Haines offers dramatic Alaska scenery with steep mountains, deep fjords and easy access to Glacier Bay and the Chilkat River. It’s renowned for incredible wildlife viewing, especially bald eagles that gather here in huge numbers each fall. Visitors can explore Tlingit heritage at local cultural centers, browse small galleries and shops, and learn regional history at the Sheldon Museum and Fort William H. Seward. Outdoor enthusiasts come for hiking, sea kayaking, fishing and scenic drives that feel far quieter and less commercial than many other Southeast Alaska ports.
With favorites like Lighthouse Restaurant, Alpenglow, and Rusty Compass Coffeehouse, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Rusty Compass Coffeehouse and Fireweed so you can get the best taste of Haines while you’re here. The American Bald Eagle Foundation Museum, established in 1982, is a natural history facility in Haines, Alaska. Founded to protect local bald eagle populations and their habitats, the museum offers visitors an immersive experience with Southeast Alaska's wildlife through dioramas and exhibits showcasing the region's diverse land, sea, and air animals. The museum also features a raptor center where guests can interact with 12 resident avian ambassadors.
Small foundation/museum for rehabbing birds of prey. It also has a lot of taxidermied native animals of the area, which was pretty interesting to see. There weren't that many birds that were there (about 5 or 6 I think?), which was both disappointing, but also really great (since we prefer the birds to be in the wild, not rehabilitated). Overall, if you're spending some time in Haines, would really recommend spending some time here.
Ruthie R — Google review
Museum had really good diorama, and educational information. The raptors spaces allowed really good viewing and history of each bird.
Anna M — Google review
What a wonderful place! Injured raptors are cared for here, which allows people to see them up close. It was a great learning experience. The raptor center was especially wonderful, but the museum was very interesting. The staff were very friendly and informative.
Jennifer H — Google review
5 Stars – A Special Place This is truly a special stop in Haines, Alaska. The wildlife center offers an incredible collection of beautifully preserved taxidermy animals, birds, and fish that really give you a sense of the diverse wildlife in the region. From massive bears and moose to delicate birds and fish, the displays are both fascinating and educational. What makes the visit even more memorable is the raptor sanctuary, where they care for and rehabilitate injured eagles, hawks, and owls. Being able to see these magnificent birds up close and learn about their recovery was both inspiring and humbling. The staff here are outstanding, knowledgeable, welcoming, and clearly passionate about the animals and their mission. They are happy to answer questions, share stories, and make the whole experience feel very personal. Whether you’re traveling through on a cruise ship or staying in town for a while, this is a place worth visiting.
Dane — Google review
Worth a visit, all of the birds are beautiful to see in such a safe protected space for them. The people who work here are truly special for the work they do for these birds.
Adrian J — Google review
Great collection of wildlife by taxidermy with identification kiosk throughout. Lots of materials to help understand how important the animals are. And what a treat to see several live birds in recovery at the end of the tour. There's a gift shop too. You can easily walk from the cruise port with or without the shuttle as it's one of the drop off and pick up locations.
Tina R — Google review
very cool! the taxidermy was impressive and they currently have 5 permanent resident birds - 2 eagles, 2 owls, and a hawk

Located in Haines, Alaska, Port Chilkoot Distillery is an acclaimed establishment known for its small-batch artisanal spirits that capture the essence of the American frontier. Using locally-sourced pure lake water, organic grains, and fresh herbs, they produce a range of Alaskan spirits such as gin, vodka, bourbon, and absinthe.
Fantastic distillery and bar. Great cocktails. Highly recommended place to go visit in Haines. They close and stop selling alcohol at 8pm because of Alaska state law.
Robby ( — Google review
I love me a dirty martini, and this place makes the best I have ever had. I know it’s the quality of the vodka. This place is easily the best cocktails in town. Vibrant atmosphere and incredibly friendly people. Take their tour and you learn so much about distilling, the history of the region, and spruce tip creativity.
Lisa P — Google review
We were a group of 6 birdies traveling together. Heather & her team were so delightful - H, Lucy, M, Dave. Thank you all for your hospitality! We tried all the spirits neat, and they were so smooth. The cocktails were creative & delicious. The tasting room was beautiful and cozy & was built with craftsmanship. A good vibe in this place.

Beautiful space, lovely bartender, delicious product. The photo might not be the best, but this is the best cocktail I have ever had. Show stopper! It was almost too beautiful to drink, but after taking a few luxurious nose-fulls of the glorious scent, it is one if the most balanced, fresh and glamorous cocktails I have had the pleasure of sipping. Great start to a vacation weekend. Cheers and Gunalchéesh!

A Fantastic find in the beautiful city of Haines! A must see and must try the flights and grab the cutest tank tops, t shirts and hats there too as a tiny bonus. Everything was well crafted!

Port Chilkoot Cruise Ship Dock

Ferry service
Port Chilkoot Cruise Ship Dock is located in the picturesque town of Haines, Alaska, nestled within the stunning Tongass National Forest. The dock offers easy access to various water activities and excursions, surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery including majestic mountains and lush forests. Visitors can enjoy a tranquil atmosphere for relaxation and outdoor adventures. Additionally, nearby attractions include The Wild Iris featuring fine jewelry and Northwest coastal art, as well as opportunities to observe boats, eagles, and beautiful mountainous landscapes.
A very nice and relatively new cruise ship dock that has no passenger facilities per se but is well done and accommodates moving passengers quickly off at least one ship at a time. There is a photo opportunity near the shore with a "Haines" sign and a very good view of your ship. A surprising feature in what might be considered a less visited cruise destination in Alaska.
M A — Google review
The town is ok but not many attractions. However, snow mountain view is stunning
Terence M — Google review
Nice little dock area capable of handling our midsize cruise ship. It's nice not to have to do tenders in the smaller towns. Good views of the town and easy access to the local ferries and expedition/tour boats. Easy walk to the visitors centre and tour departure areas.
Graham T — Google review
Not much to review about a dock. The small town of Haines, AK is very cute. Beautiful scenery with the mountains in the background. Many bald eagles flying around.

