Grand Island in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Grand Island, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Grand Island offers a look at Nebraska’s prairie heritage at the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, with historic buildings and exhibits on frontier life. Each spring, the nearby Platte River region becomes one of the world’s best-known viewing areas for the sandhill crane migration. The city also hosts the Nebraska State Fair, bringing agricultural exhibits, concerts, and family attractions to the fairgrounds. A walkable downtown with local shops, public art, and eateries adds an easygoing small-city stop along I-80.
With favorites like Fonner Park, Tommy's Family Restaurant, and Texas T-Bone Steakhouse, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Pizza Hut and Jaz's Tacos so you can get the best taste of Grand Island while you’re here. Nestled in the heart of Grand Island, Tommy's Family Restaurant is a delightful throwback to classic diners that have stood the test of time. This family-owned establishment has been a beloved fixture for over 30 years, offering an extensive menu that features mouthwatering fried chicken, juicy steaks, and all-day breakfast favorites. The inviting retro ambiance makes it a perfect spot for families and friends alike.
Greeted with smile, sat at a booth immediately. Waitress came over right away after we were seated and was friendly. Restaurant was clean. Coffee was hot, fresh and delicious. Food was delicious and service was amazing! I ordered a BELT and the eggs were cooked perfectly over easy, bacon crispy and fresh! Hubby had the eggs and beef patties with pancakes and he ate every bite and was happy!

My family and I stopped in yesterday for a very late dinner on our way back to Kansas from South Dakota and we had an incredible experience. Unfortunately I didn't catch our servers name, however he was quick and yet very patient and made great substitute ideas for my meal. I went with a sirloin and eggs meal(I think a number 9) and added 2 eggs in place of the hash browns. The steak was delicious and the eggs were cooked perfectly. My wife's salad was huge and looked very fresh. The kids got chicken baskets off the kids menu and they both enjoyed every last bite of their plates. The atmosphere was very relaxed and comfortable. All in all will absolutely stop back in next time we are in the area!

Amazing and delicious breakfast. They add cool whip to the cappuccinos. Serving sizes are huge here. Very old school, a hometown charm.. waitresses were pleasant. Pay at the front register, not at the table.. would love to come back here next time in the city. They support local businesses! SuperSuper recommended.

Amazing breakfast. Loved the diner atmosphere and the prices were very reasonable. We would definitely recommend the stop.

Charming Midwest diner, loved the small town vibe and dining with the locals. We were coming off the highway and didn't realize how far from the highway it was but well-worth it. Nice selection of pies, wholesome atmosphere and service.

Came for dessert; left with a smile. Ordered a slice of sour cream raisin pie and a slive of peanut butter chocolate pie. Both were rich and delicious. Servers were so friendly and prompt.

Great place. Classic diner appearance and fare. Staff were friendly and fast. Food was great, no complaints at all. Atmosphere was quiet and comfortable and clean. Overall excellent experience and would recommend if you're hankerin' for some pancakes.

Wife and I decided to eat at a diner instead of the big chain restaurants so we chose Tommy’s. On the inside the restaurant is decorated in the theme that belongs to a true diner. Staff extremely friendly and very polite and very funny to boot. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak while the wife had the Ruben sandwich both with fries and are really good. Decided to try out their pies wife had the Lemon while I had the Coconut cream pie, both of which we highly recommend. We will eat here again.

