Caverns & Caves
Mercer Caverns, discovered by a gold prospector in 1885, offers guided tours through its vast limestone caves. The caverns feature stunning crystalline formations like the Angel Wings and delicate aragonite formations, as well as stalactites and stalagmites. Once used by Yokut Indians as a mortuary cave, it was later abandoned until its rediscovery. The guided tours last about 45 minutes and depart every half hour.
This is simply an amazing place. The story on how it was discovered and the history of the Cavern is something out of a fiction novel. I highly recommend this tour. It is such a unique place, well maintained and knowledgeable tour guides make it absolutely worth a visit. It's not a big place, so plan ahead, small parking lot. It is a very enclosed space, so it may not be for some people, but the cavern is literally 1 of a kind. There are some tight spaces and a lot of steep steps, but I am a fairly big guy, and I made it not problem.
Eric C — Google review
Great experience! The guide was a funny girl with energy, and she was making jokes and interacting with people. It's a must go if you're in the area. The tour is about 45 minutes and very entertaining. Good for kids too!
Rosa M — Google review
We visited Mercer Caverns just for the gem assay, and it was a fun kid-friendly activity! You get a bag of mining rough and use a water sluice to pan for treasures. Lots of colorful gems like quartz, amethyst, and obsidian—great for younger kids or anyone new to rockhounding. The staff was helpful and identified some of the better finds. It's not a serious geological experience, but it’s perfect for a quick hands-on souvenir and a little sparkle to take home. Great stop if you’re short on time or skipping the cave tour. 💎 Worth it for families or gem collectors looking for a casual, fun activity.
Sarah B — Google review
If you're in Calaveras County CA you've got to try and make the Mercer Caverns. We arrived on a Sunday, Aug 31st around 12:30pm and were put on the 3pm guided tour (no more than 15 people each). To burn 2 hours we went into Murphy's and had lunch at the Watering hole, which we highly recommend. Coming back, we went into the caverns. Wow. Stalagtites, stalagmites and so much more! Guide was exceptionally informative about history, pointing out all the cave formations, and clever funny too! Gave him a nice tip at the end. The cave is over 450 steps down with multiple stops along the way to admire features. Wife and I were really happy to have done this. It was the highlight of our day!
Randall M — Google review
Worth visiting if you are in Murphy’s, located a few miles outside of town. Well run and maintained, friendly staff and a great tour guide. Typical cavern tour - lots of really steep stairs, some narrow passages, have to watch you head in a few places, but the stairs are sturdy with hand rails all along the way. Some interesting features to see - the aragonite crystals were unique, and some nice closeups of “cave bacon”. Loved Zoltar in the gift shop. Only complaint is not being allowed to use a GoPro camera - some guy came out and told me video cameras were not allowed. I asked why. “Cause that’s the rule”. Kind of rude, and a silly rule since all phones take video, and the DSLR camera I did use take high resolution video. The GoPro was small and attached to my body with a harness. I’d like to know the reasoning, given that I used it at Moaning Caverns the week before.
Rich B — Google review
they say it's cold down there, but it was rather refreshing due to it being 98 outside. our guide Serena was amazing. very patient with our kids.
Jason B — Google review
Loved the staff, the gift shop was perfect now over stuffed with irrelevant merch to sell. The views of the caverns we amazing. Out of my family of 5 I struggled at the end with my breathing coming up and out, but I am a bit overweight. The lack of water with such little air is what got me so if you are over weight, asmatic or claustrophobic go in and have a great experience but know these things will trigger. Im looking forward to going back after loosing a little weight bringing my inhaler. Buy tickets on site may have to wait a little bit for the next tour they say how cold it is down there but with the constant moving you stay warm I got hot when we reached the bottom. I loved hearing all the history.
Corinna H — Google review
It was a great tour. The guide did a wonderful job pointing out the significant areas of the cavern, including the geology and history. Be ready for lots of stairs.

