Chinle in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Chinle, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Chinle is the main gateway to Canyon de Chelly National Monument, where towering sandstone walls, ancient cliff dwellings, and working Navajo farms share the same dramatic landscape. From here you can join authorized Navajo guides for jeep or horseback tours into the canyon, offering access beyond the rim overlooks. The town also provides practical visitor services—lodging, food, and fuel—making it a convenient base for exploring the monument and the wider Navajo Nation.
With favorites like White House Overlook, Canyon de Chelly National Monument Welcome Center, and Thunderbird Lodge, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Thunderbird Lodge so you can get the best taste of Chinle while you’re here. Canyon de Chelly National Monument, located on the Navajo Nation, is a vast park preserving archaeological resources spanning over 5,000 years of human occupation. Visitors can take tours and enjoy overlooks of ruins and the famous Spider Rock spire. The area is home to Navajo families who engage in livestock raising and farming within the canyons. While exploring the monument, visitors can drive through two scenic routes with multiple pullouts, some of which are wheelchair accessible.
This place is beautiful! We took the bear trail hike, and our guide was awesome! Very knowledgeable and kept us at a good pace. I recommend "Richard!" He was awesome!! Thank You!!

Until this week I didn't even know this National Treasure existed. Needed a place to stay, wanted something new and different so here I am. The first thing that struck me is the absolute friendliness and wonderful Navajo people I've met. Each and every person has been a wonderful host and perfect example of what Americans should be. The Canyon is breathtaking and worth visiting. Yesterday evening we stopped at all the south overlooks, today we went to the north side overlooks. Each and every stop was a treat for this traveling beardedrvtech. I hope my photos do shine justice to the Canyon. This morning I booked a jeep tour with Beauty Way Jeep tours. Our guide Arianna was knowledgeable, sincere and willing to answer our questions. He family owns the property in front of Antelope ruins. We actually had fry bread right where he ancestors act 100s of years ago. I highly recommend you give Canyon de Chelly a visit.

Visited this park as part of a northern Arizona tour my husband and I decided to take. We absolutely loved it! The White House Trail was open, and while challenging, it was completely worth it. Each of the overlooks had a unique view. I saw a few reviews complaining about "panhandlers" at the overlooks, but honestly, everyone was extremely polite, willing to share the local history and their personal stories, and definitely NOT pushy in any way. I felt it added to the experience where I was definitely a visitor in their land. We visited at the end of September, the weather was perfect and the park was not crowded. I differently recommend!
Emily G — Google review
Friendly staff at the visitor center. I recommend driving the saw rim all the way to the end to the vista point then stopping at all view points on the way back. Beautiful views, especially in late afternoon with the sun to the west. It’s also free.
Thierry S — Google review
A cultural treasure. The local guides add to the richness of this incredible place. An overnight stay is well worth the time.
Charles G — Google review
Wow. Super quiet all along the canyon rim. Not crowded in early May, but still a bit of a chilly wind. Spectacular views at pull offs with decent parking situation.
Garret M — Google review
Unbelievably beautiful! Definitely worth exploring but keep a close eye on small children and pets- extremely high cliffs and no barricades in most areas. High winds possible- we froze to death while visiting here in March- dress accordingly.

One of the most beautiful places I visited while working in the Navajo Nation and touring the southwest USA. Highly recommend doing a Native-led tour IN the canyon, which I ran out of time to do.

Awesome place, amazing views. Some have a good trail, which you can get to a special vista point and are able to take really nice pictures. A must-see, you can definitely make out the sediment layers with different colors and densities. Some are eroding away a bit gate than others, which makes the sediments really stand out and look amazing. Very windy, and the local animals are amazing, hard to spot at times, but they are out here.
Evaristo M — Google review
Absolutely worth your investment to make this stop. The short access walk is not difficult and there are hand railings. There is wheelchair access to one of the overlooks. Here there are stunning views of the upper canyon and one major prehistoric site. This upper canyon is the location of the steepest sides (many about 1000 ft. in height. I have no photos better than those already posted. If you are leaving the Chinle area and visiting the North canyon overlooks, I strongly recommend that you travel north to Lukchukai and then take Navajo Rt. 13 northeast toward Red Valley. The right turn is not well marked. Rt. 13 will eventually take you toward Shiprock NM over the most beautiful road imaginable. It leads through huge sandstone rocks up, up into a high elevation forest and then down past the famous Shiprock peak.
George W — Google review
Pictures don’t do this justice, of course, but a “tiny” empire in a canyon? Are you joking? Take a day, pack a picnic and drive through this park. It’s astounding!

