Brewpub
Restaurant
Free State Brewing Company is a beloved brewpub and restaurant located in Lawrence, Kansas. Founded by Chuck Magerl, it holds the distinction of being the first legal brewery in Kansas after Prohibition. The brewery offers a variety of flagship and seasonal beers alongside a menu featuring hearty fare such as quesadillas, gumbo, burgers, sandwiches, salads, fish and chips, fried onion rings, cheddar ale soup, and sausage tortellini.
Don’t snooze on Free State Brewing CO’s food. Some of the best specials, so be sure to check those out first. They have the VERY BEST chips & salsa and chile con queso in town. Try it and let me know what you think! Sandwiches and entrees are all very well done and taste amazing. Their beers are unbelievable and barley wine is as well brewed here as anywhere you can find. My wife and I LOVE Free State Brewing Company and we are hometown locals. #Cheers 🍻

My husband and I took a day trip to Lawrence from Kansas City for something fun to do. He loves going to BrewCos because he really enjoys their food typically. We have had Free State beer in the past, but decided to skip the drinks this time around and just get some dinner since we needed to drive home. Overall it is a fine space. It is deceptively large as it has an upstairs space and a large second room back behind the bathrooms. It is clean and pretty well maintained. Nothing special, but definitely what you would expect from a brewery as far as ambiance. Our server was pleasant and helpful. The food took a little long to come out, but I think there was a large party in the bigger back room that ordered around the same time as we did. The food was... Fine. We ordered the Julius sandwich, the chips, the buffalo Chicken Enchiladas, and a side of onion rings. Everything was underwhelming, but filling. The biggest disappointment was the onion rings which tasted doughy and undercooked. I was excited to try them because they are made and breaded in house, so that was a let down. But everything else was pretty average. The chips were the best thing by far. I don't know if we would stop in again while in Lawrence unless it was to get a drink or maybe try the giant pretzels we saw other people eating. Definitely worth going at least once.

Crispyyyy chicken? I had a hankering for a Buffalo orrr Nashville hot chicken and some beers. Since we were in the neighborhood, we ended up at Free State. First off, the beers were solid. I went with the flight and ended up getting the Larger. They have a great selection of beers. The food was great too. I was expecting a crispy chicken sandwich butttt the grilled chicken wasn't half bad. The onion rings were delicious too. Good seating (upstairs and down) with some seats outside. Overall a great place for some food and brews.

Always a great atmosphere and a staple of Lawrence, KS. Local brews, great food, and all the fun you could have with friends and family. Spicy Chicken Sandwich with a few Stitchgivers.

We are here for NASCAR. Highly recommend this is the sister business of the local bakery. The beers are wonderful. You must stop and the food is even better. We will be back.

This is popular bar for the "non" students of Lawrence, which is just fine. It has great atmosphere and very good beer. I had the house lager and then a blood orange beer both of which were quite good. I ate at the bar and got the fish and chips. They were very good and made for a hearty meal. Talked to some of the regulars for quite some. It was very enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours learning about the bar and Lawrence. This bar was recommended to me by several folks before I went to Lawrence. I am glad they did.

Iconic establishment in Lawrence. Lots of craft beers to choose from, but try the Kenza wheat. Never had a less than delicious meal.

Utterly disgusted by the excuses and unapologetic staff and management. I took my mom down for Fish and Chips. We ordered onion rings and (2) fish and chips and told the server we would like to have everything come out at the same time. The server turned and took the order of the table next to us (not a big deal at all). The onion rings came out, with the food from the table next to us, I proceeded to think our food would come out shortly after that. The table next to us ate their food and sat around for 30 minutes still drinking beer after their dinner. Still no fish and chips coming out. I flagged the server down and jokingly asked if they were still trying to catch some fish out back. The server replied "it will come out when it gets done". I asked him if he could go check on it, he came back and said "its still being worked on, and the kitchen has been running behind 40 minutes all night". Well funny how we had been sitting there for an hour after placing our order and still only receiving "onion rings". I told the server I would like to just cancel the fish and chips and I will pay for the onion rings and beer. He comes back and has the bill for the total amount. I asked if I could speak to a manager, the manager comes over and says, "What's the problem?" Ok, for one that is not the right way of approaching an issue with a customer. I proceeded to explain the situation and he never once apologized or anything. He just said "I void the transaction and only charge me for onion rings and beer." He comes back and slaps the tray down with the receipts and says, "your lucky day, you only get to pay for the beer." I am literally appalled at the snarky and rude comment. "I didn't have my credit card on the tray, I asked him "do you have my card", he snaps and snatches the tray and said it was right on top, I said "no it wasn't on the tray", the server was behind him with my credit card handing it to him, He proceeds to say "it's been one of those days." NEVER HEARD I'M VERY SORRY FOR YOUR EXPERIENCE!!!!!! Very upsetting experience, and after reading reviews of other experiences with management, I hope they reevaluate their leadership team at the restaurant.