Wineries & Vineyards
The Hovey Winery Tasting Room, housed in the historic 1850 Albert Michelson House on Murphys' Main Street, is a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts. Founded by Chuck Hovey in 1983, the winery has garnered over 500 medals at prestigious competitions. Visitors can savor tasting flights or enjoy wines by the glass indoors, on the patio, or at picnic tables on the lawn.
Hovey is the best! I started coming here a few years ago when I moved to California and the staff here have always been incredibly kind and made me, my family and my friends feel welcome. Not to mention that the wine is delicious and the lawn can’t be beat. One of the most tranquil spots to grab a drink in Murphys - I’d highly recommend to any visitor.
Seth N — Google review
Irish festival- I was sitting at a table and a man brought me a menu over while I was eating. He asked me if he could get me anything and I told him my husband was getting us beer. He said we don’t serve that but you can still sit here and eat. I said well he’ll figure it out. A few minutes passed and he came back and grabbed the menu and my food and escorted me to a different area that was apparently for Pour, the Tap Room only. I told him that it was inappropriate for him to touch my food and he could’ve asked politely to move to the other area. Moments later, a young blonde employee approached asking me where I was from and then stated she hopes that I never return to Murphy’s. Well I frequent Murphy’s often since we own a cabin in Arnold. I can assure you, I’d never give this establishment my business. They have a nice area but the employees have zero tact and are incredibly RUDE!!! I’ve worked in the food and wine industries. I’m perfectly aware that this is uncalled for an all accounts. You don’t talk to people in this manner. Disgusting.
Janelle B — Google review
We stopped into Hovey Winery for our second tasting of the day, so we were already feeling a little tipsy, but the experience was absolutely fantastic! The employee who helped us was wonderful: friendly, knowledgeable, and made us feel right at home. Every wine we tried was great, balanced, and flavorful. A perfect stop if you’re looking for a welcoming vibe and consistently delicious wines! Oh and their candles smelled great.

This winery is amazing. I am a wine club member and Hovey has the best wine in town. The outdoor setting is also amazing. You can sit in the grass area and enjoy the beauty of Murphys! And the friendly service tops it all off! If you come to Murphys, make sure you stop by Hovey; the wine, setting and service is top notch!

Really great experience! A must do in Murphy’s. Please go see Sally as the knowledge and guidance is second to none!

Our first visit to Murphys and Hovey was in 2014 and we had no idea that wineries existed in the area. What a surprise! We have been back 4 times since, take friends with us every time and ALWAYS stop at Hovey. The wines are great, the atmosphere is relaxing and the staff always makes time for you. Laura and Rick are especially great people. The wine club has several levels of participation and the wine selections are excellent. While no longer available, the 2014 Zinfandel is the finest wine I have tasted. The 2015 is not far behind. Their Tempranillos are awesome as well. We enjoy their Wine at Five presentation on Facebook every Friday. They present very good information. We will definitely visit every time in Murphys

The team at Hovey was great to work with. So accommodating and helpful for us to put on our family reunion for 50 people. Definitely will be back!

Hovey is our favorite spot in Murphys! We drive all the way from SF just to enjoy a glass in the beautiful yard, no matter the season. Everyone who works here is so kind. A few folks in our friend group are now members, and we hope to keep coming back for years to come.

Sue is AWESOME. Nothing snooty here. She is SUPER. Just good wine and as much history of their products as anyone wants. The names of each wine have that personal touch that you just don't get at other wineries. There's a difference here at their taking room. It's homey, special, and as a customer you feel like you are having a laid back time with friends instead of feeling like you need to be stuffy to keep up with them. Highly recommend and definitely get the "animal crackers"! Will return next time we are in town! Oh and ask about The Deceiver and take the challenge of what type of wine it is! Fun time!

Loved the experience at Gossamer Cellars, Sue and Gary are gracious hosts and know their wine. Enjoyed a selection of reds and whites over a lively, spirited conversation with Sue and the best part, they are open after 5pm. Highly recommend a visit here on your trip to Murphys.

This was probably the most fun tasting experience I’ve ever had. Best of luck to the owner on making every varietal! Tonight I had the 2020 Damo (graciano) with the NYT duck and cherry sauce recipe. Wow. Couldn’t ask for a better pairing! The wines punch above their price class!