Large caves appear to have had some significant structures over time. On the cliff in a beautiful valley with sandstone carved by wind and water. Very peaceful setting.

One of the best ruins viewpoints in all of Canyon de Chelly. The Mummy Cave ruins are pretty extensive and well worth a look.

Tséyi' Diné Heritage Area - Cottonwood Campground at Canyon De Chelly

4.0
(133)
Campground
Tséyi' Diné Heritage Area - Cottonwood Campground at Canyon De Chelly offers a first-come, first-served camping experience with no hookups or showers. Guided tours allow camping in the canyon on private land through a partnership with a Navajo tribal member. The campground is conveniently located near the visitor center and Thunderbird Lodge facilities. Clean bathrooms, well-maintained amenities, and friendly campers make for a peaceful and enjoyable stay.
Nice campground just outside Canyon De Chelly. Plenty of trees for shade on most camp sites. No hook ups but $20 a night. Bathrooms are mostly clean, they could use a little extra effort. The lodge has a cafeteria next door with fairly decent food at a fair price. There is a dump station and a water fill. There is also a few spigots sprinkled around the camp site for filling water jugs. There is some road noise because the park roads also service the reservation and the roads are fairly close by.
Austin B — Google review
Friendly, welcoming staff, plenty of sites available. Cash only, $20/night, free RV dump. Dry camping, water available, but beware it is murky and smells of bleach. We did not go in restrooms, but they are available. No showers. Generators welcome, but not after 8:30p. Our stay was just okay. One of our neighbors turned on their industrial generator around 9pm, and ran it for several hours. Obviously the camp host wasn't around to enforce the rules. We had two random off-leash dogs come into our site and poop. Trash was scattered around our site. The picnic table and barbecue need some love. Overall, a decent overnight spot.

Great to find a campground in this area. Good location. Was almost completely empty. Bathrooms are closed -ports potties in front of them. No water available. Overrun with ants. Can’t use picnic tables and they bite dog’s feet. $20 cash. Plenty of sites in the shade. Not terrible, but glad it is only one night. No camp host on site. I would not leave camper here unattended right now. Looks like it used to be really nice- it even has an amphitheater!
R L — Google review
This is a great campground for overnight! I called before we headed there to see if they had pull-thru’s available and everyone was very kind on the phone. First come first serve so no guarantees, but we got one! Quiet, clean and we felt safe. We would definitely recommend this place!
Susan K — Google review
Perfect location to visit the Canyon De Chelly. Larged spaced out graveled sites, roadway paved. Very quiet, safe, grounds clean. No issue with finding spot for 38 Class A with tow. 2025 $20 night.
June G — Google review
Perfect for visiting Canyon de Chelly. Nice gift shop near lodge. Sites were private enough for a night’s stay. Tons of goatheads in the soles of your shoes and dogs feet. Overall the only real place to camp with paved roads.
Garret M — Google review
We camped 3 nights in site #35 in our 30'TT in late April 2025. The staff were all welcoming, friendly, and busy taking care of the campground. The campground was about 15%-20% occupied. The middle loop has lots of mature cottonwood trees, which were just starting to sprout leaves. The other 2 loops have some trees, and some full sun sites. We found the campground to be remarkably quiet, well maintained, and with clean bathrooms with flush toilets. There was evidence that horses visit the area. There were two stray dogs who had a well-developed begging routine. They would go from campsite to campsite, looking for handouts. They were not pushy or aggressive about it. Our dogs are dog-reactive, so we made sure to keep our distance on walks. We had no conflict. There are goat heads in the campground. They are annoying, but easy enough to remove from paws and shoes (unlike sand burrs). We would consider staying here again. It's very convenient to Canyon de Chelly. We also visited Hubbell Trading Post and Window Rock.
Jo H — Google review
Lovely campground. Only $20 (cash) per night. No hookups. Lots of trees. Close to the Canyon de Chelly National Monument Visitors Center. In February so only one of three circles were open but no problem finding a site.