Liberty Hall

Event venue
Movie theater
Located on Massachusetts Street, Liberty Hall is a historic Beaux-Arts building that first opened in 1912. Renovated in the 1980s, it now features a 35-foot vaulted ceiling and exceptional acoustics, making it an ideal venue for concerts, film festivals, and lectures. This locally-owned theater also hosts independent movies and serves as a community meeting place.
First time here. Attended a spring Festival featuring Ukrainian dance and Croatian band. I thought the place was nice. Balcony had a good view of the performing stage. The place isn’t too big, so you’re not too far from stage.
Luke C — Google review
Wow how fun to still have an old hall in town. We ended the day with a 7:20 movie, sat front row in the balcony. Nice large screen and the sound was way better than expected. Popcorn with real butter and the drinks were cold. Hope to visit for a live show.
C J — Google review
Pretty nice venue. Small but cozy and ok sound. I feel like the sound could have been a bit cleaner, but no big deal. I’d give five stars if there were more than one toilet and more than one exit. Great experience overall and would go back if I’m in town.
Tyler P — Google review
I saw 67 movies at Liberty Hall in 2024. As of this writing I have seen 73 movies there in 2025. I don't do it just because I love movies (though I do), or because I want to do my part to keep a local treasure alive (though I really do) but because there's so much stuff to see: A great mix of new non-superhero fare *and* a wide range of classics, every week. In the last couple of years I've gotten to see Robert Altman, David Lynch, Elaine May and Stanley Kubrick on the big screen -- and introduced my teen son to a few horror classics in their original format. I am *completely* biased for Liberty Hall, but they make it easy.
Joel M — Google review
Classic and iconic venue of lawrence. Love that they have kept the retro vibe and offer unique shows, cinema and events. Also check out the cool music happening in the basement. So so cool with speakeasy vibe.
Anissa P — Google review
went to a show here last night and it was awful. i am an avid concert-goer, so crowds do not bother me, but this was EXTREMELY over-crowded. people crowding the aisles, merch tables, and the bar area watching the concert, making it hard to maneuver around. also could not see ANYTHING on stage, seems like you can only see the stage if you are on the very bottom level right in front of the stage. not to mention, the venue was at least 80 degrees. it was so hot and crowded we ended up leaving early. it’s a beautiful historic venue, but i will not be back.
Paige G — Google review
Went to a concert here. General admission was standing room only. Was over sold, too crowded, & way over occupancy limit. Exit signs were not lit & visible, drinks were watered down & over priced.
Stan B — Google review
This place is always a good time! I've seen numerous amazing bands here and it's always awesome!

The Dusty Bookshelf - Lawrence

4.7
(612)
Used book store
Rare book store
The Dusty Bookshelf in Lawrence offers a charming and inviting atmosphere with a diverse selection of books, including children's books, contemporary literature, classics, and foreign language books. The store is known for its fair prices and constantly evolving inventory. Visitors appreciate the organized sections and the opportunity to discover new titles during each visit. The shop also features a large children's area and a section for audio books.
As someone who loves books of all kinds, this shop is wonderful. Constantly changing as a used book store, if you find a treasure, get it! It could be gone the next day. The various subjects are clearly labeled and kept together. There is a large children's area as well. Audio books have a section as well. If you have books you would like to get rid of, this is definitely a place to check out. Especially with the store credit option, you can always find something else you can get your hands on to read! They have fantastic stickers, some fun shirts and tote bags with the store logo on them. Post cards too. There is a shop cat! *Sometimes* shop cat will let you touch it.. but of course it is the animals choice.

I have always enjoyed used bookstores, and this one was no exception. Before arriving in Kansas, I did my research and came here with a party of 8. The staff was extremely approachable, friend, and helpful. I prefer places with little to no modern books because I love the soul of older reads. I loved it so much here, I bought a T-shirt. Now I can talk about it at home whenever I wear it. This place is a must-stop for anyone visiting Lawrence who appreciates old stuff.
Joseph S — Google review
I love Dusty, one of my favorite book stores. They have a great selection of used books at decent prices. It is a great place to beat the summer heat or the winter cold. You can find your next great read here and hang out with the store car. On the main road next to many other fun shops.
Michelle K — Google review
This place is great! Nice staff, cute cat, and so many used books to explore. The person as the register was friendly, but the other staff went about their business (this does not bother me at all, just wanted to note). I was in the kids section and it felt a bit disorganized, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention. Used book stores are a gem these days, and this one is certainly special. Thanks for existing!
Allysa R — Google review
As someone who stops in bookstores wherever I go this place was an instant hit for me! I was looking for a particular book, they were very helpful, they didn't have it but I still left with lots of great reads! 5 stars isn't nearly enough!
Amy B — Google review
Unexpected find! Spent over an hour here just browsing and left with 6 books. The selection is impeccable. Somewhat kind of orderly or at least they try. I found some cool Japanese anime books, non fiction and some great coffee table books. Love the vintage mix. Tons of good paperbacks from recognizable authors. This would be a good place to find a needed text for school or maybe a cool book for a gift. I’m going back soon.
The B — Google review
Super rude staff, made me feel bad. I noticed that they were selling a copy of Barnes and Noble collectibles Jane Austen collection for $30, the same price that the original seller prices their NEW versions. The version they had was 1) used 2) super damaged, dented, the back was peeling, poor quality. When I went to check out, I politely brought this to the attention of the cashier in case it was a mistake, and I could see the hate and anger in her eyes. She looked me dead in the eye and said "ok" and didn't say anything else. Didn't even start like checking out my books. Made me feel ashamed. I am never going back, there's another used book store down the street. Used book stores shouldn't sell used books for the original price, especially when the book is damaged.
Jalyn D — Google review
Dusty Love Middle of the week shopping is made for new discoveries in neighborhoods. During my big birthday year of travel, I found The Dusty Bookshelf to be a wonderful, clean, spacious feast for the eyes. Even with my love for my books, as an author, I would enjoy just hanging out here to write. The store reminded me of a movie set as tomes peeked out from the shelves or sat like small towers piled up on the floor. With a resident cat that can throw an attitude, I found the black ball of fur curled up in a cushy chair. At a nearby table, sat an old typewriter in need of use. It was love at first sight. The staff was kind and helpful, leaving me to wander and ask questions. In my search to read a different genre, I found myself in the children’s section looking at the Nancy Drew series, (don’t judge!) one I never read before. Just as I was about to pay for the books, postcards and bumper stickers that had gathered in my hands, stacks of books that hadn’t made it to the shelves were at my feet! The clerk allowed me to go through a few of them like an out of control child. Overall: If I lived here, the staff would know me on a first name bases. Stopping at The Dusty Bookshelf was one of the highlights of my day.