This is a publicly accessible dock in the middle of 1 of the most beautiful places in earth. Nestled in the heart of Haines, Mountain Market & Cafe is a delightful stop for both locals and travelers alike. This charming spot offers a unique blend of grocery shopping and casual dining, making it ideal for those on the go. Whether you're gearing up for an adventurous day on the Tatshenshini and Alsek Rivers or simply exploring the beautiful surroundings, you can grab delicious breakfast burritos or freshly made sandwiches that are packed with flavor.
Lots of keto and vegan options. Cafe that has their own coffee too. Baked goods and even some bread from Juneau. Espresso bar is open Tuesday through Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday but you can still get the drip coffee.
Amanda H — Google review
There weren't any vegan options displayed in the cafe, but I asked the staff if they had any options, and they were able to bring out something that they were preparing to put out. Vegan options aren't plentiful by any means in the cafe, but the staff was super helpful and I'm sure there would be vegan items in the market

An oasis of cool in the Alaskan wilderness, offering a surprising array of groceries, including a decent spread of organic options. Their coffee and tea game is strong, boasting a sweet assortment of brews and delish sweet snacks to fuel your adventures. Plus, for all you road warriors, their toilets are spotless—a true luxury after days on the road. Whether you're stocking up or just need a good espresso fix, this spot is a must-visit.
Misha P — Google review
Did not experience the cafe so just got groceries. Good selection of organic products in cans, fresh and frozen. They did not have the Native brand deodorant which I was looking for but had other natural deodorants. I got some hiking snacks like bars and beef stick and ginger candy. Prices were reasonable for that. The baked goods looked great but I was not there for that in the afternoon. They had turnovers and cookies and coffee. Place is usually busy. Cashier was very nice and professional.
Michele B — Google review
We spent many days on and off coming to this Cafe. It's a place where there's a small market with good (by good I mean quality) products and there's a coffee place where you can as well eat a sandwich, a pie, a soup or any deserts type. The people working there are very kind, lovely and nice. The place is big enough. There are plugs, but no wifi unfortunately for bagpackers like us. The food is really good, not too sweet for the pastries and stuff. So perfect. And the pies and soup are very original. The prices are "normal" for Alaska, the coffee a bit cheaper than other places. Just one bad thing is : plastic is everywhere. They don't ask if you stay or go, in order to put you hot beverage in a mug or plastic cup. So really it's so sad. The microplastics might be in all this food and then it ends up in our bodies. And then in the ocean or elsewhere. I've worked in restaurant with almost no plastic so I know it's doable and totally possible. I was hesitating with 4 stars because of that, but compared to what there is in Haines, it's still the best place in town despite that. Hopefully that will change soon. Thanks for everything.
Louise B — Google review
Great coffee, great vibe, friendly staff. Early morning visit was very chill with locals gathering and chatting, while also being friendly to us tourists. Great little mini store for food needs. Buy the T shirt!

The Hammer Museum, established in 2002, is a unique destination dedicated to showcasing the global history of hammers. With over 7,000 hammers from various cultures and time periods, including ancient Egyptian times, the museum offers an intriguing look at the evolution of this essential tool. Visitors can explore up to 2,000 items on display at any given time as collections are regularly rotated for a fresh experience. The museum also features a giant hammer wrapped in Christmas lights outside.
This place is awesome (if you like tools and history). They have many, many hammers from any industry that may require percussive persuasion. From the tiny to the massive, you will find it here. According to the owner, there are many thousand more in storage. Definitely worth the small entry fee.
Daniel N — Google review
Very cool museum all about Hammers. The day we visited the gentleman who owns the collection just happened by. Although we didn't get to visit with him it was nice to see him. Take your time too, as there's just about every type and style of hammer you can think of here. They also have a gift shop too.

Admission is $7 for Adults but would recommend for anyone! Amazing collection of hammers from the Extremely Small to Very Large. The guy inside named Michael would answer any question I asked... He probably got sick of my questions but was very professional and answered it like it was my first question. Highly Recommend

5 Stars – A Crazy Unique Must-Visit Experience The Hammer Museum in Haines is truly one of the most unique attractions you’ll ever come across, honestly, I don’t think there’s another place like it anywhere on the planet. As quirky as it may sound, it’s absolutely fascinating. The collection is massive, with thousands of hammers of every type, size, and purpose imaginable. From everyday tools to rare historic pieces, it’s amazing to see just how much history and craftsmanship can be tied to something as simple as a hammer. What makes the experience even better is the staff. They’re incredibly knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what they do. They’re happy to share stories, history, and even a few laughs, which makes the visit both educational and entertaining. Their energy really brings the museum to life. Admission is only $7.00 per person, which is a value for the experience you get. It’s fun, memorable, and unlike any other museum you’ve probably ever visited. If you’re in Haines, this is an absolute must see, you’ll walk away with a new appreciation for something you probably never thought twice about before.

It is open when cruise ships arrive. Must see amazing museum with so many types of hammers you've never seen before. The descriptions and displays of what has developed from humanity's first tool are fascinating. Don't miss this place. Bought the book and love it.