Hiking Trails
I've been in the Navajo Nation not quite 5 years. This was the only overview I had not visited. It finally opened near the first of September. The views were amazing. The trail down to the floor of the canyon was amazing. It's fairly safe, but care needs to be taken with younger children. Rest areas are frequent, but no water is available. Being your camera, photo opportunities abound truly great overview that I am glad I finally got to see
PHIL S — Google review
I had a beautiful hike down to White House Ruins. Stunning views and scenery. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. It is a rugged trail. You descend 600 feet and climb back out.
Stewart C — Google review
I can’t find out why this overlook is closed. The visitors center staff told me that the site needs repair but the site is in excellent condition (strange). In the past, it was the only trail that allowed visitors to enter the canyon without a guide. Currently (March ‘22 ) no one can enter canyon without a guide. Maybe closing this “Overlook” was a plan to employ more guides? DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING VALUABLE IN YOUR CAR AT ANY OVERLOOK, lots of theft from vehicles.
Freeman B — Google review
This overlook has a great view of the major prehistoric ruins in the National Monument. Be sure to visit this overlook (although all the overlooks are great). An evening visit is cooler and the angling shadows are intriguing. There is a public access trail (the only one) down to the canyon floor from this overlook. It's 1 and 1/2 miles, a short hike down but a long hike back up. I suspect it's a challenge on a hot day - we didn't try it). In talking with an older Navajo lady selling souvenirs down in the canyon, I learned that she hiked this trail every day. Something to consider when deciding whether or not to purchase one of her small pots.
George W — Google review
The only trail allowed down into the canyon and its worth the hike. Very beautiful. We did it in the morning around 9 am and it got hot on the way up so Id recommend to go early. Took about 2 hours for hike and seeing the ruins. 500-600 foot descent with nice gradual switchbacks. Also has benches along the way if you need a rest. Bring water. There is none there but there are portapotties at the ruin. One confusing point is at the bottom you follow the canyon road west. If you start going east you will see a sign saying you can go no further without a guide. Just go the other way.
Jason P — Google review
If possible, do the trail down to the ruins. It is a nice grade and a marvel of small scale human engineering. You pass through two tunnels to descend to the bottom. The valley floor is amazing. The ruins are spectacular up close.
Matheson H — Google review
Such an awesome hike down the canyon. The sign is pretty accurate for how long it takes to do. The views are immaculate. If you decide to go in the summer like we did, make sure you pack at least half a gallon of water per person.
Samuel O — Google review
Great views from the overlook. There's clearly marked trail here to get down to the ruins. I believe this is the only trail you can take on your own, without a guide, you're on Navajo land here. Always take plenty of water with you.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument Welcome Center

Visitor center
The Canyon de Chelly National Monument Welcome Center is the perfect starting point for your adventure. The park offers two rim drives with nine overlooks, providing breathtaking views of the canyons. While the White House Overlook and Trail are currently closed, private companies offer canyon tours for a more immersive experience. Visitors can also enjoy horse rentals and purchase authentic Navajo jewelry from local artisans at various viewpoints.
Visiting this National Monument was on my "bucket list" and I was not disappointed. The canyon itself is almost overwhelming. The best, and almost only, way to access the inner canyon is with a Navajo guided tour. You can arrange for the tour through the Thunderbird Lodge, and there are other tours as well. A shorter, and less expensive, tour will probably meet most people's goals Probably a good idea to arrive the evening before and visit the south rim view sites that first evening. It's a combination of rim views and seeing it from below that provides a full picture. The height of the shear canyon walls, some over 1000 ft, is difficult to comprehend. A photo does not do it justice, but the famous photographer Edward Curtis came close (search his name and Canyon de Chelly to see what I mean). Besides the geology, the cultural history of this site is amazing. The visitors center tells a large part of the story and, if you visit the inner canyon, your Navajo guide will give you details and show you the major archaeological sites. And culture is alive today here. The canyon is part of the Navajo Reservation and some families have leases in the canyon itself. And, nearly every local you meet will be Navajo. They love their homeland and are happy when others (we tourists) express an interest. Just say 'hi' and start talking. There is one trail by which one can access a portion of the inner canyon without a guide. From the south rim White House overlook a 1 and 1/2 mile trail leads down into the canyon. One of the local Navajo ladies hikes it down and back nearly every day so, if she can do perhaps you can, too.
George W — Google review
A good time exploring and seeing some dwellings. A lot of information and videos to see at the visitors center. The staff was super helpful with which routes to take to see all the sights within a given time frame.
Matt H — Google review
Friendly staff at the visitor center. I suggest driving the south rim first all the way to the end to the vista point then stopping at all the viewing areas on the way back. Stunning views. It’s also free.
Thierry S — Google review
This place is a hidden gem 💎 booked a last minute tour and was fascinating. Our guide Mr.T Spencer was as cool as they come! Highly recommend the 4/6 tour. You can stay at the lodge or the holiday inn which is only 3 minutes away.