Located in the heart of Lawrence, Kansas, 715 Restaurant is a charming Tuscan eatery housed in a meticulously restored historic building. The restaurant offers an inviting ambiance with its reclaimed wood and stone walls, creating a delightful dining experience. With an open kitchen as its centerpiece, guests can enjoy an immersive culinary experience as talented chefs work their Italian magic.
My husband and I come here at least once a week for HH or dinner. The food is always interesting, fresh and delicious as is the drinks. We sit at the bar and are familiar with the bartenders and waitstaff. They’re adding new bartenders which we are getting used to. Elliott, that we met our first night in is still our favorite bartender providing the best service, Mary is always friendly and helpful and one of our favorites. It gets busy so arrive early or make reservations. The interior is very cool, tastefully decorated with fresh flowers and there is patio seating in the front and back. I just wanted to share some of the delicious dishes we’ve been indulging in over the past year. The ribeye is top notch delicious, perfectly cooked and very large you should give it a try. Cucumber delite, any and all soups, salads, charcuterie board, asparagus and “The Brussel Sprouts” are all delicious and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Sometimes the menu choices change but there are always some main staples like the famous brussels. Im including an array of photos through the year with FRESH delicious dishes. I highly recommend.

ABSOLUTELY the best dining experience in Lawrence! Worth the drive for sure! Loved the buratta watermelon and peach with toasted crostini. Had a lovely wedge and chicken noodle soup. Loaded with chicken. LOVED the crab fresh pasta ravioli and arribatra pasta. A bit spicy but so good.

Had a great experience at 715 after a long day of moving my son into the dorm at KU. Lichen was an excellent server and made great food recommendations to me. I tried the Farfalle special which was complimented with a kale pesto and grilled shrimp. It was bright and delicious! I cleaned my whole plate! I also enjoyed the Beefsteak tomato salad. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe and the cheese was creamy and yummy. I truly enjoyed everything about my experience and will be back during parents weekend! Thank you!!!

Great ambience. Sat outside and enjoyed people watching. Lots of locals which always gives a place credibility in my eyes. We had two happy hour apps - Brussels sprouts and croquettes. Both very creative with sweet/salty/savory flavors. Date night pizza with dates, mushrooms and other savory tastes. Friendly service. Good vibe.

Seafood restaurant
Mass St. Fish House & Raw Bar is a trendy seafood specialist that serves a variety of oysters, cocktails, and more for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. This stylish establishment is known for its wide range of fresh seafood options and impressive raw bar. Guests can start their meal with delectable shrimp & crab spring rolls or appetizing tuna tartare before moving on to the main dishes. The restaurant offers a relaxing yet energizing atmosphere, creating an enjoyable dining experience for all seafood enthusiasts.
Our party of four came at the tail end of happy hour (5:30pm). We didn’t have a reservation and the place was very crowded. The hostess kindly sat us at a table with the understanding that they needed it at 6:45pm for a reservation—we jumped on it! We ordered $2 oysters, fish tacos (fried/battered fish by the way), and popcorn shrimp from the happy hour menu. They had orange wine from Slovenia which was delicious! We then ordered the fish and chips from the regular menu. Overall, everything was fantastic and the service was quick. The homemade hot sauce was yummy. If we had more time we’d stay for a full dinner, a reason to go back! Highly recommend!

This was our first time here and we really enjoyed the happy hour with $2 oysters. We had the ocean kiss which were very good although small. We also had the char grilled oysters and we would probably not order that again. Overall, we will definitely come back - all the food coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. We would like to try dinner next time.

We went to Mass Street Fish House for the first time the other night and had an enjoyable meal. First off, our server was EXCELLENT. Really personable and on top of everything. Major appreciation for her (wish we remembered her name!). My wife has non-standard food allergies (cilantro, high fructose corn syrup) and she was great at sorting out ingredients in the bread and other items for us so she could eat without concern. We had an assortment of fresh oysters and they were superb. Don't know how Mass Street gets their oysters but wish we could find more freshness like this in the midwest. Had the tinned razor clams as another starter and they were FANTASTIC. Can't wait to go back and get them again. For our mains we had the pan roasted salmon and the trout. The trout was served with hummus and a pork butter (?). The trout was great. The bed of hummus and pork butter not exactly to our liking. Nonetheless, the fish was excellently prepared and we had a great dinner. Looking forward to going back and trying the oysters and the tinned razor clams again!

I had an incredible experience at Mass St. Fish House & Raw Bar! Situated on the bustling Massachusetts Street, this gem offers limited parking but don't let that deter you – nearby streets have options. The outdoor seating area provided a lovely atmosphere. The service was top-notch – swift, cordial, and attentive. The menu is a fusion of seafood, Italian, and Mexican flavors. We tried the Ahi tuna nachos, though I wished for more tuna, the taste was delightful. The crab cakes were a highlight, and the fish and chips were perfectly crispy. While the presentation of dishes was average, the flavors more than made up for it. Their Bloody Mary was a standout, easily one of the best I've ever savored. However, the dry martini was a letdown due to its small size and steep price. The price range of $30-50 (excluding drinks) felt reasonable, considering the quality. The portion sizes were just right – not too much, not too little. Overall, Mass St. Fish House & Raw Bar is a must-visit for seafood enthusiasts and those seeking a flavorful dining experience!

James P — Google review
Surprisingly I think the atmosphere and service is better than the food here. I got the charbroiled oysters, the mussels, and salmon. The oysters were okay. Not bad in any way, but when compared to charbroiled oysters from New Orleans or equivalent, it wasn’t even close. I don’t think it was charred at all. Mussels were also okay. Broth tasted more of like a garlic butter than a complex white wine mixed broth. Maybe it’s just a preference on taste, but I prefer a broth where you can still taste the wine. The salmon dish was very good. I thought the salmon itself could have been seasoned a little more, but when paired with the risotto and squash sauce it made for a very nice taste. The texture of the salmon was also excellent, being extremely crispy on the outside yet very moist on the inside. I probably would give the food 4 stars, as you are paying a pretty penny to dine here. I think I paid around $60 for this meal, and with the smaller portion sizes I don’t think it necessarily reached my expectations for that price point. The service was great though. The waiters were very helpful and even brought out extra bread for my mussels at no extra cost and without me even asking. Overall I think this is a pretty good spot for a date night. Service bumps this up to 5 stars, but the food wasn’t the most impressive for the price point.