Haines Brewing Company, Inc. was established in 1999 by Paul Wheeler and Jeanne Kitayama at the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds before relocating to a spot along the city's main street in 2015. The brewery can accommodate up to 49 customers indoors and also offers a seasonal outdoor beer garden. Visitors can enjoy year-round and seasonal beers on tap, as well as avail growler fills at the facility.
Good selection of beers. Crowlers and Growlers to go. Enjoyed my first Sitka Tip Ale. Also drank a Lookout Stout and tested the Eldred Rock Red. It’s up the hill but with it.
Phillip W — Google review
2 stars because the beer was good. However I would not recommend or return.. The atmosphere and the service of this place was weird and unpleasant. After being informed that they do not do flights, my wife asked for 2 of the of the 5oz beers and he said “no, can’t do, that’s a flight”.. you have to come back after each little pour “not state law, that’s just our policy”. Cash only.. Which is beyond inconvenient.. after giving him a $50 for the first $6 of beer he only gave back $14 until we corrected him that he was indeed paid with a $50… if you are going to be cash only at least pay attention to what you are handling. NPR/public AM radio blasting one sided politics in the room.. look, no one cares about depressing news delivered in a monotone voice while trying to enjoy a beer.. stick to music.. Overall this place had the ambiance of a funeral home.. regardless of the cool looking building there was a reason why it was empty and now I know why.
Jim A — Google review
I recently visited the Haines Brewing Company in Haines, Alaska, and I must commend their exceptional craft beers. The "Devil Made Me Do It" IPA stood out as my favorite that truly lived up to its intriguing name Highly recommended for any beer enthusiast exploring the area! You can only pay cash and food options are limited.
Francis H — Google review
The beer was a little flat. The spruce tip was tasty. They don't do samples here (free or otherwise) and it's cash only for 12 0z pours (okay pricing) The low rating is because the staff wasn't friendly. We've been to perhaps 500 breweries and are used to friendly people, not "what do you want?" as a greeting.
P K — Google review
We went here strictly for Sitka Spruce Tip Beer. It was delicious! A nice roomy brewery with seating and good conversation with other cruisers in Haines. Also the brewmaster was good to talk with about different beers. A cool experience at a clean brewery with good beer at fair prices. We hope to return next year too!
George W — Google review
The spruce tip beer is excellent. The brutal “Devil Made Me Do It” IPA is a strong, delicious IPA. The best in my opinion is Black Fang; it’s dark and smooth and utterly fantastic.
Paul V — Google review
So, I first wanna state that I really like their Spruce Tip beer. It's genuinely good. The business practices of Paul (one of the owners) is questionable, despite his claim of "being in the business of selling beer." I had asked if it was a possibility to buy a keg, even with a deposit, and that he wanted it back within a week. I can't do that as I'm not a raging alcoholic, and just wanna enjoy their beer at home. I don't live in Haines. He suggested that I fly up a keg. I fly a keg up. Bring it by, and then he points out that there's a connector issue AND that its a different companies keg. I find out that it's not a connector issue, but rather its a practice to "not sell your beer in another companies keg". Ok, they didn't state as much. I didn't know. Nor were willing to sell me a keg afterwards, or even mention it. My time was wasted, I'm in the hole on favors and money, and no beer. Very poor business Paul. You make good beer, but you really need to do better on distributing, or really understand what the point of a deposit is. Respectfully, take it as advice from a former customer.

RV park
Haines Hitch-Up RV Park is a picturesque oceanside park located in Haines, Alaska, offering stunning views of the Lynn Canal and surrounding mountains. Conveniently situated near Main Street, the Haines Harbor, and downtown businesses, it provides easy access to local amenities. The well-maintained park features spacious pull-through sites with ample room for vehicles and picnic tables.
Two couples travelling in two separate trailers. We stayed at Haines Hitch-Up RV for 3 nights in June 2025. This site is by far the cleanest site and facilities we have ever stayed in. Exceptionally clean restrooms, beautiful showers. No charge for showers. The laundry room is a real treat to use; $3.50 for washers; dryers are 25-cents for 3 minutes with a maximum time of 36 minutes which is plenty of time for most loads. Change machine in laundry room.. Happy to recommend this site.

Such a wonderful park. Idea spot to walk to town for dinner out. We saw bears, eagles, owls and whales. The park has the best laundry room in Alaska. I spent 4 months traveling around Alaska beautiful state.

One of the best campgrounds. $65. FHU. Nice grassy sites. Clean restrooms and FREE showers (I detest coin showers!). Most sites are near road traffic, but the back sites seem to have less traffic.
Dave D — Google review
We stayed here for several nights with our Newmar caravan. There was another caravan there also, so the RV Park was busy. But it is immaculately maintained and the management/owners were very responsive to our needs. We did some accidental damage in/out of two of the spots and the campground worked to get the sites back up and operating. Our team felt horrible, but the owner simply stated it happens, they dealt with it and we all moved on. What a refreshing approach with so many awful issues out there nowadays. This campground is not right on the water, but looks to much better and the grass at each site was amazing. We used this campground to explore Haines, travel to Juneau and Skagway. Well worth it and the corner spots made for great social gathering. Our hats are off to this team, we hope to visit with more friends very soon!

A lovely stay in a charming Alaskan town We had a really pleasant experience at this campground during our time in Haines. While the staff initially seemed a bit rigid in handling our request, the owners quickly stepped in and took care of everything with great kindness and professionalism. From extra Wi-Fi access to helping us find a more suitable spot, they made sure we felt welcome and well looked after. Thanks to their personal attention, everything was resolved smoothly and made us feel right at home. Haines itself is an absolute gem – full of natural beauty and friendly people. We’d gladly come back anytime!

I walked from the cruise port to Rusty Compass Coffeehouse and found it to be worthwhile. The service was exceptional, and I cannot emphasize that enough. Intrigued by the Mexican Mocha, I decided to order it but ended up not liking it. When a worker asked about my experience, without saying anything negative, she acknowledged that others might not order it again either. She promptly offered me an alternative and ensured that I left with a coffee I enjoyed.
Very good coffee, incredible baked goods, and a very warm staff. Far better baked books than anything I find back home in Los Angeles.

Rusty Compass Coffeehouse is absolutely adorable - one of those rare finds that instantly makes you feel welcome. It’s clearly loved by both locals and tourists, and for good reason. The service is super friendly, and the staff go out of their way to make you feel right at home. What more could you ask for in a cozy, inviting café? Highly recommended!

Our favourite little place in Haines. They do great coffee and the people working there are absolutely lovely! I had the Cuban and it was delicious, and the best part was they had really good gluten free bread for my partner! She had the turkey bacon Swiss and it was awesome!

Cozy little coffee shop in Haines' downtown. Coffee and food was reasonably priced with a good variety. It was clean, well decorated, and overall great vibes. My sister accidentally knocked over her coffee onto the floor and the barista was quick to come not only clean it up, but make her a whole new coffee, which was so nice of her. Would recommend if you're looking for coffee or a breakfast place in Haines.