Steak house
Texas T-Bone Steakhouse is a local chain that offers a Western-themed dining experience with a variety of classic dishes such as steak, seafood, and BBQ. The restaurant prides itself on serving high-quality food at great value, making it an ideal spot for families looking for an upbeat and casual dining experience. Guests can enjoy snacking on peanuts from a pail before indulging in meaty delights like barbecued ribs and porterhouse steaks.
Wife and I stopped in for supper several nights ago and we were not disappointed by the atmosphere, service or the quality of the food. Wife had the grilled BBQ Chicken while I had the Pulled Pork sandwich and we both had their beans with beef (outstanding) choice. Waiter was on point making sure all our needs were met. Great place Highly recommend you stop here at least once, we will be going back.
Larry J — Google review
We were staying in town on our drive across country. After searching for somewhere to eat, we can across this place. The steak options (and price) drew us in instantly. Pulling up to this place in a strip mall/ shopping center was unexpected, but it was still soaking and inviting. Inside was VERY ROOMY, with great southern decor. Very nice setup with many seating options and the ability to serve large parties. We lived the make-your-own salad option, and were not exorcist the ahead to be SO BIG!! I ordered the rib and sausage combo with slaw and my wife ordered the 15oz sirloin with baked potato. We know a 15oz steak is big, but when this behemoth came to the table...!!! Everything was DELICIOUS and was hard to stop eating, but there was no way we could eat it all. We had to take home a good portion - which became lunch the next day. The value of this phenomenal food at such reasonable prices is amazing.
James G — Google review
The food is good. The service is great. My chicken was well grilled. The side veggies were tasty if not a bit over boiled. The fries were good. The fried pickle spears were excellent. This place gets the job done, as you might expect. And like their sign our front says, there’s plenty of seating.
Tom G — Google review
A nice place to gether with family and friends and celebrate delicious steak. I ordered ribeye steak with bake potatoe and caesar salad. The food was cooked to perfection. The servers are fast and yet polite. Highly recomended!!
Griffin L — Google review
My Husband and I decided to stop here on our way back to Lincoln from a road trip, we assumed based on all the good reviews we would have a good dining experience and excellent steak. My Husband ordered a medium 8oz steak. His steak was barely medium rare, not well seasoned, very fatty, and so chewy, he was only able to eat about half of it. The rest was too chewy. I made the mistake of ordering the chicken fried steak. It was awful! It was not seasoned, extremely fatty, dry, and chewy. It looked like a slab of fat and hamburger smashed together under soggy breading with lots of brown gravy (the only seasoning) to cover it up. The only good thing about our visit, was the rolls and our waiter was very polite and professional. We decided not to complain and make his job harder. We ate only about half our food and left. We will not make the mistake of coming back here again. It was a complete waste of $52.
Emma H — Google review
Awesome food and service. The build your own salad was amazing!
Kevin B — Google review
A group of us (five adults and two kids) went out to eat, and overall the experience was pretty good. The food itself was tasty, and the restaurant and restrooms were very clean. The only issues we had were with the service. It seemed like our waitress may have had too many tables at once or was possibly new. Three out of the five salads we ordered weren’t correct, and we had to ask multiple times for refills and sauces. She also brought out the wrong sauce twice before finally getting it right. We did find two small hairs—one in our ranch and one on the plate with the poppers. When we mentioned it, she just apologized and walked away. It felt like she could have used an extra hand or should ask for help when needed. Overall, I’d give the experience a 4/5 because the food and cleanliness were great, but the service definitely needs some improvement.
Ashley G — Google review
We went out to eat yesterday with our family for lunch. We were ignored pretty much the whole time and when we finally ordered our food came out and my child's food was never put into their system. So by the time we got done eating then his food came out. We were not upset and was understanding because server had to leave right away and switch with a different one. I put no tip in the tip line because everyone else left big tips, and like I said my child didn't even get to eat. And this morning I wake up to a $10 tip charge on my bank account. Does every server steal money from people and write it in themselves? I'm very upset. And will never eat here again.

Water & Amusement Parks
Park
Island Oasis Water Park is a popular destination for families seeking wet and wild fun. Spanning over six acres, the park offers a variety of attractions including a massive wave pool, high-speed slides reaching over 100 feet in length, and a relaxing lazy river spanning 750 feet. Younger visitors can enjoy the zero-depth kiddie pool with wacky slides and fountains. The park also features amenities such as sand volleyball, a playground, and concessions.
Great water park!! My kids loved it! The wave pool was a unique feature they hadn't done before. The lazy river had a lot of splash features -- so don't expect to ride it without getting your head wet.
Maire S — Google review
It was SO much fun! The slides were great, the wave pool was great, and the lazy river was fantastic! The lazy river had different ways to go so you can either get hit by water or not. The only part that wasn't great was the big slides, they were so high up that the stairs took quite some time and you got super tired. Other than that it was so much fun!
Abigail B — Google review
One of the best water parks I have ever been to. We drove 2 hours to come here and were super impressed! We visited on a Thursday and came from open to close and it wasn’t very busy. No more than a 5 minute wait for slides. #1 lazy river I’ve ever swam in. Food prices were super cheap compared to water parks in Omaha. $2.50 hot dogs, $3 walking tacos. $15 t-shirts! They have the coolest kiddie slide ever it’s like a slip and slide and super cushiony at the bottom which is a big deal to me. I can’t stand coming down a slide or my kids going down a slide and then scraping feet. The life guard at the slide was friendly and would give kids a boost which I thought was nice. All the staff were actually really helpful and friendly. They seemed to actually enjoy their jobs. The park has 2 giant slides, 4 big slides, a wave pool, an obstacle course, lazy river, water basket ball hoops, splash park type area, kiddie slide, sand play area and concessions. $30 for my family of 5 to get in. Very nicely up kept. We will be back and bringing friends! Oh and the decor really gave it a tropical feel. I loved all the pretty flowers and the fake palm trees. 10/10
Tara J — Google review
Tuesday was the perfect day to go. Not too busy with plenty of shady trees to set up under. They had a life vest for my 5-year-old to use, and locker rental was only a buck. Lifeguards were polite, respectful, and diligent. They had big tube slides for kids who aren't strong swimmers and other slides for kids who are. The lazy river and wave pools were a blast. Bring your sun screen and have fun!
Kamilla R — Google review
Venue offers something for the whole family, non-swimmers included. Staff was relaxed. Everything seemed well-maintained and in good working order despite the park’s advancing age. Slides could have used a bit more water to assist riders and the lazy river was perhaps a little too lazy. Admission and concessions were very affordable and tubes were included—making for a joyous and cost effective afternoon for the family.
Wayne M — Google review
Absolutely amazing. I have a 10yr old a 2.5yr old and an 18 month old and they all had a blast a dso did us adults. A lot of fun and great staff at a very good price A+