Ladybird Diner is a vibrant and cheerful eatery that offers modern comfort food such as sweet potato hash and fried chicken sandwiches. Visitors praise the friendly and attentive staff, as well as the delectable fare, including Papas Bravas, cheesy grits, fried pickled green tomatoes, and flavorful cocktails like the bloody mary.
Stopped in for some breakfast before heading out of Lawrence. There was a slight wait for our group of 4. There was sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, and bubbles out front for kids or anyone to occupy themselves with. We were seated and immediately noticed that every table had different salt and pepper shaker sets on them, which was fun. There are cups with trivia cards in them on the tables as well. The light fixtures above the tables are old Pyrex bowls. The atmosphere is very fun in this unique diner. My husband and I ordered the Dakota Texan with blueberry pancakes and the brisket sausage and eggs breakfasts. The was delicious! There were fresh jalapeños in the brisket sausage and eggs breakfast, and the cheese sauce was delicious! The brisket sausage was very good! The blueberries in the pancakes were fresh! The pancakes were perfect! The batter wasn't too sweet like many places tend to do. Our server was great, and all the staff made sure we had plenty of water and coffee. This spot is a definite gem, and when we are back in Lawrence, we will plan on stopping by again!

Folks says it is one of the best breakfast spots in Lawrence and they would not be wrong. You will likely wait a little while on a weekend but it is worth it. I had the yogurt bowl with berries and it was tasty. However, I paired it with the yum yum glazed twist that was as good a donut as you will find anywhere. Absolutely delicious. My buddy got one along with a breakfast biscuit and both a hearty heads up. Coffee was good and the to go cup was offered without me asking for it. Another positive bonus.

Ladybird Diner absolutely nailed it. We ordered standard breakfast fare and it was anything but ordinary — everything was amazing, served hot with huge portions. The service was spot-on: friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The classic diner vibes give it a cozy, hometown feel, perfect for a relaxing start to the day. Pricing was very reasonable considering the generous portions. Parking out front made things easy, and although I’ve heard there can sometimes be a wait, we were seated right away. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a fantastic breakfast in downtown Lawrence — locals, travelers, and brunch lovers alike.

Oh my goodness we had the best experience here and our amazing server, Kianti, made it extra special. I got the 90's Bistro Chicken Sandwich (absolutely delightful) and my fiance got the Choreesy Scramble which he thoroughly enjoyed. We had the option to sit outside and enjoy the lovely view of flowers and greenery. Kianti also recommended some of the pies they're known for, so we opted for Blueberry Basil 👀💜 cannot wait to try it. Thanks again Kianti for the excellent service and Ladybird Diner for the memorable experience. ☺️

Great service and great food. Arriving around 9am we were worried we may have to wait, but were pleasantly surprised there were a few seats available at the bar. The server was attentive and friendly, always keeping our coffee and water full. I had the truck stop and my partner had the huevos ranchero. Both dishes were delicious! Will be back for some of the amazing looking pie!

Pizza restaurant
Rudy's Pizzeria is a charming and cozy spot that specializes in serving a variety of gourmet pizzas by the slice or whole pie. Nestled in Lawrence, it's considered an ideal place for a casual date night. The restaurant takes pride in using top-quality ingredients to craft their delicious pizzas. With its funky basement setting, complete with rock decor and wood grain booths, Rudy's offers a unique dining experience on bustling Mass Street.
My husband and I were looking for a good local pizza spot and we found it. This is a little hidden gem, off the road and downstairs to this interesting secretive /vintage restaurant. You go to the rear to place your order at the counter. We first noticed the Everyday Special $7.99 for a gigantic piece of pizza, drink and side salad. Now that is no joke and looked delicious. They have daily specials and happy hour specials. Since it was our first time in we wanted to eat pizza there and take pizza home, so we ordered a large Rudy, ghost pepper breadsticks, salads and drinks. The price was fantastic. The girl at the counter was really sweet and helpful. The pizza was delicious, their crust unique and ingredients fresh, very impressive. I highly recommend!!

Stopped by Rudy’s Pizza recently, and I’m really glad I did. It’s a cozy, no-frills kind of place with a lot of heart—owned by a friend of my dad’s, which makes it even better supporting someone local. I tried their custom creation, the Pocket Za—Rudy’s own spin on a calzone—and it was seriously delicious. The crust had that perfect golden finish, slightly crispy on the outside, soft and cheesy on the inside. Mine was loaded with pepperoni, and the flavors were spot-on. You can tell they care about what they’re putting out. If you’re in the area and craving something warm, cheesy, and made with love, definitely swing by Rudy’s. Good people, great food.

Definitely one of the best pizza places in Lawrence! My favorite thing to get is the pocket za and it never disappoints. They have great lunch deals as well if you need a quick bite to eat! Other than that the food is great and super tasty. I would recommend to check this place out if you are stopping into town or live here.

Great location, atmosphere, and service. The pizza needs a lot of help. The sauce needs flavor, the crust was burnt, and the pizza was cut in little 3" squares for 5 year olds.
Jay M — Google review
Was visiting Lawrence, walking Massachusetts street, and saw Rudy's Pizzeria which is located below ground level and looks intriguing from the outside. Had planned to go to another Pizzeria a couple blocks away but when we got there were greeted by very loud music and just not the kind of atmosphere we wanted for eating. So back to Rudy's we went. Very thankful to have done so. The pizza was really good and even reheated the next day. It's a quaint little place, an interesting atmosphere with what appear to be remnants of other types of restaurants who have occupied the space in days gone by. They were even playing a kind of a jazzy type of music. Well until we were getting near to leaving. Then the loud rock music came on. Wouldn't have enjoyed the experience so much if that had been it the whole time. But overall I would certainly recommend Rudy's pizzeria!
Gwyneth B — Google review
Hands down the best barbecue pizza I've ever had. Their BBQ sauce is a perfect mix of smoky sweetness...so yummy! Their Barbecue Rudy had Ham, Sausage, Beef, Red Onions, Provolone and Mozzarella cheese. You can choose the traditional white crust or the wheat crust. In original thickness (cut in triangular slices) or thin (cut in little squares). And, they had 4 sizes (S-10", M-12", L-16", XL-18"). They have over 40 toppings to choose from...with something for everyone. Our favorite is the Barbecue Pizza with the Thin Wheat Crust!

Great pie! Fantastic location! Great service! College crowd to hipsters will love it. Wheelchair access will be tough as you are below street level while going downstairs. A must for the downtown Lawrence resturant scene.