We got to go to opening night for summer 2023. Was super busy so slow getting food out which was to be expected. Staff was excellent and kept stopping by to see if we needed anything. Food was good as well. It was super noisy with all the staff and customers so it was hard to hear without talking loudly. I'm excited to try some more of the menu next time

We had pizza and salmon sandwich on brioche buns. Good good and outside seating has view of harbour. Only draw back is that Hostess staff is not organized or able to predict wait times.

Best restaurant in Haines. Great food, local beers, and wine at reasonable (not tourist rip off) prices.

Delicious pizzas, salads, desserts, local beers, great service and atmosphere! Beautiful views from the deck.

Great spot for dinner, right next to Port Chilkoot Distillery. Even better if you get a sunny patio day! Food was great, tasty thin crust pizza w fresh ingredients. Local beer selection. Our server seemed to be newer and was also bartending on a busy night so our service was ok. Would recommend going here.

Pretty expensive for a large pizza, which gets cold in a matter of minutes. 42$ a pizza. More expensive than shown in the menu.

Pizza restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Haines, Alpenglow is a delightful culinary find that promises to tantalize your taste buds. This cozy eatery specializes in wood-fired pizza, offering an array of gourmet salads and fire-roasted sandwiches crafted on freshly baked bread. Each pizza boasts a perfectly cooked crust that strikes the ideal balance between crunch and chewiness, making every bite utterly satisfying.
3rd owner is the charm! Very friendly and the pizza is phenomenal. We had the $Money Penny$ and on the owners recommendation added the picked onion. Delicious ! Stop in and enjoy some homemade pizza with a great crust.

Absolutely loved Alpenglow Pizza in Haines! Located right on Main Street, this cozy spot serves up delicious, made-to-order wood-fired pizzas and more. The crust was perfectly crisp, the toppings fresh and flavorful, and the service was warm and welcoming. It has that laid-back, casual Alaskan vibe that makes you want to stay a while. Great food, friendly people, and a charming atmosphere...what more could you ask for? Don’t miss it if you’re in town! Highly recommended!

You can tell they take absolute pride here, this is a authentic and local pizzeria that makes everything a house. All the food is fresh, the wood is cut fresh, and the pizza was super tasty! Great place!
Mike H — Google review
Updated and upgraded overall rating on 7-23-25 because the restaurant read my review and responded within a couple days of our visit I bumped their rating up. The owner response means a lot to me and suggest they are welcoming feedback. The owner comments reflected that they read my review also and not just a standard response. I recommend this place and would go back. Original: The pizza was decent. We had the supreme. The toppings were good. The sausage was crumbly which is different but good and not too spicy. There is only one size of pizza which was on the small side for us but two would have been too much. We got there too late for sit down so it’s nice they still have a take out option but be advised. The pizza was ready in about 45 minutes and it was hot.
Michele B — Google review
We were craving pizza and this was over and above what we were needing! We ordered the rainbow salad to share and the supreme pizza. The salad was phenomenal and the pizza was so yummy! Great flavors and perfect crust. We saw the sign to bus our table but the bin for dirty dishes was over full, so rather than load everything on the trash can or over fill the bin, we left the dishes on the table, all stacked up on the pizza pan. I was surprised that the staff hollered at us as we were leaving to put the dishes in the bin. Like, hollered at us, across the restaurant. Left a bad taste in my mouth. We were there at 4pm - not a super busy time. So, bus your own table, folks. Even if the dirty dishes bin is full. 😳

I had the Diavala pizza. Wow! The ingredients are fresh and the combination was probably the best pizza I've had. The store is in downtown Haines and easy to find. There are many choices and they're all baked in a fire oven with the lovely char on the bottom. I highly recommend this restaurant! Oh, and it was fast.
Gretchen D — Google review
Absolutely phenomenal!!! Our cruise ship tendered us out to do shore excursions and we ended up stranded for a bit so many of us flocked to Alpenglow from the recommendation of our guides and the locals and I can’t overstate how great these people are at their jobs! As someone with links to Chicago, I know a good pizza when I see and taste one and this would rival even some of those restaurants. Wonderful work ethic and positivity which helped brighten up a dreary day! In fact, the whole town is just awesome. I don’t know if I’ll ever travel back to Alaska but if I do, Haines is the place to be!
Kate B — Google review
We were so excited to find wood fired pizza. But, alas, our excitement was ill founded. Yes, their crust was great. But the service was mediocre and the place was less than clean. Only one (out of two) of the bathrooms were in service and it was disgusting. They don't serve beer or wine, as the Google listing claims, and their soda dispenser wasn't working either. Basically a big bummer

Day 2

Off the beaten path
For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like The Kroschel Wildlife Center. Not quite as popular as Hammer Museum, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

I went on this excursion because my friend had this on her bucket list, really didn’t want to go. I was so glad I did! This was hands down THE best excursion I’ve ever been on in all of my cruise travels. The experience was engaging-right from the moment we entered the property. Patrick was informative and a wonderful start to this amazing visit. His relationship with the wolves was mesmerizing. Then you get to meet The Host, Mr. Kroschel. I was blown away by the depth and breadth of his knowledge and by just how much he truly cares. He wears it like the incredible badge of honor it is. His animals are beautifully housed, the area looking as if it were put together by a mad genius-which it was. I was immediately smitten. With all of it. Lock, stock and barrel, as my Gram used to say. The time seemed to be over in a blink and I was sad and reluctant to leave. The connection you felt coming from him; connection to his animals, his surroundings and his guests was laser sharp and awe-inspiring to witness-that’s how I felt-I was witnessing true genius and great heart. I left a grateful woman.