One of my favorite canyons in the USA. Afternoon south rim and morning north rim with our own car. Tours and hiking only with native guides

Went with a private group with jeeps that turned out to be a Indian guide that was very informative and took extra time explaining about the canyon.

A most unique place as the Navajo continue to live in and around the canyon making for a unique experience of culture, beauty, history and spirituality.

Nestled in the heart of Chinle, Thunderbird Lodge offers a traditional Navajo-owned lodging experience with comfortable rooms and a regional restaurant. Situated within Canyon De Chelly National Monument, this hotel provides easy access to nearby attractions such as Hatathali Museum and White House Overlook and Trail. Guests can take advantage of amenities like complimentary Wi-Fi, tour assistance, and a business center. The on-site Thunderbird Cafeteria serves satisfying meals, while the gift shop offers unique finds.
I Wholeheartedly recommend both the lodge and their canyon tour. The lodge is a happy and peaceful place, the rooms have everything you need, and the cafeteria, a locals’ favorite, serves the best frybread! But nothing could have prepared us to the stunning beauty of the canyon. We took the 3 pm tour and spent 4 magical hours on the bottom of the canyon, admiring the old Anasazi houses, the gorgeous petroglyphs, the bright green vegetation that grows out of the red rocks, and we learned about the history of the Navajo people, who fought so hard to come back to their ancestors’land and who, despite all efforts to erase them, are now a vibrant community that treasure their heritage and have so much to teach the world about how to respect our environment. Thank you David, our wonderful guide, and thank you to all the lovely Thunderbird staff, this visit was the highlight of our vacation.
S M — Google review
Great to know that the Navajo Tribe operates such a pleasing facility in such an important location (on the edge of a National Monument). Rooms located in a shady cottonwood grove. Room was nice, basic. Had all the needed essentials. Associated cafeteria just O.K. We ate in town the second night. You can arrange for trips into Canyon de Chelly with a Navajo guide. This is the only way to really experience this deep canyon. Trips are 4 or 6 hours, and the shorter is probably enough for most folks. Before or after take the drive along the south rim. This is a great after dinner activity. It's cooler and the evening shadows give you a different perspective.
George W — Google review
Older building but kept up & clean. Also in quiet area. Cafeteria style restaurant but ate only breakfast as gone during day sightseeing. Guided tours into canyon were amazing & the Navajo guide Fernando was very thorough explaing his culture, plus he was also fun!! Really great experience!! Everyone needs to go & get educated on there history.

Thunderbird Lodge is great! Check-in/checkout was easy, the room was clean and comfortable. I loved the cafeteria onsite! I enjoyed the blue corn pancakes, breakfast burrito and soup! I had both the fry bread and tortilla too. We also did the canyon 4 hour drive tour. Elkton was our guide and he was amazing. He is Diné and you can tell through his stories how passionate he is about his culture and keeping the traditions alive. If you are about to request someone, make sure it is ELKTON!

Loved it, however look out for room 8 - it smells because the toilet is not secured. I was disappointed that we were assigned room 8 when they’ve known for months that it smelled. Fortunately, I was reassigned to another, better room once I complained. The canyon tours are amazing.we enjoyed the Navajo tacos and blue corn pancakes very much.

Wasn't expecting a lot from this old lodge but I'd have to say it was the worst performing shower I've ever encountered while traveling. So bad it was funny 😂 The cafeteria there is top notch food and service 👍👍 All in all a great night's stay.

Beautiful locations in the cottonwood trees. The room was cozy and spacious and the beds were very comfortable. I would definitely come back again and and spend more time on the Navajo Nation. Everyone was very welcoming and kind.

I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Chinle that I know. Rooms clean, office friendly. Cafeteria on site exists....but not where I would choose to eat and super expensive breakfast that we initially mistook was included. We brought food and we're really really glad. Awesome location.