My friend went to school in this town years ago and he introduced me to the great pizza and customer service here. The pepperoni calzone was the best I ever had. The bbq pizza was great as well 😋 I will certainly return when it gets warm again.

Cocktail bar
John Brown's Underground is a charming cocktail bar with a well-organized and friendly staff that caters to patrons' needs. It's recommended to make reservations during peak hours, especially on weekends. The bar offers a great atmosphere and serves delicious drinks in unique glassware. The menu features a variety of rotating cocktails, and the staff is knowledgeable and attentive, providing excellent service.
This place is fantastic and a must visit when in Lawrence. All the drinks are delicious and there is something for every pallet. They are well balanced, super tasty, and creative with fun names and a cute menu, and each drink has assigned adorable glassware. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a lot of cute little areas. The staff is really knowledgeable and friendly and know the craft well. We had a kid in the group and they made them a tasty kiddie mocktail. This place could hold their own with any of the great places in NY, Chicago, LA.

Wow! What a cool place! The hubby and I like to have a cocktail every now and then and finding a special little spot like this is our favorite. The vibes were so great. The staff was helpful, pleasant, and attentive. Loved it's funky vibes with all the cool decor. It's small and intimate. The menus were so cool (moleskin!) with really interesting cocktail options and clever descriptions. Plus they had NA options. All the drinks were so tasty! The only reason I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars is we had a Downtown Lawrence gift card that they wouldn't honor even though their location was listed as a place that would take it. Their system, apparently, wasn't set up for it. Again the staff was courteous and apologetic but we were very disappointed by that!

I don't leave reviews. Like ever. But tonight, my husband and I had an amazing experience. We decided last minute to go out on a Saturday night. It was later (we are in our 40s and it was past 11pm) and we wanted to avoid the large crowds, shows, and young kids. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by wait staff and seated. We were given waters and a menu. The drinks were phenomenal and the amount of hospitality was top notch. We instantly fell in love with this place. The personal touches and meaningful conversation by staff is what really made us say "wow" we found our new favorite spot. Thank you for a brief, but impactful experience. Everything was sooo tasty, and we will definitely be back

I've been here a few times for drinks which were great, as was every other part of the experience, you can get that from the other glowing reviews. My unique story is that I left my card here one night, and when I realized I thought I was screwed since they didn't open for another few days. Just on a whim I went by on a Monday to see if someone was there, and I caught one of the bartenders (that I saw the other night!) just as he got there. He was super friendly and understanding and got me my card back right away. I choose to believe this was intervention by a higher power. Thanks again!

The best place in Lawrence of you're into cocktail lounges (I am). Old historic building, sub-street level setting with corresponding low ceiling, stone and dark wood construction, low but not too dim lighting gives a unique and wonderful vibe. Drinks are really good and the staff are as friendly as they come. This is a real gem that is the best lounge venue in Lawrence and hard to beat in the KC area.

100% amazing service and drinks. My wife and I were immediately greeted and treated like royalty. This bar is the pinnacle of what it means to be in the service industry. Bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and are proud of what they do, and it shows. The drinks (all cocktails) are incredible. The atmosphere is authentic and immersive. John Brown's Underground is a must visit.

The smell is a little strange when you walk in but don’t let that deter you. The ice cream is delicious with some unique flavor combinations. There are a couple dairy free options (an orange sorbet and a raspberry sorbet) and a wide range of toppings. The staff was really friendly and they allow samples. You can’t see the descriptions of the flavors until you get to the counter, so my only suggestion would be to have a menu with the descriptions available. It might make the line move faster!

My husband and I came in for lunch last week. We each got a sandwich with a side of soup and mac n cheese. The soup has this little cracker that comes with it and it’s perfect for the soup. Sandwiches are served on fresh bread and comes with a choice of a side. In the past I purchased a coconut cake (or two) and some other goodies. My favorite is the peanut butter cookie!!! But everything is flavorful m. I highly recommend.

This is one of the greatest restaurants in Kansas, absolutely delicious eggs benedict with the potatoes and a side of biscuits and gravy. EVERYTHING was finger licking Good and cooked to perfection. The waitress was sweet and helpful and a delight to have breakfast with. I only had to wait 5 to 10 minutes and I was eating alone and they had the perfect table for me. Amongst the best brunch you can get in Lawrence! It's always busy, so you can expect a wait. That said they run a tight ship. The food and coffee were both great. I had the classic Eggs Benedict, I'd out it up there with the best few I've had. Plus the bathroom was clean.

If you’re from Lawrence you already know. Hands down best breakfast in LK. On the weekends, they offer mushroom biscuits and gravy which I literally dream about. Might be my favorite breakfast dish of all time. The baristas are very skilled and make all of the drinks with care. The bartenders are talented and creative. The neighbor Brad Bloody Mary which local cheese curds literally never misses. If you like spice, get the pepper vodka. The potato pancakes are spectacular as well. So fluffy and smooth. One of the best fruit bowls in the city. Couldn’t say enough great things about this place. Don’t let the wait deter you. The benefit of an unprecedented time is the desire to explore and find something new I was lucky enough to find this place the barista was incredibly friendly it was weird was like a coworker and maybe even a family member you’re walking your immediately captivated by the variety of colors which place is clearly stylish and quite well appropriated but one thing that it does is it answers with really good food I had a hot chocolate it’s a friend of mine had a carrot cake which I tried and honestly it was so good I think it should be smoked from a pipe with a friend of mine and she’s eating quiche or was it this it was a spinach quiche? I can tell you she ate it so fast I don’t even think I have time to take a picture and she had a mocha with whip cream the sweetness of which was literally like kissing the sweetness of whipped cream.