I LOVED this place, and if you're an animal lover, you will as well. Steve was great and made the tour fun & interactive. It's definitely a better environment than a zoo, but that also removes a level of safety for kids and dumb people lol. I hope Steve is able to keep living his dream of caring for animals in a natural environment for many years to come. If your ship excursion is full, I *think* chillkat tours is who you can call, or get ahold of the center and they'll link you up.
Debra — Google review
Steve is a knowledgeable host that clearly has a close bond with his animals. Patrick really made my visit so memorable, making sure my sister, son & his fiance and I had one on one time with the animals. I wish I would have gotten a photo with him. I wanted to stay in one of their cabins and never leave. I look at my photos every day. The porcupine was my favorite. And I'm from there, not even a tourist. I returned to Seattle and still think about The Wildlife Center every day.
Katrina H — Google review
I would give this 6 stars if I could. We went as part of a cruise ship excursion and everything was amazing from the bus driver to everyone working there. The animals were well cared for and we got amazing photos. We had a 2 year old with us and you will need to watch kids closely as these are wild animals (no fingers in fences!). Like others said it was a decent amount of walking on dirt paths and not stroller friendly. There was a gift shop at the end. There were also a couple of bathrooms.
Amanda W — Google review
Interesting place where it is obvious that there is much love and care for the animals here. Informative tour overall. The only downfall is that the tour group was too large so it made it uncomfortable to stand around and wait your turn to see the animals. I think that our tour could have been split into 2 groups instead of one large one. The bus ride from the cruise port was great. The bus driver was EXTREMELY interesting and full of fun stories. The bus ride to and from the Kroschel Wildlife Centre was one of our most favorite bus rides in all of the tours we have taken... and we take A LOT!!!
Tori C — Google review
We had such a great day at the Center. Mr. Kroschel was a great story teller of the animals. We learned so much and enjoyed each and every animal we were able to see. Our bus driver, was excellent. She told us so many local stories and helped us spot wildlife along the way. If you are not sure if you should do this tour or another. Choose this one. You will be happy you did.
Julie W — Google review
Toured the center as an excursion via Princess Cruise Lines and by far one of my favorite excursions of the trip. Connecting to animals was amazing and my daughter had a blast. She was very fond of Duck Henry and his caribou neighbors, although her joy of feeding them may leader to an ungulate obesity epidemic.
Derek H — Google review
What an amazing experience. This is by far one of if not THE best excursions I've taken while cruising. Steve, Mario and Mario's daughter were fantastic. They are information and use humor to keep things lively. They should be nominated for a humanitarian award for all that they do for education and the environment. This is a long review so in the words of Steve. "Hey Mario, they are losing interest so it's time to move along"

The Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center, located in Klukwan, Alaska, marks a revival of Tlingit art and culture. This center displays four intricate house posts and a rain screen, known as the 'whale house collection,' carved by a prominent Tlingit artist over two centuries ago. Additionally, the museum features three historic tribal houses including the recently returned frog house. Visitors can also observe eagles through telescopes provided on site at the Bald Eagle Preserve Visitor Center.
Beautiful place. Gives a visitor so much insight and respect for the native people of this part of the world. Highly recommend

The place is very nice, the narration and experience were good. Unless you're very much into history of various human cultures I don't think it'll be too exciting. If you're an ancient culture enthusiast, you'll like it.

Beautiful 😍, clan artifacts and tours are done here. This is the Tlingit Mother Village of Klukwan. The largest Bald Eagle Reserve sits right next "door" here on the Chilkat River. 🦅

Fascinating, authentic glimpse into a culture being embraced and reclaimed by the descendants of its creators. Our guides were 21st century enthusiasts of a way of life that has a lot to teach us all.
LauraTuckerFletcher H — Google review
They have amazing artifacts from the old Tlingit clan houses in Klukwan. The craftsmanship is great. One of the carvers is said to be the Michaelangelo of the north west. The collection includes house posts (similar to totem pole a in style) and rainwall screens. The tour was very educational. They tell old stories and perform dances. I had a great time!
Jason C — Google review
It is a small museum with interesting First Nation exhibits but not the totem poles we were led to believe we're here. Additionally, the price is quite steep for the half hour it takes to cover everything in there.

Haines Borough Public Library is the only public library in Haines, originally established in 1928 and later relocated to its current building designed by Minch Ritter Voelkers in 2003. It was recognized as the Best Small Library in America in 2005. The library offers a wide selection of books and features a beautiful interior with large windows. Visitors can also access wifi and utilize the space for various activities, such as taking online classes or exams.
Free WiFi, but donations are welcome! Cozy quiet spaces co-sponsored by Gates. It has a sacred vibe

I'm visiting on one of the cruiseships and I visited the library. It has wifi and nice open reading spaces. The guests of the library are quiet and expect the same of you. There is a room for children to read with their parents or guardians. I picked up some used books the library was discarding for a very affordable price. A great library. I really enjoyed my visit. 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟 ✨️🌟🛳 👍

Cool town tucked away in coastal Alaska. Couple of short drives to various hikes and scenery. A little pricey due to it's location but you can find a deal here and there.

Public Library for Wifi, went on a cruise and was taking an online class and had a test one last test to finish and the date was a port day, So I took my laptop with me and made my way to the Public Library and in the back they had tables set up for like a community center. I completed my test using their wifi. The Public Library was very quiet and nice and left them a few dollars for a well supported wifi system that allowed me a connection for taking a final exam of a class even though it was FREE. Although it was alittle slow but there were five or six other people there on their laptop as well, but I was happy to have a stable connection for taking such a test.

They are nice enough to let public use wifi, so if on a cruise and have been out of touch they let dont mind a bit. They had a book sale the day I was there too and found quite a few for my kids!

The Haines, Alaska Visitor Center is a must-visit for explorers, offering free maps for various trails including hiking, historic Fort Seward, and the route to the Yukon. The knowledgeable and friendly staff are eager to share their love for Haines and provide valuable information on popular hikes. Visitors can also get tips on things to do in Haines and beyond.
We were on a cruise and didn't actually stop in the visitor center. We did do a nature excursion of the temperate rain forest. Our guide was a retired forest ranger and very knowledgeable about the area, the critters, the eagles, and definitely about the forest. It was a very nice excursion and we learned so much about the town of Haines, it's history, population, and surrounding forests and waters. Haines was a lovely little town with very nice people.
Lori D — Google review
A very small town. We were on a cruise. It’s best to rent a bike or car from Avis to explore verses an excursion on a cruise ship. The eagle reserves are very close. There are three eagle reserves from 7-20 miles away with no admissions. Biking it makes sense. Bike rental are $49 for two hours and up. It cost 50 percent more for food , basic necessities and health care ! Crime is related to alcohol and bear breaking into cars and homes if the bears are hungry. Coming from Whitehorse, Canada is 250 miles by car. A ferry from Juneau cost $44 one way as a passenger. A vehicle would cost more. A nice place to visit, winters are harsh.
Ed J — Google review

A well done and staff we d visitor center that also had free filtered water available and a seating area so you could take a lod off after walking Haines all day. Plenty of pamphlets, maps, guides, and literature to review and help plan your day out and about. Also had a helpful staff greeting people and ready to provide recommendations. Parking was ample, and there are public restrooms in a well maintained building right next door. Would definitely recommend other communities take a look for an example of how to do a welcome center.