Great Vibes! Just the spot I needed after dealing with a lousy CPA! 🍷

Fabulous wines, fabulous owners, and fabulous prices! We spent about 3 hours here while trying out about 20 wines. The two owners, Gary Grant and Sue, are great to talk to, plus a lot of the 30 or so of us -- at times -- who were customers were also gregarious. The vintner intends to try to make a wine from every grape on a chart of all of them -- see the attached pix for the little X's indicating how many he's already made! We will certainly be back!
L M — Google review
Patrick at Milliaire Winery recommended that this be my second stop during my day trip to Murphys. Gossamer is such a cute little spot with hundreds of photos of past customers all over the walls and ceilings. I was served by Jim during my visit, and had such a pleasant conversation with him and his sister who happened to have stopped by. The Isabella wine was SO good and SO refreshing on the warm day, I just had to buy a bottle! Jim also walked me though several of the red wines which were very easy on the palate (I'm not a big red drinker, but the lower tannins made it very easy to drink these wines). Thank you, Jim, for the awesome visit!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What an incredible experience at Gossamer Cellars in Murphy, California! From the moment we arrived, Sue, the wife of the winemaker, made us feel like part of their family with her warm hospitality and extensive knowledge of their wines. We spent a delightful three hours tasting 18 out of their 21 offerings, and each wine was a unique and delicious journey. The service was exceptional, with Sue ensuring that every detail was perfect throughout our visit. The atmosphere was relaxed, and we never felt rushed, allowing us to fully savor the depth and variety of their wines. Their hospitality truly made us feel at home, and it’s clear that they take great pride in making every guest's experience special. I cannot recommend this wine tasting enough for anyone looking to enjoy some truly outstanding wines in a beautiful setting. This is a must-visit for wine lovers!

Located in downtown, The Spice Tin is a must-visit for foodies and cooking enthusiasts. This shop offers gourmet spices, unique sugars, locally made sauces, and handcrafted dressings that are not commonly found elsewhere. The welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff make the experience even more enjoyable. Additionally, visitors can find recipe ideas on their website to inspire their culinary creations. The variety of aromas inside the store creates an exciting experience for those who love to cook creatively.
Always a fun experience. Their collection of spices, rubs, jams, hot sauce, and more are very eclectic. The aesthetic of the store is beautiful. Staff are more than welcoming. You can pay with Apple Pay and other major tenders. A must visit when in Murphys.
Jessica S — Google review
This was an interesting place. Unfortunately, when my husband went to pay, he was treated horribly. He said the woman treated him like he was less than. When I told my daughter, she mentioned the same thing happened to her as she was paying. She also said that the woman behind the counter was talking about the customers in the store. If I had known this, I would not have bought anything from this store. My husband and children are Hispanic. I asked if my son in law had the same experience and he said it did not happen to him. Of course, he looks white. Not okay and I will never go back to this store.

Honestly a must. Right off the main road. HUGE variety of spices and all made in house. Definitely worth stopping in and getting some food stuff! They have BBQ rubs, tea, imported spices, literally everything! And local honey!

OMG, So Great we returned twice in 2 days. The scents and flavors; topped only by the knowledge, helpfulness and kindness of the staff, one of which may have been the owner. They also acted as “tour guides” to various other local shops and restaurants.

I love this place. All my spices come from here as do bottles and labels. I particularly like middle eastern spice mixes. They have such a huge variety of spices. I love both the different kinds of curry and all the middle eastern spices and spice mixes.

Nestled in the heart of the town, Murphys Community Park is a charming destination offering a serene escape. The park features a picturesque creek where kids and dogs frolic during the summer months. Visitors can enjoy ample picnic tables, barbecues, and a spacious playground area with various amenities for children. Shaded by large trees, it's an ideal spot to unwind and relax. Additionally, the park hosts events and concerts at its gazebo.
It's a very nice park. Though it's small but it is built for everyone which means that people of all ages can enjoy it. I really liked the walking story book and I'm so jealous of the people of Murphy that they get to go to the beautiful library overlooking the park. If you have time and have kids definitely stop by this park, I'm sure you will enjoy it

Great place to bring your family and cool off for the summer! I loved how the park had so much to offer, and there was a lot of tables for family. The area was kept clean and the stream was not harsh. I definitely recommend this place. You can bring your own food and chairs. It's great to see everyone sharing the space! Parking is across and around.

A really beautiful park in the heart of Murphy's. There are picnic areas and plenty of parking. Nestled along Angels Creek and near restaurants. We come here sometimes just to cool off and let the kids take a dip on those hot days. The state of California also stocks the creek occasionally with rainbow trout and fishing is an option. It's more of a kids swim hole though so suggest if your coming just to fish it may be full of kids swimming lol. There is access and parking from both sides of the bridge.

This Is definitely one of the best things about this community, it is everyone’s favorite place. It is beautiful during every season, love to see children splashing around in the creek in the summer heat. The newly installed story walk is a fun activity to do with the family. Also visit the local library across the bridge if you catch it during business hours, they have a used books sale area for visitors.