Rude, arrogant bartender who can't be bothered to extend a minimum of civility. The crowd here prides itself on "accepting everyone", but really couldn't be more judgmental if they were Christian fundamentalists. It's just that the target of their judgement is different. Too bad. Back when the left was more ideologically diverse, the Pig was a cool place. In that sense, it's a perfect microcosm of Lawrence, Kansas

My daughter's favorite place to go to when back in Lawrence. We are visiting from Oregon. So I tried it this morning. Big disappointment at least for my friend and I. We both ordered the French toast with berries and cream. Only I never got mine. My friend decided to share hers with me while I waited and we ended up eating her so it wouldn't get cold and I decided to cancel my order. When going back to cancel it. I was told The order never got put in even though it was on the same ticket. Sure I got a I'm sorry and money back on it but I was really disappointed. I'll go to Lady Bird next time. Sandwiches were big and delicious ... as always❣️, so couldn't wait to show it to my friend from KC! However, the staff ruined the entire experience. 😰 She got scolded for standing at the Wrong counter to order her sandwich!! Then when we went to order some pastries on the way out, it seemed like they couldn't wait to hurry up and GET OUT!! 😡 Very rude & dismissive behavior. I was truly embarrassed that I had told my friend what an awesome bakery it was. ☹️ It was a good 35 minutes before closing time when they started mopping the floors -- and there were at least 4 or 5 customers still having coffee & eating in the shop. Although the food was 5 🌟, I won't be back for a long time - if ever! So, so disappointed.

Limestone Pizza•Kitchen•Bar is a modern pizzeria that specializes in wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza pies. In addition to their popular Margherita and Spud pizzas, the menu also features pasta, sandwiches, goat cheese croquettes, and salted caramel budino. The restaurant offers a variety of hand-crafted food and beer, well-chosen wines, and a unique take on the classic Neapolitan pie.
The place was busy. Did not have a reservation, recommended. Was able to find seated bar after twenty minutes or so. The pizza was very good. Ordered the Love Supreme. Wasn't a huge fan of the charred greens on top of the pizza, but the crust and the other ingredients were fantastic. Mac, the bartender, really knows his stuff. Visited this place for the first time tonight and loved everything about it. We sat at the bar and were waited on by Cal who was very helpful and a fantastic bartender. I started out with a Halfway to Scarborough and it was so delicious and had a touch of spice, Yummy!! My husband had a rumhouse old fashioned which he said was interesting and good. Our food choices were; hh salad, arancini and the restaurant week special "Greens, Egg and Ham"!!! All was delicious and everything on the menu looked appetizing. It is family friendly but also good for date night. We just loved the he gibe and will be back to try out some different flavors!!!

We tried Limestone back when they first opened. We were not impressed and never went back. We decided to try Limestone again and the pizza was tops. We had a mushroom pizza and it was perfect. Not too cheesy and the flavor of the mushrooms and sauce was delightful. We also ordered a bowl of pasta. The pasta was greatly undercooked and served in a metal pan on a cold concrete counter with fans on the ceiling blowing from above and the entire dish was also very quickly cold. Why not have a wood cutting board base for the metal pans when served at the bar since it’s concrete? I liked the overall taste of the pasta but the meatballs were overcooked and tough. The salad we ordered was perfect and fresh with a great lemon vinaigrette taste. The service at the bar was hit and miss. As 8:30 pm rolled around the bar staff quickly went into shut down mode and we felt hurried and unwelcome. We’d go back for pizza but that’s it. Order to plate time was extremely long. If you in a hurry or on a tight timeline you might want to order ahead online.

The service was fast enough. The atmosphere is good, especially if you are there in a group. The goat cheese croquettes were the only thing i liked. The fries were too oily. If i go there again, it will definitely be not for the pizza. Had the Nola and the Bianco E Nocci. Average taste, huge dry crusts.

First time eating there great service great food A lot of varieties they offer. My wife loved the salad with the grilled peaches. She said that was phenomenal. She also loved the goat cheese appetizer croquette. She said everything was amazing and making her happy is everything. I loved my vanilla soda homemade they got limeade‘s homemade. My pizza was great we will definitely go back soon and take our family who wasn’t with us. Don’t miss out on this place. It’s usually packed also sometimes a wait, but it is worth it.

The menu says Neapolitan pizza but its not even close. The dough is not properly done i.e. no bubble in the crust. We waited almost 40 minutes for one pizza. Seemed like people coming in afterwards got their food earlier than us. The zucchini fries were good though. But again, not a Neapolitan pizza, does not taste good even as a pizza. I'd rather go to Irvine's winery for a proper Neapolitan.

First time here. Big fan of Neapolitan pizza so I was excited to try it. The inside restaurant space is small and if you have a party of two you will likely be crammed in tight on either side of the restaurant up front with people constantly coming in and out and standing next to you waiting for their orders. Not necessarily bad, but if you want privacy you don’t get it here. Service was good, no complaints there. Our cocktails were tasty but $$$, but that seems to be the MO everywhere. Our appetizer (goat cheese croquettes) was ok at best. Only two croquettes and four slices of dry toast with barely any sauce? Finally for the pizza and hence the mid-ranking review. It literally took us a full hour after ordering to get our pizza. They had a busy night of take out and prioritized that over us. Pretty slow considering these pizzas only take 1-2 minutes to cook. The pizza was good, not the best Neapolitan pizza I’ve had but still good. The red sauce was a bit too sweet and applied to thick in my pepperoni. The NOLA was our favorite and I would order again. Didn’t have time for desert as we were there for 1.5 hours and had to get back. Will again, maybe just had a random bad experience.

Nice atmosphere. Food was just okay, I didn’t think the pizza was amazing or worth the price that it was. I got the Bianca, it was pretty dry. Crust was very dry. The biggest reason for the 2 stars is the service. I didn’t even end up eating my pizza in the restaurant because they made it so late. Asked for water 3 times, got it at the end. Same thing as my drink. Super disappointing

Coffee shop
Nestled in Lawrence, Alchemy Coffee & Bake House is a beloved family-run establishment offering a cozy atmosphere and an array of delectable treats. From their renowned French toast to the spinach, tomato, and feta scramble, their breakfast menu caters to early risers. The cafe's freshly baked goods include muffins, granola bars, pies, and more.
Alchemy is a one-of-a-kind coffee shop! Artisanal, high-quality, and always presented with care, you certainly won’t find a superior cup anywhere else in Lawrence. Alchemy was the first place I ever tried a draught coffee. It’s phenomenal! Their new downtown location is spectacular, and that expanded space was much needed. If you’re a serious coffee drinker like myself, do not miss an opportunity to visit Alchemy!

