are also many swallows flying, because under the roof there are their nests It was difficult to go up the mountain, because I was climbing the steep stairs from the theater. Then I went down another road, more gentle on the other side. There is a free toilet on the territory near the tower, in the yard near the guard, the conditions are good. I liked the garden around, especially the huge magnolia that blooms in summer. I am satisfied with the trip to this place (I traveled by public bus from Ksamil there and back). Opening at 9 o'clock . For me was enough to visit all places here until 13 o'clock. Also you can take a map of the area at the entrance.
Lina S — Google review
It was ok, but 1000 lek entrance fee, i think its a little too much for what they offer.. if at least there was some audio available.. it is just a nice expensive wall, with some roman ruins, but nothing special. I would value this visit as of max 4-5€ not 10€!
Oscar C — Google review