Had a blast. About the only thing to do in Nebraska to enjoy a family outing. Worth the money. Blow a few hours. Cool off and look at the corn fed bikinis. Not to mention the concession menu has a wide variety of food.
Ryan P — Google review
Fun water park with a multitude of experiences for all ages. Zero depth pool with waves, 6 slides, obstacle course, lazy river, shaded picnic areas, sand and a children's area. An abundance of life guards, snack bar with shaded area, free inner tubes for wave pool.

We had the crispy ravioli ravioli for a starter. They were very cheesy and the marinara sauce was great. We each had one of there 7 inch pizzas. The BBQ pizza was great and the pepperoni on the supreme pizza was huge. The service very good and the food was great. We would come back again!

Decent food and drink! Really a tastefully decorated establishment with a nice atmosphere. The dinner menu consists of the usual hamburgers, fish, and home made pizza. Craft beer on tap and domestic beers on hand along with hand crafted and aged drinks. There is a wide selection of wines including a wine bar where you can sample a multitude of different varieties. Prices are reasonable.

Every year in my hometown, the state fair takes place at Fonner Park, which is the most thrilling event marked on everyone's calendar. The atmosphere is electrifying as individuals from all corners of Nebraska convene here for amusement and enjoyment. This fair is a vibrant explosion of colors and sounds, with numerous food vendors setting up stalls offering a wide array of delectable delicacies.
Went to hairball and had such amazing time. Security was great with making sure everyone was safe as well.

My whole family had a great time here for the horse racing. You can't beat the $1 hot dogs and popcorn, plus free admission! We were a little disappointed to find out the dog races had been canceled and I wish the signage was better for bathrooms and/or there were more that were easily accessible. We had to walk most of the way around the building on the main level to find the bathrooms just for them to be closed for cleaning, so we headed up to the 2nd level and had to walk back around to the opposite end of the building, which is a long ways for a 4 year old needing to go.

Ordered 2 Backyard barbecue pizza. When they arrived they were so saturated with barbecue sauce that the pizzas were inedible. Called and had them reordered, when the new ones arrived they were the same damn way. Will not be ordering pizza hut again, service has been too spotty and not worth it. Update: Thought I would give them another try, but pizza hut must love to disappoint. Order cinnabon mini rolls and they didnt even frost them. Thanks for wasting my time again.

Shout out to the crew on S Locust. Thank you for helping me win the bet. Reviewer's: i bet I could get a pizza delivered in a random location before the guys got the food on the grill. Jaz's Tacos, located in Grand Island, is a popular spot known for its delectable burritos and tacos. The monster burrito has gained quite a reputation for its impressive size and incredible flavor, leaving diners thoroughly satisfied. Customers particularly rave about the carna asada burrito, claiming it to be the best in town without needing any extra sauce. Visitors have been amazed by the generous portions of the food, with some even struggling to finish their meals.
This was my first time here. What amazing food. But I HAD to post a picture of this absolute monster of a burrito. I used a regular coca cola can for comparison. This thing is insane. And sooooooooo good. I couldn’t finish it. This is my new favorite spot! I highly recommend it.

I got mexican corn (elotes) that was corn mayo and cheese with tajin and Valentino hot sauce 😋 it was good but I felt overly pricey any other mexican taco truck I've been to those were $15 or less but my things were $20(+) the mayo was too sweet and the corn wasnt in pieces and so many other things but they were very decent everything was lazily thrown together

Always a great place fast friendly service. Be prepared to stand in line a little while. Excellent food and drinks. There is some tables and chairs but not many. Best if you take it home or to a park.

If you need a reason to call into work the next day....order the BIG burrito from here. I ordered the carna asada and it put me in a food coma, thought I was going to conquer this burrito but it took me down. This monster had lots of flavor you didn't have to add any sauce. Lena's should be happy this place isn't located next to them because they would be out of business. I will be back after a good few days of recovery time.

They didn't have everything on the menu👎🏼 but everything we did get to order was great! The decor was super cute... My grandchildren liked it alot!! It was hard to find due to the outside sign being incredibly small👎🏼 The waitress was pleasant!

We were in town from Illinois for a wedding. Had a little down time in between pictures and the actual wedding needed some drinks. We stopped in had a great time and came back an hour later for dinner. Next time I'm in town I will definitely come back