Super good bakery items. The cinnamon donut (which is more the consistency of a coffee cake) is fabulous, as is the ginger cream pie. I’m confident that other things would be just as delicious. The coffee, on the other hand, was less impressive. The espresso isn’t bad, but there’s not much complexity to it, truth be told. Or, maybe it just seems weak? (I’m an experienced coffee connoisseur but horrible at describing tastes.) The pour over I selected (a Nicaraguan) was likewise OK – not spectacular. But the real issue with the coffee was the unbelievable amount of time that it took. Yes, when I went it was crowded... like, crazy busy. But still, I’m not exaggerating when I say the two drinks took about 10-15 minutes (felt like 15+), which is just too dang long to be waiting for a cup of coffee. Anyway, I’d be happy to give them another chance because the baked goods are so yummy, and hopefully the extremely slow drinks were an anomaly.

A quick stop in to get out of the cold and my wife loves the coffee. I get the benefit of sharing an awesome giant peanut butter kiss cookie. What a treat and great place to visit!

Decided to grab a quick breakfast I ordered the sausage sandwich I wasn’t a fan of it because it had a hint of either herbs or fruits. The portion was very reasonable I also ordered a coffee with dark chocolate in it it did not appetize my pallet. I will try this restaurant again but I will order some thing different.

Alchemy is hands down my favorite coffee house. If you are a coffee lover, enthusiast, fanatic, connoisseur, savant, or if you are just a casual coffee enjoyer you will love Alchemy. They take the time to understand how to bring out the best in the beans to make a purely delicious product. Whether you enjoy a pour over, an espresso, some cold brew, or just a classic drip press you will be thrilled with your drink. Oh, and as if fantastic coffee wasn't enough, they've got a world class bakery that serves up creative morsels daily that will never let you down. I have never been disappointed at Alchemy and will forever stop in any time I'm in Lawrence area.

Wishing I lived in Lawrence after eating here. I'd eat breakfast here as much as possible! Excellent food and at a good price. Pic is of their everything bagel breakfast sandwich, and the Alchemist, cold brew with dark chocolate almond milk. 😋

This place is fantastic! I was waiting for a table at Limestone Pizza - which is next door - and I went in with my family for a drink. There is beer, wine, mixed drinks, and of course, coffee. The is also a selection of pastries and other foods. Great menu and awesome atmosphere!

Every time I ask for a non toasted bagel, they toast it... If they are frozen or raw and you have to, just tell me that when I order.. since I don't want to waste food, everytime I just take it and leave.. but not going back for that reason..

The Cellar Door is a new cafe in Lawrence that offers a wide range of sweet and savory treats for breakfast and lunch. The menu includes traditional favorites like breakfast sandwiches and burritos, as well as unique creations. Customers praise the financiers, ham and egg omelette sandwich, fried chicken sandwich, rose cardamom latte, and gateau Breton.
Absolutely fire! This place always stands out every time I go. I got the cider and it was great it was warm and had the perfect flavor. The atmosphere is great to hang out and eat and drink. The food is absolutely top tier as well. The homemade bagels are to die for and there pastries always smack every time. I highly recommend checking this place out you will not be disappointed!

We're not in Kansas Any more! But wow this place is worth going back to alone. Being from Seattle, we have decent vegan and vegetarian food options, but nothing with the heart and intention as this place. It's clear the owner treats it as his craft, outlet for creativity and love. Absolutely amazing! We had the biscuits and gravy, everything bagel with vegan cashew spread, carrot cake and some espresso. All of it was amazing and felt made with love. Can't wait to come back.

I really love these pastries, they're called financiers, and they're so good. Coffee was fantastic too, my hot latte had a great body, with a mild espresso. My husband's iced latte was made with oat milk which complimented the roasty espresso flavor so well.

So good I’ve been here the past three weekends in a row. The brunch biscuit sandwich is my go to (pictured is the spicy chicken sandwich, carrot cake, and fries)! The staff are very friendly, the atmosphere is cozy, and the food is incredible every single time.

Hip small eatery just off of Lawrence's main strip Mass Street. We had breakfast at Cellar Door and we were very satisfied. I had a Sausage sandwich, which was a great combination of flavors - salty, spicy and sweet. It is not too spicy with the sweetness of the jam neutralizing it well. The muffin it came on is perfect. My family had a breakfast bagel sandwich and an omelette sandwich and they passed with flying colors. Cappuccino tasted great as well but it comes a little small. Great overall breakfast experience

This is a wonderful business in Lawrence. They serve fabulous pastries, food and drink and everything is unique but still something you find yourself coming back for. Worth it too because you know nowhere else will execute as well and thoughtfully! Staff are friendly the environment is so cozy and nice as well. Bonus points for the extremely minimal single use plastic - can’t think of anything actually! All paper products and even the branding is ink stamped which I thought looked great and was genius. This is the kind of business in that makes mass street and Lawrence what it is!!! Highly recommend for a morning coffee and breakfast date or just a quiet study sesh. Worth the trip and spend!

We love Cellar Door, especially the egg and ham sandwich. They make outstanding, beautiful, elegant, delicious pastries, tasty bagels, and fine cakes. Good variety of coffee and tea. Friendly staff. Give it a try.
G S — Google review
Every time I have come into this location the workers serve people their food before me, despite my order being placed 10 minutes before. For a toasted bagel I might add maybe if your workers gave any sort of customer service people wouldn’t mind the mandatory gratuity. I rather talk to the homeless people outside of the building because they are more polite and respectful than the staff. Come in prepared to wait if they decided they don’t like you the moment you walk through the door. Please get a new staff so I can start coming back. Actually shocking.