Michael, Kalani and Reba were awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with them. They were so knowledgeable. You could tell they love Haines. Haines may seem like a sleepy town and if you went there and felt like there was not much to do you did it wrong. Come back and talk to these fine folk to get it right and if you still don't discover something new take the fast ferry to Skagway.

Escape the hustle and bustle of Skagway and venture to Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site in Haines for a serene experience. Accessible by a thrilling catamaran ride through stunning fjords, this park offers breathtaking scenery and diverse wildlife. The campground, though dry with vault toilets, provides a picturesque setting right by the beautiful Chilkoot Lake. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the abundance of trouts and dollies while being surrounded by unparalleled natural beauty.
The famous bear watching site and salmon fishing spot. If you see a bear, DONT RUN! Witnessed an older couple disregarded guide’s warning of don’t run and ran, the bear came after them. If the guide didn’t have their bear horn ready, it could be ugly. For them. I would’ve got great photos. Eagles are soaring in the valley, bears are coming in and out of the woods searching for salmons on the creeks, and ravens and magpies are flying around calling each other.

We did a bicycle riding tour from halfway down the Lukat Inlet up to Chilkoot Lake. Honestly, the lake itself, while nice, wasn't the highlight. The highlight was more of the journey along the road. As we cycled we saw the inlet a low tide and later at high tide; a marked difference - boats went from resting on a mud flat to being afloat. We saw a Grizzly/Kodiak feasting at the Weir. We saw eagles and nests in several spots, with a few being fairly close (I do have a decent lens). We also passed several small waterfalls you might not notice if rushing by in a vehicle. The morning fog made for an interesting view of the inlet.
Graham T — Google review
Not much to it, but a lovely place for some solitude if you want it. There is a small boat launch where tour groups from the cruise ships head out from and a small campground. The lake is absolutely beautiful. Beware, there are plenty of bears in the area so don't be stupid.
Daniel N — Google review
Great camp ground. Rustic, spaced out sites. Good pit toilets. And a bear in camp to add some Excitement!!! Beautiful lake. Close to Haines if your getting off the ferry with your camper.
David K — Google review
Was here in May recently on an excursion with the cruise stop at Skagway. It was a canoe safari to see wildlife but not much canoeing as we had a motorised canoe out to the lake. Unfortunately did not see any bear or other wildlife except birds. Overall the excursion was ok although the price was a bit high. We had to take a ferry to and from Skagway and then a small van to Chilkoot lake. The tour guide was informative and there was also some commentary on the ferry ride.
Google L — Google review
What an EPIC lake. Kayaking on this lake was just an experience. Also a very scenic drive to get here. Bathrooms are available! If you cruised like I did to Haines you are not biking or walking here you definitely need to rent a car or purchase an excursion. Saw someone who biked here and they looked about ready to kill over (and mind you that's biking only one way). Regardless, beautiful river and lake along with great opportunities to see salmon and bears!
Gatlin W — Google review
Nice Campsites in forest next to lake. Nearby fish weir. Haines is a beautiful, historic town.

What an amazing campground. We didn’t stay there, but we walked around and found it absolutely gorgeous. Not for everyone. It’s dry camping with vault toilets, right on Chilkoot Lake, which is a very beautiful lake. It may be hard to find. Follow signs to the Lake then hang a left before you get to the Lake. The road is partially gravel to get there.

Beer, fish and chips, and service was exceptional! Best fish and chips we’ve even had and we live in the PNW! We were here for a few hours on a cruise ship stop and had heard about this place. Definitely stop by and give them service, worth it!

Andrew was an outstanding server and hustled with a number of customers all coming in at once. He was friendly and efficient. We came for the halibut and chips and were not disappointed. The batter almost has a cornbread hush puppy like sweetness to it but was Not heavy like a hush puppy. Halibut was very fresh. The chips were average and not noteworthy and the Caesar salad was drowning in dressing so a star off but Andrew took it off our ticket which was appreciated. Would definitely come back again.

The food is good, not great, but good. It has gone downhill over the past few years. Staff was not friendly welcoming or attentive. As Canadians, we felt that the locals were kind of put off by the fact that we were "bothering" them. The whole town felt a bit bothered by the tourists. The furniture has seen way better days, it was not clean and overall, we were happy to eat and get out as quick as possible. Try alpenglow or deer heart, they are a much better experience.

I ordered the burger and it was good! Came with a homemade bun. My husband ordered fish and chips and they were very good. Best part we received our beer for free cause an idiot tourist thought it would be funny to ring the bar bell (free rounds). He tried to get out of it but it was not happening! They told him you shouldn't touch things if you don't know what it means. They were really busy took a while to check out. We'd eat there again!

For day 3, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with Fort William H. Seward, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Extreme Dreams Gallery. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Fort William H. Seward, established in 1904 during the gold rush era, was one of 12 forts built in Alaska to maintain order among gold seekers. It continued to serve as a training center for Alaskan draftees during WWI and WWII. Named after William H. Seward, it is conveniently located near the cruise ship dock and features well-preserved original buildings that now house a B&B, restaurant, and an arts center.
I did the self guided walking tour on a wet and windy afternoon. It is definitely worth the effort to learn about the past in this stunning location.

I visited on Independence Day for a special event. The cannon was shot off, and it was spectacular! The cannon itself was an interesting item to look at. The town had two plaques or signs that detailed some history. The fort and park ate near the cruise terminal, so it would be an easy walk from a ship to visit it.