Murphys Pourhouse is a warm and friendly bar located at 350 Main Street, offering a versatile menu and a lively atmosphere. With 16 taps serving various beers, from pale ales to stouts, it's the perfect spot for casual dining with refreshing brews and classic pub food. The beer garden provides a beautiful setting to enjoy good company, while the outstanding service adds to the experience.
This is a super fun place. The employees are all great, the food is phenomenal, and the beer is fantastic. There is something for everyone here, whether foodie or beer snob. Even if you don't eat food or drink beverages, you'll enjoy good conversation. If you don't like any of these things, it may be possible that you'll be unhappy here.

Wide selection of beers & original delicious sandwiches. Fantastic gluten free bread as option for sandwiches! A bit tricky to find: located behind the wine bar. Cheerful seating area.

Stopped by on the way up to Arnold last weekend. Cozy spot on main strip in Murphys. Staff was friendly and inviting. Sandwiches were solid. Beer was great for being up in the foothills. They also have cold beer/cider to take away. Hits were the Reuben and the grilled cheese. Local cider we got to-go was great. Grab a 4-pack mix and get 20% off! Staff can give you great suggestion based off your likes.

Best beer selection in the area. Love the outdoors picnic tables. Sandwiches are tasty, would love a bit more heft in that Reuben. But overall we stop here every time we come through.

Super chill beer place. #4 west coast IPA is absolutely delicious. So smooth and perfect balance of all flavors. The yard has artificial grass but nonetheless is still really relaxing.

The Pour house is a wonderful place to sit outside at a picnic table and enjoy a gentle breeze come through on a hot day. The food is mediocre. The garden wrap is not recommended. I found the tortilla a little thicker than usual and soggy with the generous portion of dressing. The contents of the wrap were a bit thin for my preference. I always prefer this type of veggie option on bread over a wrap. The cancer strong sandwich had a generous portion of bacon that was undercooked and Best enjoyed by our dog. We won’t come back unless it’s just for drinks and outdoor ambience.
Dan L — Google review
Seating can seem limited when you arrive on a Thursday at 5:30pm. All tables were claimed but somehow got lucky after we ordered our beer. Plenty of delicious brews to try from! I noticed a lot of parents brought kiddos snacks while they enjoyed their beverages. There is a water tap near the door and it is short enough for a 6 year old child to reach and serve oneself. A lot cool merch and amazing people ready to serve you some cold delicious brew! Do yourself a favor and stop by! Kids run and played with other kids. They also have corn hole and is quite entertaining when all the kids get excited when playing.

Murphys Irish Pub is a new addition to the charming town of Murphys, offering an authentic Irish pub experience. The pub promises live music, a vibrant atmosphere, and a diverse menu featuring classic Irish fare. Visitors can expect warm hospitality and an extensive selection of drinks.
Stopped in around 4:00 on Friday and had no problem getting seated. The food was great and service was friendly. I got the small salad which was a generous size with a delicious dressing, feta cheese and plenty of fresh veggies. The Irish nachos with corned beef were a treat as well. I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area.

Great food, a bunch of fruity beers if you’re into that. Very weird service on holiday weekends. Not sure why I can’t order food inside your establishment… but I also can’t go 10 feet outside your door with my beer to order your food? Weird setup but the food was good for corned beef tacos. To reiterate: food was good for corned beef tacos.

A perfect pub. Live music, lively service, and nachos. We came in for our second stop in Murphy's. They had all the drink info on the wall, a nice big food menu, and plenty of seating. The bartender who's name maybe Nick? Made us feel right at home. He was a step ahead of our needs the whole time as we sat at the bar and took over for an hour. We laughed and enjoyed ourselves immensely. I would consider that first class service. Ritz level, deep into Calaveras. Will be back for a stouty pint.

Excited for the new owners and their opportunity of managing this staple of a bakery in Murphys. Living nearby we come by frequently. The one critique I’d like to offer is that nearly every croissant, scone and roll we’ve had since the new management took over is underbaked by at least 5 minutes. The flavors are good and their other improvements over the last year are showing!

We visited this location on a Monday morning around 9 am. The staff was very friendly. I have been looking forward to coming to this bakery for months. I was looking to buy breakfast as well as a giant box of everything to bring home to my family several hours away. When we walked in the store had very few items and no breakfast sandwiches available that day. To say we were disappointed was an understatement. We left and had breakfast down the street and came back a few hours later hoping they would have more of a selection. To my surprise still virtually empty. We got a pumpkin chai to still support the small business. It tasted like water I tossed it in the outside garbage. The place has potential especially with all the social media hyping up Arnold and Murphy’s right now.