Minsky's Pizza

Pizza restaurant
Minsky's Pizza is a popular pizzeria chain that offers a wide variety of crust and topping options, along with spaghetti and cheesesteaks. Customers have heard about their amazing pizza, particularly the flavorful Gourmet Hawaiian Pizza. The crust is described as perfect, especially the original version recommended by the attentive waitress. While the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich was good, it couldn't compare to the bold taste of the Hawaiian pizza.
On Saturday, August 23rd, we had great pizza. Three mini pizza's: Hawaiian; tostada; and my favorite, Papa Minsky. Added a side salad and mushrooms for appetizers. Service was prompt and friendly. All the food was excellent. The toppings on the minis had great texture and taste. Salad was crispy and fresh with excellent ranch dressing. Mushrooms were breaded perfectly. My girlfriend has been a customer of the original Minsky's in Kansas City since she was a child. The Lawrence location, at 934 Massachusetts street, equals the quality of the original. Highly recommend.

We really liked the State Line location and decided to try this one since it was closer to us. Food was great. Service was great. Free parking nearby. The interior is just a bit worn compared to the previous one. 2nd visit. was in Lawrence again and didn't want to do a lot of research. roof was leaking. waitress didn't write order down and unsurprisingly got it wrong. food was good.

Trash pizza.. sorry I guess I dont get the hype.. Not really "gourmet pizza" in my opinion. The toppings dont seem to be gourmet either. Or I've just had a lot better quality pizza elsewhere. Might as well hit Pizza shuttle over this even. The only reason for the extra star is the portion sizes and the mozzarella hits pretty hard. Other than that mine came through greased up from the feet up an doughy. I was a bit high to recognize how small a 12" pizza is ig. But if you order anything less than a Large the quality of Minskys Pizza just doesn't add up for the price. In my professional opinion (however you take that) pizza is supposed to be cheap. I get that having different crust options is pretty slick. But honestly, overall.. was a pretty disappointing slice yo... 😥🌟🌟

Small, soft, acidic. I ordered a Detroit pizza. Every other place Iv had one it was the size of a baking sheet, and crunchy. I could forgive the size if it was good but it being soft and instant heart burn inducing was upsetting. Now I remember why I only eat minskys if it’s free
Aaron K — Google review
for one super overpriced in my opinion, but i gave it a shot cause the pictures looked good. My salad looked nothing like the picture, didn’t get any croutons got 1/4 of an egg, 3 pieces of chicken. the breadstick that came with was terrible. then to top it off i ordered friend CHEESE ravioli, i got majority cheese then bit in to one with meat… i only eat fish and chicken so this was disgusting. maybe the pizza is good but as a restaurant the quality of the food should be good all around.

It was great! We loved the food, especially the cheesy garlic bread!! We took adults & kids. Everyone had a great time. Service was wonderful. It was pretty loud, but otherwise it was good by all of us!
Devin B — Google review
Wow, I had heard this place had some amazing pizza but my goodness, nothing could have prepared me for the Flavorsome GOURMET HAWAIIAN PIZZA that I was about to have. The crust was perfect (original pizza - recommended by the waitress - thank you). The PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH was good, it just couldn't live up to the in your face flavor of the Hawaiian. Kids menu was good - as you can see one kid got plain pasta and the other got spaghetti. Clean Excellent Staff - friendly with quick service We never ran out of drinks Not too loud I would go back and will go back every time we visit Lawrence!

Our server really wanted us to leave and made no attempt to conceal that fact. After one iced tea refill that went into a ice free glass, Jacob asked if we wanted boxes, "two I guess?" was our confused response. He dropped off the to-go boxes to clutter up our table 10 minutes after we got our pizza. He included a bonus, the bill was balanced on top of the boxes. I guess we aren't getting anything else. Then he asked us if we had the payment ready while we had pizza in our mouths. He was shocked and amazed that it wasn't ready for him. With the moral alarm of a Victorian seeing an uncovered ankle in church, he said he would come back. I put my card in and raised it over my shoulder where he was hovering a few minutes later. We're still eating, mind you. As we were another few minutes later when he wanted the signed check with his tip. He explained the obvious reasoning that a good server attempts to hide: We were his last table and he really wanted to get out of there as fast as possible. So he stood over my shoulder while I filled it out. It was 7:20, we'd been in the restaurant 50 minutes.

Po’ boys restaurant
If you're on the hunt for a taste of New Orleans in Lawrence, look no further than Terrebonne Po' Boys. This charming eatery specializes in classic dishes like po' boys and gumbo, all served up in a cozy counter-service setting. Recently expanding to a larger location on Mass St., its popularity is evident as patrons flock to enjoy delicious offerings such as shrimp po' boys and fried chicken options.
The food here is FANTASTIC!! Anything we have tried is beyond good, you can't go wrong with any of their deserts either. When you walk in you order at the counter then the servers bring the food to your table, piping hot!! It's a nice little sandwich shop. They serve; Po Boys, Cajun dishes, Southern Deliciousness, Poutine Fries, Gumbo, and Deserts and much more. It's definitely a must try when you're in Lawrence Kansas.

The alligator po boy was delicious but the bread was a little tough to chew. The Cajun fries were nice and crispy, and the hushpuppies were also delicious. The inside had a New Orleans vibe to it and there was a sauce station with a decent selection of sauces to choose from.

This place was so funky and fun. Coolest people work here. Delicious red beans and rice for me (with andouille sausage) Cajun Cuban for hubby and shrimp and grits for our girl. Would recommend. So good.

Wonderful employees, food & atmosphere. Experience for yourself. Gumbo, hush puppies & cherry limeade were delicious.

Very cute, eclectic atmosphere. Loved all the stitch work and embroidery all over the walls. The food was super flavorful and just the right punch of spicy
Natalie F — Google review
The food was great, though there really could (and should) have been more proteins in the Po'Boys. Hushpuppies, slaw, and wasabi hard-boiled eggs were all delicious. Sleeper hit was the andouille and house made cornbread batter "corndog." 🤤... I'll go back for that gem for sure.

Wow! The surf and turf po' boy was amazing! Butternut squash bisque was also on point! If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by for a po' boy. You won't be disappointed.

We are in town for the 150th Annual Prince Hall Grand Lodge Kansas Jurisdiction and the 141st Annual Prince Hall Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Stars. We were looking for somewhere different to eat. He ordered the Shrimp Po'Boy and I ordered the Jambalaya with hush puppies. The food was very good. The staff was very cute and welcoming.