The Haines Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center is a must-visit on the walking tour of Haines. Located in a picturesque setting overlooking the water, it offers an insightful journey into the history of Haines and the Chilkat Valley. The museum showcases art and artifacts from both past and present residents, including indigenous Tlingkit people and settlers. Visitors can expect to see a diverse range of exhibits, from Chilkat weavings and baskets to a full dugout canoe.
Small museum about the Tlingit and the area they live/lived in. There were a lot of cultural artifacts, like Tlingit art, baskets, and weaving, as well as the history of the Tlingit in the area and the white colonizers/frontiersmen. There was information on the social dynamics of the Tlingit as well, which was really, really interesting. Would recommend visiting if you're in Haines. I believe it's $10 a head and well worth supporting.

This is a museum documenting the native Alaskan history and culture. There are many nice displays.

Wonderfully written exhibit that makes you feel like you are now an insider and can speak with authority. Wall of Chilkat weavings, amazing baskets, and a full dugout canoe! Drawers full of interesting items make it a richer exhibit. I liked the interactives, too.

Portage Cove State Recreation Site

4.7
(15)
State park
Portage Cove State Recreation Site offers stunning views of Haines and Port Chilkoot, with a boardwalk perfect for leisurely strolls and photo opportunities. The beach provides a unique perspective, but caution is advised against scaling the unstable cliff. This quiet area features accessible trails suitable for hikers, as well as picnic spots. Away from tourist crowds, it's an ideal place to enjoy the beautiful temperate rainforest and camping facilities while taking an easy walk along well-maintained trails.
Great little park. Great views of Haines and Port Chilkoot... walk the boardwalk & take some pics. Walk the beach for a unique perspective. Don't scale the cliff, the rock isn't stable enough for sage climbing.
Chris H — Google review
It's a very nice and quiet area. Accessible and easy trails for hikers. Walk along the beach or setup for picnic. Since the place is off the town, you won't see much touristic crowds here.

Battery Point Trailhead

4.5
(13)
Hiking area
Battery Point Trailhead is one of the three main visitor trails at Chilkat State Park, offering a coastal hike through a temperate rainforest with minimal elevation gain. The trail provides access to beautiful sights and leads to a beach where dogs can swim. Additionally, the park features a boat launch for king salmon fishing and wildlife spotting scopes for observing whales, porpoises, and seals.
Great place to hike. Didn’t take any pictures on phone but the pictures added is the road on way to trail as part of the hill washed away taking I hear some houses with it.

A wonderful hike out to the beach and Mt Riley, five mile roundtrip walking from the pier to the trailhead, then to the beach, rt. Some spots are somewhat technical, recommend care and not for those with disabilities. Beautiful rain forest.
M H — Google review
Love this trail. Nice and easy even the two year old could hike to the beach. Not much parking but if you go early it is not a problem. A couple of camp spots at the end too.
Amanda H — Google review
Great moderate hike, whether you stop at Kelgaya point, or hike on to see Battery Point as well. Enjoy walking through one of the few temperate rainforests on a trail with very little elevation gain, and take in beautiful sights from both points. If you choose to continue on to battery point, if you hike (of trail) to the beach side, you will see a navigational bacon on a short tower attached to a giant battery. This is NOT why it's named Battery Point, just a comical coincidence. From battery point, you can see the muddy fresh water from the Katzehin River (from the far side of the Inside Passage, at a place where it is at its narrowest). You can see a clear distinction between the muddy fresh water and the seawater of the Inside Passage.

Art gallery
Located on Portage Street near the Cruise Ship Dock, The Wild Iris is an art shop and smokery with an English-style garden. Visitors can enjoy the view, incredible flowers, fruits, and vegetables while engaging in interesting conversations with Fred, the former Mayor of Haines. The shop features a collection of fine jewelry and Northwest coastal art at reasonable prices. Customers appreciate the friendly and personable owners who make them feel welcome.
Awesome cute place where you can buy nice souvenirs and jewelry 😀 It is so beautiful in summer and spring time ,you feel like don't wanna leave this place

Not being much for Jewelry, and thankfully my partner wasn't either, this was still a charming stop due to the flower displays in the garden outside. We did look inside and there was a decent selection of items to browse.

What a lovely store. Enjoyed chatting with the staff, friendly and knowledgeable and helpful. Selected some beautiful flower note cards to frame for gifts. Store also had lovely jewelry available. Definitely worth stopping in. Flowers outside were beautiful. Nice quaint shop.

So glad we took the time to wander around this little town and head up the hill to stumble on this gallery. Fun selection of local art at very fair and reasonable prices along with personable and fun owners who engaged us in conversation. Value the pieces I bought there. Extreme Dreams Gallery is a charming and captivating art gallery where the artist himself is often present, providing valuable insights into his own work as well as that of other represented artists. This lovely establishment offers original artwork created by Alaska residents, showcasing the artistic talents of its community. With its back deck offering a stunning view and the presence of a glacier adding to its allure, this high-quality gallery ensures an excellent experience for visitors.
Great little shop we stumbled upon by accident. The owner has a nice selection of art from local artists. Some very nice pieces in a wide variety of styles. We purchased a couple glass based items, a zipper pull and a dish for wasabi and one for the sushi. Both had a whale design. Many more items just sorry I didn't take any pictures inside. Outside I found a couple interesting items and a bonus, a loo with a view. Definitely worth a visit.