A bit of a wait/line during the weekend morning crunch (standard). The pumpkin muffin, spinach & egg pastry, and ham & cheese croissant are all very good. The laminated dough isn't particularly flaky or buttery, so some of the sweet pastries don't pass muster (skip the sweet croissants and bear claws). However, for that same reason, the savory pastries are quite good and "sandwich-like." The price is right, the pastries are large, and the service is great.

I am new to the area my first time here and Aria is a Very friendly atmosphere. Drinks poured right and tasty. Spinach dip was very good. The owners are super cool ! The Bar maids are thee bomb! And the choice of music was on point.

Worst service ever! After I ordered I asked for the pastries to be cut in half and after an eye roll she served me the pastries and informed me to let her know before I pay because there is a split charge! A split charge to cut a cookie in half! I ordered 4 pastries one of which was the wrong pastry and the other had a full hair Cooked inside it! I went later that day to return the tainted pastry but they were already closed! I give this place two stars because the baked goods were rather good but the service was horrible! I have posted pictures of the pastry with the hair in it. It's very hard to see but it is there! You could actually hold the pastry up by the hair!

Sushi restaurant
Doke Sushi, located in Murphy, may be far from the Pacific Coast, but it doesn't compromise on serving some of the freshest sushi in the state. The Japanese sushi bar is known for its bold flavors and unique creations made with fresh ingredients. Guests can ask the chefs to choose their dishes and are recommended not to miss out on the incredible appetizers. Despite being a small space that gets crowded quickly, Doke Sushi offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Food was incredible, and a very friendly staff! However, like almost any restaurant these days, it seemed to be operating in the absence of any support staff or manager, either of which would have allowed for expedited service, shorter wait times and more turns of a table. I hope my visit was just a fluke, (pun intended) and maybe someone just called in sick that day. Either way, a good manager would have picked up the slack. Our server was incredible, and handled the shortage with grace.

They recommend reservations but the hostess seated us in ten minutes without them on Valentine’s Day. Several vegan options on the menu. They said the miso soup had fish, but there were three sushi rolls that were vegan. The surprise dish for me was the yellow curry. It was really delicious. And when I ordered it with the veggies the waitress offered that they could add tofu and the tofu was really tasty.

Some of the BEST sushi ever! The owner lived in Japan 18 yrs learning his craft and the cusine. What a pleasure it'll leave you thinking about it when your gone! We will try to get there at least twice a year! I live in the Bay!

Long overdue 5 star review, as we’ve been eating here for a few years now and have only had great experiences. As a self-appointed sushi snob, I can tell pretty quickly and within the first bite whether it’s quality sushi, or better served in a mall’s food court - and this place passes that test and then some! Fresh ingredients, amazing flavors, great ambiance, killer music, and friendly staff. What more could you ask for? Sure they book up pretty quickly and can be a little stringent on timing, but if you’ve eaten anywhere else at the caliber of this place, it’s to be expected to a certain degree. Doke is by far the best sushi within a 50 mile radius, and I’d put it on par with some of the best sushi I’ve ever had - and that includes amazing restaurants along the coast, Bay Area, Hawaii, etc. Do yourself a favor and stop by Doke next time you’re in the area. I assure you, you won’t be disappointed!

Modern sushi and Japanese cuisine with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Wow. What a cool little spot. We came in right as they opened for their dinner hours and were lucky enough to catch a table. It seems like it is not a bag idea to have a reservation, at least on a weekend, because they were busy from the moment they opened. It is a very small space, so it gets crowded fast, and we can tell why. The food was excellent. The whole experience was top notch. The laid back music on low in the background and the busy atmosphere gave it a real homie feel. Our server, Matt, was on his game and extremely friendly. He had a great feel for the crowd and was right there as soon as we even thought of a want or desire. I never believed in psychics before, but now I'm questioning things. Price wise, it was definitely fair for the community it is in and what you expect from a typical sushi establishment. Then you eat the food and realize it is more than fair, it's a deal. The quality of the items on the plate and the skill at which they are prepared are very high end, but the price tag is not. I look forward to dining here again.

Hands down the best sushi in the entire area, maybe all of west coast. The owner/ Executive Chef was trained in Osaka/Koga Japan, and he brought his experience with him. Everything on the menu is to die for, and the Poke crisps will make you transcend into the heavens them selves. The sushi is immaculate, plating spot on, atmosphere is perfect. You owe it to yourself to eat here at least once in your life!

Marvelous sushi gem in gold country. Top notch food, we visit everytime we're in Murphy's. Spend the extra to get dungeness crab over crab salad, 10/10.