Old Field Kitchen

Restaurant
Old Field Kitchen is a hidden gem that you absolutely must visit during your trip to Haines. This charming spot offers an inviting atmosphere with a nostalgic vibe, making it perfect for both breakfast and dinner. Diners rave about the menu, which features fresh summer ingredients like sockeye salmon and rockfish, all sourced locally. The meals are crafted with care; one visitor described their salmon as the best fish preparation they’ve experienced in Alaska!
They only open 4 hours for Sunday brunch and 3 hours on Monday dinner. It gives out an old church vibe yet it serves Asian fusion cuisine. Coffee is alright, but the food is good.
HJ M — Google review
Small menu, only 3 mains things listed. Changes daily, check their Facebook page. We had the black pepper tofu bowl and was absolutely delicious! Great little patio and beautiful views of the mountains, would definitely recommend this local gem of a restaurant
Amy S — Google review
The donburi was incredible, husband had chicken, I had tofu. I can’t express how delicious it was. And it would have been worth the long, long, long, long wait, except the sound level was downright assaultive. Their indoor space is all hard surfaces with no acoustic softening whatsoever. I’m confident it exceeds osha levels. I felt like I had been beaten up by the time we left. Sit outside if you can, or get your food to go. Oh my gosh food was good, but yikes what an awful environment…
Leone H — Google review
My first time here and had breakfast. It has a very cool old school vibe. The breakfast was delicious. I will be returning to check out their dinner menu. I think the menu changes as they can source supplies. The menu has just a few options, in keeping with a small pop-up kitchen, but that is part of what makes it great. Just do a few things, but do them well. Highly recommend even after the first visit.
Matt B — Google review
Excellent meal here. They have a rotating menu. We had butter chicken and samosa and challah bread. All so good. They haf brio trains for the kids to play with, so we were able to actually sit back and enjoy a beer. Definitely going to be a regular stop.
Amanda H — Google review
My salmon was cooked to perfection. Hands down the best preparation of fish I’ve had in Alaska. They also kindly provided us with a fish free version of the salmon bowl for the vegetarian in our party. The desert (a shortbread cookie) was full of unexpected flavors and sublime! This was the perfect meal for our last night in Haines.
Sadie H — Google review
My wife and I had the best breakfast of our lives at the Old Field Kitchen. It was a breakfast bowl with egg, kimchi, and bunch of other stuff. It was reasonably priced and prepared really fast. We ate outside as it was a nice, sunny day. I appreciated that they had a water cooler too.
Dave M — Google review
First off our food took an hour to receive, the kitchen must have realized they were running low on the crab arancini. The menu stated we would receive 2 crab arancini with the curry. After purchasing the dish for $24 and waiting an hour our order came out with only 1 crab arancini and no explanation of why or any way to compensate so we basically had a huge bowl of rice for $24. The line to order/ask for any assistance was about 20min to even try.

Restaurant
The Lighthouse Restaurant provided amiable service, albeit slightly sluggish. The cuisine offered was of commendable quality, accompanied by a bar area for beverages and an adjacent pool. The establishment boasted a splendid vantage point, conveniently situated in close proximity to the waterfront. However, the restaurant's interior appeared somewhat worn-out and lacking in ornamentation. One particular server named Tiffany excelled in delivering exceptional service, while the food met expectations with its satisfactory taste and presentation.
We were starving when we stopped by here for a late lunch. It was delicious We enjoyed everything from the seafood chowder to the grilled salmon and salmon tacos. We also ordered some garlic bread. We are in Haines for 3 nights and we will more likely return for another meal. Great spot by the water.

Traveling through Alaska from NY and stopped at this restaurant for dinner. It was great! I had the most delicious macaroni and cheese that I've ever had in my life! Wow! Hubby had the bison burger which was good. He really loved the seafood chowder. Christy was our server and she was wonderful. I highly recommend this place! And do yourself a favor and order the mac and cheese @
Sheryl P — Google review
Christie took very good care of us and was a one woman server, cashier and bar tender. We just made it before she started telling folks there would be a long wait to be seated. David she was at capacity. Maybe half the tables were occupied but she knows her limits and didn’t over extend herself so we got good attention. We got our food very fast and only slight delay taking our order. She thanked us for our patience which is always nice to be acknowledged. Christie hustled and is very experienced. She kept her sense of humor, was efficient but not stressed and friendly with everyone. The bar was closed for some reason and she was also the bartender. Had the halibut and chips and they were fresh but pretty average, thin standard batter with not much flavor so the fish was the star which we like. Grease was minimal. Fries were average and also not greasy. We would definitely return for Christie and the halibut. In my opinion would be better for everyone to have more than one server.
Michele B — Google review
We went out to eat dinner one night at this place and were expecting good fish and food. Right as we entered the restaurant we waited for a waiter to come and give us a table for at least 5 minutes. We had to get our own menus! We finally sat down and noticed how slow everything was. We got water 10 minutes after sitting down and ordered food. We constantly were waiting and wondering where our food was. After 1 hour of dreadful the food finally came. At that point we were not even hungry anymore. To add on to everything the fish that we ordered was cold. We paid so much money and waited so long for cold fish! Unbelievable! Save your self a lot time, happiness and money by avoiding this place
Neel — Google review
On a Tuesday night at 630pm this was one of two restaurants open in town. We were sent to the bar as the restaurant became full. I understand they were busy, and we waited well over an hour for our food which at least was decent. While initially waiting for a table in the restaurant, there was no acknowledgement of the line up waiting and then we were told rather curtly if we didn't have a reservation we couldnt be helped and to go to the bar or wait an hour for a table.
Britt T — Google review
Good service at the bar. Tiffany was a great bartender! Delicious seafood chowder and Alaska beer!
Donna P — Google review
After nine years of exploring different destinations as full-time travelers, we encountered the worst service and food at this place, which was simply unacceptable for a dish as straightforward as fish and chips. Worst part is we were not even given cutlery’s to eat our fish and chips. 35 mins later we were still waiting on it while picking on our food with our fingers. Dine time was around 5:30pm.
KS N — Google review
Mediocre at best. Stood waiting for a table for like 10 minutes (not bad) but wasn't even welcomed or talked to at all prior, just walked right past multiple times until finally someone left and we were seated. Then waited probably 15 minutes to order food and another at least 45 minutes or more to get our food. We only ordered chicken strips with fries and a bowl of mac n cheese. They barely had the windows cracked and it was 70+° outside, so extra hot and stuffy inside, made me feel sick. Don't go if you're in a rush. I watched multiple tables of people walk out and tables not even get attention for 30+ minutes at a time. The waitress was very kind, but it seemed like they were severely understaffed, creating an unwelcoming environment to want to sit and wait that long to eat.
